Heritage Open Day Saturday 10 September, 9.00am & 2.00pm, Chapel and Thirlestaine House Founded in 1841, Cheltenham College was the first of the great Victorian boarding schools. From 9.00am – 12.00pm the magnificent neo-gothic chapel will be open
and there will be tours of the main 1843 building, including the library and theatre. The last tour will leave from the chapel at 11.30am. From 2.00pm – 4.00pm, Thirlestaine Long Gallery in the adjacent Thirlestaine House will be open. Created in the 1840s by Lord Northwick to house his collection of paintings, its elegant classical style provides a contrast to other College buildings. Please join us to explore Cheltenham College’s buildings, no booking required.
Deceiving the Scholars Monday 12 September, 7.00pm Big Classical A lecture by Mr Daniel Evans, History of Art teacher at Cheltenham College, will cover the terrible mistakes, apparent forgeries and possible cover-ups in the art world. Featuring works by Simone Martini, Diego Velázquez and Michelangelo, find out how misinterpretation and misattribution of art can lead to stony silence, violence, and even arrest!
Choral Evensong and Organ Recital Wednesday 21 September, 6.00pm & 7.00pm, Cheltenham College Chapel Choral evensong will be sung by the Cheltenham College Schola Cantorum, followed by an organ recital by Ashley Grote. Repertoire will include works by Parry, Bach, Mozart, Elgar, and Wagner. Ashley is the Master of Music at Norwich Cathedral and much in demand as a recitalist; he has performed throughout the UK, USA and Europe with recent concerts in Italy, Germany and Sweden. His first solo disc, of organ symphonies by Louis Vierne, was described by Gramophone magazine as a “top-notch recording”. As a composer and arranger of organ and choral works, he has been published by Oxford University Press and Encore.
