When and where did you begin your career? A. My career began in 1994 when I joined a friend’s uncle’s ad agency as a copywriter. I was in Chennai, and had just finished a course in mass communication and journalism from the Madras Christian College. What do you typically tell people when they ask you what you do? A. Because of the number of things that I like to do and I occupy myself with, explaining that question has always been tough!! But after a lot of thought, I have narrowed it down somewhat. I am a creative consultant who provides services in acting, voiceovers, singing, copywriting, and anything that involves creative pursuits through my consultancy, Jumpstart. I have two companies under the Jumpstart umbrella, one being Synergy Training Solutions, which is my soft skills training company, and the other being Stagefright Productions, my theatre and music company, through which I produce shows, provide theatre training and as of late, also offer professional representation for bands and other groups. Were you always involved in theatre? A. Theatre was something I tried way back in 1991 while I was still living in Cochin. I indulged in it for a year or so, and then ended up in Chennai, where things really took off for me.
connect
Why did you choose Chennai to set up base? A. Having completed my B.Sc. degree at Sacred Heart (Thevara) College in Cochin, I decided that I wanted to look at advertising as a career. So I applied for and got admission to Calicut University for a 2-year M.A. in Mass Communications and a 1-year course at the Madras Christian College. I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with myself, so the 1-year course seemed like less of a risk, in case I didn’t enjoy it. After MCC, I just stayed on and started working. So it wasn’t really a conscious decision. Who or what was the inspiration behind starting Stagefright Productions? A. I was the director of a 2004 production of the musical ‘Grease’, which my friend, the late Roshni Menon, had organized. After the success of that show, we realized that we had something good, and we decided to try and make a go of a proper theatre company. The name ‘Stagefright’ was a name that some friends and I had thought of almost 8 – 9 years earlier when we used to regularly get together to read scripts and work on our theatre skills.

How did you go about setting up Stagefright Productions? A. There was no real process involved. After the success of our first show, we were fortunate to get offers to stage shows from other people, so for the first year, we were busy. It just happened and kept rolling on! How many employees did you start off with? A. Till date, Stagefright Productions has never had any employees, other than those of us who started the company. Initially, there were three of us (Roshni, my wife Neesha, and myself) but once Roshni moved abroad to study, it fell upon the two of us to continue the company. Whenever we stage a show, we have open auditions, not just to find the cast, but to put together a crew as well. It’s a lot of work training people from scratch each time – obviously – but it gives people the chance to try something that they might have always wanted to but never really had the chance to, and I love the idea of guiding someone so that they can do that. It’s not that we don’t want regular team members; we’ve just never really met anyone who wanted to be part of the team, and we haven’t gone looking for team members either. What specific media did you use to market Stagefright Productions during launch and thereafter? A. Stagefright was started long before Facebook, Twitter and other social media – which are free to use – were available. So we were mainly de-

pendent on the print media to assist us. We made it a point of establishing cordial relations with people in the print and electronic media, as that was our only option. What were the three most important things under consideration to get your business up and running? A. Well, in our case, Stagefright was never our primary source for earning a living, so getting the business “up and running” was not a priority. Depending on circumstances, there were occasions when we went on a hiatus and it didn’t affect us. We have always worked out of home, and the only overheads I need to consider are the space taken for the trunks full of costumes and props that we have accumulated over the years! We need a bigger house now!! How does your business model work? A. Despite the progress that some theatre groups have made with regard to making it a full-fledged business, I still believe that theatre is a highrisk venture, and one cannot guarantee that a show will succeed. At the end of the day, theatre groups are not competing with other groups; they are competing with every single form of entertainment that the city offers: cinema, dance, music, sporting events, etc. Therefore, the model I have always followed is to secure 100% of my production costs through sponsorship, and then produce the show.

