Private Housing + Public Greenland Individual Project Studio Advisor: Gonzalo Alonso

This project seeks to explore how collective housing can also be a public project that provides public spaces as civic center and enrich the life of not only residents but also general citizens. The projects approach this goal with the tool of topography line. By architecturally transform the topo line on the site, which portrays the drastic change in height, the projects incorperates several scales from public use to private use.

Site Plan, 1 = 100’

From the scale of a stair, to the scale of a seat, to the scale of a stepped terrace garden, to the scale of a commercial store, to the scale of residential units: these different scales re-construct the topo line and transform the site into an integrated mountain which provides spaces from public to private. The valley between the peaks become the public plaza. The offsetting distance between each topo line becomes the terraced garden. Each resident has a private garden at the end of the unit, each floor also has a semi-public garden at the end of eac floor, on the ground floor there is also a terraced garden for the public use. The scale of the three pieces of residence respond to the height of the surrounding buildings.

The ramp responds to the single family houses on the West side of the site, while the verticle pieces respond to the Downtown Mall and the Parking garage on the North and East side of the site. The horizontality of the ramp along with the verticality of the other two pieces forms the richfullness of the composition. In the public scale, each unit is different but based on the same basic unit. With the change of the curvature and the offsetting of the floors, the units naturally forms a variety of different sizes which range from one bedroom to three bedrooms. Satifying the needs for all customers. The entire project is covered by green space.

Memorial of Paper Individual Project Studio Advisor: Peter Waldman

The project is established as a memorial of paper in the time of digital media. The project contains three components: a tower of traditional paper-making guild hall, an exhibition tower for showcasing paper-made art works, and a horizontal wall as the library. The large open space is dedicated to public event. The projects then express the life-cycle of the paper from production to utility. Visitors are rendered with great opportunity to understand the entire process of paper while roaming.

Site Plan, 1 = 70’

The project, as located in typical block in downtown Manhattan, functions as a re-vitalizer of the block. Instead of inserting another piece of mass that comply to the lot geometry, this project densifies its program into two towers, creating a generous open space for all circulations from both of the street level and metro level. With the gesture of putting two towers and leaving the rest as open space, the project unfolds a usually enclosed block and allows pedestrians to roam in different way within the block, providing a new experience of understanding the built environment. On top of that, the generous open space also provides more opportunities of natural light for the adjacent buildings.

The three components, the two vertical pieces and one horizontal piece, each has a different characteristic. The tower of exhibition uses primarily glass and steel as material, inviting the pedetrians to explore the exhibition and also creating view shed towards the manhattan bridge. The tower of production uses concrete as structure and brick as finishes to respond to the block context. The thick poche not only provides space for all the equipments and plumbing device to transport water and paper pulp, but also creates a compressed experienceo for walking around the tower as in contrast with the openness of glass tower. The horizaontal piece of the library wraps around the two tower, functioning as a connector. The entire parti-wall is dedicated to bookshelf as in the idea of linear library. 1F

Section of Longitude and Lattitude, 1 = 80’ The sectional quality of the project is incredibly rich with the contrast of materials and formal languages. The section on latitude expresses the cinematic experience as people roam through the space. The alternation of compression and openness further enhance the concept of memorial. While the section of latitude expresses the exprience of people with the individual monuments as object, the section of longitude expresses the relationship between these objects and the experience of people when inside these monuments. The juxtoposition of the exhibition tower and production tower allows visiter to fully understand the origin of the artifact or the end-product of the paper in front of them. Visitors are rendered with the ability to see all events happending in all spaces, ranging from the market to the library, from the paper making to the art exhibition.

Housing Hypothesis: Triple

Individual Project Studio Advisor: Gonzalo Alonso

This project is the first hypothetical design of housing experiment. The projects explores the methodology of using simple geometry to resolve a horizontal housing unit that can accomandate three people.

Housing Hypothesis: Minimal Individual Project Studio Advisor: Gonzalo Alonso

This is the second experiment in this seire. The project challenges the notion of floor plate by establishing a grid system based on golden ratio. The subdivision of the floor plates are given the ability to move up and down by the mechanical equipment on the wall. With moving floor plates, spaces are redefined, floor area is doubled and furnitures are incorperate: a new way of thinking minimal housing.

Housing Hypothesis: Tube

Individual Project Studio Advisor: Gonzalo Alonso

This is the third experiment of the Housing Hypothesis. This project reinterprets the concept of free facade, radicalize it into movable facade supported by rings of steel structure. The vertical division of programs are connected by the attrium as a inner garden. The movable facade makes control of the sunlight possible and creates incredible view shed to the outside environment.

Tale of Two Perspectives Exhibition Project Project Advisor: Shiqiao Li + Esther Lorenz

This installation is a morphology of the traditional media of scroll. The project takes advantage of the traditionally ignored back-side of the scroll. By employing a special joint between pieces of the scroll, viewers are rendered the ability to interact and unfold the scroll to explore the back facade of it. The front facade is a view from the atrium of a typical HongKong residential building with one vanishing point. The back facade is a traditional painting of Chinses landscape with multiple vanishing point. Interaction creates experience of the alternation of two perspectives.

Interaction of Urban/Landscape With input of the users, the scroll will unfold itself back and forth between its front facade and back facade. On the front is a picture of HongKong’s most typical housing building. Standing in the atrium looking up, an one point perspective is naturally formed with the framing of the built environment. On the back is a traditional Chinese landscape painting, which does not have a clear vanishing point, expressing a different attitude when looking at landscape. The alternation of two perspectives evoke the question of how our mind has been shaped by the built environment as how we are seeing things differently.
