When I moved to London four years ago I pledged to myself that I would walk as much as I possibly could. And I do. A day rarely goes by when I haven’t hit the 10,000 step milestone and I love being on foot; it doesn’t cost a penny, it’s good for you and I can be smug about having no emission or pollution guilt for my daily commute. But it’s not easy lightening your carbon footprint – especially when babies come with so much, well, stuff. Putting together our eco issue, it only felt right to talk to mum-of-two and co-founder of sustainable brand Kit + Kin, Emma Bunton. She gives her top tips on being that little bit greener, and tells us about her brand’s commitment to the planet on page 98. One thing parents can do, is get smarter with their shopping. There are so many clever pieces that double up, offering longevity of use, Martha Alexander rounds up her favourite multifunctional finds for parents and babies that make minimalist intentions that much more doable. Find all the dual-purpose inspiration you need on page 58. Now we’ve had the first tantalising glimmer of sunshine, upcoming holidays are a hot topic at Baby HQ. From protecting local wildlife to

TIPS: WHY ORGANIC IS BEST • Better for their skin Babies and toddlers have sensitive skin, which is why going organic is best. Since sustainable materials aren’t made with chemicals they’re kinder and gentler. • Longer lasting Organic materials have resilient fibres as they’ve not been damaged by chemicals during the manufacturing process. This is ideal as organic fabrics will stay softer for much longer than treated materials. • Environmentally friendly Not only are organic materials kinder to a little one’s skin, but they’re also kinder to the planet. Since they’re not treated with harmful chemicals there is little environmental pollution from growing and using sustainable fabrics.

INTERVIEW
The Ennis-Hill children were ne er out of this heffiel brand’s rompers as babies! Jersey cotton romper £18, bearandbabe.com
Jessica and Andy’s perfect date night always includes a romantic dinn er
Since retirement, Jessica has made a conscious effort to spend as much time as possible with the kids
MY ESSENTIALS Firstly, tell us about your new fitness app, Jennis. The app is designed to help women stay fit and healthy during and after pregnancy, by showing them which exercises they should be doing, how to do them, what’s safe, and what the benefits are. I had two very different journeys back to fitness after having my two kids [Reggie, four, and Olivia, 19 months] – with my first, I went straight back into full-time training for the Olympics, but with my second I’d already retired, so I just wanted to feel normal again. The app’s really about putting all the knowledge I gained from my pregnancies in one place. My amazing physio has helped me put together some great exercises and advice, and now I just can’t wait for it to be launched! How did your exercise regime change during pregnancy? I wasn’t sure what exactly I was allowed to do when I first got pregnant, but I was lucky in that
DAME JESSICA ENNIS-HILL
We talk to the Olympic champion and mother-of-two about her new app, pregnancy exercise and parenthood I could draw on a lot of guidance from my coach, my physio and doctors. So, I tried a lot of body weight exercises, running, and circuit-based workouts. To be honest, it was just so nice to be able to train purely for enjoyment, rather than working towards a competition or big event. I’d never exercised like that in my life! With the Jennis app, Jessica wants to share her pre- and postpregnancy exercise expertise with mums
You retired from athletics in 2016 – what do you like to do now to keep fit? After I had Liv [in September 2017], I decided I wasn’t going to suffer through any more hill runs, weights or circuits – I’d done enough of those! But
after a few months I realised I actually missed doing them. Now, I do a lot of what I used to do when I was training as an athlete, but obviously not at that level and not as frequently as before. Is sport a big part of your children’s lives? Liv doesn’t have a clue because she’s still so little, but Reggie was around when I was still competing, so sport’s definitely big for him. He’s a very active kid, too – he plays a bit of tennis and loves swimming. You’ve also penned a series of children’s books, Evie’s Magic Bracelet. Is storytime a big thing in your house? Storytime is massive in our house! It’s so important to read to your kids when they’re young and normalise it, so it doesn’t feel like a chore as they get older. Julia Donaldson’s stories are a big hit

INTERVIEW The Olympic athlete’s return to fitness was very different after each pregnancy
Reggie gives his mum’s book series, Evie’s Magic Bracelet, the thumbs up! Evie’s Magic Bracelet series £5.99 each, waterstones.com Reggie is superheromad at the moment, which is reflected in his bedroom!
How do you balance it all? Once I retired, I made a conscious effort to spend as much time with the kids as I could. But equally, I want them to see me working and doing other things outside the house as well. It is hard, but it’s just about getting that balance where you’re comfortable. I’m lucky that I can be flexible work-wise, but the kids will always come first. You feel mum guilt some of the time, but being a parent is the most incredible experience, and I think I’d definitely feel very lost if I’d retired and not had children.
34 | baby-magazine.co.uk
What do their rooms look like? Reggie’s quite into superheroes, so he has lots of Superman and Spiderman pictures and bedding. Liv’s room is soft pink with flamingo curtains, and little swans on the shelves. I love her room because I decorated it exactly as I’d hoped I could when I had a daughter! I got a few ornamental pieces from Bobby Rabbit; it has beautiful furniture and toys. Jessica lives in Sheffield with husband Andy and kids Reggie and Olivia
If you’ve got time on your own, what do you like to do? I switch off completely. If I had a whole day to myself, I’d love to spend a few hours at a spa. Even just an early night would be nice! And what about date night with your husband, Andy? We both really enjoy cooking, so sometimes we make a special meal at home together. We like going out in Sheffield, too, especially if there’s a new restaurant popping up. It’s great to just sit and enjoy a nice long meal without having to rush. What’s the best thing about being a mum? I love that every day’s so different. And everything changes an instant; one minute they’re elated, the next they’re crying hysterically over something totally random! Jessica Ennis-Hill’s app, Jennis, launches on 10 June and will be available at £9.99 on iOS and Android. jennisfitness.com

