THIS MONTH’S COVER ARTWORK

With such a diverse choice of landscapes to paint…

…we’re lucky that painting them – and using di erent mediums and tools to do so – can result in wildly di erent outcomes. Take just three stories in this issue of Artists & Illustrators. Cover artist Michelle Condrat paints bright images of the desert, Southwest of the United States. Her stunning work has been called linear, Cubist, pixelated, and even digital but are, in fact, entirely executed in oil. Then we have Simon Palmer, this month’s Big Interview artist. His watercolour paintings of North Yorkshire (his self-proclaimed spiritual home) use a limited colour palette and are often emphasised or exaggerated, creating his very unique and individual style. Then there’s San Francisco based palette knife painter Lisa Elley, whose impasto technique sees her apply her paint lusciously to the canvas, creating a Californian seascape that’s entirely distinctive in its approach.

But it’s not just landscapes that we’ve got covered. Award-winning artist Anna Rose Bain tells you why painting motherhood is so special to her, whilst David Barber and Ollie Tuck show you how they painted two very di erent still lifes. If you’re after something a bit livelier, Marilyn Allis details how she created an energetic painting from a 20-year-old photograph of Trafalgar Square, proof you don’t need to constantly source new material to carry on creating.

We’re also thrilled to report that the National Portrait Gallery will be re-opening its doors next month; we take a deep dive into its history as well as looking at the events coming up this year that have us excited. Then we take a look at a new exhibition celebrating one of the most immortalised men in history. You guessed it: St. Francis of Assisi.

Get stuck in and inspired to nd out how to take your painting to new levels!

Things we love...

Drawing inspiration from the New Figuration movement, French artist Marie-Elisabeth Merlin (b.1968) has rigorously stuck to figurative painting for the past 30 years, working in opposition to the fashionable conceptual tastes of her formative years as an artist. Her debut London solo show, Mondes Hypothétiques is a collection of 12 new paintings and explores human and animal migration and the power of nature. On from 31 May to 4 June 2023 at 4 Cromwell Place, London SW7 2JE. tinmanart.com
