WELCOME The days are now shorter, colder, darker, and I don’t know about you, but flying by at rocket speed?! I’m embracing winter and all the delights that come with it though – the hearty meals, crisp park walks, and being as layered up as an onion in chunky knits and cosy cashmere! But with a change in weather comes a new sense of excitement in the air. There’s no doubt about it: party season is officially upon us. The celebrations have been in full swing at Little London HQ. We’re still on a high from our fourth annual Little London Awards. This year we held our ceremony at the elegant Home House in Marylebone, where we were joined by friends and nominees. Champagne was sipped, canapés devoured, and proud award winners congratulated! A huge well done to those who won, but also a big thank you to our fabulous judges and all the support from those who entered – it’s so wonderful to work in an industry full of such fantastic brands and products. Check out page 40 to read all about it! This issue I’ve loved learning all about mother, grandmother and London girl through and through, Twiggy. Check out why she thinks all mothers deserve a gold medal in Martha Alexander’s exclusive interview on page 32. If, you’re struggling to get yourself into the spirit of the season, then our competition is just the ticket. You and your family could be whisked to the magical resort of Efteling in Holland. Full of wonders, with attractions and rides for all the family, enjoy a two-night stay and free return ticket, courtesy of Eurotunnel le Shuttle. Head to page 19 for further details. And keep your eyes peeled for our first issue of Little London for 2019, which comes out on 8 February – when, dare I say it, spring will be on the horizon!

WIN with Alpine Hearing Protection The holiday season is the merriest time of year, but all those crowded and loud Christmas parties, carols and fireworks at New Year’s Eve can take a toll on the extra-sensitive hearing of children. The lucky winners can choose from Alpine Muffy Baby earmuffs (£23.95, up to 36 months), Alpine Muffy earmuffs (£19.95, two years and up) or the Alpine Pluggies Kids filter earplugs (£10.99, three to 12 years). THE AWARD-WINNING MODEL, ACTRESS, SINGER AND DESIGNER TALKS SHOPPING, NW10 AND WHY SHE BELIEVES ALL MOTHERS DESERVE GOLD MEDALS

Where is home for you?

Are you less strict as a grandmother?

Kensington, where I’ve lived for 32 years. I love it because it’s very central. I’ve always lived in London. I’m a London girl through and through, and I always will be.

Probably, yes. As a grandparent, you’re not there full time. I think every mother in the world should have a gold medal, being a mum to a little one is absolutely exhausting. Twiggy is Joni’s numberone babysitter

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in NW10, so it’s funny that my daughter Carly and her husband Ben ended up living in NW10 too. I had a lovely childhood. We lived in a 1930s-semidetached house in Neasden and I went to nursery school near where the beautiful Indian temple is now. I have a photo of me in my nappy sitting on the grass in Roundwood Park, where I came third in the baby show. I vividly remember playing on the street, which you can’t do now.

INTERVIEW: MARTHA ALEXANDER. PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK; RBG KEW

Describe your relationship with Carly and three-year-old Joni.

We’re very close. Carly has travelled the world with me. She was born at Queen Charlotte’s but we left to live in LA. By the time she went to nursery we were in New York, where I was starring in the Gershwin musical My One and Only on Broadway. Wherever I went, she came too. Carly’s named after Carly Simon. When we met in New York she signed a record for my Carly. Then we had dinner and I told her I was recording an album and she offered to sing backup for me. I thought, “oh my God, Carly Simon’s singing backup for me!” – but she did. My producers – you should have seen their faces when she walked into the studio! My other favourite singer is Joni Mitchell – who Joni is named after. How often do you see Carly and Joni?

I see them a few times a week, but it depends what I’m doing. I don’t live a nine-to-five existence, I never have. Once Joni arrived I didn’t want to be away as much. I’m the number-one babysitter, I’m very happy to say. LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

How much do clothes and fashion play a part in your lives?

Born to shop, honey, born to shop! Carly has inherited my interest in clothes and I think Joni has too. She came to a shoot recently for my M&S collection, and just made a beeline for the shoes. She went straight for the glittery heels, but got very upset because she couldn’t walk in them. She put her little feet in them but kept falling over. Joni is going through a phase of only wearing what she wants to wear, which isn’t always appropriate. Is Joni like Carly was as a child?

