Go to page 68, where Sarah Dawson cuts through the confusion by outlining which beauty products are and aren’t safe to use during pregnancy. If your little one is about to reach her landmark first birthday, then no doubt a big bash is on the cards. Our resident party expert Carole Middleton knows a thing or two about baby celebrations; head to page 59 for her tips on how to celebrate the big day in style. Of course baby countdown continues with all eyes on Meghan and Harry. And given her holistic approach to life, Royal author Katie Nicholl explains why the Duchess of Sussex may want a doula by her side, and how they can enhance the birthing experience (p.64). The Spanish childrenswear label has just opened its first UK store in Marylebone and after a personal tour of the boutique, it’s a newfound favourite of mine. MY ESSENTIALS Firstly, tell us about your new CBeebies show, The Baby Club. The Baby Club is essentially a baby club for your home! Baby clubs are great for a baby’s development and also for parents to get out and meet other parents. When you first become a parent, the thought of taking your baby out can sometimes cause quite a lot of anxiety. What The Baby Club does is put the emphasis back on you and your child having that bonding experience; playing, discovering and singing together in the comfort of your own home. It’s been an absolute joy to work on. I connect so much with why it was made, too; when Buzz was 10 weeks old I signed up to about four baby classes in one go, but I was worried about the fact I was a new mum, scared Buzz going to cry, and thought people would judge if he did, so it then became more about that than actually enjoying the class. With The Baby Club, the idea was to

Stepping away from something [after having a baby] when you’ve been working on it or even created it is hard. I think a lot of mums are now picking jobs in areas that are a huge part of us. INTERVIEW

UPTON’S GIRL As new-parent role models go, model and actress Kate Upton is one of the most unexpected but welcome, says Violet Wilder
hether we’re part of the celebrity clique or not, whether our bank balance has a string of noughts after it, or just one depressing single-digit zero, we all reserve the right to set boundaries when it comes to our perception of privacy. And no better defined is that line we draw than when it comes to our children. So while some well-known names pursue an almost fanatical approach to protecting their little ones, as is their right – Paloma Faith’s firstborn arrived in December 2016 and she is yet to reveal even its gender, let alone a name – others are rather happier to spread the joy of a newborn to those who are interested… and model Kate Upton definitely falls into the latter category. “I try to be very open with my life,” she begins. “While there are personal things that happen that I want to keep private, I don’t really feel I have anything to hide. As a person, I’m confident and honest, and I believe that’s how I’d be even if I wasn’t in the spotlight.” Kate, and husband Justin Verlander, the baseball player, have so enthusiastically grasped both the joys and challenges of pregnancy and parenting over the past year, it’s difficult to believe their most anxious moment was naming their baby daughter. “I think it’s because it’s such a high-pressure decision,” Kate laughs, “so much so that we were going back and forth between names, even in the hospital. Justin had some real name commitment issues. He knew that Genevieve was my favourite, so I just left him to fill out the paperwork!” Since the name was revealed to the world – Genevieve Upton Verlander – Kate hasn’t been shy in filling her social media channels with pictures, thoughts and anecdotes. Given where the 26-year-old comes from, and after over a decade spent in the lens, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that the Michigan-born actress and model is extraordinarily relaxed about media attention. The new mum, who was made famous by that Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2011, and had the honour of gracing the 100th anniversary cover of Vanity Fair, has not only played out the opening months of parenthood across social media, but also become something of an unexpected sounding board for new mums everywhere. In dramatic shift from the glamour of fashion, Kate has addressed weight gain, tiredness, anxiety and other insecurities associated with this major life shift. “There are so many things I just wasn’t expecting,” she confesses. “One of the most special things has been the bond Justin has with her – it makes me love him even more. He’s a great dad, and always on diaper duty! “It makes you want to do all you can,

W
personally, too. I think, at first, I wanted to look on parenting as similar to other challenges I’ve had in my life, namely that I’ve always come to terms with that pressure by telling myself I’m learning new things and putting myself out there. But even I’ve had to accept this is a challenge beyond any other.” As far allowing the public to embrace a new side to her, Kate is typically undeterred. “People are going to think whatever they want,” she says. “I don’t really try to change people’s perception of me; I’m really just trying to be myself – I’m just trying to be good at what I do.” And in addressing the body confidence issues that Kate has had to confront post-pregnancy, she insists she’s a work in progress. “I grew up in Florida and we were always running around in bikinis, so it was something natural for me. For a long time, hearing that women don’t feel that way – that they feel judged – made me sad, but I understand it now. It hurts, so I really try to be conscious about body image – to keep my confidence up, and that of others. And I can do that by bringing my personality into social media. I think that’s really important.” As far as rediscovering that model shape, Kate doesn’t seem in too much of a rush. “I’ve always tried to stay healthy whilst working out as much as possible, but there’s very little downtime. Since Genevieve came along I’ve been doing Strong for Me workouts in short bursts. They’re really effective 30-minute routines that can be done at home, so after she has had a feed, I’ll do some exercise, clear my mind and try to plan for later. For me it’s just a case of relaxing and restarting. “I think motherhood has also made me want to be honest with myself in terms of who I am,” she adds. “My curves are natural and I’m like this for a reason. They’re not going away, not that I’d want them to.” Of course, for someone who has always believed in being ambitious, the prospect of seeing a new life flourish is the greatest gift possible. From riding horses at international level at 13, to joining agency Elite Model Management three years later, to leaving behind fashion shoots to chance her arm in the film world, Kate Upton embraces new opportunities, and you suspect she’ll want Genevieve to follow suit. “Sometimes there are moments when I don’t feel great with my surroundings, but that’s all part of learning. I’m more about living in the moment than worrying about the past or the future, and that’s what I want to pass on. “Whether it’s wanting my child to be strong and confident, or trying to be a good inspiration to other women by having a healthy lifestyle, and being comfortable with my changing body, I believe anything’s possible, and it all starts within ourselves.”

