That classic boating is an event-driven sport seems obvious. And it’s all about impact. The impact or effect of many boats together. We can all miss one lovely old boat in a trot of white-by-the-yard plastic. Indeed on her own she can seem rather forlorn; as if elegant sheer and raked overhangs should look incongruous, even uncomfortable, among bulb-hulled boats with double aft cabins. Bring her two sisters alongside, or moored in a row and suddenly there’s the gleeful feeling you might enjoy at an antiques fair. Your eye will be taking in the lines, sheer, bow and counter while your mind will find delight at the proportions of her coachroof or the arrangement of her varnished gull’s-wing hatches. Add another ten boats, some of which can even be built in the spirit of tradition, and you start to have something that feels like butter melting into hot toast. It literally is as if your senses are getting saturated by the sheer appeal of so many good-looking boats. Maybe it’s because none of them looks the same – they may be from across several eras, like turn-of-the-century plumb-bowed gaffers mixing it with trim gentleman’s cruiser-racers from the 1930s. And so it’s pleasant to start doing a bit of compare and contrast: which type do you like? After all, the big yacht may offer long-range comfort, YACHTS but she may need more crew. A pocket cruiser, meanwhile, can take you to places that CHELSEA MARINE properly define the meaning of getting away from it all. “Materials beckon The noble materials – bronze, teak, varnished about the adventure hardwoods, galvanised steel, sober coils of buff of being aboard” cordage – all also have an appeal within the architecture of the cascading carpentry, whose angles YACHTS and dimensions, delimited by the nature of the timber, seem to beckon about the CHELSEA adventure of being aboard; being bound for new places, and just getting away. MARINE And so this is what we would call a classic boat or a trad boat event. There don’t have to be hundreds of boats to create the aesthetic effect – but a few together will seem to have an impact that is greater than the sum of their parts. Events are great for owners and restorers of old boats as well. They provide a deadline and an incentive to have the vessel looking at her smart-best. And in the spring months I know readers, like myself, are wondering which events they might be able to attend, this year. Of course you don’t need to have a boat... you can just turn up, get chatting, offer to help and you could be away; it’s still your own adventure. We have events listed in this issue – from page 52. So, looks like time to make a plan. YACHTING