Carly hated dresses and was obsessed by Popeye; so much so that I had to give her spinach every day. She actually wore only sailor suits from the age of three to five. She wouldn’t wear a dress and liked bugs rather than dolls – I used to get her to remove spiders from my room. Now she has a little girl who’s the total opposite: Joni loves dresses, pink, glitter and princesses! How does being a grandmother compare with being a mum?

I knew it’d be lovely but I didn’t know the depth of affection and adoration you find yourself feeling when you have grandchildren. I love being a mum and I still worry about Carly because once you’re a mum you’re always a mum. Carly will always text me when she travels. It’s thoughtful and I’m a worrywart, so I need her to. 33

Where do you go on family days out?

I feel very blessed that Joni and Carly live so near to me. We love going to Kew Gardens. It’s fabulous, especially now they’ve done up Temperate House. The freedom it gives children is just wonderful, they can run about and be safe. Joni loves the cactuses but we have to stop her touching them! I also love London Zoo. I have childhood memories of waking up excited because we were going to the zoo, and putting on my best frock. Can you tell us about any good familyfriendly places to eat in the city?

I’ve been going to San Lorenzo in Knightsbridge for years – I’ve known the owner since I was 16! Italians are brilliant with children. We also love to go to Alma’s in Harlesden, a Swedish café with a back garden for the kids. Sacre Coeur in Kensal Rise does the best pizza. Petersham Nurseries has a fabulous menu and environment. Where do you buy Joni’s clothes from?

Obviously, M&S. Its clothes are great quality at a very good price point. Carly used to be a textile designer for Stella McCartney so Joni has a lot of Stella McCartney Kids clothes which are absolutely beautiful. Any London hidden gems?

John Sandoe Books in Chelsea, which is owned by one of my oldest friends, Stewart Grimshaw. It feels Dickensian, which I love. Everything’s online now, so it’s nice to escape to a magical place like that. L The latest Twiggy for M&S collection is available now. marksandspencer.com

This year for the first time, Painshill Park will be transformed with colourful, twinkling lights and laser beams. Follow a magical trail to discover glowing follies, amazing reflections and breathtaking illuminations. The festivities continue under the stars with a live band, food stalls and a marshmallow camp fire. Visit in the evening to enjoy the new children’s experience, Santa’s Toy Factory, where elves will take you to see the gifts being made for the big day, and meet Father Christmas. SANTA LAND

SANTA AT THE ZOO

Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland hosts a glittering array of attractions, shows, activities and rides for the ultimate family festive day out, right in the heart of the capital. But no visit is complete without a trip to see Santa and his elves. Based in the children’s area of Santa Land, you can catch a glimpse of him at the Christmas Grotto at Santa’s Toy Factory, where the main man and his elves will be busy making gifts ready for the big day! There’s also a 45metre-long Ice Slide and Ice Trike Trail, as well as The Magical Ice Kingdom, hosting a sparkling new theme of the Enchanted Forest, a beautiful world complete with woodland animals and mythical creatures, created from more than 500 tonnes of ice and snow. There’s also Peter Pan On Ice, a show full of awe-inspiring skating and flying tricks, as well as Teletubbbies Live Show at the MegaDome every morning, so little ones can enjoy a festive adventure through Teletubbyland.

Santa looks after his reindeer well, but his love of animals doesn’t stop there so this year he’s coming to Battersea Park Zoo to visit all the residents, both great and small. While his elves work away back at the North Pole, a few of the lucky ones will help Santa make time to see as many boys and girls as he can. While waiting children can run around in the epic on-site playground with swings and slides, and once they’ve told Santa what they’d like for Christmas, they can head out all see all the animals. This special festive visit to the zoo includes a sticker, small gift and a Christmas treat. On Christmas Eve, Santa will finish a little earlier (3pm), so that he has time to return north, load up his sleigh and start delivering presents!

