plagued by dry skin, so I’ll be taking a leaf out of mum Martha Alexander’s book, as she reveals her top baby beauty steals on page 80. Speaking of beauty, what’s more beautiful than a truly precious space for baby to get some shut-eye? If you’re about to embark on Project Nursery, head straight for page 108 for help creating your tot’s dreamy bedroom, from super-soft furnishings to the perfect cot. Somebody who knows a thing or two about fabrics is Akin Onal, co-founder of budding brand Mori. With a following that includes Kim Kardashian, we found out how he went from investment banking to baby sleepsuits and more. And don’t forget: the clocks go back on Sunday 28 October. Read Mandy Gurney’s top tips on page 98 to ensure this doesn’t mess with yours and baby’s sleep. And lastly, flick to page 19 where you could win a luxury Snüzkot. Little ones need to sleep in style, after all. Happy snoozing everyone!

If you’re expecting, then you may be experiencing newfound sleep disturbance. You can blame the hormones for that, says Zita West on page 83. The rise in progesterone levels in the first trimester can be responsible for tiredness, while other changes can affect muscles, often resulting in increased snoring and nightime dashes to the loo – who said pregnancy isn’t sexy? One mum who knows all about sleep deprivation is singer, actress, and most recently, founder of Kimba Kids, Kimberley Walsh. I had the pleasure of catching up with her to talk babies, business and raising boisterous boys – read all about it on page 35. This autumn, I’m determined to not be

leep is something we all cherish, but no one more so than new parents! So when it comes to keeping baby, and parents happy and well-rested, it starts with finding a super-soft, comfortable and supportive cot. Introducing the SnüzKot, the stylish collection from Snüz that’s designed to make sleep happier, better and easier, guaranteeing baby, as well as you and your partner, a peaceful night’s rest. And with 15 individually-styled cot beds to choose from in a range of colours, you can create a unique nursery to see your little one through their early years and beyond. What’s more, the SnüzKot has a lifespan of up to 10 years, with the option to convert into a toddler and junior bed as your child grows. The three mattress heights make it easy to

lift a newborn baby in and out, and once they learn to sit and stand independently, the base can be lowered to prevent them from climbing out. The SnüzKot range also comes with a selection of mattresses and mattress protectors to provide ultimate comfort and support, as well as Air-Flow technology to control baby’s temperature. The wipeable waterproof layers allow you to keep the surface clean and dry, while the ultra-soft protector offers extra absorbency. This issue, we’re delighted to team up with Snüz to offer one lucky winner a white SnüzKot Luxe, as well as a mattress, mattress protector and fitted sheet – all together, they’re worth over £570! INTERVIEW

Kimberley’s looking forward to seeing Bobby in this colourful Kimba Kid sweatshirt

on a destination urite dinner vo fa ’s ey u rl ob Kimbe e girls is N night with th

MY ESSENTIALS Tell us about your latest project Kimba Kids, how did it all begin? It came about quite organically. I mentioned to my family how I was struggling to find things for my eldest son, Bobby. I felt that everything for boys on the high street looked the same – nautical or dinosaur prints. My brother Adam works in the retail manufacturing world, so together we started it as a side project. It quickly became more than an idea, but, it still took a while; we started when Bobby was one and he’s four now, so that just shows how long it’s taken! I’ve had a lot of other things on, and had another baby since then (Cole, 19 months). It’s been a learning experience, but there’s never been a better time to launch than now. We’re really happy with where Kimba Kids is at. How was it working with your brother: any sibling squabbles? We haven’t argued since we were about seven or eight years

KIMBERLEY WALSH

The singer and actress talks kids’ fashion, raising two boys and growing her family old, we’re both quite chilled out really, probably because we’re the middle children of four. We have our own opinions though. I’ll find a colour I like and he’ll reply that it’s “not that commercial.” I have strong views on what I like and don’t like, but Adam The Kimba Kids girl is a tomboy

respects that – I’m representing the brand and need to believe in it. With the same token, Adam really knows the industry and I can’t argue with that. The connection you feel when you’ve made something from scratch is totally different. With that comes pressure, but the reward is so much greater. It was exciting seeing it come to life at the recent campaign shoot. Do you have a favourite piece? I love both the camo combo and the camo sweatshirt. I can’t wait to get Bobby in it! Cole’s not quite big enough yet, but he’s been trying

to put stuff on. I also love the girls’ grey jersey dress. I wanted the collection to let kids have a bit of fun with their clothes. Once they like wearing something they want loads of different versions of it. Nothing in the collection has complicated fastenings, so children can dress themselves easily. Having two boys, was it fun to design for girls too? It was! Obviously, I’ve got my own taste and I drew on that, but I’ve also had a lot of input from friends with daughters – especially when it came to how they would dress their girls. The little girl who would wear Kimba Kids is a bit of a tomboy and wants to be both comfortable and girly. That’s me, I never wanted to go down the floral dress route. Kimba Kids’ sizing starts at three years old – will you look into a line for babies too? I’d love to do baby sizes. I think

INTERVIEW

Bobby wearing Kimba Kids

The family lo ves visiting W illows Activity Far m in St Alban s

Husband Justin might need a bit of convincing before he agrees to a third baby – and more sleepless nights!

it would need to be a separate entity and maybe start with gift sets. When you’ve had babies, you know what they like to wear, what to give your new-mum friends, and what’s actually useful. I’m big on comfort. I hate to see babies looking uncomfortable in jeans or anything too twee. Being one of four, do you want to have any more children? I always said I wanted four, but maybe I’ll have to accept three. Justin might need a bit convincing though – we’ve just started sleeping again! We could leave a bigger gap next time, as there are only two years between Bobby and Cole. They’re very cute together though, so I’d still be happy if it was just two. We’ll see. How were your pregnancies? I didn’t find either pregnancy hard, so there’s nothing to put me off a third. Even if I had a bad third pregnancy I’ve got away with two good ones!

36 | baby-magazine.co.uk

Would you say motherhood has changed you? Motherhood changes you on so many levels. Being a mum is like joining a new club you never knew existed. From the minute they’re born, you put them before absolutely everything. It also made me way more emotional! What were your favourite gifts when the boys were born? The Sleepyhead was amazing for Bobby, but Cole wouldn’t go near it! My favourite gift for Cole was his personalised blanket from My First Years, he still loves it.

Where are your favourite places to shop for the kids? I genuinely shopped at Next all the time, which is why we teamed up with them. Playful, comfortable clothes is what Next does best – and the next-day delivery is amazing too. I’m also a big fan of Scamp & Dude, Fred & Noah, as well as Inch Blue and Step2wo for shoes! How about the kids’ bedrooms? I’ve got to this point with neither of them having a themed room or nursery. Is that really cruel? I’ve let Bobby fill his with Stormtroopers. Both of them are decorated with Farrow & Ball. Cole’s nursery is a lovely shade of green. Since becoming a mum, Kimberley has found that she’s much more emotional

Where is your go-to for a day out with the kids? We love Willows Activity Farm near St Albans and Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire. Bobby likes his home comforts, but Cole is such an outdoorsy kid. My sister has three sons and none of them are anywhere near as boisterous as my two. Where do you like to go in London for a date night? If I’m going to treat myself, I love the food at Nobu. I went to the one near Old Street in London with some girlfriends recently. What’s next for Kimba Kids? We’re working on a spring/ summer 2019 collection. It’ll include swimwear for boys, and mini-me designs for girls. We’re also in the process of launching a retail website – it will mean we can release limited edition designs quite quickly, so that’s exciting. Kimba Kids is available to buy now, prices start from £14. next.co.uk/kimbakids

Interiors guru and new mum to baby Otis, Amanda Cotton talks blogging, slowing down and having fun with print Why did you start your blog? I started the blog two years ago to document our Victorian terrace renovation and homeware finds. More recently, I added the kids’ section for all things baby related, from interiors to my must-have items. Where did your passion for interiors begin? I work in fashion, so expressing my creativity through my home is just another outlet. Who do you like to follow on Instagram? Kerry Villers (@kerryvillers) is a favourite. Her children and home are beautiful, and the way she shoots them is really creative. I also love Brooklands.23 (@ brooklands_23_). His house – which he built and designed himself – is amazing, and his commentary is always amusing.

40 | baby-magazine.co.uk

What’s the best thing about motherhood? I couldn’t pick just one thing, I love being his mummy! Seeing his smile and knowing it’s because of me is the best feeling in the world. He’s taught me to slow down and appreciate everything for the first time again. Otis has a very stylish nursery. Does he sleep well? Otis hasn’t moved into his nursery yet as he’s only 13 weeks old, but he does sleep really well. At six weeks he was already sleeping seven to eight hours straight. Any tips for creating the perfect nursery? Choose the cot and changing table first. A theme helps to narrow the focus – I went with a jungle look for Otis’ nursery. Babies love colour and patterns, so have fun with it. I’ve just ordered some of Fiona Walker’s animal heads, I’m so excited to put them up!

