For the Space Fans

Any space fans? Or fellow astrophiles (definition: the one who loves stars and astronomy)? I love anything space-related so will be heading over to the RAF Museum for their Jet & Space Week. Its star attraction is likely to be the Planetarium. The RAF Museum has partnered up with Space Odyssey who will be bringing along their Galileo Dome. Once inside, it is a live and interactive experience that will educate and entertain visitors of all ages on the wonders of all things interstellar. Cue the Interstellar theme tune.

Squashed Pickle’s Autumn Baking Adventures

Easy Pesto Puff Loaf

Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t bake! To be honest I’m the worst baker ever, but I can make a mean pesto puff loaf! So easy and, honestly, let the kids make it! Perfect for dinner parties and a great addition to lunchboxes...so yummy cold too!

Ingredients

• Sheet of ready roll puff pastry

• 3 tbsp of pesto

• Grated cheddar cheese

• Egg yolk

• Sesame seeds (optional)

Method

1. Start by unrolling your pastry.

2. Slice into 3 equal thick strips.

3. Now spread a tablespoon of pesto down each strip; top with grated cheddar.

4. Fold the edges of each strip to the centre to cover the pesto and cheese. You will now have 3 sausage shaped pastries.

5. On a lined baking tray join the tops of the 3 strips and braid down to the bottom and and pinch.

6. Now brush with whisked egg yolk to get a golden crust!

7. Sprinkle with sesame and bake in a hot oven at 180C for 20 mins!

3 Ingredient Blueberry Cookies

These are so yummy and perfect for all ages. Only 3 ingredients and no added eggs or sugar! The ripe banana sweetens this cookie just right. Try making these with the kids..so much fun!

Ingredients

• 1 medium ripe banana

• 70g instant oats

• Handful of blueberries

• Honey (if you like them sweeter)

Method

1. Start by mashing your banana really well.

2. Add sliced blueberries and fold in so everything is combined.

3. Now add your oats and really mix this well. You will get a thick batter.

4. Make 6 balls out of the mix and place on a lined baking tray.

5. Flatten each ball and bake in a hot oven at 180C for 15 mins.

6. Let cool and serve!

8. Slice and enjoy!

Rainbow Veggie Slices

Here’s a really simple and yummy recipe that’s great for baby led weaning to toddlers. These are perfect for little hands and make great additions to lunchboxes. You can serve them warm or cold.

Ingredients

• Few broccoli florets

• 1 small sweet potato

• 3 eggs

• Handful of cheddar cheese

• Handful of oats

Method

1. Start by grating your sweet potato, cheese and broccoli and set aside.

2. In a bowl add all the ingredients and mix well.

3. Take a small baking tray lined with baking paper and spoon your mix in.

4. Smooth it out so it’s all even.

5. Place in a hot oven at 180C for around 25 mins until it’s golden and cooked through.

6. When removing, take out the whole baking paper and flip over. Peel paper off and slice into small bars so they are easy to hold.

7. Enjoy!

Broccoli & Boursin

Pinwheels

I had scraps of puff pastry in my fridge so decided to use them up by making these delish pinwheels! A yummy hidden veg and a snack perfect for adults and kids! These make great addition to alunchboxes. You have to try this!

Ingredients

• Boursin (half a pot)

• Puff pastry (I had around half a pack)

• 3/4 broccoli florets

• Egg (wash)

Method

1. Start by steaming your broccoli till it’s soft, mash it up and add the Boursin.

2. Mix well into a smooth paste.

3. Lay out your puff pastry on a well floured surface (mine was scraps so I stuck bits together).

4. Spread the mix all over the puff pastry and roll into a large sausage.

5. Cut into 2cm circles and lay on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

6. Brush beaten egg all over the pinwheels and bake in a hot oven at 180C for 15 mins till the pastry is golden and crisp.

7. Enjoy hot or cold!

Nurturing Girls’ Excellence

Palmers Green High School (PGHS) is an academically selective all-girls school, where pupils are challenged to realise their educational goals whilst still being able to be their own true authentic selves.

Our Senior Department educates girls in years 7-11. The pastoral and academic support we provide enables pupils to reach their full potential and we are proud of the fantastic GCSE results we achieve each year.

Our pupils benefit from small class sizes throughout. In the Senior School, teaching groups are usually between 12-16 pupils, and often lower for the crucial GCSE years. Our teachers have significantly more time to give feedback, support and extension to all.

Students also have greater access to the many opportunities beyond the classroom, such as participating in a school musical production, sports team or chess tournament. Our vibrant extra-curricular programme aims to

develop confidence and resilience. We also offer a rich calendar of day and residential visits, field trips and expeditions in the UK and abroad.

11+ Assessments needn’t be testing

Unlike many independent schools, we are not looking for the finished product. At PGHS we look for potential and many ask: ‘how do we assess for that at 11+ entry into our Senior School?’

We use the ISEB Common Pre-test. This is a series of online adaptive tests that are based on the Year 6 curriculum. All are multiple choice and cover English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal questions. There is no need to prepare for the assessment beyond looking at the familiarisation materials on their website. We also include a traditional pen-and-paper creative writing task, giving pupils the opportunity to express themselves and show off their writing skills.

