“FWF” means “Strangers become Friends”in German. It is a joint project of the Universities in Erfurt, the City Council of Erfurt, and the Thüringer Institut für Akademische Weiterbildung e.V. In the project, international students are paired up with "godparents", or host families from Erfurt. According to my own experience in this project, I redesigned a service system for it to optimize the process and bring more participants in the future.
BACKGROUND
Introduction
"Fremde werden Freunde" (Strangers become Friends) is a project that I have participated in when I studied in Erfurt in Germany. It began in December 2002 and now has approximately 210 partnerships between students from more than 40 countries and host families from Erfurt. Each semester, a reception is organized for the international students and local hosts to meet each other. In the context of the project, international students are paired up with "godparents", or host families from Erfurt. Citizens of all ages and social classes take part in the project as hosts: they can be individuals or families, employed and unemployed people, retirees or young people, and members of various parties and organizations. Inspired by my own experience in this project, I want to design a more effective and attractive service system.

RESEARCH Starting from the target groups of this project: international students and local people, I did some research regarding culture integration, recalled my own experience and interviewed some students to get familiar with the current situation.
Students
There are approximately 150 new foreign students in Erfurt each year. The biggest problem for them is the German language.
Students always encounter cultural shock in their daily lives. They want to integrate into the local society as soon as possible.
Most students have difficulty finding an intern or work because of languages problems and the lack of social experience.
The local residents are willing to participate in events such us excursion at weekends, life sharing in cafes and so on.
As one of the odest cities in Germany, Erfurt has a rich heritage of history and culture treasure. The local want to share them with the foreign students.
Local people
Erfurt has a population of 213,354, about 30% of citizens are the elderly over 60 years old. They feel lonely from time to time. Data from Capital of State Thueringen

Student, 20 years old Hobby: computer games, table card games Partner: /
Student, 26 years old Hobby: history, swimming Partner: a retired engineer
University Coordinator, 36 years old Hobby: cooking, music, travel Partner: a senior student
"
I found a partner with the help of the project leader. She and I both wrote music in the hobby column. But she was a member of a rock band and I like classic music. I often feel embarrassed when she invited lots of friends to her band show......
" Unfortunately, I didn't find my tandem partner. I don't know why.
Maybe the staff can't find the right candidate, or he forgot to contact me. I don't have his contact information.
"
"
My partner is great! He correted the resume for me and often asked me to come to his house for parties or events. I think the project can organize some activities about the traditional culture regularly so that I can know more about the people and culture here.
I have learned a lot different cultures through this project and my tendem partners. I also want to introduce other people around me to join in it.

SYNTHESIS Before Participation

After Events
Future
PROBLEMS
The student/ local people don't know the basic information or preferences each other before they meet each other.
The student/ local people lose contact with each other when there’s no events for a long time.
The local companies find it difficult to hire some students after their graduation through this project.
The promotion and advertisement of this project are not yet enough.
The participants want to find the tandem who matches them best, but the choices are made by the staff member instead of themselves.
The events are not enough or attractive.
The students may lose interest or not keep contact with the project if only informed of events by e-mails for a long time.
Organize more activities Let the participants organize events and find candidates themselves on a public platform
Build a platform for students or companies with desire for work or employment
CHALLENGES
The student/ local people don't know they can find friens in Erfurt by this way.
OPPORTUNITIES
Make advertisement with diverse forms
Build a platform enabling the students and local people to reach each other
Concept My concept is to build up a platform for the foreign students and local people where they can reach each other, practice german, organize events by themselves, and learn about diverse culture.

Integration
I also recognised that one future focus in the concept of the project is the extension of the idea of "Strangers become Friends" to the business sector. Thuringian( the state Erfurt belongs to) companies could be able to take advantage of the potential that international students have for developing business relations with foreign companies.
7
SERVICE SYSTEM System Map The main stakeholders are foreign students and local people. We also need the financial support from local government and universities. Except for them, we could build a win-win cooperation with the local restaurants and travel agents. If the local companies need help in international cooperation, the students could also be a good choice.

