FROM A SELECTION ALEXANDALEXA.COM
WELCOME Hello and welcome to Little London’s travel edition, a magazine so packed full of adventurous ideas for the coming months, you’ll get itchy feet just reading it. With the Easter holidays coming up, what better place to start than our Agenda pages, jam-packed full of bunny-inspired days out around the capital (p.91). For those looking for further-flung escapades, our guide to the best adventure holidays – with surf, sail, safari and ski – is a must read (p.54), and never one to miss a trick, we’re getting in on the trend for ‘3G’ (or three-generation) holidays for children, parents and grandparents, without a family squabble in sight (p.60). I also take my children on an unmissable safari adventure at the brilliantly close-to-home Port Lympne in Kent (p.52). We catch up with Hollywood star Penélope Cruz, to talk family and finding peace in her new home in Madrid (p.46), as well as Peanut co-founder Michelle Kennedy, who is full of insights on London and life with her four-yearold son, Fin (p.30). Carole Middleton shows us how to throw the ultimate Lego-themed party in celebration of 60 years since the toy brick was invented (p.70), and check out our beautiful nostalgic fashion shoot, with all the latest must-haves in kids’ trends (p.38). On a more serious note, we look at why reading with your children at home is crucial to their education (p.85) and the importance of looking after your kids’ teeth from an early age (p.78). And finally, it’s goodbye from me for now as I am heading off on maternity leave with baby number three – an exciting, if slightly daunting, prospect! In the meantime, the brilliant Rebecca Moore, a Baby London and Little London pro with six years on the titles, will be filling my shoes. Welcome, Becca!

My Little London
M I C H E L L E K E N N E DY THE CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF PEANUT, AND MOTHER TO FOUR-YEAR-OLD FIN, TALKS TRAVEL, WEEKEND ROUTINES AND REVEALS WHY MOTHERHOOD IS ANYTHING BUT A SOLO EFFORT Michelle reveals she felt lonely as a new parent, despite her close friendships and successful career
relationship with Fin, motherhood continues to show me that it’s not a solo effort. You need a community, a support network. We all need advice and we all want reassurance, whatever stage of life our child is at.
Where in London do you call home?
North West. I live in Hampstead. Describe a typical weekend for you.
INTERVIEW: ANNIE QUINTON. PHOTOGRAPHY: PEANUT; ISTOCK; SHUTTERSTOCK; INSTAGRAM.COM/MICHELLEKENNEDYLON
Saturday morning breakfast is my favourite – our only real sit-down family breakfast of the week. It’s definitely not peaceful, but it’s a comforting chaos, and beats trying to be out of the door by 8am. The rest of the day is spent supporting Fin’s social life, running between rugby or football, and various birthday parties. Sundays are about walks on the Heath, roast dinners, and if it’s raining, and I can persuade him, Disney movies snuggled together on the sofa. Where do you like to shop for Fin?
Smallable is my favourite for décor and cool furniture pieces. Clothing-wise, Scamp & Dude always looks great on Fin and I love the message behind the brand. For basics, you can’t beat Petit Bateau and Jacadi. Toys, I try to pick things up in the US when I am there, just for a bit of variety. The Museum of Modern Art has some great learning toys. Tell us how you came to set up Peanut.
Peanut was born out of two main issues – the first was the emotional aspect of becoming a mother. Before Fin arrived, I felt prepared. I had bought everything I needed, I’d read the books. Turns out, there are feelings and demands you can’t plan for. My girlfriends weren’t at the stage in their life where they were having children, and even if some of my wider friendship group were, we all lived in different parts of the city. I suppose what I felt most prominently, which isn’t particularly comfortable to admit, is that I was lonely. LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Have you done much travelling with Fin?
I had lots of friends, I was successful professionally, and yet, when I was at home, I felt lonely. This was further compounded by the fact I was working in an industry [dating], where it was my day-to-day to produce products people could use to find a match, and I was struggling to find a woman who was like-minded enough to go for coffee with. A little like dating, I also experienced a lot of, ‘I have to introduce you to my friend, she’s a mummy, too’, only to realise the only thing you have in common is the fact you both have a child. That was even more isolating. The second was my frustration with existing products on the market aimed at mothers. I didn’t recognise the tone of voice, or the look and feel of them. They felt outdated and in some cases patronising. I found that confusing. I still had expectations of slick user experience, from products like Uber or Instagram, but I wasn’t getting that. So building something like Peanut, well, it felt long overdue. How has your experience of motherhood changed as Fin grows up?
