Keeping parents up to date
Love Parks, Love Play! Ferry Meadows Country Park is all set for the first installation of new play equipment this September.
A
s part of the preparation work, school pupils from St Botolphs Church of England Primary School, Nene Park volunteers, members of the Nene Park Access Forum and Nene Park Trust staff have engaged in a series of workshops designing the future of play in Ferry Meadows. Touch Wood Enterprises Limited, along with Davies White Landscape Architects, have been commissioned to design and build exciting play experiences in Ferry Meadows over the coming over three years. During early July, ‘pop-up’ play has been installed close to the Visitor Centre. This temporary play installation includes a water cascade, a hollow log to clamber through, a human sundial as well as cluster seating made from boulders and logs- all of which will later feature in new permanent play areas in the park. Teresa Wood, Visitor Services Manager for Nene Park Trust, said “This pop-up play area is designed to generate interest in the three year play project. In September, installation will commence on the first of the play areas closest to the Visitor Centre and Ferry Meadows Café. The play equipment is made from natural materials and will blend in to the Park environment. It will

include willow walk ways and cob walls as well as lots of areas and equipment on which to swing, scramble and slide.” Nicky Noble, Deputy Head Teacher at St Botolphs Church of England Primary School, said “St Botolphs is a regular user of Nene Park and, in particular, Ferry Meadows. In April, some of the pupils had a fantastic time at a play workshop building play equipment in the woods from ropes, nets, logs and other equipment. It is great that their ideas will form part of the future of Play in Ferry Meadows.” From swinging acorn pods to embankment slides and cradle swings, Ferry Meadows is set to be the best place to come and play. www.neneparktrust.org.uk

N
ew and growing families could own their very own Larkfleet property sooner, and for less than they think, thanks to the housebuilder’s independent and government backed financial incentive schemes. For first-time buyers, parents-to-be or growing families needing a little more room, Larkfleet has properties across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Oakham to suit a variety of domestic and financial circumstances. Energy efficiency is also high on Larkfleet’s agenda – it offers solar PV (photovoltaic) panels on several developments – meaning many of its properties are cheaper to run and produce fewer carbon emissions in use. All these benefits that come with buying a Larkfleet home mean families will save time, and importantly money, when they need it the most. Did you know that more people are injured in drink drive related incidents in the summer than during Christmas and New Year?
A
s a result, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership is supporting the new THINK! 2013 summer drink drive campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the consequences of a drink driving conviction. Clair George, Road Safety Officer for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership, said “This is the time of year that many people choose to throw an impromptu barbecue, plan social gatherings or are having their wedding day celebrations. It’s easy to forget the amount of alcohol consumed throughout an afternoon or evening and how much remains in the system the following day.” As well as supporting the national campaign, the partnership will also be distributing flyers to organisations which remind drivers of the facts around driving the morning after a summer social event.

DR MATT PICCAVER | GP
The Diphtheria-TetanusPertussis immunisation is one of the increasing number of immunisations we receive in the UK.
D
iphtheria is now a rare condition in the UK, so much so, that many doctors practising in the UK will never see it. There have only been a handful of cases over the past 20 years, and almost all in people returning from areas where it is much more common. Diphtheria causes an upper respiratory tract infection, something akin to a cold, caused by a toxin producing organism. It can cause a sore throat, and a membrane can grow across the top of the throat. Our lymph nodes enlarge, (people often call these “glands”), and swelling around the neck. Some people may carry the infection without knowing it. It takes anywhere up to five days to develop symptoms, and those who are not treated can continue to spread the infection for up to a month after. We catch it through droplets, so coughs, sneezes, snot and phlegm (glamourous job this!). The toxic chemical made by the Diphtheria bug can affect the nerves, heart and adrenal glands. This can cause death through heart failure and paralysis. People still die of diphtheria, particularly in the developing world, so we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of the vaccine programme. It’s a safe vaccine, with few side effects, but if you want to know more, ask your practice nurse.