BRAD THE DAD
Formerly the archetypal eligible bachelor, actor Bradley Cooper has eased into the fatherhood role effortlessly, says Simone Lee s an actor, Bradley Cooper has made a substantial career out of comedy, drama and action-hero genres, yet it has always appeared to be at the expense of a personal life that had ebbed and flowed between various stages of fulfilment and frustration. When you add in the fact the 44-year-old Pennsylvanian, in so many of his film roles, has played the conflicted, confused and, at times, tortured anti-hero, the whole set-up is perfectly at odds with the reallife version of the bustling, brimming, charismatic actor… until now. Or rather, until Cooper met Russian model Irina Shayk in 2015. At the time, the actor was still getting over his split from British model Suki Waterhouse, but he and footballer Ronaldo’s ex-girlfriend hit it off instantly. Within seven months, the pair were expecting their first child, and in March 2017 little Lea arrived. As an A-lister who, for so long, played against the conventional rules of marriage and kids, Cooper’s transition into doting dad has been dramatic and beautiful to watch. “Firstly, if I gave the impression I wasn’t trying to settle down and be a dad, I apologise,” he laughs, kicking off with a typically fresh flourish of humour and humility. “In a sense, I’m glad it took me a while to get to the point I’m at now. I mean, I wanted and yearned to have this for so many years, but you know when the person and the time is right, and this is it.” Their beautiful baby – full name Lea De Seine Shayk Cooper – will certainly have a perfectly calm yet ambitious upbringing, not so different to that of her dad. Cooper credits his late father for giving him the passion, drive and encouragement to become an actor, and you feel there is a real sense of him wanting to pass on those ideals. “Of course I want Lea to succeed in whatever she chooses to pursue, but as much as you want to push your child, you also want them to make their own decisions. Even the youngest child deserves the respect of a parent and that starts at not forcing them to do anything they don’t want to; and in the movie world I’ve seen things that have made me wonder if it’s really the youngster or the parent who wants to perform. “Outside of acting, I’ve started imagining what I want to bring to Lea and how I can help shape her life,” he continues. “I think cooking and spending time in the kitchen will be a big part of that – that’ll be a special thing to be able to do together and it really excites me.

“I like to cook every day and I get so much pleasure from it. I grew up with a great appreciation of cooking. There’s so much joy for me that comes with looking at the ingredients, preparing a dish and plating the food. It’s something extraordinarily beautiful for me… it all led me to my first job, cleaning tables at a Greek restaurant in Philadelphia when I was just 15. “My mother made this incredible roast beef and my grandmother would prepare delicious ravioli the most stunning cheesecake. Those were the kinds of dishes that inspired my love of cooking but that whole feeling of family too, and I want to give that to Lea.” With their daughter having now celebrated her second birthday, the couple are firmly moving into the next phase of parenthood, with nursery and pre-school on the horizon. It probably helps that, as parents, they come from slightly different emotional perspectives – Bradley admits to being blown away by how much starting a family changes life, while Irina has been positively outspoken that she has felt the need to retain a sense of self whilst still dedicating her time to Lea. And certainly, both subscribe to the traditional values of family, and can rely on fantastic support networks. “I think you always want to emulate all the good things from your upbringing,” says Cooper. “Mine was incredibly happy – I was the youngest and of course the most spoiled of all the kids. There are a lot of advantages to being the youngest and smallest – you can get away with a lot of stuff. “My parents would focus most of their attention and disciplinary tactics on keeping my sister in line while they allowed me to do pretty much what I wanted!” he laughs. “But there were so many positive influences – we lived right across from a movie theatre in Philadelphia and my father was a true cinephile. He turned me on to all those 1970s auteur movies. I remember seeing The Elephant Man when I was like, 12, and Apocalypse Now, Network and The Deer Hunter. I loved those movies so much, and living next to a movie theatre was utopia. “But that was about all we had – that and our imaginations. In fact I would sort of live in the fantasy of whatever the feeling was after the last movie I’d seen. “I owe it to my parents who taught me not to be superficial. It was a childhood built on simple things, and that’s how I want it to be with Lea.”

Prepare for the weaning journey by investing in Thermapen’s First Foods digital thermometer
Just right hermapen, the UK’s leading specialist thermometer brand, has launched its First Foods digital thermometer, designed to accurately check the temperature of baby’s food and milk during weaning and beyond; offering speed and convenience for parents who want to ensure that their little one’s food temperature is safe every time. Research shows that a quarter of UK parents (25 per cent) have concerns when it comes to weaning, and that as many as 5.5m have accidentally burned their little one while giving them food or milk that was too hot. The research carried out by Thermapen also found that a huge six out of 10 parents don’t know what temperature their baby’s food should be. Nearly three quarters of the parents surveyed (71 per cent) admitted they would feel less anxious if they had the right equipment to test the food accurately, and more than a fifth (22 per cent) of parents are unsure about how to test the temperature of their child’s food correctly, with some using techniques such as testing with their finger, a

It can be a really nerve-racking experience for many parents. One of my aims is to help take the pressure off and fill mums and dads with confidence when offering their babies food and make the experience enjoyable for both parents and their little ones. “My top tip would be to prepare for weaning as much as you can. It’s good to do a bit of reading in advance to build your own confidence before you start. It can also be a good idea to get equipment ready, such as plastic or bamboo bowls and spoons for baby and the Thermapen First Foods digital thermometer is also a good option to help you get the temperature of baby’s first foods right.”

’m perched on the top of a snow-covered mountain, one glove firmly between gritted teeth, the other, ferociously tapping at my phone screen as snowflakes melt on top. “Noah hasn’t eaten much, we’ll try some banana later.” One of the chalet nannies has sent a lunch update. “Yes, banana should work, if not, I’ve left a pouch of Ella’s mango yoghurt out, she likes that.” I reply. “Oh, and toast, you could always try some toast.” Champagne problems, of course. I am, after all, about to ski down to a bar for an afternoon vin chaud. Life could be worse. And given the length of this ski trip’s Things That Could Go Wrong list – in which four couples who met at NCT classes along with their respective babies are shacked up together in a catered chalet with two nannies – Noah’s blasé attitude to solids should be well, manageable. But there’s a very specific anxiety that comes with your child not eating. Particularly if said child was admitted to hospital five months ago with severe gastroenteritis, unable to keep foods or liquids down for days, her body shrinking before my eyes. To use a very 2019 term,