We do everything we can to ensure that the 11+ Assessment Day is not stressful for our candidates (they always enjoy our delicious biscuits!). Those who have shown potential across the assessments will come in for an interview with the Head. This is a real chance to show us who they are, where their passions lie and demonstrate why they would be an asset to PGHS.

We hold our Year 7 entry day early in November. Our aim is for the pupils to have completed the process before the Christmas holidays so that they can then relax and enjoy their exciting final year of primary school.

We’ve all seen the films: robots, computers, even hard drives becoming sentient and taking over the world. Now while that might all be science fiction, the world of today has had to get used to the exponential growth of artificial intelligence. And there’s no getting around it: AI is here to stay. Its rapidly evolving capabilities have been placed at the forefront of discussions for businesses around the world, so it’s no surprise that the heavily regulated education sector is bracing itself for some big potential changes. The introduction of AI technology and its easy accessibility to children has caused many to question how we can maintain the integrity of their education, and even whether AI will one day replace the need for certain industries altogether.

Frank Milner, Global President of Tutor Doctor, discusses how AI and ChatGPT can actually be used to augment and enrich learning, and provide children, tutors and parents with new tools to help to set them up for success in the future.

ChatGPT, in its own words, is an artificial intelligence language model designed to generate human-like text based on the input it is given. It can answer questions, write essays, summarise text, translate languages, and even create poetry or write a story. However, the key here is the

‘human-like’ element: ChatGPT is unable to form beliefs or opinions, or to have emotions or even consciousness, so it still requires human input in order to be used effectively.

While there is an understandable concern that ChatGPT can cause children to become lazier or less original, and potentially impact their learning, there are also many benefits to using AI in the classroom to engage pupils, as long as the use is monitored and demonstrated well by educators. If ChatGPT is incorporated into lesson plans, children can see how to effectively use ChatGPT to enhance and strengthen their education as opposed to using it as a quick and easy, full solution.

Here at Tutor Doctor, we believe the impact of ChatGPT on education will depend on how it is implemented and used. Not allowing any use of AI will often have the opposite intended effect; pupils will turn to it and use it for its most basic functions, without taking the time to learn how it can supplement their work as opposed to giving them an easy way out. While it has the potential to improve the learning experience, it is important to consider both the positive and negative effects to ensure that it is being used in a way that supports learning and development and doesn’t hinder or replace it.

How can ChatGPT positively affect learning for children?

• Increased engagement: ChatGPT can help children engage with learning material in new ways.

Example: a chatbot can ask questions and provide feedback, which can help children to stay engaged and motivated.

• Improved accessibility: ChatGPT can help make education more accessible to children with disabilities.

Example: a chatbot can provide text-tospeech capabilities for students who have difficulty reading, or it can translate text into language they may be more comfortable working with.

• Personalised learning: ChatGPT can help personalise the learning experience for children.

Example: a chatbot can recommend resources or provide feedback based on a child’s interests and learning style. Children can tailor questions to their interests and even ask follow-up questions so ChatGPT will delve deeper into that interest.

• Enhanced creativity: ChatGPT can help spark children’s creativity by offering new ideas and perspectives on a syllabus.

Example: a chatbot can suggest new topics to explore or offer creative prompts. It can

help to spark their creativity and keep them engaged when learning writing skills. Try getting ChatGPT to give your child a prompt to write a story or a poem, and then work together to write it.

• Fast access to information: ChatGPT provides a wide range of topics in real time. Think of it as a more in-depth Google search. With a quick search through its database, ChatGPT allows teachers to have a well of information at their fingertips.

Example: if children have questions we may not know the answers to, ChatGPT can allow us to provide the answer quickly, provided we fact-check thoroughly.

• Easy quizzing: we know that children are inquisitive and love to ask questions, but sometimes coming up with the answers can be time-consuming. Testing their knowledge and keeping them entertained isn’t an easy combination, but ChatGPT can create fun quizzes for children of any age.

Example: ChatGPT can quickly create fun quizzes and puzzles to keep children occupied and keep them learning, saving teachers and parents lots of time. It also allows for independent study, should an older student want to use this technology when revising for exams.

• Future-proofing: AI will be around for a while and will only become more prevalent, so setting children up with the knowledge of how to properly use it will be beneficial in the long run.

Example: create a lesson plan asking children to create prompts for ChatGPT (silly or serious!) and get them to read out and evaluate the results as this will teach them to be clear, concise, and specific when using AI.

What are the potential negative effects of AI in the classroom?

As with any new technology, there are going to be drawbacks, or ways in which the technology can be exploited to allow people a quick, easy solution. This doesn’t mean the technology shouldn’t be used, however; there are ways to mitigate the negative effects this kind of technology can have.

• Academic dishonesty and lack of original thought: there’s no shying away from the fact that AI is an easy way to avoid work or to cheat, which can negatively impact academic performance and undermine the learning process. This

is one of the most significant concerns surrounding ChatGPT, and plagiarism checkers are scrambling to catch up with such modern technology. Solution: teach children the correct way to use AI to enhance education, and regularly check for plagiarism in work. Monitor ChatGPT usage and encourage parents to do the same.

Solution: encourage limited usage of ChatGPT. Include it in the syllabus, but stress that it is only to be used in the way teachers demonstrate, and ensure parents do the same.

• Privacy concerns: ChatGPT may collect data on children’s interactions with the technology, which can raise privacy concerns for some children and their families.

