for turning. The Portland Hospital’s Fiona Walkinshaw discusses the options available on page 84. One thing I’ve tried to do this year is be a little bit more conscious of my footprint, and the concept of leading an organic lifestyle is certainly having a moment. This choice certainly becomes more considered as a parent. Martha Alexander looks into going au naturale in motherhood on page 50. If the change in weather has you yearning for a great escape, whether it be your last holiday as a twosome, or you’re rounding the whole family up for a multi-generational break, we have more travel inspo than you can shake a bottle of SPF50+ at, beginning on page 107. Lastly, if like me, you’re a sucker for all things snuggly and cute, I urge you to check out our adorable shopping pages starting on page 25. Join me next issue when things will get Christmas crazy. Until then, happy reading!

I can’t quite believe we’re on our December issue already – where has this year gone?! I’m not complaining though, I adore this season – and not just because of the fabulous run-up to Christmas. ’Tis the season for digging out the chunky knits, wrapping up in a winter coat and admiring all the cosy baby attire in shop windows, as well as dosing up on hot chocolate and comforting soups (check out the beef stew recipe on page 102 – it’s delicious). These may be reassuring familiarities, but this issue we’re actually celebrating the opposite, as we champion the trends that are taking the baby world by force. Let’s start at the beginning; labour wards across the UK are being filled with tealights, room sprays, and the sweet sounds of preprepared music playlists. That’s right, this issue we’re talking hypnobirthing. If you’re expecting, check out page 78 to see what all the hype is about. On a personal level, something else that seems to be a ten-a-penny at the moment is friends carrying breech. A proud breech baby myself, I’m aware this is hardly a modern development, yet many friends seem to have stubborn little ones who simply aren’t

Where were you born? Lancashire. Where do you live now? East London. Go-to garment for colder days? A grey cashmere jumper. I have about 12! Any exciting travel plans over the winter? We usually try to get away in March when the weather’s utterly depressing. And squeeze in a weekend without the kids at Soho Farmhouse! See Charlotte’s cute babywear styling on p.38

Where were you born? Kingston Hospital in South London. Where do you live now? Southfields, London. Go-to garment for colder days? My Finistere cold-water surfing coat (I’ve never actually been cold-water surfing). Any exciting travel plans over the winter? Ideally, Scotland’s North Coast 500, our first family ski trip, and a girls’ weekend in Morocco. Read Holly’s multi-gen holiday tips on p.110

MY ESSENTIALS

Let’s start with your new collection for Mini Club – as a creative person, what’s the design process like for you? It’s just lovely – for a first meeting I’ll bring Pinterest boards, bits of fabric or sometimes just a general idea. This collection’s based on something I love – arts and creativity. We start by bouncing ideas off each other, and meet throughout the year to look at samples, as well as fit, texture and safety. I’m particularly happy with the way this range’s colour palette blends between genders.

FEARNE COTTON

The broadcasting icon discusses designing kids’ clothes, dealing with tantrums and why she’ll never be caught telling her two what to wear shorts that were like swimming trunks, socks and Crocs. He had every combination going on, but I want him to express himself. It’s the same with Honey, she’s a real tomboy! I don’t want them to feel hemmed in by what I think they should be wearing – if they go out

Do you dress your own children [Rex, five, and Honey, three] in gender-neutral clothing? I let them get themselves dressed. My son Rex is massively into fashion and can wear the most ridiculous things out in public – the other day he wore a white shirt, clip-on tie, blue waistcoat, Glitter clogs a Chelsea hoodie, £24.99, crocs.co.uk

Rex is really into fashion

looking ludicrous, why not? Do you have a favourite piece from your line? I think it’s the girls’ navy parka with the pink faux-fur lining. Most kids love wearing parkas, and I wanted to do something that felt a bit cooler, so to add that nice shock of pink was really fun. Where do you get Rex and Honey’s clothes from? They wear a lot of the Mini Club collection as samples are always at home! They also get quite a lot of hand-me-downs from friends’ kids – a friend of Rex’s older sister plays for the girls Chelsea team, so he gets all these great little tracksuits and tops. My mum buys them the rest of the clothes

– every time she comes around she’s laden with new t-shirts and pyjama sets. Speaking of home, what do their bedrooms look like? Rex just had his bedroom redecorated – he wanted it turquoise with fish wallpaper on one wall. He’s really happy with it, but he wants bunk beds next so he can have sleepovers. Honey’s is cosy and nice with nothing too fancy; it’s pink with big herons flying on the wallpaper. Has motherhood changed you? Oh my god, in so many ways. The best bits? You learn a lot about yourself and life. I had to dig a lot deeper than I had previously in a lot of areas of life – like responsibility and and time management which I never ever gave a thought about before. It’s military organisation constantly, but they’re all good things that have really helped

Honey's cosy bedroom

How do you achieve a good work-life balance? I’m still figuring it out! For me, it’s a constant juggling act because I do so many varied jobs. I try to look four months ahead in the diary; I don’t want to see weeks where I’m working six out of seven days because I can’t mentally deal with that. I want to

34 | baby-magazine.co.uk

Fearne was pleased that she was able to merge the traditional gender colour palettes in the AW18 range

Honey’s mental wellbeing? It’s about getting those basics right early on, which means getting outside every day, making sure we go on a bike ride, go swimming and use our bodies. I teach them about the importance of food and putting good fruit and veg into their systems. We can talk about those trickier subjects later, but for now it’s just about keeping it simple. I also think letting your kid feel upset is important – my instinct is to cover it up with a gummy bear or a toy, but actually if they’re having a tantrum you just have to walk away and let them learn that

it’s alright to feel angry and sad. Looking after a kid’s mental health isn’t just softening the blow and making life gentle all the time – that’s one I’m still mastering. What does a typical weekend look like in your house? There isn’t really one! My husband’s away quite a lot at weekends, so we try to get friends over with kids the same age so they can play together. If it’s a nice day we’ll get out of the house; we’re really lucky to live in quite a green area so we go to lots of little cafes, get hot chocolates and sit around – nothing too crazy. Every now and then we’ll go to the aquarium because my son’s obsessed, but the last thing I want to do is come into London. The odd trip like that is amazing but I think it’s equally important that they’re just at home chilling out in the garden or painting. Bamboo sleeping bag, £98, littleearthbaby.com I’m completely obsessed with this revolutionary organic sleeping bag from Little Earth Baby. It’s thermoregulating, so it keeps their temperature safe and I love the fact that it has 100 per cent bamboo wadding inside, making it truly organic. The brand had a pop-up in Notting Hill a few months ago and everything sold out within days!

WHERE TO GO

My husband’s birthday is at the end of December and something the children love doing with him is visiting the reindeer. You’ll find them in Covent Garden every year for petting sessions on Saturdays between noon and 4pm, or at ZSL London Zoo. It’s always a great photo opportunity and it’s quite a sweet family winter tradition to keep up. zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo

t this time of year, I love nothing more than wrapping up warm and going out on long walks with the family before snuggling up by the fire to watch a movie. One of my favourite things is filling up the bird table outside our kitchen window each morning. My daughter leaves a little bowl of warm water for the robins to have a bit of a bath in. My little one’s doing really well with his weaning. To make life easier for me, I batch cook on Sundays using the lovely root vegetables from the garden. The baby loves them as snacks and the rest of the family have them with fish, chicken or pies. They’re full of nutrients and really easy to make. Enjoy!

t’s a term that calls to mind apples picked from a dewy orchard in rural Somerset, or an egg still warm from the free-range, pasture-raised hen which laid it. It speaks of healthy bodies, ruddy cheeks, green countryside, cleanliness, purity and wholesome taste. Organic. It’s entirely synonymous with living well – we all know that by now – but what exactly does it mean to strive for as ‘organic’ a lifestyle as possible? And can you stick to organic living during and after pregnancy, when your days can be fraught and you don’t necessarily have the time to meander through farmers’ markets and the internet for natural bounty for you and your baby? More and more people are seeking to stay true to their organic lifestyles when they become parents. This doesn’t just extend to food. We’re talking beauty, clothing, linen, nappies, toiletries. But what does it really mean? And why is it better? The definition of ‘organic’ is essentially ‘natural’. Things which are organic have not been altered in any way: not enhanced by chemicals, nor conditioned with pesticides and are free from additives of any kind. Some research has shown that pesticides used on fruit and vegetables can be harmful