Joanna Ellner ANGSTS ABOUT N OAH ’S AT TITU DE TOWAR DS SOLIDS Noah’s current lack of appetite is triggering for me. It’s certainly not learned. Since we began the weaning process at six months, I’ve become Prue Leith in the kitchen, whizzing up
all manner of fibrous, proteinladen and vitamin-charged vegetable purées, and Noah did well in lapping them up. Well, sort of. Now, that vague indifference towards food has accelerated into actual repugnance. So, does that mean it’s inherited? My childhood interaction with food was somewhat chequered. I hail from the generation that was made to “sit there until it’s gone”, a command to which I came up with ever more novel ways of getting around; siphoning off slimy meatballs into my school blazer pocket perhaps not being my finest hour. Now back at home, the frivolity of prancing about on skis now
a distant memory, operation Get Food Into Noah goes up a gear. I’ve become the David Copperfield of feeding-based mind-tricks. Among my current repertoire, when faced with food refusal: swapping spoons midway through to distract her, sneakily getting a spoonful of veggie purée in when she’s expecting yoghurt, shaking my ponytail to make her laugh and quickly spooning in some food. Hardly any of it works. It’s exhausting. Then there’s the energy required to power two daily dishwasher cycles, the handful of antibacterial wipes required to pick half-chewed chunks of avocado off the floor (dish cloths simply do not cut it),
and the additional wash loads of blueberry-stained vests. It’s a lot. With Noah, I wanted to encourage a lively relationship with food from the off. And yet, her tightly-sealed mouth, nose pointed to the ceiling and I’m-quite-finishing flapping arms tell another story. I feel, in a small part of me, that ugliest of mothering feelings, jealousy – towards the mums for whom feeding is a simple joy, an intimate bonding experience, just as it had been for breastfeeding. Does Noah’s indifference mean that, at 10 months old, she no longer needs me like she once did? That’s too sad a thought to entertain. In the meantime, there’s toast.

THE REVIEW
Vicky Moore AN D NIN E-MONTH OLD DAUGHTER Poppy PUT TH E SILVER CROSS JE T TO TH E TE ST
W
ith a summer holiday booked to Turkey and a few closer-to-home trips penned in the diary, it was time for us to get a secondary stroller to ferry around my youngest daughter, Poppy, who’s nine months old. We love our Joolz HUB, but after taking it on a flight where it got bashed around in the hold, we knew we’d need something smaller that could be our go-to holiday buggy: one that takes up less boot space, is easy on public transport, and can be stowed overhead during flights.
For a lightweight stroller, the storage is impressive, with a well-sized, easy-access basket
Poppy catches some on-thego zzzs while riding in the Jet
GOOD LOOKING? The Silver Cross Jet looks really smart and sleek, and not at all plasticky like the umbrella strollers I was used to when my older kids were young. We opted for the silver colourway, which complements the black chassis and bars. I also like the silver logo accents on the chassis and the wheels. It gives it a more premium look than some of the other compact strollers on the market.
PRACTICALITY AND DRIVEABILITY I’m still quite amazed by how small the Jet is when folded away. And I love that it turns into a little suitcase, with the bumper bar doubling up as a pull-along handle. Poppy’s siblings like pulling it around, which will come in handy when we’re at the airport. It also comes with a protective cover, meaning it stays nicely folded, and doesn’t get scuffed or dirty! Because it’s so lightweight (5.9kg) it performs best on smooth surfaces. It handles
grass quite well too, but you wouldn’t want to walk miles. It took me a couple of goes with the folding, but it’s seamless once you’ve got the hang of it; it’s handy that it clips top and side in the same clasp. For a lightweight buggy, I’ve been impressed by the storage. The basket is a reasonable size and easy to access – we’ve even managed to fit three coats underneath it.
COMFORT Older sister Sophie helps out with testing the Jet
Because you can lock the wheels at the front, the suspension allows a smooth ride, keeping Poppy comfy; plus, the five-point safety harness means she’s nice and secure. Although Poppy’s a bit older, you can actually use the Jet from birth as it has a soft padded lie-flat seat. You can easily recline with onehand which is handy for on-themove snoozing – the fact that she falls asleep in it must be a good
sign! It’s certainly comfortable for pushing, and I love that it has a leatherette handle. The fully extendable ventilated UPF50+ hood will be super handy for holiday napping, plus the pull-out sun visor and viewing window means I can check on her without disturbing!
THE VERDICT For a lightweight stroller, I’m really pleased with our choice. It looks good, it’s very compact and it’ll be a real godsend when dashing around the airport. I can’t wait to take the Jet on its first flight! £275, silvercrossbaby.com

SHOPPING
mall children come with stuff. Bottles, bags, buggies, bouncers – making any minimalist intentions impossible. Having items in your arsenal that serve more than one purpose not only means more at-home space, they’re also much better for your bank balance, sanity and eco credentials, of course. Here’s our roundup of the best multifunctional items for mums, dads and babies.
S
CAR SEAT AND STROLLER A car seat that literally ‘grows’ wheels to become a stroller in mere seconds? Yes, really! The Doona is something of a wonder product. If you’re short on house space this natty little mover will come as sweet relief, as it can live in the car, or be packed away at its seat size. Meanwhile, holidays will be relatively calamityfree as you’ll have one less bulky thing to unload from the baggage carousel.
TRAVEL COTS Travelling with infants can be an absolute nightmare, let’s not pretend otherwise. However, what makes life easier is having a couple of hero products up your sleeve that can ease any fraught situation. Having a hardworking travel cot is a must. That is to say, one that does three jobs for the price of one, like the Sleep & Go travel cot (£195, Micralite). This boasts a bassinet complete with soft jersey mattress for tiny babies, a deep cot for older infants and handy little side zips which transform the structure into a playpen. Best of all, it packs down easily and quickly into a compact case.

