ravelling with a baby is a daunting prospect for many parents. Even mums and dads who were seasoned globetrotters before starting a family can feel overwhelmed by the logistics of that first holiday with their little one. Break the organising down into bite-sized chunks, however, and it all becomes more manageable, allowing you to really get excited about the adventures that await you as a new family.
GETTING A PASSPORT Fill out a paper application for your child’s first passport and take advantage of the Post Office’s Check and Send service, which costs around £10 on top of the usual fee. The rules for passport photographs aren’t as strict for babies as they are for adults, but it can still be tricky to get right – a visit to a high-street photo specialist or chemist will save you a lot of stress. If you’ve filled everything in correctly and sent in the documents, the passport will be ready in about three weeks. There’s also a fast-track service to turn around a new passport within a week,

but it costs extra and you’ll need to attend an appointment.
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR HOTEL Most hotels should be able to supply a cot and high chair, but do check when booking so you can bring your own if need be. Ask about in-room amenities: a kettle and fridge are absolute essentials; a bathtub is pretty handy too, but not a deal breaker. We always travel with a tiny inflatable paddling pool that fits in the bottom of shower stalls. A balcony is a massive bonus because it gives you somewhere to sit and relax after baby’s bedtime. It’s worth asking about babysitting services too. Most familyfriendly hotels should be able to arrange this for you. Enquire about a room at the end of a hallway and away from the lifts or stairs. Your baby will be less likely to be disturbed by the noise of other guests and, being further from occupied rooms, you’ll feel less guilty if your little one cries in the night. Depending on your destination, it’s worth asking about the cost of a suite

A BALCONY GIVES YOU SOMEWHERE TO SIT AND RELAX AFTER BABY’S BEDTIME
TRAVEL VACCINATIONS The standard vaccinations your baby will receive on the NHS will protect them from most of the diseases you might come across when travelling, particularly in developed nations. Far-flung destinations often require additional vaccines, some of which can only be given above a certain age, so talk to your GP or practice nurse before booking your trip to make sure you’re covered.
FLYING WITH BABY Take more food and milk than you think you might need so you’re covered in case of delays. Be prepared for baby’s feeding and sleep routines to go out the window when flying – there are just too many distractions to contend with and it’s impossible to time things properly when

you’re dealing with security, boarding, customs and other airport demands. I try to go with the flow and offer my daughter frequent healthy snacks to make sure she’s getting enough to eat. (Snacks can also serve as very useful distractions if your baby is getting bored or frustrated.) Breastfeeding mothers might find themselves feeding more frequently and for longer than usual on flights because the baby will seek comfort in the strange environment. Pack as many small, non-noisy toys as you can reasonably fit into your carry-on luggage. Soft toys and lift-the-flap books are a good bet, and I find a “stunt wallet”, filled with a few expired loyalty cards that I don’t mind losing can keep my daughter absorbed for hours. Walking up and down the plane offers your baby endless new sights, sounds and interactions – you’ll probably spend a lot of the flight on your feet! A sling is also a handy tool for helping your little one nap while you’re on the move. We always travel with Calpol, infant Nurofen and teething gel just in case. To avoid earache, encourage your little one to breastfeed, eat or drink during take off and landing. It offers a distraction from all the commotion.

compared to a standard double – in a lot of the big US hotel chains there often isn’t much difference, and you’ll be grateful for the extra space to stow not just your sleeping child, but all their gear too. If that’s not an option, a large wardrobe can work nicely as a miniature bedroom for storing baby’s things out of the way and keeping the main room more organised.
This slice of paradise has its own private stretch of beach, where swaying palm trees offer plenty of natural shade. The pool is great fun, the kids’ club is open to babies from six months old. And a visit to the Blue Spa is the perfect holiday treat for grownups! A garden suite on a bed and breakfast basis from £558, turquoiseholidays.co.uk

