Introduction
[ PLUS/ MINUS ]
There are a lot of opposite ideas in the world. Nearly everything can be divided into two sides. It all depends on perspective. I’m finding a balance in my life as well as in design. Designers have the ability to convey multiple perspectives. They can link messages to a visual identity. They try to solve problems, but there is no perfect answer. As a graphic designer, I believe everything in this world has its own set of reasons. Only when we use an open mind and think about different perspectives can we get out of rigid constraints. Plus/ Minus represents the adjustments between conflicts the flexibility to see both sides of any situation. In this portfolio, I want to share with you my own experience when I am doing design and how I find balance in every dilemma.

Creating a cohesive visual system of an Alexander Payne Movie festival. [ APPROACH ]
In Alexander Payne’s movies, we can often see abrupt changes made ordinary by people confronting adverse situations in order to survive and evolve. During the journey to seek spiritual sustenance, characters in Payne’s films build up positive relationships, eventually adapting to their losses and acquiring inner peace. I used graphics and images to express adventures and adversities reflecting the themes in Payne’s narratives. [ -/+ ]

This was a significant transition for me. The film festival was one of the most challenging projects at the Academy of Art. I love watching movies but up until this project, I didn’t notice the visual thought and expression that the film makers had used to express these stories. In the project, I found a consistent thread in the movies and saw the visual language the film makers used. I realized there are a lot of hidden signs in our lives. Those things are so subtle but meaningful. This project challenged me and made me more perceptive. In a way, like in the films, part of the process became my lovely blunder. I was just like one of the characters in Payne’s movies—falling down, struggling, tumbling and finding new steps forward in my own life. Through this, I have developed more confidence and passion for design.

Helping Shutterfly to expand its market, and give its solutions a whole new visual identity. [ APPROACH ]
We take and share photos all the time on social media, but there are few moments we really want to keep forever. People need to take some time to enjoy their life, and stories make memories last forever. Therefore, I would like to change Shutterfly to be an organization that provides family activities for everyone who wants to have fun and who enjoys the little moments with family. The new Shutterfly can strengthen family relationships and give parents a chance to educate and learn together with their children. [ -/+ ]

Throughout this project, I have learned so many details about branding. As a design, I aim to encourage people to care about things in nature and people’s surroundings. Technology improves and gives us better lives and that is convenient. However, we have to remind ourselves that tech is just a tool, and think about how we can use it to expand ourselves. I really enjoyed this rebranding project, which gave me an opportunity to share these ideas.

Designing an app to provide a platform for people to discuss, plan and budget their trips with friends. [ APPROACH ]
Planning and saving money for trips is always a challenge for some people. Trippet is an app designed for people who love traveling with friends. Its users can create events, invite friends, set budgets and save money together by pooling their resources. The identity was inspired by squirrels collecting nuts. I hope it can be user-friendly, simple and flexible.

UI/UX design is always interesting to me. It is about focusing on user flow, which is slightly different from graphic design. After I began to learn about app design, I thought about every time I had used an app. I realized that function and accessibility are the most important things. It’s an important pursuit and also a challenge for designers to make an app visually appealing and easy to access. As a designer, now I appreciate not only the functions but the visual design. I’m glad that I had this chance to learn so much useful knowledge of UI/UX design, and I hope Trippet can become a real and useful app.

People like to travel, especially young adults. Therefore, we should make travel become more meaningful. Outside My Window builds a community to bring travel stories and young people together. I was a person who felt out of place in the world. When I was a teenager, I had many thoughts, but they were different from other people. Although I had friends, I felt alone all the time. And then I found philosophy. I met like-minded people and mentors to inspire me in philosophy classes,. I realized I could build up my own world and not simply be affected by other people and things which are not important. I really want to share this experience with everyone who is like me, so I did this project. It’s a conceptual piece that expresses an ideal. After I finished this project, I felt that I could begin to use my design skills to help society.