MUSLINS These innocuous-looking squares are actually a parent’s right-hand product, especially in the first six months or so, when one is never more than a few inches away from a newborn, draped over a parent’s shoulder before burping the baby. They’ve been known to mop up all sorts, including milk, vomit, snot, tears (both mum and baby’s) and dribble. Large muslins – like those by aden + anais (from £17) or those by Etta Loves – are brilliant as coverups while breast feeding, as blankets for lazy alfresco afternoons in the park and for placing over a pram to keep the sun out on hot days. Honey Blossom’s muslins (£29.99) offer a bright and juicy palette – we can see many a mama borrowing one of these for sunbathing-related reasons while on holiday…

staple, and with good reason; she works hard! Not just a friendly face, she makes noises, feels lovely and squidgy – and is easy to chew. This giraffe encourages all sorts of sensual play and is compact enough to fit into even the most diminutive of handbags, meaning Sophie’s also the perfect travel companion.
COTBEDS The move from cot to Big Boy or Girl Bed can be daunting for both child and parents. As any mum or dad knows, a baby’s sleep is a sacred thing. Any changes in routine can make for an unsettled period of sleep regression. This is why many parents opt for a cot which transforms into a bed when an infant is ready – while the sides come off – the essential structure of the piece is the same. Also, cot beds last from birth until a child is about five years old. Many are able to continue to serve in the form of a little sofa, so you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. We love Boori’s beds – especially the luxurious Pioneer expandable cot bed (£499), while Mamas & Papas also do a fantastic range. We especially like the Atlas Pale Oak cot to toddler bed (£279). As a cot, it has three different heights, can be transformed fairly painlessly and has a neutral rustic appearance that feel’s a little more grown up. Sophie la Girafe teether £11.99, johnlewis.com
Artipoppe’s gorge baby wrap designs will make stylish wardrobe additions from birth onwards Etta Loves muslins come in a host of vibrant patterns and prints, making them fun beach -holiday essentials
WRAPS Wearing baby is a safe, effective transporting method that encourages bonding – while leaving you hands-free on the go! There are loads of wraps on the market, but we favour Artipoppe’s (from £164) because they’re 100 per cent cotton, can be used from birth and are just so beautiful. We think, long after your baby has become a child, teen and adult, you’ll be able to wear this – and remember with a touch of sentimentality, the very beginning of your son or daughter’s life.
SLEEP AID
Boori’s Pioneer expandable cot bed is a luxurious baby to toddler transformer
For any infants who think they’re nocturnal creatures, sent here on a mission to fight sleep, Ewan The Sheep) is here to encourage them into the Land of Nod. Not only is he a cuddly, good-looking addition to any cot, Ewan has quite an array of ticks up his (woolly) sleeve. Firstly, his tummy emits a warm comforting glow and he also makes four white noises – including rainfall and heartbeat, which encourages babies to snooze. The Deluxe version even includes a sensor which detects when a baby is stirring, so that Ewan can reactivate soothing noises before a baby has time to wake up.

ongratulations, dads! You’ve made it to your very first Father’s Day! Becoming a new parent is a huge milestone that deserves to be celebrated, so show him just how much he’s loved with some intimate family time and a present he’ll treasure forever. Of course, nothing is more personal than a DIY gift, so if baby’s old enough, why not get creative with finger paints and crayons to create your own cards, banners and drawings that can be framed as a sentimental keepsake? You could even personalise a shop-bought styrofoam frame with colourful drawings or baby’s fingerprints, featuring a precious photo of dad and his little one. Planning a quiet one at home? Say thank you for all his help during those sleepless nights with a lie-in, waking him up with balloons, breakfast and coffee in his favourite (or brand new!) mug. Then cosy up for a read of baby’s favourite book. Fancy some fresh air? Be sure to give him a day full of memories and work up an appetite before dinner with some family time in the great outdoors. Perhaps he’d enjoy a round of golf, a bike ride in the park or some outdoor games in the back garden. Finally, don’t forget to finish the day with a celebratory slice or two of cake, either homemade by you or cute cupcakes depicting an adorable family photo – a dessert and gift all in one! hen Lucy Jewson and her husband Kurt founded Frugi – or, as it was known then, Cut4Cloth – back in 2004, they wanted to prove that it was possible to run a business that was profitable, successful, and more importantly, good for the environment. More than 15 years on, and it’s pretty clear that their venture has more than paid off. “Our eco approach has always been so significant to us, and I think it’s really valued by a lot of our customers, too,” says Lucy. “Many people are drawn to our products because they’re environmentally-friendly, but others like us for the fun designs and quality of the clothing, and the ethical bit is a bonus. When it comes down to it though, I think the way the clothes look is much more important. You can be as green as you like – if your products are ugly, nobody’s going to buy them!” But ugly they’re most definitely not, and at the launch of Frugi’s SS19 collection, Summer of Scillyness – where I’ve come to meet Lucy – the room is bursting with seaside brights, tropical tones and imaginative prints. Mermaids, whales, sharks, seagulls and puffins dance around stripes, polka dots and rainbows. And the incredible softness of the clothes is something else entirely. Taking real-life inspiration from the Isles of Scilly, Lucy explains that they start designing each collection by creating mood boards. “We do a sort of show and tell, and anyone who’s feeling creative – even those who don’t work in the design team – is encouraged to make a little mood board of ideas. Then we all sit in a big circle and listen to everyone’s suggestions, and eventually we find that themes start cropping up.” “This season, many people thought about the Isles of Scilly, probably because of our geography [Frugi is based in Cornwall], but also because there’s something quite magical about them. They’re like Cornwall, but better!” she laughs. Led by Frugi’s head of design, Jeni Bolton, the team sets out on a research trip to the isles themselves – to sketch and develop the collection’s key focuses. “That’s what’s quite different about us, I suppose – we go out and design in ‘real life’,” Lucy says. “We’re not going to designers and buying loads of prints, or looking at Google Images for inspiration. It all comes very authentically.” The idea behind Frugi was sparked one stormy summer evening when Lucy was

changing her son’s nappy. “I’d wanted to use washable nappies as I’ve always been very conscious of the environment [an estimated 3bn nappies are thrown away every year in the UK]. But what I found as I was putting Tom, my eldest, in these cloth nappies was that they give your baby a very big, round bottom! The poppers on his babygrows were constantly coming apart.” Lucy and Kurt dug around online to find something more suitable, but no brands were offering what they needed. “Around 15 per cent of the UK were using washable nappies at the time, so I thought this was surprising,” she says. Realising they’d stumbled upon a gap in the market, the couple decided to make the babygrows themselves, calling upon a few friends to help them launch their new venture. After establishing a relationship with an organic cotton manufacturer in Germany, Cut4Cloth finally released its first collection in June 2004, a capsule selection of babygrows, bodies, trousers, tops and cardigans that had a looser 360° fit – perfect for tots who wear cloth nappies. Within half an hour of the website being live, Lucy and Kurt received their first order for £60 – and the rest, as they say, is history. The business has flourished since then, changing its name to Frugi (meaning ‘fruits of the earth’ in Latin) in 2008, as the collection had expanded to include older children’s clothing – sizes now range from newborn to 10 years – as well as outerwear, swimwear, towelling and adult clothing. The brand also launched its waterproof Puddle Buster line of suits, wellies, bags, trousers and jackets in 2015. The amazing part? Each item is made from at least 20 plastic bottles. Now based in a purpose-built HQ in Helston, West Cornwall, Lucy tells me she’s especially proud of the family atmosphere among the team; days here are often filled with cake and fancy dress, and there’s even a ‘fun committee’ who plan activities for all the employees. “I think it’s so important to have fun

