ALWAYS “OUT-STANDING”
This is not only a portfolio, but an attractive book on the bookshelf. As you can see, I am trying to cut this book with an angle of 18° to make it inclined forward, which makes it always standing out and say hello to you.

I BELIEVE THAT THE BEST IDEAS IN THE WORLD AREN’T ACTUALLY IN THE WORLD-THEY’RE LOCKED IN PEOPLE’S HEADS. I love my life and always inspired by everyday moments of wonder and possibility. I think the best innovation comes from the intersectional parts of the different disciplines. Based on my academic and work experiences, I designed comprehensively in the spectrum of furniture and product design, interior and landscape architecture, also in graphic design to refresh my ideas. I seek out the unexpected and then reshape my experience into objects. I am trying to be a designer that has the emotional sensitivity as an artist and the rationality as an architect, which makes my work in a way of functional art.

FURNITURE | THE SYSTEM
THE POWER OF RANDOM As the beginning of my furniture chapter, I’d like to introduce my creative card system. In this system we have Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives. Noun cards are materials & objects, verb cards show the process of ‘how’, and adjective cards are the ‘mode’. So we can simply draw 1 or 2 cards from each catalogue as a hint to create ideas. For example, I have a noun card that shows ‘paper’, a verb card showing ‘folding’ and an adjective card showing ‘angry’. I will then do some brainstorming with these three words: 8 ‘folding the paper angrily’.
FURNITURE | ZIP CHAIR
PLASTIC+EASY=ZIP CHAIR For example, this chair design was started with two words: PLASTIC & EASY. Basically plastic are flat sheets or granular materials. Because of the word easy, I decided to start with the flat sheets. In the beginning I played with some paper to explore the form.
9
FURNITURE | ZIP CHAIR
FINISH WITH A SIMPLE BASE Then I built a very simple steel base to finish this easy dining chair. Because the sitting surface isn’t a solid piece and instead with open slots, water won’t pool on the seat so it can be used both indoors and outdoors.
ALWAYS FITS Based on the material property of 1/8” polypropylene sheet, the seat back will shift a little bit to go with the shape of the body.
START FROM PAPER EXPLORING Finally I got a sitting surface design: laser cut out from a polypropylene sheet by six simple cutting lines. Then gathered to a single point on either side to be secured with the zip ties. It is this act of gathering those ends that created the curve of the seat. The shape changes by how many cuts I made as well as how long was the cutting lines. So I went throught several full size model to work out the final shape. 10

GO FURTHER!
ZIP CHAIR + EMPTY
In the beginning of this chapter I mentioned about my card system, and we have Zip Chair as an example of how to create new idea with that system. I can also use this system to develop existing ideas, I will choose an object that I want to recreate, and then randomly select a verb or adjective card as a hint. So I decide to make a follow-up design of the zip chair using this system. This time, I got a word “Empty” from the pile.
Since this is a follow-up design of the zip chair, the first thing I want to continue is the design principle of ‘simple cut & tie’. Also I want to keep the elegant flower petal shape so visually they are a series. Then how to make it empty? It was a hard word to begin with, so I went out for some fresh air. On my way back I saw a little girl with her ice-cream cone. Then the story began.
FURNITURE | EMPTY CHAIR
Again I played with paper and tried to find an appropriate form. Finally I finished with a cone shape. Then I rolled up a piece of felt in the same way as an insert piece.
GO UP TO FULL SIZE How to cut the bottom is a critical part of my design process. First I worked out some geometry to make the bottom part flush. Then I start to make full size models to find the cutting point. Every single change can make huge difference: the openning width, the tilt angle, the height of the seat, and the stableness. 13
FURNITURE | EMPTY CHAIR
ZIP CHAIR+EMPTY =EMPTY CHAIR Because it is empty, so this chair is also a storage space: whatever you put in it becomes your cushion. Now your seldom-used sleeping bag can be used everyday, or you can surprise your guests by pulling out a whole set of bedding from your seat in front of them.

FURNITURE | RAINBOW BOOK CHAIR
RAINBOW BOOK CHAIR This design start at an ‘accident’: I was cutting out some different sized square for my other project, using an found magzine as my cutting board. After I finish my work, I got some supprise.
16
FURNITURE | RAINBOW BOOK CHAIR
CUT & OPEN I played with the scale of the book and cut the pages to create positive and negative shape in two sides to fit the body. But where to cut those pages is important, so I have to work out a line of the body first.
17
FURNITURE | RAINBOW BOOK CHAIR
TEST BENCH First I collected a group of people’s back curve on a large paper. This is the initial data for my test bench. The test bench could change height individually in each part for researching different positions and dimensions. I invite a group of people whose height ranging from 150cm to 186cm to take part into the following “Test Bench” experiment to find their respectively most-comfortable curve. Also I collect data from several best-selling models in IKEA. Then I got the graph on the left side by lapped them over each other. Finally I obtained the unique curve that will be used in my design by connecting several key points that exhibit the highest overlapping intensity. Comparing this curve with the photos of experiments carefully, I found it fitted perfectly in most cases. 18
FURNITURE | RAINBOW BOOK CHAIR
SIZE & STRUCTURE I work out the size through several cardboard full size model and cut the designed lines out of yoga mats, then bolt them between two pieces of laser cut aluminium. Two 150-pound heavy duty hinges surport the presure from user’s back, they also make the upper part easy to open. People can move this chair by holding those leather belts at the back of the seat.

