The significance of a “Pasar” is surprisingly neglected field and slowly fading into background as new generation shy away from the daunting images of the traditional market. In the case when efficient centralised bulk purchase entity taking over the individual farmers and small family business, intricate networks of the human relationship slowly crumbling down together with the dissolution of “Pasar”.

This project “Synergizing PJ Pasar Lama” was inspired to collectively reimagine and reinvent “Pasar” as the heart of every community, examines how this large-scale, three-dimensional, inhabited medium of architecture can once again embraced within the local community, reconnect with the younger generation, strengthening the connection between people and the places they share.

Welcome to the Synergising PJ Pasar Lama 2018, a celebration of the work of the Interior Architecture Design Studio 4 (Year 2) students in the Bachelor (hons) in Interior Architecture program. This catalogue and exhibition represents the culmination of our students’ studies and offers a snapshot of the creative and technical abilities they have gained over the last one and a half years.

The Bachelor in Interior Architecture program provides a framework where the contemporary interior can be imagined, debated and tested. This is particularly true of the program where students are required to demonstrate an informed appreciation of the physical, cultural and historical contexts of interior architecture and design through the exploration of a research-led design project. The Interior is a dynamic and open-ended physical and conceptual space that considers the human scale and experiences inherent in the private and public spaces of our urban environments.

On behalf of staffs and students I would like to thank the MBPJ for their support and assistance over the course of the research and design phases of the student year. The projects demonstrate the spectrum of approaches in interior

architecture and design and our student’s capacity to respond creatively and responsibly to the challenges of contemporary practice. The breadth of projects in the exhibition is extensive and includes proposals to suggest a new interiors planning, that the traditional markets are more than a place to shop, it has to remain as a community hub to perform its social function, and a place for everyone. This program excels because of the dedication of the teaching staff that provide the intellectual and creative heart and soul of the program. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding work of the Interior Architecture teaching staff of this studio - Mr Foo Cherch Kang, and Mr. Lee Ching Hua, Angus. Congratulations to all our semester 4 (year 2) students, you have successfully completed the project. “Synergizing PJ Pasar Lama” exhibition in Pasar Besar, Jalan Othman is the sequel of our debut exhibition in Publika - “Re-Market”, to study in depth the role of interior and architecture within a community’s shared public space – the “Pasar” (wet market).

Our exhibition is not about a grand vision but taking references into collaborative process setting a platform where local council, academic community, business owner, community stakeholder all come together paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution. Interior design used as a tool to bring back the joy and pride in operating small and striving businesses, being the center of information exchange, where “secret recipe” quietly passed around to fill the aroma of many kitchen; learn a new trick or two from the seasoned shopper, or the business owner; sharing a chat and feeling right at home. More than just promoting better urban design, Placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use and bridging this century old typology into the new age. We would like to see the “Pasar” the “Place” again.

I am pleased to add a foreword to this publication, and perhaps in doing so to sketch out our first thoughts of starting this culmination of 6 months’ work encompassing academic and student of UCSI School of Architecture and Built Environment focusing on Placemaking.

Pasar “ A place of taste, A place of noise, A place of smell, A place of visual, A place of … ”

The PJ (Petaling Jaya) public market is a traditional market built in 1974. Since 1980s, PJ has experienced rapid economic growth and a process of urbanisation. As a result, this traditional market has been pushed into the gentrification frontier. Many new supermarkets that adopt cultures of retail consumerism have been built, we rarely see much consideration that is put into the rejuvenation of traditional markets. This has sped up the decline of traditional markets in PJ mainly caused by the increasing competition with supermarkets, small-chain convenience stores that largely fit the lifestyle of consumption experience amongst the working class in the modern era.

In the Studio of IA Design 4, we first question, what sorts of markets do we want?

We take the traditional market as a case study to counteract to this gentrification process, and to suggest new planning of rejuvenation, which is community-driven, people-oriented and reactive to radical interpretations of differences and pluralism.

In doing so, the studio relooked and reexamined the everyday performance of interiority in this public space. The outcome of students’ work showcased an atmospheric concept that allows the interaction between personal, social, and commercial in a public space.

Our discussion here is to bring the market design back in the limelight again, because today many of the old towns’ market are facing a new paradigm shift. The shift might not be seen very prominent now, but is taking place slowly and it is not just in its physical spatial design aspect, but also in their demand & supply chain, surrounding demography, foreign immigration as well as town gentrification issues.

This studio project tried to rethink the presently design-approach of interior designing both in industry and academia, that is ubiquitously focused on the spatial zoning arrangement, functional form-space making and monotonous material applications; this approach primarily addresses the physical human dimension that results in spatial uniformity. On the opposite, the project would like to challenge the outcome to be subjective to the neighbourhood and emotional dimension of space-making, that we shall reintroduce the sense of interiority of domestic architecture.

We hope through this exhibition it will lead us to re-evaluate our perception towards those spaces that we took for granted such as this market place.

