festive frenzy with baby in tow. If this sounds familiar, check out Natalie Keeler’s piece on mum guilt on page 68: you’ll soon realise that you’re not alone. If you do happen to be spending this Christmas weighed down by precious cargo, you may be feeling somewhat stifled by all the yuletide cheer. On page 76, our fave duo Marina Fogle and Dr. Chiara Hunt share their tips on keeping calm through the chaos, and how to use yuletide to your advantage. And just because you’re sporting a bump doesn’t have to mean frumpy jumpers and baggy trousers. Head to page 50 for the brilliant Antonia O’Brien’s latest maternity-and-mum fashion fix. Lastly, this issue wouldn’t be complete without a jam-packed gift guide. Starting on page 54, we’ve got baby’s first Christmas all wrapped up, plus gift-ideas galore for mum and dad too. Merry Christmas, one and all!

I love working on a Christmas issue – not just because of all the treats that get sent into the office – but because it also allows me to reminisce about times gone by. It’s always been a big day in the Moore household. And as our family continues to grow in size, it’s wonderful to reignite the magic with little ones. I still remember the glee I felt unwrapping the Barbie Picnic Van that I’d so desperately wanted – those memories really do stick with you. So as the countdown officially commences, you’ll find festive fun on every page. As party season kicks off in earnest, celebrations are in full swing at Baby HQ. We’re still on a high from our fifth annual Baby Awards. This year’s ceremony was held at the elegant Searcys in Knightsbridge, where we were joined by friends and nominees. Champagne was quaffed, canapés devoured, and proud winners congratulated! A huge well done to those who won, but also a big thank you to our fabulous judges and those who entered. Turn to page 38 to read all about it! Christmas is all about laughter and joy, but for many new mums it can also bring about an insurmountable sense of guilt as you juggle the

RT Where were you born? I’m Liverpool born and bred. Any Christmas traditions? Very silly Christmas jumpers on Christmas Day and family PJs to open and wear on Christmas Eve – usually just as silly as the jumpers! What’s on your Christmas wish list? The very same thing that’s been on it for the last five years… that my two little boys have a lovely day full of memories and fun. See Ross’ festive photoshoot on p.42
Where were you born? In Cardiff, in the very deep snow. The army were on call taking families to the hospital! Any Christmas traditions? Gingerbread houses! I started when the children were small and will insist they carry on every year, even once they’ve left home. What’s on your Christmas wish list? A good rest after a very hectic year – priceless (and a Terry’s chocolate orange, obviously). Read Amy’s expert feeding advice on p.75
Where were you born? I was born at Freedom Fields Hospital in Plymouth. It’s since shut down, but I haven’t taken it personally. Any Christmas traditions? Last year I did the Christmas Day Swim in my hometown of Bude in Cornwall, and I’m planning to brave the waves again this year. What’s on your Christmas wish list? I’d love a pair of Veja trainers! A £500 POLARN O. PYRET GIFT VOUCHER Polarn O.Pyret’s sustainability goal is that each garment is worn by three different children
T&C’S: COMPETITION CLOSES AT 11.59PM ON 4 DECEMBER 2019
S
ince 1976, Swedish kidswear brand Polarn O. Pyret, has been making clothes that allow children to be children. This means a play-friendly design, with no details that rub or restrict movement, and that can be washed again and again. The company’s latest collection is full of festive cheer, and to celebrate the countdown to Christmas it’s offering one lucky Baby magazine reader a £500 voucher to spend on their easy-to-shop webstore. It’s easy to see why families have been loyally cherishing Polarn O. Pyret for over 40 years; the brand believes that fit, quality and safety give the best
foundation for its clothing collection, but it’s those extra well-thought-out details that give the wow factor. Little ones will love the additional touches such as a lovingly embroidered appliqué detail or a quirky button on the back. Sustainability is also a large focus, offering a wide product range in organic cotton and recycled materials, and continually developing more sustainable products. But the most
important aspect of the label’s sustainability work is that its clothes are made to be handed down from child to child. The brand’s goal is that each garment should be worn by at least three children, one after the other. This is so that you avoid buying more new clothes than necessary, which saves you money and, even better, saves the earth’s precious resources. Good luck! polarnopyret.co.uk

Izzy and H arry have cr eated a happ family life fo y r their two children So sweet! Kit and Lola walk to nursery together
MY ESSENTIALS You’ve been working with Aveeno Baby for almost two years now, owing to the fact your daughter, Lola, three, suffers from eczema. What was it like finding out that she had such sensitive skin? I was always concerned, as Harry’s [her husband] side of the family has eczema and his dad has bad urticaria [hives]. When Lola was four months old, she started to get dry patches on her skin, and, as a mum, you do feel worried about what you might be doing differently. I went to the doctors and was given steroids, and tried about six different other products, none of which resolved anything. But when Lola was one, I discovered Aveeno Baby, and that’s made such a difference. For my son Kit, who’s two, I’ve used the Aveeno Daily Care range religiously, so I think that’s built up a strong barrier on his skin. What’s their skincare routine like now? I use the Aveeno Baby Daily Care Gentle Wash in the bath,
IZZY JUDD
The violinist and author talks baby skincare, nursery interiors and writing her second book followed by the Baby Daily Care Moisturising Lotion. I also use a night-time balm for Kit, as he’s still wearing nappies, and the Dermexa range is perfect for Lola as it soothes eczema-prone skin. Aveeno’s Emollient Balm is ideal for dry patches, too, which she
often gets on her cheeks, on her arms and behind her knees. What advice would you give to parents going through a similar experience to you? Consistency is key, and you shoudn’t feel embarrassed or
ashamed that it’s happening to your child. Talking to other parents can help, as you may pick up tips you’ve never considered. I only learned recently that it’s much better to apply moisturiser to your child’s skin when it’s still a bit damp from being in the bath. Your new book, Mindfulness for Mums, is out in January. Can you tell us about it? The book essentially comprises short, simple exercises to help calm the chaos of motherhood. There are tips on how to manage all the things that can make you feel anxious and panicked, particularly when you’re juggling a lot, plus exercises you can do with your child. Writing it has been lovely, and while I’m not claiming to be a mindfulness expert, it’s also something that I’ve relied on to cope during one of the most challenging times of my life. Kit’s just started nursery. Is he

Lola and Kit are the best of friends
Kit’s spontaneous behaviour always makes Izzy smile
Which clothing brands do you enjoy dressing them in? I can’t get Lola out of a dress, and I don’t know why we’ve got anything else in her wardrobe! I like JoJo Maman Bébé, as it has a lot of practical jersey dresses that she can run around in. I’m also a fan of Zara Kids and Next, and I enjoy supporting smaller brands as well. When Lola and Kit were babies, I used to dress them in clothes from Fred & Noah. Any favourite interior brands for their bedrooms? We’ve just moved into a new house, so I’m about to do up their rooms. We love The Great Little Trading Company and Wayfair, but I need to have a proper look around to get inspiration. I also

want to do something interesting with the walls, so I’m going to look at Murals Wallpaper for some ideas. Where we were living before, all the storage was built in, but our new place is the opposite, so Harry and I need to figure out a few things first! What do you and Harry like to do for date night? In the evenings, we always end up feeling so tired and just want to veg out in front of the TV, so we’ve started having date afternoons. On our most recent one, we went to the cinema to Izzy loves having a spa treatment with her friends

than babies and children! What’s the best thing about being a mum? There’s something amazing about your child doing something so spontaneously that it almost catches you off guard. So, for instance, Kit’s just learned to say, ‘I love you’. My favourite thing is going into their bedrooms in the morning, and there’s every chance Kit could be having a little cry, but most of the time, they just have these big smiles on their faces because they’re so happy to see you. That links back to mindfulness as well, because they’re so present and in the moment, and there’s a lot we can learn from that.
Rope storage basket £24, gltc.co.uk
When you have time to yourself, what do you enjoy doing? I love anything wellbeing (hence my new book) and I’m really into exercising. And it’s great to go for a nice spa treatment with some friends. I miss having that interaction with them, and it’s good to have the chance to talk about something other

