ROMANCE YOUR SOUL

SESSION - I

WITH

REGINA

Regina Victoria Cates, a transformational author and positivity junkie, inspires tens of thousands of people every day to live lives of limitless possibility. Through her Los Angeles–based company, Romancing Your Soul, she guides people to lead with their hearts. Now with the debut of her first book, Lead with Your Heart: Create Deep Relationships, Avoid Problems, and Make Life Easier, Regina is reaching out to a wider audience.

On my 43rd bir thday, I remember sitting on the couch with my dogs huddled around me. I was rapidly going through one box of tissues and was about to open a second. The tears did not stop. I sobbed because it was my bir thday and life sucked. I felt helpless and hopeless, wanting someone to heal me, someone to complete me. Without someone to rescue me and cheer me on, I did not imagine much chance for happiness. Destined to be miserable and lonely, I was fully caught up in the largest pity par ty I had ever hosted, when something extraordinary happened. Out of the blue the words, Do you enjoy feeling this way? passed through my consciousness. “Of course not,” I screamed out loud to no one. Who do you think is actually responsible for creating the happy and fulfilled life you want? In the instant it took for “I am,” to roll off my lips, the idea that someone outside me had power to heal the holes within my hear t vanished. I became empowered by the truth. Creating the life I wanted was completely an inside job. If I am my own worst enemy, how can I be my own best friend? I was the only one capable of developing the intimacy, self-acceptance, peace, love, and happiness for which I longed. On September 4th each year I celebrate the day I was born. When the gathering is over and friends and family leave, I retreat to a quiet place. Spending a few moments alone, I pay tribute to my 43rd bir thday, the day I ended my suffering by looking within to find the biggest fan, most loving life par tner, and best friend I will ever have. That is the “Bir th-day” I began to live. People will come and go in your life. You are the only constant companion you will have from bir th to death. You are and will always be the most impor tant person in your life. Be your biggest fan, most loving life par tner, and best friend.

Q. What specific skills do you bring as a Child Development Professional?

A. My ability to connect with children first, and correct later. I keep things very simple and deliver in a manner in which children would receive. I personalize content to fit into a child’s needs. Every child is unique. Every child is God’s own gift. I work on content keeping this in mind. Q. How would you define success? It’s not a skill so how can it be learnt?

A. Success is a very relative term. To me, if a child learns to ‘take charge’ of his/her life and lead with clarity, that is Success ! If they learn to lead their lives today, tomorrow they will do an AWESOME job of leading their families and their organizations and even their country! Q. Give me an example of a learning intervention you implemented which was successful. Why do you think it worked well? A. We always believe in ‘experiential learning’. A

child is exposed to ‘real life’ activities and projects. Learning happens ‘real time!’. For example, a 5 year old is taken to a super market, made to bill products all by herself and money management is taught at that

young age. If it’s a module on healthy eating, then they interact with a chef, learn to make their own ‘rainbow salads’! We deal with children from age 3-15 yrs. Q. What has been the most difficult situation in training children that you have had to deal with and what did you do? A. Frankly, nothing strikes my memory! It’s

never been tough working with children. This comes naturally to me more because am in love with what I do! In fact, I have had several difficult situations with parents! Adults are more complicated to handle than kids! ;-) Q. What were the three most important things to get your business up and running? A. a)A mindset of an entrepreneur! The

ability to burn the bridge and keep on even when things go wrong! b) The Guts to risk your life and even your last piece of gold to get things up and running!

c) The ability to put together a fantastic team to take a dream forward. Q. When you started out, what specific idea, purpose or vision was your key driving force? A. The suffocation in our current education system

was a key driving force. Children are dumped into a claustrophobic environment for 8 hours every day! Watte crime!..I wanted to set them free. Help them think out of the box and give their BEST every day. Q. What development methods have you used and which have proven the most effective in your experience? A. No academic development methods used. Content

is kept as simple as possible. ‘connect first.correct later’..thats the only philosophy that works! Q. How different is working with children from working with adults? A. Working with children is super FUN! They absorb,

global competition. The ability to think, take decisions and communicate with clarity and confidence are the only assets a child needs to possess today. First benchers in schools are NOT necessarily first rankers in life today! Q. How did you venture into this niche area of Child Development? A. A burning desire and a passion to

transform lives brought me into this. Q. What areas do Parents require inputs for overall child development? A. LEADERSHIP BEGINS AT HOME!

