Solving a real problem The story of DogBuddy’s creation is an all-too-familiar tale to anyone who has ever owned a dog. The company was founded in 2013 by entrepreneur Richard Setterwall after he struggled to find a sitter for his own dog. Friends and family were unavailable, and he didn’t want to leave his dog in a kennel due to the stress it would cause. Realising that there are hundreds of willing dog sitters out there, Setterwall came up with a simple and efficient way of connecting dog owners and dog sitters.
Reviewed by other dog owners The service is easy to use and available online or as an app. Simply enter your postcode and the dates you need help, and you’ll be shown a list of available sitters in your area, along with their ratings and reviews from other dog owners. Read potential sitters’ profiles, along with seeing photos of their home, so you can ensure you are making the right choice for your pooch. DogBuddy also recommends a meet and greet before your booking to make sure everyone gets along. While your dog is with them, your sitter can send photos and track their walks, so you know your dog is having fun. Sitters have access to a special 24/7 vet line, so if they suspect your dog is feeling under the weather, they can get advice straightaway.

Where do you live in London?
We live in Wandsworth. For us, it’s the perfect mix of open space and urban life. We know all our neighbours and love that it feels like a mini village in a big city.

Where do you like to go with the children at weekends?
Our favourite family activity is to visit one of the markets; Broadway, Maltby Sreet, Columbia Road… there’s nothing nicer than a mooch around while filling up a basket with treats. It’s nice to get under the skin of a different part of London each time while also supporting independent producers. We also spend a lot of time in the parks. Our favourites are Richmond Park, Battersea Park and Regent’s Park. I try to meet up with friends so we get to chat while the children play together. And we love going to Kenwood House at Hampstead Heath, too, and will often meet my parents there. On the first and last Sunday of each month it holds family activities which are great fun, plus it has the most amazing views of London. Where do you shop for your twins?
I buy the children’s clothes from a whole host of places. I do love the more traditional look on children, so brands like La Coqueta, Olivier Baby & Kids and Little Circle are my go-tos as their pieces are all beautifully made. I also source quite a lot of vintage dresses for my daughter – either from charity shops or flea markets on holiday. On the high street I’m always picking up pieces from Zara, Mango, H&M, Next and La Redoute. And I just got my daughter the most brilliant leopard-print coat from Tu at Sainsbury’s. As a self-confessed interiors addict, how would you describe your own home style?
I always say it is much like my fashion style. I like to mix high street finds with vintage and designer, so the resulting look is hard to pin down. But it has warmth and texture, and feels homely! Where do you head for home buys?
Anywhere and everywhere! My favourite vintage market is Sunbury Antiques. It’s close to home and packed full of great treasures. It’s definitely the best way to spend a morning. I also love Retrouvius – some of the larger items in my home are from this brilliant salvage firm. Zara Home is great for tableware, glassware, linens and children’s room décor, and The Conran Shop consistently has the best visual merchandising around. I’m thrilled it has recently started to stock Edit 58. Plus, London’s museum shops are always great for postcards, coffee table books and little treasures. My husband berates me for always wanting to go in the shop before even looking at the exhibits! How do you manage the balance between your work and family?
Starting Edit 58 was very much about wanting to be more present for the children 29
and to have the flexibility to determine my schedule a little more than I would in a traditional workplace. At the start it was hard, the children weren’t yet at school, so I would snatch time when I could and worked late into the night. However, since they started school last year it has become much easier for me to balance the role of parenting and work. I drop them off and then have a solid six or seven hours most days to focus on work, before I go to collect them. Once I’m with them I don’t do any more work until they’re in bed. Having a brilliantly hands-on husband also helps, especially as we have no other childcare help. Do you ever manage to carve out time for date night?
We love nothing more than a dinner out. Getting dressed up and heading into town always feels special and exciting. We like to try out new places, but also have some firm favourites that we return to time and again. Since having children, going to the cinema also feels quite decadent! We make the most of it by heading to the Olympic or Electric cinemas, where we can enjoy the film on a sofa with a bottle of wine. We’re also quite partial to ‘date day’, as my husband can get out for a few hours at lunch sometimes. I’ll go and meet him in East London and we’ll have lunch – we love Lyle’s. That way we can be asleep on the sofa come evening and we don’t have to stump up for childcare either! What’s in store for Edit 58 in 2018?

her parents, John and Ana. The medical research they are doing is groundbreaking. And I’m inspired by any woman mothering more than one child. I don’t know how they do it! What parenting essentials have proven invaluable?

