the Cancer Center’s Geaux Free program offers the best possible chance for success. Mills-Foster, a 30-year pack-a-day smoker, signed up for Geaux Free because of health concerns. “I tried the patch, the gum and going cold turkey, but I always went back,” she said.

Ordoyne started chewing tobacco at 18 and switched to cigarettes 42 years ago. “It was nothing for me to smoke a pack before lunch and another pack in the afternoon, maybe two,” he said. By practicing techniques learned in class, he has completely broken his dependence on nicotine. “Offering the class at noon, with food and in a casual environment, made it

very appealing to me,” stated Mills-Foster, who finished the program because of the friends she made there. “I got a twofer,” she said. “I quit smoking and made new friends.” Ordoyne believes the support of a group setting provides an extra incentive to succeed. Catching It Early Kevin Thompson was smart to listen to his mother’s advice. A retired nurse who worked at TGMC, she has always

Enhancing Survivorship Throughout her treatment for Stage IV lung cancer, Robin Smith has taken advantage of many Cancer Center support services,

The Hebert Family

“It is extremely important to us, as a family, to give to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC. Having a comprehensive cancer center in Houma allows families from here and surrounding parishes the opportunity to get the best care locally. We can‘t think of a better gift than giving back to our Cancer Center so they can continue to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer.” – T H E H E B E R T F A M I LY

Brian Hebert, CFO of Morris P Hebert, Inc., and his wife, Katie, have been loyal supporters of the Cancer Center for the past two years. Support from organizations and individuals like the Hebert family allows for patients to receive the most advanced cancer treatment and care while remaining at home, surrounded by family and friends. Katie is undergoing treatment for brain cancer at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC and is able to spend more time with her family while still receiving the highest quality, compassionate care. During 2014, Terrebonne General Medical Center (TGMC) celebrated a remarkable milestone: 60 years of service to southeast Louisiana. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has partnered with TGMC for the last seven years, a combination that has enhanced cancer care, allowing patients to receive the highest quality treatments and support services in their hometown. “From the outset, TGMC’s vision and community focus was a perfect fit for Mary Bird Perkins’ mission, allowing the partnership to expand programs and services to meet a vital need for the people of Terrebonne Parish and adjoining communities — local access to high-quality, comprehensive cancer care,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. The doors to the newly constructed Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC opened in October 2011. “The vision for the new center was to provide the very best in cancer treatment and demonstrate our commitment to creating a healthier community,” explained Phyllis Peoples, president and CEO of TGMC. “We built the comprehensive cancer center for our community, our friends, family and anyone in need of the resources, tools and expertise to defeat cancer.” The partnership has provided an opportunity to enhance the patient experience by offering streamlined and coordinated care all in one modern facility. “With the leadership of TGMC and our physician partners, donors, volunteers and staff members, we were able to accomplish many important goals in 2014,” stated Stevens. “We look forward to the continued expansion of the Cancer Center’s mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through collaboration.” 20