ne of the best things about no longer being pregnant (aside from the wonderful new addition to your family, of course) is that there’s no need to worry about Zika anymore. This means you’re free to explore far-flung destinations and take your little one on their first proper adventure.
TRAVEL VACCINATIONS While the routine NHS infant vaccinations your baby receives at eight weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks and 12 months will protect them for travel within Europe and to other developed nations, more exotic destinations may require additional vaccines. Some of these vaccines – such as those for typhoid and hepatitis, as well as common antimalarial medications – can only be given above a certain age or weight, so if you’re considering travelling to a high-risk area, talk to your GP or practice nurse before booking your trip. Even if a destination you’re hoping to visit qualifies as high risk for a particular disease, you might still be able to take your baby, depending on the type of trip you’re planning. If you’re staying in an upmarket resort and unlikely to be spending lots of time with the local population, for example, your risks are greatly reduced, to the point when you might not need vaccinations at all. In destinations where malaria isn’t a risk, you’ll still need baby-safe insect repellent and a mosquito net to cover the cot (and pram for evenings out). There are plenty of universal-fit ones available online.
FLYING LONG-HAUL Try to book the bulkhead row and a carrycot or child seat (depending on the age of your baby). This is often more straightforward to do over the phone
rather than online, and you should reconfirm the booking before you fly. If these seats aren’t available, and there are two of you travelling with your baby, book a window and aisle, in the hope that the middle seat will be left empty. This often works, and even when it doesn’t, your neighbour’s likely to be willing to swap the middle seat for one of yours, so you’ll sit together anyway. If money’s no object, you might consider paying for a seat for your baby – you won’t regret having the extra space. Children under 12 usually pay around 75 per cent of full fare. As with short-haul flights, pack a large supply of baby food, milk and snacks. This means you’ll be covered in case of delays and will have reserves to hand
on yourself during this period is crucial, so avoid attempting any ambitious adventures while you’re all exhausted. Try to nap when your baby does, so you’ve got some back-up energy to cope with night-time wake-ups. Being outdoors in the daytime is a good idea, as the daylight helps kick the body clock into line. Keep baby’s bedtime routine close to what it is at home, so she knows that it’s time to sleep, even if her body is telling her the opposite.
WHEN TO GO December to April is the best time to visit the Caribbean, with hurricane season over and the wet season yet to start. Expect temperatures of around 30°C. Indian Ocean temperatures stay fairly
KEEP BABY’S BEDTIME ROUTINE CLOSE TO WHAT IT IS AT HOME SO SHE KNOWS IT’S TIME TO SLEEP for the moments when nothing else is working to calm your baby down. Pack all your food into one bag and all your baby toys and books into another within your carry-on luggage, so everything is easy to find whenever you need it. Hope for the best but expect the worst: if you prepare yourself for your baby not sleeping for the entire flight, any napping will feel like a lottery win.
JET LAG Once you get to your destination, you might find that your baby sleeps really well the first night because they’re exhausted from the journey, but they’re wakeful at night and grumpy in the daytime after that. Don’t worry, as it’ll pass in three or four days. Being easy
constant, too – think lows of 26°C and highs of 30°C – but the Maldives gets its best weather between December and April. After April, you’re risking holidaying through monsoon season. Bali’s dry season coincides with British spring and summer, so head there in May, June or September to avoid the crowds. Temperatures in Bali dip to around 22°C at night all year, making it a comfortable option for restless sleeping. In May, you can expect daytime highs of 28°C. To keep your baby cool, make sure they’re drinking plenty of fluids. Not all toddlers are big water-drinkers, so offer snacks like cucumber and watermelon. Air conditioning is a good idea if available, as hot weather can make napping more difficult.