I

to humans – especially babies and children but the real concern seems to be in nonorganic meat and dairy products. Often, farm animals are given antibiotics. When humans consume these animals – or byproducts of them – they ingest the antibiotics needlessly, reducing the medicine’s future effectiveness for themselves. Choosing organic items, isn’t just about making better choices for personal health, it’s also making a better choice for the environment. Organic farmers use either no or fewer pesticides, meaning wildlife in and around their farm wildlife flourishes. Organic farms also offer better food and more comfortable habitats for animals. One of the best places to start when it comes to organic living, is in the kitchen. “When it comes to feeding my kids I always try to go for the organic option,” says Karis Gesua, founder of Lickalix – which specialises in making organic food for children. “Growing and making food without chemicals is hard but the produce you get is definitely worth it. Also, organic food tastes better.” Gesua admits that cost can make eating exclusively organic food difficult for some families. “Rightly so, it comes at a price premium,” she says. “Working in the industry

There’s never been a better time for mums and babies when it comes to organic bath and beauty products

52 | baby-magazine.co.uk

IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS TO KNOW THEIR LABELS – FOODS NEED TO HAVE THE CERTIFIED LOGO babies are having a real moment. Eliminating nasties from your bathing and beauty regime without compromising on efficiency or fragrance is now really easy. With brands like Mama Mio, Weleda and Organic Sprout offering luxury products from shampoos to sun creams which contain natural ingredients – shunning parabens and sodium laurel sulfates amongst others, which studies have shown, cause both skin complaints and in the case of SLS, cataracts. Beds and wardrobes can now be furnished with organic cotton, a choice with a multitude of benefits. Not only does cotton feel better on the skin, allowing it to breathe, but it’s better for the environment, thanks to organic cotton crops not using synthetic chemicals

which poison the water, earth and air. Organic cotton farms are also kinder to the health of the workers, who don’t have to be in frequent contact with toxic chemicals. As with most things, common sense is required when considering lifestyle alterations. Living an organic life can be overwhelming, time consuming, costly and really difficult. Not wanting or being able to ingest and swathe yourself in organic things all the time is OK. The last thing new mothers, especially, need is even more pressure to uphold a certain kind of lifestyle. So, take baby steps. Read up about the benefits of organic farming. If it speaks to you, make little changes to your life’s staples, and hopefully you’ll feel the benefits!

I know the many and tough hoops that grows and manufacturers go through to make sure you can call something ‘organic’. If I can’t afford organic all the time I go for things that make my life easier, save me time and bring different organic ingredients altogether – like my lollies. I also recommend opting for organic vegetables that are grown in the ground, where non-organic produce is at risk at absorbing more of the nasties.” It’s really important for parents to know their labels – foods need to have the certified logo on it in to be legitimately organic. “It can be really frustrating reading some of the claims and long ingredient lists on foods, and working with Organix has really helped me to become more label savvy,” says TV personality, food investigator and mum of two, Cherry Healey. “I like to know where my food comes from, and what’s in it, and if I see the organic logo I feel confident it’s been made to the highest standards.” The quality and contents of what goes into the body is, everyone agrees, vitally important to health and functionality. However, what goes onto our bodies would ideally be of good quality too, from bathroom to wardrobe. After all, the skin is the body’s biggest organ. Organic toiletries for both mothers and

nyone who has witnessed Rose Byrne’s stellar performance in this year’s £300m box-office smash Peter Rabbit, will suppose the actress could slip effortlessly into English rural life. Yet there’s a couple of disconnects between the 39 year old’s character and real life, despite an impressive turn in one of 2018’s biggest family-friendly films. Firstly, Byrne usually converses in an accent more likened to Lake Eyre than the Lake District, given the fact she has spent most of her life in Australia. Then there’s the fact that although she tends to Peter Rabbit and his family with a protectiveness and tenderness that’s wonderful to watch, her true mothering exploits are of a more human persuasion, given that she and husband Bobby Cannavale are parents to sons Rocco, two, and Rafa, who is one in November. Byrne’s arrival at motherhood’s door has been one many of us can relate to – ambitious, career-minded and keen to find the right partner, while never succeeding, the actress came out of a relationship with Australian writer, director and actor Brendan Cowell in 2010. “We had done a lot for each other – he even relocated to New York from Sydney when my career escalated after Damages, but you have to know when a situation is working and when it isn’t.” That “situation” left Byrne thirtysomething, single, and away from home. “It was a tough time - I’d had a stable job for five years and then suddenly I was on my own, not knowing what I was doing next… in work or in life. “Was there a feeling that this whole family thing might not happen for me? It was probably too early to be going down that route, but you do start to look at the weeks and months going by.” Yet within two years the actress had met Bobby Cannavale. The popular American actor already had a grownup son, Jake, from his marriage to American screenwriter Jenny Lumet, yet within four years of the two getting together, baby Rocco arrived. Then, in December 2017, the proud father announced that their second child, Rafa, had been born. “We liked the name, and I hadn’t given any of my children a Latin name yet, so I decided to honour my mum’s side of the family there,” he told reporters. “I guess the other thing is Rafael Nadal had such a great year and we were constantly keeping up with him and watching all his matches, so we thought ‘how about Rafa, that goes well with Rocco’! And, you know, Rocco

According to husband Bobby Cannavale, Rocco loves being a big brother to Rafa

loves being a big brother – he’s a terrific big brother. He’s very doting, loving and gentle, and we couldn’t ask for anything more.” Of course, the greatest thing you can do as an actress when you have children at home is make a blockbuster movie and bring it back for them to watch, and Rose was quick to oblige. “It’s true,” she laughs. “It was actually a big incentive to be allowed to make a movie that my kids could watch. I still get goosebumps now thinking of them seeing their mum running around with rabbits, and bringing that element of magic to their lives is exciting for me. “It wasn’t easy at, times – you’re making a children’s movie that requires high energy, technicality and incredible choreography, and that was very challenging; but knowing it would make my own kids happy was priceless. “It was also really nice that the film was shot in my hometown of Sydney. That was a huge bonus for me because I don’t get home that often, so this was the perfect excuse for my family to decamp there and spend the summer all together, and it was probably the hottest weather I’ve ever encountered!” It sounds like Byrne has created quite a successful balancing act for her family of four. “It’s going well, but I was so unprepared,” she admits. “Nothing can ever prepare you until you’re in it and that little person is right in front of you. Everything you think you learned – and I was reading all the books, talking to everyone – evaporates. I thought I was prepared but didn’t have a clue. All you can do

NOTHING CAN PREPARE YOU UNTIL YOU’RE IN IT AND THAT LITTLE PERSON IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU is take every day as it comes, because every day with them is a constant education, but a brilliant one at the same time.” The couple’s trips to Australia will certainly open up the best childcare options where grandparents are concerned, but the 10,000mile journey may be slightly prohibitive! “My parents actually live in Tasmania now which is still a two-hour flight from Sydney, but they stay in the city when we’re there, which is great, and my sister lives there too. “At the heart of it is knowing that family time’s really important, and factoring in my other sister and brother. There’s never a time where I don’t miss them because we’re all scattered in different places, but it just makes getting together all the more special. “It’s really when I get there I see how much time has passed and how much I’ve missed when it comes to my relatives, that makes me

a little sad. And now that I have kids, I want them to spend time with my family – you want that for them. But we’re always looking to find a way, and having somewhere to take the kids back to like Sydney – the most beautiful city in the world… The beaches, the coastline, the skyline, the weather, the diversity – is an amazing thing, and I’m sure something they’ll continue to treasure that, the older they get.” Whether the couple will stop at two children remains to be seen, although it’s worth noting the actress’s latest filming commitments – Instant Family is set for a February 2019 release. She stars alongside Mark Wahlberg in what is a conveniently timed comedy where the lead couple adopt in bulk, ending up with three young children. A view to the future, or just a coincidence? “A coincidence,” comes the reply, with just a hint of a smile.

THE REVIEW

Vicky Moore AN D H ER L ATE ST AR RIVAL POPPY, PUT TH E JOOL Z H U B TO TH E TE ST

T

hree years ago, when my sister bought the Joolz Geo for her first, I knew if I was ever to have another baby I’d love a pushchair from this brand. As I fell pregnant with my third last autumn, after a rather big gap – my eldest Sam is now 11, and Sophie is nine – it’s fair to say my knowledge of parenting gadgetry is a little rusty. So when Joolz announced it was releasing a smaller Hub pushchair around Poppy’s due date, I knew it would be a great option for us.

GOOD LOOKING?

Poppy’s ca tching som e Zs in her hap py place

If, like me, you prefer neutral tones then definitely. I love all three colour options (Hippo Grey, Parrot Blue and Nero Black), but the winner for us was the Hippo Grey – my partner would buy everything in grey if he could! Complemented by the tan leather handle and bumper bar and the silver chassis, it looks great against any backdrop or with any outfit. The branding on the hood and chassis is very smart and subtle too. We’ve had so many compliments on it too, so it can’t be just us!

