S

port has always been one of my favourite hobbies and most of my sporting experience stems from my school days – endless weekends spent freezing on lacrosse pitches around the country, ear-splitting swimming galas and idyllic summer afternoons spent playing cricket and tennis. However, these days I seem to be rather out of practice. Apart from the odd swimming session or yoga class, I mainly keep fit by running after my children, shouting like a maniac, or participating in the egg and spoon mothers’ race at sports day – the less said about that the better!

With the excitement of the Rio Olympics upon us, we’re celebrating sport in this issue.

We’ve rounded up our favourite fashion looks, as well as accessories, games and toys with a sporty twist (p.23). Leonora Bamford and the super-inventive Nanny Anita have some brilliant craft ideas for Olympic-mad children this summer (p.46) and party expert Carole Middleton shares her tips for sports-themed parties (p.70).

Talking of parties, never has there been a better time to be in the business of organising one! There are some seriously good party planners to choose from these days and we’ve 5

done all the detective work for you (p.64).

Be inspired to think big, or at least outside the box, safe in the knowledge that you’ll be guided by the best!

We’ve also been busy in the kitchen with super-dad and chef extraordinaire Jamie Oliver (p.30) at his brand new family-focused cookery school in London. We take a closer look at the fat phenomenon (p.79) and have plenty of recipes for you, to add some heat (p.35) or cool you down (p.76).

For those gearing up for a new academic year at a new school we have some great tips on how to help your little one settle in (p.90) as well as an edit of the best sports-themed books for children to read this summer (p.28).

Addressing themes of teamwork, fair play and honesty, both on the page and the pitch, can only be of benefit to little ones. Now, if only there was a magic spell to teach them how to be good losers as well as sensitive winners!

Richard Scarry is a childhood favourite of mine, his books are filled with beautiful illustrations of delightfully anthropomorphic animals you could spend hours looking at.

They are also full of wonderful life lessons and social values which I feel are important.

I love the melting pot of history, cultures, music, fashion and eccentricity. I was born and raised here and am a proud Londoner.

Their hilarious honesty, I think us grown-ups tend to over-complicate things.

Your favourite summer trend?

It has to be the tropical trend. The palm prints, bright colours and animal motifs are the perfect way to get in the mood of the season, even if we have a wet British summer!

CHE RRY HEALEY WE CATCH UP WITH THE TV PRESENTER, AUTHOR AND MOTHER-OF-TWO TO TALK ABOUT HER NEW BOOK AND FAMILY LIFE IN THE CAPITAL Cherry’s witty anecdotes will have you laughing the whole way through

receive some really good advice, though – on the days that you can’t write, write anyway.

It’s a bit like being an athlete, you need to build up your muscle and you need to build up your capacity for concentration. And of course, sometimes you end up writing something quite good!

Where do you live in London?

We live in Shepherd’s Bush. It’s so quick to get into town, and I love that’s there’s so many parks. It’s got a little bit of everything.

Describe a typical weekend for you.

My children and I like to have lazy mornings watching back-to-back SpongeBob in our pyjamas, followed by croissants or pancakes.

We try to be more active in the afternoon; my daughter [Coco, six] will go riding or we’ll hang out with another family. I don’t wear any make-up, I pretty much only wear dungarees, and there’s not too much planning involved.

I’ve had to become a lot more organised. If I’m away working, I’ll try to make sure I’m on top of what’s going on; I don’t always get it right but I do try.

What do you like to get up to in the summer time?

And what’s the best thing about being a mother?

We go to tons of parks! We’ll do lots of outdoor activities; I’ve got a bicycle – my son, Bear [aged two], sits in a seat in the back – and Coco’s got her own. We live near tennis courts, too, so I’ll often play in the mornings.

Cuddles, bath and bedtime – it’s just lovely.

Where do you go if you want to escape the city?

How has motherhood changed you?

I have to say, it’s very rare that I want to escape. I feel like London is one of those places that can accommodate anyone – if you want to get lost, you can go to Richmond; if you want the hustle and bustle, head to Soho; if you want trendy and interesting – Shoreditch. But if I did want to get away it would definitely be by the sea.

What about if you’ve got some time off from the kids?

I’ll do a yoga class or a dance session – I love exercise! In the evening I might meet up with friends over prosecco at Ceviche and then find somewhere to dance the night away.

Where do you shop for your little ones?

At the moment it’s pretty much just Little Bird by Jools at Mothercare for Bear. My daughter is now at the age where she likes to pick her own clothes, so there’s lots of pink shorts and little black boots. It’s fun watching her style evolve.

Tell us a bit about your new memoir, Letters to my Fanny.