INTERVIEW

Rosamund and her partner, Robin Uniacke, have been together for nine years

Modern Motherhood LONDON-BORN ACTRESS ROSAMUND PIKE, TALKS TO FRANK GRICE ABOUT THE CHALLENGE OF COMBINING THE TWO MOST PERFECT ROLES IN LIFE

R

osamund Pike, on looks alone, appears to embody all the qualities of a modern, middle-class city mum – stylish, confident, experienced, loving. She has the face of someone thriving on motherhood while undoubtedly finding time to check in with pals over a latte. And yet, as we know, there are no real parenting stereotypes that fit real-life situations. Every mother, father, boy and girl exist on their own terms, and in the case of the actress, such an outwardly sunny, harmless, breezy disposition does well to disguise someone beneath who, in the sense of her movie roles, is as tough, controversial and resilient as they come. “I did find that, for a while, people categorised me into certain roles,” begins the mother of two. “That’s Rosamund and Robin travel just something the industry the world with their two sons does – to men as it does LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

59

women – and it’s something I fought against for a long time. “In reality, I’ve always preferred to go after projects that challenge both me and any available suppositions, so I think as time’s gone on that’s more where people place me, but I guess to a point it still goes against the blonde stereotype.” If further evidence were needed that Pike is never one to follow the safely-trod norm, you need only look at the names of her two sons – Solo (six) and Atom (three). The boys, a product of her ongoing nine-year relationship with businessman and mathematical researcher Robin Uniacke, have grown up very much in the public spotlight, although Pike – who hails from Hammersmith – has always been keen to separate work from home life. “We have a lovely family existence and that is the thing I have always cherished the most,” she says. “Of course work commitments mean strange schedules, but it’s motherhood – you adapt, and it’s always an adventure. As a family, I feel like we’re a rousing troop because we’re always on the move around the world. We’ve had the chance to see some remarkable destinations together and I like to think it’s opening all our minds, not just theirs,” she says.

INTERVIEW

Rosamund received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her starring role in thriller Gone Girl

Striking a pose at the London Film Festival screening of A Private War

As a family, I feel like we’re a rousing troop because we’re always on the move around the world “That was one of the stranger experiences,” she laughs. “When you dream of awards you always imagine scenarios where you might get that call… well, for me, I was in bed with my children who were crawling all over me. And as I learned the news, one was very stealthily rolling a motorised toy car up my body, towards my temple, into my hair. I’m trying to hear over the noise and suddenly I’m aware of a tiny engine running and I realise the car has become entirely entangled in my hair. So that’s what I was doing when I found out I was nominated,” she laughs. “In a sense, it was the perfect way, because I had my boys around me. That period I remember as this hurricane of glamour and breast-pumps and blankets and gowns, and that means so much to me now. “I don’t know if I processed too much of what was happening around me – it was all this wondrous juggling act between red

carpets and breastfeeding and babies, I was on the most splendid high, so high in fact, I don’t think my feet really touched the ground. I’ve never felt more hyper and energised.” With her boys now at an age where the actress’s career can edge ever so slightly back into focus, Pike has returned with a typically challenging project, helping to celebrate the life’s work of war reporter Marie Rosamund feels that her Colvin in A Private work life and family time are more separate now War, Matthew Heineman’s biopic of the renowned Sunday Times journalist. “It’s a project that really helps you connect with the important things in life,” she says. 60

“It’s hard-hitting and at times brutal, but embarking on something like this really helps you embrace and cherish the things away from work, and that’s my boys. “I had so many red-carpet moments, looking entirely composed, unflappable and glamorous, which were then preceded by this frantic throwing on of the dress, whipping off the breast pump, passing my child to whoever was nearest and walking out there, attempting to exude serene calm for the photographers and press. “Now I have proper separation between those two sides of life – my family and my work – and I think that’s what me and my children deserve – they shouldn’t be shared with the world by circumstance. “I now feel I’ve been able to return to myself in many ways, and that’s a really lovely quality that motherhood has gifted me as well.” L LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

“But the time has come where a sedentary lifestyle is more befitting for the family. They need stability, even if at the moment they’re still quite adaptable, but that will change and they will be the priority. My son’s in school now so it’s happening already. And that will be a balance. No matter what you do in life, in work, in family, there’s always a terrific balance necessary to keep things moving.” Pike’s ability to merge two demanding personas was no better exampled than in 2015 when news came of her Oscar nomination for Best Actress, for the film Gone Girl.