There are lots of delicious flavours, but our favourite has to be Strawberry & Beet. We’re gearing up for Halloween fun in our home. BABY TALK

e’re home. Five days ago, we closed the front door behind us as three. I had decorated this moment in my mind, during the bouts of insomnia that punctuated my pregnancy: we’d waft in to the sound of distant birdsong. I – a newly de-bumped earth-mother in a cotton tunic – would be beaming with the sort of joy only witnessed at the end of Richard Curtis films. Ha! The reality is that I clumsily hobble to the bedroom wearing an XXL nightdress, Ed’s socks, Birkenstocks and an adult nappy. No one told me about the nappy bit. Nor did I know that almost all clothes would become surplus to requirement over the coming days; that the merest brush of fabric against my abdomen would make me wince. The nappies, in the most glamorous of fashions, are high-waisted to keep a safe distance from my c-section incision, while dealing with the post-birth bleed. Fortuitously, I invested in a breathable linen robe weeks before. This will soon become my second skin, peeled off only every few days to wash. I sling it on and take position in the newly anointed ‘feeding chair’, a vintage leather armchair,

Joanna McGarry AN D BABY N OAH AR RIVE H OM E TO DISCOVER NOTHING IS QUITE TH E SAM E AS BEFOR E commandeered from the living room and draped with a quilted blanket. Here’s where I’ll learn to breastfeed Noah, where it’ll finally click, but that moment is still several days away. For now, we muddle on, gently changing positions, determined to find one

that neither rests on my middle, nor puts weight on my painfullynumb tailbone, but will still help Noah latch properly. In the hope that Ed might take on a night feed, I express too, cranking up the Philips Avent electric breast pump until its whirring thrum switches to something that can only be described as late-nineties drum and bass. We convulse with laughter. Delirium has set in, and after the past week, it’s welcome. Overnight, our once serene bedroom becomes a hive of baby-related activity. My neat clutch of fragrances are swiftly replaced with nipple pad sachets, a tube of Lansinoh nipple balm,

antibiotic cream for my c-section, antibiotics to clear the sepsis, Nystatin nipple thrush drops and the eight different medications I’m under strict instructions to take each day, including an injection in my thigh to prevent blood clots, which I administer during Love Island. Aside from loo breaks, I scarcely leave this room for the next 14 days. We cancel all visitors and quite literally, bed-in for the duration. Time is no longer absorbed in days, but hour by hour, sleep by sleep, feed by feed. The bed becomes a control desk strewn with muslin cloths. Ed, ever the logistician, sets an alarm to wake

us every two hours, and I shuffle from bed to chair to feed a dozing Noah as Ed watches on, doing not much of anything other than being present, which feels so vital. The sleeplessness will be the hardest thing, everyone said. But it’s oddly manageable for Team Insomniac. It’s in these half-conscious 4.23am moments, while marvelling at her curled toes and admiring her perfect ears, that I’m overcome with a visceral sense of wonderment. It’s in these moments, when she’s as close to me as she was in the womb, that I know I’d do it all again in a heartbeat: adult nappies – the lot, just to have her.

baby-magazine.co.uk | 63

INTERVIEW

Rosie took time out after Jack’s birth to ensure that the family had time to bond

very new mum knows that those first few months can be magical, overwhelming and all-consuming. Not only are you getting to know your new baby, but at the same time discovering a whole other side to yourself: one that’s nurturing, capable of unconditional love, and surviving on very little sleep! For most new mothers the gym’s low on the priority list, as the lure is instead to allow your body time to recover. The problem is that even at this emotionally delicate time, we’re bombarded with celebrities who seem to regain their gorgeous bodies mere weeks after giving birth. Thankfully, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley isn’t one such star. When asked her secret to reclaiming her stunning figure following the birth of her son Jack in June 2017, she replies: “I decided not to rush. I’ve never been a fan of fad diets, so I decided early on that I would take my time and just eat clean, even if it meant not feeling entirely confident about my body for a while. “And I certainly wasn’t going to rush back to work. It was so important to spend time together as a family, so we could become used to this new dynamic… I’m so glad I did that.” Arguably, having such an enviable physique to start with certainly helps, but when you’re a top supermodel, burgeoning actress and entrepreneur, there must be a huge amount of pressure to bounce back quickly? “Oh, there is pressure…” agrees Rosie, before adding: “… mostly from myself! But everyone has pressure around them. The pressure in the public eye is very real, but is it actually any more stressful than the demands on another new mum? I don’t think so for one second.” Such candid honesty isn’t surprising coming from one of Britain’s most enterprising and successful fashion stars. Despite possessing

MOTHERHOOD IS MAGICAL AND HUMBLING. YOU CAN'T HELP BUT BE CHANGED BY IT a double-barrelled moniker that alludes to an aristocratic heritage, the pillow-lipped beauty was actually raised on a Devon farm by a fitness-instructor mother and charteredsurveyor father. “We didn’t have a lot of money, and I’m grateful for that, because my upbringing was really sheltered. Even now, I love going home, because I’m reminded of what’s important, which is family,” says Rosie. “I think sometimes people find it hard to believe that I’ve come from nothing, simply because of where I’ve ended up, but I’ve worked really hard, and I hope that I can inspire other young women that anything is possible.” Where Rosie has ‘ended up’ is living in Los Angeles with her handsome movie-star fiancé, Jason Statham and their adorable son. But despite adopting what could be considered the full Hollywood lifestyle – an elegant Beverly Hills mansion, regular appearances on the A-list circuit, and gorgeous Instagram shots of Rosie holding Jack by the shore as they gaze out over the Pacific Ocean – the couple have remained true to their roots, with Rosie often hosting Sunday roast lunches for fellow expats. She also retains a very British sense of humour, revealing that the secret to their romance (and successful parenthood) is laughter. “It still feels

like I’m hanging out with my best friend,” she admits. “There’s so much fun and love in our home right now… it’s just been beautiful to see Jason become a father. He’s the best dad! “Motherhood is magical and humbling. You can’t help but be changed by it. I almost feel like a different person – there’s this huge sense of wonder at how much love you feel this new person, but also, that shift of priorities as Jack now becomes my number-one focus. That inevitably changes how you feel about taking on certain jobs,” she says. Having spent the best part of a decade building on her brand, it’s fair to say that the 31-year-old Victoria’s Secret Angel can afford to be picky about her work. The truth is, someone as striking as her could have made a lucrative living solely from modelling, having led campaigns for the likes of Burberry, Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana. But even early on, it was clear Rosie was keen to be more than just a pretty face. In 2011, it seemed as though she might take the more traditional model-turned-actor route, appearing opposite Shia LaBeouf in Transformers: Dark of The Moon; yet it’s her partnership with high-street titan Marks & Spencer that has ensured a spot as an industry

Fiancé Jason has pro ven him self to be a wonderful father

power player. Launching in 2012, the Rosie for Autograph lingerie, swimwear, activewear and beauty line has sold tens of millions of units. “Modern women want clothing and beauty products that make them feel good, and it makes me so happy to know that I am contributing to boosting their self-image,” she says. “Obviously, having become a mum, my vision shifts to a side that encompasses all those feelings and emotions, so I’m interested to see how I can move things forward. “I think a big part of what I create next will be about embracing optimism and confidence. They’re typically things that take a knock when children come along, as we divert so much of our attention towards our little ones.” Indeed, having been submerged in the fashion industry from the age of 16, Rosie knows how important it is to preserve one’s self-esteem. That’s why, even now, she strives to promote positivity through her Instagram account (which boasts 7.9million followers) and her brand new beauty site, Rose Inc. “Even I find myself negatively affected when scrolling through feeds! We need to celebrate the beauty of diversity, both for those with and without children,” she says. Rosie also hopes to instil in Jack some feminist values, noting the importance of her son growing up with an awareness of his mother’s role outside of the home as a businesswoman. “There’s still a sense among successful women that we ought to be surprised or grateful. I’m guilty of it myself, whereas men seem to have boundless confidence. That’s something we need to work on,” she says. “For the most part though, I’m still really excited about my work and looking forward to pushing it in new directions. Becoming a mother inevitably changes you, and of course, there will be compromises along the way, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up one side of yourself entirely.”

ith glamorous mums across the globe making the Cybex Priam their pushchair of choice, including Liv Tyler, Keira Knightley and Binky Felstead to name but a few, the German-based brand has proven to be a real hit with style-conscious mums and dads. Although it has teamed up with fashion icons such as Jeremy Scott and Anna K for exclusive collections, Cybex is not just renowned for its style – it has a plethora of safety and innovation awards to shout about too.

The recline function is ideal for sleepy strolls

ATTRACTIVE The Priam really is as stylish as it is practical, offering a generous array of denim-style looks, ranging from muted tones to bolder statements. I opted somewhere in the middle with Autumn Gold. The pushchair’s design takes inspiration from American designers Ray and Charles Eames, and it really shows in the striking chrome chassis, with its cool clean and modern lines.

PRACTICALITY AND DRIVABILITY As a first-time mother, I was conscious of whether the Priam’s size would impede others when out and about. However, I’m pleased to report that its dimensions are ideal for navigating fellow shoppers, even at peak times! It’s also light and nimble in traffic, leaving you one hand free to fill the generously sized shopping basket below. At 5’10, I struggled to find a pushchair that

The Priam is available in a host of fashion-forward shades

allowed for a longer stride, but I can safely say that the Priam does. The handlebar can be adjusted with ease to any height, and the seat has been designed to be at table level. Whether I’m travelling by bus, car or train, the Priam is easy to fold, or park up and secure with one hand and a flick of the footbrake.

COMFORT The Priam really excels in this department. The drive is naturally smooth for strolling, but its ability to handle rough terrain amazed me too. A towpath walk is a daily ritual for me, so I must thank the Priam’s memory foam

mattress and smooth suspension for assisting me in keeping up my routine while Thea snoozes in her spacious carrycot. We’ve also been very impressed with the lie-flat seat position, which is now Thea’s favourite way to travel.

