PLACE-MAKEING FOR A BETTER LIFE
With the rapid development of society, the variation in architecture not only forms diversity in cities representing people's cultures, ideas, memories and lives, but also causes problems and issues. For me, architecture is a combination of ideas, art, science and techniques which creates places for people. Architecture is also a science of solving problems and developing ideas in order to make life better.

In my opinion, creating places for people to experience is much more important than simply making forms. Architecture should not involve building cold, concrete structures containing people, but should be about identities, ideas, change and finding a place in people's hearts. It is our primary role to uncover the potential of society rooted in the humanity of ordinary people, and to make places that are meaningful for them. Also, architecture is a science of solving problems. Civilisation has faced many problems throughout history. Approaches to solving problems should be based on rigorous research rather than personal ideas. Through research, we should also learn to respect the local culture and find practical, effective solutions for issues. The following projects represent my efforts to design places and devices for people to experience, play, socialise and dwell in and ultimately live better lives.

The City’s Blank Spaces A space makes for sharing
Location: Taipei, Taiwan. Instructor: Anson Chen, Doctoral candidate of Tsinghua University, Beijing China. Period: Sep. 2016 -May. 2017 Type: Academic, Final Project, Individual Work.
Due to the decline of the traditional market, this project provides a new centre for residents which rejuvenate the life of the market. This project involved researching the original market's role in people's lives and transforming it into a new recreational public facility for the city.

Reactivating the Centres of People’s Lives
In the past, people used the blank spaces in the city to construct flexible, moveable markets for vendors selling food and daily supplies. Citizens were involved in the commercial activity and socialised with other people in these places, which became the centres of people's daily lives. In recent years, traditional markets have been disappearing due to the development of hypermarkets and changes in people's lifestyles and attitude.
Site
Shilin is one of the oldest areas in Taipei, with many schools, hospitals and traditional markets. The site is located in the north of Shilin, with an old traditional market at the top of the site. Old buildings surround the site, forming a natural barrier. In recent years, many people have moved into this area because of the good living conditions.
An Old Experience Transformed into a New Lifestyle
Removal
An old traditional market is located on the site. This will be demolished because the old structure isn't sound.
In Taipei City, almost every neighbourhood had a traditional market. However, many of these markets are no longer in use. Finding ways to utilise these blank spaces has become an important issue for the government. In my opinion, it is difficult to cater to the complexity of daily life, so we should provide flexible, adjustable spaces which are just like the old market. These spaces should be reprogrammed in order to meet the needs of people's new lifestyles and attitudes.
2.
Merging
A road divides the site into two sections. After removing the old building, I decided to merge the two sections into one park.
Reprogramming
New programmes meet people's needs. Also, each space can be adjusted according to users' requirements.
Openness to the City
Four paths connect to the main roads. This plan should lead people to walk into the facilities.

This provides basic facilities to different users, such as study rooms, cafes and so on. At different times of the day, the requirements of citizens may change, so the spaces should be adaptable. These facilities offer opportunities for different kinds of people to interact with each other. On weekends, events held here can promote the consciousness of the community.

What Is X-SITE?
A Flower Is Not a Flower
In the environment, flowers provide nutrients and shelter for bees. Comparing bees with people, there are many "concrete flowers" such as museums and libraries which nourish people's spirits in artificial cities. Museums are one of the most important flowers provided for citizens.
Xsite is a public competition inspired by the Serpentine Pavilion in London. This competition provides an opportunity for young architects to build a pavilion in the square of the Taipei Fine Art Museum. Xsite has been held for three years. In 2018, the theme of the competition was "Interdependency", which presented the museum as an ecosystem.
The City is an Artificial Ecosystem
With the development of civilisation, the natural environment is gradually replaced by concrete buildings. The relationship between people and nature is disappearing. Citizens live stressful lives because they pursue productivity and efficiency. Therefore, some facilities in the city become places where people can recharge their batteries, such as shopping malls, theatres and museums.
8.
The entrance of the Taipei Fine Art Museum is constructed in glass which acts as a mirror. It also looks like a monitor displaying the interaction between people and the arts. The pavilion is designed to create another "monitor" facing the museum entrance, so people will see another monitor displaying the interaction between people and plants.

To hide the heavy structure of the surface of the pavilion, this design uses a V-shaped column system, with cables to balance and strengthen the whole structure. Euphotic fabrics and stereoscopic plant fabric systems will be hung on the cable system and V-shaped column system, respectively.

Site Plan
There are several holes in the plant fabric. People can go inside the draped fabric and interact with the plants. From outside, it looks like a normal pavilion, but when you go through the fabric holes, you will feel as if you are in another world full of nature and sunlight.

Citizens' lifestyles always reflect regional characteristics. With the development of cities, unique regional features have been disappearing. This project tries to preserve old lifestyles and combine them with current trends in development. Social housing creates a vertical neighbourhood and fosters interaction with nearby communities.

In traditional rural life, there are no mobile phones or internet which allow people to connect with each other. Therefore, the land temple has become a spiritual and social centre. Annual events, festivals and weddings are held here. It brings people together. As time goes by, apartments have become the main form of residence. The traditional relationship between people is disappearing, so it is important to preserve these in a modern lifestyle. This is a place which can keep people in touch with each other. A place for life. The site is located in a newly developed area in Taoyuan. In this area, new buildings and schools provide a good quality of life for residents. As a result, many people have moved into this area in recent years.

As this is a social housing development, the people who live in this building have different economic status from other neighbourhoods. Thus, to increase interaction and transaction, the first and second floors in this project offer public facilities such as a laundry, convenience store and so on.

The ripple wall is one of three projects behind the counter in the ALIEN lobby. As in other harbour cities around the world, the ocean gives a sense of permanence and connects the city with the world. The ocean can be seen, heard, touched and smelled. It never stops moving and has an unfixed form. Therefore, our basic design thinking and strategy focused on how to use a contemporary approach to express the "natural status" of the ocean to create a feeling of technology and avant-garde, but still with a local sense - put simply, "local factors + contemporary expression ".

To simulate ripples on the wall, I used Grasshopper to calculate the waves created when water drops fall onto still water and transformed this information into angles. Due to budget constraints, we couldn’t use a robotic arm, so we calculated every single angle and printed it out to give to the workers to build the wall by hand.

Lantern Festival
Site.
The Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar. During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles which are written on other people’s lanterns. The government holds events on the street to celebrate this festival each year.
Traditional Lanterns
Traditionally, lanterns are hung on the street and people walk around to enjoy their beauty.
Landscape Lanterns
Instead of traditional lanterns hanging along sidewalks, we designed "landscape lanterns" that people can walk among and interact with. 24.
The site is an overpass located on a ten-lane road in the western area of Taipei. This road is near a popular shopping district, so there is heavy traffic in this area. We tried to utilise the traffic factor and create a special lantern for people to enjoy.

Animated Optical Illusions
When the grille plate is slid across the paper it creates several illusions that trick your brain into thinking they're actually animated.
Animated Optical Illusions in the City
In the city, illusions are created by the movement of sight rather than the moving grille plate. These illusions change faster when people are moving quickly.