1 Crispy baked cod with sweet potato chips Makes 2 portions

Fish and chips can still very much be on the menu as a nutritious treat – try this healthy Annabel Karmel version. INGREDIENTS: Fish • 4tbsp plain flour • 1 egg, beaten • 40g/1½oz cornflakes, crushed • 2 skinless cod fillets (about 150g/5oz) • salt and pepper Sweet Potato Chips • 3 sweet potatoes, cut into wedges • 2tbsp sunflower oil Preheat the oven to 200°C or 400°F and line two baking trays with parchment. Put the flour in a bowl, the beaten egg in another bowl and the crushed cornflakes in a third bowl. Season the cod with a little salt and pepper, and coat each fillet in the flour, then the egg, then the crushed cornflakes. Arrange the coated fillets on one of the lined baking sheets. Coat the sweet potato wedges with oil, season lightly with salt and pepper and spread them out on the second lined baking sheet. Put them in the oven and bake for 30 minutes, turning halfway through the cooking time. When you turn the chips, put the fish in the oven and bake for 15 minutes until golden and cooked through. Remove the chips and baked cod from the oven, serve with the cod wrapped in paper cones. Extracted from Real Food Kids Will Love by Annabel Karmel, out now (Bluebird, £16.99/ £14.99 eBook).

LEONORA BAMFORD AND NANNY ANITA ARE KEEPING THE KIDS BUSY WITH FESTIVE ACTIVITIES AS THEY COUNT DOWN TO CHRISTMAS

W

ith all the press events I attend, I’ve been eating mince pies since July, so I can truly say I’m over them! The children, however, are just getting started and the atmosphere at home is one of much excitement. This year, when it comes to decking the halls I’m totally organised, having battled with huge garland swags for the doorways, and trimmed some garden mistletoe to hang in the house. So visitors, beware! My youngest absolutely loves that I grab him for a smooch every time we pass through the front door. My eldest, alas, is a little less thrilled. This is undoubtedly the best time of year for crafts, and Anita has been teaching us some truly awesome new ones for 2018. Her pretty Christmas baubles and ornaments really embody the festive spirit and would make great gifts for one and all. L

MARBLED FILLABLE BAUBLES You will need: Fillable baubles • paint • ribbon Method • Pour some paint into the baubles and seal the lid. • Shake them to spread the paint around the whole bauble and leave to dry. • Add a ribbon and hang them onto your Christmas tree.

A CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE I just couldn’t resist booking tickets to take my children to Lapland UK again this year. It’s like being part of a beautifully executed theatrical production that’s completely magical from start to finish. The children get to make toys in an elf factory, decorate gingerbread with Mother Christmas and enjoy the delights of the Elf Village – including an ice rink – before meeting the big man himself. I certainly hope I’m on the Good List! laplanduk.co.uk

SPIROGRAPHY ORNAMENTS You will need: Spirograph • paper • cardboard • ribbon • pens • glue • glitter

FORK BISCUITS Something my children love doing with my mother is cooking up these yummy bakes. They’re very easy to make and the kids talk about it for weeks after. You can make them plain or add a few spices for a Christmassy feel.

PHOTOGRAPHY: HELENE SANDBERG; ISTOCK

You will need: • 100g butter, softened • 50g caster sugar • 150g self-raising flour

Method • Pre-heat the oven to 180°C / 350°F and lightly grease two baking trays. • Measure the butter into a bowl and beat with a wooden spoon. Gradually beat in the sugar and then mix in the flour. Knead the mixture together with your hands until you’ve got a dough consistency. • Form the dough into balls about the size of a walnut and place well apart on the prepared baking trays. • Dip a fork in a little water and use it to flatten the biscuits. • Bake in a pre-heated oven for about 15-20 mins until the biscuits are a very pale golden. • Gently lift the biscuits off the baking tray and leave them to cool completely on wire rack.

71

Method • Use your spirograph to make some patterns onto paper. • Cut them out and stick them onto cardboard. • Cut around the cardboard to create cool circular decorations. • Line the circle with some glue and add glitter, then leave it to dry. • Make a hole in it and thread the ribbon through.