VERDICT Gliding effortlessly through the daily throng of motherhood, the Priam takes the challenges of your day in its stride. So far, it has only enhanced my daily routine and I look forward to switching to the complete stroller package as Thea grows. From £800, cybex-online.com

Hit the road

Start your parenting journey right by selecting the best travel system for your family few years ago, when somebody mentioned the term ‘travel system’ you wouldn’t have had a clue what they were on about, but if you’re in the throes of making that important pushchair purchase you’ll soon become fluent in buggy babble. Simply put, a travel system is a pushchair that is compatible with a rear-facing car seat, and usually a carrycot (sometimes referred to as a bassinet). As an all-in-one solution, travel systems offer parents convenience. And according to research by big-name retailer Mothercare, this is becoming a very popular choice, with 70 per cent of pushchairs sales falling in to the travel-system category. A product like this will get daily use, so try to see it as an investment, with many models built to see you through two or even three children.

Particular styles and colours will go out of stock if they’re popular choices, so if you have your heart set on a particular brand, be safe and start your search around the 20-week mark; that way you’ll have plenty of time to get to grips with it, too. There are lots of things to consider: do you need a double or a single? What terrains will you be pushing it on? Will you be using a lot of public transport? And if you have a car, does it fit in your boot? Many travel systems come in bundles, so make sure you know what you’re getting for the price; some come with a car seat, carrycot and seat, whereas others only offer the chassis and seat, and you don’t want to be faced with lots of additional charges. To help you make this difficult decision, we’ve brought together our pick of the best travel systems around.

Perhaps not the most conventional option, but it can’t be denied that the Doona car seat is a clever bit of kit. It is the only car seat with integrated wheels, with other easy-travel features including instant-fold, compact storage and a one-touch brake. Created with busy parents in mind, this is the perfect choice for quick trips to the shop or school-run dashes. As this car seat doesn’t lie flat, it’s important to remember that it’s not recommended to use it for more than two hours, so if you’re dreaming of long strolls this probably isn’t the one for you. £279.99, cuddlecoshop.co.uk

A real touch of luxury is the 100 per cent full-grain leather accents on both the handlebar and bumper bar. And you can shop until you drop with the super roomy and easy accessible shopping basket. Some retailers offer the Cruz as a bundle with the carrycot (making it suitable to use from birth) and some sell it separately. From £519.99, johnlewis.com

ith a background in investment banking at J.P. Morgan, as well as an MBA from The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania, entering the world of babywear may not have seemed like a natural choice for Akin Onal back in 2015. And yet, three years on, the Mori cofounder has transformed a simple concept into an enormously successful children’s brand that’s taken the world by storm, garnering attention from the likes of fashion influencer Chiara Ferragni, blogger Louise Pentland and celebrity Binky Felstead to name just a few. “It was daunting at the beginning,” Akin says – recalling the days when he and business partner and long-term friend, Cam Miller, decided to launch the project. Like Akin, Cam didn’t have children of his own, so it proved to be a learning curve for both of them. “We did a lot of research, and focus groups with parents taught us the real pain points. I also remember spending my time on flights reading baby books, and receiving so many supportive smiles and compliments from cabin crew, assuming that I was about to start my parenting journey!” he laughs. The idea behind Mori was inspired by a gap in the market, which Akin spotted while shopping for a gift for his young niece. “I realised there was a lot left to innovate in terms of fabrics. Baby’s skin is exceptionally sensitive, and they find it difficult to regulate their temperature. By overlaying innovative fabrics with minimalist Japanese aesthetics, Mori was born.”

I REALISED THAT THERE WAS A LOT LEFT TO INNOVATE IN TERMS OF FABRICS Babies spend most of their time in bodysuits and sleepsuits, so in Akin and Cam’s view, the need for super-soft essential clothing was irrefutable. They got to work on crafting breathable, thermo-regulating products of the highest quality – from lightweight garments for hot summer days to super-cosy pieces for sleeping, as well as snuggly hooded towels made from fast-drying micro-cotton. The concept was an instant hit with parents, and has even managed to attract a significant celebrity’s following. “When Kim Kardashian was expecting her daughter, we were the first baby brand she spoke about on her stories,” explains Akin. “Then when Chicago was born, the first story she showed to the world featured our front-opening sleepsuit, which was huge for us.” Since the brand’s launch, Mori’s bestselling sets have proved a sensation, too. For new

customers, there’s the starter set, which comes with front-opening sleepsuits, yoga pants, swaddle bag, blanket and more. The supreme set, meanwhile, is almost a one-stop shop for babywear – available from newborn to 12 months, it comes complete with 32 beautifully crafted products. While a great deal of thought goes into the materials and practicality of each design, “fickle fashion trends,” as Akin calls them, are only a very small part of the process. “Aesthetics are an important aspect to us. We want to achieve perfect simplicity, so we work constantly on improving existing products; removing elements and adding new ones.” Their love for the environment is also a large factor, as only sustainable resources and organic materials are used. The word mori even gives a small nod to nature, meaning forest in Japanese. “Clothing brands tend to

have a big impact in terms of their carbon footprint,” Akin adds. “We believe in looking after the environment and doing everything we can to be as sustainable as possible.” There’s further evidence of this in the brand’s Kindness Project, which aims to help the environment while supporting children in London who live in poverty. “We decided that by giving clothing a new lease of life, we could not only recycle clothes, but also help people who are in need. So, we reached out to a local charity, Little Village, that accepts donations such as clothing, pushchairs and so on, and gives these to families in London who may not be as fortunate as others.” Evidently, Mori’s a brand that’s always thinking outside the box; in ways few babywear retailers have ever considered before. Its Clever sleeping bags, for instance, have been enormously popular, providing safety and comfort as well as ease of use. Is it any wonder that parents can’t get enough? “We have exceptionally loyal customers who absolutely love the softness of the products, and also that we’re a brand that offers support and information,” says Akin. “We’ve even had dads asking us if we can custom-design adult sleeping bags and pyjamas, as they want to surprise their wives for Christmas! All this reassures us that we’re doing something right.” “Sleep Club is one of our newest projects, and one we’re very passionate about,” Akin adds. “We’ve created a membership so that we can continue simplifying parents’ lives, and

give them rewards, too.” To sign up, parents simply need to input their baby’s birthday online and Mori calculates the size they need. They’ll then have a different sleepsuit delivered every month for a small subscription fee. “As a gift, it really helps new parents and takes away that worry of constantly having to think about buying the next size up.” That close bond between Mori and its customers is something he and Cam evidently still cherish, and Akin still takes the time to read almost all the emails he receives from people. “It allows me to know how we’re doing as a brand, and if our customers are happy with our products,” he says. “I used to write back to some, but as we’re growing rapidly I have less time to do this.” With so much to juggle – Akin tells me he’s a “very hands-on CEO” – it’s amazing that he has any time left for himself at all. But the cofounder still finds opportunities to engage in one of his biggest passions: travel. “The nature in Milford Sound in New Zealand is magical. Another place I found captivating was the Scottish Highlands, which are stunning and actually very similar to New Zealand.” Back on the subject of business, the next few months look to be an exciting time for Mori. “We have a limited edition design collaboration with Central Saint Martins coming out,” Akin tells me. “And we’re expanding in the US and focusing on community-building activities. We’re also doubling our product range. Next year is going to be even bigger!”

ou look fresh,” says my friend Julia as we meet for a picnic with our daughters. “Your skin looks lovely.” I am, needless to say, absolutely delighted. Even though my daughter slept through the night from a young age and is generally as well behaved as a toddler can be, motherhood is knackering and compliments on my appearance are few and far between; I’d rather sleep, read or gormlessly stare at the TV when I have time for myself – not blow dry my hair or apply dewy make-up. So, what’s my secret? Face cream designed for babies. My days of wafting into Selfridges and spending upwards of £50 for a beautifully packaged thimble of day cream are over. Now, I use Mustela Hydra Bébé Facial Cream or Weleda Calendula Face Cream if my skin’s feeling extra thirsty. The latter is certified organic and popular with catwalk models who need to keep their skin looking refreshed and flawless for the international fashion-week circuit. Because both products are gentle enough for babies – they contain no nasties and are richly nourishing – it stands to reason that they’ll be good for me too, especially as I have a troubled history with my own skin and often

find myself negotiating the unfair combination of angry spots and itchy dryness. And, given that they’re much cheaper than the high-end adult products I was once such a sucker for, I knew I was onto a winner. I gave it a go and had to admit he was right. The shampoo, with argan oil and extracts of fig and papaya, is soft in both smell and texture and now my hair has the sleekness that previously only aggressive hair straightening could achieve. I then discovered Love Boo also offers a hair detangler: not just perfect for my daughter’s gorgeous knot-prone hair, but also my locks, which are unpredictable to say the least. With these successes under my belt, I began to view baby toiletries with a new respect. I started washing my face with Burt’s Bees Buttermilk Soap, which smells heavenly, kind of like honeyed ice cream. It leaves my skin clean, but without making my face feel tight and starved of moisture, which is often my experience after using harsher soaps, thanks to it containing no phthalates, parabens, petrolatum or sodium lauryl sulfate. In the shower, I reach for the Child’s Farm Hair & Body Wash and if I have time for an actual soak in the tub, Johnson’s Night Time

