EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome

to the very first edition of Little London!

We are super excited about introducing this magazine to the capital’s coolest and smallest. Yup, that’s you – and your family. For us, there has never been a more exciting time for kids in one of the world’s most vibrant capitals and that’s what we aim to reflect. Chef and father to three girls Bill Granger tells us what his favourite mustdos are in My Little London; supermum Noreen Goodwin explains how she juggles eight kids and her charity work in our At Home feature and entrepreneur and glam mama Thea Green of Nails Inc fills us in on the secret of her success in The Business. We look at this season’s snappiest styles and smartest essentials in our Back to School A-Z and our Class Act fashion story, and introduce Leonora Bamford as our Especially Creative Contributing Editor – to give her her official(ish) title. We really hope you enjoy our inaugural issue, and will let us know what you think by emailing us at info@littlelondonmagazine.co.uk Have a great autumn!

ARTIST'S TAIL

Tanya's Original illustrations from 'Short-Tail the Arabian Leopards Incredibly Useful Day'

EVEN BEFORE SCULPTOR TANYA BRETT had her son Leonardo two years ago, she hankered after working on a children’s book. So, when the Sultan of Oman commissioned her to illustrate one – and Julia Gray (nee Johnson, sister of Boris and Rachel) to write it – celebrating the Arabian leopard conservation project, she pounced at the chance. “I liked the idea of a story that was both romantic, in a sense, and educational,” says Brett, “It was great fun sketching to a brief and a storyline and I loved learning about all the other wildlife in the Arabian desert. Unlike my other work I had to be very particular regarding exact markings and physicalities of certain indigenous animals.” Short-Tail the Arabian Leopard’s Incredibly Useful Day is about a big cat who has a beautifully spotty coat and the sharpest claws and teeth, yet is somewhat lacking in the tail department. He manages to come to terms with his differences. Never a bad message. Published in September and also available in Arabic. Stacey International | £6.99

ADVERTORIAL

Legends Learning through

Leading schools in the UK recognise that learning Mandarin is now essential in all walks of life. Textbooks clearly occupy a very important place, but what better way to introduce a nation’s culture to young children than learning through legends. The significance dragons have in Chinese culture, even today, seems strange to Western minds. Like traditional tales everywhere, Chinese legends emphasise the values of courage, friendship, loyalty, wisdom, and love and family. There's a rich procession of fascinating characters, animal and human, amusing or sad, foolish or wise; each book introduces children to an exotic world which they will discover is in fact much like their own. Snowflake Books has a dedicated team of writers and artists. They research authentic Chinese history, wise sayings, and everyday objects, and produce beautiful, original illustrations, which come together in top quality bilingual children’s books. In English and Mandarin, with sentence for sentence bilingual comparison, key words highlighted in both languages, a list of useful words and an audio CD, Snowflake’s books are a pleasurable way for parent and child to read and learn together. Their magical and wise stories can, of course, be read to the youngest child.

THE NEW YEAR BEAST

New Year Beast tells how a fierce monster used to come down from the mountains on New Year’s Eve every year and eat all the people’s food and animals. Then an old man showed the villagers how to use fi re and loud bangs to scare the monster away forever. Just to make sure, the Chinese still greet every New Year with fi recrackers. The Chinese love to celebrate their many festivals such as the Moon Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival.

THE CHILDREN’S PATHWAY TO CHINESE LIFE AND CULTURE

FIVE FLOWER HORSE

Chinese stories often use animal characters to express human qualities. Th is book tells the tale of a horse who wanted to be one of the Emperor’s famous dancing horses. His father meant him to be a war horse, and his friends laughed at him, but by determination and hard work the horse achieved his ambition to be a dancer and win the honour of being a Five Flower Horse.

DAUGHTERS OF THE LAND GOD

A moving story about animal kindness and human prejudice, is that of Little White in Daughters of the Land God. Follow a brave snake who grew so big the villagers became scared and sent her away from her kind friend who cared for her when injured and made her laugh with amusing stories.

Tell us about your children...

We have three daughters, Edie [13], Ines [11] and Bunny [10]. I would say Edie is determined, meticulous and social; Ines is curious, creative and individual and Bunny is nuturing, organised and sensitive.

Which are your favourite local hangouts to take the girls?

Portobello Market – always different, always lively, always something to buy. It is a great hang out for older kids exploring their independence although the East has a big pull too! Hyde Park for early morning weekend walks and the playgrounds for Ines and Bunny. Pizza East for parents and kids get togethers. Nama for Edie who has discovered healthy eating! Westway for rock climbing, and Lisboa on Golborne Road for custard tarts.

Where do you love that's further afield?

What are your three hot tips for London days out with young kids?

On a rainy day, where do you usually end up?

Remember the journey is part of the outing; the parks, parks, parks; and take snacks and refreshments!

Dim sum at Royal China and a movie – at the Electric if we’re lucky.

Edie loves Brick Lane for shopping, bagels and the Lahore Grill. All the girls love Portobello Road especially Honest Burger, Lakwatsa and American Apparel. And Westfield, of course. Our younger girls love it because they can walk around and feel a bit independent.

More galleries but they hate them! We make them find one picture that they like and one that they hate and they need to tell us why.

London is extremely child friendly. There is always so much for the curious to see. For young teenagers it is fantastic, because the public transport gives them an early sense of confidence. For our younger children, we love the parks.

Sunday morning, there’s Tate Modern, followed by a pop into our Clerkenwell restaurant (Granger & Co) Barafina in Soho. The Ace Hotel's Hoi Polloi – surprisingly kid friendly and makes me feel young(er).

DAYS OUT

Before you arrive, it’s worth spending time on the official Legoland website to plan where you want to go and to make a note of the times of the enormously entertaining pirate show and magical Duplo Valley

littlelondonmagazine.co.uk |

SEPT/OCT 2014 41

DAYS OUT

theatre shows of fairytales which utterly entranced my two and had, unlike the original tales, amended endings to ensure they didn’t frighten very little viewers. The Duplo Valley, where the small theatre is located, was probably our favourite zone for children of our age, with large, friendly Duplo figures, several rides suitable for younger visitors, such as the fairytale brook, and a great outdoor play area where families took the opportunity to eat picnic lunches while their children had fun. There is also a great splash area but make sure you have a costume and towel as the water isn’t warm!