Interview
The local company want to hire the international students to develope the business with foreign companies. They can make an advertisement online.
The students get the information and come for the interview. Both the company an the students can take the advantage of this project.
Start an Acitivity
Enjoy the Acitivity
Besides the Stammentisch, they can plan the rest of their activities on their own according to their common interests. Just start an event online and find others who want to join in.
The students join in the acitivity with his/her partner(s). Through it they can not only practice german but also learn about the local culture. If the acitivity is held by the local reataurant, they can alos write their reviews online.

SERVICE Touch Points Web Design
Find a Partner All the people who are searching for a partner are sorted by students or the local.
We decided to design a website for this project so that the users can take their initiative to reach each other and post related information about the event easily.
The users can type in key words such as hobbies or occupations.
My Acitivities The users can chat with the person in charge of the event to decide whether to join in it or not.
The event holders will also be shown on the page so that the users can write down comments. It's also a good opportunitiy for these holders to development new business.

SERVICE Touch Points Brochure Design Project Brief
To promote this project, we also designed the brochure. It can be put on the shelves in the universities or some public places to attracte more participants.
Considering that some old people are not familiar to the Internet, they can also fill the form about their personal information and request and send it back. The stuff member can also help them.

We found that the elderly with chronic diseases have difficulty taking medicine because of poor memory. So we wanted to design a more humane medicine box for them. The new product combines the daily-used family medicine kit with portable medicine boxes. We hope this product could optimize the user experience of these elderly people and help them take medicine in a more correct and convenient manner.

China has become an aging population country and the scale of medical market is expanding continuously.
The medical expenses of the elderly are 3 times that of the young.
Studies have shown that the elderly in China suffer from 6 diseases on average, including hypertension, cerebral infarction and other diseases requiring long-term medication.
Survey By distributing 102 questionaires, we defined the target users and discovered their needs.

DESIGN SYNTHESIS Challenges
Design Goal
After analyzing the user scenarios, we have summarized the following challenges.
Based on the chanllenges analyzed in the left, we summarized the corresponding user needs. Based on these needs we conducted a second round of secondary research about the features of smart medical products. After discussion, we categoried the design features from 4 aspects.
Limitation of Space There's no enough place for medical equipment. Some boxes are too deep to take out the medicine.
Disorder of Classification There's no clear classification inside the box. Old people mostly have poor vision, it could lead to taking out the wrong medicine.
Lack of Intelligence The boxes are always lack of intelligence. For example, the elderly often forget to take medicines because of poor memory. It is also difficult for them to take medicines out without light indication at night.
Simple style, clear design The white-gray tone with a brighter color, which makes people feel calm and peaceful
PVC material, safe and healthy for the elderly Smooth surface with rounded corner Moderate price, 100-200 yuan

E NC RA
We investigated the product information and user comments of the 3 most popular smart family medicine boxes sold on Taobao, one of the biggest online shopping platform in China.
We divided the FUNCTIONs into daily use, emergency use and travel for comparison.
Conclusion: Most of the existing products can satisfy the simple storage function. However, most smart medicine boxes are too small to storage different kinds of medicine and medical equipments. Besides, they are lack of portability. For exmaple, all the 3 products below can’t be carried with for a short-term trip. Last but not the least, their performance in individuation is not satisfactory. Therefore, we will focus on these advantages and drawbacks to improve our design.

After competitive analysis, we have analyzed the functions of more smart family medical boxes on Taobao. We divided all the functions into three categories: basic functions, extra functions and unnecessary functions.
PRODUCT DESIGN
Introduction This smart family medicine box consists of three parts: a common medicine box, a travel kit and a first aid kit. We hope that this product can solve the problem of medicine classification, forgetting to take medicine, etc. for the erderly. Besides, we want to make it easier for the guardians to be informed of the physical condition of the elderly.

