Felt storage box £29, mokee.eu
By the end of October, my brain was already filling up with prospective New Year’s resolutions. Of course, all the necessities are in the mix: eat less, work out more, do more for the environment… but taking centre stage this January (and with any luck, the months that follow) is focusing time and energy on what makes me happy. And this couldn’t be more pertinent for motherhood. Georgina Blaskey talks mastering the art of self-care on page 76, with quick me-time fixes for time-starved, stressed-out mums. If you can’t put your finger on how to do it differently in 2019 , Sarah Dawson has done the legwork for you with 10 resolutions, from booking yourself on to a first-aid course, to capturing memories of your beautiful baby. Check it out on page 66 for all the inspiration you could need. One thing that post-Christmas homes across the country is sure to need this month is some stylish storage solutions. Ali Howard’s roundup of design-led pieces makes tidying up after your tot a doddle – find your nurseryneatening fix on page 96. Speaking of clutter, when you become a parent you seem to accumulate a whole host of paraphernalia

Where were you born? Tunbridge Wells. Any New Year’s resolutions? Yes! I’d like to become one of those organised mums, out and about with the kids in all weathers, and always armed with a flask of hot chocolate. Three words to describe motherhood. Exhausting, rewarding, joyful. Ali’s clearing up the nursery clutter in her interiors round-up on p.96

Where were you born? Leicester Royal infirmary, Leicester. Funniest parenting moment? On Esmé’s first flight, I sat her on my lap to watch as the plane landed, when my legs suddenly felt very warm. Where were you born? Freedom Fields Hospital, Plymouth. Any New Year’s resolutions? In true mum fashion, I vow to carve out a little time for myself, in the shape of two weekly solo swims and one hour of reading before bed (which also requires the willpower to turn the TV off). IT’S TIME FOR A FIRST VISIT TO THE DENTIST! Parenting is fascinating and joyful, but it can also be a challenge. Let’s face it – babies don’t come with an instruction manual. You’re likely taking on loads of welcome advice from family, friends and health visitors, but don’t forget your friendly dentist. Your baby may not have any teeth yet, but as soon as those milk teeth start poking through, it’s game on. Even though they’re temporary, healthy baby teeth are crucial to your child’s early development – not just in helping your growing child get the right nutrition through chewing, but also for speech and jaw development, which in turn affects the correct formation of facial features. Baby teeth are vulnerable to tooth decay from their very first appearance, on average
between ages 6 to 12 months. The associative pain of tooth decay can prevent a child from eating correctly, impacting overall health and development. The Journal of Pediatric Dentistry states that children who wait to have their first dental visit until age 2 to 3 are more likely to require restorative and emergency visits. Paediatric dentists can detect early tooth decay and provide parents with information on proper oral and facial development, determine fluoride needs and other preventive measures. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and British Dental Association recommend bringing your baby to the dentist before the age of one because it gives us a chance to check for any underlying problems and confirm their dental development is healthy. Even better, choosing a paediatric dentist like Happy Kids Dental pays dividends when it comes to creating
positive experiences of the dentist and getting children on board with dental visits. Kitted out with amazing play areas and state-ofthe-art technology, the practice has handpicked its team for its skill, experience and amazing rapport with children. They’ll take all the time your baby or child needs to feel relaxed in their care, offering tailored tips, techniques and products to help give children the best possible start in life. So, if your baby’s first teeth are poking through – or if they’re about to turn one – you know what you need to do. Bring them for their first fantastic visit to Happy Kids Dental, and make sure that cute, toothy grin develops into a healthy smile for life.
Remember, it’s never too early for your baby’s first dental visit – just don’t let it be too late!

Family time before Kit’s arrival in April
Zoe and Georgia enjoy storytime with Luna and Axel
MY ESSENTIALS
You run your own parenting platform Made By Mammas. What’s the story behind it? I was pregnant and had recently moved from London to Cheltenham as my husband [rugby player Paul Doran Jones] had signed to Gloucester. One day, I was sitting in a coffee shop when I noticed that the pretty blonde on the table next to me had a bump. We got talking and hit it off from the start. We spent a lot of time together, and she was really there for me that year after I had Luna [now aged two]. We found that when we searched online for advice, all this scary information would come back. It got us thinking; what if there was a hub for mums across the globe to come to for non-judgemental support, tips and expert advice? So we started Made by Mammas – it’s now a website, podcast and Instagram account. You cover all sorts topics on the site – is it important to you to
ZOE HARDMAN
The TV presenter, radio DJ and mum of two talks blogging, birth stories and the magic of storytelling be honest and open about all aspects of motherhood? Absolutely. With things like labour, some people don’t want to hear the bad stories, but personally, I wanted to know what was going to happen to me. Every birth’s different, but often people just want to tell you the
good, which means if you then go through a really bad birthing experience, you’re not prepared. My parents always taught me that knowledge is power and if you can come away with an awareness of what could happen then you can make the right choice for you. That’s what we do with Made By Mammas; we’re by no means Zoe’s second telling people how to do pregnancy wasn’t things, we just want to show plain sailing what works for us.
Faux shearling jacket £38, riverisland.com
Do you think social media is a good community, or does it just fuel comparison? I think it’s an amazing community – if you’ve just had a new baby and you’re up in the middle of the night, you can open Instagram and get some really amazing bits of advice and wisdom. We’re really lucky – our followers are amazing and supportive, so we don’t tend to see any negativity. Made By Mammas has teamed up with Moonlite to promote the importance of reading with your children. Tell us more. Georgia and I are avid readers and really believe in the magic of storytelling, so the Moonlite device has become a firm favourite. Every single night Luna and Axel [Georgia’s son, two] get a story from it; you clip the device onto your phone and it projects these beautiful illustrations onto the ceiling as you read – it feels like a fairy tale! At the moment we’ve got four or five different

Luna, Kit and stepdaughter Isla are Zoe’s number-one priorities now
Second child Kit has made the family’s bond even stronger
stories on repeat. It’s great for when you’re travelling with kids, too. Has parenthood been everything you hoped it’d be? It’s the most mind-blowingly fantastic experience of my life. It’s had much bigger highs and much bigger lows than I’d expected. Nothing can prepare you for parenthood, but it’s been the making of me – my number-one priorities are my two children and step-daughter, Isla. I don’t care if I achieve nothing else in life – it’s all for them. You welcomed your son, Kit, in April – did you enjoy your second pregnancy? This time was different – I sailed through the first pregnancy, but this time I had a few more ailments. I understood how lucky I was having another baby, but I didn’t love being pregnant – you can’t control what’s happening to your body, but I knew what was

coming at the end of it so I was really excited. What’s the best thing about being a mum? Watching the kids interact with each other. I was so worried before having Kit that I was breaking the bond between Luna and I, but actually, he’s been the glue. Luna’s obsessed with him – every morning she gets in his cot and they cuddle and kiss and it’s so beautiful to watch. What’s your pram of choice? The Bugaboo Donkey2 Duo buggy Zoe met her Made by Mammas partner Georgia Dayton when she moved to Cheltenham
– I’ve got it in black with grey rims. It’s the dream – it’s like the Ferrari of the pram world! You can transform it from a two-seater into a one-seat with a side basket. Where do you like to shop for Kit & Luna? I love Baby Mori for clothes and Aden + Anais for beautiful muslins. The Entertainer’s great, as is River Island’s RI Baby range. How do you go about achieving a work-life balance? I’m a bit of a work horse – it’s something I love doing. I try to find as many hours in the day as
possible; my husband and I split the day, so some days I’ll take them in the morning and he’ll work and then we’ll switch over. When they’ve gone to bed I’ll blog or work on the Made By Mammas Instagram page. What do you do for date night? We don’t get the opportunity to go out lots, so after we get the kids in bed we have this ridiculous date-night-in-the-bedroom routine– we’ll get a takeaway and a bottle of wine, light some candles and just talk. We also love going to the cinema, and dinner with friends is really important. What does 2019 have in store? Georgia and I are working on a book, which we’re really excited about. We’re recording series two of our podcast at the moment but want to get series three out next year. And a family holiday – I grew up in Kenya so I’d love to take them there.

