hen I was 18 I flew to Melbourne for part of my gap year. Mad about sailing, I spent my first weekend walking along the beach to see what I could find in the way of sailing clubs. I came across a posh place called Sandringham Yacht Club and was soon welcomed by some friendly club members. I asked if anyone needed crew and within five minutes had been introduced to Gary Sheard, who only two years earlier had represented Australia at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in the Soling keelboat. The following weekend I was crewing for this Olympian in his Soling, doing the middleman job and discovering I was nowhere near strong enough for it, but loving every moment.

You and I are incredibly fortunate to have found our ‘tribe’; the extraordinary cult of sailing… My experience of walking into a yacht club on the other side of the world and immediately being welcomed as one of

their own tribe happens to someone every weekend of the year, in almost every corner of the world. Once we meet someone who gets where we’re coming from, who talks the same language of sailing we do, it’s easy to form an immediate bond with them.

A sense of belonging To that extent, every sailor in the world is part of our tribe. But tribal beings that humans are, we like to be part of a smaller tribe within the tribe. If you had to define your tightest tribe, who or what would it be? Some of us occasionally move from one class to another, but always stay loyal, lifelong members to the same club.

Others are faithful to their preferred class, particularly development classes such as the Cherub, Merlin Rocket, National 12, International 14 and the International Moth.

To devote yourself to racing a complex boat that's always developing demands a particularly high level of commitment.

However, even some of the one-designs can create a sense of tribe. The Fireballs and 505s, for example, attract a strong following

of sailors who enjoy coming together year after year to race and socialise with each other. It seems to have been easier for the ‘open’ one-designs to maintain a sense of tribe than the single manufacturer one-designs. Maybe the input of multiple boat builders, mast makers and sailmakers helps maintain the buzz within a class.

EVERY SAILOR IN THE WORLD IS PART OF A TRIBE

Evolution versus revolution

Buoyed by the early successes of the ISO and the Laser 5000, Topper and Laser launched new boat after new boat.

However, sadly very few of those new classes survived beyond a few years.

At the time, manufacturers were more focused on launching the next new boat than looking at ways of maintaining the health of a class once the afterglow of the initial launch and the hype had subsided.

The Laser 5000 and Laser 4000 were both boats that enjoyed great numbers in their heyday, yet neither has much happening today. What they seemed to lack was the strength of a class association to see it through the leaner times.

Welcome newcomers to your tribe. Sounds obvious, but it doesn’t always happen..

Look after the middle to the back of your racing fleet. Give them the best prizes and the biggest cheers - the front of the fleet will look after itself.

If someone leaves the tribe, ask them why. It might help you understand more about keeping your tribe members engaged in the club or class for longer.

Run a ‘buddy’ system. It’s a great way of passing knowledge from the more accomplished sailor along to the newer, less experienced ones.

Set up a WhatsApp group to share ideas and motivate each other.

If there’s a common gripe or complaint, address it accordingly.

Select your class championship venues because they are attractive, exciting places to go and race, not because you feel the class ‘owes’ a visit to a venue.

In the 1990s we witnessed an asymmetric revolution of newer, faster boats following in the footsteps of the International 14 which had recently gone twin trapeze and asymmetric and was attracting entries to major championships in excess of 100 boats.

Then in 1993, along came the Topper ISO and the Laser 5000, followed by a deluge of new boats. RS launched with the ambitious and challenging single-hander, the RS600 and the RS400, an off-the-shelf highperformance double-handed hiking dinghy which provided a more exciting alternative to the likes of the GP14 and Enterprise, and a more affordable option compared with the ever-developing Merlin Rocket.

RS quickly noticed that people were prepared to pay a bit more for a superior product. Ok, so the RS400 has an aluminium mast, but the other launch product, the RS600, came with a rotating, ultra lightweight carbon mast that still looks bang up to date 20 years later.

The 49er and the RS800 soon made the Laser 5000 look heavy and dated, and much as sailors – including me – loved the 5000, it just wasn’t able to withstand the relentless march of progress into carbon fibre. So there’s evidence that sometimes classes must move with the times – even the strict one-designs.

Otherwise there's a risk that the tribe will fall apart.

However, it isn’t always about the boat, and what RS Sailing has done better than perhaps any other boat builder is recognise that sailors want an end-to-end experience. While traditional boat builders have tended to consider their work done

as soon as the boat leaves the yard, RS has created a whole ecosystem in which their boats and classes can thrive.

