WELCOME Well, the days are now shorter, colder, darker, and I don’t know about you, but whizzing by at the speed of light?! But I have to say I love this time of year. I’m embracing winter and all the delights that come with it – the hearty meals, cosying up by the fire, crisp park walks, and being layered up to the nines in the chunkiest of knits! This year we held our ceremony at the glitzy Searcys in Knightsbridge, where we were joined by friends and nominees. Champagne was sipped, canapés devoured, and proud award winners congratulated! A real pain
WHILE CHILDHOOD HEADACHES ARE INCREDIBLY COMMON, THEY CAN BE REDUCED BY MAKING SIMPLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES
H
eadaches don’t just affect adults – they’re one of the most common neurological symptoms children and young people present to doctors. Consultant paediatrician, Dr Nagi Barakat, runs a headache clinic at Bupa Cromwell Hospital and treats all kinds of headaches in children and young people. Here Dr Barakat explains what causes headaches and how to treat them.
WHAT ARE HEADACHES? Headaches refer to pain involving the eye socket, forehead, scalp and temples but not the face or neck. There are two main types that can affect children; primary headaches, which aren’t the result of another condition, and secondary headaches, which are. Primary headaches include chronic or recurrent headaches and migraines. Chronic or recurrent headaches occur in 60-69 per cent of those aged seven to nine, and in 75 per cent by the age of 15. Up to 28 per cent of older teenagers experience migraines regularly. Secondary headaches can be caused by a number of different conditions, the most serious of which is a brain tumour. This is very rare and only affects about three children in 100,000 per year.
HOW TO TREAT THEM A detailed history of symptoms and a clinical examination play a major role in getting the diagnosis right. Taking images of the structure of the nervous system – known as brain magnetic reasoning imaging (MRI) – isn’t always needed in primary headaches but often is in secondary. The management of headaches is totally dependent on the diagnosis. Medications used in primary acute headaches include paracetamol, ibuprofen, diclofenic and triptans. If nausea or vomiting is present, anti-sickness drugs can be used too. Chronic headaches that occur three to LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK
four times per month, including migraines, should be treated with prophylactic drugs, which guard against disease. These include propranolol, pizotifen, amitryptline, topiramate, as well as others prescribed by a specialist. The length of treatment depends on how well the child responds and if no response is detected with a maximum dose, the diagnosis should be revisited. For migraines with or without aura (visual disturbances before the migraine itself), sumatriptan or zolmitriptan nasal spray is much better than oral medication, and can be used with ibuprofen or paracetamol. Antisickness drugs can be used with these as well.
SELF-HELP TIPS You can help reduce your child’s headaches by making simple lifestyle changes. For example, incorporating more relaxation, regular sleep, healthy meals, plenty of fluids and exercise (when there’s no headache present). If your 21
child feels the early onset of a headache, encourage them to avoid using screens, and relax in a quiet, dark space for 30-60 minutes. When it comes to chronic and tension headaches, it’s vital to both avoid overusing or suddenly stopping medication.
SPECIALIST SUPPORT Accessing psychological help is also often recommended for recurrent and chronic headaches. Referral to a headache clinic can be done early, as part of a combined approach involving your GP and taking medication. Seeking guidance from a specialist at an early stage is key to reducing your anxieties and your child’s discomfort. You’ve just released your first children’s book, Madame Badobedah. What can you tell us about it?
It’s a mystery story about a little girl called Mabel, who lives in a B&B called The Mermaid Hotel, which is by the seaside and owned by her mum and dad. One day, an enigmatic old lady checks in, with all her worldly possessions and a collection of animals. Mabel suspects that she’s a supervillain on the run from the police, and goes on a quest to catch her out. They end up developing an unlikely friendship and embarking on fantastical exploits together. You’ve been writing books for adults since 2003. What inspired you to write for children?
I think it was having children of my own and reading them the books I loved as a child, like Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans, Eloise by Kay Thompson, and a fantastic book called Miss Rumphius by author and illustrator Barbara Cooney. One day, I saw a picture of Mabel in my head, barefoot, walking back from the beach, and with that, the story of Madame Badobedah started forming in my head. For me, books always start with a picture. Writing for adults is so different, as you have less space and need to get to the point more quickly. Did you worry about writing for children, given your family’s heritage?
Oh god, my family’s heritage is such that I’d never do anything if I thought about that too deeply. I’d lie in bed moaning and rocking, and never leave my house! I tend to just get on with it. I’ve already written four books for adults, so it didn’t feel like a weird stretch for me. It actually felt very organic and exciting. LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK
What are your favourite days out with the kids?
What do your children – Lyra and Margot – think about the book?
They really like it, which is a relief. Their favourite question to ask me is, “But is Madame Badobedah a real villain?”. That seems to be the universal question from children who read the book. Which other books do you enjoy reading to your children?
We love Astrid Lindgren, who wrote Pippi Longstocking, along with many other brilliant books. We’re also big fans of JK Rowling, David Walliams, Judith Kerr and Jill Murphy. The most enchanting picture book that I’ve given to everyone recently is called Julián is a Mermaid by Jessica Love. It’s a beautiful book. I also really like I Want My Hat Back by John Klassan and My Big Shouting Day by Rebecca Patterson.
They’re very park-focused! I love Hyde Park, as it has so many hidden corners. There’s a sweet little café on the Lancaster Gate side of the park that’s good for an ice cream on a sunny day. The playground in Holland Park is huge and fun, and you can walk to Portobello Road afterwards to try on old hats, then head to Lucky Seven for milkshakes and diner food. And on a rainy day… the Science Museum in South Kensington, hands down. Which London bookshop do you most enjoy visiting?
I’m a huge fan of Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street. The staff there are so knowledgable about what they have, and they always make fantastic recommendations. For an epic kids’ independent book shop, look no further than Ottie and The Bea in Blackheath. The owner, Julia, has a heavenly selection of eclectic kids’ books, along with toys and some great childrenswear.
What’s your favourite ‘hidden gem’ in London?
What else have you got in the pipeline for the rest of the year?
The Little Angel Theatre in Islington consistently produces great, funny and interesting puppet theatre. It’s quite hidden away and it’s totally magical.
I’m writing my next children’s book and appearing at various festivals with Madame Badobedah. And of course, I’m still juggling life, children and various feral animals. I currently have my eye on a pet duck… L