Hop suit, £185, dinoskiwear.com I love nothing more than dressing my children up as little animals and I’ve fallen in love with these Dinoski onesies. You can pick your favourite character from options that include Spike the dinosaur, Cub the lion or Hop the bunny. I always stock up on skiwear early and I know my little one’s going to be living in this, whether skiing on the slopes or out on a long walk.

WHERE TO GO
I’m excited to try mother and baby yoga at The Cotswold Clubhouse and am looking forward to joining my first Tarka London class. Run by in-demand military duo, Tom and Rufus, the 40-minute class for 18 to 36 month olds uses music and bright colours to engage with the children as they work on motor skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance, coordination and teamwork. For any parent who has trouble getting their child to sleep, this class is meant to be a godsend. tarkalondon.com
t’s officially New Year, and that means one thing: resolutions! It’s a time when I like to reflect on the past year and plan how I want to live the next. My intentions are always the best, but come June I’ll find that I’ve ticked just one thing off the list. My best friend sent my daughter a card last week, saying to remember we’re lucky to have the gift of choice, something that not everyone has. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in daily life, but we mustn’t forget how fortunate we are. And with that spirit in mind, I’m taking up the piano: yes at 37! And I’m going to learn a bit of Italian with my daughter, touch-typing with my eldest and music with my little one. It’s 2019 and I’m jumping in with both feet!

INTERVIEW
t’s fair to say we all want our children to grow up displaying the best qualities we possess as parents, but in the case of Serena Williams, it’s clear from the outset that she’ll probably choose a gentler career path for daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. It’s not that that the 23-time Grand Slam champion doesn’t want her firstborn – with entrepreneur husband Alexis Ohanian – to taste the plaudits, satisfaction and trappings that are the rewards for dedication well beyond what most mere mortals can imagine. More, after almost two decades at the very top of her profession, Williams, in her own words, wants “a life for my daughter that’s a little less crazy!”. Williams has certainly fallen in love with motherhood straight away. Where her Instagram account – with its 10m followers – was once a bruising collection of tournament photos and training advice, it’s now a journal filled with the early flurries of family life. All told, it shows a much gentler, softer side to arguably the most driven and unrelenting of professional sportswomen. “I did think for a long time about what motherhood would entail – I did wonder what it would be like,” she says. “And it’s true, until you’re actually a mom there’s no way of coming to terms with the range of feelings and emotions that fill what is a truly special time,” she says. “I wouldn’t change anything. It’s been the most incredible year of my life – everything I could have dreamed of – and now I have so many more to look forward to with Alexis.” The way Williams has moved effortlessly into her new role is all the more impressive given the media attention that has followed her along the way. Of course, it’s something she has become accustomed to. Even so, no sooner had she and baby settled in at her new multimillion-pound Beverly Hills home, were pundits speculating on when the former world number one might return to tennis. “I’ve always done things on my terms and

I KNEW THE PRIORITY WAS SPENDING TIME WITH MY DAUGHTER. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANYTHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT
around my own schedule,” she says, “and I knew the priority was spending time with my daughter. There has never been anything more important than that.” When she did return to action – less than four months after giving birth on 1 September, 2017 – the tennis ace soon rediscovered her competitive spirit. Indeed, she made it to two Grand Slam finals in her first year back, coming off second best to Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon, before losing a prickly US Open showdown with Naomi Osaka in September. Although Williams was disappointed not to add another title to a list that boasts six Wimbledon final victories, you sense her relief at being back on court is enough, for now. “My beautiful daughter is now my numberone priority, but I still have a job to do, and that’s tennis, and I’ve always taken so much satisfaction from the sport. I don’t apologise for picking up my racket again so quickly – it’s who I am, and I want to teach my daughter that, in life, you have to follow what you believe in. As I said at the time, if I felt ready to go back and I wanted to go back, then surely I should go back.” In terms of regaining the physical prowess she has become renowned for, Williams admits the transition back to fully functioning
sportswoman wasn’t as difficult as she had feared. “The truth is I’ve always focused on fitness and health, so it only ever felt like I getting back to what was natural – it wasn’t a big move in the sense that I wasn’t trying to do something I hadn’t previously done. My natural state is as an athlete so I was going that way whatever. “Did I let things slip when I was pregnant? Not too much. I mean, sugar is basically the devil even though it’s so good. I love sugar, unfortunately, but I know it’s not good for you! And there were a few days when I allowed myself a treat, especially with carbs, which I always swear by for energy and brain function. But at no point would I say I went crazy on food during pregnancy. “I still have a little way to go as well. People are saying I look like I’m back to where I was, but to look good is one thing – you have to feel good too.” Few would doubt Serena Williams can get back to level she was operating at before. Not only a generational icon for female and black empowerment, she now flies the flag for motherhood as well. Who knows, perhaps she may even conquer new heights? After all, she’ll have the most loyal of supporters cheering her on from the sidelines.

“
nd that’s why it’s really not worth driving all the way there if you’re buying more than three pieces of....” I’m mid-sentence when it dawns on me that I’m yabbering on to a friend about the benefits of buying in store at Ikea versus online. My personal roulette wheel of conversation can throw up anything from a thrilling anecdote about when all the fridges broke down at Sainsbury’s to the time I ended up going to the post office depot three times in one day. It’s a wild ride. I’m sure, at one point, I was sort of quite good at this chat lark. It was part of my job as a beauty editor. I took great pleasure in it. I carried with me a vague awareness of the political state of the world. I had actual views on things. I made mid-conversation gags that mostly paid off. And yet, four months into babyland and I have reached brain rot. Now, the banal, errand-y stuff that populates my day is all I have. I’ve become needlessly invested in the consumer policies of key retailers, the rudeness of strangers who don’t say thank you when I give way to them on the pavement, and the successes and failures of various attempts at