The RS Association is professionally run and ensures that each of its classes has a programme of training along with a strong racing and social calendar.

The ultimate manifestation of the RS tribe was at last summer's RS Games in Weymouth and Portland, where the quality of the racing in Weymouth Bay was more than matched by a massive onshore and social programme that attracted 1,300 competitors racing in 15 different fleet championships across 20 days of sailing.

The most successful boat launch of recent times for RS has been the singlehanded RS Aero which is starting to look like a serious single-handed rival to the dominance of the Laser. One of the distinguishing factors of the Aero has been the driving force of Pete Barton almost acting as figurehead for the class.

Not only is he a very good sailor, but more importantly, Barton has maintained the impetus of the class in the UK and internationally too.

To this effect, classes that have received the support of Rooster's Steve Cockerill, have tended to thrive too, showing that the enthusiasm of passionate and committed individuals can make a massive difference to the health of a tribe.

While Barton and Cockerill are both very accomplished sailors, bestowing them with an added authority, it is not a prerequisite.

Enthusiasm of a few dedicated individuals, no matter their skill level, can drive growth in a fleet. One of the reasons the youth classes are so strong is the tireless input of parents into the fleet. The senior classes may not have the benefit of parents to do all the hard yards on our behalf, so maybe that means we will have to do it ourselves.

Strengthening your tribe Ultimately the strength of your tribe comes down to a couple of key factors: the quality and appeal of the boat, the quality and quantity of enthusiasm, and effort from your tribe members.

Providing you’ve got faith in your boat, and there are key people (maybe you're one of them!) putting in the effort to promote the class, your tribe will be in a great position to thrive.

TriBal trEndS MAke raCinG lEss seRioUs Sailing clubs that have introduced a ‘beginners’ race’ to their weekly calendar have frequently found that they attract bigger numbers to this fun racing than to the serious races on a Sunday morning.

PErsOnaL HAndIcaPpiNg Personal handicapping is another way to make racing more appealing to newcomers. This is what makes golf so successful as a global sport. Clubs that have tried personal handicapping find it attracts good numbers and provides everyone with something to aim for; the newbies in particular.

uNiqUe SelLinG pOint The International Moth has been one of the rip-roaring success stories of the past decade. For a boat that costs around £30,000 new, requires huge amounts of time to master the sailing skills and also the skills to repair and maintain it, the number of participants has been immense. Why? Because it has a unique selling point of incredible foiling performance. This is an example of a tribe that has sprung up because it provides a sailing and racing experience you can’t find anywhere else.

DOubLinG uP, triPliNg up, or moRe...

While the number of new classes exploded in the 1990s, the overall number of small boat sailors hasn’t increased. Individual classes have found it harder to justify their own stand-alone racing circuit, so have started to double or triple up with other small fleets, in order to bring sufficient numbers to interest a host sailing club.

Beyond that, sailors are moving increasingly towards multiclass handicap travellers circuits like the Seldén SailJuice Winter Series and the recently launched Great British Sailing Challenge.

PAy And plAy The most significant downward trend of the past 20 years has been the disappearance of sailors between the ages of 18 to 35 – the cash-poor, timepoor years of young adulthood. The biggest factor in helping to reverse that trend has been for sailing clubs to offer a ‘pay and play’ option similar to a typical gym membership. The RYA ran a webinar on this topic at the end of 2018.

We asked four class sailors about their tribe The Musto Skiff is a really hard boat to sail, which is why it’s an unwritten rule that if you learn something about how to handle it or race it more easily, you share your knowledge. One of the attractions of the Merlin Rocket to younger sailors is just how many great sailors we have in the fleet already. I can’t think of a more competitive national fleet right now.

Foiling is a relatively new, but fast growing dinghy tribe. Here’s our guide to getting started for anyone who is tempted to give it a try

F

or many dinghy sailors the concept of foiling can seem mysteriously unachievable. But this once-niche concept is spreading, with the suggestion that the sailing world is in the middle of its greatest ever evolution.

The thrill of flying above the water at exhilarating speeds is something many dinghy sailors are now keen to experience.

Fortunately, with the launch of the new RYA Foiling Course and the rise of foiling-specific dinghies, foiling is becoming much more accessible. Taking flight can now be enjoyed by anyone with intermediate sailing skills and the enthusiasm to try.

Here the RYA Chief Instructor, Amanda Van Santen, explains all you need to know to enjoy your first foiling flight...

How does foiling work?