The girls were in Lego heaven and loved the princesses and princes peeping out of the 3D wallpaper There are, however, body driers available (at an extra cost) around this and other water rides in the resort, if the sun isn’t shining. Older children will enjoy the two Lego cinemas, including a choice of 4D Lego movies running throughout the day in the Imagination Theatre. Quieter creative areas (where you can choose Lego and Duplo sets to build as well as design racing machines) appealed to bigger kids like my husband. A trip to Legoland isn’t complete of course without a stroll around Miniland, which I have memories of going to when I was young, and the attention to detail in the construction of different cities and miniature Lego figures is breathtaking. We particularly enjoyed finding the smallest constructions: five brick pigeons in mini Trafalgar Square. Obviously the excitement of any theme park can be totally eclipsed by horrendous queue times and if you are not able to visit out of school holidays then it may well be worth considering investing in a Q-Bot for the day. Ranging in price from £15 to £70pp these small hand-held devices do the queuing for you so you can go on another ride and join the Q-Bot lane at the time given on your device to gain instant access. Resting our heads after an eventful and tiring day (do bring a pram and buggy 42 SEPT/OCT 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

board) was made easy thanks to the Resort Hotel: the most child-friendly hotel we’ve ever stayed in. Everything here is themed; from the Lego brick-patterned carpet to the pit of Lego bricks to keep little ones occupied as you check in. The girls loved our Kingdom-themed room, which had a separate bunk bed area for them with their own TV and a safe containing a free Lego gift each and a box of Lego. Needless to say, they were in Lego heaven and loved the princesses and princes peeping out of the 3D wallpaper. The corridor leading to the lifts continued the castle theme as was the case with the Adventure and Pirate floors which we explored in the fab sparkly fairy light lift with the voice of Tree Fu Tom entertaining us as we reached each level. The hotel’s Pirate Splash pool hosts a water seesaw, squirting cannons and a water slide and there’s a smaller lane pool too. This was great to take the girls to before the amazing buffet supper and children’s entertainment in the Bricks family restaurant where they could even colour in the tablecloth. The choice and quality of the food was surprisingly fantastic and we were impressed with the child-height buffet full of children’s favourites with melamine plates and cups in bright colours. There were plenty of salad items available and a refillable range of pure fruit juices rather than sugary squash which made indulging in the great ice cream station, with its marshmallow and chocolate drop toppings, a less guilt-inducing treat. Breakfast was equally impressive and my two-year-old was delighted to find a whole bowl of Babybels at her disposal. The evening entertainment featured Lego brick characters for the children to meet, a magical interactive story and a mini disco. Meanwhile, a bell cord could be pulled to wake up the sleeping Lego ogre in the tower and fairytale steps led up to an Xbox room with a stream of Lego games. It definitely wasn’t an early night but the girls loved it and certainly slept well afterwards. Legoland stands out for how much it is geared towards preschoolers: the lack of teenagers racing through the park was relaxing for little ones and the hotel made it a truly memorable, hassle-free experience. MOVING FROM A COT TO A FIRST BED CAN BE A STRESSFUL TIME FOR ALL INVOLVED. WE’VE ASKED THE EXPERTS AND ROUNDED UP A FEW PRODUCTS TO HELP YOU THROUGH THE TRANSITION

A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP…

Founder of Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic, sleep expert Mandy Gurney, shares her stressfree bedtime tips, with help from family lifestyle website World’s Apart. The transition from a cot to a bed is a positive stage in your child’s life, as it’s a step towards them becoming more independent. Many parents expect the broken night’s sleep to stop after the first six months, but Worlds Apart’s survey has

proved that it actually goes on for much longer than that – well into the toddler and pre-school years. Creating a bedroom environment that is friendly and familiar can overcome sleep difficulties that often occur at this age, as it will help your little one feel secure and snug. A toddler bed will not only feel cosy, but with protective sides it is a safe step towards a big bed, which will prevent your little one from falling out.

WE LOVE...

Oeuf Classic Toddler bed £435, naturalmat.co.uk

TOP TIPS FOR BEDTIME WARM BATH Have a warm relaxing bath lasting no longer than ten minutes. A bath before bed should not be playtime as this could over stimulate your tired child, waking them up again. Go straight from the bathroom into the bedroom – do not go back into the living area, as you will lose the focus of the routine. LIGHTING Dim the lights in the bedroom ready for your return from the bath – this will help with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

STORYTIME Read one or two stories, have

a cuddle and kiss goodnight, then tuck them in with their favourite soft toy so they are warm and cosy.

TIME ALONE Now that they’re drowsy, leave the bedroom so that they learn to fall asleep independently. Your child should be sound asleep about 15 minutes later.

THE BIG MOVE…

Jodi Zervos of Merino Kids advises on a smooth transition from cot to first big bed. The first question is timing. Usually little ones will move from a cot to a bed anytime between one-and-a-half and three-and-a-half years old. If your little one is sleeping well, isn’t trying to escape and hasn’t grown out of their cot, we would suggest you wait until they are showing signs of wanting to move to a big bed. The transition can be an adventure and part of growing up. You will probably find that your first born will be most likely to resist the transition and later children will want to be like their brother or sister. The truth is there is no right answer to the ‘right time’. Listen to your friends, source advice from people you trust and ensure that whatever you do, your child is safe and feels secure in their new bed.

JODI'S TOP TIPS FOR MAKING THE CHANGE 1. Think about where your little one will be sleeping. Will they be changing rooms or staying in the same room? Are there any changes to the room you need to make to ensure it is safe and prevent night-time wanderings?

2. If you are currently using a sleep bag, we would recommend that you carry

46

| littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

on using one as part of the transition process. Along with a favourite cuddly toy, your little one will be taking and using something familiar from cot to bed, so one routine will be maintained while many other changes are happening.

3. Prepare for falls. You can

place the bed against a wall

and buy a guardrail, or alternatively use a duvet or blanket, roll it up and place it down the length of the bed under a fitted sheet to secure it in place.

4. If you are transferring from cot to bed because a sibling is due, make the change a few months before the new baby arrives. You want your

older child to be settled in their new bed before the new baby takes over the cot. Alternatively, you could delay the switch until the new baby is three or four months old.