BABY AWARDS 2019
RE AD ON TO FIND OUT WHICH BR ANDS AND PRODUCTS HAVE BEEN CROWNED BEST IN THE COUNTRY, AS WE GIVE THE INSIDE SCOOP ON THIS YE AR’S PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS CEREMONY fter months of planning, nominating and voting by you, our loyal readers, the great and good of the pregnancy, baby and children’s industry came together in October to celebrate the Baby Awards 2019, in partnership with Care. Held at luxury venue Searcys in Knightsbridge, the evening saw a 120-strong crowd enjoy free-flowing champagne and delectable canapés as Baby and Little London publisher Caroline Scott and editor-at-large Kate Freud, took to the stage to announce this year’s much-deserved winners and runners up. Set up to champion excellence in every area of the industry, the awards comprised 23 categories in total, covering everything from pregnancy to fashion, newborn essentials to food, travel and toys. And while many of these were chosen by public vote, four of
the winners were specially selected by our panel of judges; vlogger and Celebrity Dad of the Year Jonathan Saccone-Joly, TV and radio broadcaster and Baby magazine columnist Neev Spencer, talent manager and illustrator Jakki Jones, co-founder of maternity-friendly brand Clary & Peg Edwina Gieve, and Baby’s editor-at-large Kate Freud. Our high-profile panel of judges came together at the wonderful family members’ club Maggie & Rose in Kensington, where the mums and dads rigorously tried and tested the products, highly scoring the products new and old that have added something to their own parenting journeys. We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate our winners and nominees, all of whom are at the top of their game and deserve to be applauded.

Help is at hand THOSE FIRST FEW MONTHS WITH YOUR BABY ARE BOTH SPECIAL AND CHALLENGING, BUT COLIEF CAN HELP YOU FROM THE START…
Colief Infant Drops can help ease the symptoms of colic so your baby sleeps peacefully

WHAT IS COLIC? Colic is defined as repeated episodes of excessive and inconsolable crying in a newborn baby who otherwise appears to be perfectly healthy. The condition can affect up to one

in five babies, so you’re not alone. Infant colic can have many causes. In some cases it is believed to be caused by temporary lactose intolerance. This is because in the first months of life, some babies are unable to fully break down lactose, a complex sugar in breast and formula milk. It can produce wind, bloating and cause discomfort, and one of the main symptoms is inconsolable crying. As any parent with a distressed, crying baby knows, colic affects a whole household, and can be very frustrating and upsetting for all involved. Let Colief bring you peace of mind so you can enjoy those first precious months with your happy and healthy baby. Colief Infant Drops are available at Boots, Superdrug, supermarkets and pharmacies nationwide: £11.99 (7ml), £15.99 (15ml). For more information, visit colief.com or facebook.com/ColiefCare
COLIC: TIPS AND TRICKS If you suspect your baby has colic, it can help to do the following: • Keep a cry diary • Try a one-week trial of Colief Infant Drops to help diagnose whether temporary lactose intolerance could be the cause Colief Infant Drops can help ease the symptoms of colic by breaking down the lactose in your baby’s milk, resulting in less discomfort. Add a few drops to the milk each time you breastfeed or use formula.

hen your newborn cries constantly and seems distressed, it can be very upsetting for you, not to mention tiring with all the sleepless nights. Although it is a worrying time, colic is common in babies and in a small number it may be caused by temporary lactose intolerance as their digestive system develops – this is where Colief Infant Drops can help. An effective dietary supplement that is added to infant milk, Colief has been tried and trusted by parents for 20 years. The active ingredient in it is lactase, a safe, naturally-occurring enzyme produced within the small intestine. In fact, it’s the only lactase enzyme with clinical studies supporting its efficacy. That’s why it’s the most commonly prescribed treatment for colicky symptoms.

INTERVIEW Since becoming a father, Tom has come to appreciate just what an important role that is

INTERVIEW
• TA L K I N G W I T H T O M H A R DY •
THE HARDY WAY Actor and dad of three, Tom Hardy on how he’s learning the lessons of old when it comes to fatherhood hey say, for most of us, we are brought up in the image of at least one of our parents, and where Tom Hardy is concerned, there is more than a hint of his father, Chips, present. Perhaps most obvious in resemblance is the 42-year-old actor’s chosen line of work – dramatic pursuits were always at the heart of an upbringing during which charismatic father Chips extolled his creative genius across diverse projects taking in comedy, TV drama and literature. That Hardy has gone on to forge a career so bullish, buoyant and, at times, controversial, arguably takes him up a level from his 69-year-old senior – not that he would admit that. “I look at my father and I feel he has given me good habits, positivity, optimism,” begins Tom. “What I’ve done with that is subvert it, rearrange it and, at times, taint it with who I am; but for some reason, people still think the end product is worthwhile,” he laughs. Certainly, Tom Hardy’s magnificently mysterious and unapologetically moody approach to his craft is every bit the same lure for movie fans as The Rock is a magnet for muscle, and Hugh Grant is the embodiment of the impossibly perfect upper-class English gent. Hardy’s is an approach that sits well with modern movie goers, across Legend, Dunkirk, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, through into new projects Fonzo (in which he stars as Al Capone), and the return of Eddie Brock in the sequel to Venom, due out next year. And yet, if the evolution of the Hardy image through the generations has taken us already to someone brooding, brazen and effortlessly cool, it does beg the question of what we might expect from his three children. The London-based actor and wife, Charlotte Riley, recently announced the arrival of their third child, Forrest. The little boy was born in December 2018 and joins his four-year-old sister, whose name has never been revealed to the public. Hardy also has an older son, Louis, born in 2008 from a relationship with producer and director Rachael Speed. As far as expectations for his children go, these are ideas to be kept private, understandably so; although you sense the subject isn’t something he has pondered over for too long anyway. “I think there is a big temptation to create our children in our own shadow,” he offers. “I get that, because, in many ways, it is a natural thing to want to do. It kind of shapes where you think they might go and what you want for them, and it’s also a way of protecting them from the unknown because, obviously, you know that world and you know what to expect. Ultimately, though,” he pauses, “it’s nonsense, isn’t it? I mean, pretty