Parents need to learn to love their children unconditionally, accept them as they are and bring out the BEST in every child.

Q. What are your strategies used to climb towards your vision “Transforming At least a Million Lives Globally” A. BIG Dreams. Baby Steps. Developing one

child at a time. That’s the only strategy. Q. Do you plan to expand further with the franchising model or setting up own centers? A. We have 6 centers now. And are expanding

slowly and steadily

Q. How is the quality of learning maintained? A. Quality is NEVER compromised. Every faculty

goes through at least six months of training with us, until they are allowed to operate independently on the floor with kids. Moreover, we do NOT take more than 15 children per batch. The student adult ratio is 1:5. Q. What are the development methodologies being used? Is there a post programme evaluation conducted on the child to assess the benefit the child has received after the programme? A. Yes Q. What are the common aspirations of parents, who enroll children into your school? A. Most parents want their children to overcome

their shyness, fear and communicate better. Q. What role does leadership play for an entrepreneur? How have you demonstrated this with your team? A. Leadership for an entrepreneur = ability to set

hard is when I was pregnant with my second one. It was an accidental pregnancy. That was the time I had incurred a 15 lakh loss due to a wrong partnership in business! My hubby had lost his job and we had a 3.5 year young son! I had to choose between feeding my son or the baby in my tummy. Getting even a glass of milk was a struggle. But still, we kept on…overcame. Ways to reduce Stress You cannot eliminate stress from your life but you can find ways to reduce it by different ways of coping. 1) We humans have the tendency to feel guilty for every little thing we have done wrong, irrespective of whether it was considered wrong by others. Stop feeling this guilt. It will only make you stressed and which in turn can lead to other physical and mental disorders. 2) Be Firm in your decisions and stop letting other people make your decisions for you. 3) Have feasible goals, don’t aim for the sky and get stressed and disappointed if you don’t attain it. 4) Prioritize your life. First things first, then comes the next. 5) Don’t constantly postpone what you have to do. Do it and be done with it instead of mulling about it and getting stressed. 6) Reward yourself and give yourself a pat on the back for things well done. 7) Don’t expect things to work out perfectly. The lower your expectations, the lower your stress. 8) Live in the moment and stop worrying about the past or the future.

of India Indian cuisine has a glorious unbroken tradition of 3000 years. Over these millennia, it has absorbed innumerable influences

RAMA KRISHNAN CEO, Piizza Republic India

from all over the world, resulting in hundreds of ethnic cuisines, cooked across the country. From the spartan Namboodiri cuisine, which still frowns on the ‘foreign’ chili, the Moplah cuisine with its rich Arab notes, the still mysterious Kodava cuisine with roots reaching to the ancient Greeks, the arid cuisines of Rajasthan & Chettinadu, the royal cuisine of the Moguls, the fusion cuisine of Kerala Iyers & Hebbar Iyengars, to the rich and diverse Saraswat cuisine & the SE Asian influenced cuisine of the North east India, we have a multitude of rich, ethnic cuisines all over India. These are best understood in a general framework of a Thali. A basic thali consists of a starch (Rice / flatbread), a protein stew (usually lentils), a dry vegetable curry, a raw / cooked yogurt curry, pickle, papad (cracker bread), a dessert and a fruit. Salad, yogurt, chutneys, beverages, more curries, sweets & starters appear in elaborate Thalis. Each region / cuisine inserts its own starch, protein, vegetables and curries into this matrix, creating its own Thali. CHENNAI SPICE | FEBRUARY 23rd 2013 | 26

of India Many Indian ethnic cuisines are highly ritualistic and have elaborate serving and eating rituals. Food has to be served in a par-

ticular order and each food item has its own place on the plate. A Thali neatly bypasses these serving & eating rituals, allowing the creation of an attractive, instant plated meal with minimal fuss. In fact the same logic can be extended to cuisines across the world. All mature cuisines across the world have a starch, a protein source, fresh vegetables, fruits, drinks and desserts in theirmain meal. If these are served together, on a single plate, they become a Thali. Looked this way, we can sya that the Indian Thali belongs to the same family as the Mediterranean / Middle East Meze, the Spanish Tapas, Korean Banchan, Chinese Dimsum or the Italian Antipasto. All these consist of small portions of various ingredients served together. Some of these like the Tapas / Antipasto are served as snacks / appetizers whereas some like the Thali / Meze / Banchan become a complete meal. HAIR NIGHTMARE? Dr. Talat Salim Hair expert