THERE ARE FEW THINGS AS FIERCE AS A MOTHER’S LOVE – AND FEW WOMEN AS FEARLESS AS CHARLIZE THERON. HERE, THE ACTRESS TELLS JAN JANSSEN JUST HOW SHE’S EMBRACING HER GREATEST ROLE TO DATE
I
n person, Charlize Theron is far more light-hearted than her film roles would suggest. She speaks with ease, and a relaxed sense of confidence, although there’s a hint in her eyes that says she’s ready to fire back if provoked. Today, she’s looking fabulous as ever, her career in high gear and “happier than I ever expected to be” as the mother of two adopted children: son Jackson, six, and daughter August, two. “I waited a long time to become a mother,” says the Mad Max actress. “It has exceeded all my expectations. It’s such a beautiful feeling to hold your children in your arms and be able to watch them grow and discover the world. “It’s changed my life completely,” she continues. “Before, when there were no children in my life, my work always came first. I also had the freedom to be able to take off and travel for three or four months at a time by myself. But even though I can’t do that anymore, I’m so incredibly happy to spend my time with my children. Every day that I wake up I’m thinking about what I’m going to do with them and how I’m going to make them happy.” Theron is still enjoying the critical and commercial success of her summer 2017 film, Atomic Blonde, which has given Charlize her own personal action film franchise as both star and producer. She spent five years developing the project, which she intended to be a vehicle allowing her to play a weaponised extension of her own rather formidable persona. A high-octane mixture of martial arts and espionage, the film showed that Theron is capable of any kick, punch or lethal blow her male counterparts might demonstrate on screen. 44

Now I realise there is something really powerful in being OK with being alone “I wanted to take the concept of a spy thriller and turn it on its head,” she explains. “I liked the physicality of the story.” Fighting the stereotypes that come with being a beautiful actress, Theron radically reinvented herself as a Hollywood star when she took on the role of real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster (2003). The former model gained 30lbs to play Wuornos and altered her appearance in such a way as to be almost unrecognisable in the role. It was a huge risk, but it paid off. Her performance was rewarded with a Best Actress Oscar and enabled her to escape the gilded studio cage that confined her to so-called ‘girlfriend’ or ‘sexy young thing’ roles. “I’m not simply an artist for hire,” she explains. “There is absolutely nothing mechanical in my choices and the way I interpret my roles. Do I take risks? Charlize’s Maybe I do. But it’s the only way to grow children, Jackson personally and professionally. I always try and August to choose characters that will reveal the most authentic parts of myself.” Theron credits her mother, Gerda – still her closest friend – for having inspired her to take a more fearless and adventurous approach to life. “She has taught me to stand up for myself and be courageous, and that’s exactly what I’m going to give my children,” she says. “I’m not someone who indulges in self-pity and I hate it 46
if I ever start feeling sorry for myself. I was raised in a way that I should never allow myself to be the victim, but to take responsibility for my decisions and live as boldly as possible. “My mother has given me a lot of guidance on that level. She’s someone who believes in not dwelling on the past and getting on with your life. I’m trying to live on those terms.” This is the kind of sensibility that Charlize hopes to impart to her two children. Adoption turned out to be the best path to parenthood for Theron following the collapse of her decadelong relationship with British actor Stuart Townsend in 2010. Their break-up hit Charlize hard, and revealed the deeply vulnerable side that her bold exterior tends to mask. She didn’t work for the next two years. “I’d been in serious relationships from the time I was 19, and suddenly I became single for the first time in my life. I had to make a conscious effort to rediscover myself and it was hard.” She admits she is someone who always found extreme comfort through relationships, but stops herself: “Now I realise there’s something really powerful in being OK with being alone, especially for women.” Charlize would eventually return to active screen duty with Young Adult, and surprised everyone, even some of her closest friends, when she adopted a four-month-old baby boy in 2012, whom she would name Jackson. After welcoming the toddler into her life, the actress was exultant: “I want to be that example for my son. I want him to grow up with a mom that he could see and look at her life with all the mistakes and with all the failures and all the flaws and say, ‘My mom lived an authentic life. That was the life she wanted to live.’” Three years later she would adopt August, now two, and Theron says she has found motherhood to be a generally joyous challenge. She grew up as an only child with a violent, alcoholic father whom her mother would eventually kill in selfdefence when Charlize was 15, after he had threatened them both with a shotgun in a drunken rage. (South African police never pressed charges against her mother). The incident plainly left psychological scars and in her late twenties, she went into therapy after years of denial. But this previously solid force has not only embraced the emotions of that traumatic event, and overcome them; she has now dedicated herself to becoming the most loving parent she can be. “I didn’t grow up with siblings, and had no idea of the beauty that siblings have with each other. It really is one of the most incredible things I’ve ever witnessed,” she says, “to see how much they love each other and to see how excited they are to see each other. It’s really beautiful.” Her children have also helped Charlize embrace that softer side that she has long tended to hide from plain sight. “Being a mother has struck me at a very deep level,” she admits. “My mother showed me by her own example that you need to take responsibility for your own happiness – and be tough, pick yourself up off the floor when times are hard and embrace life to the fullest. “Usually when Sally and I meet up or chat on one of our daily phone calls, that will trigger a bit of a creative explosion. We try to discuss new designs every two months or so, and will put together moodboards which might include current trends, films, prints and general French culture.”