much as soon as they arrive, you appreciate the fact these incredible little people are their own entities and, for the most part, they will do exactly what they want… and actually, that’s what you want, too.” In interviews, Hardy has already described fatherhood as his greatest achievement. He accepts he remains in awe of his children, and readily admits he struggled to come to terms with the incessancy of dad duties in the early days. “It can be difficult because there is no one there to guide you through. I think every parent, at first, acknowledges they are doing okay, but they’ll still then have random bouts of uncertainty where even the simplest of tasks can appear impossibly difficult. And sure, yeah, it’s hard – but it’s meant to be. It would be wrong if it was easy and you had it under control from the off.” What Hardy will have a finger on is the certainty that his kids will grow up secure in the protection of the family unit. “I had my struggles growing up with my father, and I made the effort to repair that probably later than I should have done,” he says. “Do I regret that? Of course. And more so now because I can see the joy and the importance of sharing those experiences now I am in that position. “I think sometimes it’s only when you become a father that you realise how important that job is – it’s definitely opened my eyes to the whole thing… to how I should be as a father and to how I was as a son. It’s very cleansing, and it makes you realise that whatever happened in the past is irrelevant because it’s the future that counts.” What makes Hardy so engaging is his wicked ability to switch between brooding and brilliantly funny. Even in interviews, you sense the Londoner is only ever a stray question away from either losing his temper or bursting into laughing. “I think people take me far too seriously,” he notes. “Perhaps that’s because I used to take myself a lot more seriously. I realise now, though, I have become a more mellow person, and a lot of that is down to fatherhood. You accept nothing is as important as your children, and nothing else really matters. “The selfishness evaporates almost overnight; commitment and passion flows through you and the compassion… well, that is the big one. The real world is your family – everything else… not important.” It seems that while, by his own admission, Hardy’s parents struggled for the benefit of bringing him up, the actor is happy to let the lessons of those days shape his future. “If I suffer as a father, it’s through being too protective. “I don’t want to be a forceful, controlling dad; but I do want my kids to know I am there with them every step of the way.”

THE REVIEW
Danielle Wilkins AND FIVE-MONTH-OLD Max TRY THE MAXI-COSI AXISSFIX PLUS CAR SE AT FOR SIZE
C
arrying a car seat up and down the 24 steps to our London flat wasn’t an option when Max was born, so it made sense for us to make a purchase that’d stay fixed in our car and – ideally – last a while. Maxi-Cosi’s AxissFix Plus not only stood out because it grows with baby from birth to four years, but it’s one of a handful of designs that offers the 360-degree swivelling seat. And who doesn’t need that when carrying a grizzly newborn and 10 tonnes of baby luggage while battling sleep deprivation, or an objectionable toddler, for that matter?
Max settles down for a spin in the family car
SAFETY Complying with the latest i-Size safety regulations and with rearward-facing travel up to two years, this seat felt secure from the moment we left the hospital. OK, I’ll admit I sat in the back for our first car journey as a three but, really, there was no need. The cosy, padded inlay, shoulder pads and five-point harness meant Max looked safe and snug, and I needn’t have worried. The top tether is an additional safety feature, and though I’d heard stories of babies fiddling with this, I’ve no reason to believe Max has even noticed it yet…
USABILITY It’s the 360-degree rotation that really makes this car seat top dog, in my opinion, and I imagine it’ll only become more useful as he grows into a toddler. If I turn the seat to face the car door, I can strap Max in easily without having to put any pressure on my

back. To rotate, simply use the handles under the chair’s base. It’s also really easy to install (with the Isofix ports, it quite simply clicks into place) and doesn’t feel like it takes up too much room in the back. The straps extend well – making it really easy to get a wriggling baby in and out – though in the early days when we used the newborn inlay, securing the harness sometimes proved difficult as the padding would get caught. It’s much easier now.
COMFORT We’re lucky – Max is a real snoozer the minute we get in the car and I’m pretty sure that’s thanks to this seat. The cushioned headrest and recline feature allows him to doze off without hurting his neck or falling forwards. It looks super-comfy, but he’s five months now and already filling it, which makes me question whether it’ll last until he’s four years old. n perfect for whe d headrest is ne io ad sh ro e cu th he T ZZs on catch some Z Max wants to

was ‘please don’t be sick in it…’ (he was – luckily it was easy to wash off ). I personally love the look – it’s not too cumbersome and the quality of the fabrics is everything you’d expect from the Maxi-Cosi label. Next year we’ll definitely invest in the summer cover bundle though. The snugness of the seat meant Max sometimes got a little sweaty in the warm weather – plus we could do with extra protection from grubby hands!
THE VERDICT If you want a fixed car seat option (as opposed to anything travel-system compatible) from birth, I’d highly recommend AxissFix Plus. Its comfort, safety and easy installation are all big ticks, but the swivel concept is a gamechanger – and Max seems to love it just as much!

Little lifesavers ETHICAL AND SUCCESSFUL, Biovault Family EXPL AINS THE BENEFITS OF CORD BLOOD STOR AGE – A LIFE INSUR ANCE POLICY FOR YOUR CHILD THAT YOU’LL HOPEFULLY NEVER HAVE TO USE Your baby’s generation will grow up with a new life-saving health insurance, thanks to the stems cell in their umbilical cord
new generation of babies is growing up protected by an exciting new kind of health insurance. This protection is unique to your child’s needs, entirely organic and potentially life-saving. Stem cells are extraordinary, and the ones left in your baby’s cord blood after birth are especially powerful, with the ability to regenerate any damaged blood cell in the body. No wonder so many parents are now storing their children’s cord blood instead of allowing it to be thrown away.

THE BEST CHANCE IN THE WORLD
PHOTOGRAPHY: KNPHOTOGRAPHY.UK
In November 2018, The Apprentice winner Ricky Martin and his wife Gemma became parents for the first time. Like all parents, the couple were determined to do everything in their power to keep their new baby safe. As a biochemist and CEO of a successful STEM business, Ricky knew that birth offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to store umbilical cord blood. After much research, he and Gemma decided to not just store Alexander’s stem cells, but to also share their story to make other parents aware that we routinely throw away a natural resource that saves lives.“Cord blood banking is a way of protecting ourselves as a family,” says Ricky, “I now have the confidence that if anything unexpected happens, Alexander has the support of science. We hope we never need to call on stem cell support but we’d like to know that we can. Our journey with Biovault Family was about giving Alexander the best possible chance in the world.”
A PROVEN TREATMENT Cord blood stem cells can currently treat: • Blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. • Blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, aplastic anaemia and fanconi anaemia. • Immune disorders like SCID and WiskottAldrich syndrome. • Metabolic disorders such as Krabbe disease
and Hurler syndrome. • Solid tumours like neuroblastoma Trials are also underway for cord-blood therapies for cerebral palsy, breast cancer, HIV, diabetes, as well as nervous-system disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s.

