‘’The Games that we want to share with the world will be games that drive progress for our communities; that bring inspiration, starting today; and that build a positive future and leave a sustainable legacy.’’ This quote from the Paris application Bid Book #3 for the 2024 Olympic Games shows the long term vision that Paris sees in the Games. The French capital city imagines the Olympic Games as not only as a means to resonate internationally, but also as a virtuous transplant of urban renewal that will grow and participate in developing the city towards a new condition. As everyone knows LA and Paris were runners up for the location in 2024, it so happened that Paris won the bid but on condition that La would be the next location after paris. Because of this history both cities are somehow linked, linked not just in a historic sense but in an urban, social one aswell. The studio in being sited in Paris will be as much about exploring new ideas that will certainly be precursers that will or could be played out in LA... and vice versa.....this is why as architects we see the studio as a testing ground for how research and creativity around this subject can and could work out in both cities.

The project, “Living Bridge�is located at Saint Denis Pleyel train station in Paris. Like other huge train stations in Paris, The Saint Denis living bridge was built as part of the Grand Paris Express project which seeks to modernize the existing transport network and create a connection between the West and East bank of the neighborhood which will transfer Saint Denis into an accessible, artistic and lively district during, and after the Olympic game. Our main focus is to combine the San Denis station, the living bridge and museum into one comprehensive structure .

The design concept delves into the reproduction of the old industrial Saint Denis. By aggregating a series of chimney shaped chunks, people might get a sense of the old industrial village, merged into an enormous, organic shaped channel that connects to the two banks. These chimney shapes were introduced at moments where there is an activity taking place inside of the bridge, and were expressed either in the form of physical differences such as an aperture or opening conditions, or an observation deck that allows people to simultaneously experience views of the Eiffel Tower and the city, and observe the interior of the museum. The relationship between the bridge and the train track, and the public and semi-public space were also being considered as significant factors.

In this project, we are speculating a brand new method of urban planning in small scale located in Hudson yard, New York city. It is a self-contained communities that are surrounded by "greenbelts", containing proportionate areas of residences, industry, and agriculture. It would become selfsufficient when it reached full population. In this project, we are trying to combine the town and country in order to provide the working class an alternative way of working in an overcrowded city. After studied some modern architecture projects, we believe that in order to create a public and healthy community in a massive structure, we need to provide exposure of building interior to the exterior, so in this project, we provide widely spaced building blocks and create large vertical space to ensure that each dwelling unit had access to sunlight, fresh air, and greenery.

To start the design concept, we first studied the new garden city proposal by Le corbusier, the Three Million city, Plan of Voisin, La Villa Radieuse and the Left Bank of the Scheldt. Among all the different types of buildings in these city plans we adopted one typology of building from each plan respectively. In order to generate a new form we use the original buildings as primitive, hybridize them into several unique building types. From the study of the new green city theory by Le corbusier and his three million city planning proposal, we discovered that in order to create a public and healthy community in a massive structure, we need to provide exposure of building both interior to the exterior, as a result, in this project we provide widely spaced building blocks and create large vertical space to ensure that each dwelling unit is able to access enough sunlight, fresh air, and greenery.

In this project we are trying to visualise a concept of sustainable environment that the community collectively own, access and manage the property. Which can prevent the accumulation of speculative investment capital and social discord resulting from conflicts of interest between landlord and residents. The economic growth would rely on each occupant becoming an entrepreneur to produce best good for the community. The goal of this economy model is to reduce class conflicts and create sustainable community economic growth. Although the project would be newly built on purchased property, they were to be publicly owned by occupant collectively, after the original capital investment was paid off, rents paid by businesses and residents were to be reinvested in local business and construction rother than going to investors.

In order to achieve the idea of green space and live & work space, we designed two main buildings branching out horizontally with the vertical sequence of cantilliver blocks and setbacks to approach the image of vertical garden city. The building can be divide into four parts: 1. Central park which provide open space and other activities for all the residents inside the building. 2. Collective garden where the gardens are collectively owned by the local community. Each family will own theirown green land. 3. Residential part for more than 500 families, Mostly are for working classes families that work for food or agricultural industry in the glass farm. 4. A glass farm includes an agriculture base which contains variety of agriculture products.Food industry and other community services serving for the entire community.

In order to highlight the different sections in the community in our powder print physical model, we use various of colors on the facade to distinguish these territories. At the bottom of the building is the glass farm which is made by crylic material.