PRACTICALITY AND DRIVEABILITY I was quite surprised at how compact it is – and after a couple of goes the folding comes pretty naturally. The carry strap is also a welcome feature. It’s passed the test in train stations, country walks, dashes around the shop, and even on the beach – it really does appear to perform across all terrains. It’s worth noting that if you’re strolling on bumpy ground It’ll be a shame to cover up this chic pushchair in the winter

Vicky and her partner have received lots of compliments on the Hippo Grey Joolz Hub

you can lock the wheels for a smoother ride. The leatherette handle is lovely to touch and can be pushed with one hand – the handlebar is constantly moved up and down with varying heights pushing it – I even have Sam and Sophie begging to give it a go! The basket is easy to chuck things in and out, too.

COMFORT Over these last few months Poppy seems her most content when she’s being pushed in the Hub, which must be a good sign. We decided to opt for the carrycot, its breathable mattress and large sun hood seems to keep Poppy comfy, but in hindsight

The Joolz Hub’s wheels can be locked for a smoother ride on uneven terrains

I think we should have opted for the cocoon as it’s less bulky, can be folded with the pushchair and has a bit more longevity. But as long as Poppy’s comfortable in it, that’s the main thing.

VERDICT We really love our Joolz Hub, it’s the perfect companion for us. As the winter comes in we just need to get a raincover for it. It seems a shame to hide such beauty, but we want to keep this classic in good condition, too. Big thumbs up, Joolz. From £549, my-joolz.co.uk

t’s becoming more and more common for families to invest in pieces that offer longevity. Cots turning into cot beds, high chairs into stools, and while it’s not yet possible for a pushchair to transform into baby’s first bike, parents are certainly considering their options if they’re hoping to have children close together in age. The market for single pushchairs that can be adapted to doubles is growing, with many of the most popular brands offering one-stop solutions for transporting a growing family. Here are some of the top contenders:

I

iCandy Orange

Hugely popular British brand iCandy have two offerings in this department: the iCandy Peach and the more recent addition, iCandy Orange. The whole design of the Orange revolves around longevity. iCandy have even added an integrated ride on board to the pushchair’s frame – holding an impressive 20kg. In theory you have everything you need in the box, with the included carrycot and seat on their own frames, just use the handy converter kit (included in the box) when another baby arrives to add your carrycot onto the chassis with your seat unit. If you’ll be putting both children in the seat unit, you’ll need to purchase an extra one. £1,040, icandyworld.com

Silver Cross Wave

Iconic British pushchair brand Silver Cross, has a real luxury offering in this department that has been turning heads since its launch in 2017. The Wave really is the crème de la crème in this field. A flexible travel system designed to carry a newborn, yet future proofed for the arrival of a second baby – straight out of the box. With this stress-free purchase you’ll get everything you need for your growing family; even two mosquito nets and rain covers! £995, silvercrossbaby.com

Nuna Demi Grow

When it comes to families, it’s hard to plan for the future, but Nuna’s Demi Grow is here to alleviate some stress in the pushchair department. Starting life as a single travel system, the Demi Grow is crafted to easily convert to a double. In the box you’ll find the pushchair chassis, main seat, car-seat adaptors (two sets), rain cover and footmuff. To make this a double, you’ll need to buy an additional carrycot (use from birth), or sibling seat (use from six months). From £600, nuna.eu

Uppababy Vista

Perfectly geared for life with multiples, whether that be twins, two siblings, or even three children by adding its additional ride along board, the Uppababy Vista is a popular choice when it comes to multitasking. You’ll find different packages available so what’s included in the box can vary depending on the retailer, but in most instances you’ll need to buy lower or upper adapters to house the extra kit. BABY TALK

y some heavenly constellation, I’m sat with foils on my head in the local hairdressers. Noah’s now three weeks old and currently at home nestled in the arms of my mum, who arrived on my doorstep two days ago, took one look at me and said, pitifully, “why don’t you go and get your roots done?” I patted my boobs and made some thin protestations about milk flow before realising that actually yes, this was a very good idea. And of course, she was right. Though I felt almost high with the anxiety-induced adrenalin rush of leaving my baby at home, with my hair freshly honeyed, I walk to the bus stop feeling brighter, more familiar, and well… engorged. This is only my second time out of the homestead since Noah was born. I was determined not to feel pressured into getting dressed and getting ‘out and about.’ Much like the completely outdated – but persistent – pressure to have dropped the baby weight within milliseconds with the ‘I started breastfeeding and it just fell off’ humble-brag, we new mothers now have an altogether more insidious cultural phenomena to contend with:

It’s not the nimblest for hopping on the tube, but no other model surpasses the Priam in style, quality, ergonomics and durability. It’s the iPhone of prams. An investment that will literally go the distance. Cybex Priam Lux Travel System, £1,215, cybex-online.com

THE GOOD STUFF The perfect segue from the snug womb, these pram inlays are 100 per cent natural sheepskin, both wicking away heat and locking it in, depending on the climate. So soft and cosy, I want to jump in there too. Blue Rose Pram Liner, £98, binibamba.com

DIARY OF A MUM part 4

I devoured this book just before Noah arrived. It gently posits the argument for curling up in bed for several weeks post-birth and is filled with replenishing recipes to knit you back together. The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother, £18.99, amazon.co.uk

IN H ER L ATE ST COLUM N Joanna Ellner H E ADS OUT OF TH E HOM E WITH BABY N OAH IN TOW post-partum presentee-ism. Like that one person at the office who works late just to show everyone how supremely dedicated they are, new mothers now appear to be locked in an unspoken

competition to see who can be seen first at the posh café, coiffed and maquillaged, baby in hand. Instead, I’d been attempting to observe the age-old Chinese ritual of zuo yuezi, a practice of pyjama-clad confinement for new mothers to help restore and strengthen our bodies following birth. In Chinese culture, sisters, mothers and aunts flock around the new mother, bringing hot chicken soup and tea to her in bed while she can indulge in all that delicious bonding amongst the bedsheets. Thing is, like most London dwellers, I don’t have a coterie of family around me. And Ed – who has kept us clean and

fed for the past two weeks – is now back at work. I last 16 days before I start to feel slightly vampiric in my avoidance of actual sunlight. It’s time for me to buckle up and Harrison Ford my way out of the house. I make my pilgrimage to the park – all 86 beautiful acres of it. I feel the glorious sun beat down on me. I give the cursory nod to other mums pushing their prams. The park is our turf. It’s where our babies are twice as likely to fall asleep and following which I can – what glee! – sit and reply to a text message from a friend. Walking is the most perfunctory, base form of bodily movement, but

up until now, had caused me too much pain. Now I can walk again with a not-unreasonable degree of acceleration. I last 20 minutes before Noah wakes crying and I anxiously head home. I exit the park and stop to wait at a zebra crossing. A guy on a motorbike stops and shouts, “just walk out and the cars will stop!” “No, I’m going to wait for the cars to stop before pushing my pram into oncoming traffic, THANK YOU,” I holler back, incensed. “Mum, I was mansplained to about how to cross the flipping road, today,” I shriek over the phone that evening. I guess some things never change.

PARENTING

Fair share Georgina Blaskey E XPLOR E S TH E GROWING TR EN D OF SHAR ED PAR ENTAL LE AVE

arents are entitled to split the care of their baby between them through shared parental leave, but for many it isn’t an option they’re aware of or have even considered. Before you settle for standard maternity leave, look at your options and ask yourself if this could be the best choice for everyone – including the baby.

P

What is shared parental leave? Shared parental leave and pay helps eligible parents combine work with family life. Parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave – 37 weeks of which is paid – if they meet certain eligibility criteria. Traditionally, it has only been an option for the mother to take paid time off to look after a newborn. Now, most couples in paid work and bringing up a child together can share leave following the birth or adoption of their child. Parents can take leave at different times in their child’s first year, so that there’s always one of them at home, or double up by taking leave at the same time. The rights apply to parents in work, including those who are adopting, same-sex couples, co-habiting couples, and couples bringing up a child together, even if the baby’s from a previous relationship.

leave short and exchange it for shared parental leave. Both parents will then have flexibility in how to split up the rest of the leave entitlement of up to 50 weeks. For example, if a mother ends her maternity leave 12 weeks after her child’s birth, that leaves 40 weeks of leave. She may choose to take 30 weeks, so her partner can take the other 10 weeks. Alternatively, the couple may choose to take 20 weeks of leave at the same time. Can parents take leave when they want? Yes, the flexibility means that shared parental leave doesn’t have to all be taken in one go. A parent can book up to three blocks of leave

How much are parents paid? Shared parental leave pay is £145.18 a week or 90 per cent of an employee’s average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. There’s a possibility that an employer may offer more. This is the same as statutory maternity pay, except that during the first six weeks, statutory maternity pay amounts to 90 per cent of whatever the employee earns, with no maximum. Shared parental pay is only given for 37 weeks. The remaining 13 weeks of leave entitlement, if taken, is unpaid.