DESIGN FOR CONTENT This chair is designed for the chaildren’s library, the color could be changed to fit different interior atmosphere. The concept is playing with the original element of a book pages, layers and the action of open. In terms of the material, I chose yoga mat as a prototype, felt would be another choice in this design.

FURNITURE | LEAN SERIES
LEAN SERIES
This series is designed for a sustainable design competition, so I startved from the material. Considering the environmental protection, rattan is chosen. The advantages of rattan are following: 1. Light, tough, and easy-to-bending; 2. Flexible, not afraid of extrusion and pressure; 3. The general growth cycle for rattan is 3-5 years, and it is recyclable.
22
FURNITURE | LEAN SERIES
DESIGN FOR WAITING This series is designed for temporary rest (bus stations, phone booth, etc.), which is a design to reuse the free space in public. Sitting people are likely to feel unsafe because the lower line of sight in public. In this case, lean against something would be a good choice.
23

24
FURNITURE | LEAN SERIES
LEAN SERIES This concept came from a interesting phenomenon I saw in China. Workers always sit on the lowest bar of a ladder and lean against the second bar when they were at rest. In terms of the material property, I made some wire model to explore my design. Finally I choose three forms from my models. The first one I made is inspired from ladder. The second one has same unit which connected by rattan bark. The third one is designed spacificly for lean position. They are series of chair that lean against the wall, and has antiskid rubber between the connecting part so they won’t slip. Natural fabric was used as seating surface so they are environmental friendly and has very low production cost.

FURNITURE | TRIPLE
TRIPLE TABLE This is a design for myself, I have 3 main problems in my room: 1. I have a really low bed with normal height table and chair, and I don’t have extra chair for my friend, which means if my friend come to see me one of us have to sit on my bed and always looking up to talk. 2. I need something to put my hottest laptop on while watching films on my bed. 3. I need a low table to write on when I do my readings before sleep.
26
FURNITURE | TRIPLE
A DESIGN FOR MY OWN CONTENT The triple table is a fast-paced design for my sedentary lifestyle. I always want to do things on my bed as much as possible: watch a film without a burning laptop on my knees, have my snacks beside my hand; put my glasses and my phone on a table top instead of the floor; write my paper or make a little drawing when I got an idea before fall asleep; etc. All the requirements make me design this multi-used table, the size and proportion is just for my room and myself. The key word for this design is layer, and I want a cool piece that made out of wood. So I design and made a cardboard furniture model to see if it meets my requirements.
27
FURNITURE | TRIPLE
THE PROCESS Since I only have a week to finish this piece. My design has S-shape both horizontally and vertically, so is by no means easy in traditional process. But I do want to give it a beautiful finish without a crunch mode. Everyone thought it was a impossible task, but I need to figure out a new way to make it possible. I sepreated my design into 2D pieces and cut them out of 3/4 plywood using CNC machine. I cut two groups so I have natual finger joint when they came together. Then I cut the right side of top layer using a jig saw and glue that severed piece to the left. Repeat the same process on the bottom layer. 28

FURNITURE | FOLDING STOOL
30
SOME THOUGHTS TO BEGIN A SHORT PROJECT We have tons of ways to play with materials, but we get used to connect some specific materials to some specific ways of manipulating: normally we will think about folding while we see a piece of paper. What if we put all the methods separately to see how they match with all kind of different materials?
FURNITURE | FOLDING STOOL
FOLDING STOOL This design starts with only one word: fold. I began with several materials and some ways of folding. After making some models I decided to do an experimental folding design about the combination of leather and laser cut aluminum sheets. I laser cut 1/8“ thickness aluminum piece as the structure part of the folding stool and use leather as both the hinge and the cover. Because of the material combination and the special way of folding, this stool can be very thin and portable, but strong enough for an adult.
31
FURNITURE | GREEK BENCH
GREEK BENCH This is a chance to design for the Greek gallery of RISD museum, so I decide to design in an artistic way for my mother school. I will make an unique bench just for this certain gallery, using a special design language to go with this certain atmosphere. It is a bench, but in the mean time, it is an installation, an experience, an artwork.
32
FURNITURE | GREEK BENCH
HAVE YOU EVER SITTING ON A STATUE’S KNEE IN A MUSEUM? I was inspired by the classical sculpture, but extract only the element of clothing. I want to make it like a sculpture, similar but different from the classical one. People rarely touch or even use an exhibits in a museum, especially in the ancient gallery. So I design this piece for people to have an experience to touch and use something looks like a real exhibits. So I start to study greek clothing and the way to put on.
33
FURNITURE | GREEK BENCH
MODELS & PROBLEM I made several wire mesh mdels to explore the form of the bench, but I couldn’t decide my final material for a long time. How to make natural drape of clothes in this design? I did tons of research about this problem. One day a idea came to me, why not use fabric itself? I applied epoxy resin on a piece of fabric, this material hardens quickly after a few minutes. After finish the outline shape I reinforced it from the inside using fiberglass and epoxy. I made a full size stool using this method to see if it can support at least an adult. This stool works perfectly, it has natural drape and holds 180 pound easily. 34

