EDITOR'S LETTER
Welcome
Ahhh… Christmas! It’s the time of year that unites us like no other. You’ll be happy to learn we’ve got all your festive conundrums covered: from what on earth to put under the tree for your little monkeys (p.53) and how to dress them to see the grandparents (p.71), to which show to see in London (p.28) and how to prevent them from getting stinking colds (p.85). We also learn from Esther Walker what made her fall in love with the festive season all over again (p.62) and meet up with our shiny new contributor, Olivia Falcon, who kicks off her Little Luxuries column, and introduces us to her adorable daughters (p.64). Developmentally, we look at the ways to get little clock-watchers to start telling the time (p.39) and how best to transform a nursery into a big room (p.93). For Big Londoners, we explore the capital’s hottest spots for date nights, culture fixes and general, carefree, tomfoolery this Christmas (p.48). We can all dream! Let us know what you think of all the above and more by emailing us at editor@littlelondonmagazine.co.uk and have the very best Christmas.

different generations engage in a production together. At a Christmas show the theatre audience will be made up of a wide variety of ages ranging all the way from five to 95 – and they all get something slightly different
from the occasion. I feel that the sense of a shared experience among the generations is something really special.
Do you have a favourite Christmas show or a favourite childhood memory of theatre at Christmas? I was taken to the pantomimes at The Leatherhead Theatre as a child and have a vivid memory of the good fairy’s magic wand. It was silver and sparkly and I was convinced it was real. It made me feel all tingly. It made me want to be on stage and triggered my career!
What special considerations, if any, go into making a family show?
I don’t think I treat working on a family show any differently to when I’m working on an adult piece, it’s just the material that’s different. When I started making work for early Sally Cookson, family years audiences (three to six years) I quickly theatre maestro
SHOW TIME
realised that unless a child was engaged during a performance they would let you know in no uncertain terms. “I don’t like it” and “I want to go home now” were comments that chilled me to the bone and I strived to ensure that every moment was precisely and meticulously crafted. Of course, adult audiences seldom shout out: “I don’t like it” and “I want to go home now” – they are far too polite – but I always try and imagine that it could happen and that forces me to strive for clarity and precision in every moment.

You adapted We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Stick Man beautifully for younger audiences. What are the challenges of adapting a picture book into a fully-fledged piece of theatre?
When you’re adapting an iconic picture book, it’s vital to retain the essence and heart of the book but hugely important to remember that you’re turning it into theatre, thereby changing it into something new entirely. I enjoy interpreting, adapting and bringing the imagination of the creative team and actors into the equation. We're Going on a Bear Hunt became a celebration of ‘playing’ and everything used in the show could be found in a primary school classroom or play box at home. For example the mud became brown poster paint, the river was created using blue buckets with real water inside and the grass was long, flappy strips of plastic. Children come away from the show and go straight home and act out what they’ve just seen on stage – pulling everything out from under the kitchen sink in the process and making a lovely happy mess. I always strive to engage a child’s imagination when making early years work and be as playful as possible.
Do you ever think about your own children when you're in the process of creating children’s shows?
My son Arthur is 20 and my daughter Nell is 17 – how did that happen? They are very fond of a show called No Loud Bangs which was performed at Bristol Old Vic over 10 years ago. It was about the relationship between a boy and his toys and was touching and funny. They adored it and still talk about it today. I always think about
them when making a show. We're Going on a Bear Hunt came about because they were obsessed with the book and having read it for about the hundredth time, it was then that the idea for a show popped into my head.
What do you think makes a great Christmas family show?
A great stage show for Christmas time has to have a fantastic story and big heart – and something that reminds us of what it is to be human.

Solomon (eight) is an aspiring Arsenal football player, responsible, kind and smart. Leo (six) is a technological angel, a ray of sunshine and positivity. And Naomi is four going on 14 and doesn’t think she’s any smaller than her brothers; a lioness in training.
You live in Hampshire but, until recently, lived in Pimlico. What were your favourite things to do with kids in that area? We always went to the Saturday Farmers Market in Pimlico Road – it was a great
way to introduce the kids to genuinely fresh and healthy foods in a fun way. We also shopped at Daylesford for the same reason.
On a rainy day in the capital where do you usually end up?
When they were younger we’d often end up at a soft-play area but now the Tate Modern is great as it’s so interactive for kids of pretty much any age – and there’s a nice café for everyone to refuel in too.
What has been your most successful family day out?
London is super child-friendly with tons of restaurants and museums Would you say London is a child friendly city? What are its pros and cons? City life is amazing when your kids are young. There are so many classes and playgroups to support young mothers and parents – and those early years are tough! As far as cities go,

What are your three hot tips for London days out with young kids?
Take some delicious healthy snacks. Our Rebel Kitchen mylks come in a handy carton with a straw. Do it with a friend and their kids to make it fun. There is a great newsletter called urbanexplorer.com and they have really great ideas for things going on in London at the weekend.
What are your favourite grown-up hangouts or things to do in London?
I love the Wild Food Café and Vitao – two amazing veggie restaurants – the butternut volcano at Vitao is yum and the sourdough falafel sandwich at Wild Food is something I have dreams about! I love going running in Hyde Park and visiting the Serpentine Gallery while I’m there. Late at Tate Britain is a good place to meet girlfriends in the evening for a drink. LL
Pollock’s Toy Museum was one of the most unexpected – like stepping back in time! The kids thought it looked like a haunted house with its creaky stairways, but they loved the old toys on display.
Where do you keep meaning to go?
To more museums – and Longleat Safari Park.

