Why We Broke Up SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

THE NOVEL Why We Broke Up is a young-adult novel, written by Daniel Handler. In it, Min Green, a high school junior, and Ed Slaterton, a senior, have broken up. Through a letter and series of objects, Min recalls their month-and-a-half long relationship.

ANALYSIS Originally published in December 2011, Why We Broke Up was mainly promoted on Tumblr where people were invited to submit their own breakup stories. Apart from this website, promotion was minimal. Why We Broke Up lacks official social media pages and a book trailer, as a video of author Daniel Handler interviewing strangers in Grand Central Station about their own breakups was created instead.

SOCIAL MEDIA PLAN D

While anyone who has experienced a breakup can relate to Why We Broke Up, the novel’s target audience is females between the ages of 16-22. In order to better reach these readers, utilizing social media is the key to success and increased readership. KEY PLATFORMS: Facebook Twitter Vinev Instagram YouTube

HASHTAG In order to encourage cross-platform uniformity, readers will be encouraged to use the hashtag #WeBrokeUpBecause when submitting their own images, videos and stories. Regardless of whether a fan is on Facebook, Twitter, Vine, or Instagram, they will be able to find Why We Broke Up related content by using this specific hashtag.

VIDEO MEDIA One of Why We Broke Up's biggest flaws is its lack of a book trailer. By having these trailers be 30-seconds, they will spread quickly on social media sites. Since the book features objects, there is also an opportunity to create short, spoiler-free object spotlights.