Designing a black and white poster to portray the meaning of the word encroachment. [ APPROACH ]
The idea for the poster was inspired by a quote, “Information is not knowledge,” by Albert Einstein. When I think of the word encroachment, I immediately think of all of the media going on in this world. A lot of unnecessary data keeps invading our personal space. I used hand-drawn doodles mixed with a plethora of words to indicate the noise of media. I would like to encourage people to think more about what they receive on their screens. [ -/+ ]
Information is not Knowledge was a delightful project. I enjoyed all the doodling and playing with type. There are always a lot of design approaches that I want to experiment with. It’s cool that a designer can fulfill requirements and be reasonable but also show some of his or her own personality. I‘m grateful that the project can express the meaning of Einstein’s thought as well as show in some way my own perspective.

Book
Smell, Sight & Memory is an undertaking of extensive research, writing, image gathering and design. The main source of research material is from my own environment and habitat. I chose smell to be my main topic. Most of the time we smell unconsciously, so I decided to use my nose combined with graphic design to record everything I met in a day. I used watercolors to indicate the feeling of different smells throughout the project. Besides my own writing, I added some poetry to make the book more interesting. [ -/+ ]

It seems hard for a beginner to break the rules. When we are learning graphic design, we are taught many design rules. In the experiment class, it was the opposite, we were told that we should try to break the rules. Although, only when we fully understand the rules and master certain skills can we break them easily. At the time I worked on this book, I completely appreciated the freedom from restrictions that experimental typography not only allowed, but demanded.

Redesigning a book—Thus Spoke Zarathustra by the German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche [ APPROACH ]
Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None is a book written during the 1880s by Friedrich Nietzsche. Consisting largely of speeches by the book’s hero, prophet Zarathustra, the work’s content extends across a mass of styles and subject matter. Throughout the whole book I used black and white hand-drawn illustrations to express the story. I expressed the definitive proclamations in Nietzsche’s book using bold type and graphics. There are a lot of metaphors in the story to inspire people to think more about humans in a transition from animals to what Nietzsche calls overmen.

It’s interesting because this project is more about illustration than typography. At the beginning of this portfolio, I mentioned that there are a lot of opposites things in the world, it’s not so black and white. I always think philosophy is very definitive. It’s about what you really believe in. When talking about logic, there is not too much middle ground. I believe when we have a clear mind to identify right and wrong, yes and no, then we can live well in this complicated world. I appreciate that I had a chance to redesign this book and interpret Nietzsche’s thoughts. The work took me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to discover an expand area of graphic design.

I chose three of my favorite philosophical novels—Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre, The Stranger by Albert Camus and Too Loud a Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal. All these are existentialist novels, so I used simple illustrations as a way to enter the complex ideas. The imagery indicated the idea of sensory perception, and what it means to be awake in the world. Since I am so into these books, I want people to see how they are inspiring and compelling. [ -/+ ]
This was an early project that I feel close to. Type Composition was in one of the courses that built a foundation for me as a designer. I learned a lot from this work and was satisfied with the outcome of this playful project.

Create a cruelty-free lifestyle brand for men to decrease the amount of buying of animal-tested products in the world. [ APPROACH ]
Over 80% of the world still allows animal testing for cosmetics. For over fifty years, animals have been used in tests in an attempt to measure the safety of some chemicals found in cosmetics and household products. Many animals are still subjected to cruel and painful tests across the world to bring a new product to the market. After two years of research, I created Spruce. Spruce is a brand that dedicated to helping men to be cool, not cruel. It is a bold, simple and stylish, cruelty-free brand that provides transparency information, service and products to encourage guys to have a cruelty-free lifestyle.

My MFA thesis represents a great deal of concentrated work. It’s about what I want to do, and also what the world needs. I started with an interesting topic—animals and cosmetics. Eventually, I decided to target men as the primary audience, which is another challenging aspect. At the Academy of Art, instructors push us to connect to the real world to get in touch with our audience. Because of this project, I put myself in a man’s position to imagine what they like and what they need, which is also very interesting to me. I also learned professional discipline during the process of this project. I sometimes felt the enormous weight of the thesis because the thesis is such a big project in our MFA lives. Even so, through this pressure I developed skills and abilities to take on large projects. Looking back at it, this was one of the milestones and the most important work in my design life up till now. I cannot help but keep learning and growing after this.