IT’S VITAL THAT OUR PRODUCTS HAVE A LONG LIFESPAN. WE’RE ALL ABOUT BUYING BETTER and enjoy what you’re doing, and we have a very flat structure here at Frugi. It’s not about management dictating everything – everyone has their part to play, even our customers.” This goes some way to explaining the inspiration behind the brand’s online community, The Frugi Family, a Facebook page where customers can share “the highs and lows of parenting and everyday life”. With an impressive 8,300 members, parents use the space to share photos, stories, questions and advice, and it’s proven invaluable since launching just over a year ago. Members of the ‘family’ are even given special puffin badges, so they can spot each other when they’re out and about. “The badges are a really nice way to connect the online community offline, particularly in our small town.” Lucy says. The longevity of the clothing is another aspect that’s hugely important, she adds. All of Frugi’s output is made from either recycled or organic materials that are incredibly durable, and you’ll also find adjustable straps and roll-down cuffs and waists on a lot of the pieces. “The amount of clothing that’s being produced now is having a huge impact on the environment, so it’s vital that our products have a long lifespan. We’re all about buying better: buying once and making it last.” But in building a sustainable brand, there must be some restrictions, especially when it comes to design. So, how easy is it really to be both green and profitable? “Price can be an issue, but there are ways Frugi is known for its vibrant colours, prints and patterns
Frugi has a family fee l, both in its Cornish HQ and thriving Fa cebook community
around it,” explains Lucy. “Because we use organic materials, in the early days we were limited; there were certain colours, prints and techniques we simply couldn’t use. But technology has moved on, and I think as an ethical brand there’s now not a lot we can’t do.” The last 12 months have also seen a huge shift in the world of Frugi, as Lucy has taken a step back while husband Kurt recovers from prostate cancer. Now the brand ambassador, she’s handed the reins over to the new CEO, Hugo Adams, after selling 80 per cent of the company to retail specialists True. “When Kurt got very poorly, taking care of him on top of keeping the business going was really hard. And even though he’s much better now, we still thought it was time to slow down and spend a bit more time together,” she says. “We’re still very passionate about Frugi and want to be part of the journey, but we needed someone with more experience of making a business like ours grow – and Hugo is the perfect fit.” The co-founder tells me she’s now got the best of both worlds; being involved in all the things she loves, including the design process, and ensuring the brand stays true to its values. So, it seems members of The Frugi Family needn’t be too worried that the brand will change much under new leadership, certainly as long as Lucy has anything to do with it. If anything, the future looks very bright: “I think it takes a certain set of skills to take a business from one level to another, and Frugi just really needs to grow up. I guess we’ll just have to see what happens from here, but I think it’s going to be really exciting.”

appy summertime all… I’m now in my sixth month of pregnancy and feeling so powerful mentally and more on the ball than ever! My radio show is on fire and that hilarious case of Baby Brain seems to have subsided. I honestly feel like I could take on the world (although perhaps from the comfort of my sofa). Something that I didn’t experience when pregnant with Genevieve is a change in eyesight. I’ve been a glasses wearer for years and need them for short-sighted vision. I recently noticed that things didn’t look as sharp as normal, so went to my local Vision Express only to find out that my eyesight has actually improved substantially! The optician explained that while pregnant your senses become somewhat superhuman and you literally become the best version of yourself. I absolutely love the idea of this... call us Wonder Women! I can safely say that my pregnancy glow is shining, and me and bump have been showing it off at a few red-carpet events recently. Now that my skin has calmed down a bit I’m able to focus on my hair and nails. My hair feels glossier and more hydrated then before. I found L’anza Healing hair care range really worked to get that early-pregnancy flaky scalp under control. As a family we’re trying to think more environmentally and with the new low emissions law in London, we’ve welcomed a new tiny petrol town car to the family; Genevieve has named our new four-wheeled friend Pink – I guess I could call it my Magenta Batmobile. See you next month!

hat do Hilary Duff, the Kardashians, Mad Men actress January Jones, and Chrissy Teigen all have in common? Besides juggling fame and parenthood, the answer is they’ve all eaten their own placentas. No longer just for earth mothers – or indeed celebrities – the practice of placentophagy, as it’s correctly called, is becoming A Thing. However, despite the recent interest, eating your own afterbirth is actually nothing new. In some cultures around the world, ingestion of the placenta is a time-honoured practice. Meanwhile, in the animal kingdom, it’s almost universal. And now increasing numbers of women in the UK are coming round to the idea, too, in the hope that a refreshing glass of placenta smoothie may provide the perfect postnatal pick-me-up. (Although if the thought of it turns your stomach, you can always opt to take it in tablet form instead.) During pregnancy, the placenta is attached to the lining of the womb, acting as a link between the mother’s blood supply and that of the baby. In addition, it protects against infection and supplies the foetus with nutrients, oxygen and hormones to help with development. Towards the end of the pregnancy, the placenta floods the baby with antibodies, providing important immunity for the first three months of life outside the womb. Given the placenta’s role in creating and sustaining life, it does seem rather rude to simply toss it unceremoniously away nine months later. It begs the question, could this vital organ keep on giving beyond pregnancy? When it comes to science, the jury is still out; there simply hasn’t been enough research to know whether eating the placenta provides any proven benefits. However, anecdotally,
W
it’s thought that returning the placenta to the body may help women to recover from birth by easing pain and bleeding and increasing energy levels and milk production. It’s also said to help protect against postnatal depression, something Chrissy Teigen firmly believes to be the case. Having talked openly about her mental health following the birth of first child, Luna, the model and actress credits eating her placenta after the birth of her son, Miles, with helping her to avoid it the second time round. While further studies are needed, the placenta is known to be rich in protein, fats, iron and other minerals, as well as hormones. Advocates believe that placenta consumption replaces lost nutrients and hormones, aiding both healing and emotional balance. And while it may not be much to look at – resembling a
crisp) before being ground and encased in a vegetable-based capsule, rather like a vitamin pill. This process is usually carried out by a trained specialist, although DIY kits are also available. Mum-of-two, Rebecca, drank some of her placenta in a smoothie and had the rest made in to capsules. She says: “I had a much easier time feeding my second baby and was less tired postnatally.” And while Rebecca says it’s impossible to know if this was down to the placenta, or other factors, she adds: “I’m glad I did it and probably would again. It did make me feel powerful and led to me having much more interest in this thing I’d grown inside me. And it meant there were more people caring for me and interested in my wellbeing, not just the baby’s.” Fellow mum-of-two, Lucy, admits that despite her initial scepticism, she’s now a convert. She says: “I had my placenta encapsulated, but also ate a small piece (on the advice of the NHS midwives attending) and it seemingly stopped the heavy bleeding that would have meant I had to go into hospital after an amazing home birth. I definitely noticed a difference in my mood and energy on the pills, compared to after my first child’s birth without them.” It may be a long time before placenta smoothies replaces tea and toast as a postdelivery snack, however as new mums catch on, placentophagy could become a wellness trend to watch out for. What’s more, the placenta is the only organ that isn’t obtained by killing or harming a living being, making it suitable for both vegans and vegetarians. If you want to try it for yourself, just make sure you tell your midwife, or it may end up as clinical waste.