As anyone who's ever gone on a
motorway journey with a young child knows, children seldom have a sense of time, beyond their own body clocks and “how many sleeps?”. The immortal question: “Are we nearly there yet?” is one which has been repeated up and down the country, ever since the invention of tarmac. And whatever your reply, you can guarantee your back-seat passenger will ask the same question five minutes later. Although perennially irritating for the adult at the steering wheel, it also reveals the
BECKY DICKINSON EXPLORES WAYS TO HELP CHILDREN DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF SEASONS AND CLOCKS
difficulty children have in grasping abstract concepts. As one retired assistant head teacher with more than 40 years’ primary experience, says: “Time is the hardest thing to teach a child because it’s not concrete. It’s not like the number three that you can represent with three oranges. Numbers are abstract but children can learn them because they can be represented. You can hold three things but can’t hold a minute.” Although learning to tell the time and understanding what 45 minutes feels like can take years of practise, children can learn to appreciate time in its wider sense from a
very early age. One of the best ways we as parents can encourage this is by fostering an awareness of the changing seasons, taking our children on walks and immersing them in nature all year round. Ben Evans is the headmaster at Edge Grove School in Hertfordshire and a strong advocate of getting children outdoors. He says: “Whatever the weather, dress them up and get them outside. Even if it’s a wet, windy, cold day, as long as they are wearing appropriate clothing, they will appreciate and understand the weather and what it is actually like for the natural world around

DEVELOPMENT
them. Th is can’t be experienced from the comfort of the sofa or from watching it on the television.” Ben also advises keeping a photographic, or written, record of nature as the seasons change and he says: “Getting children to express their thoughts and explain what they are seeing and experiencing is the best way to achieve the learning outcomes you want. Passive learning will only get you so far.” As children acquire an awareness of the natural passage of time, they will also develop an understanding of time as part of everyday life. Growing up, their days become more structured and the notion of time becomes integrated into their daily routine and vocabularies. Children begin to recognise parts of the day such as ‘breakfast time’, ‘school time’ and ‘bedtime’. Th is repetition of events helps them learn that certain things happen at a defined time each day. It’s recommended to have clocks in every room so children will become used to the analogue clock and start to associate events such as breakfast, lunch and supper with the time, rather than just doing them in isolation.
Learning to tell the time is an important part of a child’s education, but as with all learning, the best approach is to make it fun. “Having a large clock painted on the playground, so that children can physically move around the clock face depending on what time they are asked to show, is a great way to encourage learning. Learning by doing is so much more purposeful than sitting at a desk and using text books or worksheets. You could use your lawn or patio to draw out a clock face using chalk.” What’s more, parents can help children appreciate what time feels like by asking the child to see how many claps or jumps they can do in a minute, for example, as our former assistant head teacher points out. “Once they can truly understand this, only then is it appropriate to teach them how to tell the time,” she says. “You can teach a child to read a clock but this is meaningless without an understanding of what a second, minute or hour is.” Learning to tell the time doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s a skill that all children will eventually master. If only to end that eternal question: “Are we nearly there yet?”. LL

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF:
DONNA WILSON

Donna Wilson’s products
crop up in homes across the country. The award-winning designer – who scooped an Elle Decoration British Design Award in 2010 – is known for her interior indulgences from quirky cushions to creative ceramics. Donna has now turned her expertise to childrenswear. Working in collaboration with John Lewis, the collection went on sale at the end of summer and, as you would expect, is bursting
with personality, off-thewall colours and woodland wonders. We found out more…
Can you tell us a bit more about your background, and how you got into the wonderful world of design?
I studied Textile at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen and graduated in 1999. I then got a job in a knitwear company as an assistant designer for a year. After that, I went back to college to do my MA at the
Royal College of Art, where I specialised in Mixed Media Textiles, and my brand began in 2003.
John Lewis have been a big part of your journey, how did that all start?
I’ve been working with John Lewis for about six years now starting off with my homeware range. We’ve always had a great working relationship. I still remember going in for that first meeting and one
of the buyers saying: “You’re probably wondering why we’ve asked you here.” It felt very surreal as it does with big department stores, but the relationship has continued to grow and they’ve been so supportive right from the start.
Tell us some more about your recent childrenswear collaboration together.
Last year one of John Lewis’ childrenswear designers, Beatrice Lubega, got in

The Donna Wilson childrenswear collection is exclusive to John Lewis touch. We met and she suggested working together on a childrenswear line. This is something I had always wanted to do, especially after having Eli (now two), but always thought I’d do it alone because I can be quite protective over my work. But after a great meeting it just felt right. The range offers something quite different for John Lewis, like the little leggings for boys. The line has been received really well so far.
All of your collections is highly influenced by nature and animals – what wildlife steals your heart the most?
Was your son Eli a big part of the picture when you decided to cover childrenswear?
Which artists and designers do you admire the most?
Absolutely. When this began, Eli had recently been born so I had in mind what I wanted him to wear. I’m into practical clothing, when they’re young children need to be comfy. I also love non-gender-specific clothes. And of course lots of colours, patterns and animals.
I love all animals, if I wasn’t in design I’d probably be a zookeeper. We recently moved out to Leytonstone and we’re right by allotments – I even saw a squirrel this morning. That’s probably one of my favourite animals, and foxes. We’ve also just bought a kitten, a great first pet for Eli.
I like Alexander Girard, Stig Lindberg and my grandma (but she wasn’t famous!).
Outside of your London studio, where’s the best place to go for creative inspiration?
I love the countryside, and being surrounded by nature. I recently went to a small remote island off
the coast of Newfoundland and came back feeling really inspired by its landscape and houses, but normally I find inspiration everywhere... a tiny piece of cloth, a picture in a book, or an object from my travels.
After a great tenth year, what has been the highlight of your career so far? There have been so many highlights since beginning in 2003 – working with a great team of people; meeting designers like Rob Ryan and Orla Kiely, and making the creatures and props for a music video for Gideon Conn. Winning the Elle Decoration British Designer of the Year award in 2010 was a fantastic achievement, and the childrenswar collaboration is a very exciting venture for me. LL

REMEMBER, REMEMBER… Bonfi re Night is one of my favourite events of the year and I love how excited my children get. Coram’s Fields is on my list this year as it’s said to be the most child friendly. Before we set out, I’ve promised the children a ‘Hot Chocolate Bar’, for a treat and a fun way of getting them involved. Here’s how to set it up… Fill a thermos of hot chocolate (not too hot) and lay out little pots of sprinkles, chocolate buttons, crumbled flakes, mini marshmallows and edible glitter if you can find it. Hand everyone a mug of hot choc topped with whipped cream, and they can help themselves to the rest.