We’ve grown into each other. By that, I mean we understand each other, we understand our roles, our flaws and we’re a team. He’s my best pal, and my heart aches for him when I’m travelling for work. I suppose past my 31
Fin loves to travel! He’s been everywhere, we took him to Brazil when he was just four months old. I adore Zighy Bay in Oman for family friendly indulgence. And my best friend got married in India at the end of last year, and Fin absolutely loved it. The colours, the smells, the noise. It was one of our most special trips by far. What are your child travel essentials?
Snacks. More snacks than you ever thought you would need, and then more than that – they are the best distraction. And stickers – lots of sticker books. For long-haul flights, pyjamas and muslins, so you can make anything feel cosy and smell like home. And if you’re travelling with your partner, take it in turns on the flight to be entertainer. What’s next for Peanut?
We launch Peanut Pages! Peanut Pages allows our users to explore ‘Pages’ (or topics) where they can ask and answer questions, share experiences and converse across the 300,000 women-wide network. I am so incredibly excited and proud of this feature because the core mission of Peanut is about connecting like-minded mothers, and now, we can encourage women to share another page from their book, and really build their support network. MEET THE AUTHOR
Alesha Dixon
I’ve always been someone who enjoys writing – whether that’s music, poetry, or books that have never seen the light of day – but I guess the initial idea came from reading to my daughter every night, seeing the kinds of books she reads and the films she watches, and noticing the imbalance. Superheroes are something we’ve all grown up
with, but I feel like Aurora Beam’s character – an 11-year-old girl of colour from the UK – is quite new. I felt like this was a good opportunity to inspire children to realise everyone has the ability to achieve what they want. And although Aurora Beam is the one with all the superpowers, she’s helped by a lot of people. She has an amazing group of friends called the Bright Sparks, and they all play a really key role in her succeeding.
What does Azura read?
She loves Julia Donaldson; Room on the Broom is her favourite, and The Highway Rat. Whenever I read to her, she usually interjects two sentences in – Azura likes to make up her own stories! Who were your heroes when you were younger?
When I was little, it was popstars like Diana Ross, Madonna and Neneh Cherry. And, of course, Oprah Winfrey; I think she uses her platform really responsibly. There are people she has interviewed on her Super Soul Sunday show like Marianne Williamson, Gary Zukav and Wayne Dyer, and it’s those kinds of authors I like to read now.
How does it compare with your TV and music work?
Very different! Firstly, the book was a collaborative process with [author] Katy Birchall, who is incredible. I think of myself as a bit of a juggler – I have to switch modes every day – but this hasn’t felt like work at all. Even on holiday, I found myself coming up with plots for my next book. My dream is to one day see it come alive in animation.
How do you manage to juggle work with family life?
I’m lucky to have a really good support system and our jobs allow us flexibility so Azura has me all weekend. Having 34
a child is a huge adjustment, but everything is doable, you just have to get used to a new normal. For anyone who feels overwhelmed, the only thing you can do is try to take some time for yourself. Remember, everything that tries to trip you up will eventually pass; the sun is always shining, it’s all good! What else are you working on right now?
Britain’s Got Talent is happening, and I’m back in the recording studio. I don’t have a concrete plan to release anything right now, but I’m enjoying making new music. For the second half of the year, I’d like to try acting and do more voiceover work, too. I loved doing the voice of Bliss in The Powerpuff Girls, and that’s the kind of creative direction I’d like to keep moving in. How did your blog, Travel Babbo, come about?
I started blogging after I took my eight year old to Antarctica – it seemed like the easiest way to tell family and friends about the trip. Then others started reading and it grew quickly.
What are your essentials for travelling with children?
We always travel with kids’ medicines and a thermometer, a linen towel, a frisbee, a clothesline, sunscreen, insect repellent, and extra Ziploc bags. Who do you like to follow on social media?
Almost all of the accounts I

