EDITOR’S LETTER

S

pring. Even just saying the word makes me feel better. Coat battles with my three-year-old are over, the frantic search for gloves before school is no more and my hitherto caged animals have been released back into the wild (or Ravenscourt Park, rather) for idyllic afternoon adventures, sporting endeavours and picnics. Life is good again. London is at its very best at this time of year, and to celebrate the capital we’re showcasing the new season’s coolest childrenswear against the backdrop of some of the city’s most iconic sites (p.36). If that isn’t enough to put a spring in everyone’s step, our gym shoot (p.50), colourful shopping pages (p.23) and focus on monochrome interiors (p.72) will offer lots more inspiration for little wardrobes and spaces. Having grown up on a farm in Cornwall, I love the great outdoors more than most – but possibly not quite as much as British adventurer Bear Grylls (p.34). This issue, we’re lucky enough to speak to the survival guru, who tells us about his academy and how vital it is to get kids outside. It’s certainly a necessity if you live in London and have five children between the ages of three and seven, as the inspiring 5

Celia Muñoz confirmed when we met up to talk about her Spanish childrenswear brand, La Coqueta (p.46). During the shoot, all five children were so unbelievably cooperative that I ended up asking Celia for parenting tips. She is definitely not one to fall into the vicious bribe-threat cycle that catches out most parents. Don’t worry if you have, though, because we’ve got seven expert strategies to help you avoid the trap (p.68). We also look at how to deal with food allergies and intolerances (p.81), which affect most families in some way or other these days, and get a first-hand account from Marina Fogle on how the Headspace app helped her through the grieving process (p.62). Finally, there is our regular round-up of the best things to see and do this spring (p.105), so you and your family can make the most of the best city in the world. Whatever you do, though, make sure you join us at Hamleys, where we’ll have exclusive run of the place for one morning only (p.19). See you there!

Chelsea, London.

I love the change in weather, all the beautiful flowers and taking my kids out walking, hunting for insects and signs of new life. We’re mad about lambing and they adore feeding them with bottles.

From the age of two, I was never seen without hat, gloves and a handbag. My parents used to refer to them as my props!

What’s your first fashion memory?

You have four kids. What’s the best thing about having a big family?

Colour! It’s great to finally say goodbye to dark, wintry clothes and welcome bright and beautiful outfits.

As the fourth of five children, I love that there is always a party, and you always have people helping you out. Right now, my children are too young for our family to be anything but chaos, but I'm hoping they’ll enjoy all the best things about big families in a few years’ time.

I love to go to the V&A with my daughter, Lily. It’s such a beautiful place packed with costumes, textiles and jewellery.

Skiing. When I was seven, my mum sent me out with my sisters and their gang of friends, who were all students in their early twenties. I joined in their drinking games with Ribena.

INTERVIEW

MY LITTLE LONDON

MYLEENE KLASS WE CHAT TO THE CLASSICAL MUSICIAN, FASHION DESIGNER AND MODEL ABOUT LIFE IN THE CAPITAL WITH HER TWO DAUGHTERS, HERO AND AVA Myleene's Baby K for Mothercare collection has grown in size for SS16

eight years. It’s exciting to see that for spring and summer 2016 we now have nursery furniture, buggies and bags, as well as babygrows, dresses and cute pieces like the mini bomber jacket. We also have a range of new accessories. I have two little muses who inspire me every day, as well as four godsons to help me with the boys’ department.

What do you love most about London?

Everything. The people, the vibrancy, and ultimately, the fact it never sleeps (which is just as well, as neither do I!). I love living in the capital. There’s so much you can take for granted though, and when I have guests staying from abroad, I do find myself remembering just how incredible our city is when I take them out and about. What’s the best way to spend a beautiful spring day in London?

Find a park or head to the Embankment, where there’s always something going on. Where are your girls’ favourite spots?

My babies love to go to the zoo in Regent’s Park or the aquarium, so we spend a lot of time there. They also love driving over Waterloo Bridge and seeing the lights over the Thames, so we do that a lot. And your favourite place to go for some me-time?

My bed.

PHOTOGRAPHY: INSTAGRAM/MYLEENEKLASS

When you get chance, where do you go to escape the city?

I feel so at home in London that I don’t ever feel the need to escape it. I try to spoil my girls with cultural experiences rather than materialistic things, so our holidays in the sun when it’s cold are probably the best escape, but we always look forward to coming home. With two girls, your fashion lines and a modeling career, how do you balance work and family time?

I have never been so organised in my life! I make sure that I go through my girls’ school LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

diary before I book certain jobs so I can be there for plays, parents’ evening and sports day. Saying that, as a single working mum, it can be very hard to stretch myself, and I find my sleep takes the biggest toll. In your opinion, what’s the best thing about being a mother?

That I never knew love like it until having my babies. I think that watching my girls grow into little people, and seeing and learning who they are is the greatest privilege. And the biggest challenge?

Time management is always tough as all it takes is one of them to get a cold or forget their PE kit or some other unforeseen circumstance to throw the whole balance out. Saying that, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I also have realised that I don’t know the answers to very much, including, “How many raindrops fall when it rains?” and “Is Pluto sad it’s not a planet anymore?” What advice would you give to other mothers?

That you know best. What can we expect from your latest Baby K range at Mothercare?

Baby K has grown so much over the past 29

Do you have a favourite piece?

It’s always a tutu skirt and the leather biker jacket. When not dressing your girls in clothes from your range, where else do you go to dress them?

I don’t! Baby K has grown in size and now goes up to age eight, so both girls still wear it. And when creating your Littlewoods line, what do you do for inspiration?

I think about what I need from my clothes and what I’d feel good in, and go from there. You’re a very talented musician, are your girls into music and performance, too?

They love to sing. We always have car karaoke or kitchen karaoke where we grab wooden spoons, turn the music up and dance around. I encourage them to play the piano, too, as it’s such a diverse instrument and something we can do together. If, however, they stop enjoying playing at any point, then that’s fine by me. Whatever makes them happy, I say. Have you any exciting plans you can share with us?