HALLE BERRY MAY BE ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST INSPIRATIONAL ACTRESSES, BUT THIS COMES A DISTANT SECOND TO WHAT SHE DEEMS HER MOST PIVOTAL ROLE IN LIFE, AS A MOTHER, KAREN OVERTON DISCOVERS
A
s parenting types go, Halle Berry takes a strong, dominant, independent approach, certainly if her film roles are any sort of reference. Only very rarely will you see the 53 year old cowering away in a romcom or emotive thriller – instead, her movie modus operandi is rather more centred towards high-octane action in the form of X-Men, Bond, Catwoman and Kingsman. Yet, to assume the three-times married Ohio-born actress, philanthropist and campaigner doesn’t possess a calm, affective side is to do her a disservice. Sure, the tempestuous, feisty personality is always there, bubbling under the surface, but no sooner does she begin to speak of the love, commitment and total absorption she has in the lives of her children – Nahla, 11, and Maceo, six – that you gain the truest, lightest, gentlest reflection of this big-screen heavyweight. “I think you can be many things as an actress, or in fact in any other job, no matter what it is – you can bluff you way through that and no one need ever know,” she begins. “But when it comes to parenthood, to being a mother… there is only one person you can ever be, and that’s yourself.” In fact, maybe the truest side of Halle Berry was the one we witnessed with tears rolling down her cheeks as she accepted the 2002 Academy Award for Monster’s Ball for Best Actress – ironically, one of the few movies that saw her embrace emotional twists and turns, playing a struggling widow and single mother with heart-breaking candour. It’s notable that after a real surge of mainstream success leading up to X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, she began to slow down her work. “I chose to reassess my life,” she says. “I had done so much in such a short space of time, and soon enough there was this beautiful girl, Nahla, in front of me, and the realisation was that I needed to stop.” Her daughter, from her relationship with French Canadian 48