How did Another Fox come to life?
“The inspiration came when I was pregnant and I struggled to find aspirational childrenswear that wasn’t expensive. I wanted to give parents the option to shop cool over cute without breaking the bank. By the end of my maternity leave, I decided to quit my nineto-five buying job and focus on Another Fox.” Where do you get inspiration?
“I research key trends for the season and use that as a starting point – WGSN, Instagram, and street trends. It’s also really important to me that the colour and fit of each piece caters to both boys and girls.” Describe your brand in three words…

Can you talk us through One We Like’s design process?
“It starts early – about a year before items hit the store. I try not to look at what other brands are doing or spend too much time on Instagram or Pinterest at this point – it’s so easy to get distracted. I work with Li, my illustrator, and we play around with lots of ideas until we land in a definite colour scheme and theme for the collection that we both like. It usually takes 100 cups of coffee and as many emails, texts and meetings until we come to a decision…” What inspired the SS18 range?
“When I started work on this collection, I was saddened by the political climate – both over in the US and here in Sweden, so I really wanted to do a range with a positive vibe and a strong sense of unity. We call it the One World collection. My favourite piece is the yellow sweater with the watercolour peace sign, it’s so happy!” Describe your brand in three words…

Totes amazing KATE FREUD MEETS HANDBAG DESIGNER MELISSA DEL BONO OF MELI MELO TO TALK FASHION, STYLE AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE IN HER LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY: HELENE SANDBERG

tepping inside Melissa del Bono’s impeccably chic West London home, it’s hard to believe that lurking behind the scenes is energetic three-year-old Baxter and his older sister, Clementina, six. The Notting Hill townhouse seems to provide plenty of space for the two youngsters to burn off steam, while Melissa busies herself in the kitchen making proper Italian coffee for us both. Her face lights up as she tells me how life has changed since the arrival of her children. “They’ve reminded me what it is to be innocent and curious again. My life is so enriched by these little people who become such a special mix of you and your husband!” Said husband, Doug, is now CEO of Meli Melo, the handbag label Melissa set up more than 10 years ago using her own savings. Following an early career in fashion PR, she decided she wanted to create a handbag line that was both understated yet luxe, and all handmade in Italy, from where her family hails. Though the brand started small, its unique designs quickly caught the attention of everyone from Sienna Miller and Poppy Delevingne to Alessandra Ambrosio, and having grown significantly since then, Meli Melo now boasts its own store on Portobello Road. Following nine months of nausea during both her pregnancies, when her babies arrived Melissa needed to find a way to savour her fleetingly precious

time with them while keeping the business going. So, Doug stepped in to help with the financial side and they worked so well together he took over as CEO in 2014. These days they happily live and work together, giving the 38-year-old designer the career and life balance she so wanted with her children. Like all mothers though, she never feels like she’s getting it quite right. “I wonder if I am juggling it all well enough, the guilt is constant!” she laughs. “But there are ways I make it work, and I have got better at managing it all. Like, even though Fashion Week is always at the beginning of the school term, I make sure I am around for the children. And in the first nursery days with Clementina, I didn’t appreciate the importance of the school holidays, but now
I see how burnt out and tired they are from school and how important it is for them to be with their parents without rules and routines.” The family home is situated just off Portobello Road, an area Melissa describes as feeling ‘like a village’. “I love that the kids know everyone here,” she explains. “The baker, the florist, the butcher – and their school and my office are less than five minutes’ walk from the house. It’s given them well-established roots in the city,” she says. It’s also an area known for its excellent childrenswear boutiques, including Caramel, Bonpoint and Petit Bateau, all of which Melissa has discovered to her delight. A particular favourite is Wild & Gorgeous. Melissa explains, “My husband loves to take the kids to the store in Westbourne
Grove. They do such fun pieces with the right amount of sparkle for the girls, and the coolest, quirkiest designs for boys.” If she isn’t shopping locally she ventures to Liberty on Regent Street for its iconic prints, and Oeuf NYC, the American brand which offers a perfect blend of old-school and quirky. Another go-to is thetot.com, an amazing curated collection of everything mothers need. And for shoes, it’s always Veja for Baxter and Chipie old-school plimsolls for both kids. Melissa says, “I grew up in them and they just bring back such good memories. Clementina was also just given a pair of Golden Goose sneakers too, the lucky girl!” When Melissa gets a minute to herself she loves nothing more than a wander down Golborne Road, where she finds

much of her inspiration for upcoming collections. “If I can steal an afternoon away, I love a yoga session followed by a juice at Bodyism. Or for something more adventurous, rollerblading in Hyde Park is so much fun, followed by a glass of wine at Dock Kitchen with friends,” she adds. After a day out with the children – favourite haunts include the Natural History Museum and Clip ’n Climb – home is very much a retreat from the hustle and bustle on their doorstep. The house is what Melissa describes as ‘cosy Scandi with an Italian twist’. The palette, all rich greens and white, with a dash of sage and blue thrown in for good measure. Family life focuses not only around the kitchen table but also the oversized, BB Italia sofa, the perfect place for Melissa and Doug to relax in the evenings and the children to