ADVOCATES BELIEVE THAT PLACENTA CONSUMPTION REPLACES LOST NUTRIENTS rather ungainly slab of liver – women who’ve tried it say it you can hardly taste it once it’s been whizzed up with some fruit. New mum, Ruby, says: “I drank mine in five litres of berry smoothie. My poor partner blended it up for me! It didn’t taste bad at all and I produced that magical golden colostrum milk for two months, which I think may have been due to drinking it.” While some women opt to liquidise their placenta, others cook it like meat. However, if that doesn’t appeal, you can also have it encapusalted into pills. The placenta is washed and dried, then steamed with ingredients like lemon, ginger and green chili. It’s then dehydrated using a food dehydrator (or placed in an oven for eight to 10 hours until

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK? Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of very fine, hair-like needles into channels called meridians. These are invisible channels of energy that relate to different organs in the body. There are around 500 different acupuncture points around the body. The form of treatment is individualised – every person has a different type of treatment because we’re all different, but similar channels are used for the treatment of fertility and other channels for the treatment of conditions like PND.
HOW CAN IT HELP WHEN TRYING TO CONCEIVE EITHER NATURALLY OR THROUGH IVF TREATMENT? Acupuncture may help with blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, which means more oxygen, more nutrients and more help developing the follicles to produce an egg. It may also help with stress and beta-endorphin release, which means a greater sense of relaxation and wellbeing for mum.I find it can really give you that bit of extra support that you need, whether trying to conceive naturally or through IVF.

BREASTFEEDING
The Breastfeeding Café with
PROFESSOR AMY BROWN
THIS ISSUE WE ASK:
CAN I DONATE THE BREAST MILK MY BABY DOESN’T NEED?
B
reast milk protects babies of any age, but for some babies it really is vital. Babies who are born too sick or too soon often need breast milk the most, but can often not feed from the breast directly. They need their milk to be expressed and fed in a tube or syringe but their own mothers can sometimes struggle to express enough milk due to the shock and stress of an early, unexpected birth. This is where donor human milk can make all the difference to these babies. Milk from other mothers can be used, often while their mother is building up her own supply. But did you know, you could donate the milk to babies in this situation? If you’ve expressed milk that you don’t need for your own baby, or have a good supply, meaning that you can easily express more milk than your baby needs, then you could consider donating your excess supply to a milk bank. Human milk banks receive donations of expressed milk from mothers, screen it and pasteurise it, and then pass it onto hospitals. Hospitals use this donor milk for babies born at around less than 32 weeks, or who are sick, particularly with heart defects or needing surgery on their intestines – and their own mother

is struggling to feed them. Donor milk really can be life saving for these babies and help reduce their stay in hospital. It can also act as a ‘bridge’ while their mothers work to establish their own supply. Some milk banks will also be able to give donor milk to babies in the community who would benefit from receiving it. This might include babies who have a rare illness, or those with mothers who are undergoing chemotherapy or have had a double mastectomy, meaning they can’t breastfeed. The Human Milk Foundation is a charity dedicated to raising money to allow mothers and babies in these situations to receive donor milk. The foundation grew from seeing too many families not able to give their babies breast milk due to illness or low milk supply when they so desperately wanted to or didn’t meet the criteria to access donor milk for their baby. You can read more about their work and some of the stories of families who have benefitted on their website (humanmilkfoundation.org). HOW TO DONATE MILK • There are currently 16 milk banks in the UK. The UK Association of Milk Banking has a list with contact details on its website (ukamb.org). At present, the Hearts Milk Bank (heartsmilkbank.org) in Harpenden is the only one that recruits mothers with babies older than six months, but this may change soon. • There are a number of criteria to ensure that your milk’s healthy, as it’s going to the smallest, sickest babies. ou’ll fill in a uestionnaire and have blood tests. You may have had these tests done in pregnancy, but you’ll need them again. • The milk bank will also check that you don’t smoke, take drugs, drink high levels of caffeine, or drink more than a few units of alcohol a week. In some cases, you might find that you’re taking a medication that’s compatible with breastfeeding, but excludes you from donating milk.