Were there many players in the same field when you started out? A. No, there were remarkably few, and I guess in many ways, that made it easier. Because of the work I do as a member of the World Theatre Day – Chennai Chapter, I have discovered that today in Chennai, there are more than TWENTY English theatre groups! This does not include Tamil groups, and also does not comment on their capabilities, but the fact remains that today, everyone thinks that theatre is a viable – or at least – a fun medium to work in.
I absolutely believe in the concept of working as a team, and for that reason, I am extremely accommodating when people say they have constraints with rehearsals. In fact, I am often made fun of because of the extensive and colourful Excel sheets that I generate before I start rehearsals! But as I am not in a position to be paying tens of thousands of rupees to people, I need to make sure that I give them space and make it as convenient as possible for them to be part of my shows. I don’t hesitate to stand up for my team and defend them and I make sure that they treat each other with respect as well.
What makes you stand out from other theatre companies? A. Experience, willingness to work with anyone and respect for our audiences. We’ve been around since 2004, and I’ve been performing onstage since 1991, so that’s a lot of experience that I am able to bring to the table.
I enjoy the idea of training people in theatre skills, so I tend to have long rehearsal periods (averaging 4 – 5 months)
We seem to be one of the few theatre companies in Chennai that always has open auditions. I guess directors prefer to work with people they are already familiar with, but in our case, we love the idea of meeting new people and working with them. If I see potential in someone, I am willing to work with them, provided they also have a positive attitude towards learning. In fact, I always say that I prefer attitude over aptitude! So, even if someone is a brilliant actor, they don’t stand a chance with me if they have a chip on their shoulder!

Finally, we always remember that Chennai is still a market where people go for theatre as “time-pass” and therefore, we look at themes that will appeal to people, regardless of who is staging it. While we have a small fan base, I don’t think we’ve yet reached a point where people will say, “Oh wow, it’s a Stagefright show!” and we’ll sell out as a result. What’s the biggest thing you struggle with as an entrepreneur? A. In my case, I work as a freelancer, so often, the question is: where will the next paycheck come from?

Who has inspired you in your life and why? A. Wow, tough question. There have been many people I might have admired, such as a musician or an actor, but no one who has really INSPIRED me. As a teenager there was no one who inspired me enough that I would want to put posters of them on my bedroom wall. I think I am inspired by people who can re-invent themselves according to necessity, so that they stay relevant. What do you consider to be your greatest achievement? A. Deciding to marry my wife, and more recently, to be a father to my son. There was a lot of thought that went into both of those decisions, both emotional and practical, and they were the best “business” decisions I ever made. What’s your most memorable experience as an entrepreneur? A. I was contacted recently by a client who requested me to attend their 2-day offsite conference as a motivational speaker. What made it memorable was that the person read about me on the Net and took a chance by inviting me. It was a pleasant change to have someone whom I didn’t know acknowledge my work. What does a day-in-the-life of Fred consist of? A. Becoming a father has brought a lot more structure to my life that I didn’t need to have earlier, but my days are still pretty flexible. I’m up

by 7 am or so, and leave home by 8:30 to drop my son off at his school. From there I either head to my client’s office, where I work as a training consultant, or for any meetings I may have, or back home to work for the next few hours. In between I usually have to schedule in a voiceover or a singing assignment. By evening I head to rehearsals (if there’s a show happening) or else have meetings for show-related work, because that’s when people get free from office. Depending on how crazy things are, these meetings might go on till 10 pm over dinner. I deliberately work a lot from home, so that I can spend time with my son and be there when he goes to sleep. I’m in bed by midnight or so, and once I hit the sack, trust me, I pass out! What has Stagefright Productions’ greatest production till date? A. We hit it big with our production of ‘Grease’ back in 2004, and honestly, I was never really happy with most of the shows we did until 2011, when we staged ‘Dirty Dancing – The Musical’. So it’s a toss-up between those two. Do you train aspiring actors in theatre? A. Because we have open auditions, we end up meeting new people every time we stage a show. I look for potential in the auditions, and 9 times out of 10, I get it right, and the person can be trained. There is a small