romp during the day. The linen cushions were bespoke from The Cloth Shop in Notting Hill, the velvet ones from the French store Caravane in Marylebone. Also from BB Italia was the striking portrait of a woman which sits above a chair upholstered by Melissa in fabric by Robert Allen, making for an eye-catching corner of the house. Another bold piece of art is the flamingo print, which was a gift from her husband for her 30th birthday. Melissa is also a big fan of antique shopping, finding pieces on Portobello Road and in Sunbury Antiques market. “Working in fashion, I’ve found increasingly that 56
interiors and art give me a real kick,” she says. But it’s in the décor of the children’s rooms where Melissa’s playful side really comes into its own. “It’s what I would call eclectic!” Melissa explains. “I bought the ‘candy bar’ garland from Liberty, picked up the mini deckchair on a trip to Polzeath in Cornwall, the ice cream stall at Les Couilles du Chien on Golborne Road, and the lampshade in Clementina’s room she drew on herself depicting her favourite dinosaurs and dogs. It’s kooky but I love it.” So what does next year have in store for the dynamic designer? “For now I am excited to have just launched a collaboration with fashion icon Olivia Palermo who brings her New York-cool to our new design, the Severine. There will be another collaboration this year, too, and I’m expanding in the US market so its going to be a busy one! “But I am lucky I love my job, and the fact I am managing to make it work around my children makes it all the better.” L melimelo.com

PREP TIME: 20-30 minutes (excluding freezing) MAKES: 6 penguins
INGREDIENTS • 150g dark chocolate chips • 18 orange M&Ms • 3 bananas • White ready-to-roll icing • Chocolate icing pen Peel the 3 bananas and cut each one in half. Place in the freezer. Melt the dark chocolate into a bowl over a pan of simmering water, until runny. Set aside and leave to cool slightly. To make the penguins’ eyes, roll out small balls using the ready-to-roll icing. Pipe the pupils onto the eyes using the chocolate icing pen. Once completely frozen, remove the bananas from the freezer. Dunk the top half of the banana into the melted chocolate, gently rolling so you get a longer coating on the back. Dunk the bottom of the banana in the chocolate to create the ‘feet’. Carefully stick on the eyes and do the same with the M&Ms for the nose and two for the feet. Place back in the freezer briefly to set the chocolate, then serve!

ith both Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day on the horizon, there’s no shortage of crafting going on in our household! Nanny Anita has been dreaming up ideas for Mother’s Day presents, and we’ve been busy making love heart crystals for the children to hand out at school and nursery. My idea of heaven on Mother’s Day is breakfast in bed surrounded by my family, and my new obsession has to be this eggs on toast recipe with a twist. My son came up with this idea for heartshaped omelettes and I could happily eat them every morning. And finally, on a shopping note, there are so many amazing children’s brands out there right now. This month I’ll be heading to the new store of French label Bonton, which has just opened up on Westbourne Grove, to pick up some lovely pieces for spring. L

BOOK SWAP 2018 VALENTINE’S PAPER PLATE DREAM CATCHER You will need: • paper plate • paint • paintbrush • wool • hole punch • feathers • beads Method • Cut out a heart shape in the centre of your paper plate. • Use the hole punch to make holes around the outside of the heart, plus three holes along the bottom of your plate, and one hole
at the top of it. • Paint your plate and leave it to dry. • Use wool to thread across the heart. • Cut three lengths of wool and tie them to the holes that you made at the bottom of the dream catcher. • Thread on the beads and feathers. • Finally, add some wool to the top so you can hang it up by your bed.
EASY EGGS ON TOAST You will need: • sourdough bread • 2 fresh eggs • butter • ketchup • avocado and tomatoes (optional)