Does this change regular maternity leave? Fathers will still be entitled to two weeks of paid paternity leave. The new rules replace additional paternity leave. Mothers still take the initial two weeks’ maternity leave after birth, but they can then cut their maternity

68 | baby-magazine.co.uk

in the course of the child’s first year, but they must give their employer at least eight weeks’ notice before taking leave. An employer may agree to shorter blocks of just a week or more, but that decision’s up to them. A mother who wants this flexibility can take her leave as shared parental leave – even if the father takes none of it – rather than traditional maternity leave. A mother can also let her employer know before the baby’s born that she doesn’t plan to use all of her 52 weeks’ maternity leave and wants to convert some of it into shared parental leave. Her partner could then use this leave to help out in the first weeks after birth, while she’s still on maternity leave.

How do these new leave development affect businesses? Shared parental leave rules have replaced what was known as additional paternity leave, but concerns have been raised that only a fraction of new fathers take the opportunity of longer paternity leave. Shared parental leave and pay enables mothers who want to return to work early to do so as their partners are able to share childcare responsibly with them. In addition, in contrast to traditional maternity leave, employees can stop and start shared parental leave and return to work between periods of leave, for example during a particularly busy period or to complete a particular work project, if they wish.

F

inancially it made sense for us to do shared parental leave when our son Milo was born, so I took seven months off and my partner Owen took four months off when I went back to work. Initially my company was happy as it meant I was coming back sooner, but it quickly became clear before I left that in my maledominated office most of them thought that I’d change my mind, so I didn’t feel like I was taken seriously. At Owen’s work, they knew nothing about it, so my employers helped by giving his company the information they needed. Legally they had to let him take the leave, so while they struggled initially when he suggested it, once they realised he was eligible they were fine about it and it hasn’t affected his career adversely. Shared parental leave has so many benefits. It’s hard going back and leaving your baby so leaving them with your partner makes it so much easier. Milo is closer to his dad as a result and not just clingy with me. Owen has a good level of understanding of how much work is involved and it’s good for our relationship – we have an equal partnership. More people should do it, but the social norms haven’t broken down yet, so it can be challenging. Owen didn’t meet up with the NCT group in the way I had, but he kept going to the baby classes to keep Milo’s routine going. He found it hard being the only man and not having a group around him; it’s not so easy when you’re the only dad around! But he was happy just to go along as father and son – and Milo was happy with that too!”

ender-reveal parties have become the ultimate way to cherish the surprise and share the sex of your baby with close family and friends in one wonderful, memorable afternoon. Whether you choose to find out the gender of your baby yourselves beforehand and surprise your guests, or hand the results over to someone else so it’s a surprise for you, there are many ways you can make the big announcement. Gather up a stash of opaque balloons filled with pink or blue confetti and pop away to reveal the colour! You could do a similar thing with party poppers, too. The falling confetti looks great in photographs. Give your results to a cake maker and ask them to create a design made with pink or blue sponge covered with vanilla or chocolate icing. When it’s time for cake, gather everyone around the table and cut that first slice with a flourish! A piñata that explodes with pink- or blue-coloured sweets or confetti is a fun way to get everyone involved, and younger guests will love it. Having founded innovative nursery furniture brand Mokee in 2013, the e-commerce extraordinaire and father-of-two now divides his time between his home in Forest Hill and the brand’s HQ in Krakow, Poland, where the operations, design and marketing are based. “I like travelling a lot – it’s exhausting, but I think it also provides a balance,” Samuel

explains. “Karolina [his wife] and I run the business, and I think if we were working and living together all the time, seeing each other constantly, it’d become too much. Our current set-up works really well. It also means that every day is different, even when I stay in the same place! That’s what I love about my working life now; it gives me such diversity.” In its mission to transform the hum-drum nursery into a baby’s ‘very first kingdom’, Mokee has proven a hit with parents from day one, offering practical, simple and stylish products that are “neither dull and cheap nor premium designer”. What makes it unique is its guarantee to deliver safe and well-made furniture that appeals to the masses, not just those who can afford it. The co-founder’s frustrations began when he became a father for the first time in 2008, following the birth of his daughter, Amelie. “We struggled at the time to find products that weren’t too expensive, but still of a high quality. These days there seems to be plenty happening in the baby industry, but 10 years ago I think it was a lot worse. We just never knew where to buy anything from, and the nursery was our biggest issue.” The couple had their second child, Alexander, in 2010, but it wasn’t until December 2012 that they seriously considered addressing this gap in the market. In partnership with Samuel’s mother, they began developing the Mini Cot: a simple, Scandinavian-style baby bed that boasts a compact, space-saving design, but would be sold at half the cost of those produced by more premium brands. “We initially did a quick test on eBay, to validate the need for the product. I commissioned a freelancer to produce the design, got 250 of them made, and the first batch of cots sold in about three weeks. From there I was like, ‘great, let’s keep going!’”. Five years on, Mokee has expanded rapidly, adding not just developments to its Mini Cot, but a whole new product range that currently includes the WoolNest – a soft, natural felt moses basket – tipiz, a high chair, nursery accessories and more. Research by the brand also revealed that five per cent of babies living in the capital are now sleeping in a Mokee cot. Storage, caster wheels, changing areas and teething rails are just some of the extra features that have been added to the Mini Cot, but Samuel still very much considers it a work in progress. “We’re constantly

be a r y should se r u n e th believes kin do Samuel ver rs s b a b

developing it because we want it to be the very best in the market – the kind of product that can fulfil pretty much every need a parent faces when they have a baby.” And the creative process? Samuel admits he’s still very hands-on when it comes to design and generating new ideas. “I’m no product designer, but I’ve learned a lot over the last five years,” Samuel says. “I really enjoy it actually, and I think because the Mini Cot worked so well from day one, it really gave me the confidence to keep developing other products. I’d love to be able to do all the technical drawings, but I think my cot would end up looking a bit strange!” The co-founders are also heavily influenced by Scandinavian design, crediting the style for inspiring Mokee’s “simple, stylish and economically manufactured” pieces, and making it a good price point for the customer. Mokee’s direct-to-consumer approach does them plenty of favours, too. “We don’t sell our furniture via big retailers, which really helps

PROFILE

2019 is set to bring many new Mokee developments, including a new cot, design collaborations and product additions

WE JUST NEVER KNEW WHERE TO BUY ANYTHING, AND THE NURSERY WAS OUR BIGGEST ISSUE to keep costs down,” Samuel says. “I’ve always been really passionate about providing value in all my work, and when we saw start-ups like Made.com and Everlane in the US trying and succeeding with this direct-to-consumer model, we decided to try it for ourselves.” “I think if you sell the same stuff online as everybody else via the bigger retailers, it’s a lot more competitive and you end up in a bit of a price war. But with Mokee, it’s our own brand,

our own customer base, and I think we’re better off that way.” Next year is set to be an exciting one for the brand, as he’s keen to tell me there’s “a major product coming out in 2019. It’s probably going to be a different cot, but one that complements our existing designs.” Further collaborations may also be in the pipeline, following the success of Mokee’s recent partnership with Slovenian brand Froc for the launch of the froKee high chair. There’s also set to be new product line additions, too. And how does he spend his limited spare

time? “There’s something quite ironic about running a baby brand and not seeing your own kids enough,” he laughs. “I work a lot, but I used to work a lot more than I do now, so any spare time I have, I spend with them.” “Could you have two little entrepreneurs in the making there?” I ask. “Maybe! The kids are keen to help us,” he says. “Sometimes we ask them to come up with product ideas, like ‘design me a high chair’. What they come up with is amazing, actually. I love that they care about the brand, and that they’re proud of it.”

