CYGNET BAY, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Perched on the rugged tip of the Dampier Peninsula, 200km north of Broome, lies Cygnet Bay, with azure waters that are home to some of the most dramatic tidal movements on the planet. Here, you can see the aweinspiring Giant Tides; a natural phenomenon that creates whirlpools and cascading water formations, and even a waterfall in the middle of the ocean.

This is also a place of deep cultural significance. The waterfall-reef experience celebrates the Bardi Jawi people, the traditional owners of the land and sea surrounding Cygnet Bay, whose rich traditions, knowledge of the land, and ancient pearling practices will add an invaluable dimension to your visit.

The area is also home to the Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, a business which has been run by the Brown family for more than 75 years. Australian pearls from this area are a natural treasure that weave together indigenous heritage and the untamed beauty of nature.

WORDS BETH POPPY ERSKINE

You can visit Cygnet Bay on APT’s Broome Cultural and Coastal Highlights cruise, departing 8 October 2025. Other cruise lines visiting the region include Kimberley Pearl Charters.

HISTORIC CANALS, AMSTERDAM

This year Amsterdam proudly celebrates its 750th anniversary, honouring the rich history, cultural wealth, and modern spirit that defines the city. A range of special events will showcase its iconic landmarks, renowned museums, and vibrant neighbourhoods. Visitors can also enjoy art exhibitions, workshops, festivals, and culinary experiences that reflect Amsterdam’s diverse heritage.

Key dates include Koningsdag (King’s Day) on 27 April, a citywide festival filled with music and festivities. On 21 June, the Festival on the Ring A10 will see the city’s busiest motorway become a car-free, 15-kilometre party for the longest day of the year. Another highlight is the Windows’ Festival on 27 October, when residents in the east of Amsterdam will decorate their windows like birthday cards in a creative community tribute.

One of the city’s most enchanting features is its historic canal network. Lined with charming 17th century townhouses, these waterways offer a glimpse into Amsterdam’s Golden Age, creating a picturesque backdrop for leisurely walks and scenic boat tours. As part of the anniversary, special boat tours will run through the canals near Amsterdam Central Station. If you’ve been meaning to visit this vibrant capital, this year promises to be a truly special time to go.

You can visit Amsterdam on AmaWaterways’ Best of Holland & Belgium cruise departing on 13 September 2025. Other cruise lines that visit Amsterdam include Uniworld, Riviera Travel, Viking, Saga and Avalon Waterways.