I’m so excited that it’s finally here! It’s taken about two-and-a-half years to write. It’s about trying to decipher what it’s really like to be a woman – not what’s expected, but what it’s actually like. I’ve always wanted to write a book, and keeping diaries over the years helped me to write truthfully.

Did you find the writing process easy?

Some days it would pour out of me like water, other days it was like pulling teeth. I did 19

Do you hope that current attitudes will eventually change?

Obviously there’s a responsibility from the media to portray more real women. I remember growing up looking at pictures of only very skinny models and wondering what was wrong with me. It had a huge impact.

We only live this one life, so trying to achieve something that doesn’t exist is a waste of time. If my book can help another woman break that illusion, I’d be really happy.

How do you juggle your work with motherhood?

We have a wonderful au pair, and my amazing mum often steps in. It’s a big job carrying two people through life, so I’m doing it with as much love, care and attention as possible.

What’s the best thing about your job?

How unpredictable it is. We got a tour recently around the Tata Steel factory, which was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. So, it’s long hours, but I get to have the most incredible experiences.

Is there anything else in the pipeline?

I’m about to start filming a show for BBC1 with Tom Kerridge – very exciting! L Letters to my Fanny by Cherry Healey (£7.99, Penguin Books) is out now.

t least I haven’t come home to find Jools chewing on a hot water bottle or dipping bananas in milk this time round. She’s just been craving salty snacks instead. Oh, and she had gone off coffee, but is getting back on the cappuccinos now.”

It may come as a surprise that a man who has his diary planned 18 months in advance, is worth an estimated £160 million and dedicates his time to saving the world from poor nutrition still has the time and the energy to be passionate about family life. But this is Jamie Oliver we’re talking about. In the flesh, he’s even more enigmatic than he is on screen and even though he jokes about the impending arrival of his fifth child (“don’t talk to me about parenthood, I think I need to be a bit more restrained!”), he’s clearly very, very excited.

“Mealtimes are colourful in our house, we have a big family that’s about to get even bigger and there are often tears and tantrums, but we do try to cook and

they’ve grown themselves,” he explains, “that’s why it’s so important we instil these skills and teach them where things comes from.”

When asked whether he has a house full of budding chefs, Jamie’s quick to point out that he doesn’t “ram cooking and healthy eating down their throats”. But he’s also aware that his passion does rub off on them.

“Take Buddy into our garden and he could name about 30 herbs,” he says, quickly adding that he’s not been “formally teaching him”, instead he’s been “talking to him about them, letting him smell and taste them... as that’s how kids learn.”

Of course, Jamie has his parents to thank for introducing him to food and so not surprisingly, in his eyes, “mum and dad are the number one most important people to teach you to cook.” He realises though, that not everyone’s as fortunate as him and that these days many parents struggle with basic skills.

That’s where his latest venture, The Jamie Oliver Cookery School, comes in. Based at Jamie’s Italian in Westfield Shopping Centre, Shepherd’s Bush, its aim is “to make learning accessible and affordable. For us, as a company, getting kids involved is the holy grail,” says Jamie. And it’s clear the set-up has been designed with the younger generation in mind.

The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, the team of chefs, handpicked by Jamie, ooze the same energy and charisma as himself and the 10 lessons seven to 14 year olds can choose from have certainly been created by someone who knows exactly what kids want. Bread, pasta, Moroccan meatballs and sushi are amongst the most popular.

Mealtimes are colourful in our house, we have a big family that’s about to get even bigger eat together.” He laughs when he talks about making pizzas from scratch with five-year-old Buddy and seven-year-old Petal. “Buddy always decides he needs a wee when we’re cooking and it’s all a bit imperfect with kids, but that doesn’t matter.” For Jamie, it’s far more important that children get to “touch, smell and taste the food” and “really use their hands”.

“My kids love, love, love this,” says Jamie, admitting he does hold back a little on the chilli at home. “I remember eating this for the first time aged 15,” he reminisces, “it blew my mind. The flavours, the intensity.

My tastebuds went ‘wow’.” But for Jamie, this dish represents more than just a good meal, it’s a personal crusade. “Takeaway is for adults what the school dinner issue was for kids,” he explains, “the biggest public enemy when it comes to food.” Twenty years on, it’s clear he’s still passionate about tackling our takeaway culture, which is part of the reason he’s decided to teach me how to cook a “really simple, healthy curry that’s perfect for the whole family” today.

“You can do this in about 15 minutes. Get all your ingredients ready and let the rice be your timekeeper,” he advises, pulling out his trusty pestle and mortar. “Smash it, bash it, LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

taste it, finger it” he almost chants, referring to the coriander, onion, ginger and kaffir lime leaves he’s just “chucked in”. Jamie, of course, makes it all look simple, but I have to admit, it wasn’t too taxing for a self-acclaimed culinary disaster-master like myself. Not sure the results would be quite as good at home with a two-year-old clinging to my legs, though. But Jamie’s advice is to “just give it a go – anyone can cook.”