Grasping the science behind foiling will help make your first flight easier. In simplistic terms, a foiling dinghy features a specially adapted rudder and daggerboard set that is designed to induce lift, just like a wing.

As the foil moves through the water, the water moving over the top flows more quickly than that underneath. This exerts a higher pressure below the foil and creates 14

give it a go RYA Foiling Courses are available at a growing number of RYA Recognised Training Centres around the UK, including Andrew Simpson Watersports Centres in Weymouth and Reading, Plas Menai, Southampton Watersports Activity Centre, Bray and Queen Mary Sailing Club.

an upward force. As boat speed increases, there comes a point when the lift equals the boat’s weight and the hull rises out of the water, reducing drag and radically increasing boat speed... Take off!

Choosing a dinghy As the popularity of foiling has grown, so too has the variety of foiling-specific dinghies.

Selection largely depends on previous sailing experience and ability; jumping straight in at the deep end will see you spending more time in the water than flying over the top of it!

The Glide Free foil-adapted RS Aero, Laser and O’Pen Bic have proved to be good starter boats, while the F101 multihull is designed to aid progression for first-timers as well as more confident foilers. The Skeeta and Waszp provide intermediate platforms, with the Moth suiting more confident sailors.

Who can foil?

The general guideline for foiling beginners

is that you are able to sail to RYA Level 2 standard; if you can happily blast around in a traditional dinghy, in various wind strengths, you are ready to try foiling.

This will give you a good range of essential sailing skills from which to start your foiling adventures and ensure you have the best possible chance of getting up on the foils in your First Flights training session.

Taking flight for the first time can still take a bit of practice, but with some expert instruction and guidance, you’ll be up on the foils in no time. RYA foiling instructors have been specially trained to teach the art of foiling, and, with a low number of students per instructor, you’ll have the best introduction possible.

Getting going To get started, you’ll need to set sail on a close reach. As the boat gradually lifts out of the water, the trick is to adjust your bodyweight and trim the sail to keep the boat balanced.

Boat set-up is also very important for foiling

success, and an RYA foiling instructor can guide you through the steps. It's advisable to choose the right weather conditions too, with a moderate breeze of at least six knots to get enough speed and a calm sea state for maximum flow.

Once you’ve taken flight and up on the foils, you’ll need to work the boat to stay there. Trimming the mainsail to maintain speed will keep the water flowing over the foils to create lift. Use your bodyweight to maintain a slight heel to windward and to prevent the boat pitching forwards – generally speaking, the boat should remain horizontal and level with the water.

Ride height (the distance between the hull and the water) is also important. If you ride too high, the foils may pop out of the water, ride too low and you’ll get turbulence from the water’s surface, making it harder to control. Depending on the boat, you’ll have various controls and set-up options to fine tune the angle of the foils, which in turn adjusts the amount of lift and ride height.

W

hether you’re aiming for a podium place in your local club race, or going for gold at the Olympic Games, good groundwork will set you in good stead for a successful result.

We all know the five P’s – ‘Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance’ – can help us on the race course, but how many of us actually put this into practice? If we are honest with ourselves, it’s likely that many of us could dedicate a bit more time to planning and preparation ahead of our next race.

Fitness, nutrition and self-coaching are some of the most important elements to consider ahead of a race.

Here we have asked some of sailing's top experts, some who work regularly with the British Sailing Team, to share some of their tips for success...

FitNesS As dinghies become physically more demanding, and the competition gets fiercer, it’s becoming ever more important to make sure you are on top of your fitness game. Alex Hopson, strength and conditioning coach for the British Sailing Team, shares some advice on how to create an effective sailing fitness plan…

At almost every level in the sport, sailors are working hard to make gains on the racecourse, and the margins between winning and losing are narrowing. This

means that the physical demands of dinghy racing have become greater and fitness has become a key factor of success. So, if you are willing to put the training effort in, the rewards really can set you apart from your fellow competitors.

Sailing is a complete body workout, so it is wise to take a holistic approach to your training, but take time to focus on key areas that benefit your specific type of sailing and any weaknesses that you want to improve on. Generally speaking though, strong legs and a solid core are crucial for most dinghy classes, as well as a powerful upper body.

NutRitIon

SAILING IS A COMPLETE BODY WORKOUT Your ability to work hard for long periods of time and recover quickly is also pivotal to your performance, so include some endurance work and get your heart pounding with some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) such as running intervals, fast lengths in the pool or a lung busting session on the bike. For strength, invest some time in resistance training and ask your local gym for guidance on correct form and technique to ensure you get the maximum benefit from your workouts.