Solution: monitor usage of ChatGPT regularly and educate children on internet safety and privacy.

• Unequal access: if some children do not have access to the technology required to use ChatGPT, it can create inequalities in the classroom. This may include access to devices, internet connectivity, or other resources.

Solution: if possible, only use ChatGPT on education devices, and do not encourage its use at home.

• Accuracy limitations: ChatGPT is not 100% accurate because its data is pulled from the internet, and it stopped learning new information in September 2021. The technology is intelligent but not fully human, meaning it can misunderstand context leading to incorrect outputs.

Solution: use the accuracy limitations as an educational opportunity. Prepare an exercise where children have to fact-check outputs against their own research and show them the inaccuracies which arise. This can be a very fun and silly exercise to do!

• Loss of writing skills: if children rely too heavily on ChatGPT, they may not develop the skills and abilities necessary to write creatively and effectively. They may struggle to craft original ideas or arguments and may rely on the chatbot to do the work for them.

Solution: show children how effective ChatGPT is at enhancing ideas and encouraging creativity, but also show the limitations and the consequences of relying on ChatGPT.

Ducky Zebra

Sally Dear is the founder of kids’ clothing brand Ducky Zebra. Here she tells us more about her mission to create a gender-neutral, sustainable business.

Tell us where the idea for Ducky Zebra came from.

I’m a parent of two and was shocked when my daughter, at the age of 4, mentioned she couldn’t be a taxi driver when she was older because she was a girl. We’d always tried hard to avoid stereotypes in our household. With her comment came the realisation we weren’t her only influence. She was affected by the people she saw, the books she read, the TV she watched, the games she played and the clothes she wore. Whether we liked it or not, she was surrounded by a world of pinks, pastels and cute-pretty images.

After research I discovered that stereotypes in early years can go on to affect children’s choices and decisions later in life, including subject choices, career paths, mental health and behaviour. And so I decided to do something about it. I wanted to create clothes for my daughter, and other girls, that inspired confidence and determination to achieve whatever they wanted.

Ever the optimist, I quit my job and began the process. Only to find that things were equally bad for boys. Perhaps even worse. Dull, boring colours, aggressive teethbaring predators, messages of heroism and dominance. There was little reference to kindness. I didn’t want my son to grow up displaying these aggressive characteristics.

And so I changed direction, and began to look at clothes that would benefit girls and boys equally.

Developing Ducky Zebra has been a huge learning curve. I’ve discovered so much about fabrics, dyes and how to manufacture more sustainably. The more I’ve learnt, the more I’ve become determined to create clothes that are kind to the planet and kind to the people that make them. From the get-go we’ve used GOTS certified organic cotton to reduce our impact, and have slow, sustainable fashion as one of our core, guiding values.

Why was it important for you to create a gender-neutral brand?

Step into the children’s section of a clothes shop and you’ll soon see the divide in messaging. ‘Smile’ and ‘joy’ on one side and ‘be the future’ and ‘in it to win it’ on the other. For one-half of the population, there’s a focus on looks, beauty and kindnessand for the other half, there’s a focus on dominance, action and confidence.

The difference in size, fit, typeface and messaging is so subtle we don’t always spot it. For instance, clothes intended for girls often have unrealistic or make-believe characters: fairies, unicorns and cutelooking animals with long eyelashes, while

boys have fact-filled tops with a realistic depiction. Not only do they give different messages, but they also spark a very different type of conversation between the child and an adult.

By creating gender-neutral clothes we avoid these limiting stereotypes. All of our clothes celebrate kindness and confidence equally for all children - because we believe every child has the ability to be both.

Our long-term vision is to spark change within the industry. We want to inspire other brands to remove the pink vs blue, kind vs confident and sweet vs heroic stereotypes we so often see and wear from birth.

Sustainability and slow fashion are key parts of your brand - why was that important for you?

During my early research I discovered the fashion industry is one of the highest polluting sectors. It accounts for around 10% of global carbon emissions, and nearly 20% of wastewater. In order to maintain a high production pace and low costs, fastfashion brands often cut corners, resulting in lower quality clothes with a greater environmental impact, and dangerous working conditions with a lower pay.

notoriously complex, which means we - the end-customer - often don’t know where and how our clothes have been made.

I wanted to do things better - and kinder. And so at Ducky Zebra we’re committed to working sustainably, ethically and transparently. We’ve carefully selected a manufacturing partner whose values are aligned with our own. All of our clothes are made from GOTS organic cotton, which helps to reduce their environmental impact. No harmful chemicals are used in the growing of organic cotton, and it emits up to 46% less greenhouse gases than nonorganic.

Rather than adopting the latest trends or seasonal gimmicks, we create small volumes of high-quality clothes that can be reused regardless of the season or gender. Plus our sizing is generous, with features like turn-up cuffs to increase longevity.

Our pre-loved programme encourages customers to return their old Ducky Zebra clothes to us. We then pass them on to the Oxford Baby Bank for reuse. And we’ve more recently partnered with Borro and thelittleloop to allow customers to rent our clothes in the UK and with My Little Wardrobe in Ireland. This further helps to increase the lifecycle of our clothes and also makes them more accessible to more people.

What have been some highlights of running your own business?