After a couple of months of moisturising with baby face creams, I told my husband about my unexpected skincare win, anticipating that he’d react with a nod and a grunt – he’s not one for discussing the benefits of lotions and potions. So I was surprised when he admitted that he’d been using our daughter’s shampoo and conditioner for ages. “It’s brilliant,” he said of the Love Boo baby range. “This is the best my hair has ever

The Neal’s Yard Pure Baby Oil is also a winner – I even add it to my hair’s dry ends. Both of these are fragrance free, and therefore suitable for anyone with super-sensitive skin that would often react badly to heavily fragranced lotions. I can also recommend the natural sleep aids

I used religiously on my daughter in the early days. This Works Pillow Spray smells blissful, a heady lavender scent that I soon became addicted to, even packing it in my overnight bag to ensure a deep sleep when I’m not in my own bed. I was also recently introduced to the Mummy Loves Organics Sleepy Feet Foot Oil which, as the name suggests, is applied to infant feet (and behind the ears) as a means of helping send them off to the land of nod. Again, this is a lavender fragrance, but with hints of mandarin and chamomile which make this a luxurious treat right before bedtime. As you can probably tell, I’m a total convert; only my make-up and toothpaste are for grownups. From the game-changing results to the remarkable price points – I’m obsessed with the benefits of baby toiletries!

ecoming a parent – whether it’s for the first or the fourth time – is always a wonderful and exciting experience. But nobody ever said it was easy, and contrary to some people’s assumptions, just because you’ve given birth, it doesn’t mean you know everything there is to know about babies. There are so many opinions as to ‘what’s best’ for a newborn, and in the early days, it can be overwhelming trying to decide whose advice to listen to. As a mother of three and having trained at the Norland College, I’m fully aware of how difficult it can be to put even the best advice into practice. So, when new mums ask me what I think is the single most important tip for coping with a baby, without a moment’s hesitation, I always say “routine”.

The basis of a good routine is structure with a bit of flexibility. Staying at home and dedicating every hour to your baby is simply not sustainable, but you can easily feed while you’re out and about and, in time, your little one will learn to nap away from home, too.

SET BOUNDARIES NOW, AND IF YOU REMAIN CONSISTENT, EVERYTHING ELSE WILL FOLLOW If you’re already a parent, you may have an existing routine that your little one will have to slot into. However, most babies will adjust to a three-hourly routine if you guide them – just try to take it one step at a time. A flexible routine will teach your baby what is expected of her, and knowing when feeds and naps are due will allow you to plan your days. It should also give you confidence – and if you’re feeling self-assured, your baby will feel safe, relaxed and calm.

Babies aren’t born with their body clocks in place, so if you let her make the decisions, she’ll inevitably choose to stay up all night and

sleep in the daytime. Babies generally become sleepy after being awake for about an hourand-a-half – any longer and she’ll become overtired and find it difficult to settle. She will also need one long stretch of sleep in a 24-hour period, so make sure this happens at night. The best sleepers are babies who have been taught to self-settle, so by putting her to sleep fed and happy – but still awake – you’ll allow her to drift off all on her own. My golden rule for a peaceful evening is to not let your baby sleep after 5pm. This is the time for her to be awake, have a snack and enjoy bathtime before her next feed and sleep. If you have other children, allow them to enjoy bathtime, too, and read a story

BABY’S ROUTINE

together while baby is feeding. Bedtimes ultimately need to be consistent and positive, and the goal is to have baby in bed by 7pm. Swaddling may also help. Babies are born with the Moro reflex – if startled, she’ll start to wave her arms uncontrollably and brush her hands across their mouth, simulating the sucking reflex. She’ll then wake up thinking it’s time for a feed. Swaddling, however, will make her feel secure as she sleeps – read more about swaddling on page 92.

FEEDING Good feeds are also key to a successful routine, so wake your baby for these during the day. Encourage her to feed well every

FIVE TIPS FOR SETTING A ROUTINE

1. Teach your baby to self-settle. 2. Encourage good nap times so she avoids feeling groggy and overtired. 3. Wake your baby for regular, full feeds during the day. 4. No sleeping past 5pm for a 7pm bedtime. 5. Have a calm bedtime routine at the same time each evening.

three hours or so, and wake her if she starts to fall asleep. Just because your baby dozes off during a feed, it doesn’t mean she’s had enough, and if you try to put her down to sleep, she’ll undoubtedly wake up after a few minutes feeling hungry again. Never feel guilty about waking her up for a feed either – I never let babies go longer than four hours between feeds during the day.

MOVING FORWARD Many of the problems parents encounter as their children get older stem from a lack of routine early on. So, set boundaries now and, if you remain consistent, everything else will follow. As your baby grows, you’ll be able to shorten daytime naps and move feeds on to become family meals. Your baby will never judge you, so approach your routine with a positive mind. Feel confident in the fact you’re doing the best for her, and you’ll be rewarded with a happy child who’s ready to conquer everything with confidence, trust and huge smiles.

I’M HOPING TO BREASTFEED, IF I CAN. WHAT IS DREAM FEEDING AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

M

any mothers worry about their breast milk supply, especially when comparing themselves to others, but it’s important to remember that there is no normal when it comes to breastfeeding. Every mother and baby is different. The term ‘dream feeding’ refers to breastfeeding your baby when she’s in a sleep state. When a baby’s settled and asleep, you can gently lift her and latch her on. Encourage her to suck by gently stroking her lip with your nipple; you can hand express a little to trigger the let-down reflex, so milk is available: all while baby is still sound asleep! Some families like dad to get involved by using expressed breast milk so mum can get more sleep, but I wouldn’t recommend you start this before breastfeeding is well established. Also, bear in mind that freshly expressed breast milk is preferable, as it has bacteria-fighting properties and is higher in antioxidants, vitamins and fat than milk that has been refrigerated or frozen. Babies are regulated by their biorhythms and appetite, so they all have their own preferred feeding needs. Studies on breastfed infants – monitoring them between six weeks

and six months – that has shown two thirds will continue night feeds during this period, and a quarter of their daily nutrition is taken on between 10pm and 4am. With this in mind, mums can be reassured that although we’d all like more kip, night feeds are very normal. Often, mums will introduce a regular nightly dream feed at around 11pm, as it’s thought to help the baby sleep longer before the next feed, and improve your wellbeing too. Occasionally, mums may also need to dream feed due to fullness, feeding to aid comfort. Other reasons to dream feed could be when a baby’s experiencing latching difficulties. Latching a baby on the breast when they’re in a hungry, distressed state can make both mum and baby anxious, so ensuring a good feed is done when baby is calm and asleep is ideal. This is also the case when re-establishing breastfeeding after supplementation or using a feeding aid such as a nipple shield. Weigh up the options – being mindful not to create a habit that’s hard to break – and choose what’s right for your family. Sioned Hilton is Medela’s in-house lactation consultant. medela.co.uk

TIPS FOR EXPRESSING SUCCESS • Refrigerate or freeze your milk straight away. Store it in sterilised BPA-free bottles or storage bags at the back of the fridge or freezer. • It expands as it freezes, so always leave bottles and bags a quarter empty. To save waste and ease thawing, save in small portions, as they can be combined once defrosted. • Label bottles and bags with the amount and date. • Gently swirl milk before a feed to mix the layers. • Milk can be defrosted in the fridge in 12 hours, or by holding the bottle or bag under warm running water. Don’t defrost at room temperature, or use a microwave or boiling water. • Once thawed, milk may be kept at room temperature for two hours, or in the fridge for up to 24 hours. • Don’t re-freeze breast milk. • Healthy, full-term babies can drink breast milk at room or body temperature.

LABOUR

The water-birth pool promotes the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers

LABOUR

WAT E R B A B I E S Dr Karen Joash OBSTE TRICIAN AN D GYNAECOLOGIST AT TH E PORTL AN D H OSPITAL E XPL AIN S TH E BEN EFITS OF WATER L ABOU R AN D BIRTH

ater labour and birth is becoming an increasingly popular choice amongst expectant mothers. Water labour is often used as a tool to cope with pain, while some mothers will choose to deliver in the water, either by entering the pool from the early stages of labour and throughout, or right at the end of their labour, just before their baby is born. Water labours are renowned for the effect they can have on relaxation during the most painful parts of giving birth. The pool promotes the release of hormones called endorphins which are our bodies’ natural painkillers, helping us to manage pain, in turn, this can also lead to a slightly shorter first stage of labour. It also has the added benefit of lowering the mother’s blood pressure without reducing placental blood flow. The buoyancy effect also means women feel more mobile in water, and find it easier to get into good positions for labour. Women that opt for a water birth are often less likely to need an epidural. For this reason, NHS UK guidance recommends water birth as a natural way of coping with labour pains. A 2017 Care Quality Commission survey showed that 18 per cent of women are likely to use water as a form of pain relief in labour, with 10 per cent of women giving birth in the pool. Traditionally this was a birth choice mainly reserved for low-risk pregnancy, but increasingly women with other conditions, such as previous caesarean, are being allowed

W

to go through labour in water with careful monitoring of both mum and baby. The best time to enter the water is usually after 5cm, when the contractions are coming every three minutes: this is when labour is established. In some cases, water immersion may slow down the contractions; in these cases, the women are encouraged to leave the pool and mobilise to encourage the contraction frequency to increase. Once in the pool, the temperature should be keep between 35-37˚C in the first stage of labour and 37-37.5˚C in the second stage. If

the next contraction. The practitioner will lift the baby out of the water on to her chest. Some women may be asked to leave the pool for delivery of the placenta, particularly if they plan to keep it or extract stem cells. The studies around water births are mixed. Some groups cite that the risk of tearing is reduced. Another study showed that the risk of third-degree tear was higher; however, this was related to a very fast pushing stage. The birth attendant can’t support the perineal area to offer tear protection during the birth, due to the risk of stimulating the baby before it’s out of the water. The woman should thus be encouraged to breathe slowly as the head is crowning. Techniques such as antenatal perineal massage may also be used to try and reduce the risk of tearing in the second stage of labour. There have been some concerns about the baby inhaling water into its lungs, but the lungs aren’t inflated until the first breath is taken, and studies have shown little difference in the health of babies born in water in comparison to those in air. The rates of infection are also similar, and there’s no increase in the rates of those requiring special baby unit care. Current NICE guidelines are that water immersion is a safe and useful tool in labour and should be offered to all women without contraindications, such as breech babies, multiple births, herpes, pre-term delivery and some chronic medical conditions. Recovery after a natural birth is usually quicker, due to the relaxing effects of water which promote energy conservation during labour.