When setting out your fitness plan, remember that you’ll need to allow at least four to six weeks of training for your body to start to reap the benefits. Even if you are full of enthusiasm, don’t be tempted to go all out in your first week. Start with some relatively easy sessions and build the intensity over time as your body adjusts.

When it comes to performance in sport, nutrition is key. In order to illustrate this, consider your body as if it were a racing car. You invest time and money in kitting out your car with high performance upgrades to make it perform better.

However, the impact of these modifications will be seriously limited if you put too little, or the wrong type of fuel into the engine; your body is not much different. You can invest time and energy into training to create improvements, but unless you put the right type and amount of fuel into your body, you simply won’t be able to benefit from them.

Getting a good balance of carbohydrates, good fats and proteins is essential to good

health and optimal performance. Each sailor’s needs are different, depending on what type and level of racing you are doing, so you’ll need to find the best mix for your own goals.

At the British Sailing Team, we operate on a ‘food-first’ basis, so supplements are only used as a last resort. We recommend that all our sailors eat at least seven portions of fresh fruit and veg a day, in particular, colourful variations such as reds, purples and greens, for the highest antioxidant content.

On race day itself your body will need the right fuel to power you through and maintain performance, as well as recover.

When working at a high intensity, your body will be using more carbohydrates as fuel, so you’ll need to replenish these during a long day of racing or over the course of a multi-day regatta. Similarly, after racing, your body will be turning over more protein to assist recovery, so you’ll need to top up these levels too. We also advise sailors to avoid foods high in saturated fats on competition day as they slow down the body’s ability to break down carbohydrate for energy, which can make you feel slow and sluggish.

SElf-coAchIng Whilst not all of us can hire top sailing coaches, a solid self-coaching plan can be extremely effective in helping you to make gains on the racecourse. Paul Brotherton, ex-470 Olympian and worldclass sailing coach, talks through the key aspects to think about when self-coaching and which tools can best assist you...

Whether you’re into your third year of racing or an Olympic cycle, self-coaching requires you to be acutely aware of the most critical things that happen during a race and to look for ways to improve in these areas.

Each race is divided up into multiple parts; this usually includes a lot of arm wrestling at the start, and then three or four critical moments when you use information to make

good or poor decisions, or you execute a skill or manoeuver well or badly. Focusing on these critical moments should become the backbone of your training schedule, and by learning how to improve your performance in these pivotal areas, you can expect to make significant gains in your next race.

In order to assess your performance and look for gains, you will need to get some sort of outside perspective, and technology can help you to do this. One option is to acquire a basic GPS tracker. This allows you to see your track from a previous race and look at the angles that you sailed in relation to the different legs. You can retrospectively use this data to assess how long you were going in the right or wrong direction and look for ways to improve your course and tactical decisions for next time.

Another useful tool is a video camera, either mounted onboard or filmed by a friend off the boat. Seeing a video of yourself

This is particularly useful for closed skill work – anything that involves a routine and has a defined start and finish that can be perfected through practice and repetition, such as tacking or gybing.

My fitness plan varies depending on the time of the year and my regatta schedule.

In general I do a lot of high volume work during the off season and high intensity, low volume work as I get closer to key regattas.

Sailing requires all-round conditioning and good weight manipulation, so I do a huge variety of training from cycling and paddleboarding to weights and core.

My diet plan before and after racing isn’t too dissimilar from my everyday routine as I’m always training. It starts off with a good

breakfast of oats, eggs and avocado. I will have a light lunch before racing, and homemade bars and gels on the water if it’s windy. After sailing I'll have two more balanced meals before bed and I try to drink at least three litres of water a

day, depending on the climate. The importance of a good diet and correct fuelling cannot be underestimated; a poorly trained athlete who eats well will often outperform a well-trained one that isn’t fuelled correctly.

SteMmiNg The tiDe Protecting the environment from plastic waste

W

hen Environment Secretary Michael Gove called on sports leaders from across the Commonwealth to join in the fight against plastic pollution in the world’s oceans earlier in the year, it was a clear message to the sporting community to clean up its act.

Global change With mass sporting events often generating up to 750,000 plastic bottles and seven tonnes of waste, the Environment Secretary and representatives from Premier League football, swimming and ocean sailing got together to take a look at how the sector can use its influence to tackle this blight and bring about global change.