There are so many new things happening this year – watch this space! L

SURVIVAL GURU BEAR GRYLLS TELLS LIANNE KOLIRIN ABOUT FAMILY LIFE, HIS LOVE OF THE SCOUTS AND WHY HE’S PASSIONATE ABOUT GETTING KIDS OUTSIDE

B

ear Grylls may be Britain’s most high-profile adventurer and survivalist, but to three young boys he is simply known as ‘Dad’. So impressed are we all by the former SAS soldier’s bravery and sheer determination in the face of Mother Nature, that it’s easy to forget that he is also a family man. Jesse, 12, Marmaduke, nine, and Huckleberry, six, are all “incredible boys with contagious spirits”, according to their proud father. In recent years, Bear has famously taken the likes of Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet and even US President Barack Obama beyond their comfort zones for his TV show Running Wild with Bear Grylls. But lesser known, perhaps, is his tireless work for the younger generation. He has led expeditions from Antarctica to the Arctic, which have raised £2 million for children worldwide; his extensive TV portfolio includes CITV’s The Bear Grylls Survival School for 12 to 15 year olds; and he has written several novels for children, as well as a non-fiction book entitled To My Sons: Lessons for the Wild Adventure Called Life. In 2009, he was appointed the youngest

ever Chief Scout to over half a million scouts in the UK, an accomplishment of which he is fiercely proud. “Being named Chief Scout was one of the greatest honours in my life,” he says. “And the most unbelievable privilege to be part of such an inspiring force for good.” His earliest scouting memory is of feeling very small, surrounded by all the other scouts who had so many badges. “But I learnt that it isn’t all about badges,” he explains. “It’s about camaraderie and learning great life and outdoor skills. You don’t have to know it all, you just have to show up and give your all.” His main goal as Chief Scout is to encourage those who might not normally get the chance, to get out there and build their own adventures. “The scouts does that like no other youth organisation, and it inspires great life values and lifelong friendships.” Getting kids outdoors is vital, he says, wherever they live. “Something special happens to us all when we step out into the open and are presented with a challenge.” And he’s a big believer in having adventures as a family, too: “The best thing we can do for our children is have an adventure with them – even if it is just camping or going for a hike. It brings us close to our children in a way that computer games and TV robs people of.” Unlike many, he certainly practices what he preaches. “We often go to our little island in Wales,” he says. “It’s a wild, windswept, rocky grass-covered island only about 700m long and 200m wide, and we live in the converted lighthouse keeper’s cottage. We have no mains electricity or water, but we love it. Our three boys, Shara and I are happier there than anywhere else on earth – adventure and solitude mixed with fun and family.” Not having your own island is no excuse to stay indoors, though. “Even a walk in the park or cycle ride can show children that there’s so 34

much more to life than TV screens,” he says. For those looking for something more challenging, Bear has created the Bear Grylls Survival Academy, where a team of trained experts, recruited by Bear himself, teach a variety of courses for families and children. The academy’s Kids Survival Day Courses encourage youngsters aged eight to 13 to get back to basics. It also runs holiday camps and brilliant birthday parties. And sessions are available for adults, as well as family groups. “People learn everything from rappelling to self-defence, non-GPS navigation to river crossings and fire-lighting,” explains Bear. “It’s a real variety that equips participants for any situations they may face. But, above all, it builds the sort of quiet confidence that comes from knowing you are able to look after yourself or your family in an emergency.” He adds, “The outdoors gives kids a confidence and pride that money cannot buy. Children who get to spend their afternoons running about and playing games sleep better, concentrate harder and work better with each other.” Case closed. L beargryllssurvivalacademy.com

LA COQUETA FOUNDER CELIA MUÑOZ TELLS SUSANNAH WARREN ABOUT HER ELEGANT SPANISH CHILDRENSWEAR BRAND AND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A WORKING MOTHER OF FIVE

A

PHOTOGRAPHY: HELENE SANDBERG

s I arrive at the La Coqueta shop in Hampstead, Celia Muñoz is breezing around trying to dress her five children for our shoot. It’s cold and dark outside, and the kids have come straight from a long day at school. It should have disaster written all over it, yet everyone is full of the joys, telling each other excitedly about their day and cracking jokes. The party of five, ranging from three to seven years old, is immaculately behaved throughout (with only the promise of a packet of Pom-Bears at the end) while I simply look on, wondering how on earth this woman does it. Superhuman powers, perhaps? “There’s very little that we leave to surprise,” she explains. “It’s all about routine. I’m extremely organised, very productive. From the moment we wake up, we’re essentially on a schedule. We always eat at the same time. We cook enough food once a month for the whole month. We focus a lot on spending quality time together and I do have help in the evenings.” Born to a French mother and Spanish father, Celia grew up in Granada with four siblings and a huge extended family. “I spent eternal summers at my grandparents’ house surrounded by children my age.” The original plan was to have an even bigger family. On an early date with her now

husband, Caspar, a Dutchman, they started talking about children. “We exchanged little papers and put a number on it – we both wrote six! We have five, and La Coqueta is number six.” Her sixth ‘baby’ came about due to her love affair with Spanish children’s fashion. “The Spanish love dressing their children and there is a beautiful craftsmanship behind it. I thought it was a great business idea.” After doing a Masters in mental health while pregnant with baby number three, she was all set to do a PhD, but changed tack to follow her dream of opening a shop. She did hours of research to see it if was viable and worked out an “affordable luxury” concept that allowed her to sell a whole look. She says of her designs, which are “proudly made in Spain” and sold online across the globe: “They’re beautiful, practical, durable and understated. The price point is very good, and the clothes are machine washable.” Unsurprisingly, it’s her own children who influence the design process. “Each collection always starts with me falling in love with fabrics or textures that I see [in Spain] that will work on the children. All my children are different shapes and sizes – it’s extremely useful. I always have them in mind when I design. And I ask them, ‘What would you like Mummy to bring this season?’.”