THE BUOYANCY EFFECT ALSO MEANS WOMEN FEEL MORE MOBILE IN WATER women become overheated, it can effect the baby’s heartbeat. If there are any concerns about the mother’s observations or the baby’s heartbeat, she may be asked to leave the pool. If any excessive bleeding occurs or meconium is passed from the baby, she’ll be asked to leave the pool so the baby can be more closely monitored. In the pool, the baby is monitored with an underwater doppler device every five to 15 minutes, depending on the phase of labour. The mother may be checked with a vaginal exam or the practitioner may use an underwater mirror to check if the head is visible. When the time is right, she’ll be asked to push. The head will deliver, and shortly afterwards the shoulders, which may be with

The art of

swaddling

aving worked with hundreds of babies over the last 25 years, I know that by recreating the womb environment, swaddling for the first eight to 12 weeks helps most newborns settle, sleep and feel safe and secure. Newborns have no control over their limb movements until around 10 weeks old, so a swaddle prevents any involuntary movements from causing disturbances and unnecessary waking. Most newborns who manage to suck their fingers to self soothe have only managed it by accident – a one off! They tend to get most frustrated when they can’t find them again, which is why scratch mitts come in handy. However, a swaddled baby doesn’t need them. Another reason why swaddling works wonders is to prevent your baby being rudely awakened by the Moro reflex and startle response. These reflexes are a normal part of your baby’s neurological development causing them to suddenly jerk, flinging arms and legs out like a starfish. These responses has ruined many a peaceful sleep, but can be controlled by being cosily swaddled for naps. Since biblical times, babies have been

H

92 | baby-magazine.co.uk

swaddled in some form or another, with methods varying throughout the world’s cultures. Mothers have long known the calming qualities a swaddle can have as their little ones adjusts to the outside world. Swaddling came back in to fashion in the UK towards the end of the last century. I imagine one of the reasons was because parents were now being advised to put babies on their backs to sleep – this left those flailing limbs free to disturb the sleeping baby, and meant that startle reflexs woke the baby more easily. Babies quickly learn what the swaddle means and come to love the comfort it offers.

WHEN AND HOW Newborns who miss the womb environment can be swaddled from day one. However, many newborns are fine without for the first couple of weeks, but when they start to become more aware of their surroundings and don’t settle as easily swaddling may help.

Always place your swaddled baby on his or her back. A review of swaddling in relation to SIDS found that a swaddled baby is safer on their back than on their front or side – as in general safe-sleep guidelines. Swaddle your baby for all naps if needed, day and night. One of the best tips is to swaddle your baby then pick up for a cuddle, or rock in your arms. Swaddling first means that when baby relaxes and gets sleepy he is already cosy and easier to put down happily. My preferred method is a simple wrap, such as a large muslin square, or thin cotton jersey sheet in cooler weather. Fold a large square double into a triangle, lay baby with the back

MOTHERHOOD

IT’S A WRAP!

To stop baby getting too hot, only uses swaddles in light, breathable materials

of the neck along the long folded edge, place one of her hands on her tummy, and bring the cloth over her shoulder and wrap under her hip. Do the same on the other side. The fabric should be away from her face, making a V-neck sweater shape. Leave it loose around her legs and feet – no need to fold over or under – just let the fabric hang down. There are many newer style swaddling wraps and bags on the market. Look for cotton with an appropriate tog rating, depending on the time of year and temperature of your home. Specially designed products can be a lot easier to use if you don’t have the swaddling ‘knack.’ More like a bag than a wrap, the use of a zip or Velcro makes the process very easy, meaning a very wriggly baby is less likely to escape, and the swaddle effect is looser around the hips.

Whether you have the swaddling knack or not, there are lots of cosy and stylish designs available

swaddle at other sleep times, replacing the material with a sleeping bag shortly after.

PROS AND CONS Many babies settle more easily and sleep better when swaddled from birth to 12 weeks. It calms the Moro and startle reflexes, so the little one is less disturbed by them, and recreates the womb environment, making baby feel secure and reassured. However, overheating can be a cause for concern if inappropriate products are used, making the tot too warm. Swaddling too firmly around the hips can cause problems. There’s also potential for damage to normal hip development (hip dysplasia) if legs are firmly swaddled together in a straightened out position. A newborn’s hips are usually in a flexed position – opened out like a frog’s – which helps hip development.

SAFETY FIRST The latest safety advice, as detailed by The

PHOTOGRAPHY: ADEN + ANAIS

SINCE BIBLICAL TIMES, BABIES HAVE BEEN SWADDLED IN SOME FORM OR ANOTHER and arms: they thrash around a lot less and are starting to be able to find their fingers or thumbs to self soothe. It’s also recommended to remove the swaddle before the baby is able to roll. It isn’t easy to predict, but 12 weeks is a good benchmark to move away from it, as by then the practice has served its purpose. I’ve found that the best way is to gradually remove the swaddle, starting with the naps your baby settles easiest, then moving on to a half swaddle, before introducing a sleeping bag, or sheets and blankets. Half swaddling simply means that you leave babies hands and arms out of the swaddle, continuing to wrap around the tummy. If your baby finds that too much at first, try a threequarter swaddle with just one arm out. Once baby is settling well half swaddled for the easiest naps, then gradually start to half

Lullaby Trust (formerly FSID) is to use thin materials for swaddling, to not swaddle too tightly and to not let the swaddle come above the shoulders. They advise not letting baby get too hot, not covering the head, and keeping an eye on her temperature, checking this by placing your fingers on her chest or the back of the neck. Avoid swaddling your baby during feeding, as they can get too hot and their natural movements are restricted. The Lullaby Trust also stresses that parents must be made aware of the risk of wrapping baby too tightly and restricting the hips. The Royal College of Midwives generally advise parents to avoid swaddling, but note that individualised advice should be given to mothers to ensure they’re aware of how to keep their babies safe and free to move, as well as how to avoid overheating.

TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT

REFLUX

The sisters discuss the distressing digestive condition’s symptoms and solutions ll babies cry, some more than others, and some seemingly all the time. But when does excessive crying suggest that there might be a medical reason behind it? Reflux is when the muscle at the top of the stomach isn’t strong enough, allowing milk and stomach acid to travel up the oesophagus. It’s a mild occurrence for a lot of infants, causing vomiting or ‘possetting’ after a feed. For most little ones, it doesn’t cause much discomfort. However, when it’s severe it can be painful and even lead to worrying weight loss. Sometimes milk travels all the way up, causing them to vomit often, losing most of their feed and resulting in poor weight gain. Silent reflux is when acidy milk goes up and down the oesophagus. This can be very difficult to diagnose, as although these babies tend to scream all the time, they won’t vomit more than normal babies. Silent reflux is often confused with colic, as the symptoms are similar. Babies with both are clearly uncomfortable, but babies with reflux tend to scream all day long, while colic tends to affect babies more in the evenings. Colic can often be eased with over-the-counter remedies such as Infacol, and babies tend to grow out of it between 10 and 12 weeks. Many paediatricians believe we see reflux more nowadays because we’re likely to put infants to sleep on their backs. ‘Refluxy’ babies are more comfortable on their fronts, yet putting babies to sleep on their backs significantly reduces the risk of cot death. So, as tempting as it might seem to let your baby to sleep on her front,

don’t – it’s not safe. Most reflux can be diagnosed by a GP or a paediatrician simpy by talking to the mother and examining the baby. In severe cases, tests can confirm a diagnosis, but these are somewhat invasive so aren’t done routinely. The treatment for both reflux and silent reflux is the same. Many cases will need only simple measures, but others require prescription medication – commonly Ranitidine or Omepraole – to reduce acid production. It may help to keep your baby upright during and after feeds, and to pop her in a bouncing chair for naps. Feed little and often, particularly if she’s vomiting a lot. You can get feeding thickeners or special formula designed for babies with reflux. It is sometimes linked to cow’s milk-protein allergy, especially if your baby also has eczema, so your GP might suggest

a cow’s milk-free formula. If you’re breastfeeding, try excluding dairy from your diet for at least two weeks. Early weaning may help too; paediatricians recommend weaning ‘refluxy’ babies between four and six months. Other options include dummies, which encourage the baby to suck the acid back down, while cranial osteopathy can calm infants. Gentle pressure or a warm pad held against the tummy can also ease the discomfort of a bad spell. By coating the digestive tract, Gaviscon and sodium alginate will reduce symptoms. As miserable as it can be for both of you, the vast majority of infants grow out of reflux within the first six months or once established on solids, even without treatment. Most ‘refluxy’ babies will go on to be robust, happy toddlers that are full of beans and ready to explore the world!