nly now, some two months after the Battle of Stalingrad, otherwise known as ‘sleep training’, has a small-but-very-much-there window of nap time opened up for me each morning. A window I find myself filling with the basic act of showering and readying myself for the world. It is, I believe, the absolute best way to spend those precious 37 minutes. Not answering emails, not batchcooking pumpkin purée, but squirrelled away in the bathroom (monitor propped up by the sink) messing around with skincare and make-up. That, friends, is my chicken soup for the soul. In fact, I love messing around with skincare and make-up so much that I made it my job, spending 12 years running the beauty desks of women’s fashion magazines. It’s from this lineage - and my solid nine months mumhood experience - that I present to you: The No-Nonsense Mum Beauty List, the bits that every mother should have stuffed into her bathroom cabinet/nappy bag/coat pocket. It’s not remotely sexy, but a properly good foundation is top of the list. Your new-mum body doesn’t care about regenerating

2067-me to be exact. In lieu of a block-booking eight laser facials, foundation casts a deceptive veil over all skin ills; rendering it even, and possibly even inferring health and vitality, if done correctly. Find the best one for your skin type and tone and then cling to it forever. For me, it’s Charlotte Tilbury’s Miracle Foundation. It’s a bit old school in that once it goes on, it stays on. Locate a serum containing a big dose of hyaluronic acid. Your skin will be oscillating between oily and dry at this time of year, but if you’re breastfeeding, as I did through last year’s 10,000 day heat wave, it’s more likely to be the
actual Sahara Desert. Hyaluronic acid binds moisture to moisture and is the fastest, most direct way to give your skin a drink each day. A tomato-red lipstick. Yes, it must be tomato-red. Works for daytime, suits all skin tones, detracts from matchstick eyes, dark circles and three-day hair, all while elevating sweat pants. A body brush. I know, you’ve been lectured about body brushing by magazines for years, but truly, this is the best gift you can give your body each day. A three-minute dry brushing turfs out old toxins, boosts circulation, bolsters immunity and scaffolds skin. Forget cellulite creams. They
don’t work. A posh, expensive hand cream. Superfluous? Absolutely not. When you’ve traipsed a pram around the shops in the rain, picked up bits of half-chewed apple from the floor of Café Rouge, coordinated three nappy changes, washed your hands in the disabled loo sink and wiped them with nappy-changing wipes, your hands, to put it bluntly, deserve Chanel. Specifically, Chanel La Crème Main. It’s an eggshaped bottle which fits snugly in the palm of the hand and smells like a French medi-spa. It’s utterly joy-giving and frivolous, but also entirely necessary.

N EW PAR ENTS Nina AN D Ben – AN D TH EIR DAUGHTER Nico – PUT TH E STOKKE SCOOT TO TH E TE ST
W
e started researching buggies just after we found out we were expecting our first child. However, we were steered in the direction of Norwegian brand Stokke through a friend’s recommendation, which swiftly led us to the Stokke Scoot. We wanted a stroller that’s solid, sturdy, but still compact and agile enough to navigate London life. As we’re both quite tall, it was also important to have a pushchair positioned high enough – with an adjustable handlerbar – to be comfortable to use.
Nina found the Stokke Scoot was perfect for London strolls and adventures further afield
GOOD LOOKING? Though the appearance wasn’t our first priority, it’s a stylish choice. Of the many colour options to choose from we settled on the black melange, which is more of a dark grey, as it’s a very durable colour for our stroller’s constant use!
PRACTICALITY AND DRIVEABILITY We found the Scoot very easy to drive; we’ve been particularly impressed with the build of the buggy and the smoothness of the ride. It’s very responsive to turns and has a solid suspension, which comes in handy for everything from the bumps and curves of the London streets and beyond. We were worried that the size would be an issue when taking it into cafes and shops, but so far this hasn’t been a problem at all. What’s more, the Scoot’s very practical in its Nico finds the cosy pushchair perfect for an alfresco snooze
As well as being a smooth ride for Nico’s daytrips, the Stokke Scoot’s assembly is easy and practical

reassurance that she needs.
COMFORT When it’s been particularly cold, we’ve been using the pushchair with a Voksi Design footmuff which adds an extra layer of cosiness. Nico seems to have found it a very comfortable space to lie in, she’s often napping while we are out for our daily walks. The generous dimensions of the bassinet provide ample space for her while also being snug enough to give her all the warmth and
THE VERDICT Our overall verdict is entirely positive, as the Scoot has delivered on all of our expectations. We’d highly recommend this buggy to anyone who wanted a sturdy, practical, and comfortable experience for their baby. It fulfilled all of those needs and more. £517, stokke.com

t’s said that architect William Kent developed one of the first strollers in 1733, as requested by the Duke of Devonshire as a means of transport that would carry his children. Kent rose to the challenge admirably, constructing a shell-shaped basket on wheels that the kids could sit in. Nowadays, parents can choose from thousands of makes and models set to transport baby, or even babies, in the utmost style. From the fabric to the chassis, a pushchair is made up of many components all working together to provide a comfy yet cool ride for shipping precious cargo. Here we round-up some of the most eye-catching choices.
I