Her daughters are obsessed with pink, which explains why this season’s collection features so much of it. “It’s the mood of the collection.” Mint greens, checks and florals also feature strongly. And she has launched La Coqueta’s first special occasion wear for SS16, too, motivated by the fact that daughter Flavia is about to have her first communion and “needed something to wear”. Despite being inspired by her children, Celia says those who guide her most are her customers. “I’m very close to them. I speak to them daily through social media and in the shop. It’s very interactive. We get it right 95% of the time, but if we don’t get it right, they tell us, and they know that we have tried our

and ensures they are all made to feel special. “Our main challenge is to make every child feel important. The only time we have to do that is when they go to bed, so generally I take one at a time to bed and I spend 15 minutes with them reading or having a chat.” Her parenting style is, she says, quite French. “I was raised French. It’s about discipline, but in a warm way. We’re quite structured, very loving, we’re very focused on the children, but also on making sure the children know their parents are also people and we need our space.” That ‘space’ involves the couple going out to a different restaurant every Friday night together without fail. “My husband and

And the designer identifies strongly with her. “She’s loud, passionate, quite direct, very temperamental and controls herself little – just like me!” Next comes Lucas, six, who’s “reserved, like his dad”; Siena, five, “a little gem”; Bosco, four, “the funny one”, and finally, three-year-old Hugo, who is “quite cheeky and knows all the shortcuts.” She is effusive when talking about them

Thriving global business: check. Being this brilliant in every department of her life – and against the odds – could prove galling to lesser persons, but Celia Muñoz is so charming and honest that you’ve just got to admire her. I certainly do. L

WELLBEING

TAKING TIME OUT MARINA FOGLE REVEALS HOW A MEDITATION APP HELPED HER COPE WITH THE GRIEF SHE FELT FOR HER STILLBORN SON

O

ver the last few years, the term ‘mindfulness’ has become something of a buzzword. While I could appreciate that being mindful was probably not a bad idea, I didn’t have the time to think about what it really meant and whether it could, as was claimed, significantly enhance our lives. But in the summer of 2014, it all changed for me. My son was stillborn, suddenly and tragically one August morning, and immediately my brain was tested like it had never been before. In the months that followed, lost and overwhelmed, I got to know stress, panic and anxiety very well. And amid the deluge of advice was a suggestion that I download an app called Headspace. My friend, who had lost his brother some years ago, said that spending 10 minutes a day in guided meditation made him feel infinitely stronger, calmer and clear-headed. Because I didn’t download it straight away, it remained on that list of things ‘I’ll do tomorrow’. The weeks went on, and the relentless carousel of questions, concerns and fears that had permeated my mind suddenly rose to a crescendo that was hard to ignore. I found myself getting stressed and losing my temper, with my children, my dogs, myself. My acupuncturist told me to slow down. “You need to take a few minutes every day, just to stop,” she said. But I couldn’t. I was terrified of stopping, because every time I did, the horror of that day tortured me. My solution was distraction; endless nights whiled away listening to Radio 4, car journeys on the phone, box sets for evenings in, Facebook for the three-minute wait for the tube. I knew that this was a classic manifestation of grief, but I also realised that I couldn’t live 62

like this. Not only was it exhausting, but I wasn’t happy, and I had good reason to be happy. My youngest had died, but I still had Ludo and Iona, who at four and six years old are at the stage where they delight in all life’s rich detail; the bird poo on the windscreen, the treasure trove of blackberries in our park, their new Tractor Ted wellies. My loss had taught me that each day is precious and I didn’t want to waste months riding out this stress, I wanted to savour each minute of life. So one evening, as I checked my emails in bed, I downloaded the Headspace app and started ‘Take Ten’, the free 10 minutes over 10 days trial, acquainting myself with

to a cacophony had quietened. By day five, I realised I hadn’t lost my temper once. On day eight, I found myself in a situation that the previous week had made me feel extremely stressed. I had even woken the previous night, panicking in anticipation of my panic, so I decided to take my 10 minutes just beforehand. As I sat down, I could feel the anxiety flooding my body. But when I switched the app on, my breathing slowed and I managed to navigate the situation without the anxiety I had experienced before. When my trial was up, I didn’t hesitate to pay the subscription to sign up for the next stage – the last 10 days had had such a

I didn’t want to waste months riding out this stress, I wanted to savour life meditation in the hope it might help. The meditation is narrated by Andy, a man with a soothing voice that is – quite remarkably – not annoying. As your 10 minutes start, you are told what to focus on. I’m not into meditation, yoga or my ‘inner self ’ at all. Sitting for 10 minutes doing nothing is totally foreign to me. As I lay in my bed, I did wonder whether this hocuspocus really could work. But as the days progressed and I kept my promise to give it a go, I started noticing small changes. While I meditated, my mind wandered and I couldn’t help thinking what a terrible meditator I must be. But after each session, I started sensing a calmness – my head felt clearer. It seemed like the background noise that had increased LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

profound effect on me, and I realised why. Being constantly occupied and distracted is not natural. But we are a generation that is always switched on, always contactable. Many of us are working mothers, but are still managing our homes and family lives the way our mothers did before us. Then along comes a concept like Headspace, an app that makes meditation convenient and achievable even for the biggest cynics. Just when we think that technology is becoming too invasive, a Bristol-born Buddhist monk-turned-tech-millionaire called Andy creates something that simplifies our lives. It’s just ironic that it’s another thing we depend on our mobiles for. L headspace.com

ME, MYSELF & I • Meditate at the same time and in the same place every day where possible. Try to find a time when your partner or a friend can watch the kids for 10 minutes, to allow yourself to enjoy that period and not feel guilty about it. • Treat yourself to some silence, whether it be in the early hours of the morning, while outside walking the dog, or for a few minutes in the car after you’ve turned off the engine. Do your best to seek out moments of quiet, even if it is only once a day. • Be mindful. You don’t need to change your routine or give up any of your precious time to be mindful. Instead, really focus on the present; be it while cleaning your teeth, or making breakfast for the kids. Think about all that is going on around you, embracing all your senses – the smell of breakfast cooking, or the chatter of your children.

