Elegant period notes and just a touch of grandeur suit the formal ehtos and classical proportions of a manor home. Full-length curtains frame windows with beautiful vistas, wing armchairs look seriously smart as well as offering wrap-around shelter from chills when drawn close to an open fire, whilst printed patterns on walls, lights and fabrics, and a tapestry, too, add visual warmth.

When life seems busier than ever, time to luxuriate in a beautiful bathroom is a simple pleasure. Mary Carroll looks to the interior designers’ approach to creating a bathroom which not only functions well, but looks elegant, too
10/01/2017 13:05
T
here is something so tactile and alluring about a beautiful bathroom. It can feed our fantasies and is an important stage first thing in the morning and last thing at night, so it needs to deliver. However, the selection of taps, showers and baths can seem endless, and it is easy to succumb to the vast range of hardware on offer in isolation of everything else. The real secret is to get the design right so that a bathroom looks good and delivers an experience to suit your lifestyle. Interestingly, many interior designers turn to specialist bathroom companies when working on a client’s home. This makes sense when plumbing is involved, as it needs to be thought through professionally – everything needs to work in tandem and it is useful to have the latest knowledge of what works best in various situations. The combination of a bathroom specialist and an interior designer makes for a really successful room, as the latter can add in the all-important aesthetics to give the space personality and style. In addition to this, designers are always concerned about the flow of a home so they will be mindful of how the bathroom works with all the other rooms in your home.
“The homes you feature are charming, comfortable and stylish, filled with ideas I can play with in my own house”
THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH Like most important rooms in our homes, doing the research pays dividends
later on, so explore different looks before making commitments. For instance, if installing an en-suite bathroom, it should be borne in mind that it needs to have a synergy with the bedroom to give the feeling of a suite; it should feel like a glamorous extension of the sleeping area. This is where colour and texture have an important role to play, to provide a smooth transition between the two rooms. Take into account the various materials on offer. Tiles, marble, wallpaper, plaster and paint can all add different dimensions, although it possible, too, to use just one beautiful material luxuriously. Even the type of grout used between tiles can add a variance of colour and texture – a very narrow grout has a more sophisticated edge and prevents tiles from looking like patchwork. There are some very good ranges of Mapei coloured grouts which work exceptionally well with grey and beige tiling. Making sure all these details have been thought through carefully can make all the difference to the final effect. The floor in a bathroom is one of the most important surfaces, and possibly one of the trickiest to choose, as it is one of the few rooms in the house where it is necessary to combine comfort with practicality and safety. For comfort, underfloor heating is a must and the latest systems are advanced and effective. This method of heating can be combined with a heated towel rail to give you a cosy room throughout the year, as the heat sources can be adjusted depending on the season. If considering a wooden floor, bear in mind that wood will be affected by the humidity in the bathroom and will need to be sealed to prevent warping.
ABOVE There is much to admire about this large bathroom in the Jupiter Suite at Foxhill Manor by Trevillion Interiors. The confident use of colour creates warmth whilst symmetry imbues calm. This is a period property yet the design approach makes it feel very now. LEFT Lashings of marble make for an exceptional bathroom. Here, Keech Green shows the way to effectively mix materials, using antique brass finishes for taps, rails and other fittings. RIGHT A tonal blind with feature wallpaper adds texture and elegance to this tranquil countryside bathroom by Helen Green. The oval bath adds an organic note.

hen it comes to heating our homes, few would deny the convenience of an efficient central heating system. However, whilst a real fire may no longer be our main source of heat, supplementing central heating with a visually enticing fireplace or wood-burning stove offers a warming and sensory focal point around which we instinctively gather on winter evenings. After all, there is nothing quite as lovely as relaxing in front of flickering flames. FIRESIDE FOCUS An enduring staple, the fireplace stands at the heart of any room, and historically inspired designs, whether fashioned from wood, stone or cast iron, offer timeless appeal. Although original fire surrounds – ranging from elegant marble Georgian constructs right through to decorative Victorian tiled registers and Edwardian pared-back classics – are often much preferred to reproductions, sizes and styles will inevitably be dictated by availability. To allow for a more flexible approach to scale, style and proportion, it may be necessary to consider quality reproductions or bespoke designs, such as those by Chesney’s or Jamb. As Paul Chesney of Chesney’s says, “It is vital that any fireplace is sympathetic to the style of the room and proportionally correct”. Although overall dimensions are, to a large extent, dictated by the size of the chimney breast, bear in mind that all eras contain both the simple and the ornate, and that it is not always necessary to feel restricted by period accuracy. Cues can also be taken from the design details in your home. Whilst traditional designs tend to work well in all types of homes, and the bucolic appeal of the inglenook is still a rural must-have, many modern designs, with their clean lines, can also work well in period homes.