FURNITURE | TAPE CHAIR
TAPE CHAIR This is an experimental design using found objects: a broken chair and foam tapes from local recycling center. I revised this chair and set on it with my closed eyes. Depending on the feeling from my back I know where to put the foam tapes. This is an embodied seating surface system that can be used in any chair. This is the first step of my exploring processes.
36
FURNITURE | TAPE CHAIR
MAKE YOUR OWN CHAIR The new set of tape chair uses iconic school chair as the base. In this new set I changed the tape from rectangular foam pieces to round felt pieces, then ask three people make their own chair using those pieces.
37
FURNITURE | TAPE CHAIR
MAKE YOUR OWN CHAIR Here are the screen shots from my video. I covered one girl’s eyes so she can only depend on her feeling to make her chair. I simply told them this is an embodied process and they can tape on everywhere they want. In the video we can see the difference between people when they are making their own chair. 38

INTERIOR | DESSERT RESTAURANT
42
ALICE IN WONDERLAND This is a fast-paced dessert restaurant design. Location is to some extent critical for a dessert shop, but in this case we don’t have a very good basis: this small restaurant located in a basement of an office building in college town. It has a really narrow underground aisle to the street, worse still, that aisle is common space so we have to keep it intact. I decide to turn this potentially bad situation into a more desirable point. This situation reminds me a movie: Alice in Wonderland. Alice falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world, which is a very attractive story for this restaurant.
INTERIOR | DESSERT RESTAURANT
SITES & INTERIOR ARRANGEMENT Before going to far into the story, I have to stay in the real world for the tricky part. This is a Hongkong style dessert restaurant, so most of customers will eat in and stay for a while. Also the owner want to have a retail zone for pastry and beverage. We have a square space with nine big columns and facilitie pipelines right in the middle, how to satisfy all the needs in this small square? I have three key point for the interior arrangement: 1. staff have their own route to work; 2. guests have their own space to enjoy; 3. hide columns cleverly.

INTERIOR | DESSERT RESTAURANT
ELEMENTS FROM THE MOVIE This is a theme dessert restaurant, but due to the location, the majority of guests in ths shop will be college students and white-collar employees. So instead of that absurd feeling from the movie, I want to create just a novel and vivid atmosphere for this small space. Then I decide not to rigidly imitate but abstract some element from the movie. I abstract three impressive element from the movie: the Queen of Hearts’ living playing cards, Duchess’s white space and colorful planet from the forest.
44
INTERIOR | DESSERT RESTAURANT
CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE, NOT COPY THE FILM I communicated with the shop owner about the design. Both of us don’t want copy scenes from the movie, we want a special space. How to create an appropriate atmosphere that fits the movie but not too over for this restaurant space? I decide to use the colors and simple icon from the movie. Make a white space and emphasize the ceiling design by using gradients suits from poker cards. The light color in each booth is different to accompany with the color of the ceiling. As uniformity of the space, the floor is checkerboarded with black and white tiles.

RENDERINGS & MODEL Here are the renderings for this project. The ceiling pieces will made out of polypropylene and paint colors from the inside. The entrance will be a totally white space as a compartion of the long underground rabbit hole, which gives people a fresh feeling of the wonderland. They will see the reception area in front of them. The left hand side is dining booths, they can choose their favorite color and enjoy the dessert. The right hand side is retail zone, people can go around and paying conveniently. There is two staff route from the kitchen to both the retail area and the booths so people won’t be bothered.