The

Parent TRAP

WE ALL KNOW BRIBERY DOESN’T WORK. STOP YOURSELF FALLING INTO THE HABIT WITH INVALUABLE ADVICE FROM ELAINE HALLIGAN OF THE PARENT PRACTICE

O

ne of the biggest parenting challenges in this materialistic world is bringing up children to be appreciative and to value their possessions. We know children have so much, yet it is difficult not to spoil them at times. Many working parents say they often fall into the guilt trap and find themselves over-indulging their kids. There is almost an irresistible urge to buy them things when they respond with, “You’re the best Mummy in the world!” But this can lead children to talk about nothing but possessions, and getting them to be cooperative becomes all about: “What will I get for doing this?”. If this happens, you’ve fallen into the bribery trap and it’s a deep, dark place to get out of. The key, of course, is to not fall into the trap in the first place. As psychologist and author Dr Phil McGraw points out, “Your child does not have to love you every minute of every day. He’ll get over the disappointment of having been told ‘no’. But he won’t get over the effects of being spoiled.” So, how can you encourage good habits and cooperative behaviour in your children without bribing them? Here are seven steps to help you avoid the trap:

1

USE NON-MATERIAL REWARDS

When your child does something good, always acknowledge it with descriptive praise and point out the intrinsic benefits of the achievement, including how happy it makes you. Children want to please their parents, even though it doesn’t always seem like it. “I really love it when you do what Daddy asks you to do quickly. Now we have time for two stories!” Get creative and choose a new reward each day – a pillow fight, a torchlit indoor safari or a picnic tea under the table.

2

PRESENCE – NOT PRESENTS

The one thing children crave more than anything is time with you. In this frenetic age, it’s so easy not to make this a priority as you race from one activity to another. Treat spending time with your children as you would a meeting with an important client. You diarise it and can’t afford to be late or to miss the appointment. 68

3

REPLACE ‘IF’ WITH ‘WHEN’

Some are concerned that there is little difference between a bribe and a reward. A bribe, however, is given in advance of desired behaviour. For example: “If I let you watch TV, you must do your homework straight after.” Rewards come after the desired behaviour: “When you have completed your homework, you will have earned your TV time.” LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

FAMILY

4

Dedicated family time with your child is much more valuable to them than material rewards

5

APPRECIATE THE SMALL THINGS

“I love the way Daddy always checks with me if I need anything when he’s going to the shops – that’s really thoughtful.” “I love the way Auntie Sally makes my favourite dessert when we go there for Sunday lunch. That makes me feel cared for.” Notice when your children are appreciative and comment on it: “When you said thank you for giving you a lift to Ben’s, I felt really appreciated.”

MODEL THE BEHAVIOUR YOU WANT TO SEE

If you hanker after the latest gadget to hit the shops and queue for days to own it, you can expect your children to want to buy things, too. Remember to also talk about being grateful for what you have and the people in your lives.

Thank y ou Practice what you preach and always say thank you – little ones will follow in your footsteps

6

LET YOUR CHILD EARN PRIVILEGES FOR GOOD BEHAVIOUR

Children are much more appreciative of their screen time, toys, outings and having friends over to play if you have a system in place whereby they earn these privileges. This increases self-esteem and motivation. Can you recall how proud you felt as a child when you earned something through your own efforts?

7

Donating their old toys to local hospitals will teach your child to be generous and charitable

TEACH GRATITUDE

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

Allow your children to understand the art of being generous or charitable by donating toys to the local hospital, giving to old peoples’ homes in the form of homebaked cakes, picking up litter in the park or filling shoeboxes to send to African children through Action Aid. Consider keeping a gratitude book in which they record things which made them happy that day. L

hen it comes to designing children’s rooms, black and white is often overlooked in favour of pastel hues or bold brights. There’s no reason to fear a monochrome palette, though, or be afraid of creating a seriously stylish space for your little ones using these super-chic tones. Yes, pastels are warm, but the use of black and white needn’t be stark. The key is to vary textures through the use of cushions, rugs and lampshades, ensure any lighting is soft and warm, and only call on black to punctuate a grey and white design scheme. What’s really great about monochrome styling is that it will never date. Simple yet striking, it works as well for toddlers as it does for teens. And all you need to do is update the space with unusual, playful and age-appropriate touches to keep things looking fresh and cool. If you’re thinking of embracing the trend, you may find that you’re spoilt for choice. Here’s our edit of stand-out monochrome offerings for inspiration. L

pring is finally here and I can’t help but bounce along. Everything is bursting into life – the birds are singing, trees and flowers are coming into bloom and hibernating animals are emerging once more. At this time of year, we’re usually outside searching for new insects and early butterflies. And we’re always on the hunt for hedgehogs, frogs and toads. There are many wonderful woods in London to stroll around on the weekend. Highgate Wood is on my list this weekend, and myKidsy.com always has great ideas on where to venture. Why not let your children become mini phenologists? All they need is a pen and paper to record what they find in their very own wildlife diary. Nanny Anita has been dreaming up some brilliant arts and crafts for the whole family with easy paper kites for windier days, and paper flowers for when it’s too cold or wet to head outside. And finally, to beat those April showers, children’s label Holly & Beau has the coolest gear for changeable weather, with printed coats and brollies that magically change colour when it starts to rain. My go-to for finding the ultimate in family fun is MyKidsy. Whether you’re looking for after-school clubs, weekend fun or party inspiration, this destination website has got it covered. And it splits things into categories, ages and even specific holidays, making it a cinch to use.

You will need: Tissue paper squares • scissors • pipe cleaners • Stack six square pieces of tissue paper on top of each other neatly. • Accordion-fold them. • Wrap a pipe cleaner around the middle of it and twist to secure. • On either end, trim the edges into a shape, like a triangle or semicircle. • Then unfold each of the layers one by one to create the flower.

Place an egg per person in boiling water for five and a half minutes. Take the top off and, while you steam some asparagus, let the children draw faces on their eggs with marker pens. Then just dip the asparagus soldiers into the runny yolk and enjoy! LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

You will need: A4 paper • string • ribbon • tape • hole punch • bamboo skewer • Fold the paper in half, widthways. • Fold back one side of the flap, at an angle (like you would to make a paper plane). Turn it over and repeat on the other side. • Flatten it and tape the middle so it doesn’t open up. • Break off the spiky part of the skewer, then tape the remaining part across the top part of the kite on the front. • Turn it over and make a hole in the fold underneath – it needs to be at the top end of the kite. • Thread your string through the hole and tie it securely. • Tape some ribbons to the bottom of your kite.

