Hilltop Retreat: Bedford Hills, NY The long unobstructed view atop this hillside perch in Bedford was the ideal site for creating an awardwinning vanishing edge pool. Reflecting the arc of the land, the 55ft leading edge is punctuated by three sculptural stones that appear to balance on water’s edge, adding a sense of drama to the overall effect. Simple in form, the pool is the focal point of the surrounding landscape. The first view of the pool is experienced through the portal of a custom designed mahogany gate set within a perfectly clipped hornbeam hedge encircling the pool environment.

Within the pool environment, there are two intermediate levels: the first providing a connection to the home and its many amenities including a wraparound deck overlooking the pool and landscape beyond as well as a custom designed indoor-outdoor room, serving as the owners’ own interpretation of a pool “cabana”; the pool level is accessed and flanked by two sets of monolithic bluestone steps through a modern apron of clipped boxwood. Within the pool area one finds details such as an expansive bluestone terrace with planted joints, thoughtfully placed sculpture procured by the owner during travels abroad, and a custom designed daybed alcove. The architectural style of the original center and new building reflects that of Frank Lloyd Wright. Taking visual cues from Wright, the landscape design is based on his stained glass patterns, many of which are seen in the center. The interplay of geometric forms and use of primary colors was translated on the ground through the use of a variety of paving patterns and stone banding, landscape strips, plaza areas, and water, providing interest, direction and emphasis throughout the site.
GROUNDCOVER TYP.
Helping to achieve LEED certification goals, the landscape also integrates sustainable design features, such as a raingarden, decorative runnels that direct run-off from the roof to underground cisterns, and capture of HVAC condensate.

East Lake Park
existing conditions
Located in the heart of Atlanta, East Lake Park serves a diverse community in a rapidly transitioning neighborhood. Increasing and changing use patterns prompted the community to participate in a visioning process led by Park Pride, a local non-profit dedicated to preserving Atlanta’s parks. A concept plan identifies major capital improvements including improved circulation, a multi-use sports field, dog park, enhanced playground, and community garden. This conceptual master plan was developed under the supervision of Park Pride’s Director of Visioning.

Vine City Park In 2005 Park Pride, a non-profit dedicated to preserving and enhancing the City of Atlanta’s parks, in partnership with the City and residents of Vine City, was charged with transforming two vacant lots into a three acre park for residents of this southwest Atlanta neighborhood. Under the supervision of Park Pride’s Director of Community Visioning, three preliminary concepts were developed based on public comment and the leadership of an all volunteer planning committee. The design responds to the communities desire for a space that serves as a nexus for informal and formal gatherings. This is reflected in the design with the inclusion of garden rooms, a plaza amphitheater, and picnic area. The event lawn and playground will ensure that adequate active recreation amenities are available for local youth. Phase two elements include a gazebo, expanded sports lawn and walking paths with designated exercise stations and picnic pavilions. progress video courtesy of Gnoggin Studios https://vimeo. com/71728723