WITH BABY NOAH TAKING CENTR E STAGE, Joanna Ellner IS LE AR NING TO PUT TO -DO LISTS ON TH E BACK BU R N ER stain removal (“it says don’t leave it overnight, but…”). Small things in the grand scheme? Yes. But in the past four months, they’ve become disproportionately large
in my head. It doesn’t take a shrink to realise my brain is grasping around for the familiar – oddly comforting – feeling of having stuff to fixate on. I’m so conditioned by the daily stresses of work, a system in which I’ve participated since collecting glasses in the local pub aged 15, my brain’s searching for work stressors to ruminate on. Finding none, it inflates each tiny irritancy to the size of a blimp. The blueprint of working life has also left me with the innate drive to Get Things Done. For twenty-odd years, I’ve validated my day – and well, myself – on
the basis of how many emails I’ve sent, how many ticks I’ve etched on to my to-do list. Trying to maintain this level of activity with a baby who is blasé about sleep is a futile pursuit. I realise that now, along with other certainties that I’d like to share: 1. Every time you open your laptop to tackle that nonurgent but persistent bit of life admin, your baby will wake up. 2. You’ll settle her to sleep and open it again and again, three or four times before giving up. 3. You’ll find a gargantuan sense of achievement in the mundane. The completion of a big white load of washing; that is, one
which is washed, dried, folded AND put away, will feel akin to winning the Pulitzer Prize. 4. You’ll note this satisfaction and question your sanity. 5. You’ve never felt a greater desire to sort out your knicker drawer or bank statements. You realise this won’t happen until your child’s in school. I thought maternity leave would be one long soft-focus film of me holding our baby in my arms, with not very much to do at all, other than bask in the autumn sun. It is that. Sometimes. But mostly, it’s trying to empty the dishwasher and reload it on the same day.

ith the arrival of our daughter Esme in May, we needed a pushchair that could accommodate both her and her older brother. We often use public transport when out and about in London, so decided to steer clear of side-by-side models, instead investing in the ultimate tandem buggy; the new iCandy Peach Double.
The iCandy Peach Double attracts many admiring glances when Sophie and family take it out for a spin
GOOD LOOKING The new Peach is even more luxurious than its predecessors, attracting many admiring looks every time we use it. You can customise your pram, choosing your favourite chassis and fabric combination. We chose the Chrome Beluga colourway; a muted, neutral palette that coordinates with any changing bag, footmuff or other accessory. The overall look of the buggy is high-end, sleek and very stylish.
Otis enjoyi ng one of his two-hou the iCand r naps in y Peach D ouble
PRACTICALITY AND DRIVEABILITY My only small niggle is it’s rather time consuming to set up initially. However; it’s worth the effort. With its lightweight aluminium frame and wide wheel base, the Peach Double is very easy to manoeuvre. The tyres and suspension handle country walks with ease and the ample shopping basket makes the transition from city park to high street seamless. The seat and carrycot need to be removed before folding, but the process is still relatively quick and easy. The chassis is freestanding when folded, which takes up less room than
it would if it had to be laid down. However; if you live in a particularly bijou flat this may not be the double buggy for you as it takes up quite a bit of room, with storage space needed for the Peach chassis, seat and substantial carrycot.
COMFORT The lightweight frame is easy to manoeuvre on city and countryside terrains
Our two-year-old son takes his two-hour naps in the seat; testament to how spacious and comfy it is! It’s cushioned so there’s no need for a seat liner. The seat has a huge hood which effectively shields Otis from whatever the British weather throws at us. There’s also a handy zipped pocket on the hood, perfect for essentials such as tissues, and dummies.
This double pushchair looks high-end, sleek and very stylish
The carrycot’s also larger than older models and lined with a super-soft, quilted fabric. With previous versions of the Peach you had to buy a smaller carrycot to use the buggy in double mode but this isn’t necessary with the Peach 4, you can use the original carrycot.
THE VERDICT The Peach is a dream to use, offering a smooth, comfortable ride for both baby and toddler. It’s a robust yet beautiful tandem buggy that combines cutting-edge design with functionality; it’s clear to see why the Peach 4 is at the top end of the market. It’s an investment you’ll be glad you made. Prices from £1,245, icandyworld.com

Eufy SpaceView Monitor
Baby monitors can soon become a parent’s best friend, but this new release from tech brand Eufy has totally raised the bar. The first in-home HD baby monitor, the five-inch screen is 85 per cent bigger than most displays on the market. It comes with a wide-angle lens attachment, so you can see a large proportion of the room, easily extending the product’s lifespan to the toddler stage. You can pan and tilt the lens to see corner to corner and floor to ceiling. It also has a 24-hour battery life, and 460ft range! £149.99, eufylife.com/uk

4moms 2.1 Highchair High-tech brand 4moms seeks out problematic areas in product design, resulting in some pretty nifty pieces of kit. For many parents the big thing when purchasing a high chair is how easy it is to clean, as sophisticated mealtimes are a long way off yet. This product’s main innovation is the tray. Clever magnets guide the tray into place for a one-handed tray attachment, while the magnetic tray top keeps 4moms’ range of magnetic bowls and plates in place, stopping messy mishaps in their tracks. Once done, the top tray can popped in the top rack of the dishwasher. Clean, clever and cool! £324.99, johnlewis.com
PARENTING
From monitoring and feeding to playtime and park strolls, there’s now a vast array of ingenious baby products on the market
Elvie Pump
Breastfeeding mothers rejoice! Female tech and health brand Elvie has just launched the world’s first-ever silent wearable breast pump, designed to be worn inside a standard nursing bra. Hassle- and hands-free, this lightweight tool can be connected to the free Elvie pump app, allowing you to monitor milk volume in real time, control the pump remotely and track pumping history for each breast. From £229, elvie.com
Skip Hop Silver Lining Cloud Activity Centre
Finding something that baby loves to play with and which doesn’t look unsightly in your home is some feat! This activity centre is an action-packed take on Skip Hop’s bestselling gym. Suitable from four months, and cleverly designed to grow with baby in three stages, little ones can play for hours in this gym. The colour palette is easy on the eyes, while the tasteful pops of colour stimulate baby’s sight. As baby grows, it converts for easy cruising, then lastly at stage three, it transforms into a sturdy toddler table with a plastic chalkboard surface for drawing. £135, johnlewis.com
Nanobébé Breastmilk Bottle
Nanobébé’s patented design improves the entire process of bottle-feeding breast milk. From pumping to storing and warming to feeding, it preserves your milk’s nutritional value. But how? Bacteria in food multiplies quicker when stored at room temperature, so cooling breast milk as quickly as possible is beneficial, meaning that the immunological properties inside go towards baby’s nutrition rather than fighting bacterial growth. As a result of its design, breast milk is spread into a thin layer that cools twice as fast as standard bottles. You can also warm milk at safe temperatures and feed baby promptly without destroying precious nutrients by overheating. You can even pump directly into a Nanobébé bottle using the included adaptor. Plus, its dome shape also makes it ideal for tiny hands. The only downside is that it isn’t readily available in the UK yet, although it can be bought on Amazon and iHerb. $22.99, nanobebe.com
Didofy Lotus
Set to launch in January 2019, the Didofy Lotus is nothing short of brilliant. Using the latest technology, this three-in-one travel system is set to revolutionise the market. The pushchair folds at the touch of a button and self-charges from seven-and-a-half minutes of strolling – allowing for 30 opens and closes. Function meets form with five chic colour options. £950, didofy.com

TAKE IT EASY
If you’ve just had a baby, there’s a lot to be said about ‘pulling up the drawbridge’. Taking a step back and locking yourself away as a little family unit, to get to know your baby, rest and recuperate, is one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself. You’ll never get that time again, so cherish that baby bubble. Trust us, no one will mind waiting a couple of weeks to meet the latest addition.