GIVE BACK
SHOPPING WITH A CONSCIENCE HAS NEVER BEEN E ASIER . Natalie Keeler LOOKS AT THE L ABELS SELLING ST YLISH WARES FOR A NOBLE CAUSE s the festive season draws near, it’s natural to get into the spirit of giving back. What’s truly wonderful, however, is that a number of children and family-orientated fashion brands are now following suit, making a real difference to society and people’s lives. Whether it’s empowering fellow parents to care for their babies, contributing to beating world hunger or poverty, or supporting another cause closer to home or to their hearts, these are the companies making people look and feel good, simply by doing good. Here, we’ve spotlighted just a few of the brands going that extra mile.
A
MORI When this innovative baby brand learned that 37 per cent of children in London are living in poverty, and that at least £3,500-worth of clothes per UK child is thrown away every year, it set about creating The Kindness Project. Working in partnership with local charity Little Village, the initiative asks parents to donate their unwanted MORI products, so they can go to a family who needs them – be it sleepsuits, bodysuits, cardigans, T-shirts, leggings, swaddles bags or bedding. Better yet, when you send in one or more items, you’ll receive MORI credit in return. Giving back has never felt so good! babymori.com
FRUGI This colourful Cornish label has always put the planet first, so it stands to reason that much of its charitable giving is targeted at helping the environment. As well as offering continued support to The Cornwall Wildlife Trust and an orphanage in India, not to mention donating one per cent of its turnover to charity (regardless of whether it makes a profit), Frugi’s Little Clothes Big Change campaign has also proven hugely impactful; customers simply need to ‘vote’ for one of three charities at
checkout, after which the votes are turned into much-needed cash for each cause. All in all, the brand has donated £580,000 to charity over the past 15 years – quite an impressive feat… welovefrugi.com
RACHEL RILEY Known for its beautiful, well-made childrenswear, this London-based label announced an exciting new collaboration with Theodora Children’s Charity in September, which aims to bring joy to sick and disabled children in hospital. For every sale of the designer’s heart-themed garments in the AW19 collection, Rachel Riley will be donating £1 and encouraging customers to do the same at checkout. The funds raised will go towards the charity’s Giggle Doctors, who visit the children and offer them a distraction from the distress of being in hospital. rachelriley.co.uk
THE FMLY STORE Founded by Molly Gunn, aka mum blogger Selfish Mother, in the hope of using fashion as a force for good, The FMLY Store has something for everyone. In January 2019, it announced that it’s donated almost £1.1m to various charities over the years, including Tommy’s The Baby Charity, Save the Children, KIDS, and Starlight UK, as a result of sales made from its online shop, where you can buy everything from slogan T-shirts to printed frames and giant tote bags. Keep an eye out for its festive jumper sale, too, which features a collection of slogan sweaters made especially for Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day. thefmlystore.com
TOMS 64 | baby-magazine.co.uk
FROM BABIES WITH LOVE Working in partnership with the charity SOS Children, this social enterprise goes above and beyond to support orphaned and abandoned youngsters all over the world; so much so that it’s raised over £100,000 since 2013. Through its efforts, toddlers who would have otherwise been left to fend for themselves are cared for and educated in a family environment, and the brand’s founder, Cecillia Crossley, donates 100 per cent of the company’s profits to ensure this happens. To contribute, shop the boutique’s babywear and gifts, from organic cotton babygrows, hats and bibs, to beautiful muslins and wooden toys. frombabieswithlove.org
TOMS Already a well-known philanthropic fashion label, TOMS’ One For One campaign provides much-needed essentials and services to people living in poverty across the world. For every shoe purchase made, the label donates a pair, while each bag purchase results in the delivery of vital materials to help women in need give birth safely. The brand also donates prescription eyewear or sight-saving surgery with all eyewear purchases, and a week of clean water with all TOMS Roasting Co products. toms.co.uk
TAO & FRIENDS Since its debut in 2016, this brand has become known for its super-soft organic cotton designs, animal prints, and use of eco-friendly materials. However, its commitment to giving back goes much further than its sustainable ethos, and the label has been lauded for its support of various children’s charities, including The Winnicott Foundation. Clothing purchases see €1 per item sold go towards chosen causes, with a new organisation selected every year. taoandfriends.com.

rom cute outfits to personalised gifts, nothing quite tops the list like baby’s first Christmas. But remember, this time of year is all about creating memories, so you don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive presents. Focus on keepsakes and fun crafts that you can enjoy together to ensure your Christmas is one to remember. Babies love lights! So be sure to go all-out with your festive décor this year and fill your home with lots of twinkling candles (LED ones are more baby-friendly), fairy lights and lit-up decorations. Don’t miss your chance to get creative with baby’s first stocking. You might choose to try making your own, or buy one and embroider it with your little one’s name. This – and a personalised tree decoration – will be something you can hold on to for years to come. Why not design and make your own Christmas cards this year, using either a photo of your baby or a painted foot or handprint? The hard part will likely be choosing which photo to use! Be sure to get an adorable snap of your little one on the big day too, to use for next year. Finally, this is the perfect time to start new family traditions – just like your parents did when you were children. From making Christmas Eve boxes to writing letters to Santa, or even making your own tree decorations, pick something you can all get stuck into together.

PARENTING
THE GUILT TRIP SUFFERING FROM FEELINGS OF MUM GUILT? YOU AREN’T ALONE. HERE, Natalie Keeler LOOKS INTO THE MODERN PRESSURES OF PARENTHOOD y parents tell me that when I was one-and-a-half and crying for attention one night – a regular occurrence, apparently – my dad had to stop my mum from going in to check on me. “She has to learn to cope without you,” he said. And so, she stayed, and the next morning they both walked into my bedroom to find the reason I’d been crying was because I’d climbed out of my cot and fallen into my toy box, got stuck and had – owing to lack of any assistance – given up and sobbed myself to sleep, buried by my toys. My mum still talks about the immense guilt she felt after finding me wedged in beside my box of wooden puzzles and a swarm of stuffed teddies. That, among going back to work seven months after my brother was born, failing to prevent my fussy eating habit, and losing her temper with me on countless occasions, she admits made her feel genuinely terrible at the time. This, of course, isn’t unusual. For many, motherhood and guilt are two things that go hand-in-hand, with a survey from NUK finding that of the 2,000 mothers interviewed, 87 per cent have felt guilty at some point, while 21 per cent experience these feelings “most” or “all” of the time. Mother of-one Julie Rowlands from Surrey explains that her first experience of mum guilt was when she should have been having the “best time of her life”, at home with her
M
newborn baby. “I wanted my job back and my body back. I resented my partner going back to work after a couple of weeks and cried when he left. And I just found being at home with a baby a bit boring, and felt awful for it.” Natasha Dawson, who lives in Leicester and has a daughter, experienced guilt four months into her breastfeeding. “My baby wasn’t sleeping well, and I was getting a lot of pressure from my mother-in-law to give her formula because she thought she was hungry. I felt so guilty that my breastmilk wasn’t enough and that I wasn’t managing her milk
or judgements from fellow mums or even strangers, feeling guilty seems to have become a totally normalised side effect of parenting that everyone experiences; for some, it can feel completely inescapable. During this festive season, mum guilt has a way of creeping into our lives more so, as fears over whether we’re drumming up enough ‘Christmas magic’, or buying enough (or even the right) gifts, set in. That, paired with missing your child’s nativity because you can’t get time off work, or losing out on family time thanks to the office Christmas party, can mean guilty feelings hit a worrying peak at this already stressful time of year. So, why exactly are mothers giving themselves such a hard time? And is the case the same for dads? Dr Victoria Khromova, child psychiatrist, parent coach and founder of advice service Emerging Parent, believes that parents tend to make erroneous judgements about what they are and aren’t responsible for. “They either overestimate their influence or exaggerate in their minds how much a particular behaviour will affect their child. So, they end up trying to get everything right, which is obviously an impossible task.” She adds that, although there’s research to suggest dads in dual-earning families do feel a similar level of magnitude of guilt, women are more at risk to guilt than men as they typically experience higher levels of empathy. Midwife and mum-of-four Clemmie Hooper (aka @mother_of_daughters) agrees. “I think

intake properly. I ended up making use of the Breastfeeding Helpline, which gave me the confidence boost I needed.” For Caroline Strachan, who lives in London with her six-year-old twin daughters, feelings of guilt crept in when she returned to work. She had a senior role in a large global company and felt dreadful for wanting to go back. “I’d sometimes run home from the train station so I didn’t miss bath or bedtime. I just assumed this was normal, but it got pretty ridiculous.” Be it the high expectations set on social media, the stats that tell us of the ways in which we’re ‘stunting’ our baby’s development,