model Gabriel Aubry, is very much in the imprint of Halle herself. She is confident, considered and has inherited her father’s height. Meanwhile, Maceo, the actress’s son from exhusband Olivier Martinez, the French actor, is an effortlessly adventurous youngster. “Maceo loves his clothes, martial arts – he’s sporty, he’s into everything… he’s a boy!” she says. “For Nahla, I love spending time with her, mother and daughter. She’s at an age where we can shop together, chat about girl things – it’s such a pleasure. “It has worked out well. I’ve truly invested in my children and would have so regretted it if I hadn’t. It was only right for my priorities to change because those years have been sweet.” Fortunately, Hollywood has welcomed the actress back with open arms as she enjoys a career renaissance culminating in this year’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. “It’s interesting that so many of my characters are strong, complicated, determined women,” she says. “I like to think of myself in those terms. I’ve been a fighter all my life and I want my kids to find their own way, too. As I say to them, it’s so important to find something you are passionate about.” Even Halle’s commercial ventures – she launched a budget lingerie line, Scandale, and previously worked with low-cost German shoe brand Deichmann – suggests she has never moved too far from the reality of the average working mother. Her own upbringing came in the midst of violent passages between her parents, and she has spoken at length about the incredible role model provided by her mother, Judith. “My work ethic, tenacity and courage is all thanks to her,” she says. Halle, who has also followed a strict philosophy on fitness and health, has a sugar-free diet, but rather than just a vanity pursuit, it is an essential way of life after she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes aged 19. “It was almost a blessing for me, because it took me down a path where I had health and diet as a central part of who I was. And if I failed to live up to that, I could be in big trouble.” As for the future, it’s kids only… for now. Last year, she took to Instagram wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the slogan, ‘No More Boyfriends’, yet, more recently, was in a relationship with British music producer Alex Da Halle stars alongside Kneau ee es in er latest l Kid. “I no longer believe in 'John Wick: Chapter 3 that magical marriage – I’ve arabellu proved it doesn’t necessarily work out the way you want it to; but that alone doesn’t mean you cannot move forward and have a wonderful life with those who matter the

most – your children. There is no relationship above that. In fact, the positive experiences have just made me focus more on my children, and I am so grateful for that. They are the ones who make me a better individual and give so much meaning to my life. They offer so much joy.” By her own admission, that joy came relatively late – Halle had her first child at 41, but believes she made the correct decision to wait. “I was right to hold off. Your job as a mother is to pay close attention to who you are and what you can offer, and I just don’t think I would have been as good a mother in my twenties or even in my thirties. It took me time to figure out so many things in my life – who I was, how to become happy – before I could reach the point where I could be the kind of mother I wanted to be.” While the actress has flirted with the idea of living in Paris – in part influenced by her relationships with Aubry and Martinez – the family of three remain in LA. Beverly Hills certainly fails to provide the cultural and amorous je ne sais quoi of the French capital culture, but it is perfectly convenient for film projects. Indeed, in the immediate aftermath of Maceo’s birth, Halle had to take her son on the set of TV series Extant, something which fuelled her advocacy for breastfeeding. “I didn’t really have a choice because I’d been nursing Maceo from day one, and I believe very strongly in it. Breastfeeding is such a gift from nature and no woman should be made to feel uncomfortable about looking after her child. “I was proud to breastfeed on set – it was a good statement. Overall, I am very conscious of living in a way that will inspire my children,” she says. “I want to love them, teach them and help them grow up with a sense of curiosity and generosity that will carry them through life.” L