Yolks are also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which is important for brain health. Unless you suffer from an egg allergy, you shouldn’t be concerned about having an abundance of eggs in your diet. Eight to 10 a week is perfectly suitable for most people. Several recent dietary studies suggest that the cholesterol content of eggs may in fact be less of a concern than previously thought. If you are concerned about your cholesterol levels, though, aim for a maximum of six each week. Here, we offer some recipes that show just how versatile and tasty eggs can be. GOLDEN VEGGIE FRITTATA

This recipe makes a perfect leisurely brunch dish for weekends and school holidays

SALMON EGGS EN COCOTTE This rich and indulgent recipe makes a perfect quick supper or a leisurely weekend brunch. Salmon is full of Omega-3, key for supporting brain function and healthy skin. Spinach is a great source of vitamin C and iron. Using asparagus spears for dipping makes a fun alternative to bread and keeps the recipe gluten-free. Makes 2 child portions or 1 adult portion.

Frittata is the ultimate speedy and versatile meal. Enjoy for breakfast, lunch or supper. Or wrap it up for a picnic on a warmer spring day. Sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamin A, and red peppers, broccoli and peas are packed with vitamin C. This golden frittata is enriched with our favourite super spice – turmeric, renowned for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Ingredients • 1 small sweet potato, diced • ½ red pepper, diced • 50g cheddar, grated • 60g frozen peas, thawed • 40g broccoli, cut into very small florets • 3 eggs, beaten • 1 tsp turmeric

Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place a frying pan onto a medium heat and add a knob of coconut oil. Add the sweet potato and cook for 3-5 minutes until it starts to soften. Add the red peppers and broccoli and sauté for another two minutes before adding the turmeric and cooking for 30 seconds. Finally, add the peas and stir. In another bowl, beat the eggs, add the grated cheese and combine. Add the vegetables to the eggs. Pour your mixture into buttered mini muffin cases and cook in the oven for 15 minutes until firm. Delicious served with salad. For more recipes check out littlelondonmagazine.co.uk

Ingredients • 2 eggs • 2 tbsp double cream • 70g salmon fillet cut into bite-sized pieces • 15g Parmesan shavings • 40g baby spinach • Thyme sprigs (optional) • 6 asparagus spears (for dipping) Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Butter some individual ramekins. Prepare a bain-marie (a dish or roasting tray filled with boiling water). Using this bath allows the eggs to cook gently and evenly. Next, place a small frying pan onto a medium heat and add some butter. Once melted, add the spinach and allow it to wilt for about a minute. Place the spinach at the bottom of the buttered ramekin. Place the salmon pieces on top and sprinkle with Parmesan shavings. Crack the eggs over the salmon mixture and spoon over the cream. Sprinkle over a touch more Parmesan and thyme. Place the ramekins into the bain-marie and place on the middle shelf of the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until set. While the eggs are cooking, steam the asparagus spears until al dente. Serve the eggs en cocotte with the steamed asparagus spears as soldiers for dipping.

TOP TIPS Buy the best eggs your budget will allow – ideally organic, which helps lower the risk of contaminated feed and increases nutrient density. You can check the freshness of an egg by popping it into a glass of water before you cook it. If it sinks, it’s still fresh. Eggs are very porous so avoid storing them near anything that is strong-smelling as they are likely to absorb the odour. cookinghealthy.com

Tips for teaching your child to swim… for every mini shark adventure! Children love to swim and generally as a rule the earlier you get them into the water the better. When teaching your child in the water make sure your eye level is the same as your child's and always maintain a smile – kids pick up on negativity so remember to reinforce the positive and never use negative comments. Lavish your child with praise in the water and you will see their confidence grow immensely. A fun way to teach children to breath properly in the water is to use phrases like “talk to the fish” by blowing bubbles in the water, or “listen to the fish” by turning the head with an ear in the water and breathing in. If your child really doesn’t want to get into the water then don’t force them – play it down and suggest they sit on the side with their feet over the edge so they can kick and splash the water instead. Just sitting will increase their confidence – not every child wants to jump straight in! SwimFin aims to provide and encourage a fun learning experience for children and family members of all ages and abilities without being restrictive. Most importantly ensure your child is safe at all times – whether it be during a lesson, for recreational use at the weekend or on your summer holidays in a pool or down at the beach!

FRIEND OR FOE? FIND YOUR CHILD’S FOOD ENEMIES AND KEEP LITTLE TUMMIES HAPPY WITH OUR GUIDE TO ALLERGIES AND INTOLERANCES

G

etting kids to sit down and eat a proper meal can often turn into a battle of wills. While it’s natural for children to go through fussy stages, for little ones with food allergies or sensitivities, the battle is a very different one. Recent research indicates that more than a third of parents suspect their offspring has an intolerance or allergy, but the distinction between the two is often blurred. Here, we’ve put together a simple guide to help

you recognise any problem foods and make the most of mealtimes regardless of your children’s dietary requirements. ALLERGY VS INTOLERANCE

There’s a big difference between the two. According to British charity Allergy UK, one in 12 children now suffers from a food allergy, with numbers steadily increasing. “Everyday foodstuffs can spark abnormal allergic reactions in some children,” says

Dietary sensitivities can cause anything from digestive and skin problems to fatigue and sinus issues

NUTRITION

If you notice any warning signs of intolerance, eliminate any suspect foods one by one over a month

SIMPLE SWAPS Whatever your child’s allergy or intolerance, there are lots of healthy alternatives out there GLUTEN Gluten-free oats, rice, barley, quinoa, millet and buckwheat are all child-friendly substitutes for wheat grains. “Oats contain fibre, magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper and biotin; they can also have a natural calming effect on the body,” says Cassandra. “Quinoa is higher in protein than most other grains, and can be a good source of folate, which is essential for building the blood.”