LABOUR

The rise of hypnobirthing Siobhan Miller, HYPNOBIRTHING TE ACH ER AN D FOU N DER OF TH E POSITIVE BIRTH COM PANY, E XPLOR E S TH E GROWING TR EN D IN TH E L ABOU R ROOM here’s no doubt that hypnobirthing is growing in popularity. What was once viewed as an alternative way to prepare for birth is now considered mainstream and a recognised form of antenatal education, endorsed by the NHS and the Royal College of Midwives. An increasing number of NHS trusts are offering classes within their hospitals and the rise in practitioners running private tuition reflects the newfound demand. If you’re a mum who has given birth in the last couple of years, chances are you fall into one of two camps: you either did a hypnobirthing course, or you wish you did. When I began teaching in 2015, most couples attending my courses were second time parents desperately seeking a new way to approach birth, having experienced a traumatic birth with their first. These women may have considered hypnobirthing unnecessary previously, or simply hadn’t heard of it first time around. But now, having given birth without, they come to me seeking a better birth and the necessary tools to achieve this. This was indeed what brought me to hypnobirthing. And it worked, not just for me but thousands of other women in the same boat, helping us overcome trauma and experience the wonderful, positive and healing birth of our dreams! But now when I teach group classes the majority attending are first-time parents and I believe this is testament to how commonplace hypnobirthing has become. It’s no longer something people are driven to in the hope of overcoming a previous negative experience, but something women are doing from the

get go. And what’s brilliant about this is that first-time mums are having amazing birth experiences with their first babies. There’s no need to go through the tough times to get to the good; it’s possible to get it right from the very start. The main reason hypnobirthing is becoming more popular is simple: it really works. And because it makes such a profound difference to women’s birth experiences (and how they feel in pregnancy and the postnatal period), women are becoming evangelical about it, turning into vocal advocates, taking to social media to share their experience and telling all their friends and family.

game changer, sharing her positive birth story on her blog. And Louise Pentland, the UK’s number-one parenting vlogger and bestselling author, who used the approach for the birth of her second baby and went on to have a magical home birth. Having suffered from PTSD following the birth of her first baby, Louise found her second labour, using hypnobirthing, to be a hugely healing experience. She documented her experience with hypnobirthing on her popular YouTube channel and shared her birth video with her 2.6m subscribers. More recently, professional footballer and England Captain Harry Kane took to social media to share how proud he was of his wife who gave birth to their second daughter using hypnobirthing. And not forgetting, HRH Princess Catherine, who’s believed to have used hypnobirthing for the births of her children. The giveaway being when all of the midwives at the Lindo Wing (Kate’s birth place of choice) received training on the techniques ahead of Prince Louis being born. Whether it’s celebrities, influencers, royalty or real-life parents, each time hypnobirthing is mentioned more women are introduced to the approach. And then it only takes a quick google to discover that hypnobirthing is logical, evidence based and most importantly, effective. In fact the most common question I get asked when teaching classes is “why doesn’t everyone know this?”. Thankfully, it looks like soon everyone will.

Word of mouth is huge for hypnobirthing. What source could be more trusted for a mum-to-be than someone who has recently given birth herself and is telling you that her birth was amazing and that it was all down to hypnobirthing? And so word spreads. Of course it also helps when high profile women in the media and those with social influence, publicly endorse hypnobirthing. These women include Giovanna Fletcher who is a huge fan, and has shared her experience in both her book Happy Mum, Happy Baby and on her popular podcast. Then there’s Sarah Turner, aka the unmumsy mum and Sunday Times bestselling author, who used hypnobirthing for the birth of her third babyand found it to be a complete

HYPNO TIPS BREATHING Mastering a simple breathing technique for birth is so important. Try inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four seconds, feeling your chest expand before exhaling slowly through your mouth for a count of eight seconds, feeling all tension release throughout your body. Repeat four times and the surge (contraction) will have passed.

ENVIRONMENT Never underestimate the impact of the environment on your birth and the hormones you produce. Seek to create an ambience that’s conducive to birth. Use your five senses as a checklist and ensure each one is met with something that aids your relaxation. You may want to use battery operated tealights, a room spray or prepare a music playlist.

BIRTH PARTNER Having someone by your side and on your side in birth who can coach you through the surges, advocate for you when necessary and protect your space enables you to fully relax. Take some time to outline your birth preferences in advance and share them with your partner. Hypnobirthing can make a profound difference to the labour experience

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT Work on building positive associations with birth ahead of the big day. Do this by reading and watching positive birth stories, listening to affirmations and following positive birth photography accounts on social media. Using affirmations regularly has been proven to change the way your brain process information. By doing so, you’ll soon feel much more confident and excited for the birth!

You must avoid all exercises lying on your front after 12 weeks, avoid exercises on your back after 16 weeks. Kate Finney INVE STIGATE S TH E GROWING TR EN D ention ‘natural caesareans’ to most people, new mothers included, and they’ll look at you blankly and somewhat confused. But what may have seemed revolutionary only a decade ago, is now becoming a valid birth option for many mothers-to-be who are due to have their baby via caesarean section. Essentially, a natural caesarean comprises a series of measures that simulate a vaginal birth, allowing both the baby and the mother to experience a calmer, and less surgical, environment. “We also call it the ‘familycentred caesarean’ – putting the couple and their baby at the centre of the process,” says Dr Felicity Plaat, an anaesthetist who helped to pioneer the procedure. “We’ve probably been doing this for nearly 20 years, we published a paper about it in 2008,” says Jenny Smith, the midwife who worked alongside Dr Felicity Plaat. “Now, 10 years on, there’s a number of papers and quite a few hospitals in the UK practising it, as well as hospitals in the Netherlands, Germany and the USA. Two studies show quite clearly there’s no greater risk in having a natural caesarean, and that the process is very well received by the parents.” So what exactly does it entail? In a planned caesarean, it starts at the preparatory stage: the mother-to-be can choose her own music to play during the procedure, and can bring her own pillow and scented flannel in to the operating theatre. And in some hospitals, she may have already met her theatre team earlier

on, so will be surrounded by familiar faces. Once in theatre, she’ll be able to wear her gown so it opens to the side, which will allow the baby to be placed on her chest. Any drips and monitors will be inserted into her lessdominant hand, to ensure her preferred arm will be free to hold her newborn baby. After the incision has been made in her abdomen, the surgeon delivers the head of the baby, and encourages it to wriggle free – a process that

promotes better bonding and is linked to greater success rates for breastfeeding. The mother’s partner is also an active part of the procedure, remaining in theatre for the whole operation, and often cutting the cord. Many natural caesareans also feature delayed cord-clamping, which is widely embraced regardless of the mode of delivery. Dr Felicity Plaat herself underwent four caesareans, before natural caesareans were an

THERE’S A MORAL IMPERATIVE TO MAKE THAT EXPERIENCE AS FULFILLING AS POSSIBLE can take several minutes. “This process is beneficial for the baby too: as the mother’s abdomen muscle squeezes the baby it helps to expel the fluid from baby’s lungs,” says Dr Felicity Plaat. This is another example of the way in which natural caesareans have developed to simulate a vaginal birth, where the baby is squeezed through the birth canal. By this stage, the bed has been tilted up and the screen lowered so the mother can watch her baby being born, and in many cases she is the one to discover her baby’s gender. Instead of being whisked off to an examination table, the surgeon passes the baby to the midwife who then gives it immediately to the new mother for valuable skin-to-skin time which

option at all. “My first baby was breech. I could hear him crying, and he was whisked away and washed before I could get my hands on him. I remember cricking my neck trying to see him.” For expectant parents keen to incorporate some or all of the elements of a natural caesarean into their own birth experience, the advice is to discuss it with your midwife or birth team as soon as possible. The beauty of it is you can build in as many or as few parts as you like, or that are appropriate in your personal case. “The philosophical approach is radical,” concludes Dr Plaat. “I feel passionately about women who undergo caesareans – there’s a moral imperative to make that experience as fulfilling as possible.”

Natural caesareans promote better bonding and is linked to greater breastfeeding success rates

When I had Toby, my five year-old, they had to use forceps and I had a really bad tear. The labour itself was actually fine, but the aftermath was really hard. I was taken through to theatre and didn’t see my baby for another two hours. I felt awful for about six weeks afterwards. So, when I had Molly, two years later, I started researching and thought natural caesareans looked interesting. I live in Aberdeen, and some of my requests were quite extreme, so I had to email the head of midwifery and explain what I wanted. They were very agreeable to it and I had a great experience, the midwife even stroked my hand throughout! My gown was only on over one arm so I could peel it back to put the baby on my chest, and my husband was with me the whole time. My waters broke early so I didn’t get my music organised, but we had the screen down for the whole operation. I was quite keen to get her so there wasn’t much wriggling out. It was just a particularly special birth, so calm, quiet and respectful, and we had that lovely bonding I didn’t get the first time round. Recovery was much quicker too. Mine was only the second natural caesarean they’d performed in Aberdeen, but now they do skin-to-skin as standard and partners are allowed in theatre for the whole duration. I know one mother recently was allowed to squeeze her tummy during labour to help the baby out. After I’d had my natural caesarean I started talking to people about it and set up a Facebook group (search naturalcaesareanuk on Facebook) which has helped lots of mums get the c-sections they want.