5. The key is consistency. Set yourself up to succeed and soon everyone will be sleeping well.

You can't stop them growing up, but you can always give them a helping hand. Becky Dickinson shares advice on how to encourage them to go it alone 50 SEPT/OCT 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

It's the great irony of parenting:

from the moment we deliver our babies into the world, our task is to teach them to face it alone. Raising children brings with it the bittersweet paradox of not wanting the little angels to grow up, but not wanting to be doing their washing when they’re 40, either. Newborns arrive dependent upon us for their very survival, but from the moment the umbilical cord is severed, we set them on the path to independence. It’s a long, often bumpy journey to physical separation. Yet by the time our precious creations reach toddlerhood, most are already on their way to mastering many of the skills associated with independence – from feeding themselves (messily) to going to the toilet alone (messier still) and getting themselves dressed (shoes on wrong feet, pants on back-to-front and jumpers inside out). Independence is not something that children can develop alone. It’s a quality we as parents need to nurture, and one that will stay with them for life. For that to happen we need to show love and respect, as well as confidence in our children’s capabilities, to gradually encourage them to meet their own needs, rather than relying on others. Clinical psychologist, Dr Angharad Rudkin, says: “An independent child is someone who is happy to explore and try out new things in a measured, contained way. Having the secure base of their relationship with their parents, where they can check in, gives children the confidence to try new things. “As little ones learn to walk and talk, they have a natural appetite to investigate the world around them. It’s an intense time of new experiences and exploring is the way toddlers learn about themselves, others, and their surroundings.” Exploration plays a key role in helping children develop independence and a sense of self. Dr Rudkin urges parents to promote “guided exploration” – learning together, yet allowing the child to explore and achieve by their own will and abilities. Of course, all exploration has to be age appropriate and young children need to be kept at close range for their own safety. Teaching them that they have a safe, loving place to return to builds their sense

of security. “To help our children become independent, we need to have an awareness of child development so that we know roughly what to expect at each age,” says Dr Rudkin. “However, we need to take this on board along with our awareness of our child. Move at their pace, gently pushing at times if your child is anxious about moving into the next stage.” The toddler stage flies by in a haze of toys, noise, triumphs (and probably more than a few tantrums). No sooner have you packed the highchair away than a new milestone flies into view, with startling

rapidity. Where once you had stair gates to contend with, now you have school gates. Starting full-time education is perhaps the biggest single step your child will take on the road to eventually becoming fully independent. Some children charge past the coat pegs with barely a backwards glance, while others cling sobbing and screaming to the legs of the person dropping them off. Both scenarios can be equally distressing for the parent, still unaccustomed to handing their child over to the care of a virtual stranger, however qualified or experienced

DAYS OUT

that stranger may be. Kate Barlow, founder of The Parent Consultancy, says there are many practical ways parents can help their child become independent enough for school, such as making sure they can use cutlery and get dressed alone, as well as getting them used to being left, either with friends or at a nursery. For children who are particularly anxious, Kate believes tackling the small stuff can make a big difference. She says it’s important to answer any questions your child may have, however trivial they seem, such as “where will I put my coat?” or “where will I eat my lunch?”. Kate also recommends breaking down the day into a sequence of events, as this will make more sense to young minds than using the concept of time. For example, tell them that fi rst Mummy or Daddy will say “bye bye”, then there will be the register, followed by carpet time, playtime, story time and so on, until home time. It may not seem like it when your tights are streaked with snot, but even the clingiest of children will eventually walk into a classroom without bawling, marking a new phase of independence. As children reach ‘middle childhood’ there is a further, more subtle increase in independence as they start to explore the world beyond the safety net of home and school. Simple activities such as going for sleepovers, or posting a letter alone help children test their own capabilities and fi nd a sense of competence and security within themselves. Friends begin to play an increasingly important role in our children’s lives, which some parents fi nd disconcerting. According to Dr Rudkin: “A lot of parents fear their child’s growing independence, seeing it as them [parents] losing control and influence.” But rather than worrying about a loss of authority, we should see this burgeoning independence as “a continuous journey of healthy progression”. Our children will, after all, be reliant on us for emotional, if not physical, support for the rest of our lives. However much we wish we could press pause on the years of play, there is nothing we can do to halt our children’s journeys into adolescence and beyond. Our job is to allow them to develop a healthy sense of independence within loving boundaries. If we do this, we’ll have helped shape happy, robust and well-adjusted adults who can operate in the world by themselves. And that, after all, is what every parent sets out to do. LL

BACK TO SCHOOL

A-Z back to

school

Our essential checklist for your little one’s early years in the classroom...

IS FOR CLASSROOM.

IS FOR APPLE.

Obviously an academic essential. It is also, conveniently, the shape of this wonderful teacher’s rules hanging plaque (£8.99, borngifted.co.uk). This multi-purpose sign serves as a sweet introduction to school life for new-starters as well as an original gift for an extraspecial teacher.

IS FOR BOOK.

Those apprehensive about their first day might like Lauren Child’s I Am Too Absolutely Small for School (£6.99, Orchard) because, after all, we’ve all felt too absolutely small at one point.

For a child starting school for the first time it’s important for them to get a sense of their new environment. A pre-school trip is often a great idea and can normally be arranged with the school.

IS FOR EDUCATION.

IS FOR DANCING!

Photo: Getty

Extra curricular activities are the key to a broad education. For any budding ballerinas, we love Trotters’ adorable range of tutus, leotards and dance shoes and wish we were small enough to fit into them (Tutu £29.99, Ballet shoes £12.99, trotters.co.uk).

See our education consultant William Stadlen (overleaf) on choosing the right first school for your Little Londoner.

IS FOR GAMES.

IS FOR FRIENDS.

Socialising is one of the most important lessons a child will learn at school.

School may be serious but play is still one of the most useful facets of your child’s life. Make sure there is always time for fun! We love this chess game (£26, bobokids.co.uk). littlelondonmagazine.co.uk |

SEPT/OCT 2014 57

IS FOR HAIRCUTS. So ubiquitous are Trotters haircuts with the back to school rush that there are actually hairdressers working there who fondly remember their own Trotters school haircut. And, with the launch of their new hairdressing loyalty card, there’s never been a better time to book that all-important back to school cut! Parents start scrambling for a coveted seat in front of Trotters’ famous tropical aquariums – all of which feature a sucker fish called George – as early as August. Ranging in price from £13 to £16, a Trotters haircut is a special experience, with each child given a Dunwoody chocolate coin and celebratory sticker. There’s also good news for patient siblings tagging along as Trotters hairdresser Joanne Sharp let us in on a secret – they may be in for a chocolate coin too! IS FOR KICK ABOUT.

IS FOR IMAGINATION.

Creative writing and play are a great means of broadening and strengthening your child’s education.

IS FOR LUNCH.

We love Graze’s new range of boxes for kids, complete with puzzles to keep them entertained as well as tasty and nutritious snacks (graze.com).

IS FOR ORGANISATION.

This is less of a chore with great desktop accessories and study aids. We love Post-It’s cute cat-shaped note dispenser (£7.72 post-it.com).

58 SEPT/OCT 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

IS FOR JOTTERS.

Getting your children into the habit of carrying a notebook and writing is the best means of improving their spelling in this age of spellcheck and autocorrect. Why not treat older kids to a beautiful leather notebook from Smythson? (£65, smythson.com).

IS FOR MATHS. Help make

numbers approachable from an early age for your Little Londoner by encouraging basic maths in everyday life outside school. Try this great ‘ See Inside Maths’ book (£9.99, gltc.co.uk).