These Rudolph-inspired pancakes are perfect for Christmas morning
Rudolph Pancakes By Annabel Karmel Prep Time: 15 minutes • Cook Time: 20 minutes •Makes: 4 stacked pancakes
INGREDIENTS: • Pancake batter • 100g plain flour • A generous pinch of salt • 2 eggs • 150 ml milk • 50g melted butter • Cooked bacon rashers • Blueberries • Strawberries • Maple syrup to serve METHOD Sift the flour with a big pinch of salt into a mixing bowl, make a well in the centre and add the eggs. Use a balloon whisk to incorporate the eggs into the flour and gradually whisk in the milk. Stir the mixture until smooth but don’t over mix. Use a heavy based 15 to 18cm frying pan and brush with melted butter – you can use a pastry brush for this – and when hot, pour in about 2 tbsp of batter. Quickly tilt the pan from side to side until you get a circular layer of batter covering the base of the frying pan. Cook the pancake for about one minute, then flip it over – you can use a spatula for this – and cook until the underside is lightly flecked with gold. Continue with the rest of the batter and make pancakes of varying sizes and shapes as in the photograph (for the smaller pancakes you will only need 1 to 2 tbsp of batter). Brush the pan with melted butter when necessary. Stack the pancakes on top of each other and arrange the bacon rashers as antlers and add blueberries for eyes and a strawberry for the nose.

As we turned into the Cary Arms and Spa, in the sheltered haven of Babbacombe Bay, on the south Devon coast, there was nothing but ocean in front of us. This luxury boutique de Savary hotel offers a selection of chic selfcatering cottages, as well as a glass-faceted sea-facing spa. Nestled into the hillside, our aptly named ‘Smuggler’s Cottage’ provided everything we needed, from board games to a children’s den, and a welcome hamper including sticks of rock for the children and sloe gin for the grown-ups. There’s nothing quite like seeing your little explorers’ faces as they get up close and personal with the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinoceroses. Some camps will take preschoolers (be sure to check policies beforehand), but keep in mind that in order to reach any safari resort you’ll be travelling for at least 10 hours in total. The ideal age for your child’s first safari is around seven or eight – not only by that age are children more engaged with the world around them and ready to appreciate the experience, they’re
also more adept at travelling, being flexible with mealtimes and better behaved when out on long game drives. When you’re there, try to incorporate a mix of activities into your days, including walks, horse riding and cultural activities. Tswalu Kalahari offers one of the largest private game reserves in Africa, with all the big-game characters, or head to Madikwe – currently the fifth largest – which is home to more than 8,000 animals. There are many other lesser-known areas worthy of exploring, too, such as those in Namibia, where you’ll find zebra, rhinos and giraffes, not to mention a significant cheetah population.

ave your children reached an age where they want to trade sandcastles for something a little less sedate? If you have a real water baby on your hands, a surfing holiday may be just the ticket. Each child is different, but generally speaking, those aged around seven or eight are usually ready to embrace the ocean. Unless you’re a pro yourself, be sure to check them into surf school or organise private lessons – the sea has so much to offer but, of course, safety is paramount. Before you pack your passport, you may want to consider a coastal adventure closer to home. Cornwall has a plethora of beaches for surfing opportunists, plus a multitude of great surf schools. Britain’s very own ‘Surf City’, Newquay, has been
attracting thrillseekers for more than 80 years, with Fistral Beach coined as the birthplace of the British surf scene. If you’re after guaranteed sunshine, ripcurling waves and a short-haul flight, Portugal makes a brilliant destination for family surfing. Try to visit during the summer months, when the waves are much calmer. For a safe place to start, and home to some of Portugal’s most consistent surf beaches and schools, try Peniche – around 50 miles north of Lisbon – or Ericeira, also on the western coast. If you want to travel outside of Europe there are many options further afield, too. Morocco’s Atlantic coast, Taghazout, has become quite the family surf spot, with a number of brilliant beaches, or head to the vibrant Punta Mita in Mexico.