With the right support and planning, a breech birth can be as safe as a regular birth

uring pregnancy, babies will twist and turn before moving into the headfirst position in time for labour. This allows for the birthing process to be more straightforward due to the head, the largest part of the baby, coming out first. However, this isn’t always the case, and on occasion, the baby won’t turn in time for the birth, which can result in a breech baby.

D

WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Breech refers to a baby that hasn’t turned and has remained in the bottom-first or feet first position after 36 weeks of pregnancy. A breech baby may be lying in one of the following positions: • Flexed breech – baby is bottom first with its feet right next to its bottom. The thighs are against its chest and knees are bent. • Frank or extended breech – baby is bottom first, but legs are extended upwards and feet are by its ears. This is the most common one. • A Footling breech – when one or both the baby’s feet are below its bottom.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY BABY’S IN A BREECH POSITION? Breech position before 35-36 weeks is common, but by 36-37 weeks of pregnancy most babies have turned naturally into the head-first position. Your doctor or midwife will be able to determine the position of your baby and if it’s breech by palpating your tummy. If baby is thought to be breech an ultrasound is usually used to confirm this.

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

WHAT CAUSES THIS? There’s no definite reason as to why some babies settle into the breech position. There are some factors, however, that may make it more difficult for baby to turn. These include: • If this is a first pregnancy. • If the mother is pregnant with multiples. • If the baby is born prematurely. • If there’s too much or too little amniotic

fluid in the uterus, leaving too much or too little room for the baby to move around. • If the mother has a low-lying placenta (known as placenta praevia) after 20 weeks.

(placenta praevia). • Recent vaginal bleeding. • Baby’s heart rate tracing is abnormal. • Mother is pregnant with more than one baby.

WHAT HAPPENS AT 36 WEEKS?

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS IN GIVING BIRTH TO A BREECH BABY?

Only about three to four per cent of babies are in the breech position at the end of pregnancy. However, if your baby is breech at 36 weeks, your healthcare professional will discuss your options with you: • Attempt to move baby into a head-first position by external cephalic version (ECV). • Planned caesarean section. • Planned vaginal breech delivery. ECV is usually performed after 36-37 weeks of pregnancy. This is a procedure in which an

Whilst vaginal deliveries are possible for a breech baby, it’s important that mothers discuss their individual risks with their health professional. There’s a 40 per cent chance of an emergency caesarean section with a breech delivery. Therefore, this type of delivery should take place in a hospital. Although the risks to the mother are low in this type of delivery, there’s a small increased risk of the baby dying on delivery due to complications.

ON OCCASION, THE BABY WON’T TURN IN TIME FOR THE BIRTH obstetrician will firmly move their hands over your abdomen to turn the baby into the headfirst position. The procedure itself only lasts a few minutes. It can be a bit uncomfortable but your doctor will stop if you find it painful. Before starting, an ultrasound is carried out to confirm baby is breech. Blood pressure and pulse is checked and mothers are administered a injection to relax the uterus prior to commencing. A cardiotocography (CTG) is used to measure the baby’s heart rate before and after the procedure, and an ultrasound will be carried out again afterwards to confirm whether baby has turned. An EVC is successful in about 50 per cent of women. If it isn’t effective, the obstetrician will discuss options for birth. It’s important to note that ECV shouldn’t be attempted if: • Caesarean section is needed for other reasons, such as a low-lying placenta

It’s best to avoid a breech delivery if: • Baby is a footling breech. • Baby is larger or smaller than average. • Baby is in an unusual position. • The placenta is low lying (placenta praevia). • Mother has pre-eclampsia or other pregnancy complications. It’s important to mention that with the right professional support and planning, a breech birth can be carried out as efficiently and safely as a regular birth. The choices for pain relief are the same as with a baby who’s in the head-first position and the midwife leading care should be able to discuss these options with the mother. During labour, it’s advised that baby’s heart rate is monitored, as this improves the chances of a good outcome. Whatever method is chosen, a calm atmosphere should be provided to ensure a positive birth experience.

The Breastfeeding Café with

PROFESSOR AMY BROWN

THIS ISSUE WE ASK:

ARE YOU IN PAIN?

I’VE BEEN EXPERIENCING SUDDEN WAVES OF NEGATIVITY. COULD IT BE DYSPHORIC MILK EJECTION REFLEX?

Y

ou’re not in pain, you have plenty of milk and your baby’s gaining weight. So why is something about breastfeeding making you feel just awful? Dysphoric milk ejection reflex (D-MER) is the feeling of strong negative emotions when your milk lets down. You may even feel them a few moments before you feel the milk let down (if you feel this – some women don’t). These feelings often come out of nowhere and disappear after a few minutes. You might feel sad, anxious, hopeless or angry. In severe cases, they can lead to suicidal thoughts. If you’re feeling miserable all the time you may have postnatal depression or anxiety, so support will take a different form. The feelings of D-MER are completely unrelated to how you feel about breastfeeding, although they might start making you dread your letdown. Usually these feelings only happen on the first letdown, or may be milder on subsequent letdowns. Sometimes you don’t feel them when pumping milk. The feelings can go away by around the three-month mark;

but they may last the entire time you’re breastfeeding. We don’t fully understand the cause as it’s so rare, but there’s a suggestion that it’s linked to the milk ejection reflex triggering a drop in dopamine, and some women seem to feel this more than others. Dopamine, in the right amounts, is associated with pleasure. However, too much or too little can lead to feelings of anxiety, paranoia and depression. Remember, this isn’t a psychological response to breastfeeding and you’re not in control of feeling this way. The feelings will last just a few moments, but it can be overwhelming when you know you’ll have those few moments several times a day. There are a number of ways to try to treat D-MER. Sometimes, just knowing that you’re not going mad, when it’ll happen and that it passes can help. If it’s having an impact on your wellbeing, medications that increase dopamine levels in your body may help. Speak to your doctor about it. These nursing issues could be the cause:

• If baby’s not approaching it effectively, their latch might be shallow. For example, if their chin isn’t close enough to your breast, or their upper body’s too far away. • If a shallow latch is damaging your nipple by squishing it between your baby’s tongue and roof of their mouth, or rubbing on the rear of their tongue. • Babies who are not latched on correctly will also suck harder because they’re not getting as much milk out. • A high, arched palate can mean the nipple becomes damaged, but this can often be reduced by changing the position. • Babies who have very small mouths may find it difficult to latch onto the breast. Chin position also matters. • Deeper pain may be caused by infection (for example thrush and mastitis). • Tongue-tie can also cause a baby to have a shallow latch, as they can’t latch on well.

TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT

THE ZIKA VIRUS

The sisters discuss the danger Zika presents to your unborn baby during pregnancy t can be a bit overwhelming, trying to understand all the things that are risky for your baby in pregnancy. Many of the things we hear have no evidence to support them, but it’s crucial that you’re not taking undue risks, which is why it’s important to know about the Zika virus. A few years ago, few people were familiar with the word Zika. Spread by daytime-active mosquitoes, it was named after the Ugandan forest in which it was first identified in the 1940s. For decades, no one really talked about it, as it was confined to a narrow area along the equator in Africa and Asia and appeared to pose no serious health risk. But a few years ago, it started spreading eastwards into the Americas and as more people became infected, it emerged that there was a correlation with various brain defects in the children of those who’d been infected. The danger of Zika is not so much for the person affected; symptoms are mostly mild and often not noticed at all. The real risk is in pregnancy; we now know that Zika can spread from a pregnant woman to her baby resulting in serious birth defects, most commonly a condition called microcephaly. As a result, the US Centre for Disease Prevention (CDC) issued travel notices in early 2016, warning pregnant women and couples trying to conceive that visiting Zika-affected areas would put unborn children at risk. But it’s not always as easy as travelling elsewhere, so here’s The Bump Class Guide to managing Zika in pregnancy...

PHOTOGRAPHY: HELENE SANDBERG

I

often have intellectual disability, poor motor function and speech, abnormal facial features and seizures. There’s no treatment for microcephaly and usually babies with the condition have reduced life expectancy as a result of poor brain function. What if I’ve booked a holiday to a Zikaaffected area and can’t get my deposit back? Don’t go – it’s just not worth it. Remember too that locals will often insist that their particular area isn’t affected. While they might be right, their assessment of the situation might well be influenced by the decline in the tourism and be incorrect. Ask your travel insurance provider if it covers cancellation fees. What if my partner has visited a Zikaaffected area while I’m pregnant? He needs to be tested. Because Zika can be

of the virus. If you’ve not had symptoms, then you can do a blood test two weeks after you get back. So, if you’re planning to travel to a Zika-affected country, and want to get pregnant afterwards, you can both have the test two weeks after your return. If they’re negative, you’re good to go, but if either one of you tests positive you should wait for six months before safely trying to conceive. If I’m pregnant and have Zika, what are the risks that our baby has microcephaly or another serious brain defect? We don’t know this yet. Because this epidemic is relatively new and pregnancy and neonatal outcomes take years to determine, there’s no accurate data on this yet. That said, the risk of Zika to unborn children is significant and you shouldn’t let anyone persuade you to disregard the advice of the CDC.