After a summer of World Cup excitement, show off your sportiness and exercise in the new school year with your active Little Londoners.

IS FOR NAMES.

‘If you forget your name it’s sewn on somewhere’ is a great truism for early school years. Keep belongings from getting lost at tinyme.co.uk with a great range of sticky and iron-on name labels.

IS FOR QUESTIONS.

IS FOR PENCIL CASE. For children in a uniformed school, a pencil case can be a rare opportunity for a dash of personality. The Mr Men pencil cases from John Lewis are our favourites (£7.99, johnlewis.com).

Early years are the most important time for children to indulge their curiosity. Encourage your child to ask questions about the world around them and to always ask their teacher if they don’t understand.

BACK TO SCHOOL

IS FOR RUCKSACKS.

For stylish school packing we love Miniséri’s Ambition satchel (£79.50, en.smallable.com).

IS FOR TEACHER.

IS FOR SHOES.

Kids will put their best foot forward in Trotters’ fabulous range of back to school shoes. Our favourites are Hampton’s Harvard high shine loafers (£54.99) and these George and Katie classics (£49.99, trotters.co.uk).

IS FOR VROOOOM!

Buck the scooter trend with some good old-fashioned cycling. This Apollo Cherry Lane bike (£89.99, halfords.com) will make the school run a treat. But don’t forget your helmets!

IS FOR UNIFORM.

Whether it’s strictly blazers and caps or smart casual, it’s good to make sure your little one is always school style savvy.

IS FOR XYLOPHONE.

What a great way to introduce your children to music and also, frankly, one of the only words beginning with x.

IS FOR YOU!

Parents play a key role in any child’s education, especially at such a young age. Keep up with your child’s learning and always be ready to help.

Building a good relationship and line of communication with the class teacher is the best way of keeping informed about your child’s progress.

IS FOR WARM.

School heralds the beginning of colder weather. Keep your kiddies as stylish as they are snug in Ver de Terre’s Eskimo Down Coat (£143, iglookids.co.uk).

IS FOR ZZZZZZZ.

After a long day at school make sure your Little Londoners get a good night’s sleep!

FINDING THE PERFECT SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD It is never too early to start planning for your child’s education. The best private schools require registration years in advance. The School’s Academic Reputation This can be determined by a combination of the school’s grade averages, the curriculum followed, the range of subjects offered, and whether that school has any particular reputation or provisions for certain subjects. Your child might suit the broader International Baccalaureate curriculum more than the traditional English style (including GCSEs, AS and A-Levels).

Inputs and Outputs Certain pre-prep schools tend to welcome applications from particular nurseries, which is then continued up the chain to prep school, secondary school and even to university. Your choice of pre-prep or prep school, while seemingly innocuous, will have long-lasting ramifications. Extra-Curricular Concerns and Ethos If your child has a particular aptitude for a certain extra-curricular pursuit then you should ensure that your chosen school caters sufficiently for that. More practical issues such as the school’s location and whether

the school is single-sex or co-educational are equally vital to consider, and even more important if you will need to incorporate the education of a younger sister or brother in the future. Private Education as an Investment Private school fees in the UK can be extremely expensive. It is vital, then, that this investment is considered carefully and planned for well in advance. William Stadlen is Managing Director at Holland Park Tuition & Education Consultants.

COOL MUMS

Wonder woman Noreen Goodwin, philanthropist and clean-living mother of eight, tells Lisa Carter what makes her mad and what keeps her sane

littlelondonmagazine.co.uk |

SEPT/OCT 2014 05

I arrive at Noreen’s house 10 minutes

early, but decide to wait in the car so as not to disturb what I presume is her hectic schedule. This, after all, is a woman with eight children. How can life not be hectic? But Noreen, looking immaculate in a brown-and-white belted shirt-dress (from Zara she tells me later), comes out, spots me and in her warm, effusive ways tells me to come straight in. Inside – which is far tidier and polished than it has any right to be – we sit and chat at the breakfast bar and, when offered a drink, I am presented with a little white porcelain tray bearing a glass and a miniature bottle of Evian. I also get to peek inside her store cupboard and fridge, both full of the healthiest foods I have ever seen. Noreen jokingly admits to having a few OCD issues. 70 SEPT/OCT 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

One of five children born to Pakistani parents, Noreen grew up in the Midlands, “Dad never lets us forget he came over with no money in 1961 and worked like crazy to give us the life we had.” She met her husband Tony – who owns a successful recruitment company – briefly, during a night out in London, but it wasn’t until a few years later, when Noreen was working for an Asian TV channel, that they got together. Noreen thinks her decision to have lots of children stems from her happy childhood surrounded by her four brothers, where her mother was the pillar of the family. Her passion for healthy eating and exercise, she says, is what has kept her balanced through all the stages of having her children, who were all born on the NHS, rather than

privately: “Why would you pay for the most natural thing in the world?” She casually runs through what her various offspring are up to: “Aysha [16] is in the park with friends playing with a new puppy – not ours. Amirah [15] and Adnaan [13] are at Camp Montana in Switzerland. Adeel [12] is listening to music in his room. Amaan [9] is in the country playing golf with Amir [8], and Aliyah [6] and Alina [3] are also in the country painting their Wendy house.” I comment on how she’s even managed to balance the number of girls and boys. “I know,” she laughs, “it worked out well for someone with OCD. I just had to have an even number!” Outside of running such a big family, Noreen and Tony see themselves as hugely fortunate and both feel it makes sense to do as much as they can for others who are less so. Tony is a benefactor of The Duke of Edinburgh scheme and they are both involved in Regenerate, a charity which helps youths on the Roehampton Estate with rehabilitation and aims to keep children out of trouble by encouraging them to be a part of the community.

COOL MUMS

Bedtime stories are important family time

Noreen feels particularly strongly about the role women’s charities have to play today, “Women within the media should have a much stronger voice,” she complains. However Angelina Jolie and William Hague teaming up for the abolition of sexual violence within war was a positive step, she feels. “Women are the ones who nurture their children and keep family units together, for the most part. It would make so much sense for more women to be making the really big decisions.” Noreen makes no secret of her love of fashion and the pride she takes in keeping trim. She has more confidence now, she says, than she did in her twenties and wishes everyone felt the same way. She worries that women don’t take enough care of themselves in our pressurised, competitive society, and that we should offer more support to each other. “I’d much rather be complimented by a women than wolf-whistled by a man,” she smiles. LEONORA BAMFORD

An authority on all things mama-related, and never without a few tricks up each sleeve, mybaba.com founder Leonora Bamford is particularly well-versed when it comes to keeping kiddie’s minds stimulated and little hands busy. Here, in the fi rst installment of her new column, she offers a little creative inspiration for the autumn months ahead.