Types of hair and scalp conditions

There are basically 3 types of scalp : oily, dry and normal. When the oil glands( sebaceous glands) in the scalp secrete excess oil, it travels down the hair shaft, causing excessive oiliness of the scalp and hair. Oily hair appears lank, dark and coarse. In contrast, dry hair is result of the lack of sebum and oil. Flakiness of the scalp and dandruff are a direct result of dryness. The hair looks limp, becomes less elastic and is more susceptible to breakage and damage. Normal hair is healthy, silky hair without over-dry ends or over-oily roots. It is the easiest to care for. This week we will look at the care that should be taken for dry hair. MAIL US

Caring for dry hair Even the healthiest of hair can become dry and brittle at some point. Causes of dry hair can range from environmental to genetics. Over exposer to sun, hard water, chemical hair treatment, which contains peroxide bleach, hair colouring and styling products, also makes hair dry. Dry hair tends to be thin and rough. It

is susceptible to tangles, damage, breakage and split ends. The primary aim is to replenish the oil and the moisture in the hair. That is why the emphasis here is on conditioning. Little care of hair will go a long way to prevent dry and frizzy hair. The use of strong-action shampoo is prohibited for dry hair. Often a generous oil application and massage is recommended before washing the hair. Frequent shampooing is harmful for dry hair. For moisturising the dry hair, a moisturizer application is required.

Aromatic cosmetic care for dry hair Here are some natural, time-tested recipes to replace chemical products.

To make the hair shine: • A few drops of ylang ylang spread on the palm of your hand and applied to freshly washed dry hair gives it an instant shine and keeps split ends away. • Add few drops of red clover, chamomile to your base oil, like almond oil or lavender oil, bay oil and sandalwood oil to warm sesame oil. Apply on the scalp and hair. Wrap your hair in a warm, damp towel.

The protein conditioner: Beat together one tablespoon of castor oil, one tablespoon of almond oil, one tablespoon of glycerine, a teaspoon of cider vinegar and a teaspoon of protein, plus 4 drops of sandalwood. Apply it on the scalp and leave for 20mins. Rinse with clear water.

A special massage oil/toner: In equal quantities of castor oil and coconut oil, add a teaspoon of lavender essential oil. Heat a little and massage gently into the scalp at night. Rinse or shampoo in the morning, follow the routine at least twice a week.

did you know? The Nadaswaram , is one of the most popular classical musical instruments in Carnatic Music and is also the world’s loudest non-brass acoustic instrument. In South Indian Hindu culture, the Nadaswaram is considered to be very auspicious, and it is a key musical instrument played in almost all Hindu weddings and temples of the South Indian tradition. It is also called Mangala Vadyammangala (auspicious), vadyam (instrument) The body of the Nadaswaram is made out of the wood of a tree called aacha although nowadays bamboo, sandalwood, copper, brass, ebony and ivory are also used. The Nadaswaram contains three parts namely, kuzhal, thimiru, and anasu . It is a double reed instrument with a conical bore which gradually gets bigger towards the lower end. The top portion has a metal staple (mel anaichu) into which is inserted a small metallic cylinder (kendai) which carries the mouthpiece made of reed. Besides spare reeds, a small ivory or horn needle is also attached to the instrument, and used to clear the reed of saliva and other debris and allows free passage of air. A metallic bell (keezh anaichu) forms the bottom end of the instrument. The Nadaswaram has seven finger-holes, and five additional holes drilled at the bottom which can be stopped with wax to modify the tone. The Nadaswaram has a range of two and a half octaves. The Smaller version of Nadaswaram is called Mukhavina and is used in South Indian folk music, and is usually only about a foot and a half in length .