percentage of people who are difficult to work with because they either have an ego about being told what to do or else they are just terrible actors who don’t understand the craft!! So yes, we train aspiring actors, but I expect those actors to have basic skills and attitude in place first. What is Stagefright Talent Management Services about? A. I’m always being made fun of by my friends because of how hyperorganized I am and how I create extensive Excel sheets for everything, so I decided to put that ability to use by offering services to bands and other groups for professional representation. I offer three services, namely: a.Professional representation with event managers and other clients b.Admin services, such as handling accounts and responding to emails c.Promotion via social media or with the print and electronic media Any outstanding talent that you have spotted that we need to look out for? A. I work with three bands out of Chennai, namely Incarcerated, Rusty Moe and Tails On Fire. Of these, the first two have been around for awhile, but Tails On Fire is just 2 years old. I really think they can go places and I’m looking forward to their success.
connect
What else do you do other than produce plays, manage rock bands, professional dubbing, acting and making ad films? Good god! Are you for real? A. LOL! Yes, it does seem like a lot, but ever since I moved to Chennai, back in 1993, I have tried to abide by the MCC motto, which is ‘Carpe Diem’ – Seize the Day. A desk job is great for a lot of people, but it would kill me to have to do that every day and not have some kind of creative outlet. And I realized long back (through a family friend) that those creative outlets do not need to be restricted to what your do outside of work; if you can make your hobbies BECOME your work, you’re gonna love what you do every day! So, I push myself pretty hard – not necessarily to make as much money as I can – but to be happy and doing what I enjoy. What does family have to say about it all? What makes Freddy tick? A. My wife, Neesha, runs Stagefright with me, and she has always been my biggest support. It’s not a cliché when I say that I couldn’t have made it this far without her. We also heard that your wife doles out some mouth watering yummies. Name the yummiest one. A. Too many to name!!She started Babycakes in 2011 and has been

honing her skills since then. She loves experimenting and I get to be the lucky guinea pig when she tries something new! How do you manage to support her when your hands are already so full? A. Well, for me, entrepreneurship was never about starting a company, hiring 10,000 people and taking over the entire world. It was more about being happy, providing for my family, and getting to do interesting and different work. So when something is important to me, I prioritize it and make time. We all have 24 hours; some of us just use it more efficiently than others. Tell us about a time when the going got really tough. A. In 2003, just before I started freelancing full-time, I was working for a radio station at Chennai. I was hired as an RJ and then when the channel changed strategies, I stayed on as a producer. I was there for another 6 months or so when some of us were told that we were being let go. I had just bought a new car, and made a few investments, stuff like that. It was shattering, but it led to the creation of Jumpstart Creative Consultancy. Looking back, what’s one thing you would do differently? A. I would try to study more. You come to appreciate academics as you
connect
grow older, because you start to see where you can use them in a practical sense. Also, being in India, people tend to judge a book by its cover, so that sometimes plays a role in getting work. For example, if I was running a company, and I needed to hire an administrative manager, and I was choosing between a graduate who has 25 years of experience and an MBA who has 5 years, I would pick the former. But for some reason, companies regularly go for the younger guy, who just ends up making mistakes cos he doesn’t have the experience, and then to top it off, he also quits and leaves the minute he gets a “better” offer. Strange, isn’t it? But that’s the way the cookie crumbles. If you could offer a first-time entrepreneur with an innovative business idea only one piece of advice, what would it be? A. Make sure your idea will last. Recent news reports state that Facebook popularity is already on the decline with younger teens. What creative things do you do to develop a likeable company culture? A. Well, as I mentioned, it’s not completely relevant in my case, but I try to keep the atmosphere fun, disciplined (if we start on time, we can finish on time and people can still have time to lead their own lives), and make sure that people learn at least one new thing when they walk away.

How do you think being an entrepreneur has turned you into a better person? I value time a whole lot more, I value relationships that I have with people, because networking is what makes everything work, and despite the naysayers who warned me that starting my own business would not leave me with time of my own, I have been able to achieve exactly that, mostly because I’m happy with what I have, and I’m not trying to succeed on anybody else’s terms.

Joint Family vs Nuclear Family DR. MINI RAO Psychologist
The Joint family system has been around since ancient times. The head of the family, the father is given the utmost importance. The family consists of his wife, sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law and grandchildren. The father as head of the family makes all the important decisions, advice the family members on all matters, controls the finances and has the most authority in the family. However, with the passage of time, the joint family system has disintegrated, giving rise to the nuclear family system. The nuclear family consists of a man, his wife and their children. Here the mother is able to look after the needs of her children. She takes care of her husband and children’s needs in a much better way than she could in a joint family. The nuclear family is an independent unit who earns, saves and spends only for themselves. Both parents work, earn and invest the money for the education of their children. They can afford better schools which in turn will provide them with better job opportunities. Since the husband and wife have more privacy, they spend more time with one another and get to know each other, understand each other’s needs and desires. They both focus on their children and can give their undivided attention to them unlike in joint families where there are many siblings and children and the attention isn’t focussed and individualized. Why joint families have broken away and become nuclear families is due to better job opportunities available in the cities. The attraction of the big salaries, the interference of the head of the family even in trivial matters, the lack of privacy, and the lack of living space to accommodate so many members of a family has led to the disintegration of joint families. To cost of living is very high in the cities. In many cases, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo don’t get along too well and the constant tension and stress leads them to live by themselves away from the joint family. In a joint family the women are so busy providing for so many extended family members that they never find time to look after their children. These children are neglected and often seek attention from unwanted sources leading to more trouble. Children from joint families are not educated much as they are compelled to join the family business and take over from their elders.