PREGNANCY
TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT
GOING OVERDUE here are a lot of misconceptions about pregnancy with one of the biggest disappointments for many that your due date is, in all probability, not the date on which you’re going to finally give birth on. Desperate to finally meet the child you’ve been growing over the past nine long months, excitement builds as this gilded date approaches, only for, in the majority of cases, the date to come and go, with no appearance of baby. It would be more accurate to give women a ‘due period’ of five weeks, because, if your baby arrived any time between 37 and 42 weeks it’d be considered normal. And while your due date is usually given at 40 weeks, most firsttime mums give birth closer to 41 weeks. In fact, in France, the due date is given as 41 weeks. But while your baby might not be ready to meet the world at 40 weeks, the doctors or midwives looking after you should be keeping a close eye on you both. You should have an appointment at 40 weeks, when you might be offered a sweep – this is a vaginal examination where the midwife will gently try to stretch open your cervix and sweep around where the membranes are attached, which is thought to help start labour. It’s not part of the formal process and there’s not much evidence to show it helps, but most women are so desperate by then, they’re willing to give it a try. The problem is that if your baby doesn’t arrive, pregnancy becomes slightly more risky. We know the risk of stillbirth doubles in pregnancies that go over 42 weeks, so you’ll be advised to consider an induction, so that your

T
baby’s born by 42 weeks. Because an induction can take a while, they’ll often discuss starting this process at 41 weeks. In recent years, evidence has suggested that for some women, risks increase if the pregnancy progresses past 41 weeks. In fact, one study suggested that while mortality (the baby dying) increased after 42 weeks, morbidity (the baby being in poor condition when born) increased after 41 weeks. The age of the mother is also a risk factor. It’s thought that the older a mother, the more likely her placenta will ‘age’ and not function so well. This is the leading cause of stillbirth. As a result, increasingly, women over 40 are advised to start the induction process at 39 weeks, as the risks to their baby can increase after 40 weeks. While we’re great advocates of
trying to be relaxed, it’s important to understand your body and your pregnancy, so you can make the right decisions to keep you and your baby safe. Whether you’re being advised to have an induction or wait a little longer, ask the questions you need to in order to understand what’s being advised. Induction has a bad reputation in the pregnancy world, which we feel is a little unfair. Two-thirds of inductions work beautifully and result in labours with no further intervention. Probably the best thing you can do in those weeks leading up to what may or may not be D Day, is to relax, get organised and enjoy the peace you won’t have for much longer, knowing that if the doctors or midwives feel that it’s beneficial to help that natural process along slightly, you’re in good hands.

R ICE PUDDING WITH R HUBAR B COM POTE Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking: 50 minutes Serves 5 Suitable from 6 months (without maple syrup or honey)
Rhubarb season is upon up! This stalk makes the most delicious compote, which can be served on cereal, with ice cream, and it’s fantastic when added to rice pudding. This recipe’s a bit lighter than others, and so tastes delicious cold with warm compote or warm straight from the pan. You can top this dessert with any fresh or frozen fruit you like instead of the compote, and I suggest making double of the compote and freezing any leftovers for future puds. INGREDIENTS: FOR THE RICE PUDDING
• 120g risotto or pudding rice • 800ml full-fat milk or unsweetened almond milk • 2tbsp maple syrup or runny honey • 1tsp vanilla paste • 200ml water FOR THE RHUBARB COMPOTE
• 25g butter
84 | baby-magazine.co.uk
• 750g rhubarb, washed chopped into 1 inch pieces • 1 sweet apple, such as pink lady, peeled and chopped • 1 orange, juiced • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup • 20ml cold water • A pinch of sea salt METHOD
To make the rice pudding, put the rice, milk, 200ml of water, 2 tablespoons of the honey and the vanilla into a large pan. Give it a good stir, then place the pan on a very low heat. Cook gently for around 45 minutes, or until thick and creamy, stirring regularly. While that’s cooking, make the compote. To a small saucepan add the butter, rhubarb, apple, orange juice, water, honey, and sea salt. Cover and allow it to come to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, remove the lid and allow to simmer for 10 minutes. Most of the fruit will have broken down, so remove from the heat. For a smoother consistency, blend or mash with a fork. Taste and add extra sweetness If required. If the pudding has gotten too thick, add a splash of milk. Serve either chilled or warm with the warm rhubarb compote, or more simply with a sliced banana and drizzle of honey.

M A R I N AT E D C H I C K E N S K E W E R S W I T H C R E A M Y H E R B D I P Preparation: 30 minutes Cooking: 15 minutes Serves 8 Suitable from 1 year
Even if it’s not barbeque weather where you are, these Mediterranean inspired skewers will bring the spirit of summer to your family dinner table and make a great sharing platter, just add salads and tasty toasted pittas. INGREDIENTS FOR THE MARINATED CHICKEN:
• 5 garlic cloves, crushed • ½tsp paprika • ½tsp allspice • Salt and pepper • 5tbsp olive oil, divided • 8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs • 1tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional) • Juice of ½ lime FOR THE HERBY GREEN YOGURT SAUCE:
• 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 ripe avocado • large handful chopped fresh dill, stems removed • handful parsley, chopped • 200ml Greek yogurt • 1 tbsp olive oil • Juice of ½ lime
• A pinch cayenne pepper, optional • Salt, if needed METHOD
First marinate the chicken. Make the marinade by blending together all the ingredients. Cut the chicken into chunks. Place in a large ziplock plastic bag or bowl. Reserve a little marinade to brush on the chicken later. Pour the remaining sauce into the bag or bowl with the chicken. Seal or cover the mixture and refrigerate as long as you can, minimum 2 hours, but overnight is best. Soak the wooden skewers in water while preparing the dipping sauce. To make the sauce, combine the garlic, herbs, yogurt, olive oil, lime juice and cayenne pepper in a food processor. Blend until all the ingredients are well mixed into a smooth thick sauce. Test and add salt if needed. Transfer to a small bowl or container, cover and refrigerate. When you’re ready to grill, preheat the grill on medium high for 5 to 10 minutes and oil the grates. Meanwhile, drain off the marinade and place the chicken pieces on skewers. Place the chicken on the hot grill, cover and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Brush with the extra sauce and flip. Repeat this process until you can see that the chicken is browned to your liking and fully cooked. Serve with the sauce and a green salad, pitta or some cooked rice.

