t’s been a busy few years for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. First there was their fairytale wedding at Westminster Abbey in 2011. Then, of course, came the birth of their first child Prince George in 2013, quickly followed by a royal tour of Australia and New Zealand and the US last year. With their precious daughter safely here, hopefully now William and Catherine can enjoy some well-deserved family time. When they’re not seeking out sunshine in exotic destinations in the Maldives or private islands in Mustique, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge love to head off to one of their secret UK hideaways. From the early days of their romance in the enchanting seaside town of St Andrews, Scotland, to taking young

Prince George to visit his grandparents at grand Balmoral – they even reportedly had a mini babymoon with Prince George here in October – William and Catherine have several holiday haunts dotted all over the country. Perhaps they’ll want to return with their two children to where it all began – to St Andrews, home to the eponymous university (and also Scotland’s oldest, dating as far back as 1411) where the couple first met. The young couple spent several years enjoying the town’s rich history, sharing a house on Hope Street right in its medieval centre, surrounded by cobbled streets and exceptional sea views; it’s so spectacular that as well as its vast golf course overlooking the beach, which has earned the town the nickname of ‘the home of golf’,

St Andrews was also the setting for the iconic opening sequence of the film Chariots of Fire. For golfing enthusiasts, or indeed anyone keen to stay somewhere steeped in tradition, The Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort Spa is a prestigious establishment overlooking the famous 17th ‘Road Hole’ of the Old Course, the West Sands, and the gorgeous coastline of Fife. Not all that far away lies another royal retreat: the sprawling Balmoral Estate, favoured by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, and once described by Queen Victoria in her journals as “my dear paradise in the Highlands”. Set amidst the scenery of Royal Deeside, and looking out at the breathtaking Lochnagar mountain, the castle at Balmoral is a classic example of Scottish Baronial

architecture, and is sublime in its secluded setting within Cairngorms National Park. Closed throughout winter, in 2015 the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions are open until 31 July, and though the royal couple may avoid it during this time, for the rest of us there are lots of nearby hotels, ranging from luxury five-star stays to cosy B&Bs where you can make the most of this regal and beautiful setting. William and Catherine have also been known to regularly visit Birkhall, the hunting lodge of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, also located on the Balmoral Estate, which is the former home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Further south, there is the secluded farmhouse where William and Catherine spent the first few years of their marriage while the Prince served as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot, based in Anglesey, Wales. With a private beach and stunning views of Snowdonia, it was leased out to the royal couple until they moved into their apartments in Kensington Palace in 2013. The area’s beaches and vistas of Newborough Forest, Llanddwyn Island and Snowdonia are so irresistible that William and Catherine vowed to return for holidays, and having lived here before they know they would be sure of finding privacy away from the world’s eyes.
www.britain-magazine.com
Lastly, the royal estate of Sandringham, Norfolk, has long served as a holiday haven for the Cambridges and now William and Catherine have their own residence here, at Anmer Hall. The family’s Georgian country house in the village of Anmer is only two miles east of the Queen’s country retreat, the Grade II listed Sandringham House, which occupies 20,000 acres of land, thus providing plenty of space for little Prince George to run around in – and Princess Charlotte when she is big enough. The gardens at Sandringham were opened to the public by King Edward VII in 1908, the Museum by King George V in 1930, and Sandringham House on the request of Her Majesty The Queen in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977. However, it is in the 10-bedroomed country house of Anmer Hall that the Cambridges are expected to spend most of the next couple of years. It is here that the family will live full time as Prince William devotes himself to his family and his career as an air ambulance pilot. The Georgian house, which includes tennis courts, a swimming pool and a newly added conservatory, should provide all the refuge the family needs and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are obviously very comfortable here; so much so that they are regularly spotted in the surrounding towns and pubs.

As Prince George gets used to having a younger sibling, we look back at royal brothers and sisters of old
F
or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the arrival of their daughter is of course a thrilling addition to their brood, providing a little sister for Prince George. But how will the young prince fare with this new family dynamic? The relationship between royal siblings is a topic of endless fascination to us mere mortals. The stories of these relationships – from the close friendship between Princes William, 32, and, Harry, 30, to embittered rivalries such as that of Queen Elizabeth I and her elder sister Mary – are well documented not just in history books, but also in folklore, and today in the tabloid press. It would seem that these days, a fraught sibling relationship is much more carefully avoided than it used to be, as the Royal Family strives to give its younger members a more balanced upbringing; William and Harry enjoy a strong bond, largely thanks to the efforts of their late mother, Diana, to provide them with as ‘normal’ a childhood as heirs to the British throne could possibly have. The two brothers have presented a unified front in both their public and private lives, lending their names, together with Catherine, to The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, and frequently working as a philanthropic duo. They had good role models too – before them, Her Majesty The Queen and her sister, Princess Margaret, though arguably as different in terms of character as chalk and cheese, were totally devoted to each other.
However, throughout history, being the ‘spare’ to the ‘heir’, as it is often seen, has created more than a few rifts within the Royal Family. Though Princess Margaret and our present Queen were certainly close, the differences in how they were educated and ultimately groomed for their roles may well have led to the rebellious behaviour and bohemian nature of the younger sister. In bloodier times, when uprisings and battles were common and murdering your young nephews to claim the throne wasn’t such a far-fetched idea, it is easy to see why the envy created simply by birthright might create a feud. The harsh comparisons between Richard the Lionheart and his younger brother King John are a classic example. Even Disney weighed in on the subject of this sibling rivalry, casting John as an evil, embittered mummy’s boy in its 1973 cartoon Robin Hood and it wasn’t the first time John had been depicted as a scheming and untrustworthy character, jealous of his heroic older brother. Richard was constantly absent as King, chasing glory abroad on endless Crusades, while John stayed at home, focusing on administration and order before being coerced into sealing Magna Carta at Runnymede. Sibling dynamics may also explain Richard’s gallivanting ways since, as the third legitimate son of his father King Henry II, he was not expected to succeed to the throne and was rather taken by surprise with his kingly duties when his elder brothers both died.

ultimately saved the monarchy after his brother abdicated to marry divorcée Wallis Simpson. Despite some difficulty and a reluctance to take the crown – his speech impediment forms the basis of the film The King’s Speech – he still managed to see the country through the Second World War and became a much-loved figure. When it comes to Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the likelihood of a harmonious friendship is high. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will no doubt exercise a sensible and steady approach in raising both children and there’s every chance circumstances will change again – if the royal couple choose to have a third child, ‘middle child’ syndrome may come into play.

Of course it’s not always as black and white as the heir apparent blossoming while the heir presumptive hurtles off the rails. Both King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I are testament to this. Following the death of his brother Arthur, Prince of Wales, who succumbed to an unknown ailment at the age of 15, Henry was thrust onto the throne, and went on to enjoy a lengthy reign. Queen Elizabeth I is often seen as one of the greatest monarchs in history but had a bitter and tumultuous rivalry with her elder half-sister, Queen Mary I, or ‘Bloody Mary’. More recently, King George VI, a younger sibling to King Edward VIII, overcame the stigma of being second in line to the throne and