I let my kids choose our destinations. Each gets to choose anywhere to go with me one-on-one every year, and they pick based on their interests. Where is on your list for 2018?
This year we’re travelling to Greenland, the Galápagos, Brazil, Italy, Japan, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Lithuania. And we have a few open weeks too, so could end up anywhere! Favourite place you’ve visited as a family?
We love France, Italy and Greece, and return to at least one of them every summer. Florence is my favourite city in the world, and my wife and kids have come to love it as well. L

CONTROL SHE MAY BE ONE HALF OF A HOLLYWOOD POWER COUPLE, BUT PENÉLOPE CRUZ KNOWS FULL WELL THAT FAME IS FLEETING, SO HOW DOES SHE STRIKE THE PERFECT BALANCE WITH TWO SMALL CHILDREN? KAREN ANNE OVERTON FINDS OUT
M
“
The mother talks openly about family life
LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK
otherhood has been a revolutionary experience,” declares actress Penélope Cruz. “I’m a very different woman today – I worry less, I cook more, and my life revolves around my family now. Everything has changed for the better. “Your way of seeing the world is different and you appreciate life more. It’s the most wonderful thing that can happen to a woman.” Warm, passionate and full of life, the Spanish siren loves to talk about her handsome film star husband, Javier Bardem, and their two children – Leo, seven, and Luna, four. And much like the fiery femmes she often portrays on screen, Cruz exudes that same enthusiasm, particularly when it comes to the subject of motherhood. In fact, so dear are the 43-year-old’s children to her, that they have helped her conquer a lifelong obsession – her work. “I think the love of my children and my partner has made me happy,” she muses. “But even before I became a mother I had decided to quit being addicted to my work. I was working so much – sometimes doing five films in 12 months – that I didn’t even have time anymore to prepare for each role, which is one of the things I love most about acting.” Revealing that life on set had become consuming to the extent her emotional wellbeing began to suffer, Cruz now admits things had gone too far. “It was scary,” she says. “I lost sight of the things that really matter. “Thankfully now I have a much more comfortable rhythm. When you’re raising two small children, you need a better balance.” Perhaps this is why she and Bardem – who first worked together on Jamón 47
INTERVIEW
The actress has received rave reviews for her role as Donatella Versace
Jamón in 1992 but didn’t fall for each other until their reunion in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona some 16 years later – decided to raise their brood in Madrid, far away from the intrusive glare of Hollywood. For if there is one thing that ruffles the actress’s feathers, it is those in the media who feel it’s OK to encroach on private moments that ought to be reserved for family photo albums. “It’s hard for me to be indifferent about some things, especially the paparazzi,” she says firmly. “I don’t mind if they take my picture, but I am furious if they take photos of me with my family, or with my children. I don’t think the media should have the right to publish photos of those so young.” Having been known to speak out against misogyny and ageism in the entertainment industry, as well as being an advocate for the use of plus-size models in fashion, it’s perhaps surprising to learn that Cruz is happy to be referred to by one of the most contentious terms in feminist lingo, ‘a housewife’. “Oh, I love being at home – I love being a housewife,” she laughs. “I love the word, too, and what it expresses, even though I know in English culture there is sometimes a negative sense attached to it; but I don’t see it that way.
“Let me say this – to be a mother and to look after my family is the most beautiful experience I could imagine,” adds Cruz. “I grew up in a very tightly-knit family where we had this wonderful atmosphere, and I have such fond memories of that time even though life was sometimes a struggle.” After an astonishing 30 years in the business, Cruz admits to feeling ‘blessed’ that so many wonderful opportunities are still coming her way – “I have to pinch myself sometimes!” she says. Having had her early career break in Spanish television, she has returned to British TV screens once more in Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which is already receiving rave reviews. Playing the inimitable Donatella Versace, Cruz has certainly taken on a lofty task, admitting that there is far more pressure in playing a person who not only is still 48
alive, but she knows personally. “It’s very intimidating!” she exclaims. But very little seems to faze the ravenhaired beauty, recently honoured with an award from France’s Academy of Arts and Techniques of Cinema, as part of the 43rd César Awards (largely considered to be France’s equivalent to the Oscars). Even when Cruz and her husband are tasked with jetting around the world for work, the star has found a practical solution to ensure the family share special moments as a unit. “Fortunately, I have a lot of help,” she smiles. “although I like to be with my children as much as possible. I think the relationship between a mother and her children is a very intense and joyful experience, and it’s important to me to help my children grow up to be confident adults. So I always try to bring my whole family along with me while I’m working.” Despite being more selective over roles nowadays, Cruz still admits to suffering from the odd bout of exhaustion, and fellow overrun mums may be relieved to hear that the actress’s biggest tip to maintaining both mental and physical wellbeing is to take a relaxed approach. “I drink a lot of water and try to get a good night’s sleep, even though that’s difficult with young children,” she says, with an accepting shrug of the shoulders. “I try to stay in good shape, but I don’t obsess about it. I usually go to the gym with friends and I love swimming and diving. I enjoy cooking and eating well, and I never go on extreme diets. I’m more careful with what I eat. But I love food and that will always be one of my great pleasures in life – food and children!” It appears that following both her instincts and her heart, Cruz has managed to strike the perfect balance between work and family life. “Every day I understand more about life and I learn a little more about who I am, but I feel good. I have a beautiful family and a job that I love, and which gives me a lot of freedom. I feel very grateful.” L LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