But does that ‘anyone’ extend to me?

Well, I can’t repeat what he said about the presentation of my dish, but while he’s making it look somewhere near palatable I take the opportunity to ask him about his latest victory in the battle with obesity – the Chancellor’s recent announcement, thanks in part to Jamie’s campaigning, that he’s to impose a tax on sugary drinks. Clearly, Jamie has already moved on: “The sugar tax took me by surprise, but the thing I’m focused on 33

right now, and this is the biggest challenge, is the Childhood Obesity Strategy. Cameron is tackling it personally, it’s his legacy and I’m confident he’ll do it well.” Going back to the sugar tax, he adds, “Soda – I get upset when I see how prolific it is. You have whole families hydrating on it and that breaks my heart.”

As he scoops my curry, which is now sprinkled with a touch of Jamie magic for my “whole family to enjoy”, it’s clear to see why his legacy of campaigning has been such a success. His down-to-earth nature, boundless energy and enthusiasm rub off on those around him, making him quite a force to be reckoned with. L

FRAGRANT THAI GREEN CURRY Classic, aromatic and creamy – make your own Thai green curry paste then turn it into a fragrant chicken curry with perfect fluffy rice and a refreshing coconut and tomato relish.

THAI GREEN CURRY (SERVES 8)

• 4 x 200g free-range skinless chicken breasts • 2 x 400ml tins light coconut milk • 75g pistachio nuts • 6 spring onions • 4-6 fresh green chillies • 2 garlic cloves • 2cm piece of ginger • 10g lime leaves • 2 sticks of lemongrass • 1 tbsp coriander seeds • 1 tsp low-salt soy sauce • 3 drops of fish sauce • ½ bunch fresh basil • ½ bunch fresh coriander • 3-4 limes • extra virgin olive oil • olive oil Method To make the paste, chop the spring onions, deseed and finely chop the chillies, peel and finely chop the garlic and ginger, tear up the lime leaves, squash the lemongrass, remove the outer layer and finely chop. Put it all in a pestle and mortar or food processor with the coriander seeds, soy and fish sauces, fresh herbs, 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Mash or whizz to a smooth paste. Grate in the zest from the limes to taste.

Slice the chicken into 2cm pieces and marinate in a little of the paste for 30 minutes. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a pan or wok and add the chicken. Fry for 4 minutes, then add the remainder of the paste, it will sizzle and spit! Stir in the coconut milk, bring to the boil and simmer gently for 8 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked. Season to taste with sea salt and black pepper. It should have a kick but be reasonably mellow.

Serve with rice and top with chopped pistachios. Delicious sprinkled with poppadoms for added crunch, toasted coconut flakes and fresh coriander.

Jamie’s easy-peasy green curry is perfect for the whole family

CHUNKY COCONUT, TOMATO, CUCUMBER & LIME RELISH • 16 ripe cherry tomatoes • 1 fresh red chilli (optional) • ½ fresh coconut • ½ bunch fresh basil • ½ cucumber • extra virgin olive oil • 1-2 limes Method Roughly chop the tomatoes and chilli, grate the coconut and chop the basil leaves. Peel and halve the cucumber, remove the seeds then chop into thin slices. Add to a bowl and toss together.

Just before serving, add 1 tablespoon of oil and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Squeeze in the lime juice to taste.

PERFECT FLUFFY RICE • 350g basmati rice Method Put a large pan of salted water on a high heat and bring to the boil. Rinse the rice in a colander under running water for 1 minute, or until the water runs clear. Add your rice to the boiling

water and wait for the grains to start dancing around. From that point, boil for 5 minutes. Drain. Pour water back into the pan to the depth of 2.5cm, put it on the heat and bring to the boil, then turn down to a simmer. Cover the rice in the colander with foil and place on top of the pan of simmering water to let the rice steam for 8 to 10 minutes, or until fluffy. Remove from the heat and if you’re ready, serve immediately. If not, leave the foil on and put aside – it should stay warm for about 20 minutes.

YOU COULD ALSO TRY… LEMON & NUTMEG RICE • olive oil • 1 knob unsalted butter • 1 nutmeg, for grating • 1 lemon Method Cook your rice following the method above. Heat some oil in a frying pan on a low heat and add the butter.

