In early November 2010, members of APASS made a trip to the Houses of Parliament. Many students participated in this event as guided tours of the parliament are extremely rare. We were guided through various famous halls and chambers, taking in the spectacular architecture and elaborate decorations, listening to insightful information on the history and legislative system in the UK. After the tour, we all went to Chinatown for dinner to get to know each other better, laying grounds for collaboration in the future. The trip was a fruitful experience for all students.

An inter-university debate was held in Warwick in January 2011. On the day, the lecture hall was packed with the 14 debaters and many supporters. Two debates were held with the motions: “This house believes that high levels of testosterone are the main cause for criminal acts” and “This house believes that authorities should officially designate red- light districts for legal prostitution”. In order to enhance cooperation between students from different universities, one of the debates was a mixed debate with contestants from two universities forming a team to fend for one another. After the heated discussions, we were treated to a hotpot dinner and socialised over karaoke.

Public Affairs Social Service

APASS, namely Associated Public Affairs and Social Service, is an organisation which establish a delegation-based panel for all existing PASS societies in UK universities. Our ultimate goal is to raise awareness on public issues and to increase involvement in contributing back to the society.

OXFORD

The Oxford PASS was created recently with the aim to expand political, social and economical awareness of the Hong Kong community in Oxford and also to act as a channel to provide students opportunities to serve the world through social services. This year would be our first active year as a society. With the assistance of APASS, we are optimistic that this year would be a success.

LSE

The LSESU HKPASS Society was founded with two main goals in mind: to raise awareness on public issues and to increase involvement in contributing back to the society. Through organising a wide range of talks, we hope to broaden our members’ opportunities to expand their social horizon to different walks of life.

Furthermore, we have also liaised with a lot of charity organisations, to provide our members with a broad spectrum of social service experience.

Founded in 2008, Imperial College Public Awareness and Social Service Society is a society serving the community of oversea students from Hong Kong. Our aim is to raise their interest on current affairs and also a sense of social awareness and belonging.

Our events include a regular discussion forums, presentations and exhibition boards on current affairs, regular volunteering events and an annual charity concert.

The WHKPASS was founded in 2010 to promote awareness in social issues through volunteering and acting as a platform for exchange of ideas on public issues. A wide variety of events have been organized to extend member base. These include weekly discussion forums and lectures, debates, charity sale and volunteering trips, leadership workshops, etc. it is our belief that specialty, diversity, creativity, commitment and passion are the keys to promote PASS.

The Cardiff University Hong Kong Society Public Affairs & Social Service Department was created as a section under the Cardiff Hong Kong Society to promote the ‘PASS’ culture amongst our members in Cardiff: to raise their social awareness and to increase involvement in contributing back to the society. Alongside with other respective members of universities. By ways of achieving such ultimate aim, charitable project is just a great example in one of many other things that we pursuit.

IMPERIAL

Through inter-university collaboration, we are aiming to expand our membersʼ horizon to different walks of life. In the process, we aim to assist instead of altering our beneficiariesʼ developmental direction by enforcing our own ideals. We are strongly encouraging our membersʼ to take an initiative proposing, or even organising, possible events.
