GUEST DIRECTOR
The programme has real variety this year, including some fantastic vocalists Paloma Faith, Imelda May and The Puppini Sisters. I’m also really excited that Melody Gardot has agreed to perform - it’s her first time at the Festival, and she’ll be giving us a sneak peek of material from her upcoming album.
Being Guest Director of Cheltenham Jazz Festival has fast become one of the highlights of my year. There’s always a real buzz during the Festival, and it’s a great opportunity for me to showcase some of my favourite artists.
There’s another great Norwegian line-up with the Helge Lien Trio, singer Hilde Marie Kjersem, the collaboration between Trondheim and Birmingham Conservatoires and the Hannah Paulsberg Experience on the Free Stage. There are also appearances from some real jazz legends; Bill Frisell with his Beautiful Dreamers trio, Chris Potter playing with a 10-piece ensemble and two cutting edge groups from New York - Jeff Williams Quartet and Fieldwork. Finally I am delighted that we can pay tribute to John Taylor’s major contribution to British jazz in his 70th Birthday year; he has been commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for new work and a concert at Cheltenham.
My first pick is American Saxophonist Chris Potter. He is leading a ten-piece ensemble from Birmingham Conservatoire, so you know it’s going to be a top-quality jazz gig. Bill Frisell is another top US jazz musician who will be playing this year. Dedicated jazz fans have long-been listening to Bill, but this is also a gig for people who just love music. I’m really looking forward to retro blues act CW Stoneking who is followed by Friday Night is Music Night, celebrating Ray Charles. The Guy Barker Big Band, the BBC Concert Orchestra, and special guests including Gregory Porter are all performing. Gregory is a truly great jazz vocalist and I’m sure that 2012 is the year that he’ll become a household name. I’ll be joining him on stage on Saturday so do come and see us if you can.

HAVE A LITTLE
Meet our first ever Artist in Residence Paloma Faith and find out what she’s got in store for us at this year’s Festival.
Y
ou know you’ve made it when you’re the answer to a trivia question on TV quiz show Eggheads, or so says jazz sweetheart Paloma Faith. Others might say her debut album, Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful?, going Platinum was a better indicator of her success, but then Paloma isn’t quite like everyone else. Aged just 26, Paloma has gone from shop assistant to magician’s assistant to a chart-topping singer with a sideline in acting in Oscar-nominated films. There seems to be no stopping music’s kookiest star as she now turns her hand to being the first ever Artist in Residence at Cheltenham Jazz Festival. As Artist in Residence, Paloma has invited some of her favorite artists to perform at Cheltenham, including pop icon Candi Staton.
“Her back catalogue of work is huge, and I don’t think people really know how brilliant she is,” explained Paloma. “She has kind of an early disco background, but she’s also really soulful and energetic.” Paloma has also been busy helping to put together a contemporary film programme for the Festival’s new on-site Screening Rooms cinema, and will be popping in to chat about her appearance in the film “A Nice Touch”. Finally, in a world exclusive, Paloma will be performing with the Guy Barker Orchestra on Monday 7 May, treating us to previously unheard material from her new album and paying homage to some of her favourite artists.
“Candi Staton is a big influence of mine; I think she is incredible.”

NORWEGIAN JAZZ
SONGS OF THE
J
azzwise Magazine’s Mike Flynn gets excited about this year’s Nordic stars.
For a country with a population of just under five million, Norway’s reputation as a creative hub of European jazz has never been stronger. Thus Cheltenham Jazz Festival’s hugely successful Norwegian music strand has sought to strengthen cultural bonds between our two countries and has produced many memorable moments. From the inaugural 2010 performances by the funky Beady Belle, mesmerising electronic soundscapes from Iain Ballamy and Thomas Strønen’s Food, to last year’s stunning shows by stellar solo guitar maestro Stian Westerhus and acclaimed pianist Tord Gustavsen. While the gifted undergraduates from the Trondheim Jazz Exchange proved a hit with both audiences and musicians alike, especially at the thrilling late night jams. This year three more compelling artists bring their distinctly Nordic perspective to bear on the art of modern music making. First among these is singer songwriter and avant noise explorer Hilde Marie Kjersem who creates a bewitching mix of exquisitely melancholic originals and equally plaintive re-workings of pop songs. Kjersem’s slow, meditative and emotive
storytelling style effortlessly borrows from jazz as much as it does country, pop and rock. The Helge Lien Trio have emerged as one of the most exciting piano groups of the last few years with their intricate classical-meetsrock passages with airy folk flourishes, all encapsulated on their breakthrough 2008 album Hello Troll and last year’s meditative Natsukashii. Pianist Lien’s melodic lyricism and playful improvisations link intuitively with the hugely adept rhythm section bassist Frode Berg and drummer Knut Aalefjær, with spellbinding results. Completing this year’s trio of talents is rising star saxophonist Hanna Paulsberg who first appeared at Cheltenham as part of the first Trondheim Jazz Exchange. As evidence of her fast maturing musicianship she’s appearing with her fiery free-bopping jazz quartet that’s the perfect vehicle for her cascading warmtoned solos while the current crop of Trondheim jazz students also appear. All three bring heat and light from this often frozen country that shines as a beacon of musical excellence and innovation.