Mark this milestone moment in your little one’s life with a celebration for everyone to enjoy
C
ongratulations – you made it through the first year of parenthood! And whether you choose to keep this once-in-a-lifetime celebration cosy and intimate or you want a big birthday bash your friends and family will never forget, the key is to keep it fun-filled and personal. Is there a character, toy or song that baby loves? If so, a theme can be a great way to personalise a party, as well as tie all the details of the day together. Beatrix Potter characters, such as Peter Rabbit, are a classic choice, or for something more broad, how about farmyard animals, a star theme or a circus-inspired celebration? Be sure to cater to young babies of all ages on the day with child-friendly activities. Clear a space and fill it with playmats, rugs and cushions for baby and her friends to play, and choose simple, inexpensive activities such as sensory boxes, ball pits, finger painting and playdough to keep them entertained while you enjoy a slice of cake and a glass of fizz! The key to hosting the perfect party is those thoughtful, finer details, so how about some party bags or favours? Bubbles, books and crayons are perfect for toddlers, while something cute – such as bibs, hats, socks or miniature teddy bears – are sure to get the seal of approval from parents!

i I’m Neev, broadcaster and Kiss FM DJ, and proud mum to Genevieve with another little one on the way – welcome to my new monthly column! I’m so excited to finally be able to share my news with the world; I never anticipated how quickly we would fall pregnant second-time round after a threeyear battle trying for our first. This pregnancy has been very different; in some ways easier and less terrifying, but then so much more challenging. Looking after my toddler, whilst working full-time – coupled with awful morning sickness – has been really tough! Now that I’m into my second trimester I’ve been really focused on my diet because I know how much of an impact that can have on my overall wellbeing. Five months in and my body is changing so rapidly. My bump feels like this huge torpedo and my skin has been plagued with itchiness and stretchy pains, but I think I’ve found a cure in the Mama Mio range; I’ve been religiously using the Tummy Rub Butter, The Tummy Rub Oil and Pregnancy Boob Tube. My face is also suffering a bit with a red rash all over my cheeks and forehead, so its Gorgeous Glow Balancing Facial Wash has been a bit of a saviour. Because of my job, I’m in full make-up most days and those pesky pregnancy spots have been causing me so much grief. However, I think I’ve cracked a way to mask them; I’ve been using Benefit POREfessional followed by MAC Cosmetic’s Studio Fix 24hour Smooth Wear Concealer, topped off by Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation – it evens the skin tone so that pregnancy glow can really shine!

Katie had a doula at her first birth and found it to be an empowering experience
Just doula it
ROYAL AUTHOR Katie Nicholl E XPL AIN S WHY M EGHAN MAR KLE MAY WANT A DOU L A BY H ER SIDE he ‘Meghan effect’ is the biggest trend since – well – the ‘Kate effect’, so when it was reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had chosen to use a doula for the eagerly anticipated birth of their baby, the subject matter went global. For those unfamiliar with the term, a doula (pronounced ‘doola’) is a Greek word meaning ‘caregiver’ or ‘woman servant’. While a midwife is a trained medical professional whose job is to give medical advice to women in labour, doulas don’t perform a medical service. Instead their role is to offer emotional and practical support to a woman or couple before, during and after the birth. According to Doula UK, the non-profit association of doulas in the UK, there’s evidence that having a doula can reduce the risk of an instrumental birth, shorten labour and increase the likelihood of successfully establishing breastfeeding. And while they’re not a new phenomenon, doulas are more popular than ever. Londonbased doula and active birth and yoga birth specialist Jill Benjoya Miller says: “I’ve seen the popularity of doulas increase steadily over the last 20 years but a doula is nothing new. Women have always supported their sisters, mothers, daughters, friends in labour but the name doula is relatively new. “They’re popular because women want to be supported during childbirth and beyond. There are many wonderful NHS midwives and doctors, but hospital labour wards are busy and women often tell me they feel rushed. They rarely see the same person
T
twice at appointments and receive conflicting information from different medics, leaving them feeling anxious about the labour. After birth, they often feel a lack of support when they’re recovering and working out how to feed and care for their babies. Doulas aren’t medical attendants but they are skilled carers.” Given the secrecy around the royal birth it’s unlikely we’ll ever find out whether Meghan and Harry have actually hired a doula. Anyone present at the birth will have to sign an extensive NDA, but I hope the royal couple have chosen to break with tradition. While royal births are traditionally run by a team
in the water within two hours of us arriving at the hospital. I had no drugs, no tearing, no stitches, and my husband and I both say it was one of the most empowering moments of our life. I sang and smiled throughout the contractions (despite the pain) according to Jill. Our son George’s birth was very different. His was a 23-hour labour that ended with an epidural and thankfully, a natural delivery. I often wonder if, had we had a doula, the experience might have been easier. Having had such a good experience previously, we thought we’d be in for another easy birth. I was a week early, just as I’d been with Matilda. We’d planned another water birth, but my contractions just didn’t start. Having been diagnosed with strep B, I was administered antibiotics every few hours and was anxious from the outset. After many hours in labour, I was exhausted and finally agreed to an epidural. More likely than not, the outcome would have been the same had Jill been with us, but I think she would have taken some of the pressure off my husband and I and given us both some much needed support and a break. The whole experience was exhausting. Doulas support you emotionally, giving you strength when yours (and your partner’s) has run out. They’re a voice when you’ve lost yours through pain, exhaustion or both. Of course Harry and Meghan will have the best doctors in the country, but I hope they do have a doula present and that their experience is joyful, empowering and one they will remember for all the right reasons.

of experts (the Duchess of Cambridge had a medical team of more than 20 for the delivery of Prince George) a doula is in keeping with Meghan’s holistic approach to life. The California-born duchess is a fan of yoga and meditation, continuing to practise both during her pregnancy. She’s also been having acupuncture throughout her pregnancy. And while some may think of a doula as a hippy, new-age thing, I’d urge any expectant mother to consider hiring one. I’ve given birth with and without a doula and the experiences were completely different. I felt more supported and much calmer when we had Jill at our first birth. Our daughter’s delivery was wonderfully calm and surprisingly quick for a first time labour. Matilda was born