But what you might not know is that light causes these nutrients to degrade, so nutrient-rich milk fresh from the farm may have arrived in your fridge with less of the good stuff than you’d expect. Indoor lights in the supermarket and even the lights in your fridge can damage the vitamins in your milk! After just two hours of exposure to LED lighting – the type often found in your supermarket – fresh milk begins to lose vitamin A3. And after 16 hours milk found in

Buying milk in light-protected packaging will help keep the nutrients safe and ensure that you and your family get the nourishment you deserve. WHERE TO VISIT:
Quartiere Coppedè
Rome’s best-kept secret and an area many tourists often miss. Tucked away off the main streets of Quartiere Triests lies Coppedè – the city’s smallest and most magical district. Situated between piazza Buenos Aires and Taglimento, this compact gem will conjure-up fairytale thoughts and set imaginations alight.
WHERE TO VISIT:
Villa Borghese
Located to the north of the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, and slightly away from the regular tourist route, you’ll discover the park of Villa Borghese. Known as the ‘park of museums’ because of its plentiful museums and art galleries, bambinos will delight in discovering the famous mechanical water clock and small Biopark Zoo, which is home to more than 1,000 animals. While you’ll need a day to take in all that there is to see here, families can rent one of the park’s four- to six-seater bikes to explore the park at leisure.

xcitement levels began to soar as we reached the the foothills of the Black Mountains, reaching fever pitch as we finally came to a standstill at Upper House & Spa after a four-hour drive from London to the Welsh border. Me, my husband and our 17-month-old toddler Sebastian would be calling Hayloft, a beautifully-restored barn in the Herefordshire village of Craswall, home for the weekend. Upper House & Spa consists of two self-catering cottages – the onebedroom Hayloft and two-bedroom Long Barn – featuring an open-plan kitchen and living area in a doubleheight space. The cottages are a perfect blend of old and new, with both antique furniture and contemporary artwork. The owners had also thoughtfully set up a travel cot in the bedroom and a highchair by the dining table for our stay. Before we’d even unpacked, we set off on one of Upper House Farm’s three colour-coded walks. We opted for the easier red route with only a slight incline on the return. The 45-minute ramble took us across fields, through woodland and past an ancient spring, before returning us in time for sundowners on Hayloft’s terrace, with a crackling firepit cutting through the dusk cool. That night, with Sebastian settled in his cot, we feasted by the flames on a charcuterie supper of cured meats that we’d picked up earlier en route. Hay-on-Wye is just a 25-minute drive, so after a peaceful first night’s sleep, we took the scenic mountainside route

to the famous literary town. We spent the morning browsing bookshops and treating ourselves to ice creams at Shepherds Ice Cream Parlour before returning to Upper House armed with locally-sourced groceries from Hay Deli. Following a delicious lunch in our cottage, we returned to the path we’d taken the previous day. Running across a deserted field to the chorus of grazing sheep, grass tickling our ankles, was utterly liberating for all three of us. Although we spent most of our time outdoors, visitors can also book spa treatments, making use of the relaxation space within a separate cabin. There’s also Adrian’s Datcha, a rustic cabin filled with books, a log burner and table and chairs. Guests can use the space as a reading nook or take afternoon tea, which is priced at £19 per person. Hayloft boasts a fantastic kitchen and dining space, so we opted to dine on juicy sirloin steaks from Herefordshirebased Wild by Nature Meats, a farming family who also deliver meat boxes to London, on our second night. After one last long walk, we returned to light the wood burner and settled in for the night. Resisting the remote controls, we pulled two books from the bedroom’s library. The serenity and comfort of Upper House & Spa was pure bliss for our busy family, forcing us to press pause, unwind and explore nature. £390 for three nights at Hayloft, upperhouseandspa.co.uk

This enchanting neo-gothic St Moritz retreat has been a high-society hotspot for decades, with plush suites and enough designer boutiques to rival Knightsbridge. Impressively, the entire hotel is heated by lake water – saving around 500,000 litres of heating oil per year – and is even making an effort to swap plastic amenities for more eco-friendly alternatives. The pièce de résistance, however, is its exceptional restaurants. Of the seven dining options, young family members are best catered for by Le Restaurant’s fantastic kids’ menu. They’ll also be given free ice cream and popcorn during their visit, as well as Badrutt’s Palace pyjamas and cots. Interconnecting rooms are available upon request. INSPIRE What inspired Kit + Kin? My kids suffered with eczema from a young age and I really struggled to find products which didn’t further irritate. Lots of what’s on the shelves have long lists of ingredients which are impossible to understand, and I know so many parents have had the same issues. That’s why I wanted to create a go-to brand for families that you can trust: we use the most gentle, natural and sustainable ingredients possible to be kind on your baby’s skin as well as the planet. Once I’d been introduced to my co-founder Chris through a mutual friend, we knew we had the same vision and two years ago, Kit + Kin was born. Tell us about the brand’s commitment to the planet. It’s so important for brands to play a part in bringing about positive change. We all have a responsibility to do what we can to reduce our impact, but it’s so much easier if you can make a difference just through everyday products such as nappies. We use eco-friendly, sustainablysourced ingredients and materials; giving back is a huge part of

EMMA BUNTON The Kit + Kin co-founder talks juggling family life, carbon footprints, and brands’ responsibility to the planet who we are as a brand. We work with the World Land Trust, a fantastic organisation which raises awareness of rainforest deforestation. For every 10 nappy subscriptions bought, we purchase and protect one acre of threatened rainforest, safeguarding precious natural resources. And with the launch of our 100 per cent organic cotton babywear, we’ve expanded our giving-back programme to support local communities, by funding educational scholarships, family planning clinics and healthcare in Guatemala. Kit + Kin’s award-winning eco nappies reflect the brand’s commitment to sustainability
How do you juggle your family life and work? This is something that so many of us can relate to. As parents, we’re always busy and it can be overwhelming trying to fit everything in! It’s all about finding a balance that works for you. Work’s very important to me and I love what I do but we always prioritise family, especially on the weekends, when we can spend quality time all together. You recently added a clothing line, how did you find that? I absolutely loved the journey, it was hard work but so rewarding to see all the finished designs, and of course, getting brilliant feedback from customers. We spent almost two years on the collection, which
Her sons’ ezcema flare-ups inspired Emma to develop products with gentler, more natural ingredients
includes all-in-ones, hats, muslins, sleeping bags and blankets, and I’m so proud of the quality – every item is made from supersoft 100 per cent organic cotton. Do you have a favourite product? It has to be the bunny hats! They’re so cute and have been really popular with customers. I also love the blanket, it has a super stylish two tone design and looks lovely around the house. How can other young families lower their carbon footprint? The best way is to introduce small changes that all add up. We’re all busy, which makes it difficult to prioritise sustainability but recycling properly, reducing plastic waste, and buying ecofriendly, sustainable products really does make a difference. What’s next for Kit + Kin? We’re looking to expand our reach in the UK and in 30 new countries across the world! We’ll also be making some super-cute additions to the babywear range, so watch this space! kitandkin.com