EXCEPTIONAL VOLUMES 2GA Studio Fall 2016 Instructor: Jenny Wu

This project focusing on the architectural issues of sequence and entry, development of spatially descriptive spaces, interlocking volumes, exploited geometry, and creation of atmosphere and effect. Additionally, the project is to design a mid-rise multifunctional building, including innovative circulation, structural methods, and contemporary forms of rustication, color and material use.

Start with Austrian Postal Saving bank, This seven story, trapezium shaped building occupied an entire city block. The banking hall is the main central volume of the building located on the second level. Light is able to travel through the curved atrium ceiling and seep through the glass floor, which in turn illuminates the ground level below. Another interesting feature of the banking hall is a hidden second roof above the atrium, that when stripped of the exterior facade resembles a classic train station. This second triangular glass roof was intended to protect the curved atrium below. The prominent grid design seen on the floor of the banking hall was intentionally created to dictate the direction of movement. The rest of the building is pierced by four large courtyards and the perimeter of the remaining space is lined with banking offices.

The first being the curved atrium shape, that is exposed to the public, and the second being the protective triangular shape above it that is hidden from the public. In the first transformation the curved volume is placed in the courtyard and rotated in the direction of the exterior building, which allows the roofed framework (the transparent portion of the volume) to face outwards. This action allows light to travel outwards and above.

The transformations of the main banking hall volume are based on the geometric shapes of the courtyards. Two variations of the banking hall roof are used to create new forms.

In the next transformation the triangular volume is placed off centered in the courtyard and rotated, this allows a break in symmetry of the volume, creating new forms. In the last two transformations, the curved and triangular volumes are mirrored downwards, this action takes place due to the fact that the original banking hall has a distinct glass floor, which allows light to travel through the ceilings to the ground level of the building. Playing again off this concept of light, the volume is reflected below. The perimeter of the courtyards then shear the new forms creating new volumes.

Moving forward with the building, we maintained the idea of having a primary centralized volume, deeply embedded within our mass, that has secondary sub-volumes branching out towards the perimeter of the building. Instead of placing our sub-volumes horizontally (like the Austrian Postal Savings Bank) we chose to branch them vertically and connect all four volumes

Using different environmental studies we were able to move forward with the next step of the design and building process, which was deciding on the building envelope and facade.

Radiation study


We conducted many studies such as solar radiation, shadow, wind, and sun path, which illustrated the impact of development in terms of daylight access, passive solar design features, energy efficiency and comfort of the building, in context to the surrounding environment. What we learned about our building from these findings was that the east corner of our building was going to receive a lot of direct sunlight and the east south side of our building as well. So on these parts of our building we planned on designing smaller perforations on the facade to filter the direct sunlight coming through.

The west corner of our building was going to receive very little light and in addition a lot of wind. This confirmed to us that the west corner of our building was going to be cooler and darker. We decided then that the facade here would need more perforation for light to come through and would also need to be better insulated. In terms of materials, perforated metal panelling, insulated glazed glass, and aluminum framing for the interior skylight facade will be used to make up our envelope.

The project will contain office area for both Line naf Pace companies , auditorium for maxium 100 people and a art gallery. The Plan: Line - 1/16” Line offices have 9 floors, and the Pace Offices have 8 floors. All of the programs are organized around 3 cores. On the third floor is an auditorium (top left). Above the auditorium there is a gallery (top right). The interior of gallery is fully shaped my the exterior volume which create a dinamic interior experience of the gallery.

BIG DUMB BUILDING 2GB Studio Fall 2017 Instructor: Andrew Zago The Studio study of the relationship of architecture to urbanism and, more specifically, of the architectural artifact as urbanism. The studio project is for a very large mixed use complex in the Lincoln Heights area of Los Angeles, adjacent to the Los Angeles River, and is to be conceived in relation to the current plans for the river’s transformation. The studio’s main focus is on disciplinary questions of the relationships amongst typology, function, and form in urbanism. These questions will be considered as they relate to current issues of Los Angeles urban politics and policy, infrastructure, and large scale ecological systems.