PORT LYMPNE K ATE FREUD and her children, Jago and Georgia, head off for a weekend safari in Kent I HAVEN’T VISITED A SAFARI PARK SINCE CHILDHOOD MYSELF, SO AM even more excited than the children at the prospect of what’s to come as we head down the M2 towards the Kent coast. Set in an impressive 600 acres of countryside, you really do get the sense that the animals – many of which are endangered – are able to roam as freely as possible here at Port Lympne Reserve. Our weekend adventure begins with a visit to the tigers, resplendantly baking in the midday sun and paying very little attention to their admirers on the other side of the fence. They merely whet the children’s appetites for what is to come, but first, following an excellent wood-fired pizza at the park’s Babydoll restaurant, we head to Rhino Lodge, our digs for the weekend. The beautiful cottage – newly refurbished in cosy country, Soho House style – overlooks the rhino enclosure and much to the delight of the children, the rhinos roam up to the garden fence within minutes of our arrival. Rhinos aside, one of the greatest thrills of the weekend proves to be our golf buggy. With small children in tow, there can be no more civilised way to see the sights.
Our next stop is the prehistoric Dinosaur Forest, which the children are blown away by. We then swing by Carnivore Territory to see the lions being fed – a gruesome sight but the children love it, and then it’s supper time for us, followed by sundowners at the Club House, a spectacular safari lodge with views Rhino Lodge over ‘the savannah’ (or Kent countryside). We toast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate and pile into bed tired but happy. A delicious breakfast at the Port Lympne Hotel the next morning sets us off on Georgia makes new friends the right foot before the Giraffe Safari. in Dinosaur Forest Our ranger drives us cross-country, with everything from impala to zebras roaming around us, before reaching the giraffes. Watching my son Jago hang on for dear life while feeding them bamboo is a highlight. Feeding time continues with the gorillas, A feeding frenzy on the Giraffe Safari who feast on kumquats and peanuts before it’s our turn for a last meal back at the hotel. The children are bereft at the prospect of returning the golf buggy, but have so many happy memories to savour before we return again next year. hey say never work with animals or children, but how about holidaying with them? There’s nothing quite like seeing your little explorers’ faces as they get up close and personal with the ‘big five’, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinoceroses. Some camps will take preschoolers (be sure to check policies beforehand), but keep in mind that in order to reach any safari resort you’ll be travelling for at least 10 hours in total. When you’re there, try to incorporate a mix of activities into your days, including walks, horse riding and cultural activities. Tswalu Kalahari offers one of the largest private game reserves in Africa, with all the big-game characters, or head to Madikwe – currently the fifth largest – which is home to more than 8,000 animals. There are many other lesser-known areas, too, such as those in Namibia, where you’ll find zebra, rhinos and giraffes, not to mention a significantly large population of cheetahs.

SAIL Boating holidays aren’t just for seasoned sailors these days, so why not discover your own adventure aboard the water?
O
nce seen as a strictly adult getaway for glamorous couples and their equally fashionable friends, setting sail en famille is becoming easier than ever, with more and more family holiday specialists adding it to their portfolios. And it comes as no surprise, as there’s bucket-loads of fun to be had on and off the water, from upbeat island hopping onboard a luxury yacht, to kitesurfing and beach parties. You may even decide to buddy up with another family and hop onboard a flotilla, where a group of yachts sail together. While away the hours as you soak up the luxury surroundings of your own yacht, taking comfort from the fact your flotilla skipper will ensure you don’t drift into troubled water.
Now, which direction? Different companies offer different routes, so it’s important to do your research, and keep in mind new routes are being added all the time. Typically flotillas sail around the Caribbean, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Mallorca, France and Turkey. Wherever you go, expect relaxed social settings, vibrant beach barbecues, warm water with ample swimming and snorkeling time, and plenty of newfound friends. If you find that you want more freedom, bareboat charter sailing – whereby no crew or provisions are included – may be more your style. Or perhaps a grander option, such as a family cruise, could be just the ticket. For something closer to home, bob along on a rented barge on the UK’s picturesque canals. The world really is your oyster!

SURF Wave goodbye to lazy beach days and make waves on a thrilling family trip to the coast
H
ave your children reached an age where they want to trade sandcastles for surfing sessions? If you have a real water baby on your hands, a surfing holiday may be just the ticket. Each child is different, but generally speaking, those aged around seven or eight are usually ready to embrace the ocean. Unless you’re a surfing pro yourself, be sure to check them into surf school or organise private lessons – the sea has so much to offer but, of course, safety is paramount. Before you pack your passport, you may want to consider a coastal adventure closer to home. Cornwall has a plethora of beaches for surfing opportunists, plus a multitude of great surf schools. Britain’s very own ‘Surf City’, Newquay, has been attracting thrillseekers for
more than 80 years, with Fistral Beach coined as the birthplace of the British surf scene. If you want guaranteed sunshine, ripcurling waves and a short-haul flight, Portugal makes a brilliant destination for a family surf holiday. Try to visit during the summer months, when the waves are much calmer for beginners. For a safe place to start, and home to some of Portugal’s most consistent surf beaches and schools, try Peniche – around 50 miles north of Lisbon – or Ericeira, also located on the western coast. If you want to travel outside of Europe there are many options further afield, too. Morocco’s Atlantic coast, Taghazout, has become quite the family surf spot with a number of brilliant beaches, or head to the vibrant Punta Mita in Mexico.

ravelling in clans is on the rise. According to The Telegraph, more than 18 per cent of us have been on a ‘3G’ – three generations – holiday in the last year. While spending time with loved ones is the main reason for such a trip, it’s not all about family bonding. An eighth of those surveyed stated that shared childcare and the fact another member of family pays for the trip were key motivators – something most exhausted and financially-squeezed parents can relate to. Whatever the incentive, carefully choosing where to stay and what to do for this kind of holiday is a game-changer. Here are a few options catering to everyone, from toddlers to grandparents…
WHY HOUSE, SRI LANKA For a family beach holiday
When it comes to long-haul sunshine for the whole family, Sally & Alice Travel Co. recommends Sri Lanka. Why House is a chic, nine-bedroom hotel surrounded by jungle and paddy fields. Just outside Mihiripenna, it’s a five-minute tuk-tuk ride from some of Sri Lanka’s most kid-friendly beaches. What makes this property perfect for large families is the many accommodation options. Besides the hotel, the Garden House can sleep up to 10, and the two cosy cabanas are the perfect hideaway for teens or grandparents. sallyandalice.com/sri-lanka