EMBRACE ROUTINE
When it comes to those hazy first few weeks, just go with the flow, but after a couple of months start thinking about routines. Babies love predictability and a consistent bedtime routine is an absolute gamechanger when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep (them and you). A bath, a feed, swaddling, singing – whatever works for you, just keep it calm and positive. Visit the Baby website for lots of bedtime routine tips.

MAKE TIME FOR EACH OTHER
PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK
Sleep deprivation can turn even the most relaxed person into a lunatic, and it’s easy to fall into the ‘who’s more tired’ argument with your partner when you have a baby. Some days you might feel as though you haven’t spoken to each other at all, apart from to ask where the wet wipes are, so making time for yourselves as a couple is essential. Whether it’s a walk and chat while the baby sleeps in the pram, or a date night, you need to take time to remind yourself why you fell in love with each other in the first place.

DON’T FEEL GUILTY Mum-guilt is real – but we say, make 2019 the year you’re unapologetic about your choices. Want a day at home in your PJs, with just your
baby and Phil and Holly for company? Do it! Feeling pressured into signing up for baby massage classes with your NCT pals? That’s fine – just say no. Can’t face any more visitors this week? Be honest. Make 2019 a guilt-free zone.

SHARE THE LOAD
It’s typical for one person to take on more parenting duties, especially if the other is at work full-time, but there’s no excuse for not sharing the load. Make no mistake, having a baby can be hard work when you’re doing it all solo, so make a resolution to speak up and ask your partner to get involved. If you’re a single parent, ask family and friends for help when you need it – it’s true what they say, it takes a village.

BE PRACTICAL
If you do one thing this year, book yourself onto a first-aid course. The Red Cross (redcross.org.uk/ first-aid) run dedicated courses teaching first aid for babies and children, arming you with the skills you need to help in an emergency. Hopefully you’ll never have to put these into practise, but you can relax knowing you’ve got these first-aid skills to hand if the need arises.

CAPTURE MEMORIES
Whether your baby’s one week or one year old, the urge to capture their cuteness in all its glory is strong! Instead of leaving all those photos on your phone, do something about it. Print out your favourite photos once a month, or create a photo book online, which you can add to every month before ordering at the end of the year. It’s so worth the effort – plus, Christmas gifts sorted!

LOVE YOURSELF
As a mum, you’ll often put everyone else before you. If the pecking order at your house reads something like: baby, husband, dog, you, it’s time for a change. Self-care is a necessity, not an option, if you want to stay strong and healthy, both physically and mentally. Get some exercise, even if it’s a brisk walk with your little one strapped to you in the baby carrier, try and eat well and get as much sleep as you possibly can. And never be afraid to ask for help if you need a break.

STOP COMPARING
As if creating a little human isn’t mindblowing enough, watching them grow and develop into actual walking, talking people is another level of wonderment. Rolling over, crawling, walking, talking – there’s always some kind of baby milestone on the horizon, and chances are your little one might not reach them all at the same time as others. Instead of obsessing over everything they’re not doing, celebrate what they are. Every baby hits those milestones in their own time and it’s always worth the wait.

MAKE FRIENDS
We know there’s something faintly terrifying about making new friends as a grownup, but even if you feel like you’ve got plenty of friends already, making the effort to meet new people who are going through the same thing as you is so important, especially with a new child in tow. Be brave and sign up to that local antenatal class or head along to the baby group up the road. You might just end up meeting some amazing women to share the craziness of being a new mum, as well as random late-night Whatsapp chats when you’re up feeding.

any of us understand what it means to be a working parent, but for Lydia Barron and Anna Tizard – founders of changing-bag brand, Tiba + Marl – it’s a role that’s been taken to a whole other level. “We laugh a lot when we think about how naïve we were when we started,” smiles Anna. “We’d both just had babies, and as we struggled with childcare, they literally had to come along for the ride. Our idea of mumand-baby outings was Copenhagen trade shows and bank managers’ offices!” But while life remains hectic for the two friends – who met 16 years ago working at Miss Selfridge’s head office – these days, a sustainable work-life balance is within reach. “It was tough but empowering, and as soon as we knew we could cope through that, nothing would be as difficult again,” Anna adds. “Nowadays it feels as though we’re living the dream; our kids are in school and we work four days a week. It all feels so much easier – it took us five years to get here though!” The business has come a long way since then, too; after launching in 2013, Tiba + Marl has expanded from two to seven team members, with the brand’s stylish, trend-led changing bags proving a huge success all over the world. Tom Hardy, Russell Brand, Fearne Cotton and Kirsten Dunst are just some of the famous faces among their many fans. “I don’t think we’ll ever not be ridiculously excited when we see a celebrity with one of our products,” says Lydia. “We’ve also spotted Tom and Giovanna Fletcher with a Tiba + Marl bag, as well as Frankie Bridge and Binky Felsted. We have an Olympian following, too, including Greg Rutherford, Tom Daley and Rebecca Adlington. It’s pretty amazing.” The story behind Tiba + Marl began when the pair noticed a need for “cool, unisex changing bags” after both becoming parents back in 2012. “Lydia was pregnant with her second child and I was on maternity leave with my first,” explains Anna. “We identified a gap in the market and had a mutual desire to be
M
more in control of our working lives.” “We started off with a whole collection, against the advice of an independent small business advisor we visited,” adds Lydia. They began by launching 11 bags, including a backpack, a weekender, two totes and a changing clutch. The risk paid off, and Tiba + Marl has been reaping the rewards ever since. Unlike other changing bags on the market, much of the brand’s appeal stems from the fact its bags are made for both men and women – something Lydia tells me is one of Tibi + Marl’s key objectives. So, why unisex? “At the time, dads weren’t really being represented and we wanted to change that. So, we featured a man in our first look book – without making a big deal of it – just a nice
AT THE TIME, DADS WEREN’T REALLY BEING REPRESENTED AND WE WANTED TO CHANGE THAT shot of a man wearing a unisex backpack, carrying his baby,” explains Lydia. “It garnered a lot of attention because it was offering something new, which was great for us as well as our customers. In fact, our bestselling style is our most unisex one, but dads still love repping our floral designs!” Inspiration comes from all over, with Anna often looking to Instagram. “I love accounts like @sheerluxe, @houselust, @homeplaceonline and @selfservicemagazine. And obviously living in London is a constant source; I love seeing what people are wearing, particularly in Soho and East London.” “We have stuff all over the walls in the office – from samples and swatches to a mood board that we add to as the season progresses,” Lydia adds. “We’re always sending each other ideas we find along the way.” A former footwear and accessories designer for the likes of Kurt Geiger and Sigerson
Morrison, Lydia also admits to having a doodles notebook, a design app on her phone and thumbnail sketches all over her desk. As the more artistic half of the partnership, her role involves designing each piece for the brand, including all the details and technical specifications that bring the designs to life. “The creative starting point – in terms of what the product might first look like – of prints and colour palettes is something that we work on together. We’re constantly batting ideas around, but we really enjoy it.” Anna, too, has a strong background in fashion, previously working as a bag buyer for huge global brands such as Topshop and Urban Outfitters. The duo’s keen eye for what’s hot, what’s not, and – more importantly – what consumers need, is not to be underestimated. “We like monochrome, androgynous and sport-inspired clothing, which is reflected in the range,” Anna says. “Our brains are always

