Headmaster's Blog

Dear Parents Half Term has arrived and you won’t be surprised to receive the usual requests, advice and recommendations. Probably the most important is the need to enjoy a Half Term which has a balance between work, play and rest. And I do hope that parents too will be able to enjoy a little extra time with their children. Please do not be surprised to know that we teachers are aware that such generous holidays are not available to everyone and we try hard to empathise with those to whom such breaks are unavailable. The first half of term has been a successful one and I do feel that we have laid the foundations for a strong academic year. If, on the other hand, you feel that your child has not started as well as he/she might have hoped for, please seek a meeting with his/her form teacher/tutor as soon as possible after Half Term. The second half of term will flash by and before long we will be singing carols! Therefore, it is important that your child is making the most of the academic challenges and opportunities in this, the longest term.

I am very grateful to the Friends of The Prep for their efforts thus far. We enjoyed a splendid quiz night and the cookery book has gone to print. My special thanks to Mrs Fielden for her drive, skill, energy and enthusiasm which has ensured that this project has got off the ground. The winner of the raffle, which will see me cook a meal for six or eight in their own home, is Lesley Dessalles. Congratulations! SallyAnn will be in touch to arrange a mutually convenient date. There is much to look forward to in all aspects of school life when we return and I have no doubt that the children will embrace all that will be on offer. Mr Jon Whybrow Headmaster

Diwali Day Kingfishers celebrated Diwali with an array of exciting activities. Year 2 enjoyed opening the special "India Box" and learning fascinating facts about the country. Year 1 spent a very entertaining hour making different Indian dishes. They had the opportunity to sample the different foods and some were definitely more popular than others. Reception learnt stick dancing and had the chance to perform the routines they had practised. In the Nursery they tried on different Indian costumes. It was a great morning for all the children.

Kingfishers Update

Year 1 Trip to Montpellier Gardens As part of their topic work, the children in Year 1 enjoyed a walk to Montpellier Gardens to observe and discuss the human and physical features of their environment. They also had time to sketch a drawing, using their art skills to good effect! Prep for The Week Issue Number 1872 20 October 2017

Lower School Update A fabulous final week before the end of this first half of term. Our Lower School pupils have once again been at their busiest, actively learning. Year 3 Maths was very practical this week: whilst some were outside measuring the rugby pitch in metres with trundle wheels, others were busy taking measurements of the furniture in the classrooms using metre sticks. By the end of the week, everyone had a better understanding of units of measure, relationships between units and how to measure accurately. Meanwhile Year 4 were busy writing fantasy stories. Using story plans that they talk through with each other several times, Year 4 really knew the stories they wanted to write. When it comes to creative writing, our Lower School pupils always use their personal targets to make sure that they are striving to achieve their best. Whether it is adding connectives, using INSPACE starters, writing Alan Peat sentences, every time they write, they aim to include and achieve their personal target. Of course, once our stories are written, Year 4 are always keen to edit and improve. We help each other and also work alone to check we have met our success criteria, polish our stories and be really proud of them. Fridays always finish on a high note with our early morning Wake and Shake. Getting everyone’s toes tapping, arms swinging and legs kicking, we all enjoy joining in with the fun and start our Fridays with a real buzz. As we arrive at Half Term, we know that everyone has put the maximum effort into their teaching and learning during the first half of term. We are all looking forward to a good rest and relaxation to recharge those batteries and we wish you all a safe and enjoyable Half Term.

Messages from the Health Centre Tuesday saw a busy day for Dr Ropner and the Health Centre team. Over 155 members of College Staff from all departments availed themselves of the opportunity to be vaccinated against seasonal flu. We hope that given the high uptake of staff along with the recently vaccinated Reception to Year 4 children we can reduce the potential for transmission of this nasty bug. The winter season is almost upon us, and with it comes an increase in infectious diseases. If your child is showing symptoms of being unwell, with a high temperature, any diarrhoea or vomiting, please can we ask that you keep them away from school in order to protect the wider college community. These bugs need little encouragement to take hold given the opportunity. Health Centre staff will be reminding children about the importance of effective hand washing, and will be teaching them about 'Catch It, Kill It, Bin It' for the use of tissues. Please can we ask you to further remind them. Please can we take this opportunity for you to check your children's hair for lice over the break and treat as necessary. If you would like any advice on this please see this useful link https://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Head-lice/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Year 7 Acrylic Peer mentoring, looking after our community paintings and doing our bit for the Prep Award Scheme

This week in our Section Assembly we were joined by Peer Mentors Josh Yang, Imogen Mansell-King and Ben Cunningham. Peer mentors are Year 8 pupils who have undergone training so Inspired by the Birds of Prey who visited that they can help support pupils with friendships, school life or The Prep at the beginning of term, pupils listen to any other worries that younger pupils may have. Pupils will know they are because they wear a special yellow badge from Year 7 have been working on awho new on their blazer. Josh, Imogen and Ben have also agreed to come art project. and be reading buddies with Year 5 on Wednesdays. Whilst it is clear to see how much mutual benefit there is in Based on the visit from Hawkeye Falconry, helping each other, Middle School pupils have been thinking about what the class had to crop the image androles they could do in order to support teachers and pupils in other areas of the school. If any pupils are interested in enlarge it from an original observational helping, I have put up a list of suitable roles that you can sign up outside drawing. They used acrylic for paint inMS Office – from supporting pupils in Kingfisher at break-times or with their reading, to running a Lower School book contemporary colours to create a modern clubs in the Library, or helping out in the Art room. Year 6 History Mr Bass’ Year 6 classes have been learning about Martin Luther and the Reformation this week as part of their study on Henry VIII’s quarrel with the church. What better way to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther than to have a lookalike competition. Here are some of the entries!