SKI TALINI, THREE VALLEYS, FRANCE For a bespoke chalet trip
With the prospect of lugging multiple family members’ skis and boots across a snowy resort several times a day, finding a slick family-orientated operator for your ski holiday is essential. Logistics aside, skiing is a wonderful group activity – especially if you find a resort where everyone can dip in and out of a range of mountainside activities in their own time, coming back together for lunches and cosy dinners. From hot tubs and cinema dens to private chefs, and with three chalets each sleeping 10 to 13 people, Ski Talini goes the extra mile. skitalini.co.uk

SABI SABI BUSH LODGE, SOUTH AFRICA For safari sunsets
South Africa is a top pick when it comes to family travel and while Kruger is one of the best-known game reserves there, privately run Sabi Sands benefits from far less tourist traffic. Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge offers larger families a luxury home with wildlife on your doorstep, private plunge pools, vast living areas and fresh buffets for every meal. Between daily game drives, kids can get stuck into bushcraft activities at the EleFun Centre for four to 12 year olds, and there’s plenty of time and space to soak up the sunsets or gaze at the stars as one big heap. sabisabi.com
LEAVE THE SQUABBLES AT HOME… • Choose digs with plenty of nooks and crannies, so everyone can find space when they need it. • Activities on tap removes the potential trauma of group decision-making. • Booking somewhere that offers help with domestic duties makes the trip feel more like a holiday for everyone. • Take turns doing things like watching the kids’ tea or escorting them to the beach. • Build in downtime for everyone; tiredness can put pressure on communal living.

WILDERNESS SCOTLAND For treasure hunt adventures
Wilderness Scotland has designed an actionpacked holiday inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, which was written in the Cairngorms in 1881. It visits both the west coast and the Cairngorms National Park, and combines guided activities including sea kayaking, a bike ride to Fort William, a mountain bike trip through ancient pine forests, and canoeing along the Great Glen. Accommodation is in two family guesthouses and the finale of the week is a Geocaching treasure hunt. wildernessscotland.com

VILLA ALCALDE, LANZAROTE
As wonderful as piling into a country pad for the weekend is, it isn’t always as relaxing as a hotel. Thankfully, Bruern Cottages offers the best of both worlds with tastefully converted cottages spread across pretty gardens, with all the facilities of a hotel. Besides the indoor pool and spa, Bruern prides itself on being a ‘paradise for children’ with play cabins, bikes, a games room and more. Weir House has its own croquet lawn, while two of the houses can accommodate up to 30 for dinner, so there’s plenty of space for communal feasting. bruern-holiday-cottages.co.uk
For unrelenting sunshine Lanzarote’s lunar landscape, white-washed villages and beaches make it a top spot for sun and relaxation with adventure on the doorstep. Boutique accommodation website i-escape recommends the seven-bedroom Villa Alcalde on the edge of rural Màcher. With a pool, gardens, barbecue area and table tennis, there’s plenty onsite to keep everyone entertained. And 30 minutes from the villa, there’s the chance to explore the volcanoes of Timanfaya National Park, the sandy coves of Papagayo and the pools of Jameos del Agua. i-escape.com/villa-alcalde

I love the mini military-style jackets from Stella McCartney, a designer we know Meghan is a fan of – and my top guess for her wedding dress.” “Meghan has already expressed her desire to wear something simple and classy,” adds designer Stephanie Staub of Little Eglantine, who designed the flowergirl dresses and page boy outfits for Prince Félix and Princess Claire of Luxembourg. “So, she might wish to add that same modern twist to her party’s outfits. I can see Princess Charlotte in a high-waisted taffeta dress, with a modern boat neckline and transparent silk organza puff sleeves.” L

Sticking with a primary palette of red, yellow, blue and green – the colours most associated with classic Lego bricks – you can add a number of inspired touches to your party. Dress the walls with homemade Lego bunting (try using coloured card stock and a circle cutter – a handy item for this particular theme, you’ll find), hang a Lego piñata and fill the room with themed balloons. You can also find various free, downloadable printables online for banners, invitations and party hats. When it comes to decorating your tables, this is where you can really have lots of fun. Draw Lego figure faces on yellow paper cups using a black marker pen; get creative by making your own cutlery or straw holders
using Lego bricks, and display finger foods like pretzels or chocolates in homemade brickthemed dishes, which you can craft from cardboard tissue boxes covered in coloured paper and dotted with plastic cups. Of course, don’t forget to theme your treats too, try slicing up finger sandwiches to look like Lego bricks, shop around for themed cake pops, and drop Lego-brick ice cubes in your little ones’ drinks, which you can make using themed ice cube moulds. Lastly, keep the children entertained with their own art station. Cut out yellow card stock Lego man figures and place on a table with lots of coloured pens, buttons, coloured card shapes and glue, and let them decorate their own mini figure. Alternatively, dig out your box of bricks and encourage them to build their own Lego robot in teams, with prizes for the most creative! L