Once the butter has melted, grate in a quarter of the nutmeg and squeeze in juice from the lemon. Add the rice and stir until coated. Season to taste.

ummer time! I love spending this long holiday with the children after the school year, throwing routine to the wind and getting up a bit later. We’ve been spending time relaxing at our Cotswolds home for a while. Is being a princess really just about bein pretty and findin your happily ever after?

f you’re the parent of a little girl, there’s a reasonable chance she has a penchant for tiaras and taffeta. Because unless you live in a home-schooling, yurtdwelling exclusion zone, it’s hard to avoid the profusion of frothy, flammable fashion that is relentlessly marketed to young girls.

There has been a vociferous backlash against gender stereotyping in children’s toys and clothing of late – especially when it comes to princesses. Ariel, Belle, Elsa and friends have come under feminist fire for upholding sexist notions of beauty, while insidiously undermining the future potential of a LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Of course, dressing-up and make-believe are both vital parts of early development.

Few parents would want to squash such a magical part of childhood. Perhaps the important thing is to make sure that girls – and boys – know they can also dress up as scientists and superheroes if they want to.

Because out of millions of little girls, only one will ever become wife to Prince George – and that’s assuming he gets married at all.

Perhaps then, we should be encouraging our daughters to strive for goals that might just be more achievable.

And no wonder. Disney princesses are unfailingly depicted as button-nosed, lustrous-haired beauties with eyes bigger than their waists. We have yet to see a size 12 princess with glasses and a problem T-zone who is admired for her achievements rather that her looks, grace our screens.

But now, it seems, there’s a backlash against the backlash. A new book entitled, In Defense Of The Princess: How Plastic Tiaras and Fairytale Dreams Can Inspire Strong, Smart Women asserts that princesses can be feminists, too. Its author, Jerramy Fine, is a self-proclaimed would-be princess, who even moved from the US to Britain in search of her very own prince. Sadly, that didn’t work out.

But Jerramy believes it’s time to stand up for her fairytale icons.

“I am grateful to feminists of the past, but somewhere along the way we began to belittle all things feminine in the name of feminism,” she says. “And that’s what I take issue with.

The princess genre is just one of many ‘feminine’ things that is constantly belittled.’’

The trouble is, the notion of being a princess is about two things: looking pretty and finding a prince. It doesn’t really get more complex than that, unlike feminism which is as multifarious as women themselves.

NIEMIERKO KIDS When his former brides began asking if he would plan the birthdays of their little ones, children’s parties became a natural progression for wedding planner Mark Niemierko. “It was my 11-year-old niece, Ruby Grace, who came up with the idea for Niemierko Kids,” reveals Mark. And now she, along with her siblings, are creative consultants on the company’s ideas.

For Mark, it’s all about getting to know the little ones, and that includes a consultation over milkshakes to find out their likes and dislikes.

“Yes, we want to meet the adults’ expectations, but I also like to ask the children what they enjoy, so we can come up with the right theme.”

And when it comes to themes, Niemierko doesn’t hold back. Previous dos include butlers dressed as iconic London guards serving drinks from silver trays, and back gardens transformed into enchanted woodlands or Old MacDonald’s farm. “And we always have hosts,” adds Mark. “Someone to welcome the children and encourage those that are a little shy to join in.”

NUTTY’S CHILDREN’S PARTIES This year marks the 10th anniversary of Nutty’s Children’s Parties, set up by actor, DJ and father-of-two Danny Nutt.

The West Norwood-based planner offers four types of parties for little ones aged three to 11, including adventure parties (think themed characters, storytelling and treasure hunts), drama workshops, football parties for budding Beckhams, and classic discos with plenty of games and air guitar.

M

y father and I aren’t big into telephone chitchat. We may go several weeks without a catch up, but when I do call his opening words on the phone are normally, “Hello my boy, shall I get your mother?” I don’t think it is a lack of love, it’s just old school. And yet, yesterday we nattered on the blower for half an hour about how good it was to see England beat Australia.

When Nelson Mandela said, “Sport has the power to change the world” I think he had bigger dreams than dialling my old man. But sport does generate amazing emotions and bonds, and I can’t wait for my kids and I to scream in celebration about a wicket, goal or try that genuinely means something to us.

However, if bats and balls spark conversations with Dad, they extinguish them with my wife. Several years ago I met Muhammad Ali, I can still remember her looking up from her magazine and greeting my excitement with, “That’s nice.” Last weekend she sat next to a famous current England cricketer during lunch at Queen’s and is still totally oblivious to his national heroics. This month I’m off to interview

Twickenham; the family needed to go to their first sporting event.

On arrival, we loaded up on burgers and sat in the stand. And within minutes the children were totally absorbed. Who knew fold-down seats could be so much fun? Relentlessly they flapped them and laughed, and flapped them some more. But unlike a Mexican wave, it didn’t ignite the other spectators and the tuts and groans meant we left soon after we arrived.