Sick and

TIRED WITH THE BUSIEST SEASON NOW UPON US, GEORGINA BLASKEY REVEALS THE NECESSARY NUTRIENTS FOR KNACKERED MUMS

I

t’s no secret that mums get tired. I’m not talking about the nighttime-feeding, mums-of-newborns kind of exhaustion. I’m talking about those of us with young children who by now are meant to be able to pack their own school bag, brush their teeth, do up their shoelaces, clear the table, and maybe even help load the dishwasher. Yet they rarely do (because nagging in itself is so tiring, it’s easier to do it yourself), so we’re on the hamster wheel of parenting life, the coalface of domestic tasks, possibly with a decent job thrown in for good measure and, funnily enough, guess what? We’re all completely shattered. Most of the time. But there’s tired and then there’s T-I-R-E-D. How do you know which variety you are? “If you have eight hours’ sleep a few nights in a row and you’re waking up exhausted, then you should take notice,” say Dr Lucy Hooper, partner at Coyne Medical (coynemedical.com) in Parsons Green, SouthWest London. “Being excessively tired can be a red flag, so it’s important to listen to your body. Are you frequently catching coughs and colds from your kids? Is your skin dry or are you losing your hair? Are you suffering from digestive problems? These are all warning signs that you could be deficient in something

or tiredness could be masking something else, such as a thyroid issue.” Part of being a good parent is looking after yourself. Mothers are renowned for putting everyone else first, making doctor appointments for their kids, but leaving their own wellbeing until breaking point. “Selfcare is vital,” says Dr Hooper. “If a mother is unwell, the whole family will suffer but a few lifestyle changes can make a huge difference. Start the day with breakfast. If you feel too rushed and stressed to eat first thing, have a mid-morning snack when you’ve finished the school run.” Also, make time to schedule exercise in to your day. It may seem counterintuitive if you’re tired, but the benefits of moderate exercise are well documented.“Even just a walk in the fresh air instead of driving can make a difference,” assures Dr Hooper. If you’re generally getting a sufficient night’s sleep, scheduling in some form of exercise a few times a week, eating sensibly and regularly, yet you still feel rundown and tired, you could be short of nutrients. There are key vitamins and minerals that many of us are routinely lacking in. While a blood test or DNA sample can give a detailed picture, Libby Limon (libbylimon.com), nutritional therapist, suggests the following 74

supplements and dietary changes could make a big difference for most of us. Please note, some of the below aren’t suitable to be taken while breastfeeding or on medication. If you’re feeling really rundown or fatigued, seek medical advice or a qualified nutritionist:

VITAMIN D Most of us are deficient in vitamin D, particularly in winter. It can make us feel fatigued and prone to colds and flu. “I prefer the oral spray or drops to tablet form,” says Libby. “You need about 800 to 1,000 iu per day.” To top up, try BetterYou DLux1000, £6.95, from naturaldispensary.co.uk

VITAMIN C AND ZINC If you’re not breastfeeding, then a supplement is a good idea. Dr Hooper notes that studies LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

HEALTH

Boost your immune system and energy levels with some well-chosen vitamin supplements this winter

PROBIOTICS A poorly-functioning gut can affect the absorption of all these supplements, so if you feel bloated, constipated or have loose bowels, you need to take action. As well as supplements, natural sources of probiotics include natural yoghurt, and fermented foods such as kefir, miso, sauerkraut and kombucha. Try Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion 30’s, £41.99, from naturaldispensary.co.uk.

NUTRIENT-DENSE FOOD Buying foods that have been frozen at source ensures they’re packed with nutrients compared to their fresh, flown-in-fromelsewhere counterparts. “The freezing process stops the breakdown of nutrients so high levels are maintained,” explains Libby. “This is true of berries in particular.”

RED MEAT

have shown that vitamin C can reduced the length of a cold, and with young children bringing home colds and sniffles all the time, it’s wise to keep your levels up. Zinc provides additional immune support. Boost your system with Higher Nature Immune +, £12.05, from naturaldispensary.co.uk.

ECHINACEA Nature’s answer to a hot toddy, this is one to take when you feel like you’re coming down with a cold or are generally rundown. “You take it for a short time intensely,” suggests LITTLELONDONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Libby. “Go for a non-alcoholic tincture.” Try Nature’s Answer Echinacea, £11.27, from iHerb.com.