LEONORA BAMFORD AND NANNY ANITA SHARE THEIR FAVOURITE SPRING ACTIVITIES AND DAYS OUT
S
pring, for me, is a time for outdoor adventures. The mornings are lighter, and we finally have a bit more time for fun after school. We’ve been cooking a lot over the winter and have many new recipes under our belts, but now it’s getting warmer, the children are seriously into making frozen lollipops. I think it’s been our staple pudding at the moment! This recipe is brilliant because you can use any fruit, but right now I can’t get enough of the rhubarb I’ve been growing in our garden. Even my little one, who’s weaning, has mini versions made in ice cube trays. When we’re out and about over Easter, I never leave home without a Nanny Anita ‘busy bag’ and this treasure map craft is just the ticket for flights. Nanny Anita’s also been teaching us how to make thumb-print Easter eggs, which we’ll be using for an exciting Easter egg hunt in the garden. Happy holidays! L

Remove from the heat. • Put a sieve over a large bowl and
push the rhubarb through using a wooden spoon. • Mix 200ml of the rhubarb liquid with 2 tbsp of yogurt and leave to cool. • Pour the mixture into ice lolly moulds and freeze. • For stripy lollies, layer the rhubarb, then yogurt, and then rhubarb again. Keep going until you’re at the top of the mould. • When frozen, run the outside of the mould under warm water to remove and serve immediately.
If you’re staying home this Easter and love the look of our treasure map craft, why not take the family on a trip to the Cutty Sark in Greenwich for your own pirate adventure? Little ones can take the helm at the ship’s wheel, climb into the crew’s bunk beds and meet characters from the past to learn about life at sea. OUR CHILDREN’S TEETH ARE A CONCERN FOR US ALL. ARE THEY BRUSHING ENOUGH? IS THUMB-SUCKING REALLY THE END OF THE WORLD? AND WHAT ABOUT BRACES? GEORGINA BLASKEY FINDS OUT
Tooth decay is a major health concern worldwide and still a big problem in the UK – it’s one of the most common causes of hospital admission in children, with sports drinks and sweets being the big culprits. To help prevent tooth decay, fissure sealant is recommended. “On permanent molars (from about age seven or eight), we can paint on a small amount of fluoride inside the fissure which seals the tooth and protects it from food and bacteria,” says Marie Baldo, dental associate at Glow Dental in Battersea. This must be done early, on healthy teeth only – there are more cases of tooth decay starting inside teeth so an X-ray may be advisable to check for cavities first.
TRAUMA Chipping or breaking a tooth is quite common amongst young children who are so active playing sport and love to whizz around on scooters. If your child fractures or breaks their tooth, Dr Neil Counihan, one of the UK’s leading orthodontists and founder of Metamorphosis Orthodontics in Fulham, has this advice: “If the tooth is chipped, find the fragment and get to the dentist – it may be the fragment is embedded in the lower lip. If the tooth has moved, gently manipulate to move it back if you can, then visit the dentist, orthodontist or A&E. If it has been knocked out, put the tooth back in their mouth or in your own mouth until you get to the dentist. If you get there within a couple of hours, there’s a good chance the tooth will survive.”
THUMB-SUCKING Once your child is over six, this habit needs to stop as it can have a significant detrimental
affect to the face. “It turns the U-shaped jaw into a V-shape,” explains Dr Counihan. This can lead to a permanent bite issue. “I suggest a habit breaker (a fixed appliance) to help them stop once and for all.”
GAPPY TEETH This is a frequent problem between the central incisors in the upper jaw, and often the gap will close by itself as canines come down. But there are common causes, such as: • Smaller teeth can cause a gappy smile – this could be hereditary. • A fleshy frenulum (the ‘fleshy’ tissue flap above the front teeth). • Missing teeth. While in very rare circumstances the frenulum can be removed, generally gaps close by themselves or a permanent wire (a lateral retainer) may be used.
WHITE SPOTS These can be caused by illness, by enamel being formed irregularly or trauma on a baby tooth which has left a scar on a permanent tooth. Grey-looking teeth might occur after very long-term antibiotic use. Glow Dental offers a microinvasive treatment called iCon. “We use a solution to make micro holes on the white spots, then we spread on a gel, which fills the holes and disguises the spot,” Marie explains. “It all depends on how deep the lesion is, but it is most effective on superficial spots.”
BRACES Often seeking advice early can improve results, shorten treatment time and reduce costs. “There’s an old-fashioned belief that 78
you need to wait until all adult teeth are present before you can start treatment,” says Dr Counihan. “Inceptive treatments can stop trauma and fractures by bringing incisors inside the lower lip, resolve cross bites more easily and set everything up to grow properly.” There are different types of braces for different ages and issues, says Amina Abdel-Karim, orthodontist at Glow Dental. FUNCTIONAL: “An example is the twin block, removable brace used to encourage growth of the lower jaw and close a gap down, usually suitable for boys age 11 to 12 and girls age 10 to 11.” INTERCEPTIVE ORTHODONTICS: “This removable brace is used from an early age, eight to 10, for issues such as a top incisor that needs straightening or a cross bite.” FIXED: “With this brace you can move teeth individually in all directions on all four planes,” explains Amina. “It’s the only method that achieves perfect teeth and is best for permanent teeth, for crowding or for complex problems, from 12 years and up.” L LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