Urbanization

Until the opening of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, the Los Angeles River was the primary water source for the Los Angeles Basin, but much of its channel had extremely low discharge except during the winter rains. Unpredictable and devastating floods continued to plague it well into the 1930s (the most notable one being the catastrophic 1938 flood that precipitated the recall of then-mayor of Los Angeles Frank L. Shaw), leading to calls for flood control measures. The Army Corps of Engineers duly began an ambitious project of completely encasing the river’s bed and banks in concrete, with only a trickle of water usually flowing down its middle. The only portions of the river that are not completely paved over are in the flood-control basin behind the Sepulveda Dam near Van Nuys; a 11-mile stretch east of Griffith Park known as the Glendale Narrows; and along its last few miles in Long Beach

Ecology

The first park along the Los Angeles River designed and built by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (SMMC), Elysian Valley Gateway Park opened in 1996. Providing access to the natural streambed portion of the river, the river’s diversity of bird life can be viewed by park users. The most promising effort underway in Los Angeles today is the transformation of the Los Angeles River into a continuous 51-mile recreational greenway. Stretching 51 miles from the confluence of Bell and Calabasas Creeks at the western end of the San Fernando Valley to the Pacific Ocean in Long Beach, the river passes through 13 cities and numerous jurisdictions. Working with these cities, community groups, public agencies, private corporations and nonprofit organizations, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority are creating a greenway composed of trails, parks, and natural lands. The greenway provides new recreational opportunities for the heavily urbanized communities surrounding the river

Jurisdiction The Los Angeles River / A River in Time The chronological development of the Los Angeles River can be divided into three critical categories: urbanization, ecology, and jurisdiction. Urbanization refers to major events which contributed to Los Angeles’ utlimate growth into a major metropolitan center, ecology focuses on significant events or policy that impacted the river’s environment, and jurisdiction denotes what entity governed significant events throughout the river’s history. 46

In 1876, the Southern Pacific opened a new depot on the current site of Los Angeles State Historic Park (the Cornfield). Railroads, as well as manufacturing operations, used the river as a dumping ground for heavy, industrial waste. Not only was the river used as a “spillover site” but the surrounding flat land provided stable ground on which to lay track. Many other newly established trans-continental railways used sites directly on the river as their primary yards on the west coast. At this time the river and its surrouding areas were highly valuable land to industrialists, in which the river’s fate was tied to that of industrial Los Angeles.

The building is sitting at the east side of LA river side, between number 5 and 110 high way. The golden line is pass through at the middle of the building. The design concept is from the original precedent Locomotiva 2, which is a threerings stacking system architecture.

Started with transforming the linear courtyard-based plan. The transformed flat courtyard was the result of the twist in the mass which is separated into horizontal and vertical courtyard that frames the city with one continuous mass. And the movement of the mass gave the ability to have circulation in the vertical courtyard. The city brought into the building by lifting the right side up to engage the mass to the city and also create an open circulation in the horizontal courtyard.

The building is consisted by three rings structure. As a result, the corridor plays a main role of building structure. There are four cores at the each turning point of the building, each core has its unique form in order to join with the interior lightly and also meet the function requrement. The project consists of five main programs including commercial area, Institutional area, office, hotel and residential area. The residential area for privacy purpose occupies the top ring. Office and hotel as semi-public space occupies the middle ring. Institutional and commercial area then set on the bot ring.

The main egress are placed at each core. Inside the building there are also egress corridors which can lead to the cloest core.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT 2GB DD Fall 2017 Instructor: Herwig Baumgartner, Scott Uriu In this course we will re-consider drawing in terms of plastic surgery and magnetic resonance imaging, where things can be hacked apart, peeled away, cut away, sliced, and exploded. Cuts will no longer be flat as in conventional plans and sections, but will be warped and active. We will attempt to combine multiple ontologies into the discussion, where things may be represented in terms of their profile, silhouette, internal organization, energy, action on other things, depletion, integration, and dis-integration all at the same time.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT CHEESE 3GA CD fall 2017 Instructor: Pavel Getov/ Kerenza Harris The course focuses on advanced methods of project delivery and construction documents incorporating digital technologies and investigating new models for linking design and construction processes. It introduces Building Information Modeling as one of the tools for realignment of the traditional relationships between the project stakeholders. Using a single unit residential building located in Los Angles, students will analyze and develop the architecture by creating a detailed 3d digital model and a set of 2d construction documents specifically tailored for the design challenges of a single unit residential project. Lectures and site visits to fabricators and construction sites will further inform students of technical documentation methods for projects that are operating on the forefront of design and construction technologies to date.