I love the freedom and creativity of running my own business; there are so many highlights! Some might seem small to others, but big to me. Spotting a child wearing our Ducky Zebra clothes when out and about, for instance, always makes me smile.

Being stocked by Blenheim Palace, poppingup in John Lewis, managing some fantastic photoshoots and partnering with Lifting Limits and not only pink and blue to increase awareness of stereotypes in early years have all been amazing moments.

But, and I know it sounds cliche, my biggest highlight has to be the reviews, feedback and direct conversations I have with customers. Discovering that an expectant parent has bought their very first item of baby clothing from Ducky Zebra because of our values, or that a grandma repeatedly buys from us because her granddaughter, who uses a wheelchair, finds them so comfy make all of the hard work worthwhile.

And what do you think is the hardest thing?

For me, the hardest thing is prioritisation. I have so many plans and ideas for Ducky

Zebra, but as a small, self-funded business I simply can’t do them all straight away. I find prioritisation (and being realistic with my time) a constant challenge - as there are so many varied day-to-day tasks, from finance and accounting through to design, product development and marketing. Plus, there are definitely some tasks that I prefer more than others!

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who want to start their own business?

After a year of running Ducky Zebra, and feeling close to burn-out, I received some amazing advice from Joey Clifton, a coach for purpose-led professionals. She encouraged me to identify just 5 goals for the year ahead. It sounds so simple, and yet was so effective. I’d love to pass her advice on to others. It allows you to focus on what is important, set exciting goals for the year, and realise that you don’t have to do everything right away.

The other advice I’d give is to find people who are at a similar stage in their business journey to you. It can often feel lonely starting and running your own businessand so having this network of people who ‘get it’ can be really helpful and inspiring. Finally, believe in yourself and just do it!

One Pot Paprika Rice with Prawns

Tasty, easy and balanced. What more could you ask for from a weekday dinner?

Ingredients

Serves 6

• 2 cups long grain rice

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 1 tbsp grated garlic

• 1 ½ tbsp paprika

• 3 cups hot vegetable stock

• 1 cup defrosted peas

• 1 cup defrosted sweetcorn

• King prawns

• Salt and pepper

• Parsley to garnish

• Lemon to serve

Method

1. Pour the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the rice, garlic and paprika and cook for about two minutes till well combined.

2. Add the vegetables and gently mix through to heat them up a little.

3. Add the hot stock, season well with salt and pepper and mix. Bring to a gentle

simmer, cover and cook for 10 minutes.

4. Uncover, mix gently and add the prawns. Nestle some into the rice and leave some on top.

5. Cover again and cook for another 5 to 7 minutes or till the prawns are cooked through and the rice is tender. When it’s cooked, turn off the heat and let it sit for five minutes.

6. Garnish with parsley and serve with lemon wedges.

Yiouvetsi

A delicious traditional Greek pasta dish that is definitely a family favourite. I like to use beef mince, but you can also use pork. I also add grated carrots for an extra veggie boost which is definitely not traditional but so good. And as if I needed any more reasons to love it, it’s all made in one dish.

Ingredients

• 1 ½ cups orzo pasta

• 500 gr. (1 lb) ground beef 5% fat

• 3 ½ cups hot vegetable stock (or 2 cubes dissolved in water)

• 1 large carrot, grated

• 1 red pepper, cut into small pieces

• 4 tbsp olive oil

• 2 cloves of minced garlic

• 400 gr. (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

• ½ tsp ground cinnamon

• 1 cinnamon stick

• 2 bay leaves

• Salt and pepper

• Halloumi or anari to serve

Method

1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium to high heat and add the beef mince. Cook it for a few minutes, till brown all over and no pink pieces remain

2. Once the meat has cooked and all liquid has evaporated, add the onion, carrots and pepper.

3. Add the garlic and cinnamon and mix well

4. Add the orzo and cook for a couple of minutes

5. Add the canned tomatoes, stir and then add the hot stock. Season well.

6. Bring to a boil and let it cook for a few minutes, making sure you stir regularly. Lower the heat a little and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated (around 15 minutes).

7. Turn off the heat, cover the pot with a kitchen towel and lid for 5 minutes

8. Give it a mix, taste for seasoning and serve with some freshly grated halloumi or anari cheese

Cherry Muffins

Sweet juicy cherries in light vanilla sponge, the perfect treat with a cup of tea! I usually include almond extract which works so well with cherries and gives these muffins a Bakewell tart flavour. But if you’re not a fan of that flavour, you can absolutely leave out the almond extract.

Ingredients

Makes 12

• 1 ½ cups plain flour

• 2 tsp baking powder

• ½ tsp salt

• ⅓ cup granulated sugar (make it ½ cup if you prefer things a little sweeter)

• ⅓ cup olive oil

• ⅓ cup full fat milk (can sub for oat milk)

• 1 large egg at room temperature

• 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

• ¼ tsp almond extract (optional)

• 1 ¾ cup fresh cherries, pitted and cut in half

• 2 tbsp flaked almonds

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200C / 390F and put muffin cases in a baking tray.

2. In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt

3. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, oil, milk, egg, and vanilla extract. If using add the almond extract too.

4. Add the dry ingredients to wet ones and whisk until combined. Do not overmix

5. Gently fold in the cherries.

6. Divide the batter between the muffin cups

7. Sprinkle with the almonds.

8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the muffins are done Check by inserting a sharp knife. If it comes out clean, they’re ready.