HOPE & CHARITY
A charity that I hold close to my heart is Kids Company and this is the time of year that people tend to help. They do wonderful stockings for children who wouldn’t normally get a present under the tree on Christmas day. The boys, they tell me, lose out by far the most every year. I started a ‘Kids giving Kids’ campaign with My Baba blog last year where children coloured in a bag, filled it with five items and then sent them off to Kids Company. It’s a wonderful way for our children to learn about others who are less fortunate and about the importance of giving. Email: christmas@kidsco.org.uk

I love this time of year, not just because I get to wrap up in cosy knits but because it’s my birthday and there are always so many fun things to do with the family. A cardboard box is a simple way to create hours of fun...
My husband’s birthday is on Christmas Eve and I always try to do something special. Last year we had reindeers in the garden and friends over for Christmas drinks. The children went crazy for them so I’ll take them to see Rudolph again at London Zoo. A magical thing to do if you are bored of lining up for Santa! zsl.org
YOU WILL NEED
A big cardboard box (the bigger the
better)
A box cutter Duck tape
Paint and paintbrushes
Anita always asks me to keep cardboard boxes and with our delivery nation, that’s not too hard. This month we’re making an airplane for the children. It’s not only fun to make but the kids love getting involved and there are so many ways you can decorate them. We keep these boxes for about a month and the children get so much entertainment out of them, it’s brilliant for imaginative play too.
HOW TO MAKE 1. Start by cutting off all the flaps except for one of the smaller ones (that one will be for the control panel later on) 2. On the cut-off flaps draw your wings and tailfin and cut them out. On the tail fin cut a slit into the middle of the base so that you can slide it onto the box 3. Paint and decorate your aeroplane, including the wings and tailfin 4. Once it has dried, stick everything together

Come Fly with Me
We are going to make Thank You cards instead of Christmas cards this year. We’ll make mini fingerprint cards with our favourite character, the Frozen snowman Olaf, as our subject. To start, spread white paint on a paper plate, dip your thumb in it and then press it on to a dark piece of sugar paper. This forms the body. Do the same thing with a finger to make the head. Once dry, paint an orange nose and use a black felt tip to give him eyes, a mouth, limbs and buttons. You can always add a scarf. Let them do as many as they can on the page, leaving enough space to cut them out. Using a large piece of card or paper, cut enough rectangles that can be folded in half to make your card, and stick Olaf on the front. These can also be doubled up as little gift tags.

LITTLE LONDON LOOKS INSIDE…THE BEAUMONT A new Mayfair hotel is offering the ultimate indulgence for couples this Christmas
THE BEAUMONT, MAYFAIR
Restaurant maestros Chris Corbin and Jeremy King have certainly made their mark on London, from the classic elegance of The Wolseley to the chic bistros of Café Colbert and Brasserie Zédel by way of Viennese eateries The Delaunay and Fischer’s. But The Beaumont, a stunning art deco edifice looming large in a surprisingly quiet square just minutes from Oxford Street, is the restaurateurs’ first ever hotel. Little London was lucky enough to take a sneak peek inside the venue, before it opened earlier this month and, from our reckoning, it is set to become one of London’s chicest landmarks. A paean to the golden age of luxury hospitality and 1930s Americana, the hotel is brimming with eccentric details and classic touches. The walls of The Cub Room – a residents-only bar – are bursting with period oil paintings while on every floor, a black Steepletone telephone sits on a sideboard, as if waiting for a call from the fictional Jimmy Beaumont himself. The rooms bear the same impressive nuances, from hidden mirrors in the bureau to coffee tables laden with books. Then there’s the exclusive onebedroom suite called Room designed by Antony Gormley and the lavish five-room Presidential Suite complete with a kitchen, vast living spaces and a balcony with a view over the rooftops of Mayfair. So whether it’s a festive post-shopping bourbon in The American Bar, feasting in The Colony Grill Room or escaping for the night in a luxury suite, it looks very much like there’s a new hot spot in town this Christmas. thebeaumont.com

Christmas crazy
Esther's passion for Christmas led to her dressing up son Sam as an elf. Kitty (below with Sam) has managed to escape the same fate...
How it took having children for Esther Walker to enjoy the festive season to its fullest
Boys ruined Christmas for me.
From the age of 16 onwards Christmas was no longer just about chain-gobbling Quality Street in front of Back to the Future or fretting over the dent in my pocket money that three sisters’ Christmas presents made. It was about having a boyfriend or not having a boyfriend. Having a boyfriend meant high-stake gift-exchanges, last-minute trysts, pained phone calls when separated from each other by our rotten families. Not having a boyfriend meant being all gloomy because everyone else was paired off and kissing under the mistletoe while I was just sat at home with my parents and sisters, eating Quality Street. And the rest of the time I was usually between boyfriends, having just been dumped or in love with some awful two-timing rat. In my mid 20s Christmas got really bad. A painfully drawn-out office crush who had