Tongue-tie (or ankyloglossia) is a condition where the baby has a tight piece of skin (the frenulum), which tethers the underside of her tongue to the floor of her mouth. This can cause a number of feeding problems, such as preventing the baby from opening her mouth wide enough to latch on, sore nipples for the mother, difficulty in feeding, swallowing air and making a clicking noise when feeding. There are two main types of tongue-tie. The first is anterior tongue-tie, where the frenulum is too short and tight and extends too far towards the tip of the tongue. This is clearly visible and will often be accompanied by a V-shaped notch at the tip of the tongue. Posterior tongue-tie, however, is hidden under the lining at the base of the tongue. This is harder to diagnose but can be suspected if the tongue dimples down in the middle, or if the tongue appears to be very short. An anterior tongue-tie is treated by dividing it with a pair of sharp, sterile scissors, which is normally a quick, pain-free procedure. Tongue-tie can be treated on the NHS – just ask your midwife for details. Do note, however, that a tongue-tie only needs treating if it is causing a problem. The difficulty for the mother is knowing whether her breastfeeding problems are caused by a tongue-tie, or by the fact the baby is latching on badly. For this reason, it’s best to seek your GP’s opinion. Clare Byam-Cook, breastfeeding expert and author

HOW COULD MY BLOOD GROUP AFFECT MY PREGNANCY?

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

I’M 25 WEEKS PREGNANT, BUT MY BABY DOESN’T SEEM TO BE MOVING A LOT. IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH HER? It’s more important to pay attention to your baby’s own routine, rather than an average amount of movement you’re often told to expect. Bear in mind that every baby is different, so there is no ‘one routine fits all’ when it comes to pregnancy. Instead, it’s essential that you start to recognise your baby’s own specific patterns of movement rather than comparing yourself to others. Expectant mums generally start to feel movement from around 17 weeks of pregnancy. By 24 weeks the baby begins to have more definitive and distinguishable movements, and by 28 weeks there should be a discernible routine of movement and nonmovement. It is this unique pattern that mums should be aware of, and you should take note of any significant changes, too. Your baby may keep relatively still most of the day, but then become very active at night time, or vice versa. Make sure that you keep track of this and write down any changes you’ve noticed in your baby’s dayto-day movement. If your baby appears to be moving as much as they normally would, just be conscious of how these movements are building in strength. If you have any concerns, speak to your GP or midwife. Over the past decade our lifestyles have changed drastically and become far more hectic, and some mothers just aren’t aware of the risks presented by stress or how to monitor their baby’s routine. It’s therefore important that you try to stay as relaxed as possible during your pregnancy, as stress can have a number of effects on your unborn baby’s routine, development and wellbeing. Angela Spencer, baby wellness and childcare expert and founder of Babyopathy

Pregnant women are always given a blood group test. Essentially, there are four main blood types – A, B, AB and O. However, each can either be RhD positive or RhD negative, which means there are eight main blood groups in total. Mixing blood groups can be life-threatening, so you will always receive blood from the same blood group in hospital. In blood group A, for example, there are anti-B antibodies in the plasma, which would attack the cells in blood group B. While more than eight in 10 people in the UK are RhD positive, if a mother is RhD negative but the child inherits an RhD positive blood group from the father, it could cause complications if not treated in a timely manner. It is important to identify at-risk pregnancies early on, so women are usually screened during early pregnancy and again at 28 weeks, regardless of RhD status. If a woman is RhD negative, there’s a few considerations, such as partner testing, and potential steps that will need to be taken. Anti-D prophylaxis may be administered – which can actually be given to an RhD negative mother following birth to protect future pregnancies, too. Depending on your initial screening results, you may be referred to a specialist clinic for further investigation and detailed antenatal management. It is best to have a clear plan in place for your pregnancy – from the early stages through to labour and beyond – as each individual will have completely different circumstances. But there’s no need to worry; if your tests are organised by an experienced professional, you will be able to enjoy all the best bits of this special time and relax! HOW CAN I ADD VEGETABLES INTO MY EIGHT MONTH OLD’S DIET? With increasing reports about babies needing to experience genuine vegetable flavours (not just vegetable or fruit blends) from their earliest food tastes, packing a variety of greens into your little one’s diet is a great way to boost your whole family’s intake. Many nutritionists actually believe we should be aiming higher than the five-a-day mantra. Here are some ways to help: • Line a roasting dish with foil, and cut several sweet potatoes, carrots and parsnips into long batons. Drizzle over a glug of olive oil, and sprinkle over a couple of teaspoons of dried or fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme or sage. Roast for 35 minutes at 180˚C. Perfect with a meal or as a snack, the veg will last several days in the fridge and can be enjoyed by everyone. • Raw vegetables cut into batons and served with dips are a great way to feed your family (and good to add to your own lunch box as well). Or why not add more vegetables to the dip itself? Whizz a cooked beetroot or olives into shop-bought hummus, or purée cooked peas and spinach into cream cheese. • At mealtimes, put vegetables into a small bowl as a ‘starter’ while you get the rest of the food ready. Try carrots, cucumber or broccoli. • Quick veg- and egg-packed meal options include omelettes, frittatas and fritters, which are all one-pan dishes that can be whipped up using frozen, canned or grated veg like sweetcorn, peas, courgettes or carrots mixed with egg and a little cheese. CLOCK CHANGE

wo o’ clock in the morning on the last Sunday in October is a time many parents dread, especially if their child is already an early riser. What was 5.30am start will overnight become a 4.30am start, and equally for parents whose children take a long time to go to sleep, the clock change will also play havoc with bedtime. So, what exactly can you do to minimise the disruption to sleep in your household?

T

PREPARE YOUR CHILD’S BODY CLOCK About two weeks before the clock change, start putting your child to bed 15 minutes later than usual. After three nights of this, shift their bedtime again by another 15 minutes. Continue repeating this process until the bedtime has moved an hour later. Your child may still wake at the same time in the morning, but by slowly shifting their body clock, you will find they’ll soon adjust. Nap, meal and milk times will all need to be adjusted, too.

LET THE LIGHT IN Light has the biggest influence on our body clocks. Get your child outside in the afternoon light, as this will help to keep them awake that little bit later at bedtime.

WIND DOWN BEFORE BED An hour before sleep, encourage your child to have a wind-down time. Do something relaxing before you start their bedtime routine, but try to avoid any screens – research shows that this can interfere with the production of melatonin (the sleep hormone).

BEDTIME ROUTINE About 30 minutes before your child goes to sleep, carry out the same series of steps every night, so you begin to develop a regular bedtime routine. Try the following:

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

Sweet Dreams Peter £2.99, beatrix-potter-shop.co.uk

• A warm bath Have a relaxing bath that lasts no longer than 10 minutes. However, a bath before bed should not be misconstrued as playtime, as this could over stimulate your tired child. Start getting them ready for bed immediately after bathime is over. • Bedroom lights Dim the lights in the bedroom ready for your return from the bath, as this will help with the production of melatonin. • Story time Read one or two quiet stories or sing a gentle lullaby. Have a cuddle and kiss goodnight, then tuck them in with their favourite toy. • Time to sleep Once they’re feeling drowsy, leave the bedroom so they learn to fall asleep independently. Your child should be asleep about 15 minutes later.

MORNING It is best to delay your child’s milk and breakfast by 15 minutes every few days, too, so they don’t wake early expecting food.

IS IT TIME TO GET UP? To help your child know when they can get up in the morning, set up a lamp with a low-watt bulb and plug this into a timer switch in their room. Set the light to come on 15 minutes later than they would normally get up. Explain that they must stay in bed until the light comes on in the morning, even if this means you have to stay in the room with them in the beginning. If your child stays in bed until the light changes, give them kisses and cuddles to show how pleased you are. As you shift bedtime later, move the time on the switch later. Don’t be tempted to move any quicker than this, as your child may struggle to wait and it won’t work.

A return to form FU EL YOU R POST-BABY R ECOVERY WITH A H E ALTHY DIE T, SAYS N UTRITIONIST Louise Pyne

ust as growing a baby places huge demands on your body, so does delivering one; and no matter what kind of birth you have, you’ll need plenty of time to recover. Taking adequate rest in between feeds and nappy changes, asking for help when needed, and prioritising your diet are all sensible steps that will help you to recuperate. Certain foods contain essential vitamins and minerals to speed up healing. From soothing aching muscles to minimising cramping and elevating energy levels to securing sleep, here are the nutrients you’ll need, and how to get them in to your diet:

J

IRON Blood loss during labour or giving birth to multiples will cause iron levels to drop. You’ll also lose blood (think a period, but a heavier flow), for around six weeks after giving birth. This can leave you feeling weak and tired, and may put you at a risk of anaemia, so it’s vital that you load up on this mineral in the weeks following childbirth. The good news is that it’s relatively easy to increase iron through diet and supplements. Diet picks: Lean cuts of red meat and green leafy vegetables, such as kale will boost iron levels. Vitamin C aids absorption, so pair them with sweet potato, broccoli or tomatoes.

upping levels of vitamin E can help smooth out your skin. When applied topically, vitamin E can work wonders, helping to eradicate dryness and leave your skin glowing. It’s also really beneficial in food form. Diet picks: Taking a teaspoon of solid coconut oil daily will improve skin elasticity. Eating avocado mashed on toast, a handful of sunflower seeds, and olive oil as a salad dressing are all quick vitamin E boosts.

COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES If you’re breastfeeding you’ll burn around 500 extra calories a day, which means it’s important that you eat around the clock. However, even if you’re not, you’ll need

your abdominals tighten up again, you may experience backache. Magnesium can help to alleviate niggles, as the trace mineral works as a relaxant, soothing pains and spasms. Diet picks: Get your fix with leafy greens, such as Swiss chard and spinach, as well as almonds and pecans. Add Epsom salts to your baths.

TRYPTOPHAN Newborns may sleep up to 18 hours per day, but their irregular sleep cycles mean you won’t be enjoying anything like that amount. You’ll probably feel constantly jet-lagged during those first few months, and resting when your baby sleeps is the best way to survive this sleep deprivation and recover from childbirth. If you find it difficult to drop off when your little one naps, tryptophan-rich foods can help: it’s the precursor to the hormone melatonin, which induces sleep. Foods rich in tryptophan will help you to relax and snooze when the opportunity arises. Diet picks: You can dose up by snacking on a banana or a cheese-and-turkey sandwich.

TAKING A TEASPOON OF SOLID COCONUT OIL DAILY WILL IMPROVE SKIN ELASTICITY

No matter how fit and healthy you were pre-pregnancy, skin changes are inevitable after having a baby. If you’ve had a caesarean, you’ll be left with a visible scar and during the weeks following childbirth, you may notice red stretch marks. These will fade over time, but

100 | baby-magazine.co.uk

MAGNESIUM It’ll take time for stretched tummy muscles to regain strength, so in the mean time, your body will compensate by putting extra weight on your back muscles. Until

OMEGA 3 As many as eight in 10 women experience the baby blues. A result of the dramatic drop in hormones after pregnancy, they can leave you feeling teary, anxious and restless. Omega 3 is thought to help because it assists in building healthy brain and nerve cells, which are necessary for regulating mood. Diet picks: Oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel are all great sources, so aim to have two to three portions per week. Brazil nuts and cashews also contain the good fat.

energy to keep up with newborn demands. Foods containing complex carbohydrates, such as wholegrain rice, wholemeal bread and pasta, will help to bulk out meals and fill you up more than those containing simple carbohydrates (white bread and white rice). Complex carbs take longer to digest and release energy at a steadier rate, so that you’re adequately fuelled to cope with the early stages of motherhood. Diet picks: Easy options are oats, cheese-salad sandwiches and spaghetti bolognese.

RUNNING HEAD

POSTNATAL PICK-ME-UPS These kitchen must-haves will help you to bounce back

PUMPKIN SEEDS Your locks may have looked their best while you were pregnant, but it’s not unusual to experience hair loss postpregnancy due to hormone changes. Nibbling a handful of pumpkin seeds daily will help top up levels of zinc, a trace mineral which plays a role in the DNA and RNA production required for normal division of hair follicle cells.

COCONUT WATER Drinking plenty of fluids is essential postpartum, and if you’re breastfeeding you’ll have an even greater need to fill up on H2O, as your body will produce breast milk more efficiently if you’re well hydrated. Sipping on coconut water’s a good way to vary your fluids. It’s not only super hydrating, it’s also rich in electrolyte minerals such as potassium which, help to alleviate cramping.

BLUEBERRIES Having a baby is an utterly joyful experience, but learning on the job does come with its fair share of stressful moments. Fill your fridge with blueberries to help when you’re feeling strained as they’re rich in vitamin C which becomes depleted through stress. The wonder fruit also boosts brain health, supports digestion and is high in antioxidants.

AVOID COD LIVER OIL AND VITAMIN A

While cod liver oil contains some omega 3, it also contains vitamins D and A. A build-up of too much vitamin A can lead to liver damage and serious birth defects. GET PLENTY OF OMEGA 3

Omega 3 makes up 20 per cent of your baby’s brain, helps prevent postnatal depression and lowers allergy risks. Get your fill with oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel and anchovies. EAT MORE FAT!

Good fat is crucial for your wellbeing and baby’s brain and eye development. Avocados, olive oil and grass-fed butter are great sources. CHOOSE CARBS WISELY

Lentils, chickpeas and beans are rich in fibre, fill you up and release energy slowly. LOOK AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Having suffered from both pre- and postnatal depression, I know how awful it is. Take care of your state of mind and watch for symptoms as they’re widespread and varied. ROAST HERBY MACKEREL WITH A WARM ASPARAGUS AND COURGETTE SALAD Serves 4 INGREDIENTS

• 4 x fresh mackerel (gutted, cleaned and de-scaled by the fishmonger) • Mixed fresh herbs, finely chopped (I used parsley and oregano this time) Lion Heart omega 3 liquid • 1 lemon (sliced) £47.50, barebiology.com • Olive oil • Maldon salt • 230g asparagus (I’d recommend around 4 spears per person) • 2 courgettes – cut into squares • Mixed leaves – a big bowl of washed rocket, METHOD lettuce and watercress Pre-heat the oven to 180˚C. Wash, pat dry • ¼ red onion and place the fish on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Drizzle the mackerel with olive oil, sprinkle some salt in to the fish and place SALAD DRESSING a few slices of lemon inside too. Sprinkle fresh • 4 tbsp olive oil herbs on the fish and in the cavity. • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar Wash the asparagus and courgettes, and • 1 tsp Dijon mustard snap the woody ends off the asparagus. Take • 1 peeled garlic clove another baking tray and line with baking paper. • Lemon (a few squeezes) Spread the asparagus and courgette out on • Salt and pepper the tray, and drizzle with olive oil and salt. • 2 tsp of Lion Heart omega 3 liquid (for an Put the fish, asparagus and courgettes into optional added health boost)

the oven and bake for 20 minutes – this is the golden time for fish, it works every time! Meanwhile, slice the red onion finely and mix in a large bowl with the leaves. To make the dressing, add the listing dressing ingredients – ideally including Lion Heart omega 3 liquid – to a jam jar, and shake until the mixture emulsifies. Pour over the salad and toss the leaves. Once the fish and vegetables are cooked, add the vegetables to the salad and toss again. Serve a whole fish per person with a drizzle of lemon juice, and salad on the side.

Rebecca Moore R EL A XE S AT TH E FAMILY-FRIEN DLY MIR AGGIO TH ER MAL SPA R E SORT IN GR EECE ut spa in the title of a resort and I’m sold. However, with an 18 month old in the mix, I’d already given up hope on achieving zen before I started packing. Remy was due his first summer holiday, and his lovely mother – my dear friend, Sam – more than deserved a break. And so, with our young charge and his not inconsiderable cargo in tow, we set off. With a flight at 5am, it made sense to stay near Gatwick the night before. We opted for the newly renovated Holiday Inn – a mere shuttle ride from the airport. After a comfortable night’s sleep, the tactical early flight paid off: a sleepy Remy dozed for most of the three-and-half hour flight to Thessaloniki in northern Greece. From here, our private transfer whisked us to Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort, taking around 90 minutes. I wasn’t familiar with mainland Greece, but after those spectacular road-trip views, I can assure you that the region’s peninsulas are as pretty as any of the country’s islands. The resort didn’t disappoint either. From first impressions through to check out, the hospitality was faultless. Needless to say, charming Remy was treated like a mini celebrity from arrival onwards. The staff attended to him with endless affection – even after things got off to a messy start with a projectile vomit during the first night’s dinner.

The family-friendly vibe really came into play at Miraggio’s Kids Planet. Split by ages, Remy enrolled into Pan’s Crèche – for children aged four to 24 months. To break the week up, we booked him in for three afternoon sessions. This allowed us spells of sipping Mythos beer and grazing on calamari by the adult-only pool. Our real dose of relaxation, however, was towards the end of our holiday. With Remy happily ensconced in kids’ club, we headed for the spa. I’ve been fortunate to have sampled some of the UK’s finest pampering hotspots, but Myrthia Thermal Spa – coupled with Halkidiki’s heat – meant we were blessed with a truly spoiling afternoon. Enveloped by the Aegean Sea’s azure panorama and stretched out on sun loungers, we soaked up some rays before cooling off in the geothermal-spring-water infinity pool. After a relaxing hands-on Miraggio Signature Massage, we were ready to resume parenting duties. The Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort not only delivered a restful getaway, it also gave our trio a week to remember: mornings spent skimming pebbles across the waves, taking Remy’s little hand on poolside adventures, and snuggling together on the plush bed after a delicious evening meal. Prices from £190 per night in a Junior Suite, miraggio.gr/en

A royal affair Take advantage of your maternity leave by spoiling yourself with a short pampering break close to home, says Georgina Blaskey

C

liveden House hit the headlines recently when bride-to-be Meghan Markle and her mother spent the eve of her wedding at this historic property. A couple of weeks later, I drove up the same sweeping driveway and felt a frisson of excitement. Even more regal in reality, the property was positively sparkling as I arrived, ready to be treated like a duchess. The house, which boasts more than 350 years of royal heritage, is now a five-star hotel owned by The National Trust, and operated by the owners of luxury Hampshire spa hotel, Chewton Glen. Just an hour outside London, and surrounded by 376 acres of magnificent National Trust gardens and parkland, it commands glorious panoramic views over the Berkshire countryside and the river Thames.