LEONORA BAMFORD SHARES HER TOP TIPS FOR STAYING CREATIVE AT HOME AND OUTDOORS THIS AUTUMN

THE BIG DRAW Th is arty event is something I really want to get involved with this year. Running throughout October, with 280,000 people expected to join in over 1,000 events, this is bound to be a corker. They offer mainly free drawing activities, which connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, illustrators and, of course, each other. Perfect for those who love to draw – and those who think that they can’t.

STICK INSECT

This summer we bought a live butterfly kit, and it was so much fun. This autumn, we're going to give the stick insect kit a go. A great 'first pet' idea. You raise the insects from a tiny egg, and when they hatch (this can take up to two months), your little ones have to feed them leaves or ivy and watch them grow.

NATURE TABLE The Chelsea Physic Garden is a personal favourite of mine, and there's always so much to see. Every month they hold walks, talks and workshops for all ages. My two are particularly interested in 'Chocolate Tuesday' and 'Creepy Crawling' this year.

A cardboard box playhouse is a simple way to play and an inspired recycling idea...

YOU WILL NEED

Paint or spray paint

Felt pens

Leaves Googly eyes Fishing wire

HOW TO MAKE This has got to be the simplest way to decorate doorways, halls and mantelpieces to welcome little trick-or-treaters at the spookiest time of the year. Find a nice selection of leaves that have fallen from trees and dry in an airing cupboard, or other warm place, over night. They should be slightly crisp in the morning. Paint or spray the leaves white and leave to dry for 20 minutes before drawing eyes and a big ghoulish mouth using a black felt pen. I also like using googly eyes (found in craft shops). Using fishing wire, hang the leaves from their stalks so they appear to flutter and float on ther own. A great one for all ages.

LITTLE GREEN FINGERS

One of my favourite things to do as a child was what my mother called a nature trail. We would wander the garden, or local woodland, with a basket each and collect anything that looked interesting. When we got home, we laid our treasures out on the table ready to separate, draw or start a collection.

EAT WELL

"Daylesford has always had children in mind, from the summer and harvest festivals to its cookery schools"

real fast food Since opening their first London ‘farm shop’ on Pimlico Road in 2007, Daylesford Organic has been bringing a taste of Gloucestershire goodness to a loyal and very eager market in the capital. So it was really only a matter of time before they created something specifically for mini foodies. Founder Carole Bamford was originally inspired to start the company when she had her children and struggled to find good, organic food for the family. She has been farming organically for over 30 years – so

knows her stuff – and, for her latest line of products, brought her daughter-in-law Leonora on board to test them out. The Mini Meals range, which launches in September, is Daylesford’s new selection of dishes for children from four to six years old. “It was so much fun tasting the range,” says mybaba.com founder Leonora. “I invited a group of my children's friends over for tea and we went through them all, pencils in hand. It was hard to pick out favourites but my son went mad for the meatballs and my daughter loved the

creamy chicken casserole. There were a lot of clean plates! The meals that were decided upon, are now made in small batches in Gloucestershire and come in colourful, cartoon-like pouches designed by artist Hugo Guinness. “Parents are under so much pressure these days,” says Leonora, “and to be able to buy a fresh, healthy, organic meal that you know can be on the table for your children within minutes is pretty great. Daylesford has always had children in mind, from the summer and harvest festivals held at the farm to the cookery schools, there is always something for little ones to learn and enjoy. My son has been so inspired by it all he says he wants to be a farmer when he grows up,” she laughs.

SAFARI

travel

Alice Callander, of bespoke luxury travel company Sally and Alice, gives us the low-down on family safaris… A safari is unlike any other family

holiday – you can unplug, regroup, immerse yourselves in wilderness and share an adventure with your children that will create lifelong memories and undoubtedly a passion for nature. A good safari will tap into the senses of all ages – and yes, that includes essential downtime for parents. While your little ones are off following giraffe dung with a qualified guide, you can be feet up, face down in the bush spa. There are, however, a few things to consider to ensure that a safari is a happy family experience. While we generally recommend safari holidays for children from the age of five upwards, safari is something that can be enjoyed from a very early age – just being close to the bush is a great experience for small ones. For very young children the main issue to consider when taking a safari is health, therefore we tend to recommend the non-malarial areas of South Africa as a great starting point for first time safarigoers. In the Waterberg Mountains, Ant’s Nest is set on a small game reserve within driving distance from Johannesburg. This is not the place to see the ‘Big Five’ (there are no elephants or lions) but rather an intimate owner-run lodge that specialises in safari activities for the whole family and riding for experts and beginners. We would also suggest, where possible, that families book an exclusive villa or bush home for a tailor-made experience, child-friendly menus, flexible eating times and private

4x4 for game drives that fit your daily routine – Kwandwe in the Eastern Cape offers Melton Manor and Uplands Homestead, while up north in the Madikwe Game Reserve, Morukuru is especially designed with kids in mind, consisting of two separate mini lodges with two and three bedrooms. From the age of five years onwards, kids are more able to take anti-malarials and so families might also

Safaris cater for all ages

consider safari in Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia or Botswana – although you still need to make sure the lodges are child-friendly and ideally reserve a private vehicle for your family. Most safari camps accept children of this age, although there are some which start at eight years and a few which start at 12 years, with some activities not permitted. For families looking for something a bit more adventurous, we recommend the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. Sand Rivers Selous welcomes children from the age of eight and upwards and in addition to the standard 4x4 game drives you can also do boat safaris and fishing – which is great fun for the whole family, with hippos and crocodiles spectating from the opposite riverbank! In Zambia, both the South Luangwa Valley and Lower Zambezi National Park offer superb game viewing and wonderful accommodation and activities for families travelling with older children – and time here can be combined with a few days in the Livingstone area visiting the magnificent Victoria Falls. Families staying at Potato Bush Camp in the Lower Zambezi have the mighty Zambezi River as their playground, with fishing, canoeing and river safaris on offer to complement the land-based safari activities. The choice is yours, so go wild! Are you ready for a safari adventure? Contact: Sally and Alice Travel Co. sallyandalice.com | home@sallyandalice.com

try and show you that by putting a little bit of thought into the ingredients you put on your families’ plates, you can provide nourishing meals which are also quick and delicious. A simple way to start doing this is by building up your store cupboard with ingredients that have great nutritional properties. Having these staples to hand will help make it easier for you to use them therapeutically, rather than having to turn to your medicine cupboard. As the summer holidays draw to a close, we wanted to focus on energy-boosting ingredients which will help your children settle back into the demanding autumn school schedule.

PULSES AND BEANS

These are rich in fibre and valuable vitamins and minerals, such as iron, which is a key nutrient to support energy levels during the day.