Pelvic floor myth!
A
new book The Kegel Legacy written by Barry Fowler poses the question to all women: Has your sex life become less enjoyable since you had children? Have you suffered from embarrassing leaks after childbirth? Childbirth can cause a lifetime of health problems and many women feel that the NHS recommended Kegel or pelvic floor exercises just do not work. Millions of women struggling to cope with embarrassment and discomfort have been kept unaware of a simple, effective self-help treatment. The Kegel Legacy unveils the clinical research behind the daily exercises that you should practice to achieve improvement in days, not weeks and makes the case for a wholesale reassessment of pelvic floor rehabilitation and the better promotion of pelvic floor exercises as a self-help treatment. M
aking rings is incredibly easy and quick! It’s also pretty darn fun, not to mention cheap. So, I decided to delve into my craft box and show you a popular DIY of mine for my first craft post. Firstly, decide what centrepiece take your fancy. I found this gorgeous brooch on eBay and I just had to have it. Beatrix Potter was always a childhood favourite of mine so this unique Jemima Puddle-duck piece definitely had my name on. I also saw this teeny-tiny Coco Chanel perfume bottle sold as supplies for dolls house miniatures and I knew it would look just fabulous on my fingers. Then just grab some rings blanks, and a strong craft glue. All you have to do now is simply dab the glue onto the ring and hold the centrepiece into place until secure and leave to dry. Then that is it, you’re all done. You are now the owner, and creator, of two gorgeous rings within a matter of minutes. Cute and original. What do you think? This is such a quick project and they make great novelty gifts (if you can bear to part with them!) If you want to source some other fun miniatures yourselves try checking out dolls house supplies as there are so many options and they are the perfect dimensions for rings! You can literally make anything into a ring; brooches, buttons, coins, sweets, you name it. You see something you like, stick a ring on it, and show it off to the world. We all know the famous ‘saying’*, “If you like it, then you should have put a ring on it”. I hope you try them. Tweet me your pictures if you do, I’d love to see them! *Yes, a Beyoncé lyric is a saying. That girl speaks so much sense.

Best foot forward ALICE BRYAN | FASHIONBEAUTYANDSTYLE.WORDPRESS.COM
Y
our poor feet. They’ve supported you through the good times, walking around the endless stores while you get your fashion fix, the bad times, when you storm off in a bad mood stomping around the house, the hard times, as you attempt the 5k run around the local field, and the drunk times, when you’ve stupidly decided to cram your hooves into ridiculously high heels.
Summer feet tips: First and foremost: Hygiene.
Pretty simple, wash and soak your feet with a bristle brush in warm soapy water regularly (every day). This will soften the skin and combat the bacteria which causes foot odour. Make sure to dry them thoroughly, especially in-between your toes, and only put your feet inside shoes or socks when dry. You can use body powders or foot powders to keep the sweat away from the feet. With 250,000 sweat glands in your feet, it is no surprise that they sweat more than other parts of the body.
mumszone
to your heels whilst avoiding in-between the toes. Look for balms or heel creams containing salicylic acid, urea, petrolatum, an emollient, or a humectant such as lactic acid, which draws moisture into the skin and softens tough calluses.
Nails
Priority attention with all feet should be the toenails. If shabby and unkempt they are unsightly. Keep them trimmed regularly as overly long toenails are prone to getting caught on things and fungus can build up under the nail, infecting the nail itself. The leading cause of hangnails and ingrown toenails is clumsy nail trimming. Use toenail clippers to keep them short and file down rough edges. File nails into a shape that mirrors the curve of your nail base.
Decoration
Foot chains, anklets and toe rings are making a come-back in the fashion arena. Accessorize your trotters will some cool designs, from simple to flamboyant, there are loads of options to make you feet feel elegant and regal.
Smoothness
Hard skin forms due to overloading and pressure areas. If you have hard skin on your feet, gently remove it with a pumice stone, foot file or Ped Egg on damp heels and calluses and it will ensure that your feet look utterly gorgeous in your new sling-backs. Foot files gently remove the thickened skin and leave it feeling soft and smooth, while moisturising foot scrubs made from botanicals such as crushed fruit stones, sugar or chemical exfoliates also help remove dead skin.
Hydration
After you scrub, and only where your feet are completely dry, apply a rich moisturising foot cream or balm containing shea butter or cocoa butter all over your feet paying particular attention

Stop the sneeze!
S
ummer hopefully means long sunny days and clear blue skies, but for some it means the start of allergy season, sneezing and itchy eyes! For those that fall into the latter category there is some good news however in the form of new research that shows adding an unusual food supplement to your diet could dramatically help reduce allergy symptoms… Chlorella, the fresh water algae, acts as ‘an anti-allergic dietary agent by suppressing histamine release’. This means that hay fever suffers could reduce their reliance on antihistamine drugs by adding a chlorella supplement to their diets. There’s no need to go fishing in your local pond as leading natural health food experts Naturya sell a powdered chlorella supplement that can be added to smoothies, juice or even salads. Summer learning Phew… and relax the school run is over for another year! But as a parent it is important to keep your children’s brains active over the summer, so don’t put your feet up just yet!
T
WORDS KATIE AMPS
he school gates may have closed for the summer, but that’s no reason to allow your child’s mind to follow suit. As parents, some of us have a hard time connecting the words ‘summer’ and ‘learning’. But we’re not talking about chaining children to a desk and denying them the delights of their wellearned summer break. Summer learning should be distinctively different; more of a case of keeping the door ajar than flung wide open. With around 13 weeks of annual holiday each year, children can occasionally regress from their learning during breaks from school. This is particularly true after the six-week summer break and utilising this time to support and extend children’s learning is critical.