A CLOSED BOOK The digital device battle has never been so high, GEORGINA FULLER delves into the importance of reading to your children
C
hildren are, as the author Emilie Buchwald famously said, made readers on the laps of their parents. But with one in three families now consisting of two parents working full-time, the onset of the digital age and the pressures of homework and afterschool clubs, reading to our children seems to have slipped down our never-ending list of priorities. One in five parents do not spend any time reading with children and a third do not think their children read enough books, according to a recent report. The study of 450
LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK
parents, by Book People and YouGov, found that around half of those with children aged between five and 11 spend less than one hour a week reading to their kids. The study also revealed that almost six in 10 (57 per cent) of us use a tablet, mobile, TV or film to distract our child but only one in 10 of us use a book. Claudia Winkleman, presenter and ambassador of Book People’s Bedtime Story Competition, said she does everything she can to try and encourage her three children to read. “I always try and get my kids off a screen and I love them reading books,” she

says. “I said to them quite recently, ‘guys, you know what, even if you’re just pretending, if I could walk into the kitchen and maybe you’re all just lounging around and you’re all just sitting there reading a book, I would give you whatever you wanted.’” Dr Genevieve Von Lob, clinical psychologist, parenting expert and author of Five Deep Breaths: The Power of Mindful Parenting, says that gadgets and electronic devices have eclipsed books in many homes. “Electronic devices, smart phones, TV and tablets are now competing for everyone’s attention and are distracting us from sitting

BEST BOOKS FOR CHILDREN WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE down together with our children and reading to them,” she notes. It also comes down to how much importance the parent places on reading and books. “Many may not value reading as much as other activities and are not convinced of the benefits so it is not a priority,” says Dr Von Lob. “Some parents may have stopped reading aloud to their children because they consider their children old enough to read for themselves, or some simply don’t have the confidence in their own reading skills.” Carolyn Clarke, head of educational development at The Children’s Literacy Charity, says, however, that reading with and to your children can make a huge difference to both the parent and their child. “Sometimes as parents it can feel like you have to work flat out just to fit everything in,” she notes. “But research shows that reading with young children is the single most important thing you can do to help your child’s education.” Creating a regular ‘special time’ to read with your child can, says Clarke, help introduce them to a magical world, teach them about empathy and help you bond with your child as they know they will have your undivided attention. Dr Von Lob believes that reading to your children each night can also help foster a good sleep routine as it shows them how to slow down and relax at the end of the day.