Your Solo-Eating Adventure is a project which aims to help TU Delft students who feel embarrassed while eating alone in the canteen get relaxed and create less of a stereotype of eating alone. Users will find the food with special package when picking up their food in the canteen and then discover the whole story of other solo-diners inside it gradually while eating. After reading they can share their ideas and thoughts.
24
CONTEXTMAPPING Questionaire
36 responses: 69.4% european students, 30.6% asian students
Interview
4 interviewees, 2 chinese and 2 european students
Research Question: How is the current situation/context of eating alone? What's the common reason for your eating alone?
How’s your feelings when eating alone?
Generative session
Interviews
Conclusion 1. Eating by themselves is a common phenomenon among campus students. What’s the biggest challenge for you when eating alone?
2. The common reason for them to eat alone is that they happen to find on one to eat with. 3. Bordness, others’ notice or judgement and loneliness are the greatest challenges for solo-eaters. 4. 2 typical moments to those who think it uncomfortable to eat alone: standing in the crowd to find a seat ; sitting next to groupeaters, especially if they are acquaintance.
25
PERSONA Based on the questionnaire and interview results, PERSONA can be concluded to present students who feel uncomfortable when eating alone.
Wang International Student Arrived Delft for only 2 months 3-5 times eating alone every week
“ I feel anxious when finding a place and eating as if all the people around are watching me.”
Anna Dutch Student Studied here for over 4 years 1-2 times eating alone every week
“ I may feel embarrassed when sitting next to a group of people who we know each other like I’m pitied as a person with no friends.”
Current Emotions if eating with friends
walk into canteen pick up food&pay
finish food and get bored
finally find a seat start eating
leave thought goes
26
ANALYSIS First Round of Analysis
Some students feel uncomfortable when eating alone. When? They feel uncomfortable when surrounded by group-eaters or acquaintance. Why? They feel embarrassed because they assume others may make judgement on them. Why? They tend to become bored and self-conscious in such a situation. How? Give them guidance to something interesting or meaningful to do so that they can get rid of self-consciousness and others' judgement.
27
IDEATION & PROTOTYPES Prototypes in the first round Initial Idea: Tasks in the Box
Prototype1.1: Adventure Map
Prototype1.2: Cards with Triggers
Figure 1: There are different post-its with meaningful things can be done when eating alone in the box, users may pick up one of them when eating alone and follow the task on it. Figure 2: Students can pick up a paper tray mat with an adventure game of eating alone on it. They will take steps like choosing food, finding a seat and choosing what they want to do while eating.
Figure 1
Figure 2
Figure 3
Figure 3: Students can find a card on the paper mat with different small trigers such as person or plant on it. They can take photos of their food with the card and share the interesting photos they've taken.
Insights 1. Distraction helps reduce the embarrassment, but can not solve the problem thoroughly. 2. People are lack of motivation to do such things. 3. Instead of adding new elements, it’s better to use something which already exists in the context. I finally realized that there are different embarrassed moments for different people. Instead of addressing the functional problem by distraction, I need to deal with the latent emotional needs. So, I tried to ask a further "Why" question: Why students feel it embarrassed to eat alone? Because they have a stereotype of eating alone. As humans we are pack animals and we’re taught from a really young age that being alone means you are lonely. It's the instinct of social conditioning that makes us want to appear popular with lots of people. Most of those students regard being alone as a negative state and want to avoid it.
28
ANALYSIS Second Round of Analysis
Some students feel uncomfortable when eating alone. When? Students feel uncomfortable when surrounded by group-eaters or acquaintance. Why? They feel embarrassed because they assume others may make judgement on them. Why? They have a stereotype of eating alone. They regard the state of being "alone" negative and want to avoid it. How to solve it? Change their stereotype of eating alone How?
RESEARCH & SYNTHESIS Insights from desktop research 1. People feel better when someone else has the same experience with them. 2. Loneliness can become a positive experience of solitude. 3. Because everyone has moments of being alone, there’s no point in imagining that we can be immune from them. Instead, by showing that we’re able to handle the discomfort and move on, we will minimize their effects on the way others view us—and how we view ourselves. 4. Telling stories builds empathy. Storytelling is a means of breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes. (Ruth Gilligan, December 2016, Breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes through the art of story-telling) 5. Possible solutions to deal with loneliness(see in the figure below)
Design Goal & Direction My design goal is to help TU Delft students who feel embarrassed while eating alone in the canteen get relaxed and create less of a stereotype of eating alone. My design direction is storytelling about solo-eating experience and sharing.
29
30
CONCEPT
1
2
3
The concept consists of a series of food packaging with inspiring stories from solo-eaters. Also, after reading the stories, students can leave their own ideas or experience on the "story wall" at the entrance or exit of canteen.
4
5
7
6
The concept can be promoted with the cooperation with food supplier of campus canteen. The company may select some interesting stories from the wall and update the packaging. Students may collect the packaging to see more stories, from which the food company can also make more profits.
31
PROTOTYPES & INSIGHTS DURING INTERATION Initial Idea: Paper Tray Mat with Stories
Insights: The interaction needs to be longer since the eating process can last 10-15 min. The information on the food packaging need to be shown with a clearer direction.
Test 4.1 In which form should the stories be presented?
Insights: The stories can be presented by a combination of illustration and text. Use images to trigger curiosity and text to explain stories.
Test 4.2 In which style should the illustration be presented? Insights: Better to use the drawings as well as the real stories to evoke empathy, which includes enough information but not too generic nor detailed. Cartoon
Drawing
Picture
Test 4.3 How to design the stories with a clear direction on packaging so that people can read the whole story smoothly? Indicate the direction with numbers and arrows
Put parts of the story spirally on the packaging
Insights: Too much text is unreadable. The texts need to be simplified. It's necessary to design the direction which is consistent with user's cognitive behaviour so that they can read the stories intuitively.
Prototype 4.1&4.2: In which material can users discover the whole story without any problem?
paper bowl
plastic bowl
Insights: The ink is not edible, so, it can influence the evaluation in the real context. Add the stories on the packaging outside the plastic bowl so that the contents can be seen clearly through the bowl.
32
PROTOTYPES & INSIGHTS DURING INTERATION Prototype 4.3: How to design the outside appearance so that it can attract target users' attention but also they won't feel embarrassed to take one at the same time?
Prototype 4.4: Plastic bowl with special packaging
IV Characteristics: curious
Insights: It would be better to use normal cover so that people can see the food inside clearly and won’t feel embarrassed to take the food. Use color to deliver the positive emotions, which is also easier for people to notice the contents on it. To raise students' curiosity, some keywords or profile photo can be added on the outside packaging.
inspiring
accessible
relaxing
Insights: Develop the bowl into a series of food packaging to make sure that solo-eaters can get access to the product whatever food they may select. Use a logo so that people can understand the project quickly. Conclusion: Solo-eaters would feel awkward if there's a different kind of packaging for them. so, I decided to print the story on all the packages so that everyone can get them. Although some people are not the target users, it will be of added value to my target group.