Dr George Du Toit, consultant paediatric allergist at The Portland Hospital for Women and Children. “Their bodies go into overdrive by producing too much of a special antibody called immunoglobulin. This triggers other blood cells to release chemicals, including histamine, which results in an allergic reaction.” This allergic reaction can cause swelling, vomiting and, in more serious cases, even anaphylactic shock. Trigger foods are best avoided if your child suffers an allergy. It’s not all doom and gloom, though, as things may naturally change as your little one grows. Repeat tests during childhood will confirm whether the allergy has been outgrown. Food intolerances or sensitivities are also on the rise, and although these are not as life-threatening as allergies, they come with their own set of problems, including digestive disturbances, skin problems, fatigue and sinus problems. “Dietary sensitivities are generally linked to the health of the gut, in both children and adults. A child’s digestive health may be affected for a variety of reasons, including: a lack of exposure to the right gut bacteria at birth (it’s thought that a vaginal birth and breastfeeding help to inoculate the

baby’s gut with good bacteria); by infections; the use of antibiotics at a young age; or because of deficiencies in certain nutrients,” says nutritionist Cassandra Burns of Nutri Centre (nutricentre.com). FINDING THE CULPRIT

If you’ve noticed any of the intolerance warning signs listed above, the next step is to eliminate any suspect ingredients one by one over the course of a month and then reintroduce them in small amounts to gauge any reaction. “If you already know your child suffers an intolerance, the specific food can be eliminated for a longer period of time and reintroduced later – say after six months,’ explains Cassandra. During the elimination period, the child’s digestive system and immune system will need to be supported in order to minimise the likelihood of a reaction when the food is brought back into the diet. “Working with a health practitioner, for example a nutritional therapist or naturopath, is recommended to help maximise wellbeing at this time,” Cassandra adds. L 82

ORGANIC OATCAKES £1.25 NAIRNS-OATCAKES.COM

DAIRY Non-dairy milks have a lot going for them. Varieties such as oat and coconut milk provide less protein than cow’s milk, but they are often fortified with vitamins and minerals such as calcium and vitamin D. “Opt for unsweetened versions to avoid added sugar, and avoid soya products as these are not recommended in high amounts,” advises Cassandra. Better still, make your own by blending 1 tbsp of nut butter with 500ml of water until smooth.

As an alternative to chocolate, Ombar's Coco Mylk bar is made with coconut cream. OMBAR COCO MYLK £1.99 OMBAR.CO.UK

EGGS Eggs are a base ingredients in many sweet and savoury recipes, but there are plenty of nutritious substitutes. Swap eggs with potassium-packed mashed banana (for every egg use half a banana), 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tbsp warm water, or 1/4 cup of puréed apple or pear for an antioxidant boost.

After settling for a year in the French town of Revel, it was hard to say goodbye

I

’m not questioning what I’m doing. But it’s hard leaving our family home at the start of the summer holidays as Scarlett, seven, sobs loudly, dashing from room to room bidding teary farewells like, “Goodbye, downstairs loo”. I cry too, though I’m not sure why as this is really quite funny. And because what we’re about to do is something I’ve been longing to do for years. My husband, Sam, a Spanish teacher, has been granted a year’s sabbatical, in which he plans to add a French string to his classroom bow. It’s not easy moving a family of six – including a three-week-old baby, plus a dog and two guinea pigs – but if we don’t grab the opportunity now, there may never be another. Research has shown that sabbaticals are on the up since the economic downturn, as the pace of life becomes ever more frantic. They are often a way for companies to hang on to prized individuals, as they tend to return both mentally and physically recharged. So, with Sam’s job safe, why wouldn’t we? Six weeks before we leave, I’m still not sure this escapade will happen. We haven’t found a house – which means you can’t enrol the children in school – nor tenants for our own. But somehow everything slides into place, our fourth child is born, and we’re off. SURVIVING SCHOOL

The biggest test is for the children, who aren’t won over by their parents’ sense of adventure. For them, leaving their cosy pre-prep to be thrust into a French state school LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

89

TRAVEL

Our children play tennis, roller-hockey, do judo, art and riding all within walking distance without any ability to speak the language is akin to child abuse. We mollify them with prizes after every week survived. And the stationery! The true joy of state school for a hitherto privately educated child is that you can choose your own pens and Spiderman book bag. And clothes, too – no uniform for the ever-stylish French. ‘La Rentrée’ as the French call ‘going back to school’, had been silently dreaded throughout the holidays, the elephant round about us. But on the day itself, as we scooted down to school in 20°C sunshine, it suddenly seemed a rather happy outing. Another massive plus – for the children, less so for us – is that they come home for lunch.

DOS AND DON’TS The beautiful Black Mountains overlooked the town where the family lived

learning the language

A month into term, and they still don’t understand much. I’m still waiting for all this talk of ‘children learn so fast’ to come to fruition – or are my genes just slow? In fact, not until after Christmas do they even begin to communicate, and they make giant strides after Easter, when it’s nearly time to go home. But more than just learning a language, they are also overcoming huge hurdles in their self-confidence. They are not natural extroverts, yet they’ve been thrown in the deep end and are swimming. heading home again

Between Christmas and Easter, I encourage Sam to hunt for a permanent job in France. Our town, Revel, is ideal for young families and we’ve formed good friendships – many due to curiosity about this English madhouse. Someone advised us that 10,000 inhabitants is the magic number: small enough to make friends; large enough to benefit from decent facilities. Our children play tennis, roller-hockey, do judo, art and riding all within walking distance, and at half the price of English clubs. I can’t be bothered with the rigmarole back home, as I’d have to bundle everyone into a car and loiter in the cold for them to finish. There’s a lake in the Black Mountains overlooking the town and we make day-trips to ski or camp in the Pyrenees. Likewise, the Med is just an hour away. Why would we leave? Dinner parties are hard work, simply from a linguistic and cultural view – we once served cheese after dessert, quelle horreur! But we’re relishing the challenge. We can’t even miss our old friends as we have visitors most weekends. In fact, the only force that sends us home is the lack of jobs. So, reluctantly, we return to the English grindstone, where we never have figs from the garden or a two-hour lunchbreak, a crispy croissant or wine from its source, and start making plans for our next adventure. L

• Don’t believe the myth that children pick up the lingo in weeks – it’s more like months. • Do take a full year – you might find other families are less likely to befriend you if you’re just on an extended holiday. • Don’t listen to those who say it’s too disruptive. Your children will gain far more from a year outside their comfort zone, and will quickly catch up when back on home ground. • Do find a community. Too remote, and you won’t benefit from the cultural experiences. • Do plan ahead to find homes, schools and employment. Many countries take August off, making last-minute plans impossible.