UNFORTUNATELY, THERE’S NO KNOWN ZIKA CURE OR VACCINE AVAILABLE YET passed from person to person through sex, before the results are back, you shouldn’t have sex without using condoms. If he cannot be tested, then he must continue to use protection for six months after his return.

Is there a cure or a vaccine to prevent it? Unfortunately, there’s no known Zika cure or vaccine available yet. However, the National Institute of Health in the US started a clinical trial of a Zika vaccine in August this year.

What should I do if I’ve been in a Zikaaffected area while pregnant? Your GP will recommend that you’re tested to see if you’re positive for Zika. This is done via a blood or urine test. If you test positive, obstetricians will keep a close eye on the development of your baby.

We’re trying to conceive but have just visited a Zika area. What should we do? The advice is for women to wait for eight weeks before trying. However, because Zika virus stays for longer in sperm, men need to wait for six months before trying. So if you’re a couple who have both travelled you both need to wait for six months, unless you get tested and are negative.

What are the affected areas? As this is often changing, it’s worth checking the CDC website before you travel (cdc.gov). Broadly travel notices (warning it’s unsafe for pregnant women or couples trying to conceive) have been issued in parts of central Africa, Central America, South America, Caribbean and some Pacific Islands.

What is microcephaly? It really is very serious. Babies born with microcephaly have smaller heads because the brain hasn’t developed normally. While they generally survive birth, these children

What about testing for Zika virus? There are tests for Zika virus. If you have symptoms you should do the tests while you’re ill, or within 14 days of getting ill. These are blood or urine tests that detect the DNA

Dispose by incineration’ marked on the front. It’s not normal behaviour for a mother of two young children, but for Emma it was something she had to do if she was ever to break free of OCD. She had suffered with low-level OCD throughout her 30s, but when she struggled to conceive and then became pregnant with her first child, it reached crisis point, “ruling every move and dominating every thought.” For Emma, needles were her biggest fear. “A fear I’d managed – or so I thought – to keep under control until I became pregnant, when I suddenly couldn’t walk down a street without looking for them, dreaded going to the doctors or hospitals” she explains. And for Emma it didn’t end there, “something as simple as preparing my baby’s bottle left me in a cold sweat, I cleaned everything over and over and my hands were raw from incessant washing. It was no longer just about needles – germs, strangers, salt, eggs, cleaning products and cars too.” She goes on to tell me how she routinely made her son’s meals three or four times, throwing each one away for fear she’d done something to contaminate it. Emma’s experience may sound extreme, but it’s not uncommon. The Royal College of Psychiatrists estimates that around one per

cent of the population have OCD at any one time, but in the year after giving birth, two to three per cent of mothers are affected. Dr Sarah Healy, a clinical psychologist who specialises in treating both men and women in the perinatal period, says the increase in OCD at this time is understandable. “There’s a huge sense of responsibility that comes with being a parent, and it’s very normal to find yourself worrying about the wellbeing and safety of your baby. Some people become overwhelmed by these terrifying thoughts and will do anything to keep their baby safe.” Sarah says mothers with OCD often fear they’re going to drop their baby down the stairs, burn them in the bath, smother them with a pillow or poison them. Thoughts and images which are, by their very nature, extremely distressing. “People with OCD don’t become violent or act on these thoughts,” Sarah explains, “they retreat and avoid the situations they fear will trigger them.” Avoidance is something Emma knows only too well. “I avoided public toilets, the tube, subways, parks, the cleaning product aisle at the supermarket, motorways, restaurants and even hotels. I soon became too scared to even go out at night.” For Emma it was a daily battle to keep going. “I’m not really sure how I did it; I certainly didn’t make things easy for myself, but I kept going because I didn’t really have a choice. My son needed me and I needed to be the best mother I could possibly be,” she says. “I’d achieved everything I’d ever wanted – a great career, a loving husband and a longed-for, healthy child. Life was good, but I was terrified it would slip through my fingers.” Like most mental health issues and especially those which occur before, during or after child-birth, there’s a massive stigma attached to OCD. In Sarah’s experience, “lots of women feel ashamed, they think they shouldn’t feel like this,” she explains. “That was the worst thing,” says Emma, “not being able to talk about what was going on in my head. Deep down I knew the thoughts were irrational, but when a voice keeps telling you you’ve put bleach in your baby’s milk, you start to believe it.”

Happiness coach, Olivia Horne, who herself suffered from mental health issues following the birth of her first child, believes, sadly much of this stigma seems to be between women. “We’re exhausting ourselves trying to show the perfect picture of motherhood to the world.” Olivia, does however, believe things are changing, “we’re getting better at asking for help and showing support and solidarity, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.” Sarah agrees. “More people are opening up about their difficulties and I hope that with celebrities, such as Adele, speaking frankly about their struggles, this trend will continue.” Thankfully, the government has also started to listen. In November 2017, it was announced that NHS England would spend £40m on specialist mental health workers in a bid to help 30,000 more women by 2021. The funding meant that Sarah could finally help Emma overcome her OCD. “Sarah used cognitive behavioural therapy to help me help myself. By talking about my issues and helping me to face my fears, she gave me a way out of this vicious cycle of anxiety. I learned that stress and tiredness were a big trigger for my OCD and in doing so, felt much more able to cope. To say that she changed my life would be an understatement.” Sadly, Emma is one of the luckier ones. The National Childbirth Trust says that whilst the new funding is welcome, there’s still a very long way to go to help the 140,000 mothers each year who suffer mental health issues in the perinatal period. Until then, the advice is to keep talking, start listening and stop comparing. IF YOU’RE WORRIED ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE YOU SHOULD: • Speak to your GP or midwife • Self-refer at your local IAPT service • Recommended self-help book: Break Free from OCD, £8.33 by Dr Fiona Challacombe, Dr Victoria Bream Oldfield and Paul M Salkovskis (Amazon) • Find a support group: PANDAS Foundation UK, OCD Action, OCDUK, pandasfoundation.org.uk, ocdaction.org.uk, ocduk.org

FOOD

uring the first year, your baby will go through so many exciting developmental milestones, and weaning her onto solids is one of the most important stages. By as early as four months (although the NHS-recommended weaning age is currently six months old), your little one will start to give tell-tale clues that she’s ready for solids. These include physical signs such as fist chewing, curiosity when seeing others eat, wanting extra milk feeds and waking in the night. At this age, her digestive system should also be ready to handle solids and her immune system will be stronger, meaning she’s at a lower risk of developing any food allergies. For many first-time mums, weaning a child onto solids can be a daunting prospect; just as you’ve got into the swing of supplying your baby with milk, you’ve got an even bigger challenge on your hands. There are many different ways to tackle weaning, and one of the biggest parenting debates is whether you should spoon-feed your baby with puréed food or let her guide you towards her personal

D

What’s great is that you shouldn’t have to choose between one method or another – instead, try incorporating both types of weaning. By combining spoon-fed purées with finger foods, you can be sure she’s ingesting enough food, while still giving her the independence to experience different textures and shapes herself. “And in the case of both methods, you should offer the same food a few days apart, so you can check whether she has any allergies or intolerances,” advises Shauna. Foster your baby’s curiosity by letting her feel and taste different textures and shapes, such as small chunks of ripe banana, softlycooked carrot matchsticks and pieces of avocado. Don’t worry if she spits food out initially; her tastebuds just need time to adapt. Bear in mind that the most important part of any weaning diet is to make sure that your baby is receiving enough nutrients from food, because milk alone will no longer sustain her nutritional needs. Iron in particular is an essential mineral for your child’s growth and development. Infants

FOSTER YOUR BABY’S CURIOSITY BY LETTING HER FEEL AND TASTE DIFFERENT TEXTURES AND SHAPES tastes and preferences – an approach known as baby-led weaning (BLW). According to research, these days a growing number of mums are choosing to allow their infant to self-feed. “There is evidence that BLW babies are more accepting of different flavours and textures, so there’s less risk of having a picky eater,” says Shauna Blair, founder of healthy infant-food brand Heavenly Tasty Organics (heavenlytasty. com). “Plus, baby-led weaned babies tend to stop eating when they’re full, so they teach themselves to self-regulate.” As babies have to pick up their food to bring it to their mouths, this also helps them develop their hand-eye-coordination skills. However, that’s not to say that you should forgo giving your baby puréed food completely – there are many advantages to taking the spoon-fed approach. “You’ll know exactly how much your child has eaten and which nutrients and vitamins you’re giving her,” adds Shauna. “By feeding her yourself, you can see she’s actually eating the food rather than playing with it.”

are usually born with an adequate supply to last them the first six months, but once these reserves are used up, she’ll need to receive iron through food sources like red meat, green beans and lentils. Other necessary vitamins and minerals can obtained from all major food groups. Calcium, for instance, is found in dairy products and helps to build healthy teeth and bones, while wholegrains, found in brown rice and wholemeal bread, protect her heart and nervous system. Vitamin C, on the other hand, which is found in butternut squash and carrots, keeps her immune system healthy. “Weaning is usually a messy experience as they explore different textures and flavours with their mouths and hands,” warns Shauna. “But, if anything, you should just try to go with the flow.” This is the time to get creative in the kitchen – grab yourself a weaning cookbook and experiment with new flavours to help stimulate her senses. Think brightly-coloured foods, fun shapes and different textures to help her explore this new culinary world.

