project brief Project Overview In this project students will be required to work through several exercises to create a framework for a mobile application. Students will be required to show a cumulative understanding of typographic design. New opportunities for exploring hierarchical grids will be explored. Project Objectives Create a conceptual design plan for an application used to walk/explore the Town of Fredonia. Create a twelve page minimum process booklet

The initial task of this project was ot go out an explore Fredonia, while documenting your trip. Starting st Barker Commons, I went down near the Firehouse and Gas Well, walked along Canadaway Creek, then back down Temple Street to lead my jorney back to the beginning. I wanted to include places with some historical content, as well as appreciate the beauty of nature along the creek to Rhinehoudt Bridge. I took photographs to document my trip and the locations I wanted to include in my application.

Using Google map to create a basic outline of streets. I then outlined this street view and created a color overlay of my traveled path.
Map I included in my first version of the application design. This was a full overview outlining all locations available on the guided app tour.
This zoomed in version was showing how the viewer can zoom into different areas of the map to get a closer look at the various locations.

Near here on April 16, 1868, farmers organized the first grange to champion their needs in the healing of the nation recovering from Civil War. Fredonia became the home of the first dues-paying grange. The United States' first grange hall was constructed in here in Fredonia. This original building can be visited on Main Street, downtown Fredonia.

evaluation The creation of a mobile app was an enjoyable project. We were able to apply the fundamentals of typography that we have learned to something relevant to our everyday lives. This made the project fun, and it was useul to view the app on the iphone as I went along to get a better idea of how the design was working. My objective with the app creation was to essentially create a “tour guide for travelers visiting the Fredonia area. Not only will the application lead them around the area, highlighting both historical locations and the natural beauty, but there are further recommendations for hotels and restaurants in the area. I wanted to create an overall guide that would allow them to interact and explore the area, while receiving all the information they may need on a trip. When selecting a location, the viewer will be led to another page, including a picture and background information. I decided to use historical photographs when possible, and make them black and white, as to not distract from the design. This gives that historical sense, and works within the color palette. I decided to work with muted, cooler colors. This gave a sense of tranquility. The exploration is meant to be fun and relaxing, with an old world vibe, learning about the historical buildings and events of Fredonia. I think these colors are working successfully to convey this idea, and tie the app together well. Overall, I feel the end design is working successfully. The design is very cohesive and interacts with the viewer, while also providing other useful information. The stylized map works successfully to tie into the design of the application, while becoming more visually interesting and pleasing. The largest adjustments made throughout the design of the app were getting rid of the bubble shapes around each location and turning them into boxes. Looking back, the shapes were constricting and distracting. Changing the design to simply a box is cleaner, and more concise. I also worked with adjusting the typefaces. The Ostrich Sans display typeface, used for the location names and menu items, is a very narrow font. While I prefer this look, it can become difficult to read. I worked with opening up the tracking and adjusting the kerning between certain characters to allow an easier read. If I were to go back and make changes, i would like to further create pages for what a restaurant or hotel review would look like. I would like to see more pages. It would be fun to continue the design and fully finish it. With any design, there can be small adjustments made to make the design feel more finished.