hey say that a change is as good as a rest, but when it comes to going on holiday with your baby, sometimes a change just isn’t going to cut it. When you really feel like kicking back and enjoying a few hours of child-free time on your well-earned break, a crèche can be an excellent solution. Kids’ clubs used to be limited to older children, and while in many destinations that’s still the case, these days more hotels and resorts are now providing childcare for the under-twos, too. Travel in low-season and childcare might even be included in the cost of your stay. Some areas of the world are better represented for early years childcare than others – it can still be tricky to find in South East Asia and the Middle East, for example, while in Europe and the Caribbean, crèches for under-twos are fairly common. It’s worth bearing in mind that, as with crèches at home, you’ll most likely need to stay onsite at the hotel or resort. Booking childcare and crèche sessions ahead is a good idea, too – just make sure you check the individual hotel’s policy when making your reservation.
Activities include indoor play, story time, snow painting, forest walks and more
POWDER BYRNE, AUSTRIA AND SWITZERLAND Thought having a baby meant putting your annual ski holiday on ice? Think again. Powder Byrne offers an excellent crèche service at its ski resorts in Zurs in Austria, and Flims, Arosa and Lenzerheide in Switzerland, allowing you to hit the slopes while your little one has fun. Travel outside of the school holidays and the crèche service is free, or in peak periods, you pay up to £565 for six days. To save on packing, Powder Byrne will also provide all of the nappies, wipes and formula required, then simply charge it to your bill later. powderbyrne.com

ravelling in clans is on the rise. According to The Telegraph, more than 18 per cent of us have been on a ‘3G’ – three generations – holiday in the last year. While spending time with loved ones is the main reason for such a trip, it’s not just about family bonding. An eighth of those surveyed stated that shared childcare and the fact another member of family pays for the trip were key motivators – something most exhausted, financially-squeezed parents can relate to. Whatever the incentive, carefully choosing where to stay and what to do for this kind of holiday is essential. Here are a few options that cater to everyone, from toddlers to grandparents…

WHY HOUSE, SRI LANKA For a family beach holiday
When it comes to long-haul sunshine for the whole family, Sally & Alice Travel Co. recommends Sri Lanka. Why House is a chic, nine-bedroom hotel surrounded by jungle and paddy fields. Just outside Mihiripenna, it’s a five-minute tuk-tuk ride from some of Sri Lanka’s most kid-friendly beaches. What makes this property perfect for large families is the many accommodation options. Besides the hotel, the Garden House can sleep up to 10, and the two cosy cabanas are the perfect hideaway for teens or grandparents. sallyandalice.com/sri-lanka

SKI TALINI, THREE VALLEYS, FRANCE
For a bespoke chalet trip With the prospect of lugging multiple family members’ skis and boots across a snowy resort several times a day, finding a slick family-orientated operator for your ski holiday is essential. Logistics aside, skiing is a wonderful group activity – especially if you find a resort where everyone can dip in and out of a range of mountainside activities in their own time, coming back together for lunches and cosy dinners. From hot tubs and cinema dens to private chefs and three chalets each sleeping 10 to 13 people, Ski Talini goes the extra mile. skitalini.co.uk
LEAVE THE SQUABBLES AT HOME… • Choose digs with plenty of nooks and crannies, so everyone can find space when they need it. • Activities on tap removes the potential drama of group decision-making. • Booking somewhere that offers help with domestic duties makes the trip feel more like a holiday for everyone. • Take turns doing things like watching the kids’ tea or escorting them to the beach. • Build in downtime for everyone; tiredness can put pressure on communal living.
TRAVEL LOCAL, COSTA RICA
For natural-world wonder Travel Local cuts out the middle man by putting adventure-seekers in touch with on-the-ground tour operators across the world. Not only are you supporting the local economy, but you get a more tailored experience, too – they can advise what’s best for kids, little and large. Costa Rica is safe, friendly and offers everything from jungle adventures and volcano treks to Caribbean beaches. SABI SABI BUSH LODGE, SOUTH AFRICA For safari sunsets
As wonderful as piling into a country pad for the weekend is, it isn’t always as relaxing as a hotel. Thankfully, Bruern Cottages offers the best of both worlds with tastefully converted cottages spread across pretty gardens, with all the facilities of a hotel. Besides the indoor pool and spa, Bruern prides itself on being a ‘paradise for children’ with play cabins, bikes, a games room and more. Weir House has its own croquet lawn, while two of the houses can accommodate up to 30 for dinner, so there’s plenty of space for communal feasting. bruern-holiday-cottages.co.uk
South Africa is a top pick when it comes to family travel and while Kruger is one of the best-known game reserves there, privately run Sabi Sands benefits from far less tourist traffic. Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge offers larger families a luxury home with wildlife on your doorstep, private plunge pools, vast living areas and fresh buffets for every meal. Between daily game drives, kids can get stuck into bushcraft activities at the EleFun Centre for four to 12 year olds, and there’s plenty of time and space to soak up the sunsets or gaze at the stars together. sabisabi.com