Joint Family vs Nuclear Family DR. MINI RAO Psychologist knowledge and culture are safeguarded from one generation to the next. Each member of the family has his or her particular role to play to contribute towards the betterment of the family. A joint family is about oneness, selflessness, tolerance, cooperation. Children learn from a very young age to adjust to their surroundings, are taught virtues of patience, respect for elders, discipline, good habits at an early age. Everybody learns to give and share and it is a congenial atmosphere for the family to grow in. In a nuclear family, a working mother tries her best to strike a balance between work and family. She tries to find a good work-life balance. She is more independent in a nuclear family where she takes the decisions about her family on her own and she has to deal with the consequences of her decisions on her own without any support from any other members of her extended family. The joint system may at times prove a hindrance to individual enterprise and initiative. Although joint family has a number of advantages, it does not always work. When many people of different personalities, egos, opinions and dispositions live under one common roof, differences are bound to crop up. Each family member may stress on what they feel is right and there may be ego clashes leading to fights and unpleasantness among the family members. When this kind of attitude prevails, the atmosphere is not conducive to peace and harmony. Modern means of communication and urbanizing rural areas have changed perceptions and brought new ideas and a new society has evolved. Being in close touch with cities that offer all the comforts and joys of modern life, the system of joint family system is slowly but surely lessening.
In joint families, since there are many earning members there is not much of a motivation to earn and add to the already fat purse of the family. Hard work is rarely rewarded and laziness seldom punished. The joint family members are not very proactive and dynamic. They lead a complacent life which is not healthy. Now with changing times, new customs and progressive ideas of young people are being resisted by the older generation. This annoys the members of the younger generation and makes them rebel and run away from home in seek of space and freedom. There are advantages and disadvantages to both joint family and nuclear family but much depends on the nature of individual members. How cooperative, how compromising, how adjusting they are to live happily with many members of their extended family or how intolerant, how selfish or how rigid and inflexible they are to other people’s views and opinions. A nuclear family has its disadvantages too. The high cost of living in the cities make it a necessity for both parents to work leaving their children unsupervised and neglected which may have disastrous consequences. Parents are too busy to spend quality time with their children and the children find no one to turn to for advice or discussion. They spend their childhood without the much needed love and company of their parents. The best thing for young adults to adjust in either joint or nuclear families would be to educate the children and make them aware of the advantages and disadvantages of both types of families and let them have their pick. Grandparents/Parents should advise them when necessary or when they move towards the wrong path and not nag them all the time.. They should openly communicate all matters with their children and this would reduce the communication gap between grandparents/parents and their children. Be happy. Stay happy. Love your family and friends and forget the people that don’t make sense!

