Choral Society Brahms Requiem/ Haydn St Nicholas Mass Saturday 16 January, College Chapel, 7.00pm Following the success of last year’s performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’, this year the Choral Society are combining with the College Chapel Choir and Prep School Chamber Choir in a performance of Brahms’ ‘German Requiem’ and Haydn’s ‘St Nicholas Mass’. Choral Evensong and Organ Recital Wednesday 20 January, College Chapel, 6.00pm Gordon Busbridge was a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral under Dr Allan Wicks, with whom he also studied the organ when a Music Scholar at the King’s School, Canterbury. From 1976 - 1979 he was Organ Scholar at Norwich Cathedral and read Music at the University of East Anglia. This was followed by one year’s postgraduate study at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. In addition to playing on BBC Radio, he has given recitals in many cathedrals, including Canterbury, St. Paul’s, Durham, Ely, Lincoln, Westminster Abbey, York Minster, King’s College, Cambridge etc. He was Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Bedford School from 1984 - 1994, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, where he was the first Gerald Knight Prizewinner at the Choir Training (ChM) examination. In 1990 he was awarded the Archbishop’s Diploma in Church Music by Dr Robert Runcie at
Orchestral Concert Monday 1 February, Big Classical, 7.30pm Antonín Dvořák’s mighty ‘8th Symphony’ is the centrepiece of this evening’s performance, and the focus of the Symphony Orchestra’s preparation this year. The concert will also include movements from local composer Gustav Holst’s ‘St Paul’s Suite’ and performances from some of College’s senior Chamber Ensembles.
Lambeth Palace, and in 1992 he was awarded the M. Mus degree in English Church Music with distinction by the University of East Anglia. From 1994 - 2014 he was Director of Music at Cheltenham College, especially developing the choral side, taking the Chapel Choir to sing in many places including St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, St George’s Chapel, Windsor, Siena Cathedral, St Mark’s Venice and the Basilica of San Antonio in Padua, and establishing the regular public services of Choral Evensong in the College Chapel.
Showcase London Concert Tuesday 9 February, Cadogan Hall, 7.30pm Celebrating 175 years of Music at College, The Music Departments from both College and the Prep School will be performing in one of London’s most prestigious venues. Featuring the Orchestras, Jazz, Choirs and Chamber Music, this performance will also highlight whole school music and combined performances with the winner of the House Singing Competition and joint large-scale works.
Velasquez’s Las Meninas Reinterpreted Wednesday 10 February, Big Classical, 7.00pm Dr Jacqueline Cockburn is a freelance lecturer and former Head of History of Art at Westminster School, specialising in European Art History. She works with a number of institutions such as Christie’s Education as well as writing and lecturing. She will be giving a lecture on Velasquez and Picasso’s versions of ‘Las Meninas’.

Wednesday 2 March, College Chapel, 6.00pm Organist Andrew Millington Andrew Millington’s career in Cathedral music has spanned some forty years, most recently as Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral (1999-2015). He held the conductorship of several notable choirs in the Midlands, two of which won major awards in the BBC competition ‘Let the Peoples Sing’.
The Cheltenham College Subscription Concert Series invites acclaimed professional soloists and ensembles to perform within College. The Derek Paravicini Quartet is the new must-hear group, currently wowing audiences all over the UK, following their successful debut on the BBC’s ‘In Tune’ programme. Four stunningly talented young musicians combine to create a unique sound, portraying a kaleidoscope of emotions – now achingly sad, now humorous, now infused with warmth – and all shot through with a fiery virtuosity. Tickets are available from boxoffice@cheltenhamcollege.org at £25/£15/£10 per performance, or £40/£25/£15 for the two remaining concerts in this year’s series to include The Tallis Scholars’ concert on Friday 22 April. All tickets include some complimentary drinks.
Since his arrival at Exeter, his work with the Cathedral Choir has included several broadcasts and recordings and highly successful tours of Russia, France, Norway and USA. He has been awarded honorary diplomas by the Guild of Church Musicians and the Royal School of Church Music. In 2003, he was appointed Director of Music of Exeter Philharmonic Choir and has conducted them in many of the major choral/orchestral works. He is an active composer of church music and has had many works published. In 2015 he stepped down from his post at Exeter in order to pursue freelance musical activities and much neglected hobbies.
Evensong at St George’s Chapel Wednesday 16 March, Windsor Castle, 5.15pm The Chapel Choir are privileged to be singing evensong in the magnificent Chapel of St George within the precincts of Windsor Castle. Music will feature Stanford’s ‘Magnificat’ and ‘Nunc Dimittis’, together with seasonal anthems.
The Tallis Scholars Subscription Concert Series Friday 22 April, College Chapel, 7.30pm The Tallis Scholars is a professional British early music vocal ensemble with a core group of ten singers. They specialise in Renaissance a cappella sacred music and will be performing Thomas Tallis’ 40 part motet ‘Spem in Alium’. SATIPS National Prep Schools Art Exhibition Saturday 23 April - Friday 6 May Cheltenham College Preparatory School is delighted to be hosting the SATIPS National Prep School art exhibition which runs for two weeks from 23 April to 6 May 2016. SATIPS showcases an inspiring and heart warming collection of artwork by Reception to Year 8 pupils from schools up and down the country.