“I’ve just found out I’m pregnant. How will pregnancy hormones affect my body?”
A
fter conception, your body undergoes dramatic internal changes, all triggered and controlled by the production of key hormones. You may even experience overwhelming exhaustion in early pregnancy because of the high levels of hormones and physical changes. Here are the most important pregnancy hormones, what they do and how they may make you feel:
HUMAN CHORIONIC GONADOTROPHIN (HCG) Straight after conception, hCG is produced in large quantities by the developing placenta. It’s thought to be responsible for earlypregnancy nausea, but is also vital for a successful pregnancy, as it triggers the release of other essential hormones.
of your breasts and uterus, and softens the collagen fibres in your connective tissue so ligaments become more flexible.
CORTISOL AND ACTH PROGESTERONE This hormone has a relaxing effect on so many parts of your body, including your brain, where it induces feelings of wellbeing. It relaxes the blood vessels in the digestive and urinary tracts to aid increased blood flow. Muscles, tendons and ligaments become more elastic too, so that the uterus can expand. It also prepares the birth canal, while preventing the uterus from contracting until baby’s ready.
HUMAN PLACENTAL LACTOGEN (HPL) HPL accounts for 10 per cent of the placenta’s protein production, transfers nutrients and prepares breasts for milk production.

OESTROGEN This hormone boosts the flow of blood to the body’s organs, giving you the ‘glow’ of the second and third trimester. In the early stages, oestrogen helps to thicken the lining of the uterus for successful implantation. It also promotes the development

The end of the first trimester sees an increase in this hormone’s production, which helps your baby’s lungs to develop.

OXYTOCIN Levels of oxytocin rise during the first stage of labour, causing the uterus to contract. As the birth canal widens, more is produced to stimulate stronger contractions. After childbirth, it helps your uterus contract.

f you’re wondering when on earth that elusive pregnancy glow is going to turn up, you’re not alone. Growing a baby can take its toll on your skin and, thanks to the hormones rushing through your body, you might end up reliving your teenage years battling spots or entering a whole new world of pigmentation. Of course, you want to look after your skin during pregnancy, but, as is the case with food and drink, there are certain skincare ingredients and treatments that get the thumbs down over the next nine months.
I
WHAT SHOULD I AVOID? “First and foremost, retinol is a big no-no and should be avoided by anyone who is pregnant
found in acne and spot treatments, as well as exfoliators. “Again, in small doses and in topical treatments, this is generally believed to be OK,” explains Dr Denning. “But, my view is that if there’s no acute need, then it’s better to avoid during pregnancy.” If you’re planning a relaxing massage with essential oils, make sure you do your research first. “Essential oils are often a go-to for women who are looking for natural benefits,” says Dr Denning, “but it’s important to realise that not all oils are good for pregnancy. For instance, rosemary can increase blood pressure and high concentrations of clove, clary sage, cinnamon and rosemary could induce contractions. The good thing is that
SKIN IS MORE SENSITIVE DURING PREGNANCY, SO LOOK FOR GENTLE PRODUCTS TO DO THE JOB or breastfeeding,” explains expert facialist Kate Kerr (katekerrlondon.co.uk). Retinol, retinyl palmitate and retinoic acid (all containing vitamin A derivatives) can be found in many anti-ageing skincare products, so it’s time to start checking the label on your favourite serums and creams. Dr Aarti Denning, a leading medical aesthetic doctor (reverse-time.com) and private GP, says “Some studies have shown that high doses of vitamin A and Retin-A during pregnancy can be harmful to an unborn child, and although the amount of retinol that gets absorbed through the skin with topical treatments is minimal, we don’t want to take that risk.” Another skincare ingredient it is recommended to avoid is salicylic acid – often

camomile, ylang ylang and lavender are all considered safe after the first trimester.” Can’t live without your faux glow? Then think about switching to a DHA-free tanner during pregnancy. Because there are no studies on whether using DHA is safe while pregnancy, it’s recommended to avoid if you can. WHAT SHOULD I USE? If the thought of ditching your anti-ageing creams and serums for a whole nine months brings you out in a cold sweat, don’t panic! There are some really effective alternatives to retinol that are still safe to use while pregnant,
such as vitamin C and peptides. “Continuing to use skincare products loaded with antioxidants and skin-repairing ingredients is highly recommended,” says Dr Denning. “Just be sure to check with your doctor or midwife and follow their advice.” Thanks to those pregnancy hormones, pigmentation is a common concern – in particular melasma, often referred to as ‘the mask of pregnancy’. “This can appear as deep patches, commonly around the under-eye are or chin,” explains Kate Kerr. “It’s activated by the sun, so I advise my clients to be vigilant with SPF use throughout pregnancy to limit the development and appearance.” Dr Denning agrees; “The most important skincare

WHAT ABOUT COSMETIC TREATMENTS?
It always pays to be overly cautious with your skincare during pregnancy and Dr Denning has this advice. “If you’re doubtful about a product or ingredient, it’s best not to use it. You can always make a list of the beauty and skincare products you use and review them with your midwife or your doctor. There are many skincare products that are 100 per cent fine to use while pregnant, so you can still look after your skin as well as your baby throughout your pregnancy.”
If you’re a fan of Botox and fillers, it’s advised to give these a rest during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you’re desperate for a safe way to boost your complexion, Dr Denning has a suggestion. “One of my most popular treatments for clients during pregnancy, is micro needling. THIS ISSUE WE ASK:
I’VE HEARD BREASTFEEDING WILL HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT, IS THAT TRUE?
Y
ou often see ‘breastfeeding helps you lose weight’ touted as a benefit to breastfeeding but is it true? The good news is that research shows that breastfeeding mums do lose a little more weight compared to bottle-feeding mothers. Breastfeeding is thought to use around 500 calories a day, so this can help you gradually lose some of the weight you naturally put on during pregnancy. However, the weight loss is usually not drastic. Most research finds a difference of a couple of kilos or so, rather than several dress sizes! Unfortunately, not everyone loses weight while breastfeeding. Some women find that in response to their body using more calories, their metabolism appears to slow down as mother nature protects how much energy they’re using – clever in a way, yet frustrating if you’re eyeing up your favourite jeans. Others find that their hunger naturally increases, so they end up eating more, or snacking whilst they’re feeding or during the night feeds (guilty as charged). Some women find that they seem to hold onto a little pregnancy weight whilst breastfeeding, which then seems to disappear once they stop breastfeeding.