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 200g pumpkin or butternut squash, peeled and chopped • 200g sweet potato, peeled and chopped • 100g carrots, peeled and chopped • 1 garlic clove • 1 tsp dried basil • 40g quinoa • 20g frozen peas • 50g tinned cannellini beans • 40g cheddar cheese METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and scatter with the pumpkin, sweet potato and carrot and garlic. Drizzle the olive oil and dried basil over them, and mix with your hands to ensure all the vegetables are coated. Place the tray in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden and soft. While the vegetables are roasting, cook the quinoa according to the packet instructions. In another pan, cook the peas for 5-7 minutes until soft. Drain, reserving the cooking water. Once the vegetables are ready, allow them to cool before blending with the cooked peas, beans and cheese until the desired consistency is achieved. Add a little of the peas’ cooking water for a looser consistency. Serve with the cooked quinoa.

This warming stew is delicious whether whipped up in 90 minutes or left to slow cook for hours

MEDITERR ANEAN BEEF STEW Preparation: 25 minutes Cooking: 1hr 30 minutes Suitable from 6 months (with low-salt stock)

Nothing beats a good stew on a cold evening. This cooks beautifully in a slow cooker, so it’s a great one to fling together in the morning before coming back to delicious smells in the evening. However, it’s also just as good cooked on the hob for an hour. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t waste your money on an expensive cut of beef for this stew. INGREDIENTS

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 500g lean stewing beef, diced • 1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 celery stick, finely chopped • ½ tsp ground cumin • ½ tsp ground cinnamon • 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 400ml vegetable stock (or 200ml stock, 200ml red wine) • 1 bay leaf • 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary

104 | baby-magazine.co.uk

• 4-5 carrots, peeled and diced • 1 sweet potato, peeled and chopped • 100g baby potatoes, chopped into quarters • 200g frozen broad beans, thawed • 50g green olives, stoned and chopped METHOD

Heat the olive oil in a large flameproof casserole dish over a moderate heat. Add the beef and brown evenly, in batches. Remove the beef from the dish and then add the onions, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes until translucent. Stir in the garlic and celery with the ground spices. Pour in the tomatoes, tomato purée, stock and if you’re using it, red wine, before bringing it to the boil. Add the bay leaf and fresh herbs, reduce the heat, cover the casserole and leave to simmer gently for 45 minutes. Alternatively, once the beef and onions are browned, you can put everything into a slow cooker and set it to auto and cook for 4-8 hours. Stir the potatoes into the casserole and continue to simmer for a further 30 minutes, covered, until the meat and potatoes are tender. Add the beans and olives and cook for a final 5 minutes to heat through. Season the dish to taste.

FOOD

LEEK & ONION VEGGIE ROLLS Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking: 30 minutes Makes: 16 small sausage rolls Suitable from 7 months (without the salt and fennel seeds) INGREDIENTS

• 150g 1 day-old bread, torn into pieces • 10g butter, for frying • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 medium leeks thinly sliced • 4 sage leaves, finely chopped • 2 tsp dried thyme • 3 free-range eggs, 1 beaten for egg wash • 120g Grana Padano or Parmesan, grated • 100g cheddar cheese, grated • 500g pack all-butter puff pastry • 1 tsp plain flour for dusting • 50g dried apricots, chopped • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp fennel seeds

PHOTOGRAPHY: XXXXXXXXX

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Blitz the bread in a food processor until you have fine breadcrumbs. Transfer to a mixing bowl. Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onions and leeks

and gently fry for around 8 minutes until translucent. Add the sage and thyme and fry for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat, add to the breadcrumbs and season with salt and pepper (no salt if giving to a baby under one year). In a separate bowl, whisk together two eggs, add the cheeses. Add it to the breadcrumb mixture and mix well, adding the apricots. Using your hands, form the mixture into two even-sized balls. Roll these balls between your palms into two 30cm or 12in-long sausages. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface until you have a 30x30cm or 12x12in square. Cut the square in half lengthways to form two rectangles. Lay one of the sausages down each rectangle. Take the first rectangle and fold one side up over the filling. Brush beaten egg down the other edge and fold it over the top and press lightly to seal the join. Repeat with the second rectangle of pastry. Turn the two long sausage rolls seam-sidedown. Brush the rolls with beaten egg and sprinkle over the fennel seeds. Using a sharp knife, cut each length of pastry into eight even-sized sausage rolls. Make two small slits in the top of each one, taking care not to cut right through. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden-brown and cooked through.

hen you’re young and free, having parents tagging along on holidays is usually the last thing you would want. Throw babies and toddlers into the mix, however, and grandparents are sure to top anyone’s list of travel companions. The obvious benefits are shared childcare duties, moral support and sharing the domestic load, but the rise is 3G travel isn’t just about functional needs. For some, grandparent-day-care creates an uncomfortably business-like relationship with parents, and holidaying together is a novel way to readdress the balance. For those whose parents aren’t involved on a regular basis, a week-long stint helps to form a family bond that a few hours here or there never can. Planning a multi-gen trip can also be a bit of a balancing act. You need to find something that appeals to everyone, but each person should be willing to make a few compromises, too. BUSINESS

The brand’s pram mobiles include a removable teething rattle in the centre

INSPIRE What inspired Nibbling? When I left my job as a fashion designer, I knew I’d need to find an outlet for my creativity. That said, I didn’t want to rush into a job without being sure I could balance time with my children. Then in 2013, I met a mum who was wearing a string of silicone beads that were designed to be chewed by her baby. This inspired me to set up an online shop for teething jewellery, which was a pretty new concept at the time. What is a typical day for you? I have three young children who all go to different schools and nurseries, so I start my mornings getting them ready. My youngest is now at nursery five mornings a week, which gives me time to go through my emails and accounts, then I try to work on new designs when I’m not so bogged down with admin. I finish at 3pm for the school run, after which we have friends over or the kids take part in activities. I work for a few more hours once they’ve gone to bed. What inspires your ideas? I try to create classic designs

EMILY SUNDERLAND We chat to the founder of teething accessory brand Nibbling and mum-ofthree about setting up a baby business that have longevity and will complement an outfit, and I also listen to my retailers about what they think their customers want. Recently, a request for solid colours and same-shaped beads inspired our new Rio necklaces and Pluto Dummy Clips. Because of my fashion background, I like to keep an eye on upcoming trends, too – marble and natural materials like beech wood are especially popular at the moment. Balancing work life with family time is Emily’s top priority

What are the brand’s values? It’s important to me that our products are safe, practical and stylish. But I also love that they’re multifunctional; for example, our teething necklace is both a fashion accessory and can be chewed and held by babies. Our pram mobiles are unique, too, as they have a detachable teething rattle in the centre. What has made you most proud? It’s always nice to reflect on what you’ve achieved, as sometimes when you’re working really hard, you only see what needs improving. It was brilliant to launch an ambassador programme this summer, in which I sent out a pack of products to 25 mums for

reviews, and they sent me some beautiful photos and wonderful feedback. I’m also proud that we’re now selling Nibbling’s products in 20 different countries, and that I’ve won several awards for my designs. What advice do you have for budding designers? Make sure you’re creating something you love and care about – it will help you stay committed in the long run. I’ve worked thousands of unpaid hours, but that’s just how startups are formed and how they end being successful. Be sure to find time to switch off at the end of the day, too. What’s up next? We’re expanding into further European markets and China, which is very exciting. We’ve spent a lot of time this year testing products, and we currently have a crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube to support our expansion. There’s also few interior items launching this year.