9. Allow the muffins to cool on a wire rack and enjoy!

Lessons I’m Learning While Considering Relocation

A few weeks ago I spent 5 days in Portugal, staying with friends who have just moved there and, based on the increase we’re seeing in people considering moving abroad, I thought I’d share a bit about my experience there.

The more flexible our jobs become, the more we are all starting to question our unconscious decisions to live where we’ve always lived. Because we do have more options now than we did years ago when most people’s jobs meant living where their jobs were based, I’m seeing a huge increase in people who are starting to question if indeed where they have always been is where they’re meant to be, and if perhaps there are better options for their children elsewhere.

Many people I know are looking for

more conscious, holistic alternatives to mainstream education, as well as more sunshine, and cheaper property prices, and these were a handful of the reasons our friends took the plunge.

These friends told us a few years ago about how I could use my Moroccan Jewish ancestry to get Portuguese citizenship. As we were in the thick of the Covid madness at the time, it seemed like a really good opportunity to once again have access to movement within the EU, so we did it, and I’m now, believe it or not, a Portuguese citizen - having never stepped foot there until this trip!

As it so happens, though my dad is from Morocco, my mum’s ancestors are from Portugal, so perhaps it all felt a bit like Divine guidance.

As soon as our friends told us about their plans, we became interested. We’d always considered the fact that we probably won’t stay in the UK forever, but had never considered Portugal.

They were making this move with 3 things in mind that they wanted to improve on from their lives here in the UK:

• Community

• Weather

• Cheap land, meaning you can buy more and live far closer to nature

Once they moved, I decided I wanted to go out there to scope it out for myself.

I wanted to observe what it would be like to actually live there - no rose-tinted glasses, but a real, authentic view on what life is

like when you move to the mountains in Portugal: what it’s like in the winter, what the holistic schooling options are actually like and whether people are happy with them, whether the children themselves are happy with their new lives.

The most important aspect (for me) that I witnessed when I was there, was the way in which they’ve cultivated community. A world where your neighbour is your best friend, children in the community grow up like cousins, and people don’t have to schedule you in 3 months in advance is how I grew up in Israel, and what I miss so much living in London, where, regardless of how wonderful your community is, seems a lot harder to achieve here.

If anything other than the weather made me move, it would be this level of community. My work is all about bringing people togethercultivating community and offering women communion with other women in order to thrive as their best selves. We do this best when around other women raising children holistically.

I made many other observations, and took away many lessons, over my 5 days there. Here are some of them in a nutshell:

• Community shouldn’t be something you fight or strive to create; in the right place, the seed is sown, and it grows without too much effort

• You don’t need everything to be perfect in order to make big life changes - nothing needs to be forever

• You also don’t need as much money as you think. Many people have managed on very little, and opportunities you never even thought about open up

• Your skills are valuable wherever you go - and we all have innate gifts to offer

• Friends who feel like family will find you wherever you are in the world

• The more I step into my role as the Divine Mother Archetype - embracing this role above all else and making decisions from that place - not only does the pressure of the “girl boss” role melt away with ease, but wealth also flows in with ease. For a few years now (perhaps since I stopped breastfeeding) I’ve been in masculine business-building mode, but right now I’m very much in the energy of wanting to be back in the Mother Archetype role, back in the home, back to nourishing my family, knowing that the frequency at which I choose to vibrate enables me to prosper financially regardless

when you’re energetically open and aligned with them

• Kids are better outdoors. Period. Kids running around barefoot, climbing, jumping, playing, are by far happier - in a true sense of the meaning - than kids spending a lot of time indoors and on screens (also, they sleep better. I need this)

• Life is full of the most bizarre and wonderful opportunities and possibilities, if only we open ourselves up to flow and surrender

• As an entrepreneur, I can run my business from absolutely anywhere, and I love the freedom that that offers me, and it gives me even more incentive to support more and more women on their entrepreneurial journeys

• The grass isn’t always greener. The older I get, the less idealistic I become about things I used to think were “better”. There are positives and negatives to every choice we make, it just comes down to what suits us better, based on the place in life we’re in at that moment

Those are my musings that I journaled on while I was there.

We have no idea what the future holds and if we’ll ever move there - though my business is portable, my husband’s isn’t, so we’re here for now. But I have to say, it’s given me a bit of peace to know that I can accept where I am right now, that no move or “dream” is ever perfect, that we are so fortunate to have all we have herea home, our health, our businesses, friends and family - and when the time is right, we’ll figure it out.

• From this place, the most beautiful manifestations really do take place - no resistance, just trust and flow

• Life can be both slow AND exciting at the same time

• You don’t chase dreams, they find you

The impact of divorce can have a ripple effect across almost every aspect of a person’s life - from where they’re living and the state of their finances, to their relationships with wider family and friends.  But when a separating couple are parents, often the thing they’re most concerned about is how their divorce will affect their children.

What does it mean for a child when their parents separate?

Most parents are acutely aware of the practical impact divorce will have on the lives of their children.  It usually means at least one (but often two) new homes for children to get used to and - for most children - seeing each of their parents less often than they did when the family lived together.

The emotional impact can be less obvious and immediate.  But, the encouraging news is that there’s now a body of research about this very issue and the steps that separating parents can take to support their children.