No one knows why. It might be hormonal, or it might be that they make subtle changes to their lifestyle once their baby’s a bit older. This doesn’t mean that stopping breastfeeding would make a big difference to your weight though. We know that sleep deprivation can cause a person to hold onto extra pounds, and new mothers are one of the most sleep-deprived groups out there! Research shows that how you feed your baby doesn’t have any real impact on how they sleep, so many mums find that it’s not until their baby is a little older, sleeping more, and they generally have more time and will to eat healthily and be more active, that the weight starts to drop. Some women will find it a struggle to keep on enough weight when breastfeeding. Although many may be envious, this can leave you feeling very run down. One tip is to try to plan your day’s food ahead to make sure you have lots of nutrient and energy-dense snacks that you can eat easily during the day, preferably one handed. Professor Amy Brown is the author of The Positive Breastfeeding Book, (£14.99, Pinter & Martin Ltd) which is available now

IF YOU DO WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT • It’s fine to lose weight sensibly, at a rate of around 1kg a week, by eating a nutrient-dense diet. Don’t cut down too much though, as your body will prioritise making milk, leaving you feeling drained if you’re not eating enough for you both. • Unless you’ve been medically advised to do so, it’s unwise to rely on mealreplacement supplements. Even if it doesn’t affect your milk supply it’ll most likely make you feel awful when you’re already overstretched. • However you feel about your weight, eating well will help you feel your best. Try to plan ahead. This is one way your partner can help out – by preparing you healthy meals, which indirectly feeds the baby! • Be kind to yourself. Your body just grew a new human and now you’re keeping her alive with your breasts! That’s kind of remarkable and something that we should celebrate.

he amount of stuff a new baby needs is almost endless. From a vast stockpile of nappies to mammoth collection of muslins, babies come with an eye-watering list of essentials. And along with the obvious basics, stocking up on a selection of aromatherapy essential oils (extracted plant aromas thought to have wellbeing benefits), may help to battle newborn gripes like colic and eczema flare ups, ward off the sniffles and could even encourage your child to get into a good sleep routine. Thanks to their plentiful medicinal benefits, essential oils have been used for centuries, and according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, once your child is three months old, you can use a variety of essential oils safely. Here’s how to harness their natural aromatherapy powers to boost your little one’s wellbeing.
T
IMPROVE YOUR BABY’S SLEEP ROUTINE Establishing a good sleep routine results in a calmer and happier bub, and it’s only around three months that your baby will start to show signs of a regular pattern. Work with his natural rhythm, putting him down in his cot when you know he’ll be starting to get sleepy, and use chamomile and lavender essential oils as part of his bedtime routine. ‘Add two drops of lavender and one of chamomile (German or Roman) each into 50ml of a lovely gentle carrier oil, such as organic cold pressed sunflower seed and massage the mixture gently into her feet. This act of massage is very calming and soothing for your child,’ says mum, clinical aromatherapist and founder of organic skincare brand, LJ Natural, Lisa Johnson (lj-natural.com).

SOOTHE COLIC SYMPTOMS If your little one’s suffering colicky symptoms such as long and unexplained crying sessions and is difficult to settle, sweet orange and lavender oils could help to alleviate symptoms. ‘Mix two drops of each into 50ml of sunflower seed carrier oil. Very gently massage into the tummy in a clockwise direction to calm a colicky baby. These oils aid digestion and keep the bowels working efficiently,’ explains Lisa.

CALM DOWN SKIN WOES Eczema, a common inflammatory condition that tends to run in families with a history of allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever, affects one in five children and symptoms usually show up before a child reaches their first birthday. Treat dry, itchy and inflamed skin with nurturing essential oils to give skin that extra boost of moisture it needs. ‘Use a blend of organic cold-pressed sunflower seed oil as it’s high in skin-soothing vitamin E with organic avocado oil, and add one drop of lavender and one of chamomile and use this in her bath to help relieve symptoms,’ shares Lisa.
BEAT SNIFFLES Children may catch eight or more colds a year, according to the NHS, because their immune system isn’t yet primed to fight off bacteria and viruses. But keeping a stash of essential oils in your medicine cabinet could help to knock pesky symptoms down a few notches. ‘If your baby’s suffering the sniffles, use two drops of eucalyptus, one of lemon and one of lavender in your 50ml of base oils, massage the oil into her feet and the back and chest at bedtime to help clear away any congestion,’ says Lisa.

