Lower School News Year 3 have been busy researching Greek architecture and in particular the influence the Greek style had on architects in this country. Visiting TLG over at College enabled the children to see Greek influenced architecture up close and the children were great at identifying doric and ionic columns.

Keep up to date Make sure you’re following Lower School on twitter (@CheltPrepLower) to keep up to date with all of the latest activities we’re getting up to!

In Enrichment this week, Year 3 risk assessed the space outside Lower School in order to find the best and safest spot for our base camp. Once decided upon, the children worked together to collect all the scattered tree stumps and set up their own base camp complete with a log pile in the middle to represent a fire pit. The children loved being outside despite the cold and learned how to set up free standing structures using twine, tape, tent pegs and sticks. They are beginning to use square lashing to tie sticks together and all managed to build a structure. On Thursday the children visited Bath Road in order to draw a sketch map and study how the land is used. One group were even lucky enough to receive free pens and keyrings from a local shop! The children were amazed at how many food and drink places there are on Bath Road!

2019 - Our Year of Reading Caught You Reading Here at The Prep, we love to catch our pupils reading. All pupils have regular access to the Library, with the majority of pupils also having weekly Library lessons. Such is their love of reading, many of our pupils also love to read at breaktimes, lunchtimes and during other opportunities across the school day. For this reason, we introduced our Caught You Reading initiative last year. All staff carry Caught You Reading slips which they fill in and give to pupils when they catch them reading. These slips then go in the Caught You Reading box in the Library, and a prize is given to one lucky winner, drawn out weekly by Mr O’Sullivan. You have to be in it, to win it!

This week’s Caught You Reading Winner is...

Reader of the Week Congratulations to this week’s Reader of the Week... Ava B Prep for The Week Issue Number 1912 25 January 2019

Each week, staff in the English department, together with Miss Richardson, our Librarian, nominate one pupil who has made particular progress with, or shown genuine commitment to, their private reading.

Eco-Committee trip to FGR On Tuesday The Prep’s Eco-Committee, along with our counterparts at St John’s Primary School visited the New Lawn, home of Forest Green Rovers FC, on a sustainability fact-finding mission. After arriving we were given an introduction on how the club is run to environmentally conscious principles and how it is now being cited by the UN as the world’s best example of how to merge sports with sustainable development. After a typical match day lunch (vegan, of course), we held a pre-match press conference in the Media Suite, had a tour of the stadium and the dressing rooms - whilst constantly learning how everything around the club is done with the environment in mind - from fertiliser-free grass and solar powered lawnmowers, to rainwater being recycled in the WCs! Lots of questions and ideas were discussed, and all of the children came away with lots of things to think about implementing around their school. Our next Eco-Committee meeting will be very busy!

House D&T Competition The Design and Technology House Competition was very kindly sponsored by Mr Norman via his company, Genie Ltd. The calibre and number of entries surpassed last years, which made the judges job that much more exciting and challenging. Like last year, Sparta were more than up to the task and have continued their monopoly on the Genie D&T House Cup, will anyone be able to prise it from their clutches next year? Jasper P won the Lower School Prize with ‘Who let the dogs out?’, an adaption of ‘Cluedo’. Sofia G won the Middle School section with ‘Sky High’ and Nicholas P and Fred B were joint winners of Upper School with ‘Pentoids’ and ‘Toppling Towers’, respectively. Thank you to everyone who entered for the myriad of entries, well done. We now look forward to next year’s challenge. Please do pass through the corridor on your way to the Dining Hall and stop to look at the children’s creative work on display.

Diving Success Over the Christmas holidays, after much self-studying during a very busy Autumn term, Olivia passed her PADI theory exam. She then did a confinedwater skills test, followed by 4 qualifying dives, to become a PADI certified Open Water Diver. Congratulations Olivia!

Sport Update Cross-Country runners through to English Schools Race On Sunday Isla-Rose and Max ran in the cross-country County Championship race at Newent. The race gave them the only opportunity to qualify for the prestigious English Schools National Cross-Country race at the end of March. They needed to finish in the top 10. Max ran fantastically well over the 3.1km course in tough conditions and gradually made up places through the race and ended up finishing in a wonderful 9th place. Isla-Rose was unbelievable in her race (3.1km as well). She started well and within the first km took the lead. She continued to look strong and increased her lead over the course of the race and with 1km left it was clear that she was not in any danger and she cruised to victory to win by over a minute!! She received a winners’ medal for her efforts and is now the 2019 County Champion! Therefore, both Isla-Rose and Max have qualified to run for Gloucestershire at the English Schools National Cross-Country race which will be held in Loughborough on Saturday 23 March.

And finally... Dear Parents As we reach the first Exeat of term, I am delighted to say we have lots to celebrate on the sporting front. Our U11A girls and U13B girls both won their respective Severnside Netball tournaments on Wednesday. A very impressive achievement. Isla-Rose and Max, both from Year 7, have also both qualified for the National Cross-Country finals, which is amazing. Isla-Rose won her race and so is also the County Champion! Alongside some fantastic hockey, a brilliant performance in the swimming gala and any number of other visible successes the Spring Term has really started with a bang. Our potential music scholars gave a wonderful concert on Monday night, playing and singing all of the pieces they were to perform the following day in the scholarship exams. They all impressed with the quality of their playing

Kingfisher Assembly. We always have a lot of fun and this week was particularly entertaining thanks to Roald Dahl’s revoltingly wonderful ‘Goldisocks and the Wee Bears’, a new take for them all on the old fairy tale. It’s always such a brilliant start to my Thursday and it really sets me up for a good day - the Kingfisher children’s enthusiasm and sense of fun is infectious.