B VITAMINS AND MAGNESIUM B complexes help with energy production, so if you’re feeling like there’s no petrol in the tank, this could be the answer. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, as well as normal energy-yielding metabolism and a reduction of tiredness fatigue. Try MegaMag Energen Plus, £29.45, from naturaldispensary.co.uk. 75

Libby doesn’t suggest taking iron supplements unless your GP has recommended one. Instead, look for a natural source, such as wild meat, to buoy up your levels. “Organic, venison and rabbit are lean and nutrient dense because of what they eat and how they roam. Aim for one to two portions a week.”

A GOOD ALL-ROUNDER For a one-stop multi-vitamin, Dr Hooper recommends BioCare Femforte Women’s Multinutrient, £20.95 for 90 capsules, from lifestyle-labs.com, or BioGaia Protectis tablets, a chewable probiotic the whole family can take, £9.99 for 20, biogaia.co.uk. L

For most parents, besides choosing where to go and how to get there, there’s a multitude of other factors to consider, too; from the facilities and childcare options available to cuisine that will appease your fussy eaters, and of course, the local beaches, nearby attractions and activities. There’s certainly no ‘one size fits all’ formula for family trips abroad, which is why it really makes all the difference to book with a tour operator that not only knows the destinations inside out, but also understands your specific needs. Nowadays the majority of holiday planning is done online, but personalised service and first-hand knowledge should never be underestimated. So much can be gained from speaking to someone who has actually visited the property or hotel you’re staying in, and is able to provide reassurance if you’re feeling anxious about travelling with young children. With an impressive 40 years of experience under its belt, Simpson Travel, an awardwinning specialist tour operator with an expansive, yet carefully chosen range of villas, apartments and hotels, finds that knowledge and experience continues to be a huge draw

FAMILY TRAVEL

When was the last time you truly relaxed on a family holiday? If you have young children, your idea of a stress-free trip might have simply become getting everyone there and back again in one piece, with as few complaints, arguments and injuries as possible. So, when you’re pining for a few uninterrupted hours of unwinding by the pool, a crèche can offer the perfect remedy. If you’re heading to the Greek islands, both the Hatchlings Crèche (six months to three years) and the Turtle Club (four to 10 year olds) are brilliant for youngsters, available at the private villas at Mousses in Lefkada and Periyali in Zakynthos. Even if you don’t need childcare, finding 78

the perfect villa is still an important part of your holiday. Whether you fancy a smaller family getaway or plan on bringing along grandparents and relatives for moral support, a property that gives everyone their own space is definitely the way to go. A superb example of a perfect property for a multi-generational holiday is the charming Domaine Santu Pietru, Villa Alba, in Corsica. As well as two comfortable bedrooms in the main building, there is an additional one-bedroom guest cottage in the garden, ideal for family members who want their privacy, Mousses in Lefkada, is one of the most child-friendly destinations in Greece

Four Seasons Langkawi is set in a tropical parardise

POS TCAR D from

LANGKAWI GEORGINA BLASKEY heads to the pretty island just off Malaysia’s coast for a tropical family holiday WHITE SAND, TURQUOISE SEA, JUNGLE BACKDROP – it may sound like a dream honeymoon, but we’re actually a family of four at Four Seasons Langkawi. A short flight from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore will transport you to an island of lush rainforests, limestone cliffs and the Andaman Sea’s warm waters. Set in a UNESCO World Geopark, the Four Seasons has slipped into this tropical location and created a resort that’s beautiful, serene and natural. Just like the island itself. We stayed in one of the new Deluxe Beach Villas, a 226sqm haven with two luxurious bedrooms, a bathroom suite with family-sized Hammam-style terrazzo tub and an outdoor sunken shower. The villa’s glass front frames the view of the Thai shores beyond. It’s always the sign of a good hotel when you settle in quickly. All the staff are smiley, chatty and simply can’t do enough for you. After daily breakfasts, the kids were keen to get to Kids For All Seasons club, where activities included batik painting and henna. Following beachside lunches at Kelapa Grill, we’d go for a dip. The pool’s multitiered structure of waterfalls, fountains and