PREGNANCY
TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT
STRETCH MARKS
This issue, the sisters and founders of the Bump Class discuss this skin-deep issue or many, the idea of getting stretch marks in pregnancy is worse than the prospect of cellulite. But unfortunately, 90 per cent of us get them in pregnancy so it’s worth understanding what causes them and whether we can prevent or cure them.
F
WHY DO WE GET STRETCH MARKS? Underneath the top layer of our skin, the epidermis, lies a second layer, the dermis, which contains bundles of collagen. When our skin is stretched rapidly, like in pregnancy, that stretch pulls on those collagen bundles in the dermis, causing them to tear away from each other, leaving angry stretch marks.
WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE MORE PRONE TO THEM? Ultimately it’s all about our skin. Those of us who have genetically thick skin are less likely to get stretch marks, whereas those of us who have thinner skin with less elasticity are more likely to damage those collagen bundles.
PHOTOGRAPHY: HELENE SANDBERG
ARE THEY PREVENTABLE? Whether or not you get stretch marks is largely determined by your genetics. That said, because stretch marks appear when skin is stretched quickly, the size of your bump will play a big part in whether or not you end up with them. Most of us don’t have much control over the size of our babies, but maintaining a healthy diet while continuing to exercise will keep your muscles strong and supportive of your bump. Moisturising every day will not prevent stretch marks, but there’s no harm in doing so, and at the very
least it’ll allow you to spend time celebrating the fact you’re growing a new life inside you.
CAN I GET RID OF THEM? Dermatologists universally agree that it’s impossible to completely get rid of stretch marks but you might be able to improve their appearance. Firstly, remember that the angry red marks will fade into silvery lines, even without moisturising thanks to ours bodies’ natural recovery. There’s some evidence that retinol creams might improve the appearance of stretch marks because it builds collagen, helping those damaged bundles in the dermis to become thicker and healthier. Remember though that you shouldn’t use retinol creams in pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding.
Probably the most effective treatment is laser, which although it won’t get rid of stretch marks entirely, has a good chance of reducing them by 50-75 per cent. The laser delivers pulses of energy into the skin and, even though it’s not harming you, it tricks your cells into thinking they’re injured. This triggers your body’s natural healing process, releasing the chemicals needed to create new collagen in that area. But laser isn’t a quick fix – you’ll need multiple sessions, patience and money; plus there’s no guarantee that you’ll think the result was worth it. There’s a huge amount of pressure these days to have a perfect body. But what is a perfect body? We should think of stretch marks as a badge of honour, a sign that our bodies have given us life’s greatest gift, a child.

GIVE YOU R BABY ’S WE ANING DIE T A BOOST BY PACKING IN ANTIOXIDANT FOODS, SAYS N UTRITIONIST Louise Pyne e all know the importance of a healthy diet for our children, and while you might have already heard of macronutrients (carbohydrates, fat and protein) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), have you ever heard the term ‘mesonutrients’? Meso, which translates as ‘inside’ in the Greek language refers to the health-boosting goodies or antioxidants within foods and how to get the most out of these active compounds. Here we reveal the secret foodie weapons that could help to boost your baby’s weaning diet, and how you can get the most out of each ingredient.
W
There are plenty of ways to help stimulate your baby’s brain health. From chatting to her, to playing sensory games, promoting cognitive growth is an important step during
QUERCETIN No matter the season, babies pick up an average of eight colds a year. They’re born with an immature immune system and are susceptible to bacteria, viruses and infectious illnesses while their immunity develops. A healthy diet is one of the best ways to strengthen your bub’s defences against pesky coughs and colds, and packing your child’s weaning diet with the antioxidant quercetin can help to fend off bugs. They say an apple day keeps the doctor way, and that’s because the everyday fruit is a source of the antioxidant which plays a role in dampening down inflammation. How to use: Steam one apple until soft. Blend together the apple with one ripe avocado cut into chunks until smooth. Portion out into ice cubes and freeze until needed.
NO MATTER THE SEASON, BABIES PICK UP AN AVERAGE OF EIGHT COLDS A YEAR
A baby’s skin is very delicate and it’s important to treat it with care. Aside from dressing her in natural fabrics, using chemical-free laundry liquid and organic bath care products, her weaning diet can help to protect her sensitive skin. Tomatoes are a must-have food to include in the weaning diet. They’re crammed full of lycopene, an antioxidant that helps to protects your bubba’s skin against sunburn and the harmful effects of UV light (which is a risk factor even when it’s cloudy outside). Cooking tomatoes are one of the best sources to harness the mesonutrient benefits – this is because the antioxidant is released from the tomato fibres when heated. In fact, one study showed that lycopene was absorbed 2.5 times

the first year of her development. Weaning also presents a great opportunity to maximise her grey matter, and filling her weaning diet with vibrant-hued super fruits like blueberries can give her brain an extra boost. You can make sure your child ingests more of the mesonutrients contained in blueberries by ensuring that she eats the skin of the fruit. This is because the skin contains a high concentration of antioxidant anthocyanins, which play a role in brain health. It’s thought that protective benefits of the antioxidants are a result of improving blood flow to the

Carrots are a good source of vitamin A, meaning that servings of the veg will boost your baby’s respiratory health
when eaten, betacarotene gets converted into vitamin A, a nutrient associated with boosting respiratory health. If your child suffers breathing disorder like asthma or bronchitis, betacarotene-rich foods like carrots can help fight the condition. One study showed that low levels of vitamin A was more common in children that suffered asthma and it’s thought that the antioxidant can help to plan a crucial role against airway inflammation, keeping the respiratory system healthy so that asthma symptoms are minimised. How to use: Vitamin A foods like carrots are best consumed with vitamin C and E sources, such as broccoli and spinach, in order to maximise the mesonutrients potential. Steam each vegetable until soft and then purée.
LUTEIN From six months, your baby’s depth perception is improving and you’ll notice she grabs objects within arm’s reach, and by the time she reaches 11 to 12 months, her vision is almost as clear as an adult’s. Ensuring she gets enough of the antioxidant lutein in her diet can help to maintain her improving vision. The nutrient, which is rich in yellow foods like sweetcorn, protects against harmful free radicals and keeps components of the eye, such as the retina, healthy. How to use: Make a pasta sauce with puréed sweetcorn, butternut squash and cheese – adding a dash of water to help create a smooth consistency.