Method • While you whisk your eggs in the bowl, pop some sourdough bread in the toaster or on the grill. • Heat a frying pan on medium heat and add a little oil or butter. • Pour your whisked egg mixture into
the pan. • After 30 seconds or so, flip the egg mixture over like a pancake and cook the other side. • My children love using cookie cutters to cut the omelette into shapes. Why not use a heartshaped cutter to add that extra special touch on Valentine’s Day! • Place your eggs on top of buttered toast and serve with ketchup or fresh avocado and tomatoes.
Although we’re huge fans of technology at home, I do still think it’s important for the children to read real books every day. This February, I’ll be taking them along to the free London Children’s Book Swap 2018 at the Artsdepot in North London, which looks really special. Fighting fat KEEPING OUR CHILDREN HEALTHY IN TODAY’S BUSY WORLD IS OFTEN EASIER SAID THAN DONE. RHIAN KIRKBY REVEALS HOW SIMPLE CHANGES CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
A
ccording to the government, by the age of 11 one in three children in England is overweight, and if trends continue, half of all children will be overweight or obese by 2020. The figures may sound shocking, but sadly they are true, with MPs even going as far as to describe the issue as a ‘national emergency’ and a problem which costs the NHS £5.1 billion each year. The need for drastic action to avert this crisis has been well documented over the last couple of years, with the likes of chef Jamie Oliver championing the move for change. But while campaigners push for some ‘big-picture’ solutions to the problem, parents are being encouraged to look a little closer to home.
PORTION CONTROL Research from the Infant & Toddler Forum shows that nearly 80 per cent of pre-schoolers are being given too much to eat, with 10 per cent of parents routinely serving up adultsized portions for their little ones. “Parents are much more likely to worry that their child is underweight, rather than overweight,” explains paediatric nutritionist Judy More, “and as a result, children are often encouraged to eat more than they need.” She advises parents to respect their child’s ability to know when they’re full and to stop offering alternatives, such as milk and crisps, if they don’t eat their meals. But portion control isn’t just a problem for pre-schoolers. According to child psychologist Gill Harris, it continues
throughout childhood and has far-reaching effects: “How much parents offer often determines how much children will eat and habits learned in early life generally tend to persist,” she says.
SNACKS Of course, it’s not just about mealtimes, snacks also have a big part to play. “Giving in to pester power for unhealthy and calorific snacks is easier than having to say no,” says nutritionist Ela Law, “but giving in means parents won’t be able to manage their child’s weight and energy balance.” That’s not to say that snacks should be banned. In fact, according to Judy More, children need two planned snacks a day – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. She emphasises these should be sensible, nutritious foods such as fruit, oatcakes or breadsticks, with sweet, high calorie and low nutrient foods being given just once a week. “The after-school snack has become a growing problem,” says Denise, a primary school teacher, “and banning certain snacks in schools has made the problem worse. It’s amazing to see how many parents greet their children every day with crisps, sweets or chocolate. We’ve stopped the ice cream van parking outside school, but you still see queues of parents at it just around the corner. This is where pester power really wins out.”
RECOGNISE THE SIGNS So with children becoming bigger in general is it harder to recognise the danger signs? 68
“Absolutely,” says professor Russell Viner from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, “because overall the population is getting heavier our idea of what is a normal weight changes.” Ela Law agrees, “there’s a very fine line between puppy fat and being overweight. Puppy fat isn’t the cute, innocent thing everyone loves in a baby – it’s in fact a very real problem.” Health professionals all advise that if you suspect there’s an issue it’s better to deal with it early. • According to the Early Years Nutrition Partnership, young children are eating the equivalent of eight sugar cubes a day (the recommended is three to four). Swap sweets and chocolate for malt loaf snack packs, oat cakes with cream cheese or sugar-free jelly. • Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for brain development and the nervous system. Get more oily fish into their diets by serving up salmon, fresh tuna and mackerel in a fish pie or homemade fish fingers. • Kids are also consuming too little fibre – just 10g per day, instead of the recommended 15g. Choose tasty sources such as apples, carrots, bananas and berries, and swap white bread and pasta for wholegrain varieties.

The mental health problems associated with obesity are as worrying as the physical impact it can have,” Russell Viner explains.
WHAT TO DO As adults, we think that going on a diet and LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK
cutting out foods is the way to lose weight, but this isn’t the right approach when it comes to our children. Children need a rich and varied diet – what they don’t need is low nutrient, high calorie food and drink. Judy More advises parents to control their child’s portions, give nutritious snacks and encourage regular movement, and says these things alone should enable children to lose their excess weight as they grow taller. “Subtlety is key,” says Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum, “the less children know about it the better.” 69
His advice has been backed up by a recent study from Liverpool University which found that a parent’s perception of their child’s weight can have an impact on the child’s actual weight. Children whose parents considered them to be ‘overweight’ tended to gain more weight over the following decade compared with those children whose parents thought they were a ‘normal weight’. Proof, maybe, that keeping quiet, leading by example and moving more really could have an impact on our children’s growing waistlines. L

SWEET POTATO Orange foods are an excellent source of vitamin A, an essential nutrient for keeping the eyes, skin and immune system healthy. Why not mash the potato and top with grated cheese to use as a topping for shepherd’s pie?
GREEK YOGHURT Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, beneficial bacteria that help to keep digestive systems healthy – and good immunity is linked to a well-functioning digestive system. Avoid flavoured yogurts as these are high in sugar, instead flavour natural yoghurt with pieces of fruit or honey.
CAULIFLOWER Cauliflower contains a substance called glutathione which seeks out any unwanted invaders and gets rid of them.
BANANAS Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6 which supports your child’s immune system by manufacturing antibodies and helping red
blood cells carry oxygen around the body to speed up the healing process.
EGGS Not only are eggs packed full of energyboosting B vitamins, they are also a source of zinc. Zinc plays a role in wound healing and creates enzymes which helps to fend off bugs.
SALMON Oily fish is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, thanks to the high omega 3 fatty acids. Make fishcakes by mashing together cooked salmon with potatoes and peas. Shape into patties, dip in beaten egg and breadcrumbs, and shallow fry.
SPINACH Spinach is a good source of iron, a mineral that transports oxygen around the body to fight infection. It also contains calcium which will nourish growing bones. Veggie sources of iron are more absorbable when paired with vitamin C, so eating spinach with red pepper will give a better boost than spinach alone.