Bantham Beach, Devon
Ives and Trevone near Padstow are just a few of the popular Blue Flag beaches, while West Cornwall’s Porthcurno offers shallow waters that are perfect for paddling in. If you’re staying further south, Gyllyngvase in Falmouth boasts golden sand and beautiful gardens. Those staying in the north, should head to Polzeath where there’s an abundance of rock pools and a trampoline park. Level with the car park, the beach is easy to negotiate with a buggy.
DEVON When it comes to seaside spots, Devon has it all, from expansive sandy beaches and tiny pebbled coves to wild, windswept bays. The multi-award winning Blackpool Sands beach is the most famous of the bunch, with its crystal-clear waters, golden sand and gorgeous surroundings. There’s a safe swimming area for children, too, as well as sandpits and a seasonal lifeguard service. Further west, Bantham Beach is also appealing for families – the shallow, sloping sands allow safe splashing, while the nearby cafés offer respite from the sun. And if you’ve got a dog in tow, take
a trip to of North Sands in Salcombe: it welcomes pups throughout summer.
MALLORCA, SPAIN It’s easy to see why Mallorca is a perennial favourite with families – it’s packed with child-friendly attractions, places to stay and beaches to frequent. Port de Sóller is the only sandy beach on the island’s west coast, and its pedestrianised promenade is suitable for buggies. Playa del Port de Pollença is equally popular. Here you’ll find a long white beach, clear waters and an inflatable play park with bouncy castles and slides. However, if you’d rather avoid the crowds, Playa de Cala Pi is peaceful with plenty of shade.

Treat yourself to Caribbean sunshine on the sandy shores of Barbados! With shallow waters, soft white sand and an expansive playground, Accra Beach is the most popular spot for families. The southern end of the beach is particularly good for paddling, as it’s protected by rocks that break bigger waves. Similarly, Batts Rock on the west coast boasts calm shores, a beautiful reef and lifeguard supervision. But it’s Enterprise Beach that ticks the most boxes; a 250-yard-long strip of white sand with a wide selection of shaded areas, it’s easy to see why it’s highly favoured by the locals. The north side is calm with shallow waters, while the south side has big waves for surfers.

And it comes as no surprise, as there’s loads of fun to be had on and off the water, from upbeat island hopping on a luxury yacht, to kitesurfing and beach parties. You may even decide to buddy up with another family and create a flotilla, where a group of yachts sail together. Now, which direction? Different companies offer different routes, so it’s important to do your research, and keep in mind new routes are being added all the time. Typically flotillas sail around the Caribbean, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Mallorca, France and Turkey. Wherever you go, expect relaxed social settings, vibrant beach barbecues, warm water with ample swimming and snorkeling time, and plenty of newfound friends. If you find that you want more freedom, bareboat charter sailing – whereby no crew or provisions are included – may be more your style. ave your children reached an age where they want to trade sandcastles for something a little less sedate? If you have a real water baby on your hands, a surfing holiday may be just the ticket. Each child is different, but generally speaking, those aged around seven or eight are usually ready to embrace the ocean. Unless you’re a pro yourself, be sure to check them into surf school or organise private lessons – the sea has so much to offer but, of course, safety is paramount. Before you pack your passport, you may want to consider a coastal adventure closer to home. Cornwall has a plethora of beaches for surfing opportunists, plus a multitude of great surf schools. Britain’s very own ‘Surf City’, Newquay, has been attracting
thrillseekers for more than 80 years, with Fistral Beach coined as the birthplace of the British surf scene. If you’re after guaranteed sunshine, ripcurling waves and a short-haul flight, Portugal makes a brilliant destination for a family surf holiday. Try to visit during the summer months, when the waves are much calmer for beginners. For a safe place to start, and home to some of Portugal’s most consistent surf beaches and schools, try Peniche – around 50 miles north of Lisbon – or Ericeira, also located on the western coast. If you want to travel outside of Europe there are many options further afield, too. ith a heady mix of skiing, toboganning, boarding and other fun-filled activities, little ones will end every day of their skiing holiday feeling exhausted yet fulfilled, ensuring many good nights of sleep all round. You’ll find that most specialist family ski destinations are packed with nurseries, qualified nannies and instructors, plus they offer itineraries to keep everyone busy from morning until night. Our French neighbours strap on skis as soon as their children can walk, but you may want to wait until your child is about three years old. There are plenty of great ski schools available in the UK and abroad, with many resorts offering their own. If you choose private tuition, ensure they’re a