GUILT IN ITS MOST POSITIVE FORM SIMPLY EQUATES TO AN INTENSE KIND OF CARING
PARENTING FIGHT THE FEELING Dr Victoria Khromova offers her tips on how to handle the mum-guilt complex • Educate yourself. Focus your limited time and energy on key areas that you already know will make a difference to your child’s wellbeing. • Accept that you’re only human. Transient feelings of anger, wanting to escape, or needing to prioritise other matters over your baby are all perfectly normal. They’re not going to scar your child for life. • Look after yourself. This is easier said than done, but exhaustion and general levels of unhappiness are only going to skyrocket your guilt. It’s better to be rational when you’re well rested. • Manage hard choices in the right way. You don’t have to be with your baby at all times, and if you do have to return to work early, consider what is going to be best for you if you need to factor in childcare.
As a loving, caring mother, you only want the best for your baby
being the ‘vessel’ that carries your child during pregnancy is why mums can carry feelings of guilt where men don’t. “From the moment you’re pregnant, you’re overloaded with information,” she adds. “From what you should and shouldn’t be eating, how much exercise you should be doing, whether you should opt for certain scans, so I think that’s where mum guilt begins. That sudden rush of responsibility can be overwhelming.” Is there anything women can do to avoid it? Clemmie doesn’t think so. “Guilt is just part of being a parent,” she says. “The important thing is that you talk to people about what you’re experiencing. Voicing how you’re feeling to
someone can help you start to feel better.” Kerry Spencer, who’s from London and mum to one-year-old Sebastian, feels similarly. “I still feel guilty all the time, particularly if I’m travelling for my job. Everyone experiences it in different ways, but talking to someone helps. If your guilt stems from returning to work, speak to your employer about flexible working options.” Anna Whitehouse, mum to two daughters and founder of Mother Pukka, says she overcame her feelings of guilt by acknowledging that she’s doing her best. “Other than worrying about how many vegetables they eat, the most crucial thing is
to trust your instinct. With all the books, blogs and voices in the parental world, it’s easy to lose sight of how you feel.” Maybe motherhood guilt can’t be swerved, but it seems it can be combatted with the right approach. No, your child won’t be forever damaged by formula if you’re struggling to breastfeed, nor will they be eternally scarred by an afternoon of screen time if you have other tasks to juggle. Guilt in its most positive form, says Anna Whitehouse, simply equates to an intense kind of caring, and a deep-rooted love that makes you just want the best for your baby. And who would ever want to get in the way of that?

ello! My new life as a mum to two daughters is going well and the past few weeks has been all about fitness and bringing strength back. I started with yoga and found an amazing woman called Lucy Howlett who specialises in pregnancy and postnatal yoga. Just taking one hour a week to focus on myself, on my breath, and lengthening the body makes a big difference to the aches and pains that come with caring for two children with such varying needs. With balance restored, I started on a healthy fitness regime and called upon an old friend, Jane Wake, a leading expert and trainer in pre and postnatal exercise. She’s been helping me to adopt the right approach, releasing tension and working on inner core strength. Naturally, with this focus on health, I’m now eating a lot better, too, making sure I have the right nutrients but also enough calories to slowly lose my baby weight but also continue breastfeeding Vivienne. It’s really important to get back into fitness or diet plans gently, as drastic changes are not advised when your postpartum. Finding time to cook has been tricky, but I’ve been using Mindful Chef. Having someone select great ingredients and deliver straight to your door is such a help when parenting two children. Our latest gadget in the home is an Abode hot water filter tap; it has made bottle feeds for the baby much easier. Having filtered water direct from the tap has been a luxury and knowing we are doing our bit for the environment to reduce plastic makes it a huge tick. orking as an acupuncturist, I have a huge belief in Chinese medicine and the link between how your mind, emotions and mental health, as well as body and spirit, can have an effect on your developing baby. Having trained as a midwife in the 1980s, the model was very biomedical, and while there was a focus on the health of the mother and baby, it really only started when the baby was delivered. We now know so much about how the mind, nutrition, stress and anxiety can have an impact on the future health of the baby, as well as an understanding that there are opportunities for growth in each trimester.

SECOND TRIMESTER By now, you’re probably in the swing of things, with more energy and a renewed sense of wellbeing. Now’s the time to start communicating with your baby on a deeper level. Introduce your baby to your favourite music, sing and talk to her, tell her how much you’re looking forward to holding her – make a connection on a personal level. Find a private area, where no one can overhear you and spend some quality time with your baby.

Now that so much more is known about babies, both in the uterus and at birth, we can see that the relationship you forge with your baby when she arrives can be a continuation of the connections that you began when you were first pregnant. In this last trimester, your baby is both physically and mentally mature enough to send and receive signals from you and those closest to you. You can use touch and sound to send messages to her and respond to her movements, too. If a loud noise startles her and she kicks, you can soothe her with your voice and caress your abdomen. It’s thought that by communicating with your baby in the uterus, you may boost her intelligence and lessen the risk of her developing ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Playing music (particularly classical) to your unborn baby is also thought to promote intellectual development – perhaps by stimulating more connections to be made between the neurons. Music that babies hear often during their mother’s periods of pregnancy relaxation has been shown to be familiar to them once they’re born, and, importantly, soothe distress.

BREASTFEEDING
The Breastfeeding Café with
PROFESSOR AMY BROWN
THIS ISSUE WE ASK:
I’M BREASTFEEDING AND AM NOT SURE WHETHER I CAN HAVE AN ALCOHOLIC DRINK OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD. WHAT DO YOU ADVISE?
T
he good news is, yes, you can breastfeed and still have an alcoholic drink. Very little alcohol actually reaches your baby. Alcohol enters your breast milk at the same level it is in your blood. Although it differs between individuals, roughly a large glass of wine (three units) for the average-size woman would give you a blood alcohol level of 0.08 per cent (putting you just over the drink drive limit in England and Wales). However, your breastmilk alcohol level will match your blood alcohol level, so your breastmilk would only have around 0.08 per cent alcohol in it. To put that in perspective, any drink with 0.05 per cent or less alcohol in it is considered alcohol-free, and anything between 0.05 per cent and 1.2 per cent is considered low alcohol. If you had a blood/milk alcohol level of 0.4 per cent, you would probably be dead from alcohol poisoning! After one large glass of wine, your milk will still pretty much be ‘alcohol free’, and it would be physically impossible for your milk to ever be as alcoholic as low alcohol beer. If you are concerned about any alcohol at all reaching your baby, remember that it takes at least 30 minutes for alcohol to reach your blood stream. This
means that actually having that glass of wine while feeding means there is unlikely to be any alcohol left in your milk at all by the next feed. The main reason not to drink too much alcohol is if you will still be caring for your baby. The biggest risk of drinking too much is that you might drop or harm your baby in some way. If you have drunk any alcohol recently, do not co-sleep with your baby. There is no need to ‘pump and dump’ your milk as it does not work to remove any traces of alcohol. While alcohol is still in your blood, any milk being produced will continue to have that level of alcohol in it. So, if you remove milk, you will simply produce more. Alcohol will leave the milk at the same rate it leaves your body – around an hour for each unit you drink. If you are concerned, just wait to feed your baby. There are tests you can buy to see if there is any alcohol in your milk. These are very sensitive and will turn positive even with a reading of 0.01 per cent. Again, if you are concerned at any trace of alcohol in your milk, it’s better just to wait. TIPS FOR FEEDING AWAY FROM HOME • Ideally, you should feel comfortable feeding wherever you want, but we know that sometimes others can act awkwardly. If you suspect someone might be difficult, ask family to explain to them in advance that you will be feeding and why, and if they don’t like that – they are the one who is free to leave. • It’s lovely that others care so much about your baby and want to give them a cuddle. But remember, it’s OK to ask for your baby back if others are holding them and they’re showing signs of needing a feed. This is especially important in the early weeks when you are both getting to grips with feeding. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Feeding a baby can be hungry and thirsty work. But it’s also an excellent reason to make yourself comfortable and have everyone look after you. • Your baby might feel a bit overwhelmed at so many people being around. Taking them off to another room can help calm them down to feed, even if you usually wouldn’t feel a need to feed in private. This can also be an excellent excuse if it’s you needing a break!