switched on to what’s trending and what’s not working so well. It helps that we’re massively aligned in terms of our style and outlook.” “The main thing that makes it work is that we share the same vision for the brand,” Lydia chips in. “We do occasionally disagree, but we’ve known when to compromise from the get-go. The funny thing is that we’re both stubborn and opinionated, but we manage to let all that go when it comes to our business.” The brand boasts an illustrious list of stockists, too, from Yoox and Farfetch to Shopbop, AlexandAlexa, and Selfridges – a partnership that proves how far you can get by refusing to take ‘no’ for an answer. The Felix holdall is one of the brand’s popular unisex styles
“We met the Selfridges buyer at a trade show, and although she loved what we were doing, they didn’t have space at the time,” says Lydia. “We hounded her until that changed, and they started stocking us two months after we launched!” “We’ve built great relationships with all our buyers, from chains and independents to overseas stockists. They’ve been so supportive.” As for what’s next for Tiba + Marl, fans can expect a gorgeous new collection at the end of January (expect plenty of neon and snake print), plus plenty more brand collaborations and an online revamp. But regardless of what the future holds, Anna and Lydia are clearly just delighted to be doing something they love in tandem. “There have been times when we’ve definitely been winging it!” laughs Anna. “But we have to recognise what we’ve achieved in the last few years and be grateful for everything, even the mistakes we’ve made.” “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lydia chimes in. “The difficulties have been our biggest learning experiences, but seeing something you’ve built grow is so exhilarating. And sharing that journey has been really special.”

hat does self-care mean to you? A smelly candle and a bath brimming with bubbles? A glass of wine and a box set? It’s bandied about Instagram and worthy of its own hashtag, but in the purest sense, it’s more essential than that. It’s a term that needs a definition because it’s often misunderstood. Suzy Reading, a psychologist specialising in wellbeing, defines it as healthcare. “The shape it takes is different from one person to the next, but it is nourishment for our head, heart and body. It’s what nourishes you in the moment, and what nourishes the person you’re becoming. So pour that glass of wine, savour it, but don’t have the entire bottle because your future self

if you don’t look after your health, you can’t look after others. We need everyday, nourishing practises to sustain us for them – this is where it’s not just about bubble baths and spa days!” Zoe Blaskey is a wellbeing expert and founder of Motherkind, which helps stressedout, busy, modern mums reconnect to themselves, starting with self kindness. As well as one-to-one coaching courses, Zoe produces a series of podcasts with wellness experts aimed specifically at mums. Her podcasts are so effective that some GPs have started advising mums at their six-week check to tune in. Zoe explains: “It sounds obvious, but we can’t drink from an empty cup; we
IT’S WHAT NOURISHES YOU IN THE MOMENT, AND WHAT NOURISHES THE PERSON YOU’RE BECOMING won’t thank you when the hangover kicks in!” As Suzy, a mum of two, points out, most people are well versed in what nourishes our bodies – we brush our teeth, go to the gym, eat well – but when it comes to the other stuff, we often draw a blank. As mums of babies and young children, this is the time when we need self-care the most; paradoxically, it’s also the time when it can seem the least accessible. “We need to take time for ourselves, but it can feel like we’re diverting resources so we feel guilty. However,

have to accept and recognise how demanding motherhood is. The stress and strain on our mind and bodies is something we’ve never had to deal with before and it’s exhausting – it’s like learning a new job every day! Give yourself permission to accept that it’s challenging, accept how you’re finding the experience. It’s the same for most mums. Recognise that in order to look after babies and toddlers, we need to look after ourselves. If we don’t, it can lead to anxiety, illness (particularly with lack of sleep) and feelings of overwhelm,” says Zoe.
“Breastfeeding can lead to dehydration and dehydration can tip you into anxiety.” There are quick, accessible, healing practises we can do to help. “Being with the breath, taking a longer exhale than inhale, is a good place to start,” says Suzy. “Or rest your forehead against something firm, which helps relax the eyes and soften the jaw – both are soothing practises. We teach out babies to self-soothe, how about ourselves?” How we talk to ourselves it also key. “Tune out of your inner critic and into the village elder. What would they say? Probably something like, ‘It’s tough, everyone is having these thoughts, take some time.’” Suzy adds.

ZOE’S IN-THE-MOMENT QUICK-FIXES

Shallow breathing from our chest tells our pre-frontal cortex that something is wrong, which leads to feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. This means we need to change our breathing pattern. Take three deep breaths, through your nose and out your mouth, feeling your stomach expanding. For bonus points, say ‘calm’ when you breathe in and ‘all is well’ when you breathe out. Zoe offers this supportive, practical strategy. “At a time when you’re feeling good, work out your different feeling states. On a piece of paper, draw three columns and start with when you feel at your most challenged. Let’s use the example of lonely. So in the first column (for feelings), write ‘lonely’. In the second column, write about how that looks for you (for example, not seeing your friends, not going out, scrolling through social media. Finally, in the third column write what you need in that moment (it may be to call a mum-friend or look back at some photos of you with friends). Then put this somewhere prominent so when those feelings surface, you
can look at what you need. It’s like you’ve built your own self-care menu.” When you become a mother, you need a whole new self-care kit because often what you used to don’t isn’t always available. We need new tools that are within reach – bitesize, micro moments of practise. For Suzy, these needs to be easy. “Stroke a cat, watch the sunset, listen to music, send a text to someone you love, look at your baby’s eye lashes and drink them in and you will melt into the moment.” So what is self-care? Maybe it’s about loving yourself enough to look at your own needs and then both you and your family will reap the rewards.
Our inner critic comes out when we’re tired and depleted. If your baby doesn’t eat their lunch you may think, ‘oh no, this lunch wasn’t good, my baby doesn’t know I love them, I’m not present enough.’ If you notice that unkind voice (it’s normally loud and harsh), stop and notice the surfaces around you – the feeling of the breeze on your face, the table against your arm, the stool you’re sitting on, anything that can bring you back into the moment. Suzy’s book, The Self-Care Revolution, is available on Amazon, suzyreading.co.uk; Zoe’s podcast is available on motherkind.co

However with only approximately 5.5 per cent of fitness industry professionals being qualified in pre- and postnatal exercise, finding the right information on how to train safely can be tricky. After the birth of my first son, I was shocked at how little information was available for women looking to stay active postpartum. For many women this can be a confusing time as outdated statements and myths litter the internet. Whether you’re expecting or already have a little gym companion, here’s my guide to preand postnatal exercise, including the benefits, myths to ignore, and easy exercises you can do in your own home.