OATS

A fantastic source of both gentle soluble fibre and energy supporting B vitamins. They make a fantastic breakfast and are easy on the digestive system.

CHICKEN SATAY

2 chicken breasts – cut into long slithers 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric 1 onion grated or finely chopped 1 tbsp unrefined sugar, maple or honey 8 wooden skewers

Method:

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place your chicken pieces into a bowl or plastic bag and add in all the spices, onion and sugar and massage into the meat – for a stronger flavour leave for at least 30 minutes or in the fridge over night. Lightly oil a baking sheet and place in the oven about 5 minutes before using. Take your marinated meat and weave onto your skewers. Place onto your preheated baking sheet and cook for 5 minutes, then turn and cook for another 5 minutes. They should take on a golden brown colour. Check the meat is cooked all the way through.

PEANUT DIPPING SAUCE

Method:

GREEN RICE

Method:

160g crunchy peanut butter 60ml Maple syrup 20ml white wine vinegar A splash of water Place all the ingredients into a small saucepan, put on a gentle heat and stir. It will become thicker as it warms however if you want it to be a touch runnier just add a splash of water. You can prepare this in advance and keep in an airtight container up to a couple of days. Best served warm.

Serves 4

300ml stock 150g brown rice 1 clove garlic sliced 1 tbsp oil (such as rapeseed or coconut) 3 cardamom pods lightly crushed 85g leafy greens – such as kale, spinach, cabbage – very finely chopped A knob of butter Rinse the rice. Chop your greens and add to the stock – take a hand blender and blitz until liquid. Gently heat some oil in a saucepan, add the sliced garlic and cook for a few seconds. Add the rice and coat in the oil and garlic. Cover with your green stock and throw in your cardamom pods and mix. Bring up to the boil and then down to a gentle simmer and place your lid on top. Cook for 20-25 minutes until soft and all the stock has evaporated.

60g hazelnuts 60g almonds 40g sunflower seeds 40g sesame seeds 40g pumpkin seeds 80g apricot 80g figs 120g oats 120g smooth peanut butter 120g honey 120g pitted dates 30 ml (2 tbsps) water

Method:

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Firstly place your dates into a small bowl and cover with the water. Place in the microwave for 1 minute to soften. If you don’t have a microwave you can do this in a saucepan. Then purée the dates with a hand blender or using the back of a wooden spoon to squash down to a paste. Place your nuts and seeds in a bowl or plastic food bag and bash with a rolling pin to break them down slightly. Mix in your oats and then pour this all into a roasting tin and roast for 10-15 minutes until the nuts have browned and the oats are lightly toasted. Chop up your figs and apricots. In a saucepan add your honey, peanut butter and dates and stir all together until a soft paste. Mix everything together. Turn out into a roasting tray lined with non-stick baking parchment until a few cm deep and place in the fridge to set. Cut into small squares and enjoy!

tip

Toasted nuts can be used to jazz up food and make a great snack to have on-the-go. Don’t underestimate how much children like seeds and nuts!

unconditionally, but when it comes to pushing your buttons they can be worldclass professionals. All too often our natural reaction is to get angry and shout. But how helpful are we being as parents? A recent study carried out by the London School of Economics revealed that excessive shouting and tough punishments can be counterproductive. Researchers claimed that ignoring children also creates tension. The study showed that “particularly excessive shouting, punishing or ignoring a naughty child” increases behavioural problems, adding: “Only reasoning does not impact the child’s behaviour”. I grew up in a loud and noisy household. My father had a fiery Mediterranean temperament with a short fuse; my mother is

a trained opera singer with the power to project to packed auditoriums. Daily dramas played out at full volume, often involving us three children. People can replicate their upbringing in their parenting, but this is one aspect I consciously try to avoid. That’s not to say I never raise my voice, as my three sons will surely testify. Yet when I do, they inevitably burst into heart-wrenching crying fits – so upset are they by my screams. Everyone loses their cool from time to time, it’s a natural reaction. However, one study by psychiatrists at Harvard Medical School found that shouting at children can significantly and permanently alter the structure of their brains. Psychologists at Plymouth University also report that being shouted at stresses children, which can cause biological changes. Obvious really. Parent counsellor Rosalie Ajzensztejn runs group and private sessions on raising children. One popular talk is entitled: ‘More Cooperation, Less Shouting’. “A lot of what I share is common sense,” says Rosalie, a mother-of-four and a grandmother. She explains: “Shouting wears

us down, builds resentment and tends to go around in a cycle. It is a natural reaction but has the reverse effect. We want to get back to appreciating our children and not being harassed by them. “You feel awful when you go to bed and all you can remember about your day is shouting at your children. It doesn’t feel good for you or them.” Instead, Rosalie aims to furnish parents with a ‘toolkit of skills’ to adopt before reacting to the red flag. “Parenting comes without any rules or training,” she says. Part of the problem, according to Rosalie, is that we give our children mixed messages. We excessively praise them, she says, then lose our cool when things go wrong. For this reason, the former teacher and children’s writer strongly recommends that parents engage in ‘descriptive praise’. “When you attack someone, everyone feels unhappy with themselves. If you notice the positive things people do, you make them feel respected. “The praise should be specific so that your child knows exactly what they are doing right, and they can repeat it,” says Rosalie. For example, if your son or daughter hangs up their towel after a bath, praise them for it. Acknowledge the small things, like putting away their shoes or sharing with siblings. Rosalie says, “You get cross when you feel they don’t meet your expectations, which is why it’s important to be specific. It makes children want to be cooperative because they are actually keen to do the right thing.” So is there ever a time or a place for shouting at your child?

* For more information on the NSPCC and its work visit nspcc.org.uk

“I’m not asking for total perfection and I’m not saying you can’t have the occasional row,” says Rosalie. “Obviously if your child is in immediate danger you just do what it takes to make them safe. So you’ll probably shout.” But in less dramatic situations, tension can be diffused with ‘reflective listening’. Rosalie explains, “We tend to deny children their feelings because it hurts us. We try to fix things by saying we will have a word with their teacher, or something like that, when really we should allow them to find their own solutions.” If your child gets upset because someone else has broken their toy, recognise their feelings – but do not step in, says Rosalie. She adds: “Say something like: ‘what a shame you were playing so nicely and the child broke your toy’. “Often that’s enough,” says Rosalie. “It’s a bit like Pilates – one tiny movement is powerful. As a result your child feels that you have understood them and are on their side.” If the issue persists, ask your child how they think they might handle the situation. By not fixing or denying their feelings we are supporting them to find their own solutions, which in time makes them more resourceful, selfreliant and confident.” Good advice if you’re dealing with a level-headed

eight-year-old but not so straightforward if your toddler is throwing a tantrum in Tesco. At this point, says Rosalie, don’t waste your time as your child probably won’t hear you. Instead, she offers, “If you don’t know what to do there and then, just don’t respond. Count to 100 or take a deep breath, but don’t react, because reacting angrily just creates a cycle. “When things quieten down later say something like: ‘when you were so cross in Tesco what could you have done instead of shouting or hitting?’ “Little by little you teach your child to find their own solutions,” says Rosalie, explaining that this method will initially feel counter-intuitive. “It’s an ongoing process but you’ll see improvements almost immediately, which support you to use the skills consistently. “Over time your child will learn that there are other solutions and because you are calmer it reduces their anxiety.” LL