Markets are socially constructed arenas in which provide an active public space for trade and commerce amongst competitors, suppliers and customers, under a set of formal and informal rules governed by the council or authorities. The Market (Pasar) is considered one of the earliest forms of public activities in a town. Likewise PJ Old Town Market was part of the new town estate planning in the early 1950s. Since then the Market has been serving her local community for their daily commodity & fresh food supply.

因此这些作品试图透过小空间的设计 方案/诠释,以探讨买卖与家乐、传 统与现代、私领域与公共环境之间相 互自由渗透的可能性。这些小空间的 改造是以室内设计的概念提出全新的 规划以展现传统巴刹的场所精神,既 不纯粹是个消费场所而已;我们希望 延续它做为一个社区资源的中心。

This is the project of Interior Architecture Design Studio 4 (Year 2), from School of Architecture and Built Environment, UCSI University. Pasar Besar Jalan Othman a.k.a. PJ old town market, one of the earliest traditional market in Petaling Jaya. Built in 1974, a relocation the wet-market along Jalan Othman which had been there since 1950s. In 1980s, PJ has experienced rapid economic growth and process of urbanisation, it was granted as city in 2006. In promoting the economic growth, many urban infrastructures, highrise office blocks and entertainment squares was laid, but we rarely see much inclusiveness plans to revitalise the traditional market. Another contemporary forces are the increase of supermarkets that largely fit the lifestyle of consumption experience and convenience store-chain in city neighbourhood. Contrasting to the supermarkets and convenience stores, the traditional markets is a place of social inclusion, especially those more vulnerable groups of people. Here in this type of market, they encounter many opportunities such as to buy with an

affordable price, to start-up business with low capital, to meet people and develop new friendship freely, to stroll all day without surveillance of security or CCTV. The studio took ethnography research as a method for site investigation, and amassed volumes of stories detailing how trader, customer even supplier interact each other as well as how people activity connect to the use of space. The study found this traditional market articulates the quality of a place to be experienced between work, home and leisure. The outcome showcased a conception of atmosphere that allow the interaction between personal, social, and commercial activities, and attempts to counteract with the gentrification process. Dalam mempromosikan pertumbuhan ekonomi, banyak infrastruktur bandar, blok pejabat tinggi dan dataran hiburan diperkenalkan, tetapi kami jarang melihat banyak rancangan yang berkaitan untuk memulihkan pasaran tradisional. Satu lagi kuasa kontemporari ialah peningkatan pasar raya yang sebahagian besarnya sememangnya sesuai dengan gaya hidup pengalaman penggunaan dan rantaian kedai di kawasan bandar.

Reka Bentuk Interior Senibina Studio 4 ini mengambil penyelidikan etnografi sebagai kaedah untuk penganalisaan tapak, dan mengumpulkan sejumlah maklumat yang perinci bagaimana pedagang, pelanggan bahkan pembekal berinteraksi antara satu sama lain serta bagaimana aktiviti manusia dikaitkan kepada penggunaan ruang. Kajian mendapati pasar tradisional ini mengundang kualiti tempat dan suasana antara kerja, rumah dan masa lapang.

Pasar Besar Jalan Othman a.k.a PJ pasar bandar lama, salah satu pasar tradisional terawal di Petaling Jaya. Ia dibina pada tahun 1974, penempatan semula pasar basah di sepanjang Jalan Othman yang telah ada sejak 1950-an. Pada tahun 1980-an, PJ telah mengalami pertumbuhan ekonomi yang pesat dan proses urbanisasi dan ia telah diberikan sebagai bandar pada tahun 2006.

Majlis Perbandaran Petaling Jaya (MPPJ) established on 1974. At the same year, the Old PJ Market was demolished for development and PJ Old Town Market was built for the hawkers. Currently, locals call it ‘Pasar Lama’.

As the city develops, shopping malls and hypermarkets raised and played a crucial role in market business.

20th June 2006, Petaling Jaya was granted city status. Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) was established as the city council of the city.

Most traditional market businesses are destined to be terminated due to younger generations in the family being reluctant to take over the business, the same goes to The Egg Lodge in PJ old town market. This design strategy is proposed to rejuvenate the existing egg’s business by altering the business according to the heir’s interest, that is inject the concept of experience the business by provide eatery corner, kiosk and vending machines to promote business to young customer through its new identity.

Ah Pin Biscuit is the only store selling biscuit in the PJ old town market. Nowadays young customers are brand infatuation and appearance. Spices give a sense of belonging, especially the taste of food will encourage you to recall your food, family memories and past. My design strategy is to create a contemporary, clean business spaces for spice shop in term of its sufficient of product display as well as the storage system. Tong Ah Medical Hall is a Chinese medicine and herb store. The current layout is in traditional way of display appearance. I expand the store with two levels of flexible storage system come with elderly friendly ladder. To attract the young generation visit to this traditional incense store, a bundle set of ritual product in new packaging according to Chinese lunar calendar festival, and new range of incense medicine or perfume burner collection to be featured as part of new product range. A new zone will be specially designed for this two new additional product.