So I took them for a tour of the television trucks.

A live broadcast in full flow is quite impressive by anyone’s standards, and even my wife raised her eyebrows to indicate faint interest. The three of them were silently transfixed at the back and for a moment I thought I was winning the battle, but then my daughter started asking everyone what they did, and my son couldn’t resist pressing buttons and so once again, we left. And within 30 minutes we’d covered off the two things I thought would take all day.

So I managed to borrow some pitch passes, thinking getting closer to the action and the players would be of interest to the children.

Several years ago I met Muhammad Ali; ‘That’s nice,’ she said Dan Carter in Cannes, she is only jealous of the sunshine. She could teach gravity a thing or two; it is hard for your feet to leave the floor in the face of such disinterest. And I love her all the more for it.

My work schedule sits in our diary for months but every weekend she still asks where I’m going and when I’m back. It dawned on me the other day, while waiting in the departure lounge, that if my plane went down she would simply think I had gone on tour until told otherwise.

This sporting ambivalence is in the genes. This week, I’m reliably informed by LinkedIn, was my 13th anniversary at Sky Sports. I’ve broadcast over 15,000 hours of live sport in that time, and worked almost every weekend throughout. So when I overheard my son in the park, hands nonchalantly on his hips, say that his Daddy is “a singer on the television”, I had to kneel down in despair. Enough was enough.

certainly interested by the thighs. And when the kids started shouting and cheering at the action, I really thought we were making progress.

So much so in fact, that moments later my son had wandered off into the middle of the Kenyan team huddle. My stress at his behaviour was only marginally higher than the realisation that 10 yards further and he’d have been on the field of play, taking to the international stage at the age of three.

So like any responsible parent, we left. But as we wandered past the tunnel and headed for the exit, the boy laid down and rolled around on the astroturf, moaning that he was tired. Which prompted a steward to escort us out. Being forced to leave while in the process of leaving just about summed up the day.

Mandela may have believed that sport can change the world, but my guess is that he started a little higher up the ladder from fold-down seats and sculpted legs. L

COOL OFF WITH THESE HEALTHY HOMEMADE ICE LOLLIES DIPPING BONANZA

Kids go crazy for this dessert table at a party. They can all have a go at making their own lolly creation, and then have fun eating it, too!

SERVES: 16 PREP: 25 MINUTES FREEZING: 6 HOURS OR OVERNIGHT Ingredients • 160g strawberries, chopped • 160g pineapple, chopped • 160g raspberries, chopped • 160g cherries, stoned and chopped • 16 tsp natural, unrefined sugar FOR THE DIPS AND SPRINKLES • 100g white chocolate, broken up • 100g milk chocolate, broken up • 100g dark chocolate, broken up • 2 tsp coconut oil • various sprinkles and chopped nuts

Method To make the lollies, whizz each fruit separately with 130ml water and 4 tsp sugar in a blender. Divide each flavour between four moulds, leaving a 1cm gap at the top. Insert the sticks with stick-holders and place in the freezer.

When frozen, de-mould and store until ready to use. Prepare the dipping bowls when you are ready to serve the lollies: put each chocolate into a separate microwavable bowl. Add 1 tsp of coconut oil to each of the milk and dark chocolate bowls (but not the white). Microwave each one for 20 seconds and stir, then microwave again for 10 seconds and stir. Continue until melted, but keep your eye on the chocolate as it can easily burn. Put the sprinkles, nuts and chocolate bowls on the table and let the kids start dipping!

TIP! Also try honeycomb, biscuit crumbles and dried fruit as alternative sprinkles.

These fresh and fun lollies look like octopuses, and make the perfect extra for an under-the-sea themed birthday party.

SERVES: 4 PREP: 10 MINUTES FREEZING: 6 HOURS OR OVERNIGHT Ingredients • 300ml white grape juice • small handful of blueberries • carrot, beetroot or courgette spirals Method Divide the grape juice between the moulds, leaving a 2cm gap at the top. Place a few blueberries into each mould (these are the ‘insides’ of the octopus). Top up each mould with grape juice leaving a 1cm gap. Use a spiraliser to create the octopus legs.

If you don’t have a spiraliser, use a peeler and cut each peel to make thin legs. Place the spirals just inside the moulds and let the rest hang over the outside of the moulds. Insert the sticks with the stick-holders and place

in the freezer. We find the best stickholder device to use for this lolly is foil, instead of clingfilm or card.

TIP! Use whatever fruit or veg you like to make the legs of the octopus – the more colourful the better.