underwater jets makes you feel like you’re swimming in a giant water feature. If you’re active, there’s also a watersports centre, tennis courts and gym on site. I loved dawn yoga by the lotus pond, and although golf buggies are available, there are bikes provided too. We sampled all of the resort’s eateries, but our favourite was Ikan-Ikan, a Malaysian spot serving award-winning recipes. The waiting staff remembered the children’s names on our return, a small but appreciated detail. Eagles, otters, walking fish: Langkawi’s Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is home to one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Setting sail with an experienced naturalist as our guide, we passed between towering sea stacks to the park’s dramatic waterways – a maze of ancient cliffs and tangled mangroves. We saw monitor lizards and sleeping vipers, and a monkey even jumped aboard! Despite there being so much to do, my favourite moments were sunsets spent in my hammock with a G&T, listening to the monkeys chattering above me. L

THE S -WORD Should children really be made to say sorry? BECK Y DICKINSON looks at the arguments against telling children to apologise

S

orry seems to be the hardest word – or so sang Elton John. And if you’ve ever tried to persuade a toddler to apologise for snatching another child’s toy, you might agree with him. Teaching children to say sorry is for most parents, a mark of socially acceptable behaviour and parenting done properly. We encourage children to use it from an early age, along with ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. But some experts disagree, arguing that training children to say sorry is pointless and could even encourage them to lie. As ludicrous or counter-intuitive as this may sound, there’s sound psychological reasoning behind the argument. It’s well documented that pre-schoolers haven’t yet developed a sense of empathy. They’re notoriously egocentric in the way they perceive the world. According to the influential child psychologist, Jean Piaget, “the egocentric child assumes that other people see, hear, and feel exactly the same as the child does.” And if a child can’t understand how another person feels, they can’t feel remorseful for their behaviour. Saying sorry is at best hollow, at worst, dishonest. Early years development expert and founder of Baby Sensory (babysensory. com), Dr Lin Day, says: “Sorry’s a word that toddlers under the age of four simply don’t understand, due to the immaturity of the cognitive and emotional processes in the brain. In most cases, younger children can’t comprehend how the other person feels or what the word really means.” Author of It’s OK Not to Share and Other Renegade Rules for Raising Competent and Compassionate Kids, Heather Shumaker believes parents make children say sorry because they feel judged by other adults if they don’t. She says: “We want them to be kind, feel bad if they hurt someone, and learn socially acceptable behaviour. Those are all

good goals, but you can’t force remorse. If you’ve ever heard a kid say ‘sooorry’ in a fake voice, you know what I mean.” In fact, children quickly learn that sorry isn’t the hardest word – it’s actually a quick way of getting out of trouble. But letting your child get away with upsetting another child doesn’t seem much better – especially when there’s pressure from other parents to elicit an apology from the little monster. Dr Day advises taking a softer approach. “It’s far more productive to remain calm and compassionate. Rather than forcing an apology, parents can say sorry on their behalf. Parents of the victim usually feel very upset, and they need something to help reduce their anxiety and to offer reassurance.” Yet picking up the slack for your child’s misdemeanours doesn’t mean letting them get away with it, though. After all, we need them to learn when something isn’t acceptable, so

more easily through sign language.” Likewise, Heather Shumaker believes that actions are more effective than words. “If someone’s hurt, a child can go and get an ice pack or favourite blanket. Taking action really works, and helps develop kindness and awareness of others. It also helps a child cope with feelings of anger and embarrassment. Making a guarantee works better than saying sorry. ‘I won’t push you again’ means more to a child than sorry. Children feel a lot safer.” But placing a reprieve on a word, doesn’t mean avoiding it. Your child will need to start using ‒ and meaning ‒ it at some point, so they must get used to hearing it first. “Model the behaviour of apologising from birth, just as you model greetings,” says Heather. “But don’t force it. When you make mistakes as an adult ‒ and this can be tough for us ‒ own up and say sorry. That helps kids realise even big people make mistakes and it