Following a ramble of the exquisite grounds, we went up to our Garden Wing room. With fresher interior design than some more traditional suites in the main house, it also boasts a private terrace with hot tub. The Cliveden Spa was revamped in 2017 and has re-opened alongside a brand new stateof-the-art building, which links the house to the spa within the walled garden. Screened by mellow brick walls covered with scented roses and lavender, this is a truly tranquil oasis where you can immediately switch off and sink in to a day of fluffy-robed relaxation. The Spa has an exclusive partnership with global beauty influencer Sarah Chapman, who’s renowned for her award-winning facials and luxurious yet scientifically advanced cosmeceutical skincare range, while The

The Spa has treatments that are suitable for mums-to-be, using a special pregnancy treatment chair-bed. Treatments are adjusted accordingly, with all the therapists expertly trained to create bespoke experiences, depending on what stage you’re at. The Rose Garden Experience is ideal for emotionally and physically tired souls, releasing tension and leaving skin hydrated and nourished, while The Garden Oasis Purifying Experience is designed to stimulate the body’s natural detoxifying process. Fully rested, restored and re-balanced, we dined at the Astor Grill. Set in the old stables, an equestrian theme determines the decor, with original stalls converted into booths. While my husband and I opted for a delicious salad and burger respectively, there’s a fine dining option of a three-course à la carte or eight-course tasting menu, under the watchful eye of chef André Garrett, for those wishing to truly indulge in the elegant surroundings. After a brilliant’s night sleep, we breakfasted in our dressing gowns on our terrace, then headed to the spa for one last dip in the pool before heading home. We might not have a lifetime of regal experiences ahead of us like previous guests, but it was fun to have a glimpse in to how the other half live! From £445 a night, clivedenhouse.co.uk

At Holy Mama, the on-site childcare means mums are free to enjoy morning yoga sessions

Go with the flow

A week-long mother-and-baby yoga break in Ibiza was just what new mum and founder of Motherkind, Zoe Blaskey needed

to the mums-only yoga session. The yoga itself was wonderful. Led by an experienced teacher and mum of three, it took place in the shady orange groves. Lots of gentle stretching was mixed in with more challenging flows and even a handstand lesson one day (which I gave my best try). After yoga, the mums all had an early vegetarian lunch. Taking time to eat and get to know each other without worrying about a little one felt like a novelty in itself. Then I’d be reunited with Jessie to give her a delicious purée lunch. We were free to do as we pleased in the afternoons, usually spending them exploring the beaches, chilling out at the villa or having a treatment at the neighbouring Atzaro spa (one is complimentary). There were two evenings of activities organised with babysitting included.

The first was meditation, which was bliss, but my favourite night was called Wild Woman. Dancing to amazing music and truly moving my body after months of feeling tense and tender felt like medicine. As the final day drew closer, I reflected on what amazing friends I’d made (we’re still in touch). I’d reconnected with myself, I felt even closer to my little girl and more rested than since before she was born. In the end, I guess I did feel like a holy mama. nboard the flight to Ibiza, I’m pretty sure I was the only one not on the G&Ts, but I didn’t care. My (always) very awake eight-month-old daughter and I were going to a week-long, mum-and-baby retreat, which promised daily yoga, childcare, treatments and relaxation, and it sounded like heaven. In the north of the island – miles from anything that even resembles a club – Holy Mama is run across three neighbouring villas. Each villa has a different focus: one where the essential childcare takes place, one for yoga sessions and one for mouthwatering meals. The accommodation is simple, with a beautiful communal outdoor space, featuring a huge Balinese daybed and a pool. At the opening circle, we all shared why we’d come. There was a real mix of nationalities and backgrounds, from the seasoned yogi to one-class-before beginners, but we were all looking for the same thing: space and reconnection. We were all handed affirmation cards, and mine said ‘The universe only trades up.’ I felt my shoulder relax. The schedule was the same every day: self-serve breakfast (juices, croissants, mueslis, yoghurts) in our own villas, and at 9am the nannies would arrive. I was a little apprehensive of how Jessie would take to being left with an new carer, but luckily they bonded quickly, and she was giggling on her nanny’s knee before I left. I practically skipped

Peak relaxation

A summer escape to the Alps is the ultimate destination for a child-free break, says mum-of-two Georgina Blaskey

S

ummer breaks for me have always meant sun, sea and sand, so relaxing at a French alpine resort wasn’t on my bucket list. However, as I ascended the road to the picture-perfect town of Megève, I realised I’d been a little hasty. At a relatively low altitude of 1,100m, it’s traditionally a ski playground for wealthy Europeans. However, The Four Seasons Megève offers wellbeing breaks which take advantage of all the resort has to offer once the snow has melted, such as hiking, mountain-top yoga, and horse riding. The small town is easy get around, meaning you can pack in outdoor pursuits and still have time to enjoy the hotel’s amenities. I began my stay with a light lunch on the terrace of the chalet-style hotel at Bar Edmond. The air – fresh, clean, pure, and infused with fragrant spring flowers – cleared my frazzled mum brain, and my body relaxed as I looked out at the peaks surrounding me. The Four Seasons Megève is owned by the de Rothschild family, and the current Baroness Ariane de Rothschild has closely overseen the hotel’s development and interior design. The result is a modern, elegant hotel with three restaurants, lounges, bars, and a wine cellar housing over 14,000 bottles of wine.

After checking in to my suite, which featured a walk-in wardrobe and wide balcony (with uninterrupted mountain views, of course) I headed to the spa. The largest spa in the Alps, its cosy, all-white decor reflects the purity of fallen snow. I had a tension-diffusing back massage and paraffinwax hand treatment, effectively resetting my body after the flight. Whether it’s mountains or beach, water is a must-have on a wellbeing break for me, and the pool didn’t disappoint, with its clever indoor-outdoor design. Dinner that evening was at Le 1920, a twoMichelin-Star restaurant run by chef Julien Gatillon. Accompanied by a selection of fine wine from the Rothschilds’ estates, my culinary journey roamed far and wide.

The next morning, I tried Watsu, a waterbased relaxation technique where an instructor gently moves your body in to different positions. It’s said that one hour of Watsu is the equivalent of four hour’s sleep, and I felt energised after my session. Which was just as well, as I soon found myself on a hike. My guide Sylvie’s contagious passion for the chocolate-box scenery allowed my inner Maria to blossom, and it was all I could do not to break in to a rendition of The Hills Are Alive. Gazing out at the glorious peaks, I pondered the mindset the mountains had offered me. Revived and restored, I felt more than ready for hectic family life again. Harry loves checking out Scandibørn’s latest stock

What inspired Scandibørn? We have close friends living in and around Copenhagen, so it’s been our go-to summer destination for about six years now. We love the whole ethos of Scandinavian living, as it places value on buying products that will last years and fulfil different needs as lives change. We spent a long time getting our home just perfect, and having children seemed to open the door to a whole set of eyesores that I didn’t want in our living room! There was a gap in the market for people who want to create playful spaces for their children that fit in with their contemporary homes. Maternity leave gave me the much-needed headspace to think about my career, the family life we wanted, and write a business plan. At around the same time my husband, James, was made redundant, so in 2016, we took a leap of faith and invested the very small pay-out in Scandibørn.

GRACE TINDALL Scandibørn’s co-founder talks about taking the start-up plunge, creative styling and the Scandinavian aesthetic that there are so many different ways to be creative. I discovered my passion for interiors when I moved into my first rented property. I found such joy in creating beautiful spaces, spending hours at flea markets and upcycling old furniture. Once we bought our first home there was no looking back! Describe a typical day for you. I’m always up at least an hour before the rest of the house – it’s my time to have a coffee in peace, plan for the day,

When did you discover your passion for interiors? I was never good at the arts, but I’ve learned

or go for a quick run. Chaos then ensues for an hour and half, with breakfast, nursery drop-off and the dog walk! I’m usually in the office for 8.30am, where I’ll take calls with the customer service team and the warehouse. The rest of the day is varied: I might be at the warehouse doing quality checks, making re-orders or sourcing new products. Running a business isn’t easy, but I feel so lucky to be doing what I’m passionate about – it doesn’t really feel like work.

How do you source brands? When I started Scandibørn, I wrote a list of key words about what the brand should be, so I go back to that when I’m undecided. Everything Soft ball pit we sell has to fit with £114.95 the Scandi aesthetic we

adore. Harry even helps with the product research, as we tend to try out items with him first. What has made you most proud? We’re just so proud of what we’ve achieved in just over a year: the great brands we sell, our social media following, our customers’ support and the awards we have won. Every positive review and customer Instagram post makes us so happy. Do you have any advice for budding entrepreneurs? Be passionate about what you do. Anyone can launch a website and stock great brands, but it’s the curation and customer experience that’ll set you apart from your competitors. It’s a real challenge to stand out online. What’s up next? The autumn/winter 2018 range is our immediate focus but we also have some very exciting developments we’re working on. I can’t share too much yet, but it’s going to help Scandibørn to continue to grow! scandiborn.co.uk