This will build on the work already underway across the sports industry, with this year’s Commonwealth Games banning the use of plastic balloons and rolling out water refills, and Twickenham Stadium introducing a deposit scheme for cups returned to the bar.

Gove said: “Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges

of our time and we all have a role to play to tackle the threats our oceans face.

“There are few groups which have the global reach and power the sports sector has to inspire change and mobilise action.

The industry is already making great strides, and I look forward to seeing how they can build on this progress to be true ambassadors for global change.”

The Government also announced a £61.4 million package of funding to boost global research and help countries across the Commonwealth prevent plastic waste entering the oceans in the first place.

Forward thinking The Green Blue, the innovative joint environmental initiative established by the RYA and British Marine more than a decade ago, encourages recreational boaters to minimise waste, including single-use plastic. By raising awareness, this ongoing campaign has helped boat users, member

businesses, sailing clubs and training centres reduce their impact on coastal and inland waters to help keep them in great shape for now and into the future.

RYA Racing Manager Ian Walker said: “We strive to adopt the RYA’s recycling approach which seeks to minimise waste, reuse/recycle where possible and reduce energy consumption.

Our policy on single-use plastics is to greatly reduce our use of them and where feasible to eliminate their use entirely. Our athletes and support staff use refillable water bottles and bring reusable lunch boxes to events. We make sure that all athletes, support staff and contractors minimise waste and reuse/ recycle plastic where possible.”

Education not legislation Focusing on educational programmes, the RYA strives to maintain freedom of access and rights of navigation for recreational boaters in the UK’s marine protected areas, as well as between water RYA DINGHY SHOW 2019

bodies. By working towards an environmentally selfregulating boating community, The Green Blue campaign aims to help boaters minimise the impact they have on the environment and safeguard the waters and habitats we all enjoy and rely upon.

RYA Green Blue Campaign Manager Kate Fortnam explains: “Recreational boaters are passionate about the environment they live, work and spend most of their leisure time in. We’re keen to show and build upon the positive steps clubs, centres, marinas and other businesses and organisations are already taking to minimise any impacts they may have on their marine environment – and to help them to further develop this to work towards making boating even more sustainable. Awareness of environmental issues has undoubtedly increased in recent years. But there is more work to be done to protect the future sustainability of our marine ecosystems.”

Reducing waste Boaters see first-hand the amount of waste washed up on shore or at sea. There is also an overwhelming amount of marine plastic debris that is beyond visual, made up of a microscopic range fragmented plastic debris that cannot be just scooped out of the ocean. A key focus of the RYA’s work is to help them find ways to reduce plastic waste.

RYA Magazine, which regularly carries articles and features on recycling plastics, recently set an example to its members by switching its plastic wrapper to a plasticfree packaging. The RYA has also ordered the first of its fully biodegradable and ecofriendly membership cards, which are 80 per cent chalk based.

What can clubs do to help?

Many boating venues are already striving to ensure they have the facilities in place to enable their members to be more environmentally sustainable.

Simple measures can make a huge difference. Providing recycling bins, avoiding single use plastics, ensuring there is a spill kit available to clean up accidental oil or fuel spills, providing and encouraging the use

of antifoul ground sheets to capture paint drips and scrapings to dispose of in hazardous waste bins, and planning race courses that are away from more environmentally sensitive areas are all easily achievable. Setting up a wash-down area where boats, trailers and equipment can be washed will help stop the spread of harmful invasive plant and animal species.

RYA recognised training centres aim to reach leisure and professional customers by teaching them about environmental best practice on their courses.

Instructors can download free swatch cards containing interactive shorebased and on water activities to use in their lessons. RYA instructors may also apply for free Environmental Awareness Training, which has been particularly successful with dinghy and windsurfing instructors.

around the UK feature an amazing array of creatures. MPAs exist around much of the UK coastline, so it’s important that the recreational boating sector seeks to have a better understanding of the species and habitats protected in the areas in which we undertake our boating activities.

Through knowledge of wildlife behaviour and the areas where marine birds and mammal species breed, feed and rest, boaters will become more aware of how to minimise disturbance when out on the water. The Green Blue has some simple advice to help safeguard our marine wildlife. You can help by finding out more about the area you are boating in from the local harbour authority or Wildlife Trust: find out what species you might see and any local protocols to be aware of. Think about speed; always be steady, predictable, quiet and cautious around marine wildlife.

This applies whether you spot something in the distance or close by on the port side, and whether your passage takes you by seals hauled out on rocks or colonies of roosting birds on the cliffs.
