WHY?

“A dynamic center is important for the image of a city. The image is again an essential marketing tool in the struggle for residents, businesses and culture.”** By investigating the history of port area in Ijmuiden, where the development of industry and leisure closely related to changes in geographical morphology, to find out the possibility of secondary function of quays and coherent design and integration into the existing urban network.

HISTORY OF DEVELOPMENT

Background

Methods & Analysis

Methods & Analysis

“Currently, with the renewed interest in the waterfront, there is an interest to have the (former) port area reflect the unique culture of the city. But what is a city’s culture, whose culture, and what is the degree of conservatism vs. international openness? Is culture just another theme park? Could it be the renewal of quality public space—of the meeting place for communities? Or is it merely another corporate identity?”*

Leisure X Industry

The impression from our fieldtrip has led us to look at the relationship of human and the context in both leisure and industry settings. One can immediately identify the 2 settings by the huge scale difference between each other, which also in turn affects people’s behavior, of whether gathering or passing by.

SITE

With beach on one end, city on the other and harbour inbetween, leisure and industry seem spatially segregated in Ijmuiden. Through research we decide to investigate the scale difference in the Fishing Harbour and the Ijmond Habour, in which leisure activities scattered in the industrial setting.

HOW?

Leisure X Industry

Leisure X Industry

We wrote down the walking journey along the harbour and depicted human perception of surroundings in various scale setting in leisure and industry area defind by the eye-level line. In situ photographical documentation, real personas, numerical facts, line-drew ignored facts juggled together in a collage, and narratives display order, degree and spatial relationship of perception.

SCALE X NARRATIVE

Human Perception. A permanently changing and short attention that could be easily limited by height and vigor. One could hardly notice details from objects which are several times larger than it. In the industrial and leisure slice of city, different scales of activities reign. Industrial city depicts senarios where people are cast away from mainstream attention, while leisure part shows the richness and pluralism of one place.

BEACH FESTIVAL DREAM

SAILOR DREAM

A lot of people go up the stairs to the beach.

All I ever dreamed...

couples, friends, tramps, besties, bachelor...

was to navigate like a true sailor.

Some of them just sit on the stairs.

But, when I stand on the slope. The only thing in my world is...

chatting, looking around, playing smartphone...

I heard scream from the other side of the pier. I can not wait! I am leaving now! Bye!

We juxtaposed scenes of leisure and industry to see the contrast of different scale. In this way, we can look deeper into the defining components of the two theme. For example, the walkway serving ships on water in comparison of the walkway cross dunescape where leisure activities happen.

SCALE X COLLAGE

Methods & Analysis

Methods & Analysis

Collage is a technique of an art production, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.* So it would be much easier to understand a image of a city through the impression of fragments. Although they do not encompass the whole, they represent the essence of a city. Collages create an interesting contrast between industrial and leisure components and even suggest a similarity of the two in totally different scales.

SCALE X UTILIZATION

The trans-scale potential development is justified by our analysis on space utilization on site, that leisure and industry space coexist in the same infrastructure and occupy in different time. The fishing harbour is normally used for parking fishing boat. During the Harbour Festival, the harbour banks accommodates performance and parades. When cruise comes, the bank turns into leisure setting whereas the cargo ship would define the space for industrial use. In Ijmond Harbour this coexistance and shifting of leisure and industry is even more obvious as the site is underdevelopment.

SCALE X ACCESSIBILITY

With human as the subject that moves from different scale settings, the transition in between deserves further investigation to understand the mechanism of it in our site. Therefore we study in section of these trans-scale moments. Looking at the connection between land and boat, the scale difference express itself in the threshold of access, that in industry the access is brutal and steep while in leisure the access is gentle. For example, the access to yacht is flat timber deck while the fishing boat has no access medium at all--the fisherman just climb or throw things up. We can see from the extraction of these access that again that one is human based and one is machine based.

SCALE X ELEMENT

Human perception of scale is not only defined by dimension in section, but also by the elements that one encounters through his spatial experience. These include the signboards in a restaurant and the non-identifiable facade of a factory. Even the simpliest contrast of doors infers directly to us the differenct scale setting we are in.

Leisure and industry coexist in the harbour setting but are seperated across place and time by the scale difference. Through making trans=scale architectural interventions, leisure and industry can be bridged and stimulates the growth of each other. The harbour in Ijmuiden is thus vitalized for better development.