An important takeaway is that while parental separation itself is stressful for children, it doesn’t have to be harmful to them.  What matters is how the conflict is managed by the adults and the support that the child is given.

There are some key and simple foundations that can be put in place to support children through their parents’ divorce and beyond.

Foundation 1: Keep conflict to a minimum.

For many, the thought of having a conflictfree relationship with their ex sounds utterly unrealistic - and to be frank, that’s a fair assessment.  However, making sure that disagreements don’t happen in front of the children is a sensible approach.

In the presence of children, it’s best to adopt a stance of constructive co-operation as far as possible. Victoria Nottage, Co-

Supporting Children Through Divorce

Founder of SeparateSpace, lawyer and mediator explains that “If you feel you’re getting forced into a conflict conversation with your ex in front of your children, you might want to use phrases like, ‘I don’t know about that yet. I want to think about it first and I’ll come back to you’ or ‘Let’s calm this down, or we’ll need to pause this conversation and come back to it later.’  Communicate as clearly and politely as you can - think about how you’d talk to a colleague at work and try to channel that.”

Foundation 2: Make sure your child has a trusted adult they can talk to. Children of separated parents do better if they can talk to a trusted adult. Parents often think their children will talk to them or another family member about any difficult feelings.  But the parents are in the thick of it.  Other family members - such as grandparents - might be too involved or invested in the divorce by the very fact they’re related to one of the parents.

For many children, a better option is an adult at school - they are neutral and have no emotional involvement.  It doesn’t have to be a class teacher - it could be a subject teacher, a teaching assistant or a coach from the after-school club.

Dr Ellen Shumka, Educational Psychologist and Child Specialist at SeparateSpace explains, “If you’re separating (or separated) but aren’t sure about who your child’s trusted adult might be, then I suggest you start a conversation about it.  Your child (and their school) may have an idea who that trusted adult is for them, even if you don’t.”

Foundation 3: Don’t put your child in the position of having to ‘take a side’ or be a source of emotional support.

If there is ongoing and intense conflict, children are more likely to feel as though they need to ‘take a side’ and be relied upon as a source of support for parents and/or other children in the family.

Dr Shumka is reassuring: “If you think your child might already feel like they’re on ‘a side’ there are steps you can take to help to ease that feeling.  Start today by committing to yourself that you won’t complain about your ex in front of your child.”

She adds that, “It’s important your child is explicitly told that the divorce isn’t their fault and it’s also far better if they don’t view it as one parent’s fault.  Find a phrase you’re comfortable with and be ready to repeat it - something like: ‘The divorce is an adult decision and it’s not your fault” or “This is a decision that Dad and I have taken, it’s not your decision and it’s not because of you.’”

But also look after yourself and remember that your child doesn’t need perfection.

Of course the three foundations explained here give rise to some practical actions that you can try to adopt.  But, before parents berate themselves about all the times they haven’t been able to get it quite right, it’s worth remembering the helpful phrasegood enough parenting is good enough.

Children are fine when their parents don’t meet standards of perfection.  If situations aren’t managed as well as they could have been, the next best thing is to acknowledge and repair.  Journeying in the general direction suggested above, with a child’s best interests at heart, will make a difference.

EFT Tapping Transformed My Life In Every Way

I came across Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) over seven years ago, at a time of deep personal loss and grief after we lost our daughter Alice after birth. Pregnant again eight months later, I was suffering from undiagnosed severe PTSD. I needed something that was going to be effective and fast, as I was starting to panic about giving birth again.

EFT landed in my life via my sister who suggested it as we discussed PTSD one day and a few days later I had my first session. This first session was absolutely life changing. Not only did it stop my flashbacks in their tracks, I started to feel hopeful because I knew deep down I’d found a tool that works. I knew I could get through my upcoming second birth because I had the support of an incredible practitioner that made me feel so held, and I knew I could use the tool myself whenever I needed. In short, I felt empowered.

What is EFT Tapping?

EFT tapping involves tapping on specific points on the body while focusing on a negative emotion or feeling. This is the ultimate brain hack, because tapping on these specific points sends signals to the amygdala in the brain, which switches off the Fight, Flight, Freeze response and reduces the production of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. EFT Tapping has been proven to reduce cortisol by 43%, as stated by Dr. Peta Stapleton in March 2020.

This technique alone can be a powerful tool for reducing common emotions that arise in parenthood such as anger, grief, frustration, anxiety, overwhelm, loneliness, and more. You can manage these everyday emotions yourself once you get the hang of the technique. By revisiting these events in a safe and held way, EFT Tapping dissolves the negative emotions and beliefs that were created at that time and the person is free to create a new positive thought and subsequently a new reality for themselves. The beauty of this technique is that once the energy is cleared, it’s gone. You don’t need to keep coming back to revisit these events. This tool gives long-lasting effective release from pain, emotional blocks and deep trauma.

How Does Tapping Work?

Tapping works by combining the principles of psychology, mindfulness, and acupressure. It is often compared to acupuncture without needles, as it focuses on key points or acupoints on the body. Tapping brings a calming effect on the amygdala (the stress centre of the brain) and the hippocampus (the brain’s memory

centre), both of which play a role in the decision-making process to determine if something is, or isn’t, a threat, and in the fight or flight response.