PRENATAL EXERCISES PHYSICAL BENEFITS
Keeping mobile during pregnancy is a great way to relieve aches and strains, while also improving your posture. Additionally, exercising during this time will help to improve muscle tone, strength and endurance, all of which will aid an efficient labour. It’s important to remember that pregnancy isn’t the time to start over-exerting yourself and pushing your physical boundaries. It’s best to start with small lifestyle changes that are sustainable (e.g walking once or twice a week).
MENTAL WELLBEING Exercising during pregnancy also has positive

benefits for a mother’s mental wellbeing. Getting out in the fresh air has been proven to boost mood and aid better sleep. Alongside which, the right fitness programme can be used to prepare you mentally for the journey that lies ahead.
EXERCISE SUGGESTIONS PELVIC FLOOR
Maintaining a strong and supple pelvic floor is important throughout pregnancy. During labour, the pelvic floor muscles are recruited to help baby descend down the birthing canal. Being able to relax these muscles in labour is also important as it has been suggested that this can reduce the risk of tearing or the need for an episiotomy.
SQUATS The full squat is a great, non-impact exercise that helps to open the pelvis. In the third trimester it’s important to stay within a comfortable range to avoid over-stretching

In those final weeks leading up to labour, getting outside for some fresh air whilst mobilising the joints is great! SETTING THE NEW-MUM RECORD STRAIGHT
The confusion surrounding postnatal fitness is to some degree understandable, as it largely depends on each individual’s pregnancy and labour experiences, however a few facts do remain the same: • According to The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), ‘if both pregnancy and delivery are uncomplicated, a mild exercise programme consisting of walking and pelvic floor exercises may begin immediately’. • It’s important to understand the role of the hormone relaxin. Produced around the second week of pregnancy, its role is to soften the ligaments around the pelvis, preparing the body for labour. However, the effects of relaxin can’t be isolated to one area, meaning the stability of all joints throughout the body will be compromised. It can take approximately five months for the level of

Blood volume increases, sebaceous glands produce more natural oils and water retention plumpens. The welcome result is often brighter skin. And the inner joy of carrying new life reflected in your face, assuming you don’t still feel like throwing up constantly. However, once you have a flawless newborn in your arms, your complexion can tell a different story. A major culprit here is sleep deprivation. After all, it’s impossible to look your best when you’re being woken up at three-hourly intervals. But it’s not the only issue. Dermatologist Dr Anita Sturnham says hormones have a lot to answer for, too. “As your pregnancy hormones normalise and sex hormones regulate, you may be prone to spots and breakouts post-pregnancy,” she says. “Skin can also be dry, and cell turnover slows down in the late stages of pregnancy.” Dr Sturnham suggests a low-maintenance skincare routine, such as a Sebamed Micellar water cleanse, followed by a rebalancing toner and moisturiser that’s rich in nutrients. However, once you’ve got a baby to take care of, it’s easy to neglect your own needs. Jennifer Gledhill, the founder of Love Boo, a natural skincare brand for mums, says: “We worry about how our skin will change while pregnant, but forget about it once baby arrives. LABOUR
The blood line
Miss Marcellina Coker, CON SU LTANT OBSTE TRICIAN AN D GYNAECOLOGIST AT TH E PORTL AN D H OSPITAL E XPL AIN S EVERY THING TH ER E IS TO KN OW ABOUT TH E PL ACENTA he placenta is an organ attached to the lining of your womb during pregnancy. It’s vital for the health of your unborn child because it keeps their blood supply separate from your own, as well as providing a link between the two. The link allows the placenta to carry out functions that your unborn baby can’t perform for itself. Inside her amniotic sac, your baby’s connected to the placenta by the umbilical cord.
T
WHAT DOES THE PLACENTA DO? To grow, your baby needs nutrients, water, oxygen, antibodies to fight diseases, and an outlet to remove waste like carbon dioxide – and the placenta provides all of these. Oxygen and nutrients pass from your blood supply into the placenta. From there, the umbilical cord carries oxygen and nutrients to your unborn baby. Waste products from the baby pass back along the umbilical cord to the placenta and then into your bloodstream, for your body to dispose of. It also gives the baby protection against most bacteria, viruses and infections while in the womb.
experience further contractions that will push the placenta out of the vagina. You can choose to let your body pass the placenta naturally – breastfeeding your baby can also stimulate the womb to contract and push the placenta out. Another option is to medically stimulate the contractions to help it out: an injection into the thigh just as the baby is born that makes your womb contract, so the placenta comes away from the womb lining shortly after the birth. If you have a c-section, the placenta will also be manually delivered by the obstetrician. After birth, your midwife will check it, to ensure nothing’s been left behind.
ARE THERE ANY COMPLICATIONS? A few rare but serious complications can arise: • Placental insufficiency or placenta
bleeding or strong contractions in the second or third trimester. Most bleeding comes from the edge of the placenta and shouldn’t affect the baby. Occasionally the bleed is large, which may lead to delivering the baby prematurely or pose a risk of fatality to the baby. Most abruptions bleed out, but some will only cause pain and no bleeding. A scan can only show abruption if it’s large and behind the placenta. • Placenta praevia occurs when the placenta covers the cervix. There’s a high risk of maternal bleeding, especially in the third trimester. The location of the placenta will sometimes adjust on its own as the uterus grows, particularly if the placenta only partially covers the cervix (known as marginal placenta previa). If the cervix is covered at full-term, you’ll most likely deliver via c-section. Placenta praevia is more likely if you’ve had a c-section and the placenta lies to the front of the womb. • Placenta accreta occurs when the placenta’s blood vessels grow too deeply into the uterine wall. The conditions is usually diagnosed during an ultrasound, your pregnancy will be closely monitored. You may be put on bed rest and, depending on how deeply the organ’s embedded into the uterine wall, you may need a hysterectomy after your baby’s born.
THE LINK ALLOWS THE PLACENTA TO CARRY OUT FUNCTIONS THAT YOUR UNBORN BABY CAN’T
High blood pressure, diabetes, blood clotting problems, being over 40 years old, previous surgery, multiple pregnancies, and previous placenta problems can affect it. Most of these conditions aren’t modifiable, but your doctor will advise you on managing the relevant condition at your regular antenatal check. The remedy can be as simple as a daily dose of aspirin to reduce the risk of complications.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER? The placenta is usually disposed through medical waste at the hospital. However, some women choose to ingest it. The nutrients that have passed from mother to fetus throughout pregnancy are still there, and can help her recover from labour and start breastfeeding. It can be made into a face cream, pâté, or even pills. However, medical studies haven’t proven that this is effective.

dysfunction occurs when the placenta’s unable to deliver an adequate supply of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus. It can be coupled with risk of pre-eclampsia, restricted growth or stillbirth. You’ll be monitored with ultrasound and regular antenatal checks. • Retained placenta occurs if the uterus doesn’t contract sufficiently to expel it after birth, or if the cervix starts to close before it’s left the body. If any of the placenta remains inside the body, it can lead to infection and haemorrhaging. Doctors can remove the remaining placenta with medication to force the uterus to contract, or by hand. In some situations, surgery may be required. • Placental abruption occurs when the placenta detaches partially or completely from the uterine wall. The first signs are