Family favourites include Val d’Isère, close to the Italian border; the glitzy Courchevel; and the car-free Avoriaz. Slightly further afield lies St Moritz in Switzerland, or the mountain village of Lech in Austria. Elsewhere, clock up airmiles by heading to the likes of Canada or Japan, both of which offer some great familyfriendly options. PARIS The sights: We started our tour with a boat trip on the Bateau Mouches (bateaux-mouches.fr). Starting near Pont de l’Alma, you’ll hear facts about all the famous sights, from Musée D’Orsay to Notre Dame on this 75-minute drift along the Seine. Once docked, we found our way to the Eiffel Tower, just a 15-minute stroll away. Booking in advance is essential if you want to ascend via the elevator but as we were feeling a little bit daring, so we took the stairs – definitely the highlight of the trip. the stay: Hotel 34B (en.astotel.com) in the 9th arrondissement is near Gare du Nord (perfect for the Eurostar) and Grand Boulevards metro station, offering easy access to all the sights. Housed in
an internal courtyard, complete with atrium, is a lounge where guests can help themselves to free soft drinks, tea, coffee and snacks all day; ideal after a long day of sightseeing (there’s even a complimentary in-room minibar). Chill-out time: During the summer, Jardin des Tuileries hosts an old-fashioned funfair but has trampolines and a carousel all year round, while Jardins du Luxembourg boasts marionette shows, pony rides and a bandstand. Hidden gems: We spent an hour at the Smallable concept store, checking out its trendy kids’ labels and design-focused room accessories. The Bonpoint atelier also makes an elegant outing – a Parisian townhouse showcasing the heritage of one of France’s favourite brands.
FAMILY COPENHAGEN The sights: Copenhagen feels like it has been designed with children in mind. In the summer, Tivoli Gardens is the smartest theme park you’ll ever visit, where restaurants have white linen tablecloths and flowerbeds burst with colour. We loved watching ballet dancers perform at the Chinese-inspired outdoor Peacock Theatre. Witness the changing of the guard at noon each day outside the Royal Family’s residence, Amalienborg Palace, then head to Rosenborg Castle in the King’s Garden for a real-life treasure hunt – tucked inside the castle are the crown jewels. We strolled down the colourful harbour street Nyhavn and hopped onto a canal tour boat. the stay: Style mavens will love the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel (radissonblu. com), designed by renowned Danish architect-designer, Arne Jacobsen. With suites kitted out in authentic Jacobsen furniture, it’s a mid-century masterpiece. It’s centrally located opposite Tivoli, just steps from the train station and close to shops and restaurants. Chill-out time: Take the train from the main station and visit the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (en.louisiana.dk), 35 minutes away, located on a cliff top with panoramic views of Sweden. Here, the Children’s Wing offers daily drop-in workshops, where kids can paint, draw and sculpt. There’s even a Lego room where we lost a couple of hours… Feast your eyes on Warhol, Hockney, Calder, Moore, Giacometti, Picasso and more. The space is now a children’s play park, with a toddler pool open on warm days. Skydebanehaven is one of Copenhagen’s staffed playgrounds – they won’t look after the children, but they will arrange activities such as sports tournaments and treasure hunts. Strolling the Marrakech souks was a morning ritual
MARRAKECH The sights: At its heart, Marrakech remains an ancient city of crumbling medina walls and winding cobbled alleyways. The best way to experience it is to walk through the souk, which we did happily with our children every morning. Passing residents dressed in the traditional djellaba (hooded gowns worn by men and women), the exotic character of the Red City revealed itself. Walk though Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square, at dusk as the muezzin sounds his call to prayer, and watch as the snake charmers, acrobats, fortune tellers and henna artists come to life. the stay: A pocket of peace in the glorious madness of Marrakech is Hotel Tigmiza (hotel-tigmizamarrakech.com), a luxury, familyowned hideaway in the nearby Palmeraie offering decorative family suites with private pools. If you’re after a hotel with a more international feel, the Four Seasons (fourseasons.com/marrakech) is superb, as is its fun kids’ club, which was designed by a local Moroccan