Kumon Educational, the UK’s largest supplementary education provider, advises parents to look ahead to the topics which children will be covering in the next school term and get children involved in a fun research project that will equip them with the appropriate background knowledge to succeed at school.
Educational Outings Planning a trip to a museum, art gallery or wildlife centre is an ideal choice. Organise your trip in advance and try to ensure that your objectives for the day are clear. Browse the venue’s website and download teacher notes which can include lesson plans and interactive worksheets that guide you around the venue. Involve children by asking them what they already know about the venue and what they would like to find out on their visit.
Record their Findings Schools will often start literacy topics with a visit and concoct a whole story around the venue to really engage children. For example, if you have made a visit to a castle then you could plant an exotic item while the children are not looking. They can then use this as an impetus for their story.
Holiday Clubs The local authority normally runs a full programme of holiday activities for children. For example, many libraries run summer reading challenges that ask children to read a certain amount of books in order to receive certificates or stickers.
Incorporate learning into your holiday If you have already planned a holiday, whether it’s at home or abroad, there are
still plenty of opportunities for learning. Each area/country has a rich history and children will enjoy investigating this. If children are learning languages at school, they can work on their skills by ordering their favourite food and drinks in restaurants. Remember, summer learning is simply about encouraging your child to keep mentally active by staying in touch with the habit of learning. Couple it with keeping physically active and all the other stuff your child loves to do, and they will not even know they are learning but will experience a world of difference on returning to school. Maths and English Tuition
25% off your first month! Keep up the good work over the summer, and get 25% off your first month when you join in July!
A
ward winning Explore Learning centres provide maths and English tuition to children aged 5-14, and are designed to improve knowledge, confidence and enjoyment of learning. Explore Learning helps children make fantastic academic progress, and the vibrant atmosphere keeps them engaged and focused, enabling them to have fun while they learn. The summer period is an ideal time to start Explore Learning membership as research has shown that two-thirds of children fall behind over the summer holidays. Coming to Explore just once or twice a week will help children retain the skills they have been working to master in school and prepare them for the new term ahead. Recent independent research from the University of Reading has shown that a child’s improvement in maths is 30% higher than that of a child who doesn’t attend over a 9-month period and children who are behind in their English before attending Explore Learning will achieve the national standard within 6 months. Each Explore Learning member has an individualised learning programme tailored to meet their needs and all of our programmes are mapped to the National Curriculum. The individual focus allows children to work at their own pace - whether they are finding school tricky or top of the class! To find out more about how Explore Learning can benefit your child and to book a free trial session, contact your local Peterborough centre on 01733 555355 or visit our website www.explorelearning.co.uk

Buckle up Most parents spend a great deal of time chauffeuring their children around, therefore the car becomes your second home. But how safe are your children in your car? John Lewis Peterborough is on hand to provide you with all the answers and advice to ensure you’re little cherubs are as ‘safe as houses’!
C
WORDS JOHN LEWIS PETERBOROUGH
hoosing the right car seat is vital for your child’s safety. By law, every car seat must conform to safety standards, but the sheer number of options available can be confusing. The law requires all children travelling in cars to use the correct child restraint until they are either 135 cm in height or the age of 12 (which ever they reach first). After this they must use an adult seat belt. For younger children it’s their weight and not his or her age that is the critical factor in deciding which car seat is suitable and safe. It’s recommended that a child continues to use a rear facing car seat until they are 4 years old. This is because a child’s body below this age is particularly vulnerable to forceful impacts, and a rear facing seat will provide the additional protection they need in the event of a collision. However tempting the price may be, road safety officers advise against buying secondhand child car seats, most only have a life span of about five years, and if they have ever been involved in an accident they might not offer full protection. Even if you want a bargain, you should buy new. And this is where John Lewis Peterborough can help. Their dedicated nursery advisors Rani Skerstins and Christine Hands, are on hand to assist customers with free, impartial advice, to ensure complete peace of mind. European regulations define eight groups of seat, each of which is suitable for a range of weights. All the child seats in the John Lewis range are designed to give your child the best possible protection. Some seats are designed to cover more than one group. All of the child seats are designed to meet the current safety standards. www.cherubsnet.com | cherubs 45