strung me along for 18 months without ever actually “doing” anything (he had a girlfriend) finally revealed to me at the office Christmas party that we would never be together. Christmas that year was officially cancelled as far as I was concerned. But then quite soon afterwards I met and married my husband, Giles, and order was restored. Christmas was no longer a stupid schmaltz-fest, riddled with possibly relationship-ending quandaries. There was me, there was my husband, there was our house, and our Christmas tree. Perfect. It was so much more pure, somehow, so much more like the cosy Christmases of my childhood than any Christmas of recent years. It helps that I married a fellow fireside-loving homebody. And then we had kids. Kitty (three) and Sam (one) have freed me to enjoy Christmas in an unfettered way that I hadn’t since before my stupid hormones kicked in.
I go, unashamedly, completely over the top. We have a Christmas tree that touches the ceiling and enormous stockings generously stuffed. We have an afternoon Christmas party for kids, with a kids entertainer and a friend who turns up dressed as Father Christmas with a sack of gifts for all the children. Last year I even dressed Sam up as an elf. Suddenly the whole festive season has real meaning again, real magic. Last year Kitty vaguely started to “get” Christmas and enjoy and understand presents. This year she is going to go bonkers. I can’t wait! On the day itself we put on our best clothes for Christmas day and see family, who shower the kids with treats. Then we use the children as an excuse to be back home by 5pm; we give them supper and put them to bed, after which we sit down with a sherry and a showing of Back to the Future – and a tin of Quality Street. Summer Litchfield catches up with Little London’s new luxury columnist Olivia Falcon and meets the two mini fashionistas that have won her heart There’s a reason that mother and
journalist Olivia Falcon always looks so polished. Her first job was in New York, assisting the buying director of Barney’s, and her second job was assistant to Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue. “My days at Barney’s were pretty crazy,” Olivia smiles. “It was the mid-nineties when supermodels where at their peak, lots of exciting fashion names were emerging and everyone travelled on Concorde. Working as Alex Shulman’s assistant, however, was about as far away from The Devil Wears Prada scenario as you can imagine. She’s the most inspirational woman and I learned so much.” After graduating to the features desk at Vogue, Olivia moved to Tatler where she eventually found her true vocation and became the Health & Beauty Director. “Eight years later,” she says, “I was only five 64 NOV/DEC 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk
months into my maternity leave with my eldest daughter Grace when I discovered I was pregnant again! Although I loved my time at Condé Nast I decided that that was the time to go freelance so that I could set my own schedule and spend more time with my girls.” Olivia now enjoys writing for a
did find the night feeds and the physical side of having a small baby a challenge. GeorgiaMae got bronchitis when she was just eight months so we were up a lot with her and she had an awful cough that lasted months. Luckily my husband is a saint and really helped out in the early days.”
I was a bit of a worrier before I had kids, but since I became a mum I don't sweat the small stuff wide variety of publications, consulting for luxury beauty brands and, most of all, being with her daughters: three-year-old Grace and two-year-old Georgia-Mae. How does she find motherhood? “I have been broody since I was about 16, so being a mum is a dream come true – although, like most mothers, I
Now they are older, Olivia and her husband, Peter, are enjoying watching their daughters become “little people with their own opinions”. “Both are pretty strong characters. Grace is the negotiator; she knows how to talk her way round the most stubborn adult. And

GLAM MAMA
Georgia-Mae is the entertainer; she loves singing and dancing and will basically put on a show wherever there’s an audience – even at the bus stop. Both of them make me laugh on a daily basis and are very girly girls. They are always raiding my make-up drawers and shoe closet!” So they take after their mother in that respect. Does she feel that being a mum has changed her at all? “I was a bit of a worrier before I had kids but since I became a mum I don’t sweat the small stuff; I don’t have time. I am a total geek when it comes to organisation. I plan way ahead. But my kids are definitely teaching me to live in the moment.” Olivia grew up in Notting Hill but now lives in St John’s Wood in her husband’s old bachelor pad: “It’s a beautiful, open plan apartment that used to be the studio of Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse. For a while we were set on moving but we couldn’t find anything that we loved as much as here, so we stayed put.” A city girl at heart – and it seems London still has the strongest hold – Olivia loves the fact that there are so many parks close to her home and is happiest feeding the ducks and swans on Maida Vale canal. “I love the local shops in the area too. One of my favourites is Clifton Greens in Maida Vale. They have the most incredible selection of exotic fruits and vegetables.” The family are foodies and can be found at farmers markets or at the Ginger Pig in Marylebone. “We’ll probably be heading there soon to order our Christmas fare,” Olivia smiles, looking forward to the occasion. It seems like this particular glossy jetsetter is more than happy to be a bit more homely, for the most part, right now. LL

Keep kids strong this winter with the best bug-busting dishes. Georgie Soskin of Cooking them Healthy shows us how…
are rich in health-boosting antioxidants can make a real difference to your body’s ability to ward off bugs. Antioxidants are valuable nutrients, including vitamins A, C and E, beta-carotene and selenium – studies have shown that these help provide us with additional immunity against colds and infections. Antioxidants also have an anti-inflammatory role within the body which means that focusing on specific foods when you are ill can make a significant difference to your recovery. Inflammation is part of the body’s natural response to an infection and plays a vital role in helping the body’s healing process. However, levels of inflammation can get out of control, leading to increased symptoms, weakened immunity and potential chronic illness. Anti-inflammatory nutrients can be used effectively to help bring the body’s immune response back into balance. Here we have chosen some brilliant store cupboard and freezer staples packed with goodies.