Essential fatty acids play a key role in skin and cell health and can only be obtained through diet

A

fter years of being demonised by both health professionals and the public, the latest nutritional research reveals that fat it is not as harmful as once thought. Fats are found in many nutrient-dense foods and are, in fact, very important for our health.

Essential fatty acids (Omega 3, 6 and 9) are those that can only be obtained through diet, and are key for many processes in the body.

Our brains are comprised of around 60% fat, and hormones are made from cholesterol,

so fat plays a key role in healthy hormone function. We also need fats to support both skin and cell health.

As we know, fat is very tasty and satiating (helping to keep us feeling full) so it is worth being aware that many low-fat foods will contain added sugar or sweeteners to improve their flavour. Try to be label savvy where 79

possible, opting for non low-fat varieties and checking for ingredients that don’t belong or that you don’t recognise.

There are different types of fats, which can cause confusion. Overleaf, we explain the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats – polyunsaturated and monounsaturated, as well as unhealthy hydrogenated fats.

NUTRITION

FAT FACTS Here’s what you need to know when it comes to including the right fats in your diet

POLYUNSATURATED FAT Polyunsaturated fats (Omega 3 and 6) are regarded as healthy fats, of which the essential fatty acids we need in our diet are made up. It is important not to cook with these however, as they are not stable at high temperatures, and you should ideally keep them refrigerated.

MISO SALMON

Add a portion of oily fish to your diet three times a week

Oily fish such as salmon contains anti-inflammatory and brain boosting Omega 3. This simple yet delicious marinade of sweet miso (fermented soy bean paste) and maple syrup not only tastes fantastic but is rich in protein and provides added digestive support.

OMEGA 3 EPA & DHA is found in fish such as fresh salmon, mackerel, sardines, canned and smoked salmon, fresh tuna, herring and trout. Aim to eat 2-4 portions a week of oily fish (reduced to 1-2 portions in pregnant women).

OMEGA 6 Found in nuts and seeds,

including sunflower, chia, sesame and hemp, and their cold-pressed oils. It’s also important to eat the nutrients required to help the conversion of essential fatty acids in the body. These include magnesium (found in green veg, squash, pumpkin seeds), zinc and B vitamins (beef, pork, poultry and whole grains), biotin (eggs) and vitamin C.

HYDROGENATED FATS These are to be avoided.

Hydrogenation occurs when liquid oil is processed to become a solid or semi-solid structure, for example, margarine.

This takes place under extremely high temperatures, destroying the nutritional value. Hydrogenated fats are frequently used in processed foods such as cakes, cookies, biscuits, crisps and pastries.

MONOUNSATURATED FAT (OMEGA 9) These healthy fats are found in olive oil, avocados, most nuts (including brazils, hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, pecans, sesame seeds) and organic free-range poultry.

DOES YOUR FAMILY NEED MORE FAT? There are certain symptoms that may indicate that you would benefit from more essential fatty acids your diet. These include: • Dry skin • Pimples on upper arms • Eczema • Poor wound healing • Dandruff

• Brittle nails • Behavioural disorders • Learning problems • Low immunity • Tiredness/weakness

Ingredients • 2 salmon fillets • 1 tbsp sweet white miso paste • 1 tbsp maple syrup • ½ garlic clove, pasted Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Mix the miso, maple syrup and garlic together and massage into the salmon fillets all over. Place the salmon on to a roasting tin and roast in the oven for 10-15 minutes, until the fillet is cooked through.

Alternatively, heat a non-stick frying pan and pan-fry the salmon, starting skin-side down, flipping half way through to ensure even cooking.

This is delicious served with buttered rice and steamed broccoli.

TOP TIP

We would always encourage you to boost healthy fats through your diet using the foods mentioned above. However, you may wish to consider supplementing with a quality fish oil. Cod Liver Oil naturally contains vitamins A and D, which is particularly vital for healthy skin.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER CUPS A delicious and indulgent proteinpacked treat made without gluten, dairy or refined sugars. These cups taste fantastic and are also fun to make with little ones. You can try both smooth or crunchy peanut butter, either work well. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, helping to mop up damaging free radicals and reducing inflammation, as well as providing an energy boost. The peanuts provide a good dose of protein.

Serves 6-8 Ingredients • 80g dark chocolate (choose a gluten and dairy free variety such as Green & Black’s) • 80g peanut butter (we like Meridian or Biona) • 3 tbsp maple syrup • 25g coconut oil • 40ml Koko milk (or you can use tinned coconut milk for a richer, luxurious finish)

Method Firstly, to make the chocolate and coconut ganache, melt the dark chocolate in a glass bowl over a pan of gently simmering water (or you can use a microwave). Add the coconut oil until melted and combine. Next, add the coconut milk. At this point, the chocolate and coconut oil mix will thicken considerably.