HOW TO CHOOSE? Figuring out which pet is for you and your existing little brood is depend ent, firstly, on how much time you can give to your new animal. A more low maintenan ce animal is usually smaller: hamsters, gerb ils and mice, or scalier: goldfish are the lazy pet owner’s best friend. Factor in all the extras involved – vet bills, toys, grooming, food – and , of course, ask yourself how involved or eager your child is likely to be. Caring for a pet is a brilliant exercise in responsibility but, no matter how keen your Little Londoner may be, assume that you may be doing most, if not all, of the work.

GERB ILS, HAMSTERS AN D MICE

The classic choices for a first pet: small, furr y, cute as a button and with cag e maintenance that teaches children respons ibility. All three are social, cuddly and good tem pered, though remember hamsters are typical ly nocturnal creatures. Prepare your childre n to be gentle with these small animals, who are often agile and wriggly – and be on your guard as these creatures are all excellent esca pe artists who can gnaw their way out of alm ost anything. I once found my hamster non chalantly walking across our mantelpiece , two rooms away from his cage.

BIRDS

These are not the best starter pets for small children. Most are easily scar ed – not being fans of sudden movement or unexpected noises. They need regular clea ning, fresh food and a cage big enough for flying . They are best suited to older children or calm er, younger children with a decided interest in owning a bird.

LIZ ARDS

Lizards can be a great (low maintenance) pet for children still in the din osaur enthusiast stage but they com e with a lot of problems. Lizards are not reco mmended for children below the age of five as many come

EDUCATION

How long have you been at Woodcote House School?

I joined Woodcote in 2003 and I have been the Headmaster since 2009.

What is the ethos at Woodcote House School?

Woodcote is a family owned business, having belonged to the Paterson family since 1931. It is a school of 105 boys with an average class size of 10. Being such a small school, this leads to a sense of familiarity and belonging. The relationship between the boys and the staff is key. We ensure that all the boys at Woodcote are involved in everything that goes on in the school – Sport, Music, Art, Drama, etc. Woodcote is situated in 35 acres and is a place where ‘boys can still be boys’.

What is the history of the Surrey-based prep school? Woodcote started life as a coaching inn called The Pelican, on the old London to Portsmouth Road. In the early 19th century it became a lodging house for young military cadets. It was founded as a prep school in 1854.

We hear that you offer a bus service from London. Can you tell us more about its benefits?

In April of this year we began running a daily bus service from Tibbet’s Corner in Putney, due to demand from London-based parents. The bus leaves London at 7.30am each morning and returns at 6.30pm each evening. It may seem a long day, but

MEET THE HEAD We speak with Henry Knight, the Headmaster at Woodcote House School

during that time the boys will have done all their academic and music lessons, drama, art, hobbies, sports and ‘prep’ (homework). When the boys return to London, school is over and family time begins – so no late night homework battles!

How do you help ensure every student achieves their full potential?

We work with each family to offer a ‘graduated approach’ to boarding for when their son is ready. Some choose to board for a couple of nights, some become full boarders and others remain as day pupils. With a small school, everyone is noticed and involved, so every boy at Woodcote is an integral part of the school. No one gets lost in the system, and by following a ‘boarding timetable’, there is plenty of time for either consolidation or extension. We get to know the boys very quickly and are therefore well-placed to advise parents on the right senior schools for their sons. We have a 100% success rate at Common Entrance and win scholarships to some of the top public schools every year.

What have you gained from working at Woodcote House School? It is a fabulous place to work. There is a wonderful sense of ‘family’ around the place, not only as a result of being ‘proprietorial’ but also because of the staff and their families who live on site. From a personal point of view, because we are a small school, I get to know both the boys and their families very well.

Where do you see Woodcote House School in the future?

The daily bus service means even more London-based parents are choosing Woodcote. We can take the boys out of London on a daily basis from Year Three and, with our graduated approach to boarding, hope that they will become part-time and eventually full-time boarders, in preparation for their entry into public school. WE SPEAK WITH THE EDUCATIONAL TOY SPECIALIST FROM ORCHARD TOYS, CHARLOTTE BEEVOR, AS SHE SHARES HER TIPS ON MAKING THE MOST OF LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Passionate about their work for the early years, Charlotte and her team at Orchard Toys work with a wide range of educational advisors including teachers, early years professionals, parents and children. They pride themselves on producing games, puzzles and activities that are lively, fun and appealing, while enhancing children's learning and educational development. “Learning at an early age provides the building blocks for further experience, so it’s essential that we help children build a firm foundation,” explains Charlotte Beevor, “At such a young age there is so much to learn and we can use our everyday environment to enhance learning.”

ONE, TWO, THREE...

A SPLASH OF COLOUR

Colour is all around us and by regularly pointing out different colours to your child you will help them begin to recognise them. When you’re dressing your child in the morning, talk to them about the colour of their socks. Orchard Toys’ Post Box game is a fun one to play as it helps teach colour recognition. Suitable for children from age two it involves posting letters into the correct coloured post boxes.

Counting can become part of everyday life teaching. Ask your child how many pieces of food they have on their plate, moving onto more complex questions as they get older, such as: “How many plates do we need for dinner?”.

LETTERS AND WORDS

Reading is about matching shapes and patterns to make a word, jigsaws are a way of starting this process. The more jigsaws you do with your child, the more they will learn about putting things together and they will move on to words. Orchard Toys has a wide range of puzzles, from chunky two-piece puzzles from 18 months plus, to 150 piece puzzles.

SHIP SHAPE

Shapes are everywhere we look, so point out the shapes you see around you – a round plate, a square table. Children quickly learn a circle but often find triangles more difficult, as we see more circles in our daily lives. Pirate Shapes game can be played as a fun activity where children enjoy slotting the shapes into the right space.

ACTIVITIES

Butt Darts:

Place a mug on the ground and choose a start line five big steps away from it. The fi rst player clenches the coin between their butt cheeks (with clothes on!) and carefully waddles towards the mug. They take careful aim over the mug and release. If you miss unfortunately you are out until the next game. If you score a hit you are into round two and you have to try with two coins. Round three is with three coins and so on.