IF A CHILD CAN’T UNDERSTAND HOW ANOTHER PERSON FEELS, THEY CAN’T FEEL REMORSEFUL that they become civilised individuals in the future – however far off that may seem! Instead of eliciting a formal apology, Dr Day suggests encouraging children to make up for their behaviour in non-verbal ways. “A hug or a cuddle with the victim is one of the best ways to say sorry without words. Close physical contact relieves stress and is usually the best cure because it makes children feel loved and wanted. Parents can initiate the hug or cuddle and get involved too. Signing the word is also a useful tool. Very young children who are unable to express their feelings through speech can do it

90

isn’t the end of the world. Children will say it on their own, trust them. They’ll learn to pull it out when they truly feel it.” So the question isn’t if, but when a child should start using the s-word. Well, if you want them to really mean it, probably not until they’re four. “Four years on, when the emotional centres of the brain have matured they can be encouraged to say sorry,” says Dr Day. “At this age, children demonstrate a much deeper awareness of how others feel.” And while four years seems like a long time to wait for an apology, take comfort in the fact that by then, it’s more likely to be heartfelt. RUNNING HEAD

Scamp & Dude’s slogan is meant to fill kids with courage

THE BUSINESS Jo Tutchener-Sharp founder of

SCAMP & DUDE

Jo and her husband juggle two businesses with the demands of raising their two young sons

The designer talks about life-changing moments and the importance of helping others Tell us the story behind the brand.

I suffered a brain haemorrhage in October 2015 and discovered I had a lump on my brain. Having to face brain surgery, and the fact I might leave my two boys (aged just one and three at the time) without a mummy was terrifying. It’s true what people say: when you face death, you look at your life differently. I kept asking myself if I was proud of how I’d lived my life, and whether I’d helped enough people. I made myself a promise that if I made it through the surgery, I’d spend my life helping as many people as I possibly could. Luckily I survived the surgery, but then had to spend 10 days apart from my children recovering in hospital. It was so hard being apart from my boys and worrying about how they were coping, but it was this moment that inspired the creation of Scamp & Dude. The company slogan is ‘a superhero has my back’. What does this mean?

Scamp & Dude is all about helping children (and grownups) feel stronger, giving them courage and filling them with superpowers. Our slogan tells kids that someone’s watching over them, even if they can’t see them.

Superhero Sleep Buddy is a comforter to watch over kids and keep them safe while they sleep

Designed to help with separation anxiety, we have a superpower button on each garment which, when pressed, gives the child a burst of their chosen superpower. We donate a Superhero Sleep Buddy to a child in need for each one sold; we’ve so far donated over 1,000 to kids who are very ill or have lost a parent. Describe a typical work day.

I also loved when a customer tagged me in an Instagram video of her son, who has cerebal palsy, pressing his superpower button to give him the strength to walk. Moments like that make all the hard work worth it. Copycat versions of your designs have appeared on the high street. How do you compete against the big brands?

I get the boys ready before my husband drops them off at school and nursery and my working day begins. I spend the day liaising with our factory, designing new collections, coming up with campaign ideas, having meetings with children’s charities and brands regarding collaborations, planning shoots, and so much more. 3.45pm comes around really quickly! Once the kids are in bed, the laptops come out again. My husband runs his own business too, so luckily he understands and we work side by side with a glass of wine.

It’s so hard when you’re copied, it really takes your breath away. You feel so vulnerable, and it really makes you question the ethics of the industry. It’s not right that brands with huge budgets and design teams think it’s OK to pass off your work as their own. And it’s not just the big brands either. I’ll always stand up to copycats, I’ve been through far too much to let people get away it. We’re very lucky to have the most amazing community on Instagram, the support we get keeps me going!

What has been your proudest moment?

We’re about to launch some leopard and lightning bolt scarves. For every scarf sold, one is donated to a woman who has cancer or a mother of a sick child. We have some exciting collaborations in the pipeline, as well as news about the arrival of our first shop. Running Scamp & Dude is never dull, and I’m so grateful. If I find myself at the golden gates again, I’d be proud of what I’ve achieved and how many people I had helped. L

Launching Scamp & Dude in Liberty in November 2016 was something I’ll never forget. It’s been my favourite store since I moved to London 20 years ago, so seeing my collection there is very, very special. Another proud occasion was winning the Little London Award for Best New Brand in 2017, and the moment Drapers awarded us with the Kids Brand of the Year 2018 accolade. 98