To make the peanut base, melt the peanut butter in a small saucepan and gently stir in the maple syrup.

Spoon the mixture into paper cases and top with a generous layer of the chocolate coconut ganache. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes, or until firm.

Coconut oil is more expensive than other oils, but it carries its own nutritional and health benefits. It contains lauric acid, which is known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties, and it remains stable at high temperatures.

Its flavour lends itself well to stir fries and lots of Asianinspired dishes.

no sooner has she befriended a grasshopper, we’ve almost walked around it. At the foot of the town, we find a beautiful restaurant, its tented roof trailing with wisteria and grapes.

The next day, we take the short drive to Saklikent Gorge. At 20km, it’s the longest in Europe. Rushing torrents of icy water have cut 300 metres deep. In summer, it’s possible to cross the river, but be warned, temperatures are cryogenic. Lillia smiles the whole way across: safely clamped to my partner Ian’s back. After four attempts, I grimace my way across without even trying to feign bravery.

After a lunch of barbecued trout, we decided on white water rafting. Actually, it’s more shallow river rafting on inflatable rings.

Following our guide, we float downstream.

It’s breathtakingly beautiful as the land folds back into bleached quilts of rock. “Best day?”

I shout over to Lillia. “Definitely,” she replies.

Our last day is spent on Pataya Beach. Its warm waters gently lap honey-hued sands and provide the perfect nesting site for endangered loggerhead turtles. Come evening, I sit by the pool of our cottage, watching shooting stars.

Chirping crickets are interrupted only by the occasional burst of a nightingale and I think, “this is the best day of my life”. L

his is the best day of my life,” shrills Lillia while tickling the belly of a supine trout. Six years of nurturing and 2,000 air miles and her zenith is the underbelly of a fish.

We are in Turkey’s Taurus Mountains – just 45 minutes from the main coastal town of Fethiye. Lucent waterfalls tumble around us and meander through giant oaks. Yaka Park is a beatific high-altitude playground, where one can eat pancakes from giant tree houses.

We sink into doughy cushions and watch two women crafting flatbreads. Back from her piscine-stroking antics, Lillia is mesmerised.

Heading back to our accommodation in nearby Yaka Village, Tuscan-like hills are punctuated by gluts of trees: figs, orange trees and the fiery blooms of pomegranate. We’re staying at a mountain lodge beside the ancient Lycian town of Tlos. Pillars mark tombs carved into the hillside and with no such thing as ‘keep out’ signs here, Lillia happily clambers into the belly of the cool mountains.

The next morning, we drive through the vast mountain-top forests. We stop off to look at two disdainful ostriches while scooping up colossal pine cones. Soon we arrive at the abandoned town of Kayakoy. It’s very hot and Lillia is in no mood to look at ruins, but

Give your child plenty of opportunities to draw and trace to develop their pencil grip

T

he leap from nursery school to primary school can be a big adjustment not just for your child, but for you as well. If your little one feels prepared they will feel more confident, making the transition a lot smoother for both of you. In fact, preparing for school is so much more about their confidence and emotions rather than their academic skills and abilities. Sending a confident, independent and happy child to school is the true goal.

EMOTIONALLY

Preparing your child emotionally is one of the most important things you can do to help them. Children’s thoughts about starting school vary, some can hardly wait and others find it stressful. Prepare your child for what it’s going to be like in a positive way, but don’t oversell it as this could lead to disappointment. Discuss realistic expectations such as, “it’s going to be very exciting and busy so you may get a little tired or feel a little scared at times”. If possible, do a school visit, attend an open day or look at the website so the school seems familiar to your child.

Look at photos of other family members or your own school photos while discussing that everyone goes to ‘big school’ and how we all felt a bit nervous at first, which is normal.

Organising a play date with someone new will encourage them to make friends, or an outing with someone other than yourself will help them get used to being away from you for a longer period of time than they’re used to.

PRACTICALLY

The practical side of preparing your child goes hand in hand with the emotional side, as the two work together to help your child grow physically and emotionally. If your child is able to do things for themself they will become independent and in turn feel confident. Firstly, if they aren’t already, introduce dressing themselves. This will make life easier, especially since they will be doing school sport and getting dressed and undressed. Make an outing out of going together to buy their school uniform. When you get home, role-play getting dressed for school so they can learn to do it themselves.

Practice the morning routine and run – this will help both of you feel more relaxed and ready! A lovely activity to do together is to create a visual timetable of the routine, this also helps them to understand the concept of a routine and anticipate what comes next.

