Book It! For Schools 2013 working with Nelson Thornes Welcome to Book It! For Schools 2013. The School programme brings a real vibrancy to the Festival weekdays, with thousands of pupils buzzing around the site absorbed in all things literary, engaging with authors and getting stuck into exciting workshops. We are delighted to be the education partner once again for The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival. As one of the UK’s leading educational publishers, we are passionate about encouraging young minds to develop a love for reading and storytelling, which is why we continue to build on our rewarding partnership with the Education department at Cheltenham Festivals. This year we are delighted that the enthralling programme of activities planned for your pupils is being enhanced by a brand new event designed specifically for teachers. This one-day workshop, organised by Nelson Thornes with the support of Cheltenham Festivals, will bring together three gurus of the education industry: Pie Corbett, Tim Rylands and David Mitchell, for what promises to be a thoroughly stimulating and unforgettable training extravaganza! Another exciting new feature which we are proud to support is Diana Bell’s Big Book ‘Imagine’, which will be coming to the Literature Festival for the first time in 2013. This enormous 2.2m high book, in which children and adults can release their imaginations in words, is guaranteed to attract and engage all visitors, young and old. We hope that you and your pupils will be inspired to take part in this year’s Festival, and that you will enjoy exploring all the different opportunities that it provides. Whether you bring a few pupils or a whole year group, and attend for one hour or stay for the day, we look forward to welcoming you in October. Richard Hodson Managing Director Nelson Thornes

New This Year We’ve listened to your feedback and know that lots of schools would like to stay at the Literature Festival for longer. So this year we’ve programmed a series of fantastic free activities, all designed to make the Festival experience more exciting, beneficial and memorable for pupils and teachers alike. All activities aim to get children enthusiastic about literature, reading and illustration and will give teachers ideas to take back to the classroom. Schools can book one free activity in conjunction with each ticketed event – the only challenge is choosing between them!
The Waterstones Children’s Hideaway
Meet the author
Come to the Waterstones Hideaway after your event to meet the author! If pupils already have a copy of an author’s book, they are very welcome to bring it to be signed after the event. There are also books available for purchase here. See page 22 for more information.
Picnic lunches
Schools are welcome to book the Waterstones Hideaway as a lunch venue. Make an advance booking (space is limited) and bring your packed lunches to the Festival.
Fun activities with Vibrant Kate
Join Vibrant Kate in the Waterstones Hideaway for a vibrant half hour of structured fun. As a break from sitting still and concentrating, sessions include short, energetic games to reinforce themes from talks and events. Add colour and playfulness to your Festival experience! Kate Sharp (VibrantKate) delights in igniting creativity at writing clubs and workshops and supporting young people as a Girlguiding UK leader. This is her ninth Literature Festival: after six years volunteering at Book It! and schools events and two years event managing she is thrilled to have her own tent space to welcome you to! www.vibrantkate.com bookable in conjunction with a ticketed event

Biography Jeremy Strong once worked in a bakery, putting the jam into three thousand doughnuts every night. Now he puts the jam in stories instead, which he finds much more exciting. At the age of three, he fell out of a first-floor bedroom window and landed on his head. His mother says that this damaged him for the rest of his life and refuses to take any responsibility. He loves writing stories because he says it is ‘the only time you alone have complete control and can make anything happen’. His ambition is to make you laugh (or at least snuffle). The National Trust at Chedworth Roman Villa, one of the best surviving Roman archaeological sites in the UK, has teamed up with Cheltenham Literature Festival this year to present two special workshops that will take place around Marcia Williams’s presentation of The Romans: Gods, Emperors and Dormice. Chedworth Roman Villa has some of the most beautiful Roman mosaic floors surviving in situ. During the workshop children will learn why the Romans liked mosaics so much, who designed them, how they were made and have a go at expressing themselves by designing and creating their own mosaic tile. There will also be a chance to handle replica Roman items and musical instruments, dress-up in Roman togas or even try on a Roman legionary outfit, all brought from Chedworth Roman Villa.

Brothers at War is both a fascinating First World War family history story and brilliant classroom resource. At the turn of the 20th century four brothers were born to the Baker family. Over a hundred years later eleven-year-old Eliza, one of Arthur Baker’s great-grandchildren, and her mother, Sarah, decided to find out about these ancestors and their experiences in the First World War. In this session, experienced writer and editor Sarah Ridley will explain her and her daughter’s research, which used diaries, photos, letters and other documentary evidence to find out about key battles, joining up, conscription, life in the trenches and the home front. She will also talk about Eliza’s role in the book, and how even young children can participate in history through their own family.

9.15am - 3pm
About the day The Young Writers’ Day is the perfect opportunity for budding young writers and their teachers to spend a day immersed in the process of creative writing. The beautiful library at Cheltenham College Junior School is once again the perfect backdrop, and we are delighted to announce that author Fleur Hitchcock will be inspiring this year’s crop of young writers. Beginning with a series of warm-up writing exercises, the results of which will be shared throughout the whole group, you will move on to creating characters. Using those characters you will then write the beginning of a story in your school group, and Fleur will help you to think about point of view, setting, and dramatic openings. Choosing any one of the story beginnings, pupils (and teachers of course) will then be able to spend some time on their own developing a longer piece of writing, with Fleur on hand for advice. There will be time to share the results at the end of the day, and Fleur will give tips and helpful hints, and answer any questions that may arise, throughout the day. As well as arranging the perfect venue and a very warm welcome, Cheltenham College Junior School also ensure that all attendees are fully catered for throughout the day, providing lunch, refreshments and all materials.
ABOUT FLEUR HITCHCOCK Fleur Hitchcock was born in Chobham in Surrey and grew up in Winchester. She studied English at Swansea University and then ran an art gallery in Bath for 20 years before going on to complete the Writing for Children MA at Bath Spa University. You will also receive a site map and information letter containing important information pertaining to your visit.
There is a lot to consider when undertaking a school trip; how well organised is the Festival? We think that it is very well organised, and from the feedback we receive, our visiting schools think so too! Festival staff meet and greet you when you arrive at Cheltenham Town Hall and then escort you to your first event. All the venues are easily accessible. Festival staff will help seat your party, and are always available to deal with queries and give assistance. Advice for preparing a risk assessment will be available on our website. www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/education/planning-your-visit

Lots of schools have lunch during their visit to the Festival. There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves. In case of rain, there is some limited cover to keep you dry!
Is there anywhere to park? Where should our coach pull up?
?
Coaches should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before the start of your first event. Coaches should pull up at the front of the Town Hall (GL50 1QA) for disembarkation but must then move on and wait at a dedicated coach parking area until pick-up time. There is free parking for coaches at Cheltenham Race Course (GL50 4SH) www.visitcheltenham.com/info/15/plan_your_visit/158/ coach_drivers_information
There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses around the Town Hall, but the area will be busy, so please allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several public car parks within a few minutes’ walk of the Town Hall.