“The sensations of being held by their parents and hearing their voice helps that child’s brain development and feelings of trust and safety,” she says. “In years to come, your children will tend to remember how they felt when they were with you, and not what you gave them materially.” So how can we, as busy parents, make reading more of a priority, especially if we have more than one child? Firstly, make sure you switch off the TV and put down your digital devices, says Dr Vob Lob. “Take the opportunity to prioritise reading over your household chores or putting up your feet in front of the TV for just a few minutes and you will not regret it,” she notes. Try to also keep it light and fun, says Clarke. “Children love it when their parents play with them and praise them. If you have fun and enjoy reading stories, then chances are your child will too. Younger children can have a short attention span so little-but-often might be the best way to keep them motivated and enthusiastic,” she notes. If books aren’t grabbing their attention, then Clarke suggests going online and reading or printing off a web page that interests them or looking at other ways to engage them. “Every day there are lots of opportunities for you to encourage your child to get reading,” she notes. “You could carry a book or magazine in your bag to share when you’re out and about or encourage them to read traffic signs, adverts, cereal packets, simple news headlines and film reviews.” Part of the problem, says Julie Fulton, author of a number of children’s books including Tabitha Posy Was Ever So Nosy, is that reading often becomes a chore rather than a pleasure when children start school. “I know it can be a battle for some parents to get their children to read and that it’s becoming increasingly difficult with all the pressures of homework and longer working hours,” she notes. “But just a few pages a night can make all the difference.” Dr Von Lob says we should try to see reading as something for both the parent and the child to enjoy. “Children grow up so fast and this time is precious,” she notes. “Reading with your children may bring unexpected benefits as it helps you to slow down, relax and connect with them and your imagination.” L LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Mr Lewis hopes to inspire pupils by incorporating more STEAM into science lessons
MEET THE HEAD
The White House School
We chat to new head TON Y LEWIS at the South West London co-educational prep You joined the school in September 2017, how’s the journey been so far?
It’s a great school with a wonderful ethos, the children are happy and doing extremely well, so there has been every reason to have enjoyed the journey. What are you looking to introduce to the school?
We are extremely positive in our management of the children, which encourages them to take risks. Consequently they make mistakes and we enable them to learn from these because of the confidence they gain by having a go. We promote a view of learning that goes well beyond the curriculum, and it’s exactly what you would wish of an environment in which children can and do learn effectively. My ambition is to build on this, and there are specific areas to which we will apply this ethos with greater determination – for
example, developing Science into STEM and STEAM. Already we build a car each year and race it, we enjoy Science Week and Science Club, and our ICT is driving forward with coding, so there are some exciting aspects present, but we can do more.
Does The White House School offer any extracurricular activities?
Clubs before and after school, and at lunchtime (including my chess club and a new yoga and mindfulness experience) extend our vibrant arts, music, drama and sports programmes, which are as important to us as our academics. We want to offer children the best opportunities to develop their interests, as well as discover new passions.
How do you ensure every pupil achieves their full potential?
Our teachers are excellent and they care deeply – teachers really do make a difference. Our curriculum is designed to stretch, challenge and stimulate, and we monitor this on a day-today basis (having small classes helps enormously) and with more formal assessments each half term. Our children view our assessments as a challenge because they know they help us to help them, which re-enforces the idea of learning from mistakes, and our children feel fully encouraged to have a go!
How do you nurture the transition from your Kindergarten to Prep?
Most of our Reception children move up naturally from our two nurseries and there is a healthy blend with children new to the school. We have a wonderful family feel and we encourage our children to behave in this way so, regardless of any formal introductions, the attitude is incredibly supportive of those
88
new to the school. In the summer we run a trip combining our PreReception with our Reception, which further enhances the transition. We have opportunities before starting where new children and their parents are invited to spend time in their new environment and this helps to mellow any anxieties. Often these experiences serve to excite children about their new situation, too – they love the more ‘grown-up’ feel. What’s in the pipeline for the rest of the year?
Outward-bound residentials, a trip to Normandy, school plays, music competitions, swimming galas, building and racing a car for Goodwood, spring assembly in our local church, Science Week, Sports Day, Easter egg hunts – the list goes on, all liberally punctuated with some seriously enjoyable learning! The school’s philosophy is to inspire in its pupils a love of music, movement and freedom of expression. The classes are professional, all accompanied by pianists and taught by qualified staff. THE BUSINESS Harriet Jones founder of
ROCKAHULA KIDS The creative director talks family life, business goals and her passion for design Why did you set up Rockahula Kids?
I have been in retail all of my working life – it’s definitely in my blood. From university I went on to work for a few large high street brands, starting as a buyer’s assistant to running the kids’ department at an international retailer – it was here I discovered that working with children’s products was my perfect fit. After having my first child, Jesse [now eight], I struggled to find a balance that enabled me to look after my little boy and also work. I had always dreamed of running my own business, so after having another baby boy [Luca, six], I decided to take the leap. What sparked your passion for children’s accessories?
Children express their individuality without inhibition and there is so much scope to be
creative with kids’ accessories – anything goes! I love anything quirky, cute or kitsch, so it suits me down to the ground. Describe a typical day for you.
As in most working households, it has to be planned with military precision and can be thrown off balance by the smallest thing! I do the morning school run three days a week, after which I race to the office, which is in the same town we live in. I pick the children up from their after-school club and get them home for tea and bed. On Thursdays and Fridays my husband does the school run so I tend to go in early and work a little later, but I’ll always aim to be back for bedtime. What’s the best thing about your job?
Having a sense of fulfilment from my work is very valuable to me. I feel lucky to be doing something I truly enjoy. I also like the fact that my children can get involved in my work life a little bit – they are my guinea pigs for testing new products and they often come up with their own designs. What’s been your proudest moment?
To have got to this point with Rockahula Kids, where I’m able to work on my own terms in a The brand is known for its cool and kitsch retro designs
company that I built up from scratch feels like something to be proud of, and thankful for. What advice would you give to others wanting to launch their own brand?
The most important starting point is to have a clear vision that you really believe in – if you are passionate about your brand then other people will be too. Also, be prepared to make mistakes, learn from them and move on. What can we expect from Rockahula Kids in the next 12 months?
We have a number of brand collaborations coming up for next season and beyond, so watch this space! Long term, as the company grows, I would also like to focus on doing things a bit differently behind the scenes, and work out how we can make positive differences by running the business in a more thoughtful way. For example, right now we are aiming to make the business 95 per cent free from plastic packaging. I was feeling more and more uncomfortable with the increasing quantities of plastic bags being used to ship our goods, so have made the switch to paper. It hasn’t been without its teething problems but we’re well on the way to phasing out plastic, and our stockists have been amazingly positive about it. L rockahulakids.com