Choosing ingredients that
GARLIC, ONIONS & GINGER
These all have wonderful natural bacteria-fighting and anti-inflammatory properties. Garlic helps protect us against colds; the finer you chop the garlic the more pungent it becomes. Onions also have useful anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties. Ginger is very warming and acts as a natural decongestant. It can also have a soothing effect on digestion and nausea.
SPICES
A fab source of antioxidants, traditionally spices are used for all manner of conditions, from helping to aid digestion to reducing inflammation. Don't be afraid of introducing heat and flavour to your children's diet. Chillies are rich in vitamins A & C which are useful immune-boosting nutrients and the capsaicin in chillies can help to clear congestion from a cold.
LEAFY GREENS
Vegetables such as kale, spinach, Swiss chard and pak choi (all in season over the winter) are packed with vitamins, minerals and immune-boosting antioxidants. It can be helpful to try adding just a small amount to familiar dishes; soups and sauces are also a great way of disguising greens as they can be combined with other flavours and textures.
“SOME NUTRIENTS HELP OUR BODIES TO ABSORB OTHER NUTRIENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, VITAMIN C HELPS US TO ABSORB IRON AND AS A RESULT THEY ARE OFTEN FOUND TOGETHER IN FOODS, SUCH AS KALE. ”

tip
To check the heat of the chillies cut the tip o and test it on your tongue. The heat is in its seeds and the membrane skin running inside of the chilli, so make sure you scrape both of these out.

ING COLD-BUS&T K ALE CURRY COCONUT
This is not a hot curry, but has a lovely subtle heat perfect for this time of year. Turmeric contains an important compound called curcumin which has potent antiinflammatory properties. Turmeric has a mild fragrance and vivid orange colour which instantly brings life to any dish. Cumin is a rich source of the mineral iron, which plays a key role in immune health and helps support healthy digestion.
Serves 4-6
2 tbsp oil 1/2 tsp turmeric 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp cinnamon 2 cloves garlic, pasted or finely chopped 2cm ginger, grated 240g chickpeas – drained and rinsed or dry chana dhal 1 large or 2 small sweet potatoes (approximately 220-250g) 1 large onion (approximately 150-180g), finely chopped 1 can coconut milk (400ml) 1 can chopped tomatoes (400ml) 1/2 mild chilli finely chopped
Method:
Heat your oil in a saucepan (that has a well fitting lid) on a medium heat and add in your chopped onions. Soften for 5 to 10 minutes and then add in your pasted garlic and ginger as well as your finely chopped chilli – cook out for a minute to lose their raw edge. Next add in all your spices and cook out for a few seconds. Heating spices brings out their flavour. Next add in your chopped sweet potato pieces and chickpeas (or chana dhal) and coat in the spiced onion mix. Then add in the chopped tomatoes and coconut milk. Bring up to the boil and then down to a gentle simmer. Put the lid on and leave to simmer away for 10 minutes, remove the lid and allow the liquid to reduce to produce a thicker consistency. Continue to cook for a further 20 minutes until it has a lovely rich flavour and is a thick curry. If using chana dhal add 10 minutes to your cooking time as you want it to be soft – not chalky or al dente. Th is is delicious with a dollop of natural yoghurt and fresh coriander sprinkled over the top – and you can serve with warm naan bread or pitta bread.
WINTER STAPLES ARE SO BRIGHT BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN VALUABLE PHYTONUTRIENTS, WHICH ARE A COLOURFUL RANGE OF PLANT COMPOUNDS FOUND IN FRUIT AND VEGETABLES.
FOOD
Did you know?
BERRY CRU MBLE
Serves 4-6
3 apples (approximately 330g) 200g mixed frozen berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, gooseberries, redcurrants all work brilliantly) 200g ground almonds 110g cold butter (chopped into small pieces or grated and kept in the fridge hard/cold) 80g light brown muscovado sugar 80g spelt flour 3 tbsp runny honey 1 tsp cornflour Natural or Greek yogurt to serve
Method:
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Simply place your cold chopped butter in a bowl with the ground almonds and flour and rub together with your fingers – do this in a light, quick fashion as you don’t want to warm up the butter too much and make it overly claggy. Rub through until all the butter disappears and resembles breadcrumbs – then stir through the sugar. Place the chopped apples and blackberries into a bowl and mix through the cornflour. Scatter into the ovenproof dish (approx 9 inches by 6 inches) – deep enough for the fruit to come two thirds of the way up. Drizzle the honey over the fruit. Sprinkle the crumble loosely over the top and place in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes, until bubbling around the edges and when tested with a cutlery knife the fruit feels soft and has little resistance. Serve with a generous dollop of natural or Greek yoghurt.
tip
You can always make up individual crumble ramekins, they look gorgeous and will freeze brilliantly before and after cooking.

EMMA-JANE'S TOP TIPS Packing

A toe in the
Founder of Merino label Smalls, Emma-Jane Adam tells us how she raised three ski bunnies My husband and I have always enjoyed
skiing. Our children, aged 10, eight and five, are all far better skiers than I am. When our first child, Max, was born we were out on the slopes with him as soon as we thought possible. Probably way too soon, because we were clueless, over eager, first-time parents. Trying to teach a two year old to ski in plastic skis with scary clowns printed on them is far from advisable. Although, it has to be said, he is quite the demon skier these days. Since then, however, we have become slightly more sensible and have introduced our other children to the slopes at a slightly later age. Ben (eight) began having private lessons when he was three while Grace (five) has never had a private lesson but has learnt in ski school groups from the age of four. We never really did the nursery ski club as the kids always looked miserable, regardless of which country we were in, which always put us off. Everyone has a favorite place to ski and ours is Lech in Austria. It has arguably the best ski school in Europe and is also stunningly beautiful. We’ve been going for nearly 12 years. My husband even dragged us over there when Grace, our youngest, was just nine weeks old. To this day she is still the hotel’s youngest ever guest.