Brilliant Egg Trick:

You will need: 1 large water glass 1 outside sleeve of a small matchbox 1 small biscuit tin lid (or a small baking tray) 1 or maybe 2 (just in case) raw eggs 1 broom stick or mop Some water - Fill the glass almost full of water - Put the glass right next to the edge of a table - Then place the biscuit tin lid centrally upside down on top of the glass of water - Put the matchbox sleeve standing on its end on the tin lid directly above the middle of the glass - Balance the egg on top of the matchbox sleeve - Put the head of the broom, or mop, on the floor underneath the glass - Hold the top of the broom stick and sharply shove it forwards so it hits the edge of the biscuit tin lid pretty hard. - If all goes to plan, the lid should slide forwards, the match box sleeve should hold the egg in the air for a second and next the egg should plop safely into the glass of water without breaking!

Crazy Golf:

If you can’t go to the golf course, bring the golf course to you. You need a putter, a golf ball and 18 plastic cups. If you don’t have golfing equipment try a ping pong ball, tennis ball or even a marble if you want to play mini mini golf. The ‘club’ can be a broom, a cricket bat or even a ruler if you are playing with the marble. Set up a crazy golf course using the stairs, bounce off walls, make tunnels and bridges using tables, chairs, the dog…

Duvet Tobogganing:

Grab the thickest duvet you can find and sit on the end of the duvet at the top of some carpeted stairs, wrapping your legs with the rest of duvet so it feels like you are in a sleeping bag. Send yourself down the stairs feet fi rst. Open your eyes again before you go down!

Babybel World Cup: Each player needs to take a Babybel cheese, eat the cheese (very important), and keep the two red waxy halves of the wrapper to make them into Babybel football boots on your fingers. Make a ball from the wax from another Babybel. You can use mugs for goalposts. Then it’s time for kick-off ! 104 SEPT/OCT 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

DAYS OUT

Nanny

drive Frustrated by how slow the large lorry

in front of me is driving, I attempt to overtake nearly causing a major accident. Fortunately this is not real life as I am sitting behind my computer at home engrossed in a new software development that teaches the skills and hazards of driving. Having passed my driving test 25 years ago I am relieved to say I have a clean license

speed limits on certain roads, motorway driving and what certain road markings meant. It will indicate if you answer correctly and when you don’t it supplies you with the correct answer in a detailed and informative way. For me, the most impressive part is the skills section that takes you through a number of video clips designed like real

According to the programme 95% of all crashes are contributed to by attitude and behaviour but ask me anything from the Highway Code and I’ve probably forgotten half of it. This is all the more obvious when I take part in Nanny Drive iQ – the world’s first online assessment and educational platform that teaches the vital skills and awareness of driving. It is a clever programme aimed at nannies – designed to reassure an employer that they have taken their driving to an advanced and tested level and can be entrusted to drive children. It took me about 40 minutes to complete the initial Nanny Drive iQ assessment. However, depending on the outcome you then go on to complete the e-learning platform of up to 20 compulsory or recommended modules. I am ashamed to say I failed on a number of points. The programme asked me a wide range of questions related to my driving including the knowledge I had, my attitude to driving and the skills involved. Questions covered 108 SEPT/OCT 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

life scenarios with you behind the wheel of the car. This is where I learnt that my attempt to overtake a large vehicle would result in a car crash and that speeding down a country lane is incredibly unprofessional. According to the Nanny Drive iQ programme: “95% of all crashes are

contributed to by attitude and behaviour, not how technically well we drive a car. “It’s our human factors – things like distraction, mood, anxiety, fatigue, a lack of planning or concentration that put a usually competent and careful driver (and their passengers) in danger. “Recent research has highlighted that children are 12 times more likely to be a distraction to drivers than using a mobile phone at the wheel.” With three boisterous kids, I am fully aware that this much is true. Would I ask my child-minder to take this course? It would definitely make me feel more confident that they had this extra knowledge under their belt. However, I think it would also work well as a “refreshers” course for all drivers with children. I certainly learnt a lot... LL The Nanny Drive iQ programme costs £60. nannydriveiq.com

NAILS INC'S NAIL KALE RANGE WITH THEIR NEW FACE ALEXA CHUNG

What would your advice be for someone with a young family considering starting their own business?

THE BUSINESS Nails inc founder Thea Green on juggling work and motherhood

How did you come up with the idea for your company nails inc? I joined Tatler, became fashion editor at 23 and made frequent visits to New York. It was then that I saw that women everywhere were having regular manicures. It was a fast, affordable everyday luxury that still wasn’t available in the UK and I spotted my business opportunity.

How would this be different?

I wanted to provide a luxurious customer experience using own brand professional quality products that people could also buy and use at home.

And what made you decide to make such a dramatic career change?

I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur from a young age. I was always into fashion and then took a course in fashion journalism – but had no clear idea of what my own business would be back then.

114 SEPT/OCT 2014 | littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

Have you ever regretted it?

No matter how much research you do and testing of your idea, the real difference between people that set up their own businesses, and people that talk about it, is in the end you have to take a breath and take the leap. Prepare your business plan and be as ready as you can be, but nothing can prepare you for your first day of trading. Anyone who thinks becoming an entrepreneur is a fast track to wealth needs to think again. However, it does give you a wealth of experience incredibly quickly and as long as you can see profits ahead, you know that you will get there in the end.

Never. This year is Nails inc’s 15th anniversary and its is my absolute passion. There have been so many exciting, rewarding moments along the way that it is only when you stop and reflect to do a talk like this that you realise what an exciting journey it has been.

What three things could you not live without?

How did you find having young babies and a young business?

In terms of work I would say one of my proudest achievements was being awarded an MBE for services to the beauty industry in 2011 and the nails inc team is up there, too – I work with a fantastic team of women who all feel passionate about the brand and are willing to voice their opinion and all believe that the customer comes first. In terms of my kids, I am proud at every sports day and cricket match that I attend.

My children are 10, seven and four and I often get asked how I manage my work life balance. I only wish I knew the answer. The reality is, it is one hell of a juggling act and often one area in your life needs more attention than the other.

Is it easier now they are older?

I learnt to plan my life meticulously. I have lists, and rotas, and a good support network. I have also invested in multiples of everything be it calculators, kinds stationary or school hats. I’m proud when my kids ask me for their lost items and I produce them from my little stash!

My family; my new Valentino studded flats and nails inc Kensington Caviar 45 second drying top coat.

Which achievements are you most proud of – both work and family?

What's the first thing you think of when you wake up and the last thing when you go to bed at night?

In the morning I think: “What’s my schedule for the day?”. Last thing at night I’m usually thinking about my kids. LL
