WELCOME Welcome to the 2011 Jazz Fringe Festival, which kicks off on 21 April, a week before the main Jazz Festival.
FRINGE ON THE TOWN
BBC INTRODUCING
The Fringe is focussing on your favourite local venues to bring you a selection of the best unsigned talent in a selection of free gigs. Join us on Thursday 28 April for the opening of this year’s Jazz on the Square. During the Festival the Fringe can be experienced on the Budvar stage and we’ll bring you free music throughout with extended hours in the evenings and an extra full day for Friday’s Bank Holiday.
On Sunday 1 May between 4.40 and 8.20pm Jez Nelson hosts a showcase of the most exciting and creative emerging UK jazz talent on the stage in the gardens. Radio 3’s flagship contemporary jazz show, Jazz on 3, has teamed up with BBC Introducing to provide a platform for rising artists at the heart of the festival. Rachel Musson’s Skein, The Discordian Trio, Saltwater Samurai and Trish Clowes will be performing sets recorded for broadcast on Jazz on 3 and a range of shows across the BBC Radio Network. www.bbc.co.uk/music/introducing

The Railway, 8pm Zang Tang are a furious funky five piece band from Bristol playing a super-tight fusion of acid jazz/ house/funk. Always producing an explosive and energetic performance they guarantee to get any venue grooving. zangtang.com
LUND QUARTET
Slak Bar, doors at 8pm Lund Quartet are a Bristol based instrumental band, exploring the musical ground between Jazz and HipHop. The traditional jazz piano trio is augmented with a turntablist, scratching samples recorded especially for the band by some of Bristol’s finest musicians. lundquartet.com