An ideal picnic or packed lunch dish.
• handful of basil, torn • 60g feta, cubed FOR THE SAUCE
• 50g mayonnaise • 50g full-fat natural yoghurt • ¼tsp sweet paprika • ¼tsp freshly ground black pepper
INGREDIENTS
• 250g uncooked, medium-size pasta, in a variety of shapes • 2 slices of bread to make toasted breadcrumbs • 2 tbsp butter; melted • 6 slices bacon cooked crisp • 1 head iceberg lettuce, chopped • ½ red pepper, deseeded and finely chopped • 100g red and yellow cherry tomatoes, halved • 100g frozen peas, cooked
METHOD
Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Reserve a little pasta water and drain the pasta. While the pasta cooks, cook the bacon, chop the lettuce, halve the tomatoes, chop the red pepper and cook the peas, then make the breadcrumbs. To make the breadcrumbs, tear the bread apart into smaller chunks and place in a food
processor. Process the bread until it’s in smallmedium sized crumbs. Place the breadcrumbs into a medium bowl and add the melted butter. Mix together until the butter is well incorporated. Toast in the oven at 200°C for 10-15 minutes until toasted to your liking. To make the sauce, a medium mixing bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, paprika, and black pepper; set aside. In a large bowl, combine the drained pasta, half the breadcrumbs, half the crispy bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and sauce. Toss to mix and refrigerate in an airtight container until ready to serve. To serve, if needed add the reserved pasta water to loosen the salad. Sprinkle with reserved breadcrumbs, bacon, the torn basil and feta cubes and season with salt and pepper to taste.

We’re working with PEG PEREGO to bring you an authentic guide to true Italian life
n our last issue we took a tour to Milan with Peg Perego, the home city of the Italian nursery brand and this month we’ve been given the inside scoop on Italy’s undiscovered holiday destinations…
FOR BEACH BABES…
Sestri Levante, Liguria
Once home to Hans Christen Anderson, sitting pretty on the peninsula half-way between Genoa and La Spezia lies one of Liguria’s hidden gems, Sestri Levante – the ‘town of two seas’. With its sweet pastel buildings, silver shores and refined island atmosphere, this Italian family seaside resort provides an uncrowded alternative to Cinque Terre.
FOR LAKE LOVERS…
Lake Iseo, Lombardy
Lake Iseo is smaller than Lake Como but its lesser known status means it’s peaceful and undisturbed by tourists. Offering tonnes of natural beauty, its deep blue lake and lush green mountains make this an unsung gem of northern Italy. While it’s the ideal location for rambling in the hills, Lake Iseo has its share of places to explore nearby too including the cities of Brescia and Bergamo and the Franciacorta wine region.
FOR RIVIERA BEAUTY…
PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK
Ravello, Amalfi Coast
Skip the usual sea towns of Amalfi and Positano and head to Ravello, packed full of beauty, history and magic. Wander the medieval streets, terraces, elegant gardens of this charming hilltop town nestled some 1,200ft above the Mediterranean, affording it the most spectacular views found on the Neapolitan Riviera. With its air of restrained glamour, abundance of good Italian food and lure of tranquillity, it’s a dream destination. Next issue, we’ll be revealing all about the Italian capital, Rome.
GREEK ODYSSEY
Gennadi Grand Resort, the newest five-star hotel on Rhodes, is reopening on 27 April for its first full season. Overlooking one of the finest beaches on the island, the hotel – which debuted last year – has been lovingly landscaped by eco-architects. It has 288 rooms with private pools, restaurants serving up delicious Greek fare, and an in-house spa – the mum-to-be massage treatment is ideal for a babymoon. And, if you have a tot in tow, you can make use of the babysitting service. gennadigrandresort.com

suitcase around Gatwick Airport. Before booking, my sister and I wondered whether a 12-hour flight to Mauritius was too much for a bouncy two year old. But with British Airways flying direct to the island and a longing for some winter sun, we decided to take the risk. Fortunately, this paid off, as Ruby was an angel – albeit a sick-covered one, having projectile vomited just before landing, meaning she had to style out airport security in her finest pink PJs. The other side saw a one-hour transfer to an area called Albion on the island’s west coast. Delirious with jet lagged, our arrival at Club Med’s La Plantation d’Albion was like a warm hug, only with added arrival champagne. A nippy buggy ride to our well-appointed room meant that the holiday had started! On my first circuit of the grounds, I was bowled over by the natural beauty of this tropical resort. Nestled amid banana trees, anthuriums and palm trees there are birds aplenty, all chirping sweetly. I felt my stresses melt away. The resort has two beaches and two pools, and from the get-go Ruby was a pool girl. Toddling about in her float suit, she spent most of her time jumping in and out of the water, pausing only to cool off with a fruit kebab. It became the hub for new friends, too. It was lovely to see kids of a similar age playing together and chatting in different languages. The child-friendly nature is well
demonstrated through the kids’ club. With age-appropriate groups, we signed Ruby up for a couple of afternoon sessions with Petit Club Med. A trip highlight was coming to collect her and finding her covered in face paint from head to toe, whereupon she introduced us to her favourite childcare staff; Hans – who got an enthusiastic high five – and Sarah, who kindly showered Ruby off, scooping a rare cuddle from her on departure. With afternoons taken care of, Kathryn and I got to truly relax, often catching rays on Zen Zone’s loungers with a Chill on the Beach cocktail. This secluded adults-only area, with endless Indian Ocean views, was a slice of heaven. And the gourmet greatness continued at the restaurant’s mind-blowing buffet. With Asian and Italian dishes sitting alongside Mauritian delicacies, even foodie’s wouldn’t tire of it. Kids are well catered for too: tearing Ruby away from the ice cream station was no easy feat. I can safely say that Club Med has changed my perception of all-inclusive holidays. In fact, I now believe this is the best way to travel with youngsters; the days of flavourless canteen-style food, rigid kids’ clubs and plastic jugs of sangria are a million miles from Club Med’s premium offering. And it’s left a lasting impression on Ruby too. Three months on, she still asks about returning to ’Ritius daily – the girl’s got taste. EDUCATION
MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE
Mat thew Bryan, H E ADMASTER OF LONGACR E SCH OOL IN SHAM LEY GR EEN , SU R R EY SHAR E S HIS TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING A N U R SERY often expensive, but in the right setting it’s a priceless investment; the wrong places will feel like little more than money spinners. Nurseries should offer safe outdoor spaces so little ones can play, learn and explore
ursery, crèche, kindergarten – no matter what the language, it’s a huge step. To friends, family and the outside world, a child starting at a nursery might seem like a natural first step in education, a necessary move to allow parents to return to work, a means of enabling young children to get used to playing with others. It all looks so straightforward. When it’s you and your child though, the stakes all of a sudden seem much higher. Ask yourself the following questions and you’ll make the right choice:
N
Does this nursery work for you? Nurseries are typically full-time, or term-time only. Hours could be 7.30am until 6pm, or something closer to a school day, particularly if affiliated with a school. Ask how the rooms work with rests and sleeps, and whether they have golden rules so that you can understand what behaviours are expected. Most nurseries will stipulate a minimum number of sessions – typically half-days. Some nurseries will take babies and young toddlers; others set a higher threshold. Even with the government’s ‘free’ nursery hours, parents can be presented with