IF YOU DON’T HURRY UP AND TAKE YOUR SKIS OFF, mummy will be late for her spa treatment.” My partner Ian is laughing at this outburst of pretension, though in a mountain resort where a bottle of water can set you back 9 CHF, surely the option of a post-ski spa visit is one’s right? The day before we had spent four hours on the train from Zurich. The hotel’s chauffeur was waiting to collect us from the station, whisking us off to a fairytale hotel complete with a ballroom-cumrestaurant, 20-metre infinity pool and spa, kids’ club and outdoor ice-skating. Grand Hotel Kronenhof is just 6km from St Moritz, in a little slice of utopia called Pontresina. On arrival we decide to embrace the spirit of Switzerland, where wellbeing is taken seriously, and undertake a family ‘detox’: a week without a single flickering blue screen or social media update, set in the silent mountains, our phones and iPads locked in the belly of the hotel’s safe, and our rooms emptied of everything electrical. After a whole day’s skiing, I was grateful for my impending spa treatment – a delicious detox bath and massage. Afterwards, I settle into the serenity of a waterbed overlooking a mountain panorama. As a dusky peach light scatters across the mountaintops, I wonder
how long this moment might last. The answer, as it turns out, was not very long. As I glance across the pool, I see Lillia collapsing into fits of giggles. “Mummy, it has underwater speakers,” she shrills. I wrap a gown around her and we take in the moment. “Look at those clouds,” she says, giving me a hug. The mornings are blessed with a beautiful light; cool, crisp and sunny. After breakfast, where Lillia’s cherub-like looks reward her with extra portions of waffles, watermelon juice, hot chocolate and strawberries, we are ready to be carried outside. I admit, we only attended Grand Hotel Kronenhof ’s sunrise walk in spirit, instead choosing to lie-in, though we do make an effort for the ski yoga, before heading to Lillia’s favourite: the snow parks. Its mixture of rolling humps and steep drops elicit shrieks of joy. When we return to our room, Lillia pounces on her bed, which each day has been showered with gifts from the hotel. When people talk of fairytale escapes, this is it and more. The one time I did have to whip my phone from the safe was met with a stern, “Mummy, put that down” when it would usually have got a, “Can I play on that?”. It’s fair to say, that’s a result. L

ollowing the dark, grey days of winter, we were very excited to be travelling to Oman – and from touchdown, it didn’t disappoint. It’s a country which delights in revealing the unexpected for a first-time visitor, bringing joy to adults and children alike. A jaw-dropping landscape that demands your attention, from moonscape to sand dunes, canyons to coral reefs, it’s a land of contrast and culture, with an old soul and new outlook. For heat seekers like us who wanted sunshine and a reasonable flight time, Oman ticked every box – sun, sea, sand, scenery and sights – but would it deliver? What I hadn’t put on my list was ‘surprises’, but within days I could have added it as my children unknowingly pushed their mental and physical limits. Seeing my eight-yearold son suspended perilously over a 1,000m canyon edge, 2,000m above sea level, with a harness and hard hat his only protection, was a heart-stopping moment so exhilarating I could barely look up to admire the scenery. Or my at-times-hesitant 10-year-old daughter confidently leading our camel caravan up sand dunes to watch the sunset beyond. What started as a luxe yet typical family holiday quickly morphed into a journey of selfdiscovery for us all. First stop was Muscat and the Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort, nestled beneath the golden Hajar mountains. With 198 seafacing rooms, Al Bandar is the middle of three hotels, five minutes’ walk from all the restaurants, the kids’ club, water sports and splash park. The numerous pools interconnect so you can actually swim through the resort, but if that feels too much like hard work, jump on an inflatable ring and let the lazy A boat trip to Dimaniyat Island revealed another side to Oman