BREASTFEEDING
The Breastfeeding Café with
PROFESSOR AMY BROWN
THIS ISSUE WE ASK:
IS IT SAFE TO START EXERCISING AGAIN IF I’M BREASTFEEDING?
A
fter all the seasonal excess, many of us end up promising ourselves we will get fitter in the new year. But what about if you’re breastfeeding? Is exercise OK? The good news is that yes, absolutely, exercise is perfectly fine, although what and how much will depend on your personal circumstances. But gentle, regular exercise after having a baby can be great for both your physical and mental health, as it gets you active while giving you some alone time. If you’re reading this and feeling pressure to lose weight, remember that you’ve just grown a whole new human being and are now keeping them alive using your breasts. Be kind to yourself and only exercise if it’s what you want to do. There’s no rush. If you’re reading this and want to get fit to lose some weight or tone up but are worried about whether this is ok when breastfeeding, the good news again is that losing weight, through a varied healthy diet and with just small, steady weight loss of around a kilo each week is absolutely fine. Depending on how old your baby is, and how fit you were before having them, it’s a good idea to start out very gently. Many health professionals would advise waiting until after your six-week check to do anything too

active, particularly if you’ve had a c-section, but a gentle walk in the sunshine (well, we can hope) with your baby is a lovely start. If your baby’s under six weeks old, cuddling them with your feet up is a recommended activity for this stage! The type and level of exercise should depend on what your body has been used to through pregnancy and beforehand. Make sure you take it easy and slowly, particularly if you were less active than usual during pregnancy. If you’re exhausting yourself, you’ll be putting a strain on your already likely sleep-deprived body. Having said that, women can and do run marathons and perform other physical feats while breastfeeding without any detriment to their milk supply or physical wellbeing. As is often the case when it comes to growing and feeding babies, if you do too much, your baby will likely be fine, but you may end up exhausted. HOW TO APPROACH • A good sports bra is really important. Some women wear two to make sure nothing is moving anywhere. Make sure it fits well and that you take it off as soon as you finish, as too much constriction may put you at risk of mastitis. • Feeding (or expressing) before you exercise will help you feel more comfortable. Overly full breasts and bouncing around don’t make for a comfortable experience! • You’ll still have higher levels than normal of relaxin – the hormone that soften your ligaments and muscles to grow and birth your baby. Try not to overstretch, pound pavements, or twist suddenly. • The lactic acid you produce might affect the taste of your breast milk. If you have been sweating, the salts on your skin might change the smell or taste of your chest. If your baby seems displeased, shower before feeding them, but many babies will be fine.

PREGNANCY
TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT
SCANS The sisters discuss the different scan options during your pregnancy journey
eeing your baby at any of your scans is an unforgettable moment. During your pregnancy you’ll have two main scans: the 12-week check up and 20-week scan – both performed using ultrasound. Ultrasound scans have been used in pregnancy since the mid-1950s and have no known sideeffects for mother or baby. They’re a really good way of having a non-invasive yet detailed look inside the uterus at the developing fetus. It’s now widely accepted that due dates predicted from scans are the most accurate. Of course, if you’ve had IVF and know the precise date of implantation, you’ll know
S
THE 12-WEEK CHECK-UP (NUCHAL SCAN) The 12-week check-up is really important. Using a combination of ultrasound and a blood test, it determines the risk of the fetus having a chromosomal abnormality, such as Down’s syndrome, as well as many other things, including genetic syndromes and structural abnormalities. The ultrasound scan checks the fetus is growing well but another purpose is to look at the translucent or clear space in the tissue at the back of your fetus’s neck – hence the name, ‘nuchal scan’. The baby’s nasal bone is also measured. Babies with
exactly. If you believe you know as ‘it could only have happened on one night’, remember that sperm can live up to seven days, so fertilisation can occur the day you have sex (if you ovulate that day) or a few days later. It’s important to remember that although the scans are good, they don’t always detect every abnormality. A normal scan, although reassuring, doesn’t give a 100-per-cent clean bill of health. For example, of the one per cent of babies born with a heart abnormality, about half of these are picked up at birth or later. The scans only look at the structure of the organs but can’t give us much information about their function; this can be more carefully assessed after the baby is born.
90 | baby-magazine.co.uk
abnormalities tend to accumulate more fluid behind the neck and have absent nasal bones. Sometimes this scan is also called the ‘dating scan’ as it accurately predicts the due date more so than dating from your last period. In order for the tests to be accurate, the check-up must be done between 11 and 14 weeks. It doesn’t give you a diagnosis of any abnormalities, simply an idea of whether you’re at high or low risk of certain conditions. If the risk is deemed high you may be advised to have chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis tests; these are the only accurate ways of testing for chromosomal abnormalities. However, they’re invasive and associated with a small risk of miscarriage.
PHOTOGRAPHY: HELENE SANDBERG
REMEMBER THAT ALTHOUGH THE SCANS ARE GOOD, THEY DON’T ALWAYS DETECT EVERY ABNORMALITY
PREGNANCY
Bear in mind that CVS isn’t usually done after 14 weeks, so it’s a good idea to do the 12-week scan earlier rather than later, allowing time to arrange further tests if necessary.
NON-INVASIVE PRENATAL TESTING, (THE HARMONY TEST) Fairly recently, a new test has become available in the UK, known as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). This is offered in private clinics across the UK under brand names such as the Harmony Test, as well as Nifty, Panorama, Verify, MaterniT21 and SAFE. The NHS is beginning to use it and a number of trusts are offering it to women who are deemed high risk after the initial screening, instead of proceeding straight to invasive amniocentesis or CVS tests. Invasive testing carries with it a chance of miscarriage which NIPT doesn’t. The NIPT test works by detecting the baby’s DNA in the mother’s blood from a blood test, usually taken at around 10 weeks. With this DNA, the lab can much more accurately (around 99 per cent) assess the risk of genetic abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome. In the private sector, this test costs around £500. If the test is positive, the result would still need to be confirmed with amniocentesis or CVS. Most professionals agree that NIPT is an exciting medical development which in the future may prevent the miscarriage of healthy fetuses through invasive DNA testing. We all know that the NHS is stretched financially, so can’t always offer the newest tests immediately. Therefore, for mothers who have a history of genetic abnormalities or are slightly older – and therefore at an increased risk – and can afford it, NIPT is worth doing.
THE 20-WEEK SCAN (ANOMALY SCAN) For most women, the 12-week scan is the green light to celebrate and get excited about being pregnant. But eight weeks later you have another ultrasound that looks closely at how the fetus and all her organs are developing. Rather than just a quick look to see if all is well, or tell you the sex of your fetus, at the 20week scan the sonographer will spend a lot of time looking at your fetus’s various organs to check they’re developing as they should be. What will be checked? • Head and brain • Heart chambers, valves and blood vessels • Abdominal contents – particularly the kidneys and stomach • Spine
• Facial features • Hands and feet • Placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic fluid • Genitals – this is usually the time they can tell you whether you’re having a girl or a boy. Unfortunately, it’s at this scan that abnormalities are sometimes found. Most irregular findings are minor and may require rescanning or surgery but won’t necessarily affect the outcome of your pregnancy. In some cases, the abnormalities are potentially life-threatening. This is devastating for parents, but the teams are specially trained to support couples at this time and offer excellent care. Do remember that these cases are very rare indeed. In the UK we’re lucky to be at the cutting-edge of science, and every precaution is taken to ensure that our babies arrive fit and healthy. For most mothers, the 20-week scan is a window to their uterus, where they can see their perfect baby growing beautifully. So, enjoy it and prepare to get emotional! Dr Chiara Hunt and Marina Fogle are the founders of The Bump Class, which provides antenatal classes in South West London. Their podcast The Parent Hood, is free to download on iTunes and Acast. Visit thebumpclass.com
EXTRA SCANS There are many other scans and tests available privately, here are your options: Fetal viability scans, at six to 10 weeks, will check that the embryo has implanted correctly and, from seven weeks, you’ll be able to hear a heartbeat. This scan is often done internally. Cost: approx £100. 3D scans show stills of your baby in three dimensions, and 4D scans show moving 3D images of your baby. You may also be able to see the shape of your baby’s mouth and nose. It’s best to have these between 26-30 weeks. Cost: from £50. There’s mounting pressure for Late scans to be part of routine NHS care. They check that baby’s growing nicely, that the placenta is healthy and the amount of amniotic fluid. Doctors may also do a Doppler scan to check the umbilical cord blood flow. Cost: approx £150.