Did you travel anywhere nice this summer? We went to Fowey Hall in Cornwall, which is part of the Luxury Family Hotels Group, and it was wonderful. The hotel group caters for families really well, so any of the normal problems that present themselves when you have children just disappear. We loved the baby-listening service, too, which meant Jack and I could enjoy a meal and a glass of wine in peace, knowing Wren was totally safe. How do you like to spend your days on holiday? I always like to do a bit of everything, but I hadn’t realised how much that would change when you have a baby or a toddler. We’d never want to go away anywhere that’s too hot, as Wren has red hair and fair skin, so we can’t spend too much time in the sun. I think that’s what’s great about having kids, though – you start rediscovering the things you used to do when you were a child. We’ve recently started

Poolside or beachside? I love the idea of lying on a beach and reading a book all day, but that becomes more difficult when you have a little one! Our holidays have become a lot more active since we became parents.
Organised packer or last-minute madness? I’m pretty organised. If I haven’t started prepping what I’m going to take on holiday two days before I go, I feel really unprepared. There’s nothing worse than being on a Greek island and realising you’ve forgotten something, and there’s nowhere nearby that sells what you need.

Do you have any go-to travel essentials? For Wren, I always take Huggies Little Swimmers nappies, and a good baby wash. I love Neal’s Yard Baby Bath & Shampoo, as it cuts through the grease of all the suncream you’ve been layering on their skin throughout the day. Wardrobe-wise, her staple is definitely Zara Kids, as the clothes are easy and stylish. Then for myself, I take a hair mask to stop my hair getting too dry, and I always take a face mist when I’m travelling. After I’ve finished filming Call the Midwife and rehearsing for a play I’m in, I have a few weeks off over Christmas, which I’m so excited about. I’d love to take Wren to Lapland over Christmas one day as well, but she’s a bit young at the moment, so we’ll have to wait for that one!

s the weather drops, sun protection gets little air time. But did you know that to avoid longterm sun damage and the risk of developing skin cancer, sun cream needs to be applied all year round? “Any sunburn on children’s skin is especially worrying, because young skin is much thinner than that of an adult, making it far more susceptible to damage,” explains Childs Farm’s consultant dermatologist, Dr Jennifer Crawley. “Sunburn in childhood dramatically increases the chance of skin cancer in later life; it really is imperative that parents take the right steps to protect their little ones when they are outdoors whatever time of year.” With more than 10 years’ experience in dermatology, working from the University College Hospital London, Dr Crawley believes re-education is needed when it comes to sun protection and is urging people to get out of the mindset that sun cream is just for holidays abroad or for peak heatwaves. “I think we need to really make the point when we are talking about sun protection, it’s not just blistering heatwave sun; we are talking about UV light,” Dr Crawley says. “Getting sunburn just once every two years can triple the risk of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. That’s why it’s so important to be applying sun cream all year round. Skin cancers take a long time to occur and this is because of an accumulation of UV damage over time, making it fundamental to protect skin from an early age.” But how do you know when enough is really enough? “One of the main problems we find is that people don’t apply an adequate amount,” says Dr Crawley. “We recommend at least two teaspoons for the head and neck area and two tablespoons for the body. But you can’t apply too much, so use it liberally.” Many of us are aware that sun cream does wear off so will apply twice during the day, but does that cut it? “While this is a good start, sun cream really does need applying more than twice, particularly on very hot days,” explains Dr Crawley. “It’s

Dr Crawley’s top tips for sun safety • On hot days and when you’re abroad keep little ones in the shade between 11am and 3pm when the sun is hottest • Cover any exposed skin with sun cream even on cloudy days • Use a high factor SPF 30+ suncream, with protection against UVA and UVB rays • Reapply numerous times throughout the day, especially after swimming • Pay particular attention to forgotten areas such as the shoulders, back of the neck and behind the ears when applying • Where possible, cover up skin with a hat, loose fitting clothing and sunglasses • Always keep babies under the age of six months out of direct sunlight • For those who have sensitive or eczemaprone skin, use a product that has been clinically tested as suitable

CHRISTMAS TREE FELT DECORATIONS You will need: • Scissors • Felt • Pins • Needle • Thread • Stuffing (or cotton wool) Method • Cut out two Christmas trees from the felt and pin them together. • Using a blanket stitch, stitch the two Christmas trees together. Leave a space at the bottom. • Put the stuffing inside and finish sewing up the last part of the hole. • Make a loop at the top with thread so that you can hang the decoration.

