Community called on for Carrum crossing cull Brodie Cowburn brodie@baysidenews.com.au THE Level Crossing Removal Authority has called for Carrum residents to join a “Stakeholder Liaison Group” to help provide feedback and share information about level crossing removal works at Carrum train station. The LXRA put a list of criteria on their website that an ideal candidate for the group would be able to fulfill. That list included having “strong community networks and linkages,” a

“demonstrated ability to constructively participate in an advisory capacity,” and a “good knowledge and understanding of the local issues that are relevant to the project”. Major works are now underway to remove the level crossing at Station Street, which will result in buildings such as Seacombe House, Beach Lane, and Face the Art being torn down. The $50 million “revitalisation” works in the area will add a new park and town square next to the station. Pedestrian access to Patterson River from the new Karrum Karrum bridge

between Carrum and Bonbeach has also been cut off while works are underway. When asked how long the works would take, Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny said “2019 is going to be a big year in Carrum with major works to remove the level crossings already underway. A worksite along Eel Race Road has been established and safety barriers are up along Station Street as construction starts on the temporary rail track which will run from the Patterson River to Eel Race Road. Like we did at Seaford Road, the construc-

tion of a temporary rail track will allow trains to keep running while the works are taking place.” “Trains are expected to be using the temporary track from mid 2019 while the existing train storage yard in Carrum is decommissioned and relocated to a temporary train storage area within the rail corridor between Miles Grove and Kananook Station, before the Kananook train storage facility is operating in late 2020,” she said. “Over the next few months, work will continue on both ramps at the Karrum Karrum bridge, as well as

widening the walking and cycling path along the river. The ramp on the Bonbeach side of the river will be open by late February, with the ramp on the Carrum side open in April.” Divisive works on the Eel Race Road level crossing removal are not set to begin until after the current batch of works. “Access via Eel Race Road will remain until after the new McLeod Road extension and intersection has been constructed,” Ms Kilkenny said.