Musical Masterclass from Nicholas McCarthy Monday saw an inspirational talk and performance by Nicholas McCarthy. He played to the whole school in our assembly, and then had separate sessions with Middle School and Upper School, finishing off with a masterclass for some of our music award holders who have the piano as their main instrument. Nicholas is a concert pianist, performing all over the world. He has given TED talks at the Royal Albert Hall and performed alongside Coldplay at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 paralympic games. The thing that makes Nicholas unique is that he was born without his right hand! He is the only one-handed pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music in London in its 130-year history, and he plays the piano with one hand better than most people that have two hands! He gave the children much to consider in his talks with regards to resilience, perseverance, overcoming challenges in life and not letting anyone put you off your dreams. He was leaving us at lunchtime to have a business meeting about a future date at the Cheltenham Festival – so if you see his name advertised in due course, do make an effort to see him. It would be time well spent.

Boa Sunday Trip to Drayton Manor On Sunday the Boarders spent the day at Drayton Manor Theme Park. There was much excitement in the run up to the trip, from the Gap Students as much as the Boarders! Groups were split in terms of the level of 'thrill seeking' required by the Boarders, some groups spent more time in the shop and at the farm while others spent their time being thrown around on roller coasters. There was time for a quick packed lunch and a break, then back to the fun. Pocket money was well spent in the shop, mainly on edible treats and a group of tired Boarders returned to school in time for tea. Many thanks to Miss Cox and the brilliant Gap Students for running the trip and allowing everyone to have a fun time.

Harry Potter Themed Supper On Tuesday evening the Boarders were treated to a Harry Potter themed supper. There were many pairs of round glasses and lightning scars to be seen as we tucked into some tasty soup, served out of pumpkins, and selected our puddings from a lucky dip witch's hat. The decorations were fantastic and it definitely felt like we were at Hogwarts enjoying an atmospheric banquet. There was a fiercely competitive Harry Potter quiz devised by one of our Potter obsessed Matrons! An amazing display of knowledge and determination was shown by many of the Boarders, however Carys came out on top with 100% correct (including the bonus question of naming all the original members of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team!). There was also an impressive amount of Potter memorabilia on display, as can be seen in the photos. Massive thanks go to Jake and the rest of the catering team for going above and beyond to make a memorable evening for the Boarders, as well as to Mrs Keen for her enthusiasm and Harry Potter quiz.

GIRLS' SPORT U11 IAPS Regionals On Friday, the U11 girls hockey squad departed for the IAPS tournament at Millfield. With 4 other teams in our pool, we kicked off our tournament against Westonbirt, an unknown opposition. Still getting the journey out of our legs, we took a few minutes to switch on during the match, however, with some lovely passages of play, we managed to come away with a 2-0 win to start our campaign. Next up was Wycliffe whom we dominated for the whole match, but could only score past their keeper twice. Unfortunately, Wellington school put up stiff competition, and although we managed to put some positive runs of play together out wide, we went down 3-0. We upped our game against Truro, in our final pool match, and managed to slot 7 in the back of the goal; thanks mostly to some good team play with our midfield keeping the ball moving to the wings. Coming top in the pool meant we had earned a place in the quarter finals, against the 2nd place of another pool - there were some very excited girls, along with our band of supporters, who had made the trek to Millfield! The QF game against Dean Close was a struggle, and after going 1-0 down not long into the half, we struggled to gain any momentum or time on the ball, and ended up chasing the game. The girls put up a great fight, but unfortunately were beaten 3-1 by a better, stronger side on the day. This then meant we carried on for another 2 games to fight out final placings, and in a 0-0 draw against Monkton, we ended with a respectable 5th place out of 22 in the region. Each of the girls gave their all, continually tried their best and ran themselves into the ground in each match. We couldn’t have asked any more of them, and they should be extremely proud of their performance. Thanks also goes to Tim Lang for his tactical talks, umpiring and general positive hockey chat with the girls. The following day, there was no rest for the girls and we were off again, this time to Bromsgrove for their annual tournament. There were some tired legs and, as we were down a player through illness, the girls had to play every game: four 20 minute games back to back, against Bromsgrove B (3-0 win), Abberley (0-0 draw), Fairfield (3-0 win) and Bromsgrove A (2-0 win). An outstanding effort from all of the girls, and justified victors. Well done girls!