TIME TO TALK with MARINA FOGLE & DR CHIARA HUNT
CHRISTMAS PREGNANCIES The sisters give advice on keeping calm throughout the festive chaos
regnancy is always challenging at some point. Let’s face it, growing a new human being, capable of living, breathing and thinking is never going to be straightforward, but somehow the festive period seems to add an additional layer of stress and complication. Christmas parties are often the time when people let their hair down, fuelled by cocktails you can’t have. Being around drunk people is challenging at the best of times, but swollen ankles, a baby that’s kicking you in the ribs, a perpetual need to pee and hot flushes into the mix, and Christmas can be a killer. So read on for some tips to make it bearable. Christmas seems fuelled by alcohol, but drinking alcohol isn’t recommended at any point in your pregnancy, particularly not in the first trimester when the most important developmental changes are taking place. That doesn’t, however, mean you can’t enjoy a nice drink. Stock up with non-alcoholic drinks that you enjoy. We love the Seedlip spirits which feel like a good old-fashioned tipple but are in fact tee-total. Make sure you’re mixing your drinks with plenty of water and that you’re near a loo to relieve your poor squashed bladder. Endless standing up at drinks parties is hell for your already-swollen legs. Be discerning – accept that this year you’ll go to fewer parties and those you do go to will probably end earlier for you. And while that can seem boring, remember it’s not forever and you’ll soon have a little baby in your arms that’ll make it all worth it. Make sure you wear suitable shoes – if you have to wear heels, take advantage of the current block-heel trend rather than a

a nice big healthy bump as a result. If you’re staying with noisy relatives, don’t forget to pack the ear plugs! If you’re hosting Christmas or dealing with other children, delegate responsibility. When you’re pregnant you should be doing as little as possible, so rope in the relatives and give them jobs to do. It’s sometimes hard for alpha women to accept help, but it’s the only way to go. Because your emotions are high and your tolerance low, this might not be the best Christmas you ever have, but remember it doesn’t need to be. You have plenty of Christmases ahead of you, so try to provide yourself with the rest and relaxation that your body’s craving and instead look forward to the exciting year ahead. It’s rarely the perfect time to be pregnant, but when that baby arrives, it’s always perfect.

wobbly stiletto, and seek out a corner to sit down and catch up with friends rather than standing the whole night. Negotiating the shops at Christmas is more challenging than ever – so take advantage of the fact that in the 21st century we no longer have to go to shops to buy things. Make a comprehensive list of those you need to buy for and in good time settle down on a sofa and do your shopping online with your feet up. The most indulgent thing a pregnant woman can do during the holiday period is not eat, drink or be given presents – it’s all about sleep. Most of us manage to get a bit of time off, so use this to have lie ins, early nights and daytime siestas. Acknowledge the tremendous work your body’s doing and give it the energy to do this. You’ll emerge happier, more resilient and with

TABLE TALK
THE STOKKE RESEARCH SURVEYED 2,006 PARENTS OF CHILDREN AGED 14 OR YOUNGER
W
e may be counting down to one of the biggest family dinners of the year, but recent findings from Scandinavian nursery brand, Stokke, has revealed some rather discouraging dinnertime discoveries. The survey found that one in four British families eat dinner in front of the TV every day, with just 51 per cent typically enjoying a family meal at the dinner table, and one in 10 admit to letting kids eat alone in their rooms. While 86 per cent of parents believe it’s important to eat dinner as a family, just two in five say they eat together every night. The survey of 2,000 parents of children under 14 also found that more than two-thirds of British parents confess to using a phone or a tablet to keep a child quiet at the dinner table. A whopping three-quarters of parents say they keep their phones on the table at all times during dinner. Even worse, 67 per cent of parents admit to spending too much time on their phones instead of focusing on their child. Charlotte Stirling-Reed is a specialist in baby and children nutrition for Stokke, she says: “The idea of eating together as a family for every meal will probably seem unrealistic for most. However, whenever we can, it’s worthwhile making the most of time together eating, as infants and toddlers pick up so much about what to eat and how to eat from watching others around them at mealtimes.” With the aim of encouraging families to sit together, designer, Peter Opsvik created the hugely popular Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair that grows with your child. The brand’s ethos is to nurture family bonding, bring your baby closer to the table and enhance eye contact. TA H I N I & C H O C O L AT E B ROWN I E TR E E S Preparation: 15 minutes Cooking: 30 minutes Suitable for freezing Suitable from 12 months Makes about 6 trees
Using less sugar than traditional brownies, the tahini in this recipe allows for the fudgy texture, without adding lots of sugar. INGREDIENTS
• 150g dark chocolate, roughly chopped • 150g unsalted butter • 3 large eggs • 75g caster sugar • 100g tahini • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 100g plain flour • ¼ tsp baking powder • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon • A good pinch of ground cloves FOR THE DECORATION
• 20g tahini • 100g dark chocolate, melted • Sesame seeds, optional These tahini brownies may have less sugar in them, but they are still rich and gooey
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4 and line the base and sides of a square 20cm dish or circular springform tin. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water, or gently melt in the microwave (at a low setting); stir until smooth. Remove from the heat, and allow to cool. In a food processor or large bowl and using a wooden spoon, beat the eggs, caster sugar, tahini and vanilla extract until light in colour. Beat for a good 2-3 minutes. In a separate bowl sift the flour, baking powder and spices. Pour the cooled chocolate mixture into the beaten eggs and mix until combined and smooth, then fold in the flour mix until just combined and there is no flour visible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin. Transfer to the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes until set on top but still a little gooey inside. Leave to cool completely in the tin before unmoulding. Cut the cooled brownie cake into six triangular tree-shaped wedges – you can slice off the rounded bottoms to give a straight edge, if you like. To decorate, drizzle over tahini and melted chocolate; sprinkle with sesame seeds, if using.