EFT also has a calming effect on cortisol –the stress hormone. High cortisol levels can be caused by a variety of things, including biological stressors, and mood disorders such as depression and anxiety and psychological stress. Too much cortisol and adrenaline in the body can lead to burnout, insomnia, and chronic illness.

The Benefits of EFT Tapping

EFT tapping has been shown to have numerous benefits on mental and physical health. Studies have found it to be effective in reducing stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. It can also improve sleep quality, enhance focus, concentration and memory, and increase overall wellbeing. Tapping can be effective on its own or combined with other therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, energy healing, mindfulness, and hypnotherapy.

EFT Tapping in your Daily Life

Tapping is a really easy tool to integrate into your busy everyday life. Positive effects can be felt within a few minutes, so integrating it into tasks you are already doing is a great way to start using it. For example, while boiling the kettle you can tap on the main points on the body focusing on the statement ‘I am safe’ or ‘I am loved’. Often, we are in the Fight, Flight, Freeze response because of a lack of safety in some aspect, so focusing on safety can release negative energy very quickly.

Tapping in the shower in the morning, or bathtub at night can also be very effective as you are incorporating it into daily tasks. If you have a sudden rise of a particular emotion during the day you can try and take yourself away for a few minutes to calm down, take some deep breaths and do some tapping. If you can’t take time in that moment, park the feelings as best you can and then before bed come back to them, tune in and focus on how you felt, why you felt like that and tell yourself to let it go, all while tapping on the key points.

EFT tapping is a powerful technique that can help us manage stress, anxiety, trauma, and negative emotions. It is a safe and effective approach that can be easily learned and applied in our daily lives. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, a healthcare professional, or simply someone looking for a natural and holistic way to improve your wellbeing, tapping can be a valuable tool in your toolkit. Understanding Your Midlife Hormones

Sarah Williamson is a nutritional therapist and co-founder of WomenWise, offering women a hyper-personalised approach to understanding their midlife health. Here she explains how our hormones affect us during this period of our lives and why it’s so important to understand what’s going on in our own bodies and that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

The question we are asked a lot is, ‘Is there a test to find out if I am perimenopausal or when I can expect my menopause?’ The short answer, unfortunately, is no!

After you have stopped having monthly cycles for more than a year you are regarded as post-menopausal. Your FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) level would be consistently high - a sign that you had been through menopause. However, during perimenopause FSH levels fluctuate a lot, even during your monthly cycle, and cannot predict your menopause status. Similarly, measuring oestrogen levels is not a useful predictor because they fluctuate even after you stop having periods.

If you could predict the exact day of your last cycle, the result cannot tell how you to avoid menopause symptoms.

So what is worth measuring?

At WomenWise we look at the menopause transition through a different lens. We begin with the idea that nature hasn’t designed menopause to be a challenge. A ‘back up system’ exists to take over making low levels of oestrogen and progesterone as your ovaries retire. Some women sail through the menopause and having excellent underlying health is the key.

Adrenal Function

Your adrenal glands, which are two tiny pyramid shaped glands that sit on top of your kidneys, take on the role of making sex hormones. However, for many modern women, stress has a major impact on the adrenal glands’ ability to take up the baton.

We use a test that helps us understand how well your adrenal glands are functioning and the impact that stress and your metabolic health has on your health. In 8 out of 10 women we see this test shows imbalances and we use diet changes, stress management and some herbs to bring things back into balance.

Thyroid

Many women also experience changes in thyroid function. These changes seem to occur as we pass through the hormonal shifts of puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopause. We always test women to pick up the need for medical support or more subtle nutritional support such as key minerals like zinc and selenium. Low thyroid function is a real mimic of menopause with symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, and thinning hair.

Iron

Heavy bleeding is a common experience for lots of perimenopausal women and this, alongside new dietary paradigms such as the vegan or vegetarian diets, can mean women get very low in iron. Iron has many roles; a key one is carrying oxygen around the body in the blood stream. Oxygen is crucial for energy production and low iron can show up as fatigue, brain fog and thinning hair.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a powerful vitamin that behaves like a hormone: it influences our mood, sleep, sex drive, immune system, and bone health. We always check vitamin D levels because of its far-reaching impact.

Insulin

Many women complain of the combined symptoms of fatigue, carbohydrate cravings and weight gain that creeps up on them in their 40s. Again, another hormone – insulin - is important here. Insulin’s job is to allow fuel (glucose) to move from your blood stream into your cells where it is converted into energy, making you feel vital. Fluctuating oestrogen levels (and rising FSH) can cause insulin resistance; this means the fuel cannot

get into your cells to create energy and is often stored as fat. This leaves us hungrier, more tired and gaining weight. A great athome measure you can do is divide your height by your waist measurement. If your waist is growing, it can be a sign of insulin resistance, especially if you are feeling fatigued and hungry. If your waist is more than half your height this means you are at higher risk of diabetes.

Genetics

Finally we test some key genetics. This tells us about your genetic potential to process alcohol and caffeine as well as enzymes that can affect your mood, cravings and your ability to clear oestrogen safely from your body.

Tests are fantastic, but they are not enough on their own: your symptoms, medications and family history all shed important light on how we can help you pass through the menopause feeling your sparkling best.

