aptd this bachelor’s of architecture undergraduate thesis “A Place To Dream” proposes a site sensitive, phenomenological approach for an orphanage in espanola, n.m. it serves as an antithesis of orphanage as institution. designed for housing based upon the family unit, each shelter serves six children and one staff member. the number 12 is rooted in celestial meanings and measures in human scale, therefore, the shelters are arranged in 12’ x 12’ modular grids.

pmrf pilsen is an ecclectic neighborhood of chicago with a colorful history. today it is a mostly mexican community, rich with culture, vibrant street art, and shaken by gentrification from the east side arts district. it houses one of the largest and underutilized industrial corridors in chicago. our team’s goal was to help revitalize what was once a major factor in pilsen’s economic vitality with a 15 acre site for a material recovery facility. the program was expanded to include an active engagement with the community, focused on improving sustainability education.

The seaside extension adds needed space to the original home while remaining true to its character. Making use of the 30’ height ceiling, the bedroom is lofted to add additional square footage in terms of an office space. The bed is tucked away under the lofted space in consideration of the owner’s proclivity for privacy without forgoing ample light.

seeking order within nature:
the project employed a naturally occuring ordering system based upon forest layers as insight for the assortment of program taking place at the church and education center, this ordering system utilized the filtering of light as a constructive material. It also created a clear hierarchy of space while remaining nuanced in divine and natural undertones.
dcci an essential aspect of health and wellness is food. not only can food be healing, but the art of preparing food can help heal the mind, body, and spirit. fniding meaning within the military context of d.c.’s navy yards, I decided to pair the program of a culinary institute with a specialized focus for the abundant population of veterans returning home from war. often times, veterans come home seeking new opportunities. and new career paths. even more so, there can be complex stresses returning to life post war. in order to aid these veterans in their transition, the culinary school is intended to be a safehaven: a relief from the surroundings and a place of healing, living and educating.

an inversion of its surroundings: the veteran’s culinary program prepares students to master the art of cuisine in a dynamic program of education, housing, and healing. given a site adjacent to the nationals’ stadium where a bustling crowd surrounds a small field, the project proposes an inversion of circumstances where a small group of hardworking individuals is surrounded by an expansive landscape and a river’s edge.