To watch my two boys explore off-piste, in the most breathtaking scenery you can imagine, and hear my daughter Grace’s squeals of delight as she passes me on the slopes and says, chest puffed up with pride, “I’m faster than you mummy” nothing beats that. Snow fights and sitting together at the end of the day, hot chocolate and Sachertorte in hand and big satisfied grins make for some of the most precious memories. LL
• Two pairs of ski mittens are essential because they always get one set wet within 30 seconds of going out in the snow. I say mittens because they are much warmer, you can also add Merino liners for extra warmth. • Base layers – of course our superfine non-itchy Merino Smalls are the perfect moisture wicking base layer for skiing Our kids live in them when we are away (and when they’re not! They even wear them to bed. And they never get smelly, I promise! • I try and pack one t-shirt and one Smalls Merino base layer for every two days and the same for socks – that way you’re not laden down with gear. • In the evenings they don’t need much, even for going out to dinner, but try and take a spare coat for going out at night so the ski one can dry overnight. • Bright coloured ski outfit so they are easy to identify on busy slopes. • Sunscreen.
Other Tips
• Hire your skis the night before as it’s chaos in the morning. • Use the ski schools because the kids can make friends, and there is also a little bit of safety in numbers. • Always try and spend some time skiing with your kiddies, regardless of how painful it is for your lower back. They will be forever grateful and it makes for great memories. Mine now overtake me, and I feel overwhelmed with pride at how good they are, compared to this little Kiwi who didn’t even travel until the age of 18.

THE TRANSITION FROM NURSERY TO BIG ROOM IS A MIGHTY MILESTONE. REBECCA MOORE EXPLORES SOME CLEVER IDEAS TO AID THE BIG MOVE

Wall stickers, glow in the dark stars
and a Care Bear duvet cover. That’s my first memory of my bedroom. And I loved every inch of it because it was mine, that first real sniff at independence. It’s a pivotal point for parents and children when they’ve grown out of their nursery and it’s time to make the big move. Clinical psychologist, and founder of Parent Perspectives, Dr Fin Williams, says: “Moving children from the nursery to a ‘big room’ is really a reflection of us giving children larger space to grow into: physically, emotionally and even socially.” Design expert, and co-founder of child interiors boutique bobo kids, Julie Hamon believes the bedroom is as much for the parent as it is for the child. “The toddler bedroom should become a place where both parents and children can spend time together to read books or play games.” Julie recommends having it in keeping with the rest of the house but simply adding a few
more quirky and vintage items. Julie says: “Children will spend a lot of time in their bedrooms and their taste forms from an early age so it’s important to have a comfortable and appealing bedroom they’ll be happy in.” Nobody can deny the excitement when setting up this new haven for our little ones. It may be a big move emotionally but physically your children will still be rather small. Dr Fin says: “Provide spaces and furniture that are bigger but not too big. This will build your child’s confidence and help them feel comfortable.” We all know those early years zoom by, so it’s worth bearing the future in mind. “Plan ahead so the furniture evolves and you won’t have to replace it regularly,” recommends Julie. “Choose cots that transform into cot-beds/toddler beds which will see the child through until age three to four years.” As scary as it may seem, enjoy creating a space you’ll remember forever. That reminds me, I must dig out that Care Bear duvet.

TOP TIPS FROM BOBO KIDS 1. From the beginning, allow
for ample storage for clothing, toys and books. You can choose stylish storage baskets which are normally used in grown-up spaces to avoid having to replace everything as the child grows up.
94
NOV/DEC 2014
| littlelondonmagazine.co.uk
2. Keep the colour scheme
neutral and then change the accessories, which will keep costs to a minimum. Decorative items like garlands, butterfl ies, wall stickers can be added and then easily removed, as kids like to change their minds.
3. It’s best to opt for dimmable
overhead lighting in a child’s bedroom so that lights can be kept low during the bedtime routine. Strategically placed lamps around the room mean you can always control the level of lighting according to the need.

I was cradling my baby in my arms
after a long and difficult delivery. Sleep, as any new mother in hospital knows, proved elusive as countless people barged in to check me, check baby and offer advice. One jolly woman stopped for a chat to ask: “was this my first?”. When I replied that he was my third son, she replied with a corker. “Hopefully one of them will be gay so you’ll have someone to go shopping with.” I kid you not (though I can only assume her
Occasionally frustrating, it also meant more me-time. As my other half embraced his extra Daddy duties (standing in goal, supervising late-night match viewing and sorting football stickers, I could read, swim, see friends – and wash sweaty football kits. The obsession did not end with the World Cup. It’s a year-round preoccupation, though more so for one than the others. While my middle son will not let a snowstorm affect his game, his brothers are easily distracted
If I'd gone on a month-long cruise during the World Cup, would anyone have noticed? Maybe at mealtimes comment was intended in jest). Since then, friends, relatives and strangers have taken it upon themselves to say how challenging three boys must be and how desperate I must be for some pink in my life. Admittedly, I spent my childhood daydreaming about my future brood. Although I cannot recall the precise details, a pretty girl with plaits and hair ribbons certainly figured in the fantasy. But don’t reach for the tissues just yet. Disappointment and longing do not feature in my life. I have never felt anything other than blessed for having three such healthy, happy, clever, quirky, funny and altogether wonderful sons. My life consists of boys and boyish things, but having grown up with just brothers I was already accustomed to that. There is the small matter of football. If I had embarked on a month-long cruise during the World Cup, would anyone have noticed? Possibly at mealtimes. My complete indifference left me with little to contribute to family conversations during June and July. 98 NOV/DEC 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk
by other pursuits. My eldest is an avid reader who loves to draw, while my little one will drop everything to help with the cooking. Like many same-sex siblings, they share a common ground and generally get on well. But then there’s the shopping thing. My younger two are rarely seen in anything other than jogging bottoms, t-shirts and
trainers. Yet my 11-year-old is as imageconscious as any girl. He must have the right shoes, clothes and accessories before leaving the house, he also quite enjoys shopping. By way of consolation, I am often reminded that boys are more affectionate than girls. Another sweeping generalisation. As the first grandchild on both sides, my eldest was smothered with adoration from birth, so he tended to squirm his way out of hugs and kisses. But his younger brothers were born cuddlers, though things have changed. Middle son restricts his displays of affection to the privacy of home, while my youngest showers me with affection at every opportunity. And their older brother now loves nothing more than bear hugs and emotional heart-to-hearts. As for the teenage years, I am under no illusions. My food bill will double, there may be an air of muskiness and mood swings and monosyllabic conversations will be the order of the day. But who knows what direction life will take us in? How they feel and how they express their emotions has changed and will continue to do so for years to come.