This creamy parsnip purée is delicious for baby, then add a dollop of cream and serve any leftovers with your roast! You need to add the potato to give a creamier purée. INGREDIENTS
• 50g unsalted butter • 1 onion, finely sliced • 1 bay leaf • 2 cloves • 1 clove garlic • 200ml whole milk, plus a large extra splash • 100g white potato, peeled and cut into even chunks • 200g parsnips, cut into even chunks FOR THE EGGY BREADSTICKS
• 1 egg • 20g Parmesan, grated • A splash of milk • 1 slice of bread
• 1 tbsp olive oil METHOD
To make the purée, melt the butter in a large saucepan and add the onion. Cook over a medium heat for around 10 minutes, stirring often until the onion has softened but not coloured. Add the bay leaf and cloves (count them going in and count them coming out) with the milk. Bring to a very gentle simmer, then add the parsnips and potatoes. Cook, covered, over a medium heat for 25 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Take off the heat and remove the bay leaf and cloves. Mash the purée, then finish off with a whizz with the stick blender to give you a smooth purée. Taste and season, if for adults. To make the eggy bread. Whisk the egg, Parmesan and milk together in a bowl. Cut the bread into finger-sized pieces and dunk in the egg mixture. Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pan and, once heated, place the eggy fingers into the pan. Cook on both sides for a few minutes until golden brown. Set aside on kitchen paper. Serve with the parsnip purée.

• 200g porridge oats • 75g sesame seeds • 50g almonds • 50g puffed rice • 74g dried cranberries or apricots • 1 tsp cinnamon • 150g coconut oil or butter, melted in the microwave • 10 dates • 1 tbsp maple syrup • 3 tbsp apple or orange juice • 75g dark chocolate, chopped, optional METHOD
In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, spread the oats, sesame seeds and almonds and dry toast them for a few minutes until starting to turn golden. Set aside to cool. Line a 26cm square tin with baking parchment, leaving some overhanging on either side. Tip the cooled oats and seeds into a processor
and pulse until broken up. In a large bowl, tip the pulsed oat mix along with the puffed rice cereal, dried fruit, and cinnamon. Mix everything together. Place the coconut oil or butter, dates, maple syrup and juice, and heat gently for a few minutes until the oil or butter has melted and the dates have softened. Remove from the heat and mash the dates with a fork, then pour over the oat mixture, stir until everything is well combined. Allow to cool for a few minutes, then stir through the chopped chocolate, if using. Tip the mixture into the prepared tin, spread it out into an even layer, then pack it down very firmly; use the base of a glass to help you to press it down. Place the tin in the fridge to chill for about an hour until completely cold. Use the overhanging parchment to lift the slab out of the tin, then cut it into 12 slices using a very sharp serrated knife. Wrap each bar individually in baking paper and store in the fridge for a couple of weeks.

NEWS
WHEREVER YOUR DESTINATION, TR AVEL IN ST YLE WITH BABY IN TOW
Editor REBECCA MOORE heads to the west country for a restorative break
I
always think this time of year gives us some space to appreciate what our own country has to offer and as editor of a baby magazine it had been quite some time since I visited an adults-only hotel, so the timing couldn’t be more on point to visit The Scarlet. In the depths of rugged north Cornwall, yet just five minutes from Newquay Airport, perched atop Mawgan Porth beach sits the luxury ecohotel nestled into the rocks. The Scarlet has scooped awards galore, with many giving credit for its dedication to sustainability. Its claiming to do things ‘a little differently’ is evident as soon as you check-in, where you’re told to sit, admire the views, and enjoy a complimentary hot drink. There are just 37 bedrooms arranged over five levels, so the hotel never feels hectic, complemented by interior design which brings the outside in: think vast floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the bay at every turn and tranquil bedrooms complete with freestanding oval baths. The real relaxation is to be had at the spa though. I reached new rejuvenating heights floating in one of the two log-fired hot tubs perched on the clifftop. We were lucky enough to catch a Cornish sunset, witnessing the glowing orb drop into the water before drying off in the cedar-barrel sauna. Visiting in October meant I wasn’t brave enough to dip in the natural reedfiltered swimming pool, but it made a fabulous backdrop to cosying up in the relaxation room. As you’d expect from its coastal location, the menu offers plenty of fresh, locally-caught fish, alongside modern dishes to delight meat eaters and vegetarians alike. And you certainly won’t find a better place to burn off any indulgences than a saunter along the beach and cliffs. Mawgan Porth’s golden sands, beautifully soft to the touch, are easily accessible from the hotel. The Scarlet is a truly special place, perfect for babymooners, parents yearning some well-earned rest and everyone in between.

POSTCARD FROM
ITALY
Sam and Sophie tried out all snow activities
Rebecca Moore HE ADS TO THE ITALIAN ALPS FOR THE MAGICAL MOUNTAINS s someone who feels they’ll forever be in the ‘beginner’ ranks for skiing, inviting my niece and nephew to join me on the slopes was brave. But having only started my skiing career at 16, I was keen for the kids to have an earlier introduction. Plus, it was the perfect excuse to see my youngest niece, eight-month-old Poppy, wrapped up in a snowsuit. Between the six of us we’d ticked France, Switzerland and Canada off the list, so we headed for the lesser-known Italian Alps via a two-hour flight to nearby Innsbruck, just across the Austrian border. We were staying at Sonnwies in South Tyrol. Inclusive of baby care, a kids’ programme plus swimming pools galore, we knew fun was guaranteed even off the slopes. Founded by the Hinteregger family in 1999, it has grown from a small guesthouse to a luxury family paradise. When we arrived, we were shown to the dining area – although late for lunch, they insisted we filled our bellies before our first afternoon on the slopes. Families are definitely well looked after here, from plentiful highchairs to the kid-friendly cutlery, plus tasty fare to delight a range of ages and palates. It’s the same with the accommodation. We were staying in a Spa Suite, complete with a sauna and hot tub. Sleeping six, there were two plush bathrooms and a robe in every size, with a cot and changing mat kindly set up. Our ski hire had been thoughtfully organised for us, too, and was waiting in

the locker room. It’s just a three-minute walk to the hotel’s own 800m-long ski run equipped with button lift and ski school, plus magic carpet. Sam and Sophie had been enrolled for three sessions. Both active kids, I was confident they’d pick it up, especially with some solid tuition. And Thomas offered just that; super-friendly, with perfect English, and made skiing look second nature. By their second session, they were onto the ski lift, and by day three, carving, jumping and skidding past me! In the afternoons, we’d ski down the run together like three musketeers, a memory to be cherished. Poppy didn’t get to enjoy much slope action, but off the mountains, she couldn’t have been more spoilt. One afternoon, we made use of the complimentary baby care and checked her into the Baby Hotel, for babies from four months. Apparently, the perfect day guest, Poppy came back smiling. She was also a big fan, as we all were, of the extra-warm baby pool. Heated at 33°C, it’s the perfect temperature for a little splash about, plus its equipped with its own waterproof cinema-sized screen. Sam and Sophie loved whizzing down the slides and racing each other on the rapids. The outdoor pool is stunning, and looking out to the snowy scenes beyond felt like a real luxury. Prices from €380 per night based on two adults and two children sharing on an all-inclusive basis. sonnwies.com
Thanks to excellent baby care, Poppy’s parents got to ski, too