If you’ve got itchy feet, a sabbatical abroad with your family could be the answer 90

WILD AND WONDERFUL

BECKY DICKINSON KICKS BACK IN WEST WALES WITH A HOLIDAY THE WHOLE FAMILY LOVES

T

he idea of a relaxing holiday can feel like something of an oxymoron once you’ve got a child – or three – to entertain. We dabbled with camping but were thwarted by the Gortex-testing weather. And while going abroad has its advantages, it can also be exhausting – and that’s just the flight. So this year, we gave airports and canvas a miss and headed to Clydey Cottages in Pembrokeshire. As we approached our destination, with grass sprouting in the middle of the road, it seemed we were heading for a satnav disaster. Then we turned

into a rural idyll: a cluster of stone cottages set around a beautifully manicured green, festooned with flowers and overlooking sweeping, bucolic views. Recently awarded Best Place to Stay in Wales, the five-star accommodation is cosy yet luxurious, and there are loads of activities. We stayed in Heather, a two-bedroom cottage that had plenty of space for my partner and I, and our three children, aged eight, five and two. It came with a wood-burning stove and more mod cons than we have at home. We were greeted by a mouthwatering hamper from Llwynhelyg Farm Shop.

The cottages are cosy yet equipped with all the mod cons you could need

96

The locally smoked salmon, home-cured meats, speciality Welsh cheeses, handmade chocolates and bara brith (a spiced fruitcake) set the tone for our stay. The lack of mobile phone reception was unnerving at first, but even this turned out to be a blessing. It helped us switch off (although there was internet connection). One of the great things about Clydey is that owners Dewi and Jacqui Davies have three children, so they understand the needs of families. Everything is provided: potties, highchairs, bed guards, stair gates and plastic tableware. There were even wellies, baby carriers and pushchairs we could borrow, which was great as our trusty buggy sprang a puncture on the first day. Our children couldn’t wait to explore the outdoor playground with its large trampoline, sand pit, slides and ride-on toys. The eldest two were soon soaring like birds on the vertiginous swings hanging from a giant oak LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

A playground, indoor pool, games room and children's club ensured everyone was entertained

tree. There was also an indoor soft-play area and toy room for younger children. For older children, and adults too, a well-equipped games room included a pool table, table football and table tennis. My eight-year-old son couldn’t wait to take me on and it was hard to keep my inner competitiveness in check. I had forgotten that table tennis could be that much fun.

Feeding the animals was a big hit with the children

With its breathtaking views and fabulous facilities, it would be easy not to leave the eight-hectare site Another family favourite was the indoor swimming pool, which had a plentiful supply of armbands, floats and other swimming aids and toys that we could use. There was also a children’s club and we booked the children in for an afternoon. It was a luxury having a few hours off, knowing they were having fun and being well-looked after. It gave the grown-ups the opportunity

to indulge in the hot tubs, sauna and spa room, which offers massages and treatments. One of the highlights for the children was helping Farmer Malcolm to feed the animals and collect the eggs every morning. Clydey is home to rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, chickens, sheep, ponies and donkeys. There’s also a pair a pair of Disney-cute alpacas and a pig called Iggle, who delighted his young audience by

eating a raw egg and spitting out the shell. They say you should never work with children and animals, but Farmer Malcolm has it down to an art form. The children warmed to him as much as they did to his flock. With its breathtaking views and fabulous facilities, it would be easy not to leave the eight-hectare site. But Pembrokeshire has some of the most stunning coastline in the UK, so we tore ourselves away to check out Poppitt Sands, the nearest beach. It was almost, but not quite, as enchanting as its name – due to the invigorating weather. Next we headed to Cardigan, where we warmed up over mugs of hot chocolate and enjoyed the magical woodlands and crashing waterfalls. The kids had a ball climbing over fallen trees and splashing in streams. But what Clydey did best was to allow us to just hang out in our beautiful surroundings or play in the pool. I didn’t feel the constant compulsion to be doing something or going somewhere. It was a chance to enjoy some rare uninterrupted family time, away from the freneticism of everyday life, which made it the most effortlessly enjoyable break I’ve had since having children. Better still, the kids loved it too. We couldn’t have asked for more. L clydeycottages.co.uk

LEARN HOW TO SPOT THE SIGNS AND NIP BULLYING IN THE BUD, SAYS FLOSS KNIGHT OF THE UK THERAPY GUIDE

H

umans are made up of an infinity of memories, and when we have a bad experience, it can distort the good memories and lay a shaky foundation for the future – in relationships, friendships and the workplace. We all know how vulnerable our children are, and we strive to teach them to be open, kind and gentle. But, sadly, the world does not always operate on a level of reciprocal kindness and respect. As their guardians, we need to be vigilant to the signs of encroachment on their sensitive, delicate worlds and arm them with the tools that will safeguard them on their journey.

WHAT YOU CAN DO check in

Some of the signs you may see in your child are part and parcel of normal childhood angst. Find a quiet moment to have a chat with your son or daughter to ‘check in’, preferably out of the family home and in a neutral and relaxed setting. Avoid attempting

to talk when you’re busy, driving the car or when time is a pressure. Make the time to engage, observe body language and listen to what is being communicated. They may not want to tell you, but continue to be available. act fast

If it transpires that things are not as they should be, the best advice I can give any parent is to act on it immediately. Do not ignore your child’s reality; do not hope that that it will go away. Early intervention can be crucial in dissolving the collateral damage. get help

Therapeutic intervention is sometimes viewed as a defeat, but dealing with any issues will prevent them from festering. There is no more valuable gift you can give your child than the tools to resolve their problems both in the present and in their lives ahead, allowing them to discover they have the power to make different and healthy choices. L uktherapyguide.com

SPOT THE SIGNS: • General low self-esteem. • Your child suddenly seems withdrawn and is spending lots of time alone. • Signs of self-harm. • Suddenly not being included or engaging with their friendship group. • Not participating in school activities. • Overeating or undereating. • Lack of energy. • A marked change in character, where your child appears unusually anxious, angry, detached, distant or tearful.

