REIMAGINING THE ‘INCOMPIUTO SICILIANO ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK’ (1/2) - Reconfigurable design through gaming Sicily’s landscape is dotted with incomplete structures from the 20th century. There are 696 unfinished buildings in Italy that have been identified to date with 40% of them are located in Sicily. They are the representation of political corruption and planning disasters, while also becoming a cultural symbol for the island. The incomplete structures are forms without functions and monuments without memories, so what are they? This project intends to de-construct the ‘Incompiuto’ in Giarre through gaming processes, setting up research methodologies in project 1 for the preparation of building project in the second semester.

Incompiuto Siciliano has been the key to interpreting public-sector architecture in Italy since the second world war. Its sheer scale, territorial extent and architectural oddness have made Incompiuto Siciliano essential to an understanding of Italy’s history over the last forty years. - Alterazioni Video, 2008

REIMAGINING THE ‘INCOMPIUTO SICILIANO ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK’ (2/2) - A new masterplan for Giarre using construction resources from the ‘Incompiuto’. Through the experimentations in term 1, the project identifies the incomplete buildings in Giarre as construction resources for the local communities. A redevelopment strategy is established for each of the ‘Incompiuto’, building up a collection of recycled materials available for use in the broader town. The proposals form a masterplan to regenerate an existing street in Giarre in which six specific building schemes are presented to test out different ways of incorporating the ‘Incompiuto’ in the construction of newer buildings. This enables the ‘Incompiuto’ to fulfil their original promises of providing community facilities.

NOMADIC FARM Facing the dairy crisis, Switzerland needs to find a solution to save its traditional family farms. The project explores the relationship between nature, urbanity, and industrialization behind the dairy industry within the Alps. Influenced by local transhumance activities, the building intends to explore the nomadic nature of farming and how it adapts to season change, proposing a dairy farm with 18 cows in the heart of Gruyères. With the facade made from hay bales, it is also the food for cow. Throughout a seasonal cycle, the hay is eaten up by cow, and the building is eaten up by hay.

UNEXPECTED LANDSCAPE In the project, a set of miniature models are set up in different corners of my flat. They intend to create micro-environments with everyday objects in unexpected places, creating contrasting scenes when people view the instillations from different distances. The project studies the change in scale inspired by traditional Asian landscape design and Chinese Shanshui.

CYCLETOPIA This project imagines a central cycling hub or ‘Cycletopia’ for the city of Oxford, while providing an interchange between different forms of transport. Cycling is seen as the ‘missing link’ between traveling on foot and travelling by public transport, in this case in the form of the railway. The design features a moving facade as rental bicycle ‘vending machine’, using a paternoster system to operate.

DORCHESTER FORUM The project aims to bring the market back to Dorchester, a historic market town, in a more central position to regenerate the town. Evoked by the Roman history of the town, the project is inspired by the Roman Forum and aims to explore the social meaning behind the marketplace, proposing a typology that integrates market and social programs. The scheme intends to create a stage to celebrate the interaction of people, becoming a social hub in Dorchester for people to shop and meet.