river escort you between facilities. Having built the property on a secluded bay which is also a protected turtle-nesting site, the hotel has a dedicated turtle ranger. One night after dinner at the Bait Al Bahr seafood restaurant, our phone rang and Mohamed the ranger told us, “There’s a turtle on the beach laying her eggs.” Springing out of bed, we ran, pyjamaclad, down to the sea to watch a majestic female Hawksbill make her nest – a deeply moving sight to have witnessed. Our first excursion with our Abercrombie & Kent guide and driver, Quais, was to Nizwa and the old fort. The oldest part was built in the ninth century to protect Oman from the Portuguese; it resembles a giant sandcastle and boasts all kinds of gruesome defence mechanisms which the children loved hearing about, such as pitfalls, date oil traps 79
and arrow-slit windows. From there we drove through lush date plantations, past the pretty hillside village of Birkat Al Mawz, before embarking on the 36km winding road to Jabal Al Akhdar, the green jewel of the Al Hajar mountain range. What started as a luxe yet typical family holiday quickly morphed into a journey of self-discovery for us all and wadis pepper the view. Contemporary Arabian rooms, some with private infinity pools, emphasise the splendour of Omani design and floor-to-ceiling windows maximise the vista. Activities include climbing and abseiling along the Via Ferrata route, where we could experience the thrill of dangling off the canyon’s sheer drop, a first for my son and the start of a new passion. With sunrise yoga on a suspended platform, guided hikes through ancient villages, mountain biking, archery, and cookery school including a spice-buying trip to Nizwa souk, this is a resort of endless experiences authentic to its unique location. Following a comfortable night in the cool mountain climate, we set off to Wahiba Sands. More thrills and spills awaited as Quais let the tyres down and took us dune bashing. Skidding and sliding up and down, the children delighted as we tumbled around.
After a revitalising lunch at the Desert Nights Camp, a collection of semi-permanent tented suites, we mounted our camels (daughter at the helm!) and made the half-hour trek to our secluded tent in time to watch the sunset, a truly magical moment for my mental memory bank. Canvas Club offers bespoke, luxury camping in solitary locations, and our tent was a spacious haven, decked with ornate rugs and bedlinen, with a separate bathroom tent housing a hot-water shower, basin and toilet. What is meant to be fun may just feel like more hard work for a child
IS IT EVER OK TO QUIT? When your child wants to abandon their hobby, should you let them, or insist they stick with it? GEORGINA BLASKEY finds out
E
ver heard the phrase, winners never quit and quitters never win? For many adults, the word ‘quit’ is so loaded with failure, that as parents we can find the concept hard to stomach. Why? Our view of quitting is intrinsically linked to our own upbringing. Were we allowed to quit activities we didn’t enjoy? Were you one of those forced to perform in violin recitals, only to deliver an at-best squeaky, stilted version of Three Blind Mice while your parents smiled, so happy they’d given you the musical opportunity they never had? There are scenarios where quitting is the right thing to do but there are also times when perseverance must be encouraged. If your child, who has until now been an enthusiastic and successful member of her swim squad, one day says she’s quitting, it might be a shock. Until then she has enjoyed it, as a family you’ve designed your lives around her schedule, and she has genuine talent. What do you do? Clinical psychologist Dr Nihara Krause suggests going through a process to ascertain the situation: “Consider their age,” she explains. “Children will expect different things at different stages. A younger child will expect instant gratification so it may be difficult for them to wait and learn. It’s better to try the activity a few times at taster sessions to work out if it’s suiting them.” You should also be honest about your goals. “Parents may want to give their children opportunities they missed out on, they may have had to stick at something themselves or have time
and money invested, but it’s important to be honest about why you are being so insistent.” Getting the balance between quit and grit starts with asking the right questions. Does your child want to quit because they feel like a failure? Do they feel awkward when they are there? Do they have friends there? If they are finding it hard to integrate you may need to help them boost their social skills. If they feel anxious, you may need to offer support. “Many children are doing so much, they are tired,” reminds Dr Krause. “They have school, homework, and then a club. What is meant to be fun may just feel like more hard work.” We are all guilty of overscheduling our children with extracurricular activities,
holiday reading and homework. With that in mind, I feel the other things they do must be enriching. At times, this means doing things they don’t feel like. Often they’ll go lukewarm on choir practice or Saturday football, only to come back round a week later. Persevering through the dips is part of the journey. But when a dip turns into a desire to stop, how do we teach children to quit healthily? The language we use can have an impact. We can talk about giving something ‘a go’, about choosing something else. If we despair or get angry, we are reflecting our feelings on to our child. We may also put them off trying new things. Children generally don’t want to disappoint their parents so it’s important to give them a clear understanding of what is involved. For example, if you’re going skiing for the first time, explain to your child that it’s something ‘we have to try three or four times before we feel confident and able to do it’. Be aware that different children respond to different activities. Some like discipline and rigour, others will not. “The motivation they need to produce a result must come from them, and they need to feel they can build on the result,” says Dr Krause. “If you have a child who is regularly quitting, look for a pattern. It could be related to confidence, anxiety or social skills. Do they need help?” Being clear about why they want to quit, understanding the reason and accepting their decision is a learning curve for the whole family. Sometimes quitting can be the bravest decision we make. L
IF WE DESPAIR OR GET ANGRY AT OUR CHILDREN, WE MAY PUT THEM OFF TRYING NEW THINGS but why? To make them more appealing to their secondary school? To compete with other mums? Personally I want to expose my children to a variety of activities in the hope they will find something they enjoy. While my daughter most likely won’t perform with the Royal Ballet, she may develop a lifelong love of dance. My son may not play rugby for England, but he’ll cheer them on from the stand with a good understanding of teamwork and the complexities of the game. In my view there are some things children should never quit – academic effort is non-negotiable in our house (please note, effort, rather than attainment). They will learn their times tables and cursive handwriting, they will finish their

UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE STORY There are often two sides to a story. Listen to your child and then listen to their teacher or coach in order to make sure you have all the facts.
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMITMENT We want to teach our children to keep their commitments in life, so we must teach them to understand the importance of following through with what they say they’ll do.
PERSISTENCE IS THE KEY Thomas Edison famously ‘failed’ 10,000 times on his way to inventing the light bulb. What if he had simply quit along the way?
QUITTING ON IMPULSE IS MISGUIDED Encourage your child to spend time reflecting on things in order to make a decision they won’t regret.
CHILDREN OFTEN QUIT FOR THE WRONG REASON Try to get to the bottom of why your child wants to quit. This may take some decoding on your part. “It’s not fun anymore” could mean “Kids make fun of me.”