INTERIOR | COMMERCIAL SPACE
RECONSTRUCTURE THE CLASSICAL This is a commercial space design studio. We choose a prototype to reconsruct and turns out a new space. My prototype is the Colosseum in Rome. The internal structure is complicated since it is a public architecture. Videos about its internal structure and the space analysis could be found in the CD attached within the portfolio.
50
INTERIOR | COMMERCIAL SPACE
CONSTRUCTIONS Colosseum is an classical example of centrality. The routes for noble class, ordinary Roman citizens and gladiators are never intersect with each other. The Colosseum is roughly elliptical in shape, with its long axis, oriented WSW-ENE, which measures 188 metres and the short one 156. The building stands on a base of two steps; above it there are three floors of arcades and a fourth storey without arches but with small rectangular windows. There were eighty arches on every floor, divided by pillars with a half column.
51
INTERIOR | COMMERCIAL SPACE
THE METHOD OF RECONSTRUCTION After some research of the original architecture, I’d like to reconstruct the colosseum in a simple but interesting way--try to squeeze it. After being squeezed, the internal structure of the colosseum would change with the movement of the outsides. The huge stands may change into several smaller stages, those pillars with a half column would become very interesting ceiling. 52
INTERIOR | COMMERCIAL SPACE
NEW COMMERCIAL SPACES More potential for further functional redevelopment were brought out along with the generation of new spaces. We still has the excellent circulation from original colosseum, but we can easily divide those spaces into different functions after squeeze. For example, we have natrally theatre space and the sightlines are excellent from any seat. Also we have very special large space which has pillars with a half column. 53
INTERIOR | COMMERCIAL SPACE
POSSIBILITIES There could be new stores, exhibition hall, museum, restaurants, VIP room, etc. We can change interior material and light color to make the internal space a lot different than the outside. Due to the windows in the elevation of Colosseum, the new building has very interesting alley with a lot of display windows.
54
INTERIOR | COMMERCIAL SPACE
CONCLUSION This design is not for a spacific place or city. It is an experimental commercial prototype, which is gernerated from classical. Colosseum is a very good classical prototype for this project. Its circulation design is still used in modern stadium, which is also fits for most of commercial space. The new building has both large and small spaces depending on how to squeeze the original Colosseum. Multi-entrance and clear circulation is also important for customer. This is a new prototype, so it could be in anywhere, here I use Hongkong as an example.

INSTALLATION
INSTALLATION | AURORA
AURORA This is an interior lighting project that I made during my undergrad period. We were asked to choose a word and make a lighting box upon that word. I really like the feeling of aurora and wanted to create an atmosphere about it. So instead of a box, I’d like to build a full size installation about aurora.
58
INSTALLATION | AURORA
At the beginning, I tried many different materials in order to express the fanscinating colors of aurora. Here are some models during the exploration processes of the installation. Finally I decided tow build this installation in an architectural way by using PVC board and color changing spotlight.
ENJOY A LITTLE ESCAPE This is an installation, but also a meditation space. I will play meditative music to go with the feeling. So I choose a quiet space in the basement of the college building. People can sit on the bench and have a few minutes’ relax after class.
59
INSTALLATION | AURORA
THE MOVING AURORA
60
Color changing spotlights was used in this design. Each light bulb can turn its color gradually along with the spectrum: yellow-green-blue-purple-magenta-red-orange as a circulation. I set the order so they turned on one by one and put them in a circle, which makes the colors seem moving from the first bulb to last one. I also timing the circulation period to set the right number of bulbs, so when the last bulb turns orange the first one turns yellow perfectly. WIth the meditative music, I hope people can enjoy a few minutes’ escape from their intensive life here.

CERAMICS+EMPTY=EMPTY VASES This is another design using my card system. I draw ‘ceramics’ and ‘empty’ from the pile this time. How can we make a ceramic piece empty while they are already empty? These vases are designed to evoke their simplest forms – playing with negative space and the notion of vases as containers. What remains are outlined suggestions of a vase, which serve to support and uphold the dried flowers within. They are empty in visual but practical to use.

66
GO FURTHER! At the beginning of the furniture chapter, we use ‘plastic + easy’ to get zip chair, then ‘zip chair + empty’ delivered empty chair. What if we mix things up and try to have some follow-up design about the empty vases? How about the possibilities of and ‘empty vases + easy’? I tried two ways to make the making process easy: changing the material or using some technique to simplify the making process. During the material exploration I tried epoxy clay and paper clay, or twisted wire dipped into liquid rubber. Also I tried to use a large syringe extruding the clay out to make the strips for the vase.
PRODUCT | EMPTY VASES
LINES IN SPACES Finally I used rapid prototyping because the machine can give a perfect shape and details, which hand shaped ceramic can’t. So this can be seen as an improvement of the new process. After I finished the rapid prototyping process I applied flocking on the vases to make them colorful and get a pleasant texture as well.
67
PRODUCT | FOLDING VASES
FOLDING VASES This set is another follow-up design of the ceramic empty vases. This set starts from the words ‘empty vases + folding”. In the original set I use the vase’s outline as the frame. So as a continuous project I use the same principle in this design by draw the silhouette and laser cut it out from a piece of steel, then fold it into a corner shape. 68