Preparing for school is much more about their confidence and emotions than academic skills and abilities Toilet training is vital and your child should be capable of going by themselves, as well as washing their hands and blowing their nose. At most independent schools they will be given school lunches and dinners, and so they should be able to eat with a knife and fork and understand healthy eating choices.

Introducing your child to road safety is a good skill for them to learn as their walk to school may be longer and they may go on outings.

Create jobs and chores in and around the home over the summer to further independence, responsibility and build self-esteem. Introduce them to hanging up their coat and putting things away so they learn management of their belongings. It also might be advisable to drop their afternoon nap and have an earlier bedtime. Once again, don’t stress if all of these skills haven’t been mastered properly by the time they start.

ACADEMICALLY

Preparing your child academically is not to say you need to teach your child everything they should know before they start school, but practicing the basics will help them feel more comfortable and it won’t be something entirely new. Once again, all children learn at different paces, it’s not a race. Chat to your 91

child’s teacher about what they are expected to know – generally, most schools would like your child to be able to count and recognise 1-20, know almost all their alphabetical sounds phonetically and recognise and write their own name, but this is just a guide. There are many ways for your child to learn these skills and if you want to do home learning you need to make it fun and relaxed. It could be as simple as pointing out letters around them, like ‘stop’ signs, and playing I Spy to associate letters and sounds. While shopping, ask them to look at how many apples you need and let them count them out, while at home, baking cakes together allows them to explore weights and measurements. Also give them opportunities to draw and trace to develop their pencil grip in preparation for writing.

The summer is long, so you want to keep their interest, knowledge, understanding and spark alive before reception.

Lastly, spend some quiet time with your child doing puzzles, painting and playing games. This will help build concentration and encourage them to be able to sit for long periods of time – boys tend to find this more difficult than girls!

Although bittersweet, take time to enjoy this special transition with your child. L

The school was founded in 1986 by Mary McCahery. Thirty years on, Mary – in her role as principal – is still very passionate about the school and the development of the pupils, as are her three daughters, who run the Woodentops day nurseries. The White House is very much a family school and great importance is placed on the family approach.

How do you ensure that every pupil achieves their full potential?

The White House prides itself on choosing to be deliberately small in size, with one form per year. Our smaller class sizes mean that every child will enjoy a more personalised teaching approach, exploring their talents and finding their strengths. We find out what really excites the children and then help them to excel. The staff know all the children well and work tirelessly to ensure every child feels valued and meets their full potential.

What kind of feedback do you receive?

Our children go on to prestigious schools, including Dulwich College, James Allen’s Girls’ School, Alleyn’s School, Woldingham and Bedales, and many of them return to visit, and even come back for work experience!

Our parents are full of praise, and it is not uncommon for us to educate a whole family from Kindergarten through to Year 6. I often hear from parents that they appreciate the extra care their children experience from the committed staff. From children we hear that they feel safe at school, have great friends and, above all, have fun while learning.

How do you see The White House School progressing in the future?

Alongside many more years of excellent education, we are developing our science provision and curriculum, concentrating on investigative and experimental science skills, and recently The White House has invested in a new IT suite and WiFi infrastructure.

How did you set up Diddi Dance?

Last year Anne-Marie scooped the Woman Franchisor of the Year award

I’d been teaching older children dance for years and then started some preschool work in a play centre in 2003. Many of the parents would enquire about preschool dance classes as there weren’t any available locally, so I agreed to start a taster class. My first class was full and as the weeks went by, I began developing more structured lesson plans.

Tell us more about your background.

I trained professionally with a firstclass degree at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where I focused on teaching and dance movement therapy. I performed all over the world, including the Royal Opera House, the Brit Awards and on Top of the Pops, before discovering my love of teaching children in my late twenties.

Since launching Diddi Dance, you’ve had two children yourself, have they changed your outlook on the business?

I’ve always been self employed and benefited from flexible working hours but this became even more important with the arrival of my son and daughter. Teaching is my passion but to balance family life and grow the business, it became essential for me to take on other staff.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

Letting go. When you’ve started a business through something you love it’s always hard to leave it in the hands of others. I still struggle, but communication is key and I couldn’t be more confident in our team.

And your proudest moment?

There are lots, every day. Working with this age group means I’m constantly seeing children grow in confidence. To see this happen through dance makes me really proud.

What’s your advice for anyone looking to set up their own business?

First of all, find something you have a passion for. Then accept that you can’t know every aspect of business so seek expert advice and let others help.

What’s in the pipeline for Diddi Dance?

We are currently developing classes with the Wheelchair Dance Sport Association so we can support children with additional needs.

We will also be launching our Diddi Dolls and a video subscription service to enable kids to dance in the comfort of their own home! L