Rani says: “It is essential to ensure that the seat you choose is suitable for your car and that you never use the child seat on a passenger seat with an active airbag”. “When choosing a car seat, safety comes first, so remember that your baby’s weight, not age that is the critical factor. We can advise on which seat to buy and give you a fitting demonstration.” Correct fitting of all car seats and boosters is of paramount importance. Do’s and Don’ts Do... •
Use a child restraint appropriate to your child’s weight and development and until your child reaches 135cm in height or their 12th birthday (whichever is sooner)
•
Adjust the harness for every journey. It should fit snugly, allowing you to slide one finger between harness and child.
•
Practise using the car seat before putting your child in it for the first time.
•
Ensure everyone who will be fitting the seat is confident in doing so.
•
Check the seat regularly to ensure it is secure.
•
Discourage your child from playing with the buckles.
•
Check regularly for wear on the harness, buckles and seat shell.
•
Check that shoulder straps are slightly below the child’s shoulders in a group 0 or 0+ seat, and level with, or slightly above the shoulders for forward-facing seats. Once you reach the top slots of the straps, the child can use the seat until his or her eyeline is level with the top of the seat shell.
•
Use an additional rear-view mirror to keep an eye on your child, to avoid having to look around while driving.
Don’t... •
Don’t ever use a second-hand car seat, as there could be invisible damage to the structure.
•
Don’t use a cushion or similar support under a child instead of a booster seat, as it will not give the same level of protection in an accident.
•
Don’t leave metal fittings exposed on a sunny day - they can get very hot. Keep a blanket in the car to cover the seat when not in use.
•
Never leave your child alone in the car, not even for a moment.
•
Never cover or modify buckles to prevent your child from playing with them, as this may seriously affect the quick release mechanism in an accident. www.cherubsnet.com | cherubs 47

hen I was a lad the summer holidays were all about exploration and adventure. We would pull on our backpacks and head out early catching tadpoles, flying kites, building dens and climbing trees. Of course my memories are of long warm summer days, which seem few and far between at the moment, but bad weather doesn’t deter children from being outdoors. The problem is that as parents we are shrouded by the fear that if we let our children out of our sight something bad will happen, but I guess as they get a little older we realise that the inevitable will occur, will we have to set them free. I have the same worries as all parents;
We all seem to have vivid memories of our own summer holidays when we were young, but how do we as parents in this new digital age ensure our children have the same adventures. do we trust our children to be responsible when they are alone, and secondly do we trust other people near our children, not just adults but other kids. But ultimately if we offer them no sense of responsibility then how will they ever learn to go it alone? I read an interview recently with Richard Branson’s mother Eve who took drastic measures to make Richard stand on his own two feet. She explains how Richard was a shy child who would not interact with other adults or children, so one day on the way home from a shopping trip, she stopped the car about three miles from home and told him to find his own way back to the house, telling him “you will have to speak to people to find your way home.” Now, this would not be the way I would parent my children, but I can understand her logic. According to Branson’s story from his autobiography, Losing My Virginity, it took him around 10 hours to arrive home and after the experience his shyness improved. So this summer, as well as all of the preplanned days out and holidays I will offer them some of the responsibility that they so desperately crave and let them ‘play out.’ Our children come alive in the outdoors in a way they just don’t when playing computer games. We owe it to them to do all we can to give them the experiences we treasured so much. The other promise I have made to myself this summer is to experience a festival. I am not a big fan of camping, when I am on holiday I like the luxury of a nice comfy bed, but as they say, ‘you only live once,’ and I feel it’s time to pull on my wellies and see what all the fuss is about. If you are looking for a family friendly festival then there are loads of options available. Cherubs has teamed up with Camp Bestival to offer a family ticket to their festi-holiday jamboree this summer. See page 42.
Win a Family ticket to Camp Bestival with Cherubs! Camp Bestival is a multi-award winning four-day festival taking place from August 1st-4th at Lulworth Castle, Dorset. It’s the ultimate family festival, with something for everyone, including this year’s all-encompassing Around The World theme, musical treats like Labrinth, Richard Hawley, Billy Bragg and Ash. There’s plenty of disco action to be had too with Kid Creole & the Coconuts’ high octane live show and The Cuban Brothers rolling out the good times from across the decades, so you’re guaranteed to be dancing round your handbags long into the night. For the kids there is the Horrible Histories show, comedy headliner Alan Davies, kids’ discos every day in Bollywood, kids faves Mr Tumble and Dick N Dom and so much more to keep everyone smiling all weekend long. For more information and to book tickets go to www.campbestival.net or call 0844 888 4410.
