written statement Our final project was designing a cookbook. This was definitely my favorite project this semester. This project was challenging, yet was also a lot of fun. I really enjoyed creating a cookbook. Being that I have dietary restrictions, I was able to focus my cookbook around these, and compiling some of my favorite recipes. I have become very passionate about the foods that I eat, and learning about new foods, combinations, and ways to get creative without using gluten or dairy. This allowed me to bring all of that into a book. It was a very rewarding project in the end. I enjoy having tactile items, and think viewing it once it is printed will be even better. This project was a culmination of all we have experimented and learned with typography and In design, and bringing it together to create a successful piece. I think everyone definitely learned much more about In design with this project. We knew some of the basics, and were able to experiment last semester and with the first project, but now we had to apply everything. Learning it this way, though, was much more interesting, especially when creating a final piece, than doing experimental layouts. It greatly refined and built upon the skills of the class. I first compiled some of my favorite recipes, and broke these down into different sections. I ended up with five sections, consisting of smoothies and bowls, breakfast, small bites, entrees, and desserts. The minimum was ten recipes, but I wanted to include four recipes in each section, so I ended up with twenty recipes. I also included a section of “super foods, highlighting the many beneficial aspects of certain health foods, and why they are important to include in your everyday diet. After figuring out how I wanted to style the book, which fonts to use and adjusting my color palette, I needed photographs. I figured I should take them myself so they would feel coherent in the book, and match one another. I feel the photos brought life and color to the book, and definitely added the most interest. My biggest struggles with this project were mainly figuring out certain tools and capabilities of In design. Keeping everything organized and in specific styles helped to maintain consistency, and made it much easier to make adjustments. As with anything, it will just be a task of continuing to practice using and learning the functions of In design to refine my skills. I feel like this is a project that I would continuously like adding recipes too and eventually creating a full collection of different recipes. Overall I was very satisfied with my final design. I feel it is working successfully, and is interesting and informative. I really enjoyed this assignment.