Adam Bradley’s life is the exact mirror opposite of mine. He too is outnumbered – but by five daughters aged between two months and 11 years old. When his wife Keren was most recently expecting, video and audio producer Adam was secretly hoping for another girl. The 39-year-old from north London says: “I had a feeling this one was going to be a boy but deep down I actually wanted another girl because I thought the idea of five daughters was just wonderful. “I got a bit scared about if it was a boy and what I would do. It was fear of the unknown, though it really didn’t matter to us what it would have been.” The Bradleys always knew they wanted a big family – regardless of the gender of their children – so they never chose to find out what they were having each time. “People sometimes look at me with those sad eyes saying, ‘you wanted a boy didn’t you?’ I would have wanted a boy, but only as much as I wanted a girl. A lot of people think we had a fifth because we wanted a boy and think that we would have stopped if our fourth had been a boy – there’s a lot of presumption involved.”
Adam admits that his house is “fairly pink”, though that has never been a problem. He adds, “My wife has always had a much better eye for home decoration than I, so I’m more than happy to live in a flowery house!” Like my sons, the girls have their individual interests and hobbies. None are tomboys, but that’s not to say they are uber-princessy either.
A lot of people think that we had a fifth child because we wanted a boy “Culture is culture and there aren’t any boundaries. We don’t try to gender assign, we just let them choose what they like.” And does that extend to football? As a huge Chelsea fan, Adam had hoped to pass on his passion. He says: “They humour me with the football and they show an interest but I don’t push it. If they ever see something with Chelsea on it they point it out.
“I have taken them to a couple of games, but don’t force them into it as I know that ship has long sailed!” It may sound like a cliché, but in the same way I struggle with football, Adam says there is one thing he gets sick of. “In a word: shopping,” he says. Each girl has her own requirements and everything must always be just so. It’s that procrastination, according to Adam, that gets to him. And when it comes to the looming teenage years, Adam says he is “blissfully ignorant” – for now. “People say girls are easier at first but it changes when the teens come. I keep telling myself my children will be perfect teenagers though,” he laughs. Adam says he imagines himself as a “protector”, “though not standing on my porch with a shotgun.” He adds: “More a shoulder to cry on and to talk and help them understand the way of boys. I’m the only male influence they’ve got on a daily basis. I see myself as taking on an advisory role and picking up the pieces.” So does he have a better understanding of women than my husband, for example? “I get on well with women in general and probably better since having the girls. I think I probably do understand the foibles and nuances of women a little better now.” He hesitates, then laughs: “No… who am I trying to kid? I haven’t got a clue! There’s this side of females that we just don’t get. I’m getting better, but I don’t think I will ever master the art.” But there’s one thing we’re in complete agreement with, we love our kids not for what they are, but who they are – unique and wonderful children who amount to so much more than gender stereotypes. You will listen attentively every evening on the way home and at the table, while eating supper, about all the wonderful shiny, colourful, sparkly things they are making but how they are not allowed to tell you how beautiful their Christmas card is because it is a surprise and you are going to keep it for ever and ever. Now you know what your child has been learning at school you can confidently join in their conversations without looking and sounding silly. And when you go to the Nativity play you will not embarrass your child by giggling out loud at the wrigglers, scratchers, nose-pickers and refusenicks with stage fright. You’ll hold back the laughter when one child, and there’s always one, who is singing (shouting?) louder than all the others so that mummy and daddy can hear them. You will stifl e a guff aw when the innkeeper invites Mary and Joseph into the inn and the teacher has to save the play. And when you leave the school hall you’ll have tears in your eyes – and they’ll not be from laughing. The sincerity when every little voice gently sings Away in a Manger to baby Jesus is very, very special. So dear parents, I wish you a peaceful, fun-fi lled Christmas. Oh, and please do remember to thank the teacher. LL