Caramel Candy by Cheryl Rajkumar
METHOD Prepare a 8 x 8 square pan by greasing with butter. In a medium size heavy steel pan, mix sugar, salt and cream. Warm the mixture at medium heat. You’ll be able to see the different stages of caramelization of sugar better in a steel pan. Add honey and mix well to form a homogenous mixture. Stir constantly, else the sugar will crystallize. Add the butter and mix well till it dissolves completely. Bring the mixture to a boil keeping the heat at med-high. This stage is the longest which takes about 30 mins or more. If the mixture still does not boil, increase the heat a bit. Once the mixture starts boiling, DO NOT STIR. If you’re using a thermometer, check the temperature. It has to be between 245 degree F – 248 degree F (firm ball stage). Do not let the temperature go higher as the caramel will harden.
Makes approximately 40 one inch pieces.
INGREDIENTS 1 cup Heavy Cream *Can use Amul cream 1 cup Granulated Sugar ½ cup Honey ¼ cup Unsalted Butter ½ tsp Salt Instant thermometer or a bowl of cold water
If you do not own a thermometer, do the cold water test. Drop half a spoonful of caramel in a bowl of cold water. Let it stand for few seconds. Now, using your fingers take the caramel and form a soft ball. If it holds shape and firm, the caramel is ready. If the caramel does not hold shape, then it needs more boiling to get rid of the water content as the sugar concentration is low. You’re done boiling when the ball holds shape or the temperature recorded in the thermometer is at firm ball stage. Remove the pan from heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Coorg - Embrace nature by Mansi Mehta
Tired of working long hours, running behind schedules, endless traffic woes and never ending cups of coffee? Looking for a quick escape from the boulders of boredom piling on? Desiring an impromptu, relaxing break from the daily rigmarole? With the summer holidays round the corner, who wouldn’t love to plan a short getaway? The answer to these perennial questions is the concept of “home stays” in beautiful hill stations. On one of our yearly sojourns, bored of the same old hotel and touristy rituals, we decided to indulge ourselves with a weekend break at a home stay in Coorg. Thus, with our bags packed, my husband and I decided to travel to Coorg, a destination soaked in mist, lush forests, coffee and spice plantations and breathtaking scenic views. Dubbed as the Scotland of India, Coorg or Kodagu is a beautiful hill station set amidst valleys, forests and mountains. It’s just the right dose of medicine prescribed to the tired and discerning traveller. Coorg is situated in the Western Ghats and is about 250 kilometers from Bangalore. Our journey started from Mysore, where a pre-paid taxi was waiting at the station to take us to our home stay, Kabbe Holidays. There are a number of home stays in Coorg, whereby Coorg has been voted as one of the three best home stay hotspots in India. If you are looking for local homemade food, take a walk in the plantations and experience the finest hospitality, homestays in Coorg are your best bet. After a long, winding journey, our chosen home stay was a welcome sight. The homestay, Kabbe holidays is much loved for its proximity to nature and serenity. It is located in a coffee estate and is the perfect weekend getaway. The owners have opened their home to families, nature lovers and

did you know? Kuchipudi is the classical dance form of Andhra Pradesh. It derives its name from the village of Kuchelapuram, a small village about 65 kms from Vijayawada. There is a legend concerning the origins of Kuchipudi. It is said that there was once an orphan of Srikakulam who was raised by the village. These kind people got him married at childhood as was the custom of the time. Then he went to Udipi for Vedic studies. During his study, he acquired the name Sidhendra Yogi. After a time he returned to Srikakulam. However, the village elders ordered him to go to his wife’s house to assume his family responsibilities. On the journey he came upon a river. As he was swimming across the river he suddenly realised that he could swim no further. He then prayed to God to give him the strength to make it across. He did make it, and upon reaching the shore he vowed to become a ‘ sanyasi ‘ and devote his life to religious affairs. He then settled in the village of Kuchelapuram and started teaching. Here, he instructed Brahmin boys in devotional dance dramas based upon religious themes. These religious plays were presented as offerings to God in the tradition of the Natya shastra. He named this art form “Kuchipudi”. Kuchipudi flourished as a dramatic form of dance for hundreds of years.Modern Kuchipudi acquired its present form in the 20th century.
The Academy of Indian Music & Arts (AIMA),founded in 1984 by the legendary musician Padma Bhushan Dr. T.V. Gopalakrishnan and is registered Charitable Trust. A Kuchipudi performance usually begins with some stage rites, after which each of the character comes on to the stage and introduces him/herself with a Dharavu (a small composition of both song and dance) to introduce the identity, set the mood, of the character in the drama. The drama then begins. The dance is accompanied by song in Carnatic music and accompanied by instruments. Kuchipudi shares many common elements with Bharathanatyam.Beyond the stylistic differences of Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam steps, there are certain types of dances that are unique to Kuchipudi: Specifically there is the Tarangam which is unique, where in they dance with a plate with two diyas (small oil-burning candles) in his or her hands while balancing a “kundi” (small vessel) containing water. The dance styles in the state are based on the standard treatises.Abhinaya Darpana and Bharatarnarnava, which is sub-divided into Nattuva Mala and Natya Mala. Nattuva Mala is of two types — the Puja dance performed on the Balipitha in the temple and the Kalika dance performed in a Kalyana Mandapam. Natya Mala is of three kinds — ritual dance for gods, Kalika dance for intellectuals and Bhagavatam for common place. The Natya Mala is a dance-drama performed by a troupe, consisting only of men, who play feminine roles.