You will need: • 1 tbsp oil • 2 medium white onions, chopped • 1 garlic clove, chopped • 1 whole seasonal squash, peeled and diced • 300g pearl barley

• 1 litre chicken stock • Parsley, to taste • 1 tbsp butter (optional) • 3 tbsp Parmesan, grated (optional) Method • In a large saucepan, heat the oil, sauté the onions and garlic until soft. • Stir in the squash and cook for a few minutes. • Add the barley and cook until well coated. • Pour over a ladle full of boiling stock at a time. Make sure each one is fully absorbed before adding the next. Keep stirring. • It takes about 25 minutes to cook fully. I like to cover mine in parsley, butter and Parmesan, but my son is dairy intolerant, so we leave that off for him.

LONDON Editor REBECCA MOORE enjoys a family trip a little closer to home IT’S TRUE, LONDON REALLY DOES come alive at Christmas time – especially when you throw two overexcited kids into the mix. My nephew and niece, Sam and Sophie, had never experienced the capital during the festive period, so I presented myself with the task to show London in all its glitzy glory. I was keen for us to be central, to take in most of the city by foot, and by choosing St Ermin’s Hotel – in leafy St James’s – we were in the middle of all the action. The four-star hotel is quintessentially charming, with its rich colours and tree-lined courtyard, looking prettier than ever as the lights twinkled from the Christmas tree by the entrance. The hotel clearly knows a thing or two about families. From the friendly welcome at check-in, to tasking Sam and Sophie with their own detective mission with a Budding Bonds package, which tests code-breaking and observational skills in and around the hotel – a great idea for keeping two budding spies occupied. We were shown our plush family room – equipped with two double beds and two bathrooms, to ensure squabbles were kept at bay. Once we’d dumped our bags, we headed into town, in true tourist fashion taking in Buckingham Palace, The London
Eye and Big Ben (even if he’s looking covered up!). To get the kids in the festive spirit, we stopped at Somerset House, laced up and took a spin – and a couple of tumbles – on the ice to the beat of Christmas songs. After several laps of the rink, we went shopping, as I’d promised a visit to Hamleys – dangerous, or perhaps foolish, before Christmas Day, but it was lovely to see so many cheery little faces. With gifts gratefully received, tired legs didn’t have far to travel, and before we knew it, we were all tucked up in our sumptuous beds. Waking fully rested, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast, before heading out for a stroll around St James’s Park, Sam and Sophie desperate to find more clues for their mission – it also allowed us to build up our appetites for afternoon tea back at the hotel. St Ermin’s tea menu uses fresh ingredients from the hotel’s rooftop garden and honey from its urban bee colony, Bee&Bee, up on the third floor. Children are well catered for, too; Sam and Sophie loved decorating their gingerbread men – although perseverance subsided when it came to eating them! Just saving enough room for their Santa lollypop, reindeer tea cake and spiced cookie mousse. L

EDUCATION Friendships made can be at the heart of your child’s experience at school