EDUCATION
How long have you been working at Sydenham High School's Junior School? I took up my post at the start of this academic year. Before this I was Head of Lower School at Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School in West London.
How would you describe the ethos of your school?
We believe in always putting our girls first: their interests, happiness and wellbeing. We encourage every girl to be the best she can be and to reach her full potential. The school is committed to developing the whole girl and not just preparing them for success in their exams.
Does the school have a long history and has it maintained its core values?
Founded in 1887, the school has a long history of educating girls to the highest standards and it has always had a strong vision for offering a broad, and a balanced, curriculum. The school’s commitment to providing a first-class education for girls, ensuring girls understand the value of a good education for its own sake and the importance of consideration for others, remain equally strong today.
How have you found the first few weeks of headship at the Junior School? Although it has only been a few weeks, I have gained so much from joining such a positive and forward-thinking school
MEET THE HEAD We speak with Claire Boyd, the Head of Sydenham High School’s Junior School
community. Coming in as a new head has afforded me the opportunity to tap into the Girls’ Day School Trust network and be part of shaping the future of independent girls’ education.
How do you help ensure every student achieves their full potential?
By getting to know each and every one of our girls inside out. Our staff pride themselves on knowing each girl in their care and tailoring their provision to ensure every girl can be the very best she can be. The combination of a personalised curriculum, wide clubs programme and excellent pastoral care means each girl is able to succeed.
What kind of feedback does the school receive from parents and pupils?
Parents often comment on the confidence our girls exude. A Sydenham High girl knows her own self-worth and is able to build strong relationships with those she meets. In
recent School Council campaign manifestos, many of our girls commented on the how much they enjoy the teaching at Sydenham High. The teachers really listen to their views and opinions, taking them on board and giving them the chance to ask questions and test out their ideas before working together to bring their ideas to life.
Where do you see Sydenham High Junior School in the future?
I see the Junior School building upon its already impressive reputation for providing a first-class education for our girls. By capitalising on the fact that we cover ages four to 18, I look forward to ensuring each girl benefits from a value-added and unbroken educational journey from Early Years through to university. THE LATEST TRENDS IN PHOTOGRAPHY, PARTIES AND MORE
PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTOGRAFACE
We all take a million photos of our
children – thanks, mainly, to the arrival of the smartphone – but having beautiful, professionally taken photos of your offspring must be one of the greatest gifts to yourself, or from another. Valentina of Photograface has made her name capturing newborns and babies but is equally adept at working with older children. “In a way it’s easier with children of a few years because they can understand more than you might think so it’s just a matter of interaction,” says Valentina. “Sometimes it’s about asking for the opposite of what I want: ‘Don’t smile! Don’t look at the camera!’ or challenging them: ‘I bet you can’t do this!’” The photographer always seeks advice from the parents, enquring about the child’s interests: “their favourite TV programmes and characters, books they like, favourite activities… all useful information to have if I do happen to get stuck.” And sometimes the sessions go so well that she really hits it off with her subjects.
104 NOV/DEC 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk
“One of my most recent sessions was with a family in the park. I really had lots of fun. The one-year-old boy was such a smiley baby so we got great images of him, and his four-year-old brother made me run with him pretending to be the racing cars from the Disney movie Cars. My daughter has a passion for Lightning McQueen too so it was easy to join in with him. What’s more, I loved all the images from the session, probably because everyone was so relaxed and was having so much fun. In fact, I bonded so well with the older boy that he invited me to his home for tea! That’s the really rewarding part for me.” One of the trends that’s recently taken off in the UK for children’s photography, and a session that Valentina offers, is ‘Cake Smash’. “It’s particularly fun with toddlers as they know exactly what to do with a cake! It’s messy but worth it – and the photos make great images for party invitations.” LL

Childs Farm products are dermatologically and paediatrician approved
What are your tips for someone considering doing the same?
THE BUSINESS Childs Farm founder Joanna Jensen on juggling work and motherhood
What led you to come up with the idea for Childs Farm?
It came about after I had my two daughters [Mimi, eight and Bella, six]. I had been trying to use fully organic or natural products on both their skin and hair, but found that they didn’t deliver either on the problem of detangling or fragrance. Packaging for quality children’s products also looked quite medicinal, while poor-quality product oozed ‘kid appeal’ but had terrifying content. While staying at a boutique hotel back in 2010, having eyed up their great toiletries for grown ups, I decided it was time kids had great looking, fun but quality products too, which could be used on all skin types, including eczema prone skin.
Has it been plain sailing or a bit of a roller coaster?
An almighty roller coaster, but it’s more second nature now. It’s been the steepest learning curve but the most fun I’ve ever had. There have
114 NOV/DEC 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk
been challenges, but I think life is for living in as big a way as you can cope with – and I think big.
How important are natural and organic products where children are concerned?
Atopic eczema affects one in five children under five now, so parents are much more aware of sensitive skin. Our skin is the largest living organ so it needs to be well treated. Children’s skin is even more delicate, so always patch test anything you use on a child. All our products undergo clinical trials so everything is suitable for eczema prone skin, for newborns and upwards.
You have to have drive, ambition and determination in spades because to make the business work you will have to throw everything into it. You need fantastic support and advice from people in the business too. I have found the results have given me more than I ever thought possible, but it’s incredibly hard work.
Your proudest achievements?
This summer Childs Farm had a trio of successful launches: three of our hero products into Waitrose, seven products into Boots, and the launch of the Childs Farm cartoon on the Cartoonito Channel. The children each have a character named after them in the cartoon – Bella is the dancing goat, and Mimi the motherly mouse. My moments of real pride are when others comment on my children’s beautiful manners and behaviour. Believe me, they can be stinkers at times, but in public they really do me proud, they’re kind, polite and thoughtful and both total individuals.
Any new products in the pipeline?
A nappy cream for happy bottoms is launching soon, as is a new gift pack. We’re currently finalising a number of new lines for 2015, which includes an SPF50 sunscreen.
Have you found it difficult juggling your What’s the first thing you think of in business with a young family? the morning and last thing at night? Juggling a career with being a mum is a real challenge. I try to be really strict; it’s a balancing act of time versus guilt. I was told off for working too much by Mimi the other day, and that really hit home. Once my girls are in bed I do slope back into the office or whip out the laptop in front of The Great British Bake Off!
First thing I think of is how tired I am! I would love a huge fat lie in, but my body clock has me up at 6:30am no matter what. The last thing is why didn’t I shut my bedroom door before the three whippets and cat took over the bed? LL