The various accommodation options at Château Les Carrasses range from stunning one-bedroom suites to spacious houses, complete with private pools, which sleep up to eight – perfect for large families travelling together. Each of the individually designed residences combine a calming contemporary colour palette and traditional French country flair for a boutique feel, and the modern comforts have not been overlooked, with everything from barbecues and fully-equipped kitchens to roll-top tubs and sun loungers. Children and parents alike will have the time of their lives at this beautiful, spoiling Château.
N
Days can be spent soaking up the sunny Mediterranean climate by the pool before working up a sweat on the tennis, pétanque or volleyball courts. Bikes are available to borrow for scenic rides through the vines or along the Canal du Midi, while the sandy beaches of Gruissan and Sérignan Plage are not to be missed. The concierge team is on hand to ensure guests get the most out of their stay and can help organise horse riding, kayaking and rock climbing, too. Searching for Santa LOOKING AHE AD TO CHRISTMAS, Mar tha Alexander FINDS THE BEST SPOTS TO SEE THE MAN IN RED
Little ones will love ice-skaing with their very own penguin helper at Lapland UK
e gets about a bit, old Father Christmas, so chances are your little one will be able to visit him no matter where you live. However, we think there are some extra-special settings for meeting the big man. A good meeting with Santa should involve a beautiful or exciting backdrop, chit-chat with his elves, some festive grub, a bit of one-on-one time to discuss any stocking filler requirements and, of course, a present to open for the time being! Here, we think we’ve found the very best places to see Santa – in the UK and beyond.
H
LAPLAND UK, Berkshire
Santa has an outpost in the Home Counties and he’ll be here in the run-up to Christmas. As you’d expect, LaplandUK is a hive of industry – and visitors will need to pull their weight before they meet the big man. This is an immersive experience, beloved by the likes of David Beckham and Emma Bunton, lasting four hours, during which the traditional Father Christmas story is retold with help from elves, animals and other friendly sprites. Once you’ve passed through the Magical Door into the Enchanted Forest, a world of activities opens up from toy making to gingerbread baking. Sweet shopping and ice skating are also on the agenda before the final stop, Father Christmas’ House. From Saturday 16 November to Tuesday 24 December. From £59. laplanduk.co.uk
baby-magazine.co.uk | 91
EDEN PROJECT, Cornwall
As far as beautiful settings go, you couldn’t ask for more than the Eden Project. It’s little wonder Father Christmas decamps here in the lead-up to the 25 December. However, he is a busy man and, as such, needs even more help than his elves can deliver. From sorting letters to prepping his sleigh, visiting children will be expected to muck in to make sure everything runs smoothly. All elbow grease is rewarded with a storytelling session before each child shares a chinwag with Santa himself. And if children aren’t too exhausted, there’s even an ice rink to burn off any excess energy. Various dates in November and December. From £13.50 for a child aged five to 16 (four and under go free). edenproject.com
DISNEY’S ENCHANTED CHRISTMAS at
POLAR EXPRESS TRAIN RIDE from
While having selfies with Santa is the raison d’etre here, there is plenty more to do. Festive parades, songs beneath a majestic tree and waltzes at the Christmas Ball – all this makes for a bumper package for those who can’t get enough of this time of the year. One of the highlights is watching the 24-metre-tall tree being lit by Minnie, Mickey and Santa Claus. Meanwhile, Disney’s Christmas Parade will be performed twice a day with a gaggle of favourite characters leading the charge. Santa will be at the end of the parade – waving to crowds from his sleigh. He will also greet visitors in a special festive lodge, accept letters from children and hear their Christmas wishes. Various dates in November and December. Prices vary. disneyholidays.co.uk
Snaking through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park comes the Polar Express, a festive locomotive which promises picturesque views, cookies to munch and, best of all, a visit from Santa – who will be toting his sack that contains presents for all of the children on board. All passengers, who are encouraged to wear their PJs, will board the train – powered by a steam engine – at Leeming, having had some refreshments in the waiting room. You can book private compartments in the old-fashioned carriages and enjoy the view before the train pulls into The North Pole (Bedale) – where Santa is waiting on the platform, ready to jump on board and begin his rounds. The train will make its way back through the Dales to Leeming, where everyone will alight into plenty of falling ‘snow’ and be welcomed into Santa’s workshop. From Friday 29 November to Monday 23 December. Tickets from £25. yorkshiredalesthepolarexpressride.com

FINNISH LAPLAND
Where better to meet Santa than on his home turf? That said, Finnish Lapland is unlikely to have much turf, given that over the winter months the area is covered in snow. When it comes to tavel packages to Finland, we think Santa’s Lapland is the best. It boasts two packages – Santa’s Magic and Santa’s Aurora – both offering three and four days in this winter wonderland. The Aurora is more expensive as it includes a Wilderness Dinner and visitors get to see the Aurora Borealis – a natural display of multicoloured light. Aside from meeting Santa, you’ll all have the chance to pet reindeer and ride on sleighs pulled by huskies. From Friday 29 November to Tuesday 24 December. Packages start at £966. santaslapland.com

BUSINESS
Maria’s aim was to bring stylish and sustainable Portuguese childrenswear to the UK
Tell us a bit about the brand. Beatrice & Bee is a childrenswear brand responsibly made in Portugal. After my daughters were born, I realised that all their clothes were bought in Portugal or in some Spanish independent boutiques in London. As I couldn’t find any Portuguese boutiques with the traditional designs that I love, in 2017 I decided to create Beatrice & Bee. I travelled to northern Portugal, which is well known for its rich textile history, to find ateliers that could produce my designs with attention to detail and the guarantee of quality, always bearing in mind responsible practices. I wanted to create a business that I could be proud of across borders. What are the brand’s values? First of all, Beatrice & Bee is a sustainable brand; I always try to use materials such as 100 per cent organic cotton and recycled fabrics that in other big industries would be wasted. Sustainability is also about making quality clothes that can be worn again by siblings, cousins or friends, and will last from generation to generation. I also try to produce my clothes
98 | baby-magazine.co.uk
INSPIRE MARIA ARAÚJO
The founder of childrenswear label Beatrice & Bee talks fashion, everyday inspiration and sustainability in small quantities so that each garment is special. On top of that, I always put my passion into my collections. I believe that if I make an item with love the children will feel that in some way. Describe a typical day for you. My days start very early getting my daughters ready for school, Leonor is five years old and Ines is three. After the drop-offs, my working day begins with a cup of coffee. Time flies until 3pm while I’m designing new lines, meeting with suppliers, updating the website, posting on social media or organising photoshoots and events like pop ups and Christmas fairs. The rest of the afternoon I’m a busy mum again, but often after putting the girls to bed I can be found back at my studio, even if it’s just to send an email.
How do you maintain a good work/life balance? It can be difficult to separate work from personal life, as children’s clothing and inspiration for my designs are everywhere, from when I pick my daughters up from school or take them to a birthday party or a museum, or when I’m trying to relax by watching a movie or reading a magazine. I love my job but family always comes first, so on weekends I try to be with them as much as I can by doing

simple things, like going to the park and taking them out for pizza or ice cream. What’s been your proudest business moment? Every time I receive a message or a picture from a happy mum sharing how much she loves my clothes on her child. That makes my day! I was also proud to be nominated for the Baby Awards 2019 in the Best Baby Fashion Brand category. What’s next for Beatrice & Bee? After many requests from our clients, our next collection will extend its size range to fit kids up to 10 year olds. The feedback from many mums was that they were sad when their children had to stop wearing the designs once they’d turned six. I created the brand for the British market initially, but 50 per cent of our sales come from countries such as USA, France and Australia. So the next step is to invest in other international markets, which is very exciting! beatriceandbee.com