a considerable bill. Getting the sums right is important. Overall, understanding what you need from a nursery in terms of logistics means that you can use websites to narrow your search and only visit the ones which will work for your work or family life. Does this nursery work for your child? Looking after babies, toddlers and preschool children is physically and emotionally demanding. It’s also one of the most wonderful, rewarding and far-reaching professions. The best nurseries will offer taster days, give you flexibility to start slow and build up the sessions, treat your child like an individual rather than simply make assumptions based on age, feel like the first steps in education rather than babysitting and show you what they’re really like when you visit, rather than putting on a show for prospective parents. Nursery education is
What can this nursery offer beyond what is possible at home? A nursery should offer facilities, resources and expertise that are simply impossible to replicate at home. Safe outdoor space, toys galore, an ever-evolving supply of costumes for dressing up and imaginative play, lots of art, mud kitchens, Forest School, slides, dens, water – the list is endless. Just as crucial as this are the other children with whom to play: kids have to learn how to do things for themselves and with each other. Nurseries attached to schools might have specialist lessons in music and PE. Less obvious than the list of available activities is the understanding of why those activities are educationally significant. We might have heard of ‘messy play’ – indeed we might dread the thought of it in our own kitchens – but a professional will be able to point to motor skills, sensory development and proprioception to show why that can of shaving foam is essential to your child’s physical and emotional development. How will you know what your child has been up to? Nurseries will offer daily records, often available online, with photographs and snapshots recorded of what children have done and said. The best nursery teachers have a magical ability to look after children and also keep an evidence trail, giving you a fascinating window into aspects of your child’s character that you might not see at home. They’ll quickly build a bond with children, good enough to understand their non-verbal cues and guide children to ensure that their lives are joyful and challenging, with celebrations of success and encouragement to keep learning. The Organic Babies range is great for little ones who suffer with dry, sensitive skin or eczema Organic Babies product range, from £8.50, greenpeople.co.uk
Daughter Sandra inspired Charlotte to launch Green People
What motivated you to set up your brand, Green People? My daughter Sandra, then two years old and plagued with eczema, was my inspiration to start Green People. I began searching for products that didn’t contain harsh chemicals, but discovered that despite various claims, there weren’t any truly natural and organic products on the market. This led me on an exciting journey of researching and formulating organic, natural products that would help everyone suffering with skin sensitivities. Our Organic Babies range was the first we launched, and we’re so proud to have been able to help children with sensitive and eczema-prone skin for more than 20 years. How do you keep so passionate being in the business this long? I’m passionate about all the latest developments in new scientifically-proven actives and plant stem cell technology. My aim is to constantly update and improve our organic offering as new and exciting ingredients become available. Our ranges show that it’s possible to

The business owner talks skincare, the importance of giving back and precious downtime with her family
You work with a lot of charities, why is this so important to you? I’m a firm believer that every business should give back and we proudly donate 10 per cent of our profits to a variety of charities, including Chestnut Tree House, The Marine Conservation Society and Penny Brohn Cancer Care. This has always been an integral part of my business plan and I hope that it inspires social responsibility across the industry.
achieve visible results without unnecessary chemicals. How do you juggle family life with running a business? My children are older now, so the balance is easier, but I spend lots of time with my family, both in the UK and Denmark. Downtime for me now is cooking with my son Adam, a doctor, and my daughter Sandra, an artist who’s still inspiring new products, today. Both are brilliant cooks and more importantly, wine connoisseurs! With such a range of products, do you have a personal favourite? It’s a difficult choice so can I pick two?! Our Age Defy+ Cell Enrich Facial Oil and Age Defy+ Hydrate & Renew
Serum are the perfect pair for instant illumination. I love their versatility. I simply use more oil in the winter to nourish my skin and more serum in the summer when my skin’s less dry. They also make perfect under make-up primers, holding it in place all day long – great for busy mums! For babies, there’s nothing quite like our Organic Babies Soothing Baby Salve, which is a miracle worker for sensitive, eczema-prone skin. It can be used on baby’s face, Keeping it natural, Green People use ethically sourced ingredients
Are there any exciting plans for the business in 2019? 2019 promises to be a standout year for us, with lots of new product launches around the corner! We’ve completely reformulated our suncare range to make our creams ultra smooth and easy to apply, while still being suitable for sensitive, eczema-prone skin. We’re also excited about our new ecofriendly packaging, in line with our pledge to switch to recycled or renewably-sourced material. greenpeople.co.uk