We catch up with NAOMI BARTHOLOMEW, head of the girls’ prep school How long have you been at St Catherine’s School?
I joined St Catherine’s in 2009 as the deputy head and later became head of the prep school in 2012. What do you see as the school’s main strengths?
We take enormous pride in providing an environment that is both nurturing and challenging in equal measure. We have hugely talented and committed staff, and the relationships between the staff, parents and girls are outstanding. How do you ensure every girl achieves her potential?
We recognise the partnership between home and school is the key to a successful education. Hence, we adopt an open-door policy for parents, who we hope feel welcome at all times. We ensure that the girls are provided with activities that challenge them. Specialist teachers in PE,
mark 125 years. And, as the great-great granddaughter of Lord Ashcombe, one of the school’s founders, HRH Duchess of Cornwall agreed to be patron.
ICT and Music enhance the work of the form tutors, and the girls are taught in superb surroundings. We also make time to pause during a busy week. Assemblies, form times and tutor group activities provide this chance to reflect. Weekly chapel services also play a key role in the girls’ education here.
At what age can pupils board at St Catherine’s?
We have occasional boarders in Year 6 (aged 10-11) then more convert to boarding as they proceed through the Senior School. We welcome full, weekly and occasional boarders and many London families find our weekly boarding option, with a bus taking girls home on a Friday night and back to school on Sunday evening, works very well.
Can you tell us a bit about St Catherine’s history?
Having opened to 11 boarders and just six day students back in September 1885, St Catherine’s grew in popularity. By 1890, the buildings were extended and in 1894, the chapel was completed. By 1945, there were 97 boarders and 155 day girls, and in 1949, the governors purchased Church House which forms the focal part of the prep school. Decades of expansion then followed – the Anniversary Halls, which house a gymnasium, sports hall and an auditorium, were opened to

HOCUS POCUS : CHILDREN’S MAGIC WORKSHOP Saturday 24 February, 1.30pm. West End Magic arrives at the Museum of Comedy for a series of workshops this year. Welcoming children aged seven to 13, the workshops are led by top Magic Circle magicians. They cover the basics of magic and teach tricks using everyday objects, with a chance for kids to do a show for parents at the end.
Sunday 11 March, 11am to 3pm. Woodberry Wetlands is giving families the chance to learn all about hedgehogs and their habitats with a variety of drop-in activities. Take home your own homemade clay hedgehog, play the hedgehog ‘survival game’ and take part in a free workshop to build your own hedgehog house to put in your garden. Spaces for the house-building workshop are limited, so be sure to register your interest in advance.

BONTON Co-founder Irène talks work life, her love for London and the key to Bonton’s success How did life begin for Bonton?
Thomas’s parents founded Bonpoint in 1974, so kids’ fashion has always been in the family. When Thomas started working for Bonpoint he was in charge of the IT department, and I was working for Condé Nast, but I became friends with a lot of the girls working in the design office at Bonpoint. Thomas’s mother, Marie-France, had the idea of building a project together – in 2000 there was almost nothing for kids, and she had in mind a children’s basics brand that was more casual than Bonpoint. When I became pregnant, she asked me to join the company to learn more about the business and slowly we started the Bonton story together. Describe a typical day for you.
We are up at 7am every day – our three
children have school from 8am, Monday to Saturday. We have breakfast as a family – I love this time together, even though now it lasts only 10 minutes because my teenagers are always running late! Then I go to the office – it’s close to one of our stores so usually we pop in there to discuss merchandising or displays. Then I try to go to the gym, around 7pm, two or three times a week. After, I’ll have dinner at home with the kids and watch a movie, or we go out for dinner with friends.
How do you juggle family with work?
What’s the best thing about your job?
I love the energy of this town, and I think English people are so chic! We had been looking for a store here for over 10 years, so the opening was one of our favourite moments of 2017.
The people! I love that moment when an idea lands on the table, and a good idea can be brought by anyone on the team. I think this is one of the keys to Bonton’s success, we have a very collegial way of working and everyone’s opinion counts. And I am sure our customers feel that behind every product there is a mother or father who has already approved it. I also love meeting with authors, artists, designers and other brands – it’s very rewarding. Who is the Bonton customer?
I like to think that we have multiple kinds because of our variety of products and price points. The brand appeals to everyone. Bonton made its UK debut with a new store in Westbourne Grove in November 2017
With Khadija, our nanny. I’ve known her since before having my son, and she has been there with us since. The only way to juggle family with work, for me, is knowing someone is at home with my children and doing things as well as I would, or even better – especially with the cooking! You recently opened Bonton’s first UK store in Notting Hill. What do you love about London?
What advice would you give to other mothers wanting to launch a business?
Find your identity and the specificity of your project and stick to it. Never get greedy, even if you are sometimes tempted. I am convinced that when you are faithful to your project, the customers are never disappointed. What’s next for Bonton?