Hi, I’m Lina. Let me tell you my tip for eating alone! I’m a foodie, but I wasn’t able to find friends eat with me quite frequently.
To my surprise, once I got a VIP ticket from the p latform where I posted my reviews! That was f unny but really inspired me. Since then, I started t o enjoy the moment with company of food and write down my feelings.
To avoid embarrassment, I pretended to be a reviewer, to make it more authentic, I took photos and wrote comments...
Now I work as food reviewer parttime and I a lways get invitation from many restaurants. I’m n ot afraid of eating alone anymore. So why not t ry something different when eating alone, m aybe pretend to be a reviewer like me…life is full of surprises!

EVALUATION 3 Spots: Aula, IDE Canteen, EWI Canteen 12 participants: 7 solo-eaters (5 target group), 5 group-eaters The evaluation of my final prototype consists of 2 parts: one short interview before the test and one interview plus questionnaire after the test. I want to compare my participants' feelings before and after seeing my prototypes to see whether my prototypes have achieved my design goal or not. To help participants better describe their feelings, I would use the PREMO: ask them select the pictures which can represent their feelings best and then explain the reason. PRODUCT
Introduction Children are nauty and active, they could lose their belongs from time to time. So we need to design a product that is easy to carry on, but difficult to be lost. Considered the safety and price, we decided to design a smart device that was simple and concealed to collect physical data of children. The band seems to be the best wearable device. This smart band is used to monitor the safety state of children. It monitors the child's heart rate, temperature, as well as location. What makes it different from other smart band is that it can detect and collects sensitive vocabulary around them. Considering that children are more sensitive and fond of colorful products, we have designed four different straps to increase the aesthetics and creativity of the smart band.