toymaker, whose colourful mural artwork adorns the walls. Chill-out time: The Majorelle Gardens, restored by Yves Saint Laurent, offer a shady and calm retreat. For a cultured antidote to the hustle and bustle of the souk, visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa – a Quranic school full of decorative pools and intricately tiled courtyards. Hidden gems: Take a dip in the inviting pool and strike a pose at the Beldi Country Club (beldicountryclub.com) where model Poppy Delevingne got hitched – it’s cool, bohemian and even child-friendly. For hassle-free shopping, check out the barter-free Souk Cherifia (souk-cherifia.com). Fancy something a bit different? Check out the dreamy Anima Garden (anima-garden.com).

The Campanile di San Marco offers panoramic views of the city’s islands
VENICE The sights: Venice is a destination best seen by boat. The locals use the vaporetto (it’s like the tube, but on water) and it didn’t take long to navigate our way around. However, queuing for the sights in peak season with two children was never going to be an option, so we improvised! Instead of going in to St Mark’s Basilica, we went up the bell tower, Campanile di San Marco, next to it. With a lift providing quick access to the top, we started our day with a panoramic view of the geography of the city (more than 118 islands). We then followed the crowds through the little streets to the Grand Canal and famous Rialto Bridge. the stay: The JW Marriott (marriott. com) is the ideal family accommodation.
Located a 20-minute ride away from the hub of St Mark’s Square (there’s a complimentary shuttle service every half an hour), this five-star hotel on Isola delle Rose is a tranquil antidote to the mayhem of Venice mainland. Chill-out time: There’s a cleverly designed adventure playground next door to the hotel pool, so we didn’t even leave our sun loungers as the kids set off exploring. Alternatively, take a boat to the Lido where the seven-mile-long beach faces the Adriatic sea. Hidden gem: One day we toured with a local guide from Abercrombie & Kent (abercrombiekent.co.uk), which made all the difference. From visiting the oldest gondola yard to mask-making with respected artisans, we discovered the city’s beating heart.

Harlow and Harlen loved Turks & Caicos’ sandy beaches
Chelsea loves this brand’s great selection of colours and prints for kids Short-sleeve rash vest £38, sunuva.com
MY TRAVELS
How do you like to spend your days when you’re away? I tend to hire a car so we can see the sights and visit any cool locations that I’ve seen on Insta! I do as much research as I can to find out what the destination has to offer the kids. I try to plan the days around them with lots of experiences. At home we’re always on the go, so holidays are all about fun.
CHELSEA WHITE
We catch up with one of Instagram’s most-followed mums to talk family holidays, how to pack and long-haul flying with kids Turks & Caicos we took a boat to a private island – now that was paradise! When the view and sea is as good as that, you can’t beat the beach. We’re going to the Maldives next year, it’ll be the first time we spend every day at the beach. Leather rucksack £265, jemandbea.com
Top tips for flying with kids? Wear a backpack so both hands are free around the airport – in mine I store nappies, wipes and a change of clothes. I always take pyjamas and socks for the kids to wear on the flight, and their backpacks are for their toys and games. We take iPads so the kids can watch films, plus a lunch box of healthy snacks. I haven’t travelled without our BabyZen Yoyo stroller since I discovered that it fits in the overhead lockers. Do you ever go away without Harlow and Harlen? Only a few work trips. I’ve not been on an actual holiday without them since they were born. I’d much rather enjoy experiences with them! What’s next on the hit list? The Beaches Resort in Jamaica, then Dubai, the Maldives and Aruba!
