PORTFOLIO by Chelsie R. Cocjin

ABOUT ME Born and raised in the Philippines, I am an architectural graduate zealous about art and design. I believe in its vital role in our society to provide solutions, incite emotions and challenge innovation. With my eagerness to learn, and ability to connect with people I have explored different platforms, approaches and perspectives in the design process. Attaining a chance to contribute to your company will greatly help me grow as a designer and feed my passion for knowledge and creativity.

THE PEAK SANCTUARY

A phenomenological approach in design that uses watercolor to explore the experiential and atmospheric qualities of a space

SALIKNETA FARM HOSTEL A team of student designers developed a design proposal for a multi-hectare property of a private agrivet science institute. One goal was to promote agri-tourism by providing world-class accommodation that responds to culture & environment.

A hostel type accommodation slashes lodging costs for tourists and encourages communal living that aims to exemplify the generous and hospitable nature of Filipinos

Designed to accommodate multiple communal spaces including large dining halls, outdoor cooking areas & swimming pools; guests are encouraged to congregate and admire the rural landscape.

PACO 50 Paco 50 is a design exploration on the evolution of Paco, Manila in the next 50 years. The project speculates a rapid growth of informal settlements based on the increasing informal economy in the area

in a hyper-dense & over urbanized society, the lack of horizontal space may evolve into informal vertical housing built on existing structures

Paco 50 aims to embrace the informal community as a natural phenomenon of urban cities. Tactical urban interventions in informal neighborhoods such as civic centers & urban farms can help mitigate problems and blur psychological and physical boundaries

To help improve the existing site the design team responded to three major aspects: context, client & creativity. Public to private progression of spaces is defined by (1) circulation, (2) volume, and (3) permeability. This effective use of space creates spatial boundaries within a limited area.

Lighting and furniture design are part of the design considerations that help dictate the separation between spaces for work and resting

THE PENINSULA To influence urban promotion and global investment in a developing commercial area in Quezon City, Philippines the students designed a balanced mixed-used hotel & convention center

The site development plan relates to context by projecting multiple access areas & establishing anchor points that creates the irregular forms of the podium

Irregular geometry is modeled precisely through computer numerical control (CNC) laser cutting

INTRAMUROS STUDENT VILLAGE the design team sought to create a interdisciplinary research and workshop lab that could cultivate and further the talents of university students in the community; effectively opening opportunities for Intramuros, Manila, Philippines to move forward as a city beyond a living museum.

The Village aims to help students learn unique ways of thinking through a multidisciplinary approach. With the programs, and the envelope coming together, the periphery of the Aduana site becomes a cultural space for the public.

MOMENTUM: AUGMENTING CONTEMPLATIVE SPACE DESIGN USING KINETIC ARCHITECTURE

An undergraduate architectural thesis that explores a creative typology that aims to mitigate stress in Metro Manila's Youth

ITERATION 1: CONCENTRIX

An integrated contemplative space in a high-stress Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) company that explores relationship between individual and space

Design parameters include a design pool for contemplative space strategies combined with kinetic elements. The produced typology aims to create a Restorative Environment that measurably mitigates stress

ITERATION 2: LPU MANILA CAMPUS

An integrated contemplative space in a high-stress university environment that explores relationship between community and space

Kinetic elements use tools such as Grasshopper scripts to create parametric design that moves according to natural movements such as sine waves

ITERATION 3: UST HOSPITAL

An integrated contemplative space in a high-stress teaching hospital environment that explores relationship between divinity and space

THESIS STATEMENT

The rising stress levels in Metro Manila's urban environment can be alleviated by providing restorative contemplative spaces. The lack of open space and shift into reflexive spirituality of the youth suggests an innovative typology for contemplative architecture. By exploring the concept of designing motion in space through kinetic “liveliness an artificial and secular contemplative landscape may provide restorative potential from stress that is equivalent to a natural environment

3D modelling proficiency both in manual and CNC fabrication

Visual merchandising for fashion retailing