Cover the bowl with cling film and place in the fridge for at least 6 hours, overnight if possible. Make the apple pie filling: Place the chopped apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, maple syrup and water into a small saucepan and place over a medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring continuously. Once boiling, turn the heat down to low and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until thick and the apples are tender. You want them soft, but with a little bite still. To serve, divide the oats into 2-3 portions and top each with the apple pie filling. Serve warm or cold. To warm, place in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, until desired temperature is achieved.

Gara Rock’s apartments are ideal for families
SALCOMBE Kerry Spencer AN D H ER FAMILY DISCOVER TH E U LTIMATE SE ASIDE E SCAPE AT GAR A ROCK IN DEVON
hen I booked us into Gara Rock near Salcombe, for my husband Eamonn’s 40th birthday — and our 11-month-old son Sebastian’s first staycation — I wasn’t expecting magical sunsets in November. But that’s exactly what greeted us when we arrived after a five-hour drive from London. Sitting on south Devon’s craggy coastline, Gara Rock’s home to a curved ocean-facing restaurant, two swimming pools, spa and a cinema. Brimming with cool artwork and chic details, this stylish new hotel certainly complements its extravagant views. We stayed in one of the hotel’s spacious apartments, which featured three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and two balconies. While the apartments are more practical for families, the loft rooms and suites feel more luxe, with Nespresso machines, rolltop bathtubs and balconies. Spending our first night in the comfort of our apartment allowed us to prepare Sebastian’s dinner, while my husband and I feasted on cheeses we’d picked up in a local farm shop. The following morning, we planned our day over a delicious English breakfast and fresh coffee. With Sebastian in his baby carrier we then set off for the tiny smugglers’ cove below the hotel. The descent to the beach takes roughly 15 minutes on foot and provides plenty of photo opps along the way.

Following our walk, we took turns enjoying Elemis treatments at the spa, before splashing around in the indoor pool with our boy. There’s also a Jacuzzi and steam room, and even an outdoor swimming pool for the summer months. We opted for cocktails and nibbles by the fire in the hotel’s lounge that evening, with hotel staff doting on Sebastian as they passed. This was followed with a private screening of The Godfather in the plush cinema room. The hotel has a library of old and newer movies for guests to watch, free of charge, including more age-appropriate options for older children. Gara Rock offers three scheduled screenings per day and the cinema can be hired out for private use at other times. Having it to ourselves meant there was a private space where Sebastian could crawl around – cushioned by giant beanbags – without disturbing other hotel guests. While the purpose of our stay was to do as little as possible, there are plenty of activities available for more energetic guests, including surf lessons, foraging trails and yoga classes. Staff can also ferry guests to and from Salcombe in a Land Rover. However, with so much on offer indoors, we didn’t feel the need to leave the hotel, nor did we want to. Room prices from £200 per night, including breakfast. gararock.com

BUSINESS
Jessica took over her parents’ business and rebranded it
This adorable traditional wooden toy feautures an abacus for added learning and play factor Petit Collage carnival play set £40, cottage-toys.co.uk
INSPIRE How did Cottage Toys & Interiors come about? After becoming a mother, my career in fashion was no longer a priority – I wanted to create something of my own that would also fit in around my children. I was given the chance to take over Cottage Toys from my parents. They’d retired and the website was no longer active, but the business was still running and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. I rebuilt the site and rebranded the business as Cottage Toys and Interiors. We stock the same traditional brands as before, alongside many exciting new ones too. How do you balance your family life with work? It’s a constant juggle; when you run your own business you never really switch off. With so much to remember, I’ve started writing lists for everything, and have a timetable pinned up by the front door at home so we don’t forget homework, kit or snacks for after-school
114 | baby-magazine.co.uk
JESSICA PORTWAY The mum of two and owner of Cottage Toys & Interiors talks traditional toys, Teeny cots and constant juggling clubs. But I’m really lucky that I have family nearby as backup during school holidays. The girls also do various clubs, which gives me a few extra hours. During holidays they sometimes come into the office with me. On these occasions, I make sure it’s never for more than a few hours. I’ll then do something nice with them for the rest of the day, like go to the park or meet up with friends. The company has branched out into kids’ interiors
How do you choose which brands to stock? When choosing brands it’s not just the classic wooden designs that are important, but I do love how timeless traditional toys are. Brands I stock also need to be ethical and their manufacture must be sustainable and eco friendly. The BBC documentary Drowning in Plastic really shocked me and made me even more determined to provide products that won’t be harmful to our environment or children. For me that’s one of the biggest appeals of wooden toys. I make sure that the brands we stock are also of the highest quality so that they’ll last and be passed down generations. I also have two young children who are very good toy testers! Generally if they enjoy playing with something I know it’ll be a hit.
What has made you most proud? It always makes me proud when I get emails and messages from happy customers, or I get a new customer based on a recommendation. It was also a really proud moment when we won our first award, a Junior Design award for Best Toy Retailer. I have it on my desk at work. What’s in store for 2019? I have lots of exciting plans for 2019. It’s been a really natural progression to introduce interiors to the product range and everything we’ve done so far has been really well received. I have some really gorgeous new Australian brands that we’ll be bringing over to complement the Incy Interiors nursery furniture. I also hope to expand this range. Everyone wants a Teeny cot! I’m also extremely conscious that traditional wooden toys are the root of the business so I’m always on the look-out for new brands to grow this area even further. I also hope to get some full-time staff to hopefully help with the constant mum juggle! cottage-toys.co.uk