CASE STUDY

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

“When my close friend’s son was eight years old, she started to notice that her usually bubbly, talkative little boy had become withdrawn and no longer wanted to play football and other sports. It preyed on her mind, and one day she received a phone call from the school to say he had had a ‘little accident’. “When she arrived at the school, she was met by his grazed and bloodied face, wide eyes staring up at her, shocked and confused, his lip swollen and front tooth cracked. He looked at her with tears in his eyes, but he didn’t cry, just held her hand very tightly and she took him home. “After a lot of cuddling and reassurance, he slowly peeled away the resistance and let her into the world that he had been living in for the past four months. “He told her how a group of older boys had started to pick on him, becoming more extreme, culminating in the ‘accident’. The boys had tied skipping ropes around his legs and ankles and started to pull him, face down, along the gravelly playground floor. “The school, when confronted, was ambivalent. The staff denied any knowledge of bullying and refused to speak with the children who had been the aggressors, or approach their parents. In the end, my friend decided to change schools and place her son somewhere that would not foster ‘bully culture’. “Luckily, the new school was very different. It dealt with the children as individuals and confronted any unkindness in an open and immediate way. Her son gradually regained his confidence, though his mother was still wary, watching for signs of the distress that she had missed before. “A couple of years later, she told me she had begun to see subtle changes in him again; withdrawn behaviour, mood swings and a loss of confidence. This time, she recognised the signs and she approached me asking if she should intervene, which I strongly recommended. Talking to a trained professional (she referred to him as a ‘coach’ rather than a therapist to destigmatise it) helped him to process his feelings and move beyond this experience and break the pattern before it became habitual, saving him from repercussions later in life.” LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

RUNNING HEAD

MEET THE HEAD ST BENEDICT’S SCHOOL

WE CATCH UP WITH ANDREW JOHNSON, THE SOON-TO-BE HEADTEACHER OF THE EALING-BASED SCHOOL When are you taking up the post of headteacher at St Benedict’s?

I will be taking over this September. What is your professional background?

I have been head of Stonyhurst College, a Catholic boarding and day school in Lancashire, for the past 10 years. What makes independent Catholic education attractive to children and parents?

It starts with the belief that every pupil is an individual. Everyone can achieve extraordinary things, providing they have the right support, nurturing and the right amount of encouragement and challenge. What do you see as the particular strengths of St Benedict’s School?

A Benedictine school has an interesting further dimension. Can you think of anything more genuine or compelling for a Catholic school than to have members of the monastic community involved in the day-to-day life of the school, modestly living out their daily lives by the rule of St Benedict, as a witness to the pupils and staff? This way of living, which

has stood the test of time for the past 1,500 years, complements so well the energy and vibrancy of a thriving 21st-century school. Now, imagine all of that happening in a place which isn’t set in a far-flung corner of the countryside, but in a bustling London suburb. How does the Junior School ensure that pupils achieve their full potential?

The underlying philosophy in the Junior School and Nursery is to engender a love of learning. This is an exciting time in the life of any child, and our pupils are able to develop emotionally, physically and socially in a secure and caring environment. Our dedicated teachers aim to cultivate each child’s passions and provide time for our boys and girls to create, explore, perform and question the world around them. By having the opportunity to embrace new experiences both in and out of the classroom, each child is assured of developing into a well-rounded, confident individual who is resilient and able to embrace new challenges. Creativity, literacy and numeracy are at the heart of learning, and academic tracking data is used on an ongoing basis to monitor accurately the progress that is being made throughout each academic year. 102

How do you nurture the transition between the pre-prep and junior departments at St Benedict’s?

The children who join in reception are gently prepared for the more formal educational setting of Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2). There is ample opportunity for the boys and girls to engage in activities with subject specialists (art, computing, music, science, PE), so the transition to the junior department (Years 3-6) is as seamless as possible. The pre-prep pupils attend weekly Junior School assemblies and also attend the Junior School weekly mass on a half-termly basis, and therefore the move into the older year groups feels very natural. What is your vision with the school?

Benedictine values infuse the life of the school, so pupils learn a way of living, and a route to achieving their potential. They learn that self-discipline and hard work lead to success, as well as the importance of wisdom, generosity, and how to play a meaningful part in society. I want to see the school recognised for offering an outstanding Catholic education and preparing young people to be successful in many walks of life. L stbenedicts.org.uk

INTERVIEW

What inspired you to set up Boden?

I was unhappy, and useless at my city job. I had noticed while working in New York that one could buy decent clothes via mail order, so I thought, why not try in Britain? What’s the best thing about your job?

It is lovely to work with beautiful products and so many uplifting people. Describe a typical day.

I wake 6.45am – it’s a slow start. I arrive at work by bicycle at 8.30am. There are endless meetings (some I enjoy more than others) – selecting products, imagery, discussing marketing strategies. Then it’s often lunch at my desk or maybe take the dog for walk. The afternoon sees more meetings, perhaps a trip to the West End. I cycle home at 6.30pm, followed by the gym. I’ll lay the table, have supper at home, do more work, take the dog for late-night stroll, and be in bed for 11pm.

THE BUSINESS WE CATCH UP WITH ENTREPRENEUR AND FASHION RETAILER JOHNNIE BODEN TO TALK ABOUT HIS EPONYMOUS BRAND

Was it tough juggling a business with family life when your kids were young?

I have a very supportive family, so that helped. The thing that really suffered is my social life. I fear I haven’t been a great friend… What other challenges have you had?

Retail is non-stop ‒ one is only as good as the last range. The first 10 years were tough financially, too. Putting our house on the line with three children put some pressure on our marriage. But my wife, Sophie, was great. And your proudest moments?

Having three children with a sense of humour is all one could wish for. What’s your advice for someone looking to start up a business?

Concentrate on the detail as much as the strategy. Think hard about why on earth someone should buy something from you, as opposed to an established competitor. Which places in the capital are in your Little Black Book?

Lacy Gallery on Westbourne Grove for picture frames, Heywood Hill for books, The Anglesea Arms on Wingate Road for dinner, and Berry Bros & Rudd for wine. What lies in store for the future?

Johnnie admits that Boden, despite its huge success, has faced numerous challenges along the way

More products, more shops, and more challenges I’m sure. L boden.co.uk