A
s children settle into pre-prep, it’s helpful to keep things as simple as possible, to ensure they’re confident in their new environment. My advice is to use the ‘3Rs’ to help create a successful first term. The first of these ‘Rs’ stands for ‘rules’. Children adapt to a number of rules in their new classrooms, which are there to guide them through a busy day with a class of fellow pupils they’ve often only just met. It’s important children are independent in terms of getting dressed, knowing where to place their own things, and what’s expected of them when they first arrive. They may well be learning to share with more children than they’re used to at home or in smaller nursery classes. Each classroom will have its own rules, and it’s helpful for parents to understand the basics. Are personal items, like small toys, allowed, or should they stay at home? Are parents encouraged into the classroom in the mornings or afternoon, or does the teacher prefer for you to drop and go? Back
the staff ’s decisions and aim for consistency behind home and school. The second ‘R’ stands for ‘routines’. Every school term brings with it a whole set of new routines, and the school run, extracurricular activities, and additional events like harvest festivals and nativities seem to come at lightning speed in the first year. By half term, a clear routine should be in place, and time should be built in for reading, including any books from school. It’s advised that you continue to read to your child as much as you can, as research shows that those children who are read to throughout their primary years are more likely to achieve academically and read for pleasure themselves. Establishing routines when it comes to kit and equipment, and knowing which day your child needs their PE kit or when special events are happening helps for a smooth start. Beware of WhatsApp groups among parents, as you can find yourself inundated with comments on lost blazers and speculations as to when the next ‘dressing up’ day is. Instead, rely on information from the school or

calendar apps, and find out whether there’s a class rep system or newsletter. The third ‘R’ relates to ‘relationships’. We need to remember that these can be at the heart of your child’s experience at school. There’ll be friendships negotiated, numerous names to learn, and a chance to play and learn alongside a whole range of different personalities. Relationships with the class teacher and teaching assistant are key for both your child and you, but don’t worry if you’re not able to be at the school for the daily drop-off or collection. Instead, try to make time for a handshake and quick chat at some point, and attend parents’ evening, where you can meet other staff from the school. Here at St Catherine’s, we use a TAG system, which is particularly useful at breaktimes, when children are playing with new friends. This encourages every child to ‘Talk’ and ‘Ask’ for what they need or want, and ‘Get’ help if they’re still unsure or happy. REIMA The international communications manager talks sustainability and milestones Tell us the story behind the brand.
Reima’s roots date back to 1944, after the Second World War ended. Many new factories were being founded at this time, which opened up new opportunities for mothers to work outside the home. This was the era of the baby boom, so there was a sudden, much higher demand for durable, affordable children’s clothing. How would you describe the brand?
Reima is actually a traditional male name in Finland, and is roughly synonymous with the
idea of being brisk, energetic, honest, fair, reliable and positive. I’d say that describes our brand pretty well, too! Reima has just marked its 75th anniversary. Why do you think the brand has stood the test of time?
We’ve always aimed to keep our products durable and of a high quality. There were times when this was considered quite an old-fashioned outlook, and we struggled with the pressure to ‘go with the flow’, but now, along with the emergence of sustainability issues, our focus on creating quality, durable products is more relevant than ever before. Tell us more about the commitment to sustainability.
Durability is definitely our strong point, which is very important when making clothes using synthetic fibres. This material is by far the smartest solution for kids’ outerwear, as it has to be
water and dirt repellent. We also encourage customers to mend, reuse and resell their clothes, and our products are also designed to be washed at lower temperatures, all of which greatly affects their ecological footprint. The clothes have to be toxin-free and safe, not only for the wearer but also for the environment; this means all our fabrics are safe and free from any hazardous chemicals. We try to do more with ecological materials, too, including recycled plastic bottles, which can be used in place of polyester. Bamboo and Tencel are crucial materials for us, and in just a few years, all our cotton will be entirely organic. We also don’t use any real fur, as animal rights are hugely important to us. What’s the best thing about your job?
I enjoy being the link between our design, marketing and sales teams, helping to create our great products. I feel privileged to be able to influence and contribute to our sustainability work. What’s in the pipeline for next year?
In spring, we’ll be bringing our first monomaterial product to market, which is made entirely from one single type of material – this means it’ll be easier to recycle when it comes to the end of its life. We think this is the direction the industry should be going in where synthetic fibres are concerned. L reima.com