The human body is made of seven different energy centres, known as chakras (Chakra (cakra in Sanskrit) means “wheel”). They are thought to be spinning disks of energy that should stay “open” and aligned, as they correspond to bundles of nerves, major organs, and areas of our energetic body that affect our emotional and physical wellbeing.

Each chakra corresponds to a particular sound frequency that, when stimulated, helps balance and unblock the flow of energy throughout the body. When these frequencies deviate from their natural state, for example during times of stress, it causes cellular changes, disrupting the body’s fluid energy flow. This disruption can lead to mental wellbeing issues, physical ailments, and even disease. Vedic sound healing aligns these chakras to support physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

Do Artificial Sweeteners Cause Cancer?

The claim that artificial sweeteners might be unhealthy is nothing new, but the last few months we’ve all seen the headline that the commonly used artificial sweetener aspartame causes cancer.

The sensationalised headline gained traction after IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), which is part of WHO (World Health Organisation), announced in July 2023 that aspartame will be classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”, listing it in category 2B. Somehow this was taken completely out of context and became “Aspartame causes cancer” which is quite removed from what the research actually found.

A 2B classification means that there is inadequate evidence of the item causing cancer in humans, but further research is needed. And I do realise that also sounds rather serious, but for comparison, some other things that are also in this 2B category are aloe vera, pickled vegetables and talcum powder! At one point, even coffee was on that list.

In my opinion, none of the foods on this list can cause cancer in isolation, and aren’t an issue when consumed in moderation as part of a nutritious, balanced diet and lifestyle. The aitiology of cancer is far more complicated than any one food. But of course, this common sense approach doesn’t grab headlines.

We also need to better understand the research that led to this 2B classification. Firstly it was an animal study, specifically using rodents. This matters when looking

at the validity of any research; it might seem an obvious statement to make but we are not rodents. Just because something happened in animals, it doesn’t automatically mean it will also happen in humans. Furthermore, the dosage given to the rodents in this study was enormous... amounts that humans would simply never consume. And the reality is that almost anything could become harmful if consumed in huge doses.

Another crucial dimension when considering how potentially harmful any substance may be, is quantity. Before anything makes it into the human food chain, there is a recommendation for the safe daily intake amount based on robust research. Since aspartame is the current darling of the headlines, let’s use it as an example – the acceptable daily intake (ADI) is 40mg per kilogram of body weight.

So for a person weighing 70kg – the amount of diet soft drinks they can safely consume in a day is around 20 x 330ml cans. 20 cans! It’s also worth mentioning that ADI recommendations have a built-in safety margin, meaning that the actual safe amount is much higher. For the record, I do not recommend anyone drink 20 cans of soft drink. Ever!

The fact is, to date, we do not have convincing evidence linking artificial sweeteners and the development of cancer in humans. Even if a link was discovered, I am confident in saying dose will be a significant factor and so will other lifestyle choices. More research is needed.

For now, I find it very reassuring that governing bodies and experts in the area are telling us it is safe.

Cancer Research UK explicitly state – “no, artificial sweeteners … won’t increase your risk of cancer”.

JECFA (Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives), the US FDA and the European Food Safety Authority have found aspartame and other artificial sweeteners to be perfectly safe.

I am not promoting artificial sweeteners, but I don’t want to demonise them either. While they are not nutritious, that doesn’t make them harmful and it doesn’t mean they can’t be useful, such as for weight management.

I also dislike misinformation that creates unnecessary anxiety around food. I consider it more useful to be well informed and make choices that are right for you. The reality is that even if we avoided everything on all the lists, there are no guarantees of avoiding serious illness. We can only do our best to look after ourselves knowing it’s increasing our chances of good health.

So what does all this mean for those who enjoy using artificially sweeteners? I believe you can continue to do so without worryin moderation of course. In an otherwise nutritious diet, the occasional can of diet drink won’t do any harm.

A client came to us with money to invest.

They had no experience of being a landlord or how to make their capital work for them, they just knew that they wanted to invest in a property.

The Proposition

Reka found a property suitable for HMO conversion, oversaw the planning permission, the HMO license, the change of use, the construction work, the marketing of the property and sourcing the tenants.

In 2020, Reka sourced a bed property in East London, which the client bought for £425,000.

This was converted into a bed en-suite property at a cost of £170,000

Despite working within the parameters of a lockdown, the property was converted to a six bedroom en-suite property with a communal kitchen, loft conversion and converted garage within six months.

During that time all licenses and applications were filed and approved.

Favourite holiday memory?

As a child the first family holiday we had was when I was 13 and we went to Greece. I had never been abroad and couldn’t believe the beauty of Greece - the heat, the food, the beach. I remember most of this holiday - it’s been tattooed on my brain. As a parent, we all went to Aruba and went to the beach where flamingos walk around. That was so surreal, seeing my kids playing with flamingos in the sea. Then it started to pour down with rain - a huge storm appeared from nowhere, no time to escape the beach with all the kids’ paraphernalia, so we stayed dry under a sun lounger umbrella and all snuggled together watching the rain hit the sea. It was so beautiful.

The next destination on your list is…?

Ooooh good question…not sure. So many places I want to experience with the kids. It’s my 10 year wedding anniversary next May so we’re thinking of going back to where we went on our honeymoon 10 years ago - a stunning hotel in Crete called Daios Cove.

What language would you love to learn?

Italian.

If you could choose one superpower?

I would clone myself so I could get so much more done!
